【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan【電子書籍】[ Nicholas McLeod ]

"McLeod gives a list of the emperors of Japan...the first of them is Osee...the same name as that of the last King of Israel." -The American Israelite, May 18, 1905
"McLeod in his book 'Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan'...points out the agreement between the first known king of Japan, Osee, 730 B.C. and the last king of Israel who was Hosea, who died in 722 B.C." -Buffalo Times, Feb. 3, 1924
"Contains proofs of the Japanese descent from Osee, the last king of Israel." -A Bibliography of the Japanese Empire (1895)
"The descendants of a Negro race may also be seen in different parts of the country." -Nicholas McLeod
"Spent decades in Japan, wrote Japanese history as a history of the ten tribes in the Japanese isles." -The Ten Lost Tribes: A World History (2009)
"McLeod self-published several books theorizing the Japanese people were actually Israelites." -Early Mormon Missionary Activities in Japan (2010)
"Speculated that Japanese people themselves may be direct descendants of part of the Ten Lost Tribes." -Jesus: From India to Japan (2017)
"One group was what he called the Japanese Jewish people, even mentioned a black race, similar to those in Africa." -Rediscovering Japan (2010)
"A good summary of evidence for Jewish origins found by that author, still mentioned by proponents today." -The Sacred Science of Ancient Japan (2014)

Can evidence of the Lost Tribes of Israel be found in Japan? Yes, the holy class of Japan is descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel; the first known king of Japan was called Osee and came to the throne in 730 B.C., identifying him with Hoshea, the last king of Israel, who died in 722 B.C. Or so claims Nicholas McLeod in his 1878 book "Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan."

A Scot who started his career in the herring industry before he ended up in Japan as a missionary, Nicholas McLeod (1868?1889) was a native of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, who was known for his theory that the Japanese people descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel. McLeod also provides evidence that "descendants of a Negro race" could be found in remote regions of Japan.

McLeod's 1878 book contain extensive comparisons of the religious rituals of Judaism and Shintoism as evidence of the links between ancient Israel and Japan.

According to Zvi Ben-Dor Benite, MacLeod had been a missionary who spent decades in Japan and Korea "searching for the true Israelites". The following passage is an example from the book in which McLeod draws correlations between his observations on Japan and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy:

"The civilized race of the Aa. Inus, the Tokugawa and the Machi No Hito of the large towns, by dwelling in the tent or tabernacle shaped houses first erected by Jin Mu Tenno, have fulfilled Noah's prophecy regarding Japhet, 'He shall dwell in the tents of Shem.'"

Regarding dark-skinned Japanese, McLeod writes:

"In my travels I came across the remnants of a Black Race, nearly all of them had the woolly head and features of the Negro... Negro faces are to be seen scattered up and down the Empire; they have the complexion of a Mulatto. ...The Japanese called them Black Devils."

McLeod's remarkable book is still cited to the present day by proponents of the Japanese Jewish ancestry theory.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Swann's Way Exploring Time, Memory, and Love: A Deep Dive into Proustian Themes【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

In "Swann's Way," the first volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work "In Search of Lost Time," the author masterfully weaves a narrative rich in introspection and memory, establishing a new paradigm in literary style. Through the use of stream-of-consciousness and intricate character sketches, Proust explores themes of love, art, and time, employing vivid imagery and detailed observations that evoke a profound sense of nostalgia. The novel's fragmented structure and temporal shifts invite readers to ponder the complexities of human experience, culminating in a meditation on the nature of remembrance itself. Marcel Proust, a French novelist and essayist, was deeply influenced by his own experiences of love and societal observation, often drawing from his affluent upbringing in Paris. His intimate understanding of the nuances of social interactions and the psychological depth of human emotions lends authenticity to the characters in "Swann's Way." Proust's delicate exploration of passion, particularly through the lens of Charles Swann's yearning for Odette, reflects not only personal struggles but also broader philosophical inquiries into desire and identity. This seminal work is essential for any reader seeking to comprehend the intricacies of human consciousness and the passage of time. Proust's evocative prose beckons readers to reflect deeply on their own memories and experiences. "Swann's Way" stands as a timeless exploration of art and love, inviting an engagement with both its narrative and philosophical depths.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Simplicius: On Aristotle Physics 1?8 General Introduction to the 12 Volumes of Translations【電子書籍】

Supporting the twelve volumes of translation of Simplicius' great commentary on Aristotle's Physics, all published by Bloomsbury in the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series, between 1992 and 2021, this volume presents a general introduction to the commentary. It covers the philosophical aims of Simplicius' commentaries on the Physics and the related text On the Heaven; Simplicius' methods and his use of earlier sources; and key themes and comparison with Philoponus' commentary on the same text.

