"Collins' ... debut novel ... is an extraordinary achievement in historical fiction that will transport readers through time while touching their hearts." ーK.C. Finn, Readers' Favorite ★★★★★

"This is a history book, and a family saga wrapped in a novel and is an excellent read."ーLucinda E. Clarke, Readers' Favorite ★★★★★

"Collins’ descriptions of his ancestors’ sufferings and the horrendous ‘coffin ships’ are harrowing." ーSusie Helme,best-selling author of The Lost Wisdom of the Magi, Goodreads ★★★★

This gripping fact-based fictional account, composed of three personal journals written as if by Collins' ancestors nearly two hundred years ago, contains their intimate, emotional stories, firsthand experiences, and traditions of old-world craftsmanship in a world being overtaken by technology.

Based on the legacies of two Boston Irish and Italian families, it is a perfect story for fans of historical Irish fiction by authors like Jean Grainger, Andrew Wareham, and Daisy O'Shea, fans of historical Italian fiction by Daniela Sacerdoti and Kate Quinn, and fans of historical biographical fiction and family sagas by writers like Mark Sullivan and Marie Benedict.

Forgotten by Time, Rediscovered by Fate

"A century after her birth, Jessie (Ambrosini) Collins is laid to rest beside her husband, Joseph Cornelius Collins, in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Milford, Massachusetts. Weeks later, while settling her estate, her children and grandchildren discover an old hope chest filled with the artifacts and memories of her life.

Among the curiosities and treasures is a tied bundle containing three handwritten journals, previously unknown to the family. In time, they would come to realize that what they held in their hands was the family legacyーpictures of life passed down by those who lived beforeーof how it was with them in their time."

The Odyssey of Cornelius Collins

It is 1845 the first year of the Great Famine in Ireland when fourteen-year-old Cornelius Collins begins a harrowing seven-year struggle for survival. At twenty, he escapes to Liverpool, England, securing a one-way third-class passage aboard a "coffin ship" bound for America. Against all odds, he survives the forty-one-day Atlantic crossing on the packet ship Clara Wheeler, landing in Boston, Massachusetts.

There, he is processed and released into the streets alone to face the "land sharks" eager to take what little he possesses, including his life. Fate intervenes, and an Irish American welfare society helps him find work as a bootmaker in the town of Milford. Determined, Cornelius vows to save every penny and send it back to Ireland to support his family.

Of Leather & Stone

As the decades pass, a highly prized pink granite is discovered in Milford triggering a "granite rush" attracting skilled stonecutters from around the world, including Giuseppe Ambrosini, a master stonecutter from Lombardy, Italy, a region renowned for its stone craftsmen. He comes to America seeking his fortune in the pink granite quarries of Milford.

Generations of their two families live through the most radical shift in industrial technology in the history of civilization, the disastrous effects of the American Civil War, widespread labor upheavals, the total collapse of the American economy, and the Irish Rebellion.

These events profoundly affect them and their American-born children, who unite their two families in marriage in the aftermath of ‘the war to end all war.’

The Remembering

"Theirs is the common fate of common people: living their lives without fanfare, known only to those who worked with them and those who loved them, then forgotten by timeーuntil one day, when they are remembered, and their names are spoken again by the living in THE REMEMBERING."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Shores of the Polar Sea "A Narrative of Arctic Expedition"【電子書籍】[ Edward L. Moss ]

