Mass incarceration is one of the greatest social problems facing the United States today. America incarcerates a greater percentage of its population than any other country and is one of only two countries that requires arrested individuals to pay bail to be released from jail while awaiting trial. After arrest, the bail decision is the single most important cause of mass incarceration, yet this decision is often neglected since it is made in less than two minutes. Shima Baradaran Baughman draws on constitutional rights and new empirical research to show how we can reform bail in America. Tracing the history of bail, she demonstrates how it has become an oppressive tool of the courts that disadvantages minority and poor defendants and shows how we can reform bail to alleviate mass incarceration. By implementing these reforms, she argues, we can restore constitutional rights and release more defendants, while lowering crime rates.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Look Up, Binghamton! A Walking Tour of Binghamton, New York【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

The two most important names in Binghamton’s early history were William Bingham and Joshua Whitney. Bingham was a wealthy Philadelphia banker who after 1792 owned the land around the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers. He dreamed of developing a busy trading village at such a favored location and to that end hired Whitney to be his land agent. Whitney worked tirelessly to build the new settlement; he laid out street plans, he constructed the first courthouse and erected the first bridge over the Susquehanna River. Bingham died in 1804 and never got around to actually visiting the area but his name was on the deed so the town was named for him once the original name of Chenango Point was wiped away. Nothing was named for Whitney who did most of the work building the place.

Already a busy crossroads town, Binghamton’s stature as a transportation hub was enhanced further in 1837 with the opening of the Chenango Canal that linked the town to the Erie Canal. The first great business to appear was cigar-making and Binghamton became the nation’s second largest supplier of cigars, behind only New York City. More than 5,000 workers were employed rolling over 100 million cigars a year. But there were other products as well; by the end of the 1800s over 200 hundred different types of products were being shipped from Binghamton.

About that time, in 1890, a leather supplier from Dedham, Massachusetts arrived in Binghamton and bought into a distressed Lester Brothers Shoe Company. Henry B. Endicott sold enough boots to turn a small profit, but he was dissatisfied with his manager. A foreman from the Lester days applied for the job and stated confidently that he would work for nothing for one year if he did not show results. With George F. Johnson handling the manufacturing and Endicott the finances, the firm of Endicott-Johnson became the largest shoe company in the world, employing 20,000 workers in the area. By the time George Johnson stepped down in 1930, Endicott-Johnson had sold its one billionth shoe.

Binghamton’s population peaked in the 1950s with over 80,000 and about that time the city energetically embraced the urban renewal craze transforming America. The result is that the city spent the last half of the 20th century losing both people and buildings. To see what remains our walking tour will explore both sides of the Chenango River; the West Side where wealthy Binghamtonians constructed lavish mansions and the east bank where business and government have clustered for over 200 years and we will begin our double loop, figure-eight exploration where all city roads lead...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

After Kentucky became a state, five commissioners were appointed on June 20, 1792, to choose a location for the capital. They had several communities jostling for the honor and presumably a list of criteria but most importantly the commissioners were looking for free land and free buildings. General James Wilkinson who had purchased this land on the north side of the Kentucky River in 1786 offered the use of one of his buildings for seven years, 10 boxes of window glass, 1,500 pounds of nails, a passel of locks and hinges plus the use of a sawmill, quarry, wagon and two good horses. And Frankfort boosters threw in $3,000 of gold. Frankfort, named for Stephen Frank who was killed in 1780 by Indians while making salt in a ford of the Kentucky River, became the capital of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

All was amicable enough in the early going but with a covetous and increasingly powerful town on either side, the capital never rested easily in Frankfort. Twice the state Capitol burned, in 1815 and 1824, and each time Louisville and Lexington made ominous noises about shifting the seat of government away from Frankfort. Even after a grand government temple was constructed to serve as Kentucky state capitol in 1830 the town did not leap into prominence. The population grew from 1,682 to 1,917 over the next ten years. In fact, in 1950, even after annexing South Frankfort, there were still fewer than 12,000 people in the capital city.