Simplicius treats the Physics as a universal study of the principles of all natural things underlying the account of the cosmos in On the Heaven. In both treatises, he responds at every stage to the now lost Peripatetic commentaries of Alexander of Aphrodisias, which set Aristotle in opposition to Plato and to earlier thinkers such as Parmenides, Empedocles and Anaxagoras. On each passage, Simplicius after going through Alexander's commentary raises difficulties for the text of Aristotle as interpreted by Alexander. Then, after making observations about details of the text, and often going back to a direct reading of the older philosophers (for whom he is now often our main source, as he is for Alexander's commentary), he proposes his own solution to the difficulties, introduced with a modest 'perhaps', which reads Aristotle as in harmony with Plato and earlier thinkers.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mary Norton of New Jersey Congressional Trailblazer【電子書籍】[ David L. Porter ]

Mary Norton of New Jersey: Congressional Trailblazer tells the compelling story of Mary Norton, who served in the United States House of Representatives for 13 terms from 1925 to 1951, featuring her significant role as a congressional pioneer for women and American workers. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Norton grew up in a Roman Catholic, working-class family and was prodded to enter politics by Jersey City mayor Frank Hague. One of the first five women elected to the United States Congress, she cut a fresh path for women of ordinary means as the first female elected to the House from the Democratic Party, an eastern state, or urban center east of the Mississippi River.

Norton’s political career paralleled mayor Hague’s tight control of Jersey City and president Franklin Roosevelt’s national leadership during the Depression and World War II. Norton’s connection with Hague’s Jersey City Democratic Party political machine clouded her career, but Hague seldom tried to influence her legislative behavior.

Norton, the first woman to chair four House committees including a major committee, consistently supported legislation helping economically disadvantaged Americans and encouraged women to enter politics. At the helm of the District of Columbia Committee from 1931 to 1937, she served as unofficial mayor of Washington, D.C. and helped enact long-needed political, economic, and social legislation for its citizens. Her most valuable work came as head of the powerful Labor Committee from 1937 to 1947. Norton helped secure House passage of the landmark Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, establishing a national minimum hourly wage and maximum workweek. She sought to improve working conditions for America’s newly industrialized workers and defended the Wagner Act of 1935, allowing employees to bargain collectively for the value of their work.

Norton also helped secure federal funding for several Hudson County projects benefitting her Irish, Roman Catholic, working-class constituents. The expansion of mayor Hague’s gargantuan Medical Center Complex and the construction of Roosevelt Stadium provided numerous jobs for unemployed Hudson County residents. Norton, who never lost an election and was reelected by decisive margins, was the first woman elected as a freeholder in New Jersey and to direct a state Democratic Party.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

If he's not careful, one of his loved ones will die.

Life is not easy, even when you're a ghost.

Using technology developed at the University of Arizona, JJ communicates from beyond the veil to tell his mind-bending story of life beyond death in his own words.

"...JJ's heartrending passage, kicking and screaming, through Elisabeth K?bler-Ross' five stages of grief for his lost life, is relatable for any reader who has lost a loved one too soon. The wry humor and raw emotional truth of JJ's journey will have readers rooting for him from death to eternity." 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Swann's Way Journey into the Depths of Memory and Identity【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

In 'Swann's Way', the inaugural volume of Proust's monumental seven-part series 'In Search of Lost Time', the narrative unfolds through a rich tapestry of memory, time, and desire. Proust employs a stream-of-consciousness style that intricately depicts the protagonist's introspections and associations, blending tender recollections with philosophical musings. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century French society, the novel explores themes of love, art, and social ambition, primarily through the lens of Charles Swann's unrequited love for Odette de Cr√?cy, establishing a profound exploration of the complexities of human emotion and perception. Marcel Proust, a key figure in early 20th-century literature, was deeply influenced by his own life experiences, particularly his reflections on memory and the passage of time. His upbringing in bourgeois Parisian society and struggles with illness informed his exploration of existential questions in his writing. 'Swann's Way' draws from his personal encounters and relationships, serving as a polished gem that illuminates the intricacies of both intimate and societal connections. Readers seeking a profound, introspective journey into the labyrinth of memory and identity will find 'Swann's Way' an indispensable exploration. This novel invites readers to reflective engagement, making it not just a story but an experience that resonates on both intellectual and emotional levels.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Witch of Sulphur Mountain: The Supernatural Life of Agnes Baron, Meher Baba's Beloved Watchdog【電子書籍】[ David Madison ]

"Baba, if you want Meher Mount I’ll keep it for you through hellfire and damnation!"

