【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Between the Guerrillas and the State The Cocalero Movement, Citizenship, and Identity in the Colombian Amazon【電子書籍】[ Mar?a Clemencia Ram?rez ]

Responding to pressure from the United States, the Colombian government in 1996 intensified aerial fumigation of coca plantations in the western Amazon region. This crackdown on illicit drug cultivation sparked an uprising among the region’s cocaleros, small-scale coca producers and harvest workers. More than 200,000 campesinos marched that summer to protest the heightened threat to their livelihoods. Between the Guerrillas and the State is an ethnographic analysis of the cocalero social movement that emerged from the uprising. Mar?a Clemencia Ram?rez focuses on how the movement unfolded in the department (state) of Putumayo, which has long been subject to the de facto rule of guerrilla and paramilitary armies. The national government portrayed the area as uncivilized and disorderly and refused to see the coca growers as anything but criminals. Ram?rez chronicles how the cocaleros demanded that the state recognize campesinos as citizens, provide basic services, and help them to transition from coca growing to legal and sustainable livelihoods.

Frontiers of Development in the Amazon Riches, Risks, and Resistances【電子書籍】[ Gustavo S. Azenha ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Frontiers of Development in the Amazon Riches, Risks, and Resistances【電子書籍】[ Gustavo S. Azenha ]

Frontiers of Development in the Amazon: Riches, Risks, and Resistances contributes to ongoing debates on the processes of change in the Amazon, a region inherently tied to the expansion of internal and external socio-economic and environmental frontiers. This book offers interdisciplinary analyses from a range of scholars in Europe, Latin America, and the United States that question the methods of development and the range of socio-ecological impacts of those methods by examining the theoretical, methodological, and empirical dimensions of frontier-making along with evaluating and refining existing frameworks. Contributors focus on the complex politics of border formation shaped by institutional, economic, and political forces, placing them in relation to ethical, imaginary, and symbolic elements. In doing so, contributors explore the dynamic production of identities, values, and subjectivities, covering matters of migratory patterns, complex power struggles, and intensiveーat times violentーclashes. Among other topics, this book assesses the recent encroachment of export-driven agribusiness into the Amazon Region in the context of recolonization, resource exploitation and multiple programs of modernization and national integration. Scholars of Latin American studies, international development, environmental studies, and applied social sciences will find this book particularly useful.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Oil in the Soil The Politics of Paying to Preserve the Amazon【電子書籍】[ Pamela L. Martin ]

Paradise may have been found in the Western Amazon, but it is on the brink of destruction. Oil in the Soil analyzes the campaign to save the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) block of Yasun? National Park in Ecuador's Amazon and the global networks that have resulted in one of the world's most innovative plans to save the Amazon and other biodiverse places on our planet. Pamela L. Martin examines the path-breaking global environmental governance mechanisms that have resulted from the transnational networks of the Yasun?-ITT campaign and their implications for replication around the world. The analysis of these networks reveals new dynamics of mobilization from the South, which may impact the future of global environmental negotiations. Martin also examines the alternative norms behind the initiative in the words of governmental and non-governmental actors. Such normative changes demonstrate the global struggles of the resource-dependent poor and provide insights toward new pathways of sustainable development for the planet.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Masters of the Lost Land The Untold Story of the Amazon and the Violent Fight for the World's Last Frontier【電子書籍】[ Heriberto Araujo ]

“Gripping. … Araujo’s accretion of detail has a powerful effect, demonstrating how deeply the culture of violence has seeped into the social fabric of Amazonia ー and how hard it will be to eradicate.” ー New York Times Book Review

"A raw account of the critical struggle between law and lawlessness on the world’s last great frontier." ー Christian Science Monitor

In the tradition of Killers of the Flower Moon, a haunting murder mystery revealing the human story behind one of the most devastating crimes of our time: the ruthless destruction of the Amazon rain forestーand anyone who stands in the way

Deep in the heart of the Amazon, the city of Rondon do Par?, Brazil, lived for decades in the shadow of land barons, or fazendeiros*,* who maintained control of the region through unscrupulous land grabs and egregious human rights violations. They razed and burned the jungle, expelled small-scale farmers and Indigenous tribes from their lands, and treated their farmhands as slavesーall with impunity. The only true opposition came from Rondon’s small but robust farmworkers’ union, led by the charismatic Dezinho, who fought to put power back into the hands of the people who called the Amazon home. But when Dezinho was assassinated in cold blood, it seemed the farmworkers’ struggle had come to a violent and fruitless end.