HE ARCTIC EXPEDITION of 1875 left England on 29th May, crossed the Atlantic to Davis Straits in a succession of storms, and entered the Arctic regions on 4th July. It sailed with orders to "attain the highest northern latitude, and, if possible, reach the Pole." In old times, when voyages were longer than in these days of steam, a nautical frolic on crossing "the Line" helped to break the monotony of many a tedious passage. This time-honoured custom is slowly becoming a thing of the past. When it is gone, there will be little in sea or sky to make crossing the Equator in any way remarkable. The Tropic Zones are no better defined, and one can sail into or out of them without experiencing a sin-gle impressive sensation. But the Arctic Circle has obvious boundaries. A conspicuous change in the ordinary habits of nature warns the traveller that he is leaving the hospitable realms of earth behind him, and entering a region full of new experiences. Here familiar light and darkness cease to alternate, morning and evening no longer make the day, and in proportion as the latitude increases, day and night become mere figures of speech. While our two ships steamed northward along the west shores of Greenland, the novel charm of constant daylight was felt by every one. We all had our own ideas of what Arctic summer would be like, but ideas drawn from books rarely remain unchanged when brought face to face with reality. Although the passage into perpetual day was of course gradual, yet it was quite rapid enough to upset all regular habits. Most of us observed sadly irregular hours, but one energetic fellow-voyager, bent on making the most of his opportunities, stopped up for three days at a stretch. Our squadron consisted of H.M.SS. "Alert," "Discovery," and "Valorous," the latter vessel accompanying the Expedition as far as Disco, for the purpose of helping it so far northwards with its heavy stock of three years' provisions and fuel. On entering Davis Straits no one of the ships had the least idea where the others were. They had been separated in a cyclone on 13th June, and had crossed the Atlantic independently. Fortunately, how-ever, all three turned up almost simultaneously off the west coast of Greenland. Four days before crossing the Arctic Circle, the "Alert" and "Discovery" met under the rugged coast near Godhaab. As the ships approached, each anxiously scanned the other to see what damage had been done by the Atlantic storms. Boats soon passed from ship to ship, and it was amusing to note how both men and officers of either ship (the writer included) already placed the firmest faith in their own vessel, and underrated the seaworthiness of her consort. It was positively quite disappointing to find that the "Discovery's" spars were all right, and that she, like ourselves, had lost but one boat. Of course we congratulated each other on our good fortune; and good fortune it was, for our light, beautifully built boats could not be replaced, and few ships, heavily laden both below and on deck as ours were, would have passed through such weather without more serious loss..
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Pragmatic Vision Obama and the Enactment of the Affordable Care Act【電子書籍】[ Meena Bose ]

On March 23, 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law, providing every American with the opportunity to have guaranteed health care coverage. The Affordable Care Actーfrequently referred to as Obamacareーis almost synonymous with Obama’s presidential legacy and reflects a series of key decisions that he made beginning before he took office. As Meena Bose shows, it was Obama’s particular brand of pragmatic politics that ultimately shaped the passage of the Affordable Care Act and made a lasting mark on health care reform in the United States.

Pragmatic Vision examines eight of Obama’s decisions that resulted in the landmark enactment of health care reform, starting with his commitment to health care reform in the 2008 presidential campaign and concluding with his decision to allow for flexibility with its implementation, following technical hurdles and Supreme Court rulings. Bose shows that Obama’s steadfast commitment to the issue was crucial to its passing, especially after the Democrats lost their filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. Obama’s direct engagement built key political support for the legislation and was aided by the senior White House staff and Democratic leaders in Congress who skillfully navigated the bill to passage just fourteen months after Obama took office.

The story of Obama’s leadership in enacting the Affordable Care Act is a tale of today’s partisan divide and the polarization of Congress. The legislation passed on a party-line vote and continued to divide politicians long after its passage. Nevertheless, despite repeated efforts by Republicans to repeal the law, it is more popular today than ever and seems destined to remain in force until the next stage of reform. Pragmatic Vision is an authoritative guide to this singular achievement of the Obama administration.

Enter the hushed world of antiquarian books, where the scent of aged paper and whispered histories conceal deadly secrets. Elias Thorne, a rare book dealer with an uncanny eye for forgery, finds his quiet London bookshop thrust into a maelstrom of intrigue when a collection of Lord Byron’s lost love letters arrives on his doorstep. Hidden within their passionate prose lies a coded message, hinting at a modern-day assassination plot.

Drawn into a dangerous labyrinth, Elias’s investigation intertwines with the enigmatic Isabella Rossi, a captivating book collector whose knowledge of Byron both aids and unsettles him. Their shared passion for literary treasures ignites a spark, but is Isabella a pawn in a deadly game, or the mastermind behind it all?

From the bustling streets of London to the sun-drenched boulevards of Paris, Elias traces a network of rare book smugglers and shadowy figures who deal in forbidden knowledge. The discovery of a lost Byron play, rumored to contain explosive political commentary, adds another layer to the conspiracy. Could the assassination plot be a smokescreen, designed to conceal a far more sinister objective?