With these words fiery Agnes Baron commences the remaining 46 years of her hard-scrabble life devoted to Indian mystic Meher Baba who claims to be the Avatar (God in human form). She will get plenty of both. Two years prior in 1946, at Meher Baba’s behest, she, Jean Adriel, and other Baba-lovers found and established Meher Mount, an idyllic 172-acre retreat atop Sulphur Mountain in Ojai, CA. By the time she made her vow, Jean and the others had departed, leaving Meher Mount in her hands. But how will she keep “Baba’s Place” out of the hands of covetous schemers? She doesn’t own it. Jean does. And if Jean wants to sell it, there’s nothing she can do. Or is there? It brings out the witch in her. For this Meher Baba nicknames Agnes "Agni," Sanskrit word for fire, and dubs her his “Beloved Watchdog.” For 10 years she worries herself more than any dog its bone that it will be sold from under Baba’s feet. Shortly before his only visit to Meher Mount, on August 2, 1956, Agni gets Meher Mount in her name. But her worries aren’t over. A single woman without means, she finds work as a substitute teacher, and sells strawberries she grows, and lives with the haunting fear she won’t be able to make the mortgage payments, and the bank will seize it. Some who covet the property try to make her a ward of the state.

Agnes Baron’s remarkable life is written in the form of an idyll, a narrative poem in heroic verse. And heroic aptly describes her 87-year odyssey. Shortly after graduating in 1928 with a sociology degree from Antioch College, known for turning out revolutionaries, Agnes departs for war-torn Europe, on fire to help “My Friends Abroad.” Working as a freelance journalist, she chronicles the plight of the Jews fleeing anti-Semitism, and goes to Lisbon where she “bullies” bureaucrats for passports, and shipping companies and captains for passage. She travels the Balkan states, chronicling the plight of the underdogs: the poor, sick, oppressed, and downtrodden. In Spain she graphically depicts the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War, the bombings by German and Italian planes of Guernica and Barcelona. Throughout Europe she raises the alarm of the growing Nazi menace, and with the outbreak of WWII, the mounting horrors of the holocaust. After 13 years, sickened with man’s inhumanity to man, Agnes abandons her faith in God and returns to San Francisco, lost. “I hated humanity. I just wanted everybody to die. Blow them to hell. I just hated everybody. I was so in the deeps of despair that I gave myself arthritis of the spine. Then I stumbled on this lovely Quaker lady, and I went to one of her meetings. She went to Vedanta. I thought, Well if she goes to Vedanta it must be respectable. So I went up the hill and walked into the Vedanta Temple, and for the first time I had a ray of hope. There must be some hope for humanity. . . .”

She embraces Vedanta, and asks the swami of the Vedanta Temple if he will accept her as a nun. “I don’t take women,” he tells her, “but my brother swami in Hollywood does.” She goes there, he accepts her, and she lives the life of a Vedanta nun for two years, but still she does not find peace. Then she realizes why. She has to let God back into her heart. She does. But then she catches the swami in an indiscretion, and leaves him in disgust, telling him, “You're a fallen guru.”

She goes to a nearby Vedanta temple, Ananda Ashrama, is accepted, but then is told her typing late at night is keeping others awake. The swami tells her of another place two miles up the road, the New Life Center, devoted to an Indian guru. She wants nothing more to do with gurus, but she needs a place where she can write in peace. She goes there, rents a little place on a hill, and tells the owner, Jean Adriel, “Look, I don’t want anything to do with your damned [this under her breath] guru.” His name is Meher Baba.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

He ranks today as among the half-dozen greatest soldiers that America has produced. Military academies in both hemispheres still teach his tactics. Revered by his men, respected by his foes, Jackson became seemingly invincible. When he learned of the general's fatal wound, Robert E. Lee sent his "affectionate regards, " saying, "He has lost his left arm but I my right arm." Jackson's early death in 1863 was the greatest personal loss suffered by the Confederacy and one that permanently crippled the wartime South. This eagerly awaited biography is based on years of research into little-known manuscripts, unpublished letters, newspapers, and other primary sources. It offers for the first time a complete portrait - not only of Jackson the brilliant military strategist and beloved general but also of Jackson, the man of orphaned background, unyielding determination to conquer adversity, and deep religious convictions.

