The Impostor: A Tale of Old Annapolis【電子書籍】[ John Reed Scott ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Impostor: A Tale of Old Annapolis【電子書籍】[ John Reed Scott ]

Martha Stirling came slowly down the steps into the garden, pausing for a moment, on each step, lest the Governor hear her; then she sped quickly across the lawn, and, bending over, kissed him on the cheek. "Good morning, your Excellency!" she laughed. Colonel Sharpe looked up, with a start. "Bless me, girl! have some regard for your uncle's dignity," he said, drawing her down on the arm of the chair. "It seems to me, young lady, that you are a trifle clever in the kissing art, to never have been kissed yourself." "For shame, sir! You, a royal Governorーno, I mean a Lord Baltimore's Governorーto intimate so scandalous a thing. It may be, sir, that, as to you, I could truthfully not intimate.... Tell me, who is the young man that came with Mr. Dulany." "Ho, ho! That is the reason for the kiss: to make me amenable. Why did you not say, 'the handsome young man'?" "The handsome young man, then; indeed, the very handsome young man." "He is a stranger in Annapolis." "I know that." "And what else?" "What my eyes sawーgraceful, easy, handsome, a man of the world." "Oh, you women! Graceful, easy, handsome, a man of the world! You judge by externals." "And pray, sir, what else had I to judge by?" springing up; "I but saw himーyou spoke with him. How far am I amiss?" The Governor smiled. "Not by the fraction of a hair, so far as I can make it," he said. "He is Sir Edward Parkington, come from London for his pleasure. He brought with him letters of introduction to Mr. Dulany and myself. He seems to have been in a rather hard case, too. He took passage from The Capes to Annapolis in The Sally, a bark of small tonnage and worse sail. They ran into a storm; the bark foundered, and all on board were lost, except Parkington; or, at least, he saw none when, more dead than alive, he was cast ashore near Saint Mary's." "The poor fellow! Did he lose everything?" "Everything but the letters, which were in his pocketーand his charm of manner and good looks." At least, we shall appreciate the latter." The Governor looked at her rather quizzically. "Yes, I reckon you will," he said. "At least, if you do not, it will be the first time." His eyes fell on one, in the red and blue of the Royal Americans, who just emerged from the house, and was hesitating on the piazza, as though uncertain whether to descend. "It seems to me there is something familiar in that personage. Do you know him?" Martha turned and looked. "Oh!" she said, "I do not want to see him. Why does he pester me?" "Nevertheless, my dear, he is there; and I see he is coming here. So take him off and make game of him, playing him this way and that; a bit of encouragement, a vast disdain; and, then, send him off again a little more securely hooked than ever.... Good morning, Captain Herford, were you looking for us, or, rather, were you looking for one of us?" Charles Herford bowed, elaborately, his hand upon his sword-hilt, his hat across his heart. "If your Excellency please, I was," he said. "Which one: Mistress Martha Stirling or Horatio Sharpe?" asked the Governor, arising. "Mistress Stirling, so please you," said Herford, with another bow. "Then, I bid you good morning!" the Colonel laughed, and returned to the house. "Well, sir," said Miss Stirling, after a moment's silence, "what can I do for youーor, rather, what can I do with you?" "Treat me just faintly nice." "Oh," she said, looking at him through half-closed eyes, "is that it; humble, this morning!" "Yes, humble, grovelling, anything to win your favor." She turned, and they passed slowly among the flowers. "Is humbleness the way to win a woman's favor?" she asked. "I do not know. It seems to me the proper wayーor, if not proper, the more expedient way. Perchance, you will tell me."

Free Thinker Sex, Suffrage, and the Extraordinary Life of Helen Hamilton Gardener【電子書籍】[ Kimberly A. Hamlin ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Free Thinker Sex, Suffrage, and the Extraordinary Life of Helen Hamilton Gardener【電子書籍】[ Kimberly A. Hamlin ]

A story of transgression in the face of religious ideology, a sexist scientific establishment, and political resistance to securing women’s right to vote.