As Elias and Isabella’s connection deepens, every stolen glance, every shared laugh, becomes fraught with uncertainty. Elias struggles to reconcile his burgeoning feelings with the mounting evidence that suggests Isabella’s involvement in the unfolding plot. Could he be falling in love with the enemy?

With the help of Grace Holmes, a brilliant cryptographer and old friend, Elias unravels the layers of code, revealing a narrative of political intrigue and long-held grudges that span centuries. They uncover a clandestine organization known as the Scriptorium, guardians of forbidden knowledge, rumored to employ literary assassins to silence those who threaten their secrets.

The conspiracy takes on a new, more sinister dimension as Elias realizes he’s caught in a battle for knowledge itself, a battle with stakes far higher than he could have imagined. He discovers a hidden library, located beneath a historic London landmark, its entrance concealed behind a secret passage known only to a select few.

As the unveiling of the library approaches, Elias must confront Isabella, demanding answers. Her confession reveals a heartbreaking truth and forces them both to make impossible choices. Amidst the glittering world of a rare book auction, the climax unfolds. Secrets are exposed, loyalties are tested, and the future of forbidden knowledge hangs in the balance. In a heart-stopping confrontation, Elias and Isabella must choose their allegiances, their love for each other tested against the backdrop of a conspiracy that threatens to rewrite history.

tephen Graham (1884 - 15 March 1975) was a British journalist, travel-writer, essayist and novelist. His best-known books recount his travels around pre-revolutionary Russia and his journey to Jerusalem with a group of Russian Christian pilgrims. Most of his works express his sympathy for the poor, for agricultural labourers and for tramps, and his distaste for industrialisation.
I Returned to Russia last summer, visited as many of my old friends there as I could, arranged for the publication of some of my books in the Russian language, and incidentally travelled a great deal and saw a great many sides of Russian contemporary life, talked also with all manner of Russians. I travelled to Bergen in Norway, from Bergen obtained a passage round the North Cape to Vard?, the last port of Norway, transhipped there to a Russian boat and sailed for Ekaterina, the first port in Russia in the North, the new Russian harbour which never freezes. From Ekaterina I went on to Archangel, where I stayed a week, and from Archangel went to Moscow. I visited some estates in Central Russia and stayed with various acquaintances and friends, visited Rostof-on-the-Don, the Caucasus, Orel, Petrograd, and finally came back to England on a returning ammunition ship. In going to Russia I certainly did not intend to publish my impressions in book form, but I have been asked to do so, and I recognise the value of keeping in contact with our Ally from day to day. The requirement of the moment seems to be not so much books on Russia, of which there are now a great many, but diaries or volumes of impressions, keeping the peoples of the two countries in touch during the war. I returned to London at the beginning of October, 1916, and I should be glad to think that some one returning at the beginning of January, 1917, would follow on with another small volume of this type. Again for April, 1917. We need such volumes of personal impressions, and there would not be the need to apologise for them. They are letters between friends both engaged in the same vital task. It is extremely difficult to keep in touch with Russia by reading newspapers only. The newspapers are, on the whole, difficult to follow. They are concerned with the news-aspect of events and the scope for sensational appeals. Good quiet correspondence tends to be lost in them. Hence my little book of the hour. I was in Russia when the war broke out in 1914. I spent 1915 in Egypt, the Balkans, Russia and England, and again I spent the summer of 1916 in Russia. I have, therefore, been in touch with the Russians all the time of the war. I hope, therefore, that in this time when deeds rather than words are necessary, my report of the conditions prevailing in the land of our ally Russia may be considered serviceable Stephen Graham. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Firebrands The Untold Story of Four Women Who Made and Unmade Prohibition【電子書籍】[ Gioia Diliberto ]

Guaranteed to change how you picture Prohibition, this lively history turns the spotlight on four women in the immediate aftermath of winning the vote who played influential roles on all sides of the Eighteenth and Twenty-First Amendments.

