Memories of a Jane Street Boy

By: Michael F. McCarthy

Memories of a Jane Street Boy is the fictionalized version of the impact one family and special group of friends have had on the life of Michael McCarthy from his early childhood all the way through high school, their impressions and lessons having a lifetime effect. Predominately focused between the years of 1951 and 1969, Michael’s tale is one of friendships’ rites of passage, adventures and misadventures, successes and failures, love lost and love found, which transcends any era. Any person of any age can find commonality with his story of growing up and learning lessons and causing mischief along the way.

About the Author

Michael F. McCarthy Colonel USAF (Ret) was born in South Dakota in June 1951. His family then moved to Wisconsin, where he lived until he was five. They then relocated back to his mother’s hometown in New England and attended a Catholic grammar school and then a four-year college preparatory school. At age thirteen, he began working at a florist’s and then, at sixteen, for a non-union trucking company. He later earned his BS in mathematics and, in 1973, entered the United States Air Force, receiving his Commission in December 1973. He spent the next thirty-plus years as a USAF officer, first as a crewmember, then as an instructor and flight commander in the Air Training Command and in Headquarters ATC and in the Pentagon. In 1994 he achieved the rank of full colonel, and in 2004 he retired from the USAF. For the next eleven years, he worked as a defense contractor supporting training programs within the intelligence community.

McCarthy retired for the final time in October 2014. He now resides in northern Virginia with El Hierro, his big German shepherd, several miles from his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons.

The Line Combat in Korea, January-February 1951【

Many combat veterans refuse to discuss their experiences on the line. With the passage of time and the unreliability of memory, it becomes difficult to understand the true nature of war. In The Line: Combat in Korea, January?February 1951, retired Army colonel William T. Bowers uses firsthand, eyewitness accounts of the Korean War to offer readers an intimate look at the heroism and horror of the battlefront. These interviews of soldiers on the ground are particularly telling because they were conducted by Army historians immediately following combat. Known as the "forgotten war," the action in Korea lasted from June 1950 until July 1953 and was particularly savage for its combatants. During the first few months of the war, American and U.N. soldiers conducted rapid advances and hasty withdrawals, risky amphibious landings and dangerous evacuations, all while facing extreme weather conditions. In early 1951, the first winter of the war, frigid cold and severe winds complicated combat operations. As U.N. forces in Korea retreated from an oncoming Chinese and North Korean attack, U.S. commanders feared they would be forced to withdraw from occupation and admit to a Communist victory. Using interviews and extensive historical research, The Line analyzes how American troops fought the enemy to a standstill over this pivotal two-month period, reversing the course of the war. In early 1951, the war had nearly been lost, but by February's end, there existed the possibility of preserving an independent South Korea. Bowers compellingly illustrates how a series of small successes at the regiment, battalion, company, platoon, squad, and soldier levels ensured that the line was held against the North Korean enemy. The Line is the first of three volumes detailing combat during the Korean War. Each book focuses on the combat experiences of individual soldiers and junior leaders. Bowers enhances our understanding of combat by providing explanatory analysis and supplemental information from official records, giving readers a complete picture of combat operations in this understudied theatre. Through searing firsthand accounts and an intense focus on this brief but critical time frame, The Line offers new insights into U.S. military operations during the twentieth century and guarantees that the sacrifices of these courageous soldiers will not be lost to history.

The Secret Dispatch, Or, The Adventures of Captain Balgonie【電子書籍】[ James Grant ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Secret Dispatch, Or, The Adventures of Captain Balgonie【電子書籍】[ James Grant ]

Excerpt: ""Heaven aid me! here am I nowーwhich way shall I turnーadvance or retire?" exclaimed Balgonie, as his horse came plunging down almost on its knees, amid wild gorse and matted jungle. A cold day in the middle of April had passed away; a pale and cheerless sun, that had cast no heat on the leafless scenery and the half-frozen marshes that border the Louga in Western Russia, had sunk, and the darkness of a stormy night came on rapidly. The keen blast of the north, that swept the arid scalps of the Dudenhof (the only range of hills that traverses the ancient Ingria), was bellowing through a gorge, where the Louga poured in foam upon its passage to the Gulf of Finland, between steep banks that were covered by gloomy pines, when the speaker, a mounted officer in Russian uniform, who seemed too surely to have lost his way, reined up a weary and mud-covered horse on the margin of the stream, and by the light that yet lingered on the tops of the tall pines, and gilded faintly the metal-covered domes of a distant building on the opposite bank, looked hopelessly about him for the means of crossing the dangerous river."