When Ohio newspapers published the story of Alice Chenoweth’s affair with a married man, she changed her name to Helen Hamilton Gardener, moved to New York, and devoted her life to championing women’s rights and decrying the sexual double standard. She published seven books and countless essays, hobnobbed with the most interesting thinkers of her era, and was celebrated for her audacious ideas and keen wit. Opposed to piety, temperance, and conventional thinking, Gardener eventually settled in Washington, D.C., where her tireless work proved, according to her colleague Maud Wood Park, "the most potent factor" in the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.

Free Thinker is the first biography of Helen Hamilton Gardener, who died as the highest-ranking woman in federal government and a national symbol of female citizenship. Hamlin exposes the racism that underpinned the women’s suffrage movement and the contradictions of Gardener’s politics. Her life sheds new light on why it was not until the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that the Nineteenth Amendment became a reality for all women.

Celebrated in her own time but lost to history in ours, Gardener was hailed as the "Harriet Beecher Stowe of Fallen Women." Free Thinker is the story of a woman whose struggles, both personal and political, resound in today’s fight for gender and sexual equity.

Moonshot Aim High, Dive Deep Live an Extraordinary Life【電子書籍】[ Amy Elizabeth Gordon MA ]

Amy’s transformational memoir explores the journey from despair to repair and serves an invitation to us all to understand the distinctions of an extraordinary life through the lens of resilience, compassion, and service. What was it like living in a culture devoid of rites of passage other than binge and puke and spread your legs? Naturally, my heart hurt, my soul ached, and my spirit floated lost. From this place of intensity, I developed incredible resilience. This is what happened: settling into sobriety, grounding into gratitude, and cultivating a compassionate heart, my mind cleared, my heart opened, my spirit reactivated, and my energy expanded. This is what it’s like now: breathing aloha into every moment, recognizing our interdependence, and claiming responsibility as a source for transformation, naturally, my grateful heart has more blessings than I can say grace over. “Equal parts lyrical, confessional, and practical, Amy Elizabeth vulnerably uses her own journey through addiction and trauma to inspire readers to move beyond limiting beliefs and heal from the past” (Alicia Munoz, author of No More Fighting: 20 Minutes a Week to a Stronger Relationship) “Moonshot is an elegant and visceral memoir that dares one to question one’s own resilience and courage. Indeed, Amy Elizabeth is as transparent as she appears in these pages. Love the interactive curriculum and its usefulness” (Kekuhi Keali’ikanaka’oleohaililani, trainer, Halau ‘Ohi’a). “This work is the bridge between despair and repair. It is an invitation for women to tenderize our own hearts and to craft a new heart-centric story, the true story of who we are at our core” (Kristen Noel, editor-in-chief, Best Self Magazine). “Nature did not design us to be alone. Evidence shows that people who enjoy close, fulfilling relationships with others are happier, healthier, and more creative. If this does not prompt you to the wonderful Moonshot, please reconsider. Highly recommended!” (Larry Dossey, MD, author of One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters). “What an enchanting, captivating, beautiful, practical book! Based in personal experience and penetrating prose, Moonshot is meant for anyone who needs more love, empathy, and compassion in their lifeーand who doesn’t? Let Amy be your guide to a richer, deeper commitmentーnot just to others but to the world” (Barbara Montgomery Dossey, RN, PhD, FAAN, author of Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer and Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice).

In the Foreign Legion【電子書籍】[ Erwin Rosen ]

Once upon a time there was a young student at a German University who found life too fresh, too joyous, to care very much for professors and college halls. Parental objections he disregarded. Things came to a climax. And the very next "Schnelldampfer" had amongst its passengers a boy in disgrace, bound for the country of unlimited possibilities in search of a fortune…. The boy did not see very much of fortune, but met with a great deal of hard work. His father did not consider New York a suitable place for bad boys, and booked him a through passage to Galveston. There the ex-student contracted hotel-bills, feeling very much out of place, until a man who took a fancy to him gave him a job on a farm in Texas. There the boy learnt a good deal about riding and shooting, but rather less about cotton-raising. This was the beginning. In the course of time he became translator of Associated Press Despatches for a big German paper in St. Louis and started in newspaper life. From vast New York to the Golden Gate his new profession carried him: he was sent as a war correspondent to Cuba, he learned wisdom from the kings of journalism, he paid flying visits to small Central American republics whenever a new little revolution was in sight. Incidentally he acquired a taste for adventure. Then the boy, a man now, was called back to the Fatherland, to be a journalist, editor and novelist. He was fairly successful. And a woman's love came into his life….But he lost the jewel happiness. The continual fight for existence and battling for daily bread of his American career, so full of ups and downs, was hardly a good preparation for quiet respectability. Wise men called him a fool, a fool unspeakable, who squandered his talents in light-heartedness. And finally a time came when even his wife to be could no more believe in him. The jewel happiness was lost….The man at any rate recognised his loss; he recognised that life was no longer worth living. A dull feeling of hopelessness came over him. And in his hour of despair he remembered the blood of adventure in his veins. A wild life he would have: he would forget. He enlisted as a soldier in the French Foreign Legion.