The economic growth of Frankfort was derailed by the railroads that shifted dreams from the Kentucky River to the ports of the Ohio River. Frankfort settled into the life of a prosperous town of manufacturing concerns of local importance. There were distilleries, leather-makers, tobacco markets, pork processing, lumbering and hemp production. Today the streets of the business district, named by Wilkinson for family members and friends who were Colonial-era military leaders, are filled with souvenirs of the 19th century, as befits a town that has never been in a rush to modernize and our walking tour will begin at the stateliest of them all...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour from walkthetown.com is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

The “father” and “mother” of Hollywood were Hobart Johnstone Whitley and Daeida Wilcox Beveridge. Whitley bought the 500-acre E.C. Hurd ranch in the 1880s which he called “Hollywood” from a name the Whitleys had discovered on their honeymoon. Before that the area was know to the scattered ranchers and fruit growers here as the Cahuenga Valley, after the pass in the Santa Monica Mountains immediately to the north.

Harvey Henderson Wilcox was born in New York state in 1832 and his family migrated to Michigan when he was a teen. As an adult he kicked around the Midwest cobbling shoes and trading real estate. In his fifties, after his first wife died in Kansas of tuberculosis, Wilcox married Daeida “Ida” Hartell, a girl more than thirty years his junior and relocated his ranch to southern California, purchasing land for $150 an acre. Wilcox tried farming figs like his neighbors but after a few years he decided to subdivide the land and sell lots for $1,000 each. Ida borrowed her neighbor’s name, which she may have first heard from a seatmate on a train ride from Kansas - or not, and on February 1, 1887 Harvey Wilcox filed a plat of the subdivision with the Los Angeles County Recorder’s office, the first time “Hollywood” appeared on a deed.

Wilcox died in 1891 but his wife led development efforts and was instrumental in establishing much of Hollywood’s civic infrastructure, including the city hall, library, police station, primary school, tennis club, post office, city park, and much of the commercial district. She also donated land for three churches and space for Hollywood’s first theatrical productions. She came to be called the “Mother of Hollywood,” and when Daeida died in 1914, the Los Angeles Times reported that it was Daeida’s dream of beauty that gave world fame to Hollywood.

To the world today Hollywood means movies. The early years of the movie industry were centered around New York City but Thomas Edison’s film patent fees helped send the pioneering studios west. Most didn’t stop until they reached the favorable year-round weather of Southern California. Short films were being made here by 1906 and by 1911 Los Angeles was second only to New York in motion picture production and by 1915 most movies were being made here. Four major film companies ? Paramount, Warner Bros., RKO and Columbia ? had studios clustered in Hollywood as the formerly somnambulant suburb skyrocketed to international stardom.

In 1910, when the development was mostly fields of grain and citrus trees town officials voted for Hollywood to be annexed into the City of Los Angeles to insure a reliable supply ofwater. In a handful of years that community was unrecognizable. After the movie companies came radio studios then set up shop in Hollywood in the 1930s, television studios in the 1940s and recording studios in the 1950s. Most have since dispersed to neighboring communities, leaving behind more iconic landmarks than any community of similar size and we’ll begin our tour at the most famous intersection in the world...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

History of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Volume VI: The Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Policy 1955-1956 - Eisenhower Cold War New Look Strategic Plans, Missiles, Suez Canal, Taiwan【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】History of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Volume VI: The Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Policy 1955-1956 - Eisenhower Cold War New Look Strategic Plans, Missiles, Suez Canal, Taiwan【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

When this Volume first saw the light of day some 20 years ago, the United States and the Soviet Union were frozen in one of the most frigid antagonisms of the cold war. Each country was making every effort to develop and deploy the new weapons of mass destruction, to strengthen its own bloc of allies, and to expand its influence and control around the world.

To deal with this potent potential enemy, the Eisenhower administration had redirected its strategy and force planning to emphasize strategic retaliatory striking power. Nuclear weapons delivered by ballistic missiles were the essential components of the New Look, as the policy came to be called. Robert J. Watson has described the JCS role in the creation of the New Look in Volume V of this series.

This Volume VI is primarily concerned with the way the Joint Chiefs of Staff sought to "fine tune" the New Look through strategic plans, the force levels to support them, and allocation of responsibility among the military services for developing and operating the new weapons systems. This turned out to be a contentious process owing to interservice disagreement. Other important matters involving the Joint Chiefs of Staff included the strengthening of NATO, extension of collective security to the Middle and Far East through CENTO and SEATO, commenting on arms control proposals, and helping prepare the military assistance program. Organizational matters, which are the subject of other publications by the Historical Office, are omitted.

