The Slipthk War: Pleroma The Slipthk War【電子書籍】[ D?v?n ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Slipthk War: Pleroma The Slipthk War【電子書籍】[ D?v?n ]

The war has become more than war.

It is no longer a clash of forcesーbut a collision of truths, a convergence of archetypes, a reawakening of memories buried beneath the bones of time. The cataclysm unleashed by the Ash'Ara has peeled back the final veil, revealing what has always lingered behind the dream of existence: the Pleroma.

Here, at the threshold of form and formlessness, the illusion of separation begins to dissolve.

Elo-D?v?nーonce merely D?v?n, now fused with Elo-Ravin, the divine spark of remembrance, and Naviel, the echo of cosmic thoughtーhas become the axis of a deeper unraveling. His body, mind, and soul are no longer distinct. He is dreamt by the cosmos even as he dreams it. Every step he takes echoes across the lattice of being, stirring gods, guardians, and forgotten sentience from their long silence.

The companions that journey with him are no longer what they were.

Alind, bearer of compassion and conduit of grace, now resonates with the pulse of the Pleroma, her presence bending reality to the shape of empathy.

Divinity, the formless, who was once a whisper, has become a force of harmonic disruptionーa daughter of the void who sings to awaken truth from its prison of certainty.

E?χa, cloaked in paradox, holds the mirror to all things and reveals the nature of choice through her very breath.

Even the once-exiled ?????ーthe fallen sentinel of the Eastーmust confront the core of his undoing as the ancient Elders reemerge to reclaim dominion over what was never theirs to begin with.

Together, they pass through realms of myth and memory, across the Threshold of the Echoed Self, through the Spheres of the Forgotten Ones, and into the Chamber of Infinite Conjunctions, where identity is not static but fluidーtranscendent, recursive, and always in the act of becoming.

But not all forces wish for healing.

Beneath the shimmering membrane of the Pleroma stirs Ravhel-Suun, the great betrayer, the wound given voice. He is not merely an antagonist, but a living symptom of the cosmic splitーthe dissonance between knowing and being. He seeks not destruction, but correction. Not vengeance, but integration on his terms. His design is not chaos, but symmetry. Perfect, soulless, silent.

As the group reaches the Heart of the Pleroma, they are each shown what was lost: their true names, their divine echoes, the original threads that once wove them into the great harmonic whole. It is there they confront the being older than Sophia, bearing both the fracture and the seed. And it is there that the first breath ever spoken speaks again.

What is the Slipthk but the consequence of forgetting?

What is the war but a plea for remembrance?

In the final arc of this installment, reality itself bends under the weight of their choices. The fabric of time strains as timelines collapse, reweave, and echo into eternity. And from the soul of Ravhel-Suun, a hidden corridor opensーThe Wound, a living passage through the very origin of division.

To pass through is to lose everything. To remember what lies beyond is to die and become something entirely new.

The Slipthk War: Pleroma is not a continuationーit is an ascension. A metaphysical climax of symbol, silence, and soul. It invites the reader into a realm where philosophy becomes flesh, where myth births consequence, and where the truest battle is fought not between good and evil, but between dissonance and harmony, between forgetting and remembering, between exile… and return.

This is where the gods bleed.

Where the self shatters.

Where the truth is whole, and the whole is broken.

And from that brokenness, a new dawn waits to be born.

"Accelerating the Clock" is a poignant exploration of love and loss, told through the symbolism of clocks and the relentless march of time. It follows Noah and Emilia, whose relationship gradually unravels as they become prisoners of their perceptions of time slipping away. From hopeful beginnings, they drift into silence, broken gears, and frozen moments, ultimately accepting that some love cannot be rewound. Their actionsーsilent gestures, futile repairs, and silent goodbyesーhighlight the inevitable decay of what once was. As their internal clocks stop ticking, they retreat into solitude, haunted by memories and the weight of lost moments. The story culminates in a bleak acknowledgment: some clocks are meant to be stopped forever, and some love stories are destined to fade into silence, leaving behind only the echoes of what once was. A haunting meditation on the passage of time, regret, and the impossibility of reclaiming what has slipped beyond reach.