Dante's Inferno: A Wanderer in Hell【電子書籍】[ Alexis Brooks de Vita ]

For an urban English-speaker in the twenty-first century, the original language of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, the first act of his trilogy, the Comedy, would read like a shockingly accurate critique of today’s globalized society, if we could understand it. Dante’s Inferno: A Wanderer in Hell gives second-millennial English-language readers a chance to share the pathos, the humor, and the raw political aggression of Dante’s vision of Hell.

Dante’s Inferno: A Wanderer in Hell preserves the meaning of Dante’s verses, line by line. Where a literal translation of his highly philosophical but often slang-rich text will not make sense for the twenty-first century English-speaking reader, the most reasonable compromise of the literal and figurative is used.

Written in exile from Florence, Dante’s Inferno speaks to those of us today who question our own and our societies’ values. Dante, lost in the middle of his lifetime, wanders behind Virgil down the narrow safe passage through Hell’s increasingly nightmarish suffering. On this horrendous journey, Dante will come to understand the consequences of the social evils running rampant in Europe’s cancerously spreading empire that values profits more than people and teaches its citizens to prize their own personal pleasure above principle, spreading sexual license, gang turf war, and international political and religious violence.

Last Hope of Eden follows twin teenagers who can summon a Mighty Angel who helps them in dire times of need. Zak and Sarah learn about "their" angel through near tragedies when they're five and ten years old. They serve in the mission field with their parents in Africa, endure bullies at school, grow in their faith through adolescence, attend high school in Edinburg, Scotland and visit their Uncle Joe, Aunt Mary and cousins Airo, Run, Shy and Ruby annually on the island of Eden in the North Sea. When they're sixteen they're asked to go on a mission to rescue their cousins who've been taken from King's Forest by shadow-demons and forced into a vortex that took them to the Remnant Forest, a forest within a forest. Uncle Joe and Aunt Mary are visited by a saint who tells them the whereabouts of all the children who were taken. They'd heard legends from the local townspeople about mystical King's Forest and the missing Rings of Eden, but didn't believe them until most of the children of Eden were taken. The Twins learn about the Crossing, the Remnant Forest, the Rings of Eden and the Tree of Life and its existence on the island of Eden. They also learn about Solomon the bird of wisdom, bushes of fire, secret caverns with ancient scrolls in them, a hidden sanctuary, horned white lions, Simeon and his most powerful prayer, valley tribesmen, King David, the first war on Eden three-thousand years earlier and much more. They're told that Sargon was defeated in the first war and that he's back for revenge and is seeking the missing Rings of Eden and the Tree of Life. To rescue their cousins and save the Remnant Forest the Twins must endure attacks and deception from a mysterious man in a red hat and black overalls, from shadow-demons, Sinisters, saber-wolves, Sargon and Cyrus the sons of the leader of the dark world, a bully named Victor, demon warriors and many others. Fortunately, they're helped along the way by St. Harley, a magi, brothers Sam and Dan who lead the Remnant Forest armies, Elijah the curator of the Tent of Meeting, Joshua the Minianite, angels, the forests themselves and others. Zak and Sarah follow St. Harley through the Crossing that has shadow-demons tracing through it who are on a mission of their own to stop the Twins from entering the Remnant Forest. St. Harley leads them through the Crossing to the Passage of the Realms the entrance to the Remnant Forest. The duo are caught in a whirlpool, trapped in a natural living bridge, and Sarah's almost lost to the dark world while in the Crossing. St. Harley and Joshua know much of the history of Eden and they teach Zak and Sarah about the first war on Eden and how King David wore the Rings of Eden in battle, and they made him invincible. They learn the Remnant Forest was created by the hand of God at a pivotal moment in Eden's history when the Tree of Life was set on fire by Sargon's demon warriors. The duo takes a leap of faith into the Passage and land in the Remnant Forest where they're greeted by a half-man who leads them to the City of Levi where they meet Elijah the curator of the Tent of Meeting and learn more about Eden while looking into the Window of History. They're given a test of faith, they swim through underwater caverns, trek through forest trails that open and close for them, battle demon warriors and find the three-story heart that keeps the Remnant Forest alive. Sargon and Cyrus have a weapon never seen before in the earthly realm. Scepters of Destruction that create lightening and produce fiery tornadoes that wreak havoc on the battlefields. Sargon and his army must climb a mountain to get to the City of Levi and use the Window of History to find the Rings of Eden. Tribesmen fight off the attack of demon warriors as they climb up the mountain and the Twins join the fight with their Mighty Angel and cousins in a final battle armed with spears, swords, arrows, hope and prayer as they try to win the war between good and evil.