One of the "big four" of Teutonic thrash metal along with Destruction, Sodom and Tankard, Essen's Kreator helped pioneer death metal and black metal as we know it but are best known and beloved for their classic thrash metal style. They were one of the first group's to sign to a major label and have gone on to sell over two million albums to date making them one of the best-selling German thrash metal bands of all time. Noise Records continues their Kreator reissue campaign with a new remastered and expanded colored double vinyl pressing of the group's seventh album, Cause For Conflict, originally released in 1995. While not entirely abandoning the experimental nuances which had been so crucial to it predecessor, there was somewhat of a return to familiar territory here. "Lost" and "Isolation" were released as singles and the passage of time has seen Cause for Conflict come to be regarded as one of Kreator's underrated hidden gems.

The beautiful young Corena Melville is horrified when a sinister Greek man with the name of Mr. Thespidos calls on her at her home to announce that he is holding as his prisoner her beloved father, Sir Priam, a prominent archaeologist and an expert on Ancient Greek antiquities. Without Corena to help him, Sir Priam is presently in Greece excavating around the Temple of Athena where he is confident of finding a long lost statue of the Goddess Aphrodite, which is obviously coveted by Mr. Thespidos, who will sell it to the highest bidder on world markets. What is worse is that the only way that she can save him from torture and death is by travelling to Greece with the wealthy Lord Warburton, an avid collector of Greek treasures, from whom they aim to extract the whereabouts of other ancient statues they want to steal and then sell. In effect she is to be the bait in the wicked trap set for Lord Warburton. When Lord Warburton refuses her request for passage to Greece on his yacht to go to her father, the kidnapper smuggles her secretly on board. She is discovered and, initially angry, his Lordship is soon utterly bewitched by her and sees as the Aphrodite he has sought all his life. For what the evil kidnapper does not reckon with are Corena’s knowledge, beauty and intelligence and indeed the all-conquering power of love!

On a strange night of falling stars, Aria is called to learn who she is and why. Coerced by a grandmother to leave her desert home in California, Aria embarks on an adventure of discovery.

Guided and transported by the most colorful of curiosities, back (and back) in time she travels, and along the way, comes face to face with those who forged her family.

She goes to the Beginning of Thingsーnot the Beginning of Time, but the Beginning of Things, as they exist in Aria’s world. Her beliefs and assumptions are crushed beneath her wandering pilgrim feet as she leaves the modern era behind in search of something she didn’t even know she needed.

Escorted and cajoled by kings, outlaws, druids, and damsels, Aria is made aware of truths long hidden. Lost in a land of myth, she is made fully dependent on a long line of grandparents, both kind and diabolical, who ensure her safe passage back to California after sojourns in France, Scotland, England, and Ireland, where the Beginning of Things takes place. People who share Aria’s rare Rh-negative blood populate these ancient lands. These are people who the Watchers watch.

“The Silver Branch is an imaginative ride through history written with engaging wit. Aria is an enchanting character that takes us on an exciting journey through many different modes of travel to a magical, satisfying end, which is really the beginning.”

ーCarla Harrower

Landscape Contractor

“In the Silver Branch, Aria is called to learn who she is...and why. And on a strange night of falling stars, her journey begins. Guided and transported by the most colorful of curiosities, back (and back) in time she travels and along the way comes face to face with those who forged her family...and herself. Historical and mythical, Aria’s story will compel readers to want to hear the tales and see the faces etched along the branches of their own family tree.”