The resurfacing of characters from Olga's past in her new city speaks to the theme of immigration in the novel, of new homes and the passage from old to new--a passage that is perhaps not ever fully complete in the sense that the past cannot be shaken." --Marta Balcewicz, PloughsharesIn Yelena Moskovich's spellbinding new novel, A Door Behind A Door, we meet Olga, who immigrates as part of the Soviet diaspora of '91 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There she grows up and meets a girl and falls in love, beginning to believe that she can settle down. But a phone call from a bad man from her past brings to life a haunted childhood in an apartment building in the Soviet Union: an unexplained murder in her block, a supernatural stray dog, and the mystery of her beloved brother Moshe, who lost an eye and later vanished. We get pulled into Olga's past as she puzzles her way through an underground Midwestern Russian mafia, in pursuit of a string of mathematical stabbings.

In J. L. Carr's deeply charged poetic novel, Tom Birkin, a veteran of the Great War and a broken marriage, arrives in the remote Yorkshire village of Oxgodby where he is to restore a recently discovered medieval mural in the local church. Living in the bell tower, surrounded by the resplendent countryside of high summer, and laboring each day to uncover an anonymous painter's depiction of the apocalypse, Birkin finds that he himself has been restored to a new, and hopeful, attachment to life. But summer ends, and with the work done, Birkin must leave. Now, long after, as he reflects on the passage of time and the power of art, he finds in his memories some consolation for all that has been lost.

The Captive【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

The Captive, the fifth volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work In Search of Lost Time, is a profound exploration of love, obsession, and the psychological intricacies of desire. The novel follows the narrator's relationship with Albertine, whom he keeps confined in his Paris apartment in a desperate attempt to possess and control her. Through this dynamic, Proust delves into the themes of jealousy, memory, and the illusions that shape emotional attachment.

Published posthumously, The Captive is marked by its introspective depth and lyrical prose, continuing Proust's investigation into the workings of consciousness and the passage of time. The novel reflects the narrator's inner turmoil, as he oscillates between affection and suspicion, revealing how love can become entangled with fear and domination.

The enduring significance of The Captive lies in its unflinching portrayal of the fragility of human relationships and the limitations of understanding another person's inner world.

Time Regained, the final volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work In Search of Lost Time, serves as both a culmination and a revelation. In this last installment, Proust's narrator confronts the passage of time, the frailty of memory, and the possibility of artistic redemption. Through a return to familiar places and faces now transformed by age and war, he discovers that time, once perceived as a source of loss, can also be the wellspring of meaning and artistic creation.

The novel deepens Proust's exploration of involuntary memory, most famously illustrated through sensory experiences that awaken buried impressions of the past. These moments reveal a hidden continuity beneath the apparent fragmentation of life. As the narrator comes to understand his vocation as a writer, Time Regained becomes a profound meditation on the role of art in transcending time and restoring coherence to lived experience.

The enduring significance of Time Regained lies in its philosophical depth and literary innovation. It closes the narrative with the insight that true understanding is not found in escaping time but in embracing it ー recognizing the patterns that link past, present, and future. In doing so, Proust affirms that through memory and art, the ephemeral can become eternal.

Unearthed in a clear-out, a picture calendar she’s kept
? hoarding, I’ve learnt, is a mark of the emigrant ?
across continents and time.

So begins Sarah Howe’s extraordinary new collection, returning to the riddle of belonging she explored in her award-winning debut, Loop of Jade. At the heart is her own mother’s clouded past: abandoned as a baby and taken in, at the turbulent dawn of Communist China, by a woman with her own hidden motives. Now a mother herself, Howe finds herself re-examining this unreliable narrative with fresh sight. Sifting through her own history, the poet asks, how can a new generation transform a shattered inheritance? And what is lost and gained in the pursuit?