Venus and Adonis is a poem written in 1592?1593 and published in 1609. It recounts Venus' attempts to woo Adonis, their passionate coupling, and Adonis' rejection of the goddess, to which she responds with jealousy, with tragic results. The Rape of Lucrece, published in 1594, is a narrative poem focusing on the rape and tragic death of the title character and on the revenge that follows. A Lover's Complaint is a narrative poem published as an appendix to the original edition of Shakespeare's sonnets. It is given the title "A Lover's Complaint" in the book, which was published in 1609. William Shakespeare (1564 ? 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

Having lost his mom to cancer and fought through grief to finish high school, he's now got secret desires to contend with. It's Christmas in Sydney, and he's ready to cast his worries aside for the summer holidays, a time of poolside parties, bush walks and ocean swims. But who is the seductive young man who's moved into the spare room?

In this steamy coming-of-age novel, James and the men around him discover transformative new desires with the power to up-end lives and, just possibly, unlock a brighter future.

This promising debut explicitly captures rites of passage in an era of fluid sexuality and elusive masculinity. In this kaleidoscopic novel, four men act on new sexual desires, and in doing so, clarify who they are, who they want to be, and perhaps even what they stand for. With an authentic voice born of lived experience, Levi Huxton deftly and movingly portrays how sexual desire can lead us to come of age and re-invent ourselves, however old we may be.

---

Finalist, 2022 Lambda Literary Awards

Winner, 2022 Passionate Plume Prize

"Levi Huxton offers a rare reading experience: erotic, sexy and intellectually engaging." - DNA Magazine, April 2022

9.5 out of 10 - "Erotic and honest, readers will be wrapped under the spell of the main character...The author capably creates emotional depth, making the conclusion especially impactful. A poignant and thoughtful storyteller." - The 2021 BookLife Prize

"The Lodger, That Summer is Mr. Huxton's first published work. A perfect blend of fantasy and reality, Huxton's characters are flawed and intriguing, and his writing is smooth and addictive. I can't wait to see what he writes next." - Marley Valentine, author of Without You

"*This book is not a romance and it is not intended to be one. It is, however, many other things. It is a highly charged erotic tale, a coming out story, a coming-of-age story, and a sexual awakening, but it also drives deeper to target and expose those hidden parts of a man's soul.It is great to have found a new voice in author Levi Huxton with this debut book. His candor creates not only a melancholy spirit to parts of the story, but also an atmosphere that is tinged with tension, anticipation, and hope.*"- Joyfully Jay

"Refreshing and beautifully written, while gritty and erotic at the same time." - Reviews by Amos Lassen

"Lush, one of my top reads of 2021. Five Seats【電子書籍】[ Leonie Vorster ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Five Seats【電子書籍】[ Leonie Vorster ]

Five Seats is a psychological account of the brutal impact of violence on the ordinary lives of an unhappy wife, an imposing businesswoman, a God-fearing apostate, a fierce temptress and a skinny little girl who live in South Africa. As the five victims each struggle with unspeakable truths, their vulnerability and unravelling become inevitable. When they are about to give up on life, the girl-child follows a hidden passage into a basement where the four women are waiting to go on a quest in search of what they had lost.