ーMaria Pritchard

Author and Retired Educator

The story is a journey through intimate glimpses painting a history of cultures subtly told in generational sequences and family tales. It never lets go of being in the present, skeptical while knowing that reality and magic might both exist. The reader is taken along it all, as if told a magical story, which despite historical connections between the mysteries, it really is. The Silver Branch tells a story in changing layers more parallel than mixing, and as far-away magical as the nearness of home.

ーJonathan Beck M.D.

Rediscovering God’s Grand Story In a Fragmented World of Pieces and Parts【電子書籍】[ James M. Roseman ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Rediscovering God’s Grand Story In a Fragmented World of Pieces and Parts【電子書籍】[ James M. Roseman ]

In the passage to modernity we in the West have lost the ability to see things whole. We've closed our minds to all things transcendent and default to unbelief, and can't make sense of the persistent echoes of the voice of God that reverberate in our souls. In Rediscovering God's Grand Story, James Roseman picks up the strands of science, philosophy, history, the arts, and theology, and reweaves the tapestry to see a coherent story that makes the best sense of the world and provides real meaning and significance to our lives--God's Grand Myth. We see that the signals of transcendence that confound our culture of doubt are a universal language and vocabulary of the heart echoing the voice of God; and in the very Judeo-Christian story we so readily jettison is found the Author enabling us to see the world whole again. This essay tells why the story and promise of Christianity is so hard to hear today but won't go away. Could it be that, as T. S. Eliot wrote in the mid-twentieth century, "at the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time"?

Out of Time's Abyss【電子書籍】[ Edgar Rice Burroughs ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Out of Time's Abyss【電子書籍】[ Edgar Rice Burroughs ]

Out of Time’s Abyss is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the third of his Caspak trilogy. The sequence was first published in Blue Book Magazine as a three-part serial in the issues for September, October and November 1918, with Out of Time's Abyss forming the third installment. The complete trilogy was later combined for publication in book form under the title of The Land That Time Forgot (the title of the first part) by A. C. McClurg in June 1924. Beginning with the Ace Books editions of the 1960s, the three segments have usually been issued as separate short novels.

Out of Time's Abyss is a direct sequel to The Land That Time Forgot and The People That Time Forgot, continuing the lost world saga begun in the earlier stories. It connects the previous two installments, bringing in characters introduced in each. Burroughs completes the revelation of his lost world's unique biological system, only hinted at in the previous installment, in which the slow progress of evolution in the world outside is recapitulated as a matter of individual metamorphosis. This system forms a thematic element serving to unite the three otherwise rather loosely linked Caspak stories.

The book begins with Bradley, who had left Fort Dinosaur on an expedition in the first novel and never returned. Bradley and his party are attempting to return to Fort Dinosaur. Along the way, they encounter a creature which appears to be a flying dead man. Some of the members of the party consider it to be a ghost or banshee. Tippet is convinced that he is soon to die, and the next day he is killed by a Tyrannosaurus. The ghost-like creature is seen again, and James is killed by a Smilodon. Bradley disappears during the night, and the remaining members of the party make it safely to Fort Dinosaur.

Bradley had been captured by the ghost-like creature, which is soon revealed to be a naturally winged human being, belonging to a subgroup of humanity known as the Wieroo. The Wieroo takes Bradley to the island of Oo-oh, set in Caspak's inland sea. It attempts to keep Bradley in a prison, but he escapes through a secret passage. He meets Co-Tan, a girl of the highest human race of mainland Caspak, the Galu, fully human and of a neolithic cultural level. They enter the chamber of the Wieroo king, a huge member of the race, and Bradley kills the creature with its own sword.

Co-Tan and Bradley escape the city of the Wieroo and live for several months on the forested coast of Oo-oh. Finally, though, they are discovered by Wieroo. They succeed in capturing two of the Wieroo and forcing them to fly to the mainland, one bearing each of the humans.

Read the complete novel for further story....

The Land That Time Forgot【電子書籍】[ Edgar Rice Burroughs ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Land That Time Forgot【電子書籍】[ Edgar Rice Burroughs ]

The Land That Time Forgot is a fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Caspak trilogy. His working title for the story was "The Lost U-Boat." The sequence was first published in Blue Book Magazine as a three-part serial in the issues for September, October and November 1918. The complete trilogy was later combined for publication in book form under the title of the first part by A. C. McClurg in June 1924. Beginning with the Ace Books editions of the 1960s, the three segments have usually been issued as separate short novels.