In the popular imagination, the story of Prohibition in America is a story of men and male violence, one full of federal agents fighting gangsters over the sale of moonshine. In contrast, Firebrands is the story of four Jazz Age dynamosーall women ?who were forces behind the passage, the enforcement, the defiance, and, ultimately, the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. They battled each other directly, and they learned to marshal clout with cowed and hypocritical legislators, almost all of them men. Their clash over Prohibition stands as the first significant exercise of women’s political power since women gained the right to vote, and their influence on the American political scene wouldn’t be equaled for decades.

In Gioia Diliberto’s fresh and timely take on this period of history, we meet Ella Boole, the stern and ambitious leader of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, who campaigned fiercely to introduce Prohibition and fought desperately to keep it alive. We also meet Mabel Walker Willebrandt, the most powerful woman in America at the time, who served as the top federal prosecutor charged with enforcing Prohibition. Diliberto tells the story, too, of silent film star Texas Guinan, who ran New York speakeasies backed by the mob and showed that Prohibition was not only absurd but unenforceable. And, she follows Pauline Morton Sabin, a glamorous Manhattan aristocrat who belatedly recognized the cascading evil in Prohibition and mobilized the movement to kill it.

These women led their opposing forces of “Wets” and “Drys” across a teeming landscape of bootleggers, gangsters, federal agents, temperance fanatics, and cowardly politicians, many of them secret drunks. Building on the momentum of suffrage, they forged a path for the activists who followed during the great civil rights battles of the mid-twentieth century. Yet, they have been largely lost to history. In Firebrands, Diliberto finally gives these dynamic figures their due, creating a varied and dramatic portrait of women wielding power, in politics, society, and popular culture.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Beyond Constraint Middle/Passages of Blackness and Indigeneity in the Radical Tradition【電子書籍】[ Shona N. Jackson ]

In Beyond Constraint, Shona N. Jackson offers a new approach to labour and its analysis by demonstrating the fundamental relation between black and Indigenous People’s sovereign, free, and coerced labour in the Americas. Through the writings of Cedric Robinson, Walter Rodney, C. L. R. James, and Sylvia Wynter, Jackson confronts the elision of Indigenous People’s labour in the black radical tradition. She argues that this elision is an effect of the structural relation of antiblackness to anti-indigeneity through which native and black bodies are arranged on either side of a split between unproductive labour and productive work necessary for capital accumulation and for how we read capital in political economic critique. This division between labour and work forces the radical tradition to sustain the break between black and Indigenous peoples as part of its critical strategies of liberation. To address this impasse, Jackson reads the tradition against the grain for openings to indigeneity and a method for recovering lost labours.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Ashes of Verses: Poems Burned but Not Forgotten【電子書籍】[ Alex Telman ]

This collection, Ashes of Verses: Poems Burned but Not Forgotten, spans three decades of my life, from 1976 to 2006. Each poem is a reflection of the times, places, and emotional landscapes I found myself navigating during those years. These poemsーonce held closely, now released into the worldーtouch on love, faith, loss, and the search for meaning.

Titles like My Father's Voiceless Gesture and The Twin Towers of Love hold personal memories, while poems such as The Life and Death of Jesus and The Pendulum of Christ delve into spiritual exploration. When I Die and Our Final Sunset are meditations on mortality, the fragility of life, and the inevitable passage of time. Others, like Toy Wonderland and A Leaf in Winter ? Part 1, reach for simplicity and innocence, contrasting with the more complex reflections in Writing is a Sentence or Reading Dead Poets.

Though some of these poems may feel like fragments of the past, I hope the fire that once inspired them continues to burn within each reader. This collection signifies both a closing and an opening- a burning away of old works to make space for new ones, yet leaving behind the embers of these verses for reflection.

Whether you find yourself caught in the city streets of Fog in the City of Lights or lost in the philosophical musings of Nothing ? The Perfect Poem, I hope these works ignite a sense of connection, thought, and perhaps even renewal.

As the title suggests, though these words are metaphorically burned, their essence remains eternal- alive in the minds of those who read them.

-Alex
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A revelatory narrative of the intersecting lives and works of four revered authors during 1922, the birth year of modernism.