“Beautifully written with a rare vulnerability and honesty. Intriguing, with just enough clues to prepare the reader for a terrifying yet wonderful choice.” Heather Snyman, Trauma Counsellor and EMDR Therapist

About the Author

Leonie Vorster is a Research Psychologist from Johannesburg, South Africa. She is also an award-winning strategist, and a writer. Her work is inspired by everyday life in one of the most beautiful, fascinating, and complicated countries in the world, and by her travels to others.

www.fiveseats.org

Five Seats is a magical realism novel. The unique characteristics of five protagonists and their harsh realities are combined with magical manifestations of their internal lives. Parts of the novel lean towards the style of realistic fiction, whereas other parts are written in the style of personal reflection or memoir. The style parallels the nature of the five main characters: Ancient Woman, Madonna and Little Girl are the more primal characters, whereas Working Girl and Virago are more reflective, but also more detached, observing themselves from a distance.

The seeming disjointedness of the protagonists challenges the reader to explore why and how the characters develop, as they survive violent events and struggle with the fallout. They inevitably fall apart, realising that they will not survive if they cannot overcome, and come together. Elements of magic run throughout the book, and fuse in the end. The characters’ transformations are both real-world and symbolic, rendering their development relevant to anyone reading the book.

Five Seats is a literary commentary on dogmatism, hypocrisy, privilege, and the devastating impact of various forms of violence. Finally, the story also conveys hope and the belief that every person’s journey, no matter how easy or hard, has meaning, is worthwhile, and ‘magically’ happens exactly as it should.

That groan is what leads to a depressed state of mind and anxious thoughts. But in this book, you will finally come to know why you have that groan and Who can fix it. This will not be a short-term fix like medication and therapy. This will be transformative, empowering, and peace-filling.

Your life will never be the same after reading The Activated Word.

It may seem like the Enemy has won over your mind, but I can assure you that God ALWAYS has the final say. Before you were formed, He knew you, loved you, and purposed you. So rise up, woman of God, and let's activate!

Praise about The Activated Word

"I suffered from debilitating anxiety and depression for 50 years. The morning after I read The Activated Word, rather than awaking with my usual dread, I woke with a feeling of lightness. As I went about my morning, I felt different. A few hours into my day, I realized that my anxiety was gone. The fear, worry, and stress that occupied a large portion of my brain most of the time had been quieted. I felt astonishingly normal. That feeling persisted for a week or two.

When the anxiety began to creep back into my consciousness, I again read The Activated Word. Again, I felt better. For weeks now, when I feel the familiar fear coming back, I read a prayer or a passage from Adriel's book, and it always soothes my soul. I highly recommend The Activated Word to anyone wanting to vanquish anxiety!" -Jennifer

The Liberation of Italy, 1815-1870【電子書籍】[ Contess Evelyn Lilian Hazeldine Carrington Martinengo-Cesaresco ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Liberation of Italy, 1815-1870【電子書籍】[ Contess Evelyn Lilian Hazeldine Carrington Martinengo-Cesaresco ]