What unfolds is a personal Babel of voices and identities, and an examination of the contradictory legacies of colonialism, where poems ? past and present ? act as ‘foretokens’, omens of what lies ahead. A central spine of poems takes the molecular structure of DNA as its template: a ‘ladder of atoms beginning to twist’, down which the poet steps into the darkness of time. Objects of witness resurface to tell their own stories: fragile porcelains of past centuries transiting across continents; a picture calendar of old postcards from another world.

‘From the other side of ruin / we found safe passage’, Howe writes in these spectacular poems of emotional heft and quickening wit, their voice salvaged from the fragments of a former self. Foretokens is a monumental work of survival and creation, turning over what is left behind as it strikes out towards astonishing new vistas.

Broken Road: From the Iron Gates to Mount Athos著者: Patrick Leigh Fermor出版社: NYRB Classics出版日: 2015年01月20日新しい本新古品・未使用品。 Patrick Leigh Fermor recounts the last leg of his epic walk across Europe as he makes his way through Bulgaria, Romania, and finally Greece. In the winter of 1933, eighteen-year-old Patrick ("Paddy") Leigh Fermor set out on a walk across Europe, starting in Holland and ending in Constantinople. Decades later, Leigh Fermor told the story of that life-changing journey in A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water, works now celebrated as among the most vivid, absorbing, and beautifully written travel books of all time. The Broken Road is the account of the final leg of his journey, catching up with Paddy in the fall of 1934, following him through Bulgaria and Romania and ending in Greece. Days and nights on the road, spectacular landscapes and uncanny cities, friendships lost and found, leading the high life in Bucharest or camping out with fishermen and shepherds--such incidents and escapades are described with all the linguistic bravura and astonishing learning that Leigh Fermor is famous for, but also with a melancholy awareness of the passage of time. Throughout it we can hear the still-ringing voice of an irrepressible young man embarking on a life of adventure.

In "Memories In An Empty Gaze", time and identity blur, merging into a space where the shadows of what has been lived intertwine with the traces of what remains to be discovered. This book is an introspective journey, a passage through memories that, like echoes of a distant past, resonate in the mind but never become entirely clear. They are fragmented recollections, absent faces, and places that, though familiar, seem to drift into the fog of oblivion.

The empty gaze is not just a metaphor but a gateway to the incompleteness of human experience. It is the gaze that observes without seeing, that searches for meaning amid confusion, that finds answers in the void.

This book is not merely a narration of memories but a reflection on how human beings confront the emptiness that surrounds them: the emptiness of broken relationships, of moments that fade away, of lost identities. "Memories In An Empty Gaze" seeks to uncover what lies beyond what is no longer there, to find meaning in what dissolves, and perhaps to accept that, in absence, truth may also be found.

The End of the River【電子書籍】[ Simon Winchester ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The End of the River【電子書籍】[ Simon Winchester ]

When it comes to climate-change-inspired threats, it is rising sea levels we hear most about. But if the oceans are, as Herman Melville put it, “the tide-beating heart of the earth,” rivers are its circulatory system. In the United States, there is no river more storied, symbolic, and vital than the Mississippi, and none, to use Mark Twain’s word, more lawless. The struggle to control it has been going on nearly as long as there has been human civilization on its banks, and the attendant drama and dangers have been memorialized by many writers, among them Twain and, in his seminal 1987 New Yorker account, John McPhee. Now Simon Winchester, the consummate, critically acclaimed storyteller and bestselling author of Atlantic and The Professor and the Madman, turns his eye to what could well be the height of the battle, one increasingly doomed by man’s interference.