One woman's epic journey to trace the global slave trade across the Atlantic Ocean in this searing memoir for fans of Cheryl Strayed's Wildand Jesmyn Ward's Men We Reaped. An adventurous blend of personal and cultural history from a star National Geographic explorer and "a pioneer and an inspiration."ーElizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, LoveWhen Tara Roberts first caught sight of a photograph at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History depicting the underwater archaeology group Diving With a Purpose, it called out to her. Here were Black women and men strapping on masks, fins, and tanks to explore Atlantic Ocean waters along the coastlines of Africa, North America, and Central America, seeking the wrecks of slave ships long lost in time. Inspired, Roberts joined themーand started on a path of discovery more challenging and personal than she could ever have imagined. In this lush and lyrical memoir, she tells a story of exploration and reckoning that takes her from her home in Washington, D.C., to an exotic array of locales: Thailand and Sri Lanka, Mozambique, South Africa, Senegal, Benin, Costa Rica, and St. Croix. The journey connects her with other divers, scholars, and archaeologists, offering a unique way of understanding the 12.5 million souls carried away from their African homeland to enslavement on other continents. But for Roberts, the journey is also intensely personal. Inspired by the descendants of those who lost their lives during the Middle Passage, she decides to plumb her own family history and life as a Black woman to help make sense of her own identity.Complex and unflinchingly authentic, this deeply moving narrative heralds an important new voice in literature that will open minds and hearts everywhere.

"The people finding all their endeavours for this purpose thus totally frustrated, dissolved the meeting, which had consisted by common estimation of at least seven thousand men, many of whom had come from towns at the distance of twenty miles. In less than four hours every chest of tea on board three ships which had by this time arrived, three hundred and forty-two chests, or rather the contents of them, was thrown into the sea, without the least injury to the vessels or any other property.” ? Samuel Adams

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

In the years before the American Revolution, the disputes between the colonies and Great Britain produced no shortage of legendary events, all of which can be recited by schoolchildren from an early age, but none has been mythologized or misunderstood quite like the Boston Tea Party, colonial Boston’s most unique act of (relative) non-violent protest. The formation of a group of Americans calling themselves the “Tea Party” in 2009, more than 235 years after the Boston Tea Party, is testament to the enduring legacy of that iconic moment in American history.

On the night of December 16, 1773, a group of 30-130 men boarded the tea ship Dartmouth and two other ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor over the span of 3 hours in protest of the Tea Act of 1773. Agreement over what exactly happened ends there, but a number of legends have since popped up and become part of the common narrative. The urban legend that the people who boarded the ship dressed as Mohawks is not entirely true. The Tea Partiers were not protesting higher taxes on tea. The Tea Party was not coordinated by Samuel Adams. And nobody in Boston called it the “Tea Party” until nearly a century after it took place.

However, the impact of the Tea Party is beyond dispute. The bold protest and destruction of the tea induced the British to pass the Coercive or Intolerable Acts, including the closing of Boston Harbor. That spurred the colonies to send delegates to the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia to craft a united response to the Coercive or Intolerable Acts and petition King George III for redress. The First Continental Congress also vowed to reconvene in the summer of 1775. By the time the Second Continental Congress met, the Revolution was underway.

American Legends: The Boston Tea Party chronicles the history that led up to the passage of the Tea Act of 1773, the events of December 16, 1773, and the legends and myths surrounding the Boston Tea Party. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Tea Party like you never have before, in no time at all.

Tales of War by Lord Dunsany provides an evocative portrayal of World War I, offering a nuanced view of the conflict from multiple perspectives. Published in the early 20th century, this collection captures the raw and visceral experiences of the war, focusing on both British and German soldiers, as well as their families.

Lord Dunsany's writing delves into the trenches of the Great War, portraying not just the brutality of battle but also the personal stories of those caught in its midst. Through a series of vivid and compelling narratives, readers gain insight into the lives of soldiers, their comrades, and their loved ones.

“The bullets were snapping over thick to keep them down while the Boche went on, on the right: machine guns, of course. The barrage was screaming well over and dropping far back, and their wire was still all right just in front of them, when they put up a head to look. There was the left platoon of the battalion. One doesn’t bother, somehow, so much about another battalion as one’s own. One’s own gets sort of homely. And there they were wondering how their own officer was getting on, and the few fellows with them, on his defensive flank. The bombs were going off thick. All the Daleswood men were firing half right. It sounded from the noise as if it couldn’t last long, as if it would soon be decisive, and the battle be won, or lost, just there on the right, and perhaps the war ended. They didn’t notice the left. Nothing to speak of.”

This passage exemplifies Dunsany’s ability to convey the intensity and immediacy of the wartime experience, making “Tales of War” a poignant and impactful read. The stories within this book are not just historical accounts but deeply personal reflections on the impact of war on human lives.

Discover the depth and humanity behind the headlines with Tales of War by Lord Dunsany.