The unity of Italy, which the statesmen of Europe and all save a small number of the Italians themselves still regarded as an utopia when it was on the verge of accomplishment, was, nevertheless, desired and foreseen by the two greatest intellects produced by the Italian race. Dante conceived an Italy united under the Empire, which returning from a shameful because self-imposed exile would assume its natural seat in Rome. To him it was a point of secondary interest that the Imperial Lord happened to be bred beyond the Alps, that he was of Teutonic, not of Latin blood. If the Emperor brought the talisman of his authority to the banks of the Tiber, Italy would overcome the factions which rent her, and would not only rule herself, but lead mankind. Vast as the vision was, Dante cannot be called presumptuous for having entertained it. The Rome of the C?sars, the Rome of the Popes, had each transformed the world: Italy was transforming it for a third time at that moment by the spiritual awakening which, beginning with the Renaissance, led by inevitable steps to the Reformation. The great Florentine poet had the right to dream that his country was invested with a providential mission, that his people was a chosen people, which, by its own fault and by the fault of others, had lost its way, but would find it again. Such was Dante's so-called Ghibelline programmeーless Ghibelline than intensely and magnificently Italian. His was a mind too mighty to be caged within the limits of partisan ambitions. The same may be said of Machiavelli. He also imagined, or rather discerned in the future, a regenerate Italy under a single head, and this, not the advancement of any particular man, was the grand event he endeavoured to hasten. With the impatience of a heart consumed by the single passion of patriotism, he conjured his fellow-countrymen to seize the first chance that presented itself, promising or unpromising, of reaching the goal. The concluding passage in the Principe was meant as an exhortation; it reads as a prophecy. 'We ought not therefore,' writes Machiavelli, 'to let this occasion pass whereby, after so long waiting, Italy may behold the coming of a saviour. Nor can I express with what love he would be received in all those provinces which have suffered from the foreign inundations; with what thirst of vengeance, with what obstinate faith, with what worship, with what tears! What doors would be closed against him? What people would deny him obedience? What jealousy would oppose him? What Italian would not do him honour? The barbarous dominion of the stranger stinks in the nostrils of all.' Another man of genius, an Italian whom a fortuitous circumstance made the citizen and the master of a country not his own, grasped both the vital necessity of unity from an Italian point of view, and the certainty of its ultimate achievement. Napoleon's notes on the subject, written at St Helena, sum up the whole question without rhetoric but with unanswerable logic: 'Italy is surrounded by the Alps and the sea. Her natural limits are defined with as much exactitude as if she were an island. Italy is only united to the Continent by 150 leagues of frontier, and these 150 leagues are fortified by the highest barrier that can be opposed to man. Italy, isolated between her natural limits, is destined to form a great and powerful nation. Italy is one nation; unity of customs, language and literature must, within a period more or less distant, unite her inhabitants under one sole government. And Rome will, without the slightest doubt, be chosen by the Italians as their capital.'

Dark Night Reclaiming the Discarded Other on the Journey to Wholeness【電子書籍】[ Susan Wright Ed.D. ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Dark Night Reclaiming the Discarded Other on the Journey to Wholeness【電子書籍】[ Susan Wright Ed.D. ]

The world is in a dark night. Imbalance in many areas of our lives - masculine and feminine, material and spiritual, conscious and unconscious - has contributed to immense suffering, both within and without. To bring this incongruence into harmony in ourselves, we must reclaim the discarded qualities we have seen as other than who we are. This is the quest of the perilous dark night journey. To heal our fragmented earth, we must first become whole individuals who are then capable of contributing to a whole world. This book names the current dark night dis-ease and frames a process for navigating the passage. Using her own lost feminine story as well as other examples, the author leads us through the stages with a compelling blend of matter-of-fact and mystical. Many of us beyond life's midpoint descend into darkness due to loss of a job, a relationship, good health, or an awakening to the shallowness of our inner being. Rather than floundering in this confusing morass or numbing it with addictions, Dark Night offers an optimistic alternative that normalizes the experience and provides practical pathways and coaching guidance to light the route to wholeness.