The most fateful instance of this interference was accomplished by an inventor and steamboat captain, Henry Miller Shreve, in the nineteenth century. In vivid detail, Winchester re-creates the smashing and digging and the great man- and steam power that Shreve wielded to clear the river of snags and logjams and, in order to shorten the passage to New Orleans, carve an entirely new channel for it. What no one foresaw was that his celebrated shortcut, Shreve’s Cut, would form a sloping chute to an adjacent river, the Atchafalaya, and, aided by gravity and shifting weather patterns, increasingly tempt the waters of the Mississippi in its direction. Resisting this trend with ever more ingenious methods (and ever more expense) began just after, first with a system of levees, then with added spillways, and, finally, with the conception and construction of a floodgate system, the Old River Control Structure, still in place today. And the stakes are high: Ifーmany say whenーthe Atchafalaya captures the Mississippi’s stream, it will be the end of life as it’s currently known in the American South. The great cities of LouisianaーNew Orleans and Baton Rougeーwould be rendered fetid swamps; entire sections of the American infrastructure, from pipelines to electricity and water supply, would collapse. Homes would be displaced and livelihoods, if not lives, would be lost.

Deftly combining the hydrological and the historical, Winchester tours the challenges that upped the ante on the Mississippi River Commission’s duty to protect the watershed and its inhabitants: the upheavals that came in the form of the Great Flood of 1927, one of the most destructive natural disasters of all time, displacing more people than almost any event in American history, and the record-breaking inundations of 1937 and 1973. He pays tribute to the Army Corps of Engineers, for their Herculean efforts to keep the river on its current track, and to one civilian, Albert Einstein’s son Hans Albert Einstein, a hydraulic engineer and one of the main architects of the mighty control structure that continues to divide the Mississippi from the Atchafalaya. But how long can it hold in a time when extremes of weather are the norm, when storms come faster and more furiously, sending sediment-loaded water pounding against the floodgatesーevents that not only pit man against nature but, given that we cannot always agree which causes and correctives to pursue, man against man?

In this elegant synthesis of past and present, the exigencies of the natural world and the human, Winchester offers an engrossing cautionary tale that readers cannot afford to ignore. It is a call to arms that asks whether accepting defeatーletting nature take its courseーmay be the only way to win.

Nostalgia in the Early Modern World Memory, Temporality, and Emotion【電子書籍】[ Hannah Skoda ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Nostalgia in the Early Modern World Memory, Temporality, and Emotion【電子書籍】[ Hannah Skoda ]

How can the concept of nostalgia illuminate the culturally specific ways in which societies understand the contested relationship between the past, present, and future?

The word nostalgia was invented in the late seventeenth century to describe the debilitating effects of homesickness. Now widely defined as a sense of longing for a lost past, initially it was more closely linked with dislocation in space. By exploring some of its many textual, visual and musical manifestations in the tumultuous period between c. 1350 and 1800, this volume resists the assumption that nostalgia is a distinctive by-product of modernity. It also forges a fruitful link between three lively areas of current scholarly enquiry: memory, temporality, and emotion.

The contributors deploy nostalgia as a tool for investigating perceptions of the passage of time and historical change, unsettling experiences of migration and geographical displacement, and the connections between remembering and forgetting, affect and imagination. Ranging across Europe and the Atlantic world, they examine the moments, sites and communities in which it arose, alongside how it was used to express both criticism and regret about the religious, political, social and cultural upheavals that shaped the early modern world. They approach it as a complex mixed feeling that opens a new window into individual subjectivities and collective mentalities.

Strong Inside Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South【電子書籍】[ Andrew Maraniss ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Strong Inside Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South【電子書籍】[ Andrew Maraniss ]

New York Times Best Seller
2015 RFK Book Awards Special Recognition
2015 Lillian Smith Book Award
2015 AAUP Books Committee "Outstanding" Title

Based on more than eighty interviews, this fast-paced, richly detailed biography of Perry Wallace, the first African American basketball player in the SEC, digs deep beneath the surface to reveal a more complicated and profound story of sports pioneering than we've come to expect from the genre. Perry Wallace's unusually insightful and honest introspection reveals his inner thoughts throughout his journey.

