Doty was replaced as judge in 1832 and after that stood for election to represent western Michigan Territory as a delegate in Congress. He lost and turned his attention to land speculation, gobbling up thousands of acres in the district.＜/p＞ ＜p＞In 1836 when Wisconsin Territory was created, Doty hoped to be appointed territorial governor but President Andrew Jackson gave the post to Henry Dodge, a longtime political rival of Doty. Unable to lead the new territory, Doty settled on the next best thing - getting the new territorial capital located on his land. He lobbied hard, filling legislators with grand plans of railroads and canals for his city that existed only in a few sketches on paper. It worked. In 1836 an isthmus on the Four Lakes of the Yahar River was declared the permanent capital and named after the fourth President of the United States, James Madison.＜/p＞ ＜p＞James Doty would go on to win the seat in Congress that eluded him and become the second territorial governor. He worked on the Constitutional Convention that resulted in Wisconsin statehood in 1848 and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin's 3rd district. He retired to an island in the Fox River but called back into government service by Abraham Lincoln to govern the Utah Territory where he died in office in 1865.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Meanwhile the town that he had founded, despite grumblings about relocation, made the transition to state capital in 1848 and the University of Wisconsin was established here at the same time. Even so, the thickets on the isthmus remained so dense the village of Madison and its 1,672 residents were classified as an "inhabited forest." But with the reliable economic engines of government and education firmly in place that was not going to be the way of the world for long. The first train arrived in 1854 and the streets were lit with gas a year later. By 1860 the population had climbed over 6,000 and hasn't stopped since.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Madison's growth has not been a boon for lovers of old buildings. There has always been money available to tear down the old and put up the new in the name of progress. Nonetheless there are still heritage buildings from the 19th century in downtown Madison where the explorer is never more than seven blocks from the lake. When word got out about the decision so many land speculators and entrepreneurs - and gamblers and other assorted boomtown ne'er-do-wells - descended on "Crow Creek Crossing" that there was a town of 4,000 people waiting for the railroad when the track reached the settlement in November of 1867. The appearance of a town where the gradual slope of the prairie meets the steepening grades of the Laramie Mountains where none existed mere weeks before earned Cheyenne the sobriquet of "Magic City of the Plains."＜/p＞ ＜p＞When the Wyoming Territory was established less than two years later Cheyenne was the largest town in the new territory and was designated the capital, over the grumblings of other more established towns. When Wyoming became a state in 1890, Cheyenne transitioned to the permanent capital, becoming one of America's least centralized capital cities.＜/p＞ ＜p＞The thing about magic is that it not only makes things appear but disappear as well. And the boom times for the Magic City of the Plains, ushered in by the railroad and vast fortunes made by cattle barons, disappeared and re-appeared with regularity in Cheyenne's early days. The effect of these economic swings is reflected on the face of Cheyenne even today. There remain downtown opulent buildings from the 1880s and the first decades of the 1900s when Cheyenne's location on the Lincoln Highway, America's first transcontinental roadway, revitalized the town. The Lincoln Highway, Route 30, ran right down 16th Street. When the Depression skidded Cheyenne's boom years to a halt in the 1930s few could afford to tear down these historic buildings and replace them with new stock. Often the two-and three-story brick buildings received a modernized facelift instead. As conflict escalated in illinois, Smith had predicted the church would need to go West and be established in the tops of the Rocky Mountains. In 1844 Smith and his brother Hyrum were hauled from a jail by a mob in Carthage, Illinois, where they had surrendered on charges of treason in relation to the destruction of an unfriendly press, and murdered by multiple musket blasts.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Brigham Young ascended to the leadership of the church at the age of 46 and led the Mormon pioneers west as Smith had advised, first to Nebraska and then on to Utah where 143 men, three women and two children stopped and settled several miles east of the Great Salt Lake on July 24, 1847. Young set up a system of communal crop sharing and guided the settlement spiritually and politically as thousands of Mormon pioneers came to Salt Lake. But it was not to be an insular Mormon town for long.＜/p＞ ＜p＞The California Gold Rush brought many fortune-seekers through Salt Lake City which was becoming a trading post and crossroads. The railroads were crossing the territory as well and soon there would be rich mineral strikes in the nearby mountains. Most intrusive of all was the federal government that battled the Mormons, sometimes with soldiers but mostly through the courts, over the Mormon practice of polygamy. Tensions between the church and non-Mormons would not ease until the early 1900s.＜/p＞ ＜p＞By that time Salt Lake City was the dominant city of the Intermountain West, enriched by the mines and the railroads and the banks the wealth financed. Unlike many cities that annexed surrounding towns as they expanded through the 20th century, Salt Lake City watched its suburbs incorporate as separate towns and actually lost population. Downtown withered as the metropolitan area exploded. But contemporary histories of Canton in the mid-1900s made no mention of Jim Thorpe and the Canton Bulldogs and an organizational meeting in the downtown Hupmobile dealership in 1920 that spawned what was to become the National Football League. Before there was an NFL Canton was known for harvesting tools and ball bearings and bricks and William McKinley, 25th President of the United States.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Bezaleel wells laid out the town in the flood plain where three branches of the Nimshillen Creek come together in 1805. Wells did future typesetters a favor and passed on calling the new settlement "Bezaleelville" and instead named the village after the town in China as a memorial to a trader named John O'Donnell, whom Wells admired. The nascent town was dealt an early blow when the great Ohio and Erie Canal was routed eight miles to the west through Massillon in the 1820s. But the canal age was destined to be short-lived and Canton's lack of water access to the Great Lakes and the Ohio River was rendered meaningless by the coming of the railroad.＜/p＞ ＜p＞Canton began making things in the early going - in the days before the Civil War as many as six kinds of reapers were manufactured in Stark County. Its industrial heritage placed the town in good stead when northeastern Ohio became a bustling center of the Steel Age. Town workers became skilled shapers of steel products, a reputation that convinced Henry H. Timken, a carriage manufacturer from St. Louis to build a factory in Canton to produce his new tapered roller bearings in 1898. Canton had its largest employer and became the world's biggest manufacturer of roller bearings.＜/p＞ ＜p＞As its manufacturing economy eroded Canton became an enthusiastic player in urban renewal.