God's Perfect Timing: A Literal Approach to Chronology in the Bible【電子書籍】[ Melvin J Woodard III ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】God's Perfect Timing: A Literal Approach to Chronology in the Bible【電子書籍】[ Melvin J Woodard III ]

We are creatures of time. It affects every moment of our lives. Yet when we study the Bible, our focus tends to be on principles and personalities rather than on how the events of redemptive history were perfectly timed by God. Since my own study of the Bible's timeline opened my eyes to some of God's biggest truths, my goals is to introduce as many people as possible to the rich experience of studying Scripture with a focus on God's timing.
Second Peter 3:8 states, "But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" (NKJV). Whether the time frame is accurate is not the question now, but this passage suggests that a day of time is much different for God from how it is for us, His creation. It is hard for me to comprehend how a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day, but that is how it appears to God.
The Almighty stands outside of time. He created time and operates within it when He chooses. God can move in and out of time as He desires. Wayne Grudem rightfully states, :It is evident throughout Scripture that God acts within time and acts differently at different points in time." (1)
The Bible records what God has done in the past and what He plans to do in the future to bring us to salvation. If we study Scripture well, we will discover a number of important things about how God operates. From the very beginning of human history, man has needed a Savior (see Genesis 3:15). Although Jesus Christ came nearly 2,000 years ago, we are waiting for Him to return and finish what He started.
The church worldwide needs to be awake when Jesus Christ returns. Believers do not want to be like the disciples who fell asleep in the garden of Gethsemane, failing to pray and keep watch with Jesus (Matthew 26:36-46). If we are spiritually asleep when Jesus returns, we will miss one of the greatest moments in the history of the world. We must keep our lamps trimmed and burning.
This is why it's crucial for us to pay attention to the Bible's timeline. The purpose of this book is to give you (the reader) important keys to help you better understand God's plan and His character through studying the time frame of Scripture. God is marching methodically through His Word. The book of Revelation instructs us that God's Word has not come to an end yet, but the end of this time of grace and salvation is approaching. We must use the precious time we have to reach the lost--those who have yet to receive Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as their personal Savior. He is the Savior of the world.
Through my countless hours of study into God's timing I have become a different person. I fully know and trust that God will act when He is ready according to His timetable, not mine. He has taught me to be patient and endure difficult circumstances with a sense of hope and expectancy. I hope this book will do the same for you. May God open your eyes to the wonders of His perfect timing as you read on.

Moruga Tales by June Lee-Sing Khan
ISBN: 978-0-9878256-3-6 (eBook)
Second Edition eBook published May 2021

The author spent her early years in the village of Grand Chemin in the district of Moruga. Grand Chemin is a seaside village on the south coast of Trinidad and to this day it is still very rural in nature, forgotten by Time and the Government.

She grew up hearing the stories of the strange and supernatural creatures that haunted the area and filled the inhabitants with dread and wonder. It was with hair-raising excitement and anticipation that she listened to these stories told by school friends and others, and her imagination ran wild as she experienced vicariously the exploits of the heroes who lived to tell the tale.

The “doorstep group” in the tales is composed of young people and children. Some of the names of the people in this group are of actual people she knew in the village and she uses these people to tell the stories. However, the stories they tell are pure fiction and they never really experienced whatever befell the characters in them. For example, June (the author) told a story of douens but she never saw one and Cecil surely never met a real diablesse. As well, the characters in the stories that the group tells are all fictitious and bear no resemblance to anyone extant. The stories come from the author’s imagination while using the folklore of Moruga as a framework upon which to flesh out the characters and the plots. As for the tale about the mermaid, that is the author’s own story. Indeed, the only mermaid she had ever heard anything about was the one from Hans Christian Andersen.

With the passage of time, it is possible that the oral tradition of storytelling may die out and important folklore may be lost. The author remembers the thrill and excitement of the story-telling sessions of her childhood and in her later years has decided to share her experiences.

In this second edition of Moruga Tales, two new tales have been added. The stories are printed in the order in which they were written so the reader may notice a change in narration style as the stories progress. The first two stories are written in the Trini dialect of the 1940's and are not too complicated. The later stories are basically in third person format with the dialect appearing when the characters speak. The last two were written after the publication of the original book and the author hopes that these will continue to grip your imagination. They are in a slightly different vein from the others and do not take place in Grand Chemin and environs (neither does Tale #9 where the setting is anywhere in Trinidad). Their locations, however, are still in the large area called Moruga.