Wallace entered kindergarten the year that Brown v. Board of Education upended "separate but equal." As a 12-year-old, he sneaked downtown to watch the sit-ins at Nashville's lunch counters. A week after Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Wallace entered high school, and later saw the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. On March 16, 1966, his Pearl High School basketball team won Tennessee's first integrated state tournament--the same day Adolph Rupp's all-white Kentucky Wildcats lost to the all-black Texas Western Miners in an iconic NCAA title game.

The world seemed to be opening up at just the right time, and when Vanderbilt recruited him, Wallace courageously accepted the assignment to desegregate the SEC. His experiences on campus and in the hostile gymnasiums of the Deep South turned out to be nothing like he ever imagined.

On campus, he encountered the leading civil rights figures of the day, including Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, and Robert Kennedy--and he led Vanderbilt's small group of black students to a meeting with the university chancellor to push for better treatment.

On the basketball court, he experienced an Ole Miss boycott and the rabid hate of the Mississippi State fans in Starkville. Following his freshman year, the NCAA instituted "the Lew Alcindor rule," which deprived Wallace of his signature move, the slam dunk.

Despite this attempt to limit the influence of a rising tide of black stars, the final basket of Wallace's college career was a cathartic and defiant dunk, and the story Wallace told to the Vanderbilt Human Relations Committee and later The Tennessean was not the simple story of a triumphant trailblazer that many people wanted to hear. Yes, he had gone from hearing racial epithets when he appeared in his dormitory to being voted as the university's most popular student, but, at the risk of being labeled "ungrateful," he spoke truth to power in describing the daily slights and abuses he had overcome and what Martin Luther King had called "the agonizing loneliness of a pioneer."

Crossing Broadway Washington Heights and the Promise of New York City【電子書籍】[ Robert W. Snyder ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Crossing Broadway Washington Heights and the Promise of New York City【電子書籍】[ Robert W. Snyder ]

Robert W. Snyder's Crossing Broadway tells how disparate groups overcame their mutual suspicions to rehabilitate housing, build new schools, restore parks, and work with the police to bring safety to streets racked by crime and fear. It shows how a neighborhood once nicknamed "Frankfurt on the Hudson" for its large population of German Jews became "Quisqueya Heights"ーthe home of the nation's largest Dominican community.

The story of Washington Heights illuminates New York City's long passage from the Great Depression and World War II through the urban crisis to the globalization and economic inequality of the twenty-first century. Washington Heights residents played crucial roles in saving their neighborhood, but its future as a home for working-class and middle-class people is by no means assured. The growing gap between rich and poor in contemporary New York puts new pressure on the Heights as more affluent newcomers move into buildings that once sustained generations of wage earners and the owners of small businesses.

Crossing Broadway is based on historical research, reporting, and oral histories. Its narrative is powered by the stories of real people whose lives illuminate what was won and lost in northern Manhattan's journey from the past to the present. A tribute to a great American neighborhood, this book shows how residents learned to cross Broadwayーover the decades a boundary that has separated black and white, Jews and Irish, Dominican-born and American-bornーand make common cause in pursuit of one of the most precious rights: the right to make a home and build a better life in New York City.

In poems of quiet force, Geri Doran maps the fragility of human connection and the irreducible fact of grief. From the communal ruptures of Chechnya and Rwanda to the personal dislocations that attend great loss, Resin weighs frailty against responsibility, damage against the desires of the heart. For the poet, a factory fire in late-nineteenth-century Portland becomes a tool for precise knowing: "The phases of wood are a means / of dead reckoning: burn what is built / and gauge your passage / by what is lost." Even in so quotidian an act as the planting of potatoes, Doran's sure, meticulous, and carefully calibrated lines reveal the intensity of our yearnings: "What carried us from year to year was yield: / potatoes in, potatoes out, like rowing." Variously plaintive, passionate, intuitive, and serious, the voice in Resin tells how the natural world, in both its wildness and regularity, expresses and mediates human longing. You entered me like migraine, left
like migraine a private vacancy.
The darkness outside is great and wild.
Blue plums falling from an old tree
demand we believe in wildness,
fallingness. What's the matter is memory,
shrivel and tart. How in this sweet
aftermath of everything the mind
should settle on plums (blue plums!)
is one of the mysteries. That God
and my window-blinds should conspire
to refract the light to look like plums.
Out in the wild nothing.
-- from "Blue Plums"