What no one anticipated was that this event would bring forth an unlikely hero: Dezinho’s widow. Against great odds, and at extreme personal risk, Maria Joel, now a single mother of four young children, used her ingenuity and unwavering support from union members to bring her husband’s killer to account in court. Her campaign gained unexpected momentum, helping to bring international attention to the dire situation in Rondon, from Brazil’s president Lula to international celebrities and civil rights groups.

Maria Joel’s fight for justice had far-reaching implications: it unearthed a chilling world of corruption and lawlessness rooted in Brazil’s quest to turn the largest rain forest on earth into an economic frontier. As more details came out, it began to look increasingly likely that Dezinho’s killer, a reluctant and inexperienced gunman, was just one piece of a larger criminal consortium, with ties leading all the way up to one of the region’s most powerful and notorious fazendeiros of all.

Featuring groundbreaking revelations and exclusive interviews, this gripping work of narrative nonfictionis the culmination ofjournalist Heriberto Araujo’s years-long investigation in the heart of the Amazon. Set against the backdrop of appalling deforestation rates and resultant superfires, Masters of the Lost Land vividly reveals the human story behind the loss ofーand fierce crusade to protectーone of our greatest resources in the fight against climate change and one of the last wild places on earth.

Dead in the Water The book that inspired the new major Amazon Prime series【電子書籍】[ Penny Farmer ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Dead in the Water The book that inspired the new major Amazon Prime series【電子書籍】[ Penny Farmer ]

NOW A MAJOR AMAZON PRIME DOCUMENTARY SERIES

'A real-life page turner more intriguing than anything on Netflix..' Matt Nixson, Mail on Sunday

'[A story] almost too mad to make up, too good not to tell.' Ben Dirs, BBC World News

In July 1978, two bodies were discovered in the sea off Guatemala. They were found to be the remains of Chris Farmer and his girlfriend Peta Frampton, two young British graduates. Having been beaten and tortured, then thrown, still alive, into the sea, their bodies had been weighted down and dumped from the yacht on which they had been crewing. For nearly forty years, no one was charged with these brutal murders.

This is the shocking and compelling story of how Chris's sister, Penny, and her family tracked down his and Peta's killer. For decades they painstakingly gathered evidence against Silas Boston, the yacht's American owner, working alongside police in the UK and the USA, as well as the FBI, until he was finally arrested and charged with two counts of murder in 2016. Astonishingly, Penny was able to track down Boston's son, whose bravery in testifying against his own father was the key to bringing down Chris and Peta's killer after so many years.

Dead In The Water is the story of a murder almost unimaginable in its cruelty and one ordinary woman's unwavering determination to find justice for her brother.

Chosen by O, The Oprah magazine, as one of its top twenty best true crime books of all time.

'[A] moving debut... Remaking Indigeneity in the Amazon Christianity, Colonization and the State【電子書籍】[ Esteban Rozo ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Remaking Indigeneity in the Amazon Christianity, Colonization and the State【電子書籍】[ Esteban Rozo ]

Drawing on archival and ethnographic work, this book analyzes how indigeneity, Christianity and state-making became intertwined in the Colombian Amazon throughout the 20th century.

At the end of the 19th century, the state gave Catholic missionaries tutelage over Indigenous groups and their territories, but, in the case of the Colombian Amazon, this tutelage was challenged by evangelical missionaries that arrived in the region in the 1940s with different ideas of civilization and social change. Indigenous conversion to evangelical Christianity caused frictions with other actors, while Indigenous groups perceived conversion as way of leverage with settlers. This book shows how evangelical Christianity shaped new forms of indigeneity that did not coincide entirely with the ideas of civilization or development that Catholic missionaries and the state promoted in the region. Since the 1960s, the state adapted development policies and programs to Indigenous realities and practices, while Indigenous societies appropriated evangelical Christianity in order to navigate the changes brought on by colonization, modernity and state-formation.

This study demonstrates that not all projects of civilization were the same in Amazonia, nor was missionization of Indigenous groups always subordinate to the state or resource extraction.

The Rise and Fall of the Amazon Rubber Industry An Historical Anthropology【電子書籍】[ Stephen Nugent ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Rise and Fall of the Amazon Rubber Industry An Historical Anthropology【電子書籍】[ Stephen Nugent ]

In this engaging book, Stephen Nugent offers an in-depth historical anthropology of a widely recognised feature of the Amazon region, examining the dramatic rise and fall of the rubber industry. He considers rubber in the Amazon from the perspective of a long-term extractive industry that linked remote forest tappers to technical innovations central to the industrial transformation of Europe and North America, emphasizing the links between the social landscape of Amazonia and the global economy. Through a critical examination focused on the rubber industry, Nugent addresses myths that continue to influence perceptions of Amazonia. The book challenges widely held assumptions about the hyper-naturalism of the ‘lost world’ of the Amazon where ‘the challenge of the tropics’ is still to be faced and the ‘frontiers of development’ are still to be settled. It is relevant for students and scholars of anthropology, Latin American studies, history, political ecology, geography and development studies.