Dim your lights, turn off the television, radio and computer, shut down the cell phone and take the landline off the hook. Light a candle and surround yourself in an aura of mystery. Now, remove yourself to a time and place remote from today’s hustle and bustle. Read, laugh and be entertained!

Weary of family conflicts and social friction, Brenna used every bit of her charm and wit to convince her husband, Garrick, that they should attend a music festival in the Nordan Coastal Colony. Neither of them had ever seen the ocean, and since their honeymoon had been cut short by his last deployment, Garrick finally agreed to go.

An expert musician, Brenna had never lost a piano competition in her life. Hours of daily practice, studying music theory and dedication to excellence endowed her skills that secretly bolstered the reticent woman's need for affirmation. She wanted to attend the festival, but for all the wrong reasons.

Garrick, with an especially difficult deployment behind him, is gradually recovering from combat trauma. His hypervigilance worries and wearies his wife, who too often takes the brunt of his impatience and paranoia. But the opposition he expressed to attending this music festival was rooted in the mysterious nature of Brenna's invitation. Why would a distant music festival invite her, when she hadn't competed in several years? Something about this particular festival bothered him.

A secretive and wealthy society of Kamerese business interests and ideologues has smuggled arms into the Nordan Colony and provided training for locals who have long chafed under Nordan rule. Eager to drag their war-weary ally, the Republic of Tamaria, into the conflict, the music festival serves as a trap to lure Brenna -- who has also earned Tamaria's highest honor for valor in combat -- to her death. Believing that her demise would serve as a catalyst to prompt Tamaria into war, Los Patrones del Estado pushes local insurgents to violently overthrow Nordan rule.

The resulting conflict is brutal, unpredictable and fraught with uncertain alliances. No one expected Garrick and Brenna to fight back. No one expected them to survive.

Relying on faith, their wits and military training, the amorous couple flee the conflict. Unable to read or speak the language, they strive to cross the border into nearby Kameron, where they expect to find safety among their allies for an uneventful return home. Members of Los Patrones, however, have other ideas.

Along the way, Garrick and Brenna rescue four orphaned children, whose father tried to abuse Brenna when she was a maiden. Caring for these young ones constrains the lovers' marital conduct and significantly complicates their efforts to escape.

Who can they trust? Can others trust them? Join the lovers as they seek safe passage across a hostile border while their way is obscured by Blood on the Warpath.

The Machine Stops is a short science fiction story signed by Edward Morgan Forster (A Passage to India) that describes a world in which almost all humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a 'cell', a standard room below ground, with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine.

Those who do not accept the deity of the Machine are viewed as 'unmechanical' and are threatened with "Homelessness". Eventually, the Machine apocalyptically collapses, and the civilization of the Machine comes to an end.

The story, written in 1909, has proved to be far ahead of its time, with remarkably accurate predictions of modern technologies and their over-dependence on them. As well as Forster's predicting globalisation, the internet, video conferencing, and other aspects of 21st-Century reality, ex-BBC's arts editor, Will Gompertz writing on the BBC website on 30 May 2020 and said: "The Machine Stops is not simply prescient; it is a jaw-droppingly, gob-smackingly, breath-takingly accurate literary description of lockdown life in 2020."

English novelist and essayist, Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was also known for his ironic novels examining class difference in early 20th-century British society. A Passage to India (1924) brought him his greatest success and he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 16 different years.

The Machine Stops ebook was developed by Atl?ntico Press, a publisher company present in the global editorial market, since 1992.

Daily Devotions That Guided the Savior【電子書籍】[ Joe Amaral ]

After the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem, the Jews were exiled to Babylon. Not only was there no longer a physical place to pray, even the sacred Scriptures were becoming scarce. Many of the biblical scrolls were lost or destroyed during the exile. In an attempt to preserve the Scriptures, the Rabbis divided up the biblical texts into weekly reading portions and distributed them among the families of Israel. Each was responsible for memorizing their assigned passage and then reading it in the synagogue every Sabbath.

This system of reading is the basis for the story found in Luke 4:16-17: "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him."