A Lambda Literary Awards Finalist

Named a Best Book by NPR's Book Concierge

The World Broke in Two tells the fascinating story of the intellectual and personal journeys four legendary writersーVirginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, and D. H. Lawrenceーmake over the course of one pivotal year. As 1922 begins, all four are literally at a loss for words, confronting an uncertain creative future despite success in the past. The literary ground is shifting, as Ulysses is published in February and Proust's In Search of Lost Time begins to be published in England in the autumn. Yet, dismal as their prospects seemed in January, by the end of the year Woolf has started Mrs. Dalloway, Forster has, for the first time in nearly a decade, returned to work on the novel that will become A Passage to India, Lawrence has written Kangaroo, his unjustly neglected and most autobiographical novel, and Eliot has finishedーand published to acclaimー"The Waste Land."

As Willa Cather put it, "The world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts," and what these writers were struggling with that year was in fact the invention of modernism. Based on original research, Bill Goldstein's The World Broke in Two captures both the literary breakthroughs and the intense personal dramas of these beloved writers as they strive for greatness.

"Entertaining. . . .
This "expert piece of journalism by a brave man about brave men" follows three soldiers and a reporter through eighteen months on Ward 57, Walter Reed's amputee wing ( The Washington Post)
Time magazine's Michael Weisskopf was riding through Baghdad in the back of a U.S. Army Humvee when he heard a metallic thunk. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The REAL College Survival Guide【電子書籍】[ Kevin Lawson ]

Remember taking a College Orientation class as soon as the tuition money cleared? Remember how many important rites of passage it didn't cover? Humorist Kevin Lawson sure does, and, as expected, he's brought his charmingly snarky observations to the table. "The REAL College Survival Guide" is part reference book, part satirical reflection, and all about secondary education.

Dorm Resident Advisor: Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!

You know, when I signed up to be a resident advisor, I thought I was stepping into a role that would be a mix of mentorship, community building, and maybe a little bit of chaos. What I didn't expect was to become a glorified babysitter for a bunch of 18-year-olds who think they're invincible. I mean, I'm pretty sure I've seen more questionable life choices in a single semester than I did in my entire high school career.

Let's start with the first week of the semester. I'm all excited, ready to welcome my residents with open arms and a well-rehearsed speech about community and support. I'm thinking, "This is going to be great! I'm going to help these kids find themselves!" But then, I walk into the common room, and what do I find? A group of freshmen trying to microwave an entire bag of popcorn without taking it out of the plastic. I'm standing there, watching them, and I can't help but think, "This is the future of our society?"

And then there's the noise. Oh, the noise. You'd think I was living in a concert hall. I mean, I get it; it's college, and you want to have fun. But when your idea of fun is blasting music at 2 a.m. while I'm trying to have a heart-to-heart with my pillow, we have a problem. I once had to knock on a door at 3 a.m. because someone thought it would be a good idea to host a karaoke night. Spoiler alert: they couldn't sing. I'm pretty sure I lost a few brain cells that night, and I'm still waiting for them to come back.

And let's not forget about the "emergencies." I've had residents come to me with issues ranging from "I lost my phone" to "I think my roommate is a vampire." Yes, a vampire. Apparently, the roommate was just really into goth fashion and had a penchant for staying up all night. But hey, who am I to judge? I mean, I once thought I could pull off a mohawk, so we all have our phases.

Then there's the classic "I can't find my ID" scenario. You'd think these kids were searching for the Holy Grail. I've seen them tear apart their entire rooms, throw clothes everywhere, and even check the fridgeーbecause, you know, maybe it was hiding next to the leftover pizza. And when they finally find it, it's always in the last place they look. I mean, of course it is! It's like they think the ID is playing hide and seek.

And let's talk about the "community events" I'm supposed to organize. I had this brilliant idea to host a game night. I thought, "What could go wrong?" Well, let me tell you, when you mix competitive spirits with a group of college students and a game of Monopoly, you're basically setting the stage for World War III. I had to mediate a fight over who was stealing whose properties, and by the end of the night, I was just as exhausted as if I'd run a marathon.