The Motherless Child in the Novels of Pauline Hopkins【電子書籍】[ Jill Bergman ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Motherless Child in the Novels of Pauline Hopkins【電子書籍】[ Jill Bergman ]

Well known in her day as a singer, playwright, author, and editor of the Colored American Magazine, Pauline Hopkins (1859--1930) has been the subject of considerable scholarly attention over the last twenty years. Academic review of her many accomplishments, however, largely overlooks Hopkins's contributions as novelist. The Motherless Child in the Novels of Pauline Hopkins, the first book-length study of Hopkins's major fiction, fills this gap, offering a sustained analysis of motherlessness in Contending Forces, Hagar's Daughter, Winona, and Of One Blood.
Motherlessness appears in all of Hopkins's novels. The motif, Jill Bergman asserts, resonated profoundly for African Americans living with the legacy of abduction from a motherland and familial fragmentation under slavery. In her novels, motherlessness serves as a trope for the national alienation of post-Reconstruction African Americans. The longing and search for a maternal figure, then, represents an effort to reconnect with the absent mother -- a missing parent and a lost African history and heritage. In Hopkins's oeuvre, the image of the mother of African heritage -- a source of both identity and persecution -- becomes a source of power and possibility.
Bergman shows how historical events -- such as Bleeding Kansas, the execution of John Brown, and the Middle Passage -- gave rise to a sense of motherlessness and how Hopkins's work engages with that of other contemporaneous race activists. This illuminating study opens new terrain not only in Hopkins scholarship, but also in the complex interchanges between literary, African American, psychoanalytic, feminist, and postcolonial studies.

Simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming, The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World is the signpost pointing to the healing that can come after. When Yui loses both her mother and her daughter in the tsunami, she begins to mark the passage of time from that date onward: Everything is relative to March 11, 2011, the day the tsunami tore Japan apart and when grief took hold of her life. Raphael is a would-be author, but there have been so many distractions to the novel he has been writing for forty-one years that many of the characters have lost patience and gone off to do their own thing...but somehow, miraculously, the novel seems to write itself. The Frequency of Magic traverses an array of lives connected to the village of Million Hills. There's the speculative imagination of Luke's travels through mythic landscapes pursued by his nemesis, the carnival figure of the Great Bandit. There's the psychological odysseys of the musician, a jazz saxophonist, and Ella, an actor, both long separated from Million Hills, working their ways across the USA and Europe. When the paths of these exiles cross, a love affair begins. Time in this richly ambitious novel is both circular and simultaneous, but moving, as Raphael ages, towards a sense of dissolution both of persons and of the culture of the village. Above all, there is Raphael's belief that in the making of his fiction, however messy and disobedient its materials, art can both challenge the destructive passage of time and make us see reality afresh.

American Legends The Life of George Washington【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】American Legends The Life of George Washington【電子書籍】

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Every American is taught a pristine narrative of the life and legacy of George Washington and can easily recite the highlights of the “Father of Our Country”. The remarkable Virginian led an under-resourced rag-tag army to ultimate victory in the American Revolution before becoming the nation’s first president, setting it on its path toward superpower status. He may not have actually chopped down a cherry tree or tossed a silver dollar across the Potomac, but his contemporaries considered his character above reproach. When Washington voluntary resigned as commander of the armies, he stunned the world. Everyone in the colonies and the world realized that Washington, at the head of the last army standing in the colonies, could have made himself king of the new United States on the spot, and it would have been a move supported by his rank and file soldiers. Instead, Washington became the first Westerner to voluntarily demobilize his army, ensuring civilian control of the new nation. King George III called Washington "the greatest character of the age" for making that decision.