This system is still in use today by Jews all over the world. In What Would Jesus Read?, Joe Amaral gives modern day Christians the opportunity to follow and practice the same devotional system that Jesus used!

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】THY NAME IS VODUN CONVERSATIONS WITH MAMIWATA PRIESTESS【電子書籍】[ MamiWata Priestess ]

Mami Wata Priestess, through her conversations in a series of collected essays, describes traditional African Vodun and its mystery and beauty. Coming from the perspective of one initiated into the pantheon of the African Mami Wata she gives a unique glimpse into the often misunderstood world of African Vodun. In the pursuit of a doctorate, in African Psychology in the late 1990s, she traveled to Africa to do research but inadvertently found herself...her ancestors, the spirits that gave her life and her destiny. From 1998-2006 she immersed herself in traditional African culture and lay in initiation chambers from Benin to Togo to Ghana returning as the first authentically initiated priestess of the African Mami Wata. And, as a result has been serving the spirits every since.

Her story is the story of every individual born in the diaspora destined to retrace the footsteps of their ancestors and reconnect to a tradition refused them due to the transatlantic slave trade. Her distinctive instructive style delivers highly specialized details and points the audience towards the most direct access to the divine indicating the hallmark of a true initiate of Mami Wata. Within these pages one will be introduced to the majesty of African Vodun and its destined role in bridging the divinities and those destined to the sacred knowledge lost beginning with the Middle Passage. Through this sacred work what lies at the bottom of the sea and throughout the spiritual realm may formally be addressed as it was foretold within the ancient Priesthood of Ifa that such a time would come. Mami Wata Priestess works from Temple Behumbeza, in (Cotonou) Benin, with her husband Hounnon Behumbeza, the Supreme Chief of the pantheon of the African Mami Dan Vodun.

I was sure that I had seen Edwin Lawrence juggle with the pack. As I lay there wide awake in bed it all came back to me. I wondered how I could have been such an unspeakable idiot. We had dined together at the Trocadero; then we had gone on to the Empire. The big music hall was packed with people, the heat was insufferable.
“Let’s get out of this,” suggested Lawrence, almost as soon as we were in. “This crush, in this atmosphere, is not to be borne.” I agreed with him. We left. “Come into my place for an hour,” he said.
We both lived in Imperial Mansions, on the same floor. His number was 64, mine was 79. You went out of his door, along the passage, round the corner to the rightーthe second door on the right was mine. I went in with him.
“What do you say to a little gamble?” he asked. “It will be better than nothing.”
I agreed. We had a little gambleーat first for trivial stakes. I am an abstemious man. I had already drunk more than I was accustomed to. At his invitation I drank still more. We increased the stakes. I really do not know from whom the suggestion came, I know that I did not object. I had lost all my ready money. I kept on losing. He was dotting down, on a piece of paper, the extent of my indebtedness. Presently, when he announced the sum total, I was amazed to learn that it was very much more than I imaginedーactually nearly a thousand pounds.
A Life in the Saddle is an expansion on the account Rev. Davie Hogan left of his own life, which he entitled: Autobiography of David Hogan (1811-1899). The author will quote directly from this work in the following format, as in the following opening passage:

I propose on this the 16th day of February A.D. 1899, in the 88th year of my life, to continue the work of writing a biographic sketch of my life, from a very imperfect, or partially kept diary. I will here state, this work is only intended as a manuscript for the information of my children, grandchildren, and those who in the future may be interested in the history this writing may afford. I have tried to keep as far from self-laudation as possible. I therefore pray that whosoever may consult or read it, if they think they see a spirit of exultation, they will account for it, on other grounds than intention of the writer.

The rest of the text is comprised of quotes from other sources and background information researched and compiled by the author. Davie wrote for an audience with a base of shared experience and knowledge mostly lost to contemporary readers. The author has attempted to fill out Hogan's often terse or detail lacking account with the wealth of information on history, family members, and local color his ancestor neglected to include. By the way, the author, Brian Hogan, is Rev. Hogan's third great grandnephew.
