Given that all political parties today have men in a majority of leadership positions, male gatekeepers play a key part in women's representation. So, how are they responding to the increasing numbers of women who are seeking leadership roles in politics? In ＜em＞The Inclusion Calculation＜/em＞, Melody E. Valdini examines women's inclusion from the perspective of men in power and offers a novel approach to understanding differences in women's descriptive representation. This book argues that men facilitate women's entry into politics when women's presence promises to benefit public perception of a party, and therefore benefit male party leaders. One particularly disturbing implication of this argument is that leaders can increase the number of women in office as a quick and simple substitute for addressing real systemic failures in party organization. Valdini tests her hypotheses by looking at several political contexts around the world: the degree to which parties run more women after a corruption scandal, the number of women who are actually elected at such times, the adoption of gender quotas, and the appointment of women legislators in authoritarian regimes. Her findings suggest that we cannot yet celebrate recent increases in the number of women in office as a sign that we are nearing broad acceptance of gender equality. Further, these findings also suggest that one should question the tendency of scholars and international organizations to use women's presence in office as a measurement of good governance, as well as the tendency to encourage women to simply "lean in" to advance their careers. While it is certainly valuable to encourage women to run for office, it is equally important to understand the motivations of male power-holders. Classical music relaxes me, while rock gives me an outlet whenever I feel angry or out of sorts. However, I noticed that those little twanging sounds from the tuning fork seem to have a calming effect. It goes beyond the usual musical therapy.＜/p＞ ＜p＞So, I conducted some research on the tuning fork. Since I started looking at its benefits, I found out just how good it is for me, my physical health, and my mental well-being. The rhythm that the tuning fork creates produces harmony throughout the body. The more I discovered, the more I was convinced that sound and vibrations create the balance in my mind and body that I was always looking for. It goes beyond just feeling the vibe with music. I entitled the course, “The God of Abraham Praise,” after a hymn by that name written by Thomas Olivers and first published in 1775. As the story goes Olivers was drawn to worship in a London Synagogue one evening and he heard a noted singer Leoni sing an ancient Jewish melody with words attributed to Daniel ben Judah a 15th century Jewish judge in Rome. The text was based on the 13 Creeds of the great sage Maimonides. Olivers paraphrased the text and gave it a distinctive Christian flavor.＜/p＞ ＜p＞In my faith journey I too have been drawn to the synagogue, not literally but figuratively, to understand and appreciate the Jewish origins of the Christian faith. And why not, for Jesus was a devout Jew as were all of his first disciples. I trust the reader will find in this course an orthodox statement of Christian belief. At the same time a reader unfamiliar with the Jewish roots of Christianity may find this presentation of the faith novel. I trust that Jewish readers who bear the faith of Abraham will come to understand Jesus more. This book presents a series of bioarchaeological studies done in collaboration with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band of Mission San Juan Bautista, the state-appointed Most Likely Descendants of the Ohlone people buried in this cemetery, to explore persistence and change in the lives of Native Californians recruited into the Spanish missions during the late 1700s.＜/p＞ ＜p＞This volume presents cutting-edge research techniques used to study the health, diet, social connections, and medicinal practices of these Ohlone individuals. Studies include obsidian and glass bead sourcing, osteological and paleopathological analysis, stable isotope analysis, and proteomic studies of dental calculus.