As President from 1788-1796, Washington set every precedent for the executive branch of the new government, from forming a “Cabinet” to limiting himself to two terms. He even set precedents with his farewell address, which helped guide the policies of subsequent presidents.

Washington did more than any other man to ensure the success of the American Revolution and the safe passage of the new United States from fledgling nation to budding power, but what actually made the man tick? Underneath his steel surface burned an almost insatiable political ambition, and a man who was acutely self-conscious of himself. In addition to highlighting his life and legacy, American Legends: The Life of George Washington humanizes the leader who is now remembered more like a flawless demigod than a man. Along with pictures of the Father of Our Country and other important people and events in his life, you will learn about Washington like you never have before, in no time at all.

Legendary Commanders Who Challenged Ancient Rome The Lives and Legacies of Hannibal, Spartacus, and Attila the Hun【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Legendary Commanders Who Challenged Ancient Rome The Lives and Legacies of Hannibal, Spartacus, and Attila the Hun【電子書籍】

In the history of war, only a select few men always make the list of greatest generals. Napoleon. Caesar. Alexander. They are always joined by Hannibal, who has the distinction of being the only man who nearly brought Rome to its knees before its decline almost 700 years later. Rome never suffered a more horrifying defeat in its history than at Cannae, and indeed, Hannibal nearly rewrote the course of Western history during the Second Punic War. Even today there remains great debate on just how he accomplished his masterful invasion of Italy across the Alps. Since his army included war elephants, historians still argue over exactly where and how he crossed over 2,000 years after he managed that incredible feat.

Hannibal will always be listed among history’s greatest generals, and his military campaign in Italy during the Second Punic War will always be studied, but part of the aura and mystique surrounding the Carthaginian legend is that there is still a lot of mystery. Since Carthage was destroyed by Rome a generation after Hannibal, most of what is known about Hannibal came from the very people he tormented in the late 2nd century B.C., and thus much of his background and life story is unknown. Moreover, while military historians are still amazed that he was able to maintain his army in Italy near Rome for nearly 15 years, scholars are still puzzled over some of his decisions, including why he never attempted to march on Rome in the first place.

Spartacus is the world’s most famous slave, and one of the most notorious figures of Ancient Rome. A slave enamored of freedom and willing to fight and die for it, he became especially popular in the years following the Enlightenment, after which he was widely viewed as a poignant champion of liberty in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, he became a symbol during struggles like the French Revolution, the American Revolution, the American Civil War and the struggle for emancipation.

Today, his dual life as a gladiator and a “freedom fighter” makes him fascinating to audiences around the world. His tale, a blend of violent spectacle and civil rights, has been adapted for film (Stanley Kubrick’s memorable Spartacus), television (Starz’s popular television series), and in literature (appearing in everything from historical novels to comics). To this day, Spartacus (Spartaco) is a popular first name in central and southern Italy, and his name has been adopted by sports teams like FC Spartak Moscow and FC Spartak Plovdiv. The Soviet Union’s internal version of the Olympics, the Spartakiad, also derived its name from Spartacus.

Attila, Emperor of the Hunnic Empire and thus most commonly known as Attila the Hun, is an idiosyncratic figure who has become more myth than man, not least because much of his life is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most famous “barbarian” in history, Attila was the lord of a vast empire spanning two continents, but he is best remembered for what he did not conquer. Though he seemingly had Rome at his mercy in 452, he ultimately decided not to sack the Eternal City, and a year later he had suffered a mysterious death.

What is known about Attila came mostly from Priscus, a guest of his court who wrote several books about Attila’s life in Greek. Unfortunately, much of that work was lost to history, but not before the ancient writer Jordanes relied on it to write his own overexaggerated account of Attila’s life. And like their leader, the Huns themselves are an instantly recognizable name with mysterious origins; most of what is known about the Huns came from Chinese sources thousands of miles and an entire continent away from Italy. Naturally, the dearth of information and the passage of time have allowed myths and legends to fill in the most important details of Attila’s life.