Why can’t a Quechua speaker wear pants? Anna M. Babel uses this question to open an analysis of language and social structure at the border of eastern and western, highland and lowland Bolivia. Through an exploration of categories such as political affiliation, ethnic identity, style of dress, and history of migration, she describes the ways that people understand themselves and others as Quechua speakers, Spanish speakers, or something in between.

Between the Andes and the Amazon is ethnography in storytelling form, a rigorous yet sensitive exploration of how people understand themselves and others as members of social groups through the words and languages they use.

Drawing on fifteen years of ethnographic research, Babel offers a close examination of how people produce oppositions, even as they might position themselves “in between” those categories. These oppositions form the raw material of the social system that people accept as “normal” or “the way things are.” Meaning-making happens through language use and language play, Babel explains, and the practice of using Spanish versus Quechua is a claim to an identity or a social position. Babel gives personal perspectives on what it is like to live in this community, focusing on her own experiences and those of her key consultants. Between the Andes and the Amazon opens new ways of thinking about what it means to be a speaker of an indigenous or colonial languageーor a mix of both.

Amazonian Kichwa of the Curaray River Kinship and History in the Western Amazon【電子書籍】[ Mary-Elizabeth Reeve ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Amazonian Kichwa of the Curaray River Kinship and History in the Western Amazon【電子書籍】[ Mary-Elizabeth Reeve ]

Amazonian Kichwa of the Curaray River is an exploration of the dynamics of regional societies and the ways in which kinship relationships define the scale of these societies. It details social relations across Kichwa-speaking indigenous communities and among neighboring members of other ethnolinguistic groups to explore the multiple ways in which the regional society is conceptualized among Amazonian Kichwa.

Drawing on recent studies in kinship, landscape from an indigenous perspective, and social scaling, Mary-Elizabeth Reeve presents a view of Amazonian Kichwa as embedded in a multiethnic regional society of great historic depth. This book is a fine-grained ethnography of the Kichwa of the Curaray River region (Curaray Runa) in which Reeve focuses on ideas of social landscape, as well as residence, extended kin groups, historical memory, and collective ritual celebration, to show the many ways in which Curaray Runa express their placement within a regional society. The final chapter examines social scaling as it is currently unfolding in indigenous societies in Amazonian Ecuador through increasing multisited residence and political mobilization.

Based on intensive fieldwork, Amazonian Kichwa of the Curaray River breaks new ground in Amazonian studies by focusing on extended kinship networks at a larger scale and by utilizing both ethnographic and archival research of Amazonian regional systems.

The Amazon from an International Law Perspective【電子書籍】[ Beatriz Garcia ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Amazon from an International Law Perspective【電子書籍】[ Beatriz Garcia ]

With a vast river network and rainforests extending over eight South American countries, the Amazon plays a vital role particularly in maintaining biodiversity and terrestrial carbon storage. Due to its ecological characteristics, the Amazon benefits not only those countries but also the international community at large. However, the Amazon forests are being rapidly cleared with a consequent loss of biodiversity and impact on global climate. This book examines whether international law has an impact on the preservation of the Amazon by inquiring into the forms of cooperation that exist among the Amazon countries, and between them and the international community, and to what extent international cooperation can help protect the Amazon. Given the role of this region in maintaining the balance of the global environment, the book examines whether the Amazon should be granted a special legal status and possible implications in terms of international cooperation.

Civil Becomings Performative Politics in the Amazon and the Mediterranean【電子書籍】[ Ra?l Acosta ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Civil Becomings Performative Politics in the Amazon and the Mediterranean【電子書籍】[ Ra?l Acosta ]

An anthropological approach to an emerging form of transnational political engagement by independent civil society organizations

Activism and advocacy have drawn academic interest as alternative ways of achieving collective ends outside established political institutions. However, there has been very little theoretical attention aimed at the interconnections between the two spheres. In Civil Becomings: Performative Politics in the Amazon and the Mediterranean, Ra?l Acosta examines the manner in which progressive nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and activists act in a more intermingled and processual way than scholars have previously acknowledged.

Acosta focuses on networks from the vantage point of two NGOs: one in Brazil that concentrated on environmental issues in the Amazon and another in Barcelona called the Mediterranean Social Forum. The focus of this research is not on organizational aspects of collaboration, but rather on the practices and contexts in which such cooperation occurs. Three major aspects of activist and advocacy networks are analyzed: their communicative characters, their collective performances of the political, and the negotiations they engage in between vernacular and cosmopolitan values.