Starting out as a harrowing wartime sea adventure, Burroughs’s story ultimately develops into a lost world story reminiscent of such novels as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World (1912) and Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island (1874) and Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864). Burroughs adds his own twist by postulating a unique biological system for his lost world, in which the slow progress of evolution in the world outside is recapitulated as a matter of individual metamorphosis. This system is only hinted at in The Land That Time Forgot; presented as a mystery whose explication is gradually worked out over the course of the next two novels, it forms a thematic element serving to unite three otherwise rather loosely linked stories.

The novel is set in World War I and opens with a framing story in which a manuscript relating the main story is recovered from a thermos off the coast of Greenland. It purports to be the narrative of Bowen J. Tyler, an American passenger sunk in the English Channel by a German U-boat, U-33, in 1916. He and a woman named Lys La Rue are rescued by a British tugboat. The tug is also sunk, but its crew manages to capture the submarine when it surfaces. Unfortunately, all other British craft continue to regard the sub as an enemy, and they are unable to bring it to port. Sabotage to the navigation equipment sends the U-33 astray into the South Pacific. The imprisoned German crew retakes the sub and begins a raiding cruise, only to be overcome again by the British. A saboteur continues to guide the sub off course, and by the time he is found out it is in Antarctic waters.

The U-33 is now low on fuel, with its provisions poisoned by the saboteur Benson. A large island ringed by cliffs is encountered, and identified as Caprona, a land mass first reported by the fictitious Italian explorer Caproni in 1721 whose location was subsequently lost. A freshwater current guides the sub to a stream issuing from a subterranean passage, which is entered on the hope of replenishing the water supply. The U-boat surfaces into a tropical river teeming with primitive creatures extinct elsewhere; attacked, it submerges again and travels upstream in search of a safe harbor. It enters a thermal inland sea, essentially a huge crater lake, whose heat sustains Caprona’s tropical climate. As the sub travels north along the island’s waterways the climate moderates and wildlife undergoes an apparent evolutionary progression.

The Law of Civilization and Decay: An Essay on History【電子書籍】[ Peter Chardon Brooks Adams ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Law of Civilization and Decay: An Essay on History【電子書籍】[ Peter Chardon Brooks Adams ]

When the Romans first emerged from the mist of fable, they were already a race of land-owners who held their property in severalty, and, as the right of alienation was established, the formation of relatively large estates had begun. The ordinary family, however, held, perhaps, twelve acres, and, as the land was arable, and the staple grain, it supported a dense rural population. The husbandmen who tilled this land were of the martial type, and, probably for that reason, though supremely gifted as administrators and soldiers, were ill-fitted to endure the strain of the unrestricted economic competition of a centralized society. Consequently their conquests had hardly consolidated before decay set in, a decay whose causes may be traced back until they are lost in the dawn of history. The Latins had little economic versatility; they lacked the instinct of the Greeks for commerce, or of the Syrians and Hindoos for manufactures. They were essentially land-owners, and, when endowed with the acquisitive faculty, usurers. The latter early developed into a distinct species, at once more subtle of intellect and more tenacious of life than the farmers, and on the disparity between these two types of men, the fate of all subsequent civilization has hinged. At a remote antiquity Roman society divided into creditors and debtors; as it consolidated, the power of the former increased, thus intensifying the pressure on the weak, until, when centralization culminated under the C?sars, reproduction slackened, disintegration set in, and, after some centuries of decline, the Middle Ages began. The history of the monarchy must probably always remain a matter of conjecture, but it seems reasonably certain that the expulsion of the Tarquins was the victory of an hereditary monied caste, which succeeded in concentrating the functions of government in a practically self-perpetuating body drawn from their own order.[1] Niebuhr has demonstrated, in one of his most striking chapters, that usury was originally a patrician privilege; and some of the fiercest struggles of the early republic seem to have been decided against the oligarchy by wealthy plebeians, who were determined to break down the monopoly in money-lending. At all events, the conditions of life evidently favoured the growth of the instinct which causes its possessor to suck the vitality of the economically weak; and Macaulay, in the preface to Virginia, has given so vivid a picture of the dominant class, that one passage at least should be read entire.