So, here I am, a resident advisor, navigating the wild world of college life. I've learned to embrace the chaos, laugh at the absurdity, and remind myself that one day, these kids will look back and realize that maybe, just maybe, they weren't as invincible as they thought. And who knows? Maybe one day, they'll be the ones telling stories about their time in the dorms, and I'll be the punchline.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

There, they encounter the Lost Boys, mermaids, and the nefarious Captain Hook and his band of pirates. Adventures abound, from battling pirates to exploring mysterious lagoons. Desperate to return home, she journeys to the Emerald City to seek the aid of the Wizard. Along the way, she befriends the Scarecrow seeking brains, the Tin Woodman desiring a heart, and the Cowardly Lion in search of courage. Together, they face various trials, from battling malevolent witches to navigating treacherous landscapes. Their quest becomes a journey of self-discovery, revealing that what they sought was within them all along. The story intertwines adventure with lessons on friendship, bravery, and self-belief.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Complete by Mark Twain
Tom Sawyer, a mischievous and imaginative boy living along the Mississippi River, continually seeks adventure and escape from the mundanity of small-town life. From persuading friends to whitewash a fence to witnessing a graveyard murder with his friend Huck Finn, Tom's escapades are both lighthearted and perilous. His infatuation with Becky Thatcher leads to both romantic gestures and juvenile misunderstandings. The climax sees Tom and Becky lost in a cave, confronting real danger. Through Tom's eyes, the novel captures the spirit of childhood, the allure of freedom, and the moral lessons that come with growing up.

Frankenstein; Or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Victor Frankenstein, a passionate young scientist, becomes obsessed with unraveling the secrets of life and death. Through unorthodox experiments, he succeeds in animating a being crafted from reclaimed body parts. However, horrified by his creation's grotesque appearance, Victor abandons the creature, leading it to experience rejection and isolation. Yearning for companionship but met with fear and hostility, the creature's loneliness turns to vengeance against its creator. The ensuing cat-and-mouse chase delves deep into themes of ambition, responsibility, and the consequences of playing god. The novel serves as a cautionary tale about unchecked ambition and the ethical boundaries of science.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Dorian Gray, a young man of extraordinary beauty, becomes the muse of painter Basil Hallward. Influenced by the hedonistic Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian wishes that his portrait would bear the marks of age and sin, allowing him eternal youth. This wish mysteriously comes true, leading Dorian down a path of indulgence, moral corruption, and decadence, all while his visage remains untouched. Meanwhile, the portrait hidden away reflects the degradation of his soul. As years pass, the weight of his actions and the grotesque transformation of the painting haunt him. The narrative delves into themes of vanity, morality, and the duality of human nature.

A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle
Dr. John Watson, recently returned from the Afghan War, seeks lodging in London and is introduced to the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes. Soon, they are drawn into a perplexing murder case: a man found dead in an abandoned house with no apparent wounds, but with the word "RACHE" scrawled on the wall. As Holmes employs his deductive prowess, the narrative shifts to the American West, revealing a backstory of love, betrayal, and vengeance rooted in the Mormon community. The novel intricately weaves these disparate threads, culminating in the unmasking of the perpetrator. This debut of Holmes and Watson sets the stage for their enduring partnership.

Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
In the quaint English town of Cranford, the social fabric is predominantly woven by the genteel but modestly situated women. Through a series of vignettes, the novel portrays their daily lives, marked by tea parties, fashion, and the subtle etiquettes of Victorian society. The arrival of outsiders and unexpected events challenge their established norms, leading to both comedic and poignant moments. Amidst the simplicity, themes of resilience, compassion, and the strength of community emerge. The narrative offers a charming glimpse into the rhythms of small-town life and the enduring bonds of friendship.

Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Presented as a confessional monologue, the narrative delves into the mind of an unnamed, introspective man living in St. Petersburg. Disillusioned with society and consumed by spite, he grapples with feelings of inferiority and existential angst. His musings challenge the notions of rationality, free will, and the human propensity for self-destruction. The second part recounts episodes from his past, highlighting his attempts to interact with others, which often culminate in humiliation and self-sabotage. Through this introspection, Dostoyevsky examines the complexities of the human psyche and the contradictions inherent in human nature.

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Set in the city of Verona, two young lovers from feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets, fall deeply in love at first sight.