This volume theorizes the cooperative actions of activist and advocacy networks as legitimating processes for the work of participating groups. In doing so, Acosta argues, they address the issues that justify a joint campaign or effort and also crucially underpin each participating collective as a worthy organization of civil society.

Amazon Woman Warriors of Atlantis【電子書籍】[ Dean Clarke ]

The rare exploration about historical references about the Amazons All Woman Warrior systems and the connections to Atlantis in a part of the stories, and myths as being of paramount importance to proving the existence of Atlantis as a civilization not just as a reference about lost lands or islands alone. New discoveries and old discoveries are compared on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific that Amazons were not isolationists but were a very wide migration group as a system. This is one of the rarest written works on this aspect of the subject where Clarke really shows some important chronological and anthropological theories to show that Amazons is a very ancient and not so unique story world wide. Clarke shows that the early discoverers of the America's are not to be blamed directly as having the coined label of Amazons found in the Americas that much earlier existence and observation precluded the colonists own views that got repeated or mixed in to the same native or aboriginal stories of their own cultures who were themselves trying to explain how and why Amazons exist. This is an absolute 'wow' book on a subject rarely addressed by many scholars since it as general subject always fell in a myth category while being taken out of the anthropological contexts as being not the same Amazons or same exact system of cultural groups. Clarke reopens that inquiry while including the mystical references by the Amazons themselves about Atlantis existence when they invaded that lost island under the Atlantic Ocean.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Law, Humans and Plants in the Andes-Amazon The Lawness of Life【電子書籍】[ Iv?n Dar?o Vargas Roncancio ]

Extending law beyond the human, the book probes the conceptual openings, methodological challenges and ethical conundrums of law in a time of deep socio-ecological disturbances and transitions.

How do we learn and practice law across epistemic and ontological difference? What sort of methodologies do we need? In what sense does conjuring other-than-human beings as sentient, cognitive and social agentsー rather than mere recipients of state-sanctioned rightsーtransform what we mean by “law” and “rights of nature”? Legal institutions exclusively focused on human perspectives seem insufficiently capable of addressing current socio-ecological challenges in Latin America and beyond. In response, this book strives to integrate other-than-human beings within legal thinking and decision-making protocols. Weaving together various fields of knowledge and world-making practices that includeーbut are not limited toーIndigenous legal traditions, Earth Law and multispecies ethnography, Law, Humans and Plants focuses on the entanglement of law, ecology and Indigenous cosmologies in Southern Colombia. In so doing, it articulates a general postanthropocentric legal theory which is proposed, a tool to address socioecological challenges such as climate change and bio-cultural loss.

This book will be of interest to scholars and students in the disciplines of environmental law, Earth Law and ecological law, legal theory and critical legal studies as well as others working in the in the fields of Indigenous studies, environmental humanities, legal anthropology and sustainability and climate change justice.

Ayahuasca Reader Encounters with the Amazon's Sacred Vine【電子書籍】[ Luis Eduardo Luna ]

Join dozens of adventurers, anthropologists, artists, shamans, scientists and poets on a journey to remote regions of the Amazon and to the far reaches of the human psyche. The new, expanded edition of Ayahuasca Reader shares many distinct voices of the global ayahuasca movement: researchers conducting clinical studies on its healing effects, painters depicting the ineffable experience with visionary images, indigenous people carrying the wisdom of ancestral traditions, and the stories of how ayahuasca has opened these individuals to their connection with the natural world and their true selves. “Ayahuasca has a very insistent message. It’s one of those universals that almost everyone who drinks the brew sooner or later reports. It’s about the sacred, magical, enchanted, interconnected, infinitely precious nature of life on earth, and the interdependence of material and spiritual realms.” Graham Hancock in Ayahuasca Reader The Ayahuasca Reader is a five-part anthology which shares myths passed down over generations of Amazonian healers, personal testimonies of encounters with Amazonian cultures, a selection of hymns and texts from the religions using ayahuasca as a sacrament, writings from well-known figures in the literary world on the lasting influence of their experience, and a section of transcendental visionary color art to illuminate our understanding of ayahuasca. This comprehensive collection of writings has been expanded and updated, with a new section of ayahuasca inspired art and other resources to draw readers even deeper into the mythic mysteries of the Amazonian brew that has been gaining attention around the world. The texts chosen for this book contain translations from nearly a dozen languages, representing the voices of many different Amazonian peoples and the diversity of their cultural approaches to working with ayahuasca. The contributors also include legendary scholars of Amazonian plant medicine such as Wade Davis, Dennis McKenna, and Richard Spruce; cultural icons like Allen Ginsberg and Alex Grey; and recognized shamans and spiritual leaders such as Raimundo Irineu Serra, Fernando Payaguaje, and Alberto Proha?o.