On 26 December 2004, Australian ex-pat, Craig Baxter, drowned in the tsunami that engulfed Phi Phi Island, Thailand. He was one of some 270,000 souls over several continents who lost their lives that day in a matter of hours.

Craig's Thai bride of nine months, Maliwan, was pregnant but miraculously survived. She still bears the physical and emotional scars of the worst natural disaster in recent history.

When Maliwan accepted her mother-in-law Sandra's offer to help raise the child in Australia, life took a dramatic new direction for them both. The decade after the tsunami was a steep learning curve for the two women of different generations and cultures who shared no common language.

The story includes Sandra's observations as a farang in three rites of passage in Thailand: her son's traditional wedding, his funeral only nine months later, and the birth of his and Maliwan's child.

The narrative is laced with humour, as misunderstandings lead to frustrations that are set aside in the interests of Demi, Australia's littlest tsunami survivor.

Little Women【電子書籍】[ Louisa May Alcott ]

Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832?1888), which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the books over several months at the request of her publisher. Following the lives of the four March sistersーMeg, Jo, Beth and Amyーthe novel details their passage from childhood to womanhood and is loosely based on the author and her three sisters. Scholars classify Little Women as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel.

Four teenaged sisters and their mother, Marmee, live in a new neighborhood (loosely based on Concord) in Massachusetts in genteel poverty. Having lost all his money, their father is acting as a pastor, miles from home, involved in the American Civil War. The women face their first Christmas without him.

Meg and Jo March, the elder two, have to work in order to support the family: Meg teaches a nearby family of four children; Jo assists her aged great-aunt March, a wealthy widow living in a mansion, Plumfield. Beth, too timid for school is content to stay at home and help with housework; Amy is still at school. Meg is beautiful and traditional, Jo is a tomboy who writes; Beth is a peacemaker and a pianist; Amy is an artist who longs for elegance and fine society.

Jo is impulsive and quick to anger. One of her challenges is trying to control her anger, a challenge that her mother experiences. She advises Jo to speak with forethought before leaving to travel to Washington, where her husband has pneumonia.

Their neighbour, Mr. Laurence, who is charmed by Beth, gives her a piano. Beth contracts scarlet fever after spending time with a poor family where three children die. Jo tends Beth in her illness. Beth recovers, but never fully. As a precaution, Amy is sent to live with Aunt March, replacing Jo, while Beth was ill and still infectious.

Jo has success earning money with her writing. Meg spends two weeks with friends, where there are parties for the girls to dance with boys and improve social skills. Theodore 'Laurie' Laurence, Mr. Laurence's grandson, is invited to one of the dances, as her friends incorrectly think Meg is in love with him. Meg is more interested in John Brooke, Laurie's young tutor. Brooke goes to Washington to help Mr. March. While with the March parents, Brooke confesses his love for Meg. They are pleased but consider Meg too young to be married. Brooke agrees to wait but enlists and serves a year or so in the war. After he is wounded, he returns to find work so he can buy a house ready for when he marries Meg. Laurie goes off to college, having become smitten by Jo. On Christmas Day, a year after the book's opening, the girls' father returns from the war.

Read the complete novel for further story....

Aviaries is a novella composed of random diary entries, vignettes, dreams, observations, interior monologues, meditations, short anecdotes, newspaper headlines, and excerpts from poetry and prose, central among which is a passage from C.G. Jung's essay on the Kore. All these elements meld together in a collapse of time to create, similar to the work of Unica Z?rn and Leonora Carrington, a phantasmagoria of the life of a woman navigating a city indifferent to those living on the margins. Interactions with other residents of Prague’s Sm?chov district, characters who might be figments of her imagination, and the other women in her life ? infirm mother, artsy sister, absent, dumpster-diving daughter ? have reached a point where fantasy and reality seamlessly merge. The death of V?clav Havel in 2011 provides the opening, and from there the prose throbs in a kaleidoscope of contemporary news reports, flights of hallucination, wordplay, and metaphoric association to testify to what it is like to be alone and lost and indigent in a world that has stopped making sense. It is an unsparing vision of present-day Prague where life has become a morass of the bizarre and the grotesque.

Brabcov?’s final book before her unexpected death, Aviaries received the Josef ?kvoreck? Award in 2016 for best prose of the year and was shortlisted for the Magnesia Litera Book of the Year Award in 2017.