Basic National Security Policy, 1953 * Policy Issues at the Beginning of 1953 * Early Decisions of the New Administration * A New Statement of National Security Policy: NSC 153/1 * Project Solarium * The New Joint Chiefs of Staff and Their Recommendations * A New Policy Directive: NSC 162/2 * Military Strategy Reexamined: JCS 2101/113 * Differences among the Joint Chiefs of Staff * The New Look and Its Interpretation * 2. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

In its entire 981-mile run in Colonial times there was only one barrier to navigation on the Ohio River, a series of dangerous rapids known as the Falls of the Ohio. Since travelers in either direction were forced to stop here it was pretty certain that a town would be settled here eventually. The reality came in 1780 when George Rogers Clark was campaigning in the then Northwest during the American Revolution. As a token of appreciation for his assistance in the struggle for independence the settlement was named after King Louis XVI of France.

Early growth was spurred by the loading and unloading of boats but Lexington outpaced Louisville as Kentucky's first town after statehood came in 1792. That changed forever in 1811 when the steamboat New Orleans chugged into port, the first successful steamer on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Soon travel time from New Orleans to Louisville was cut to 12 days, less than half the time it took keel-boats to float down the river. In 1830 the two-mile Louisville and Portland Canal became the first artificial passage to be completed in America on a major river and the town boomed. By 1850 Louisville was one of America's ten most populous cities.

Louisville officially became a major league city in 1876 when the Louisville Grays became of charter member of baseball's National League. The Grays finished fifth in professional baseball's debut season. A year earlier Aristides outran 14 other horses to claim the winner's purse of $2,850 in the first Kentucky Derby.

The town hugged the Ohio River for the better part of its first 100 years, spreading out from east to west first along Main Street and then one block further south on Market Street. In the 20th century development sprinted south along Fourth Street giving Louisville a T-shaped footprint. Our walking tour will mimic the historical development of the town and we will begin at the banks of the Ohio River where the waterway is its widest...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

For the past 100 years pert near every description of Seattle contains the phrase "largest city in the Pacific Northwest." The original settling party in 1851 seemed to sense this would be the case. They had come overland by wagon train from Illinois and boldly named their encampment "New York." Similar grandiose thinking saw party leader Arthur A. Denny wrote to his brother that he had found "a valley that will support a thousand families." But alas the settlers were on the west side of Puget Sound on Alki Point with sandy beaches that did not allow for easy loading and unloading of ships. Denny staked claims across the water along Elliott Bay and named the new settlement after the chief of the friendly Duwamish Indians. In short order the original cabins on Alki Point were abandoned and all the pioneers gathered at the site of current Seattle.

Seattle's growth was never steady but came in waves of prosperity sandwiched around troughs of hard times. In the early days Seattle got the Territorial University while rivals Tacoma and Olympia got the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway and the capital, respectively. After thirty years Seattle's population still numbered around 3,000 and the streets were unpaved when the first boom - in timber - caused the population to jump to over 40,000.

In the middle of the afternoon on June 6, 1889 fire broke out in a cabinet shop at First Avenue and Madison Street and before the day was over 50 downtown blocks and $15 million of property were consumed. The City wasted no time in reinventing itself. Eight-foot retaining walls were built around the remains of charred buildings, filled in to raise the grade over muddy tidal flats and paved for the first time. Plans were launched to level the hills near the shoreline. There would be no more wooden buildings downtown. Then the financial Panic of 1893 ground progress to a halt.

The dark days did not last long. In 1897 the transport Portland steamed into port with "a ton of gold" from the Yukon River district in Alaska. In the years to come it was estimated that Seattle controlled 95 percent of the the total amount of Alaskan shipping. When many of the prospectors returned they didn't travel much past Seattle. By 1910 the population was pushing 250,000 and Seattle was one of the 25 largest cities in America.

During this time the Pike Place Market organized to enable small truck farmers, many Japanese, to sell goods directly to the public. Stalls were assigned by drawing lots daily to prevent any one vendor from monopolizing the trade as the market expanded over several buildings. This is where our walking tour will begin and from here we will move up into the retail district where we will encounter such familiar names as Starbucks and Nordstrom and Eddie Bauer but we will start with a pig named Rachel...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour.

San Francisco's Chinatown, with a start date of 1848, is the oldest Chinatown in North America and the largest Chinese community outside Asia. Chinatown is the most densely populated neighborhood in the city and its streets and narrow alleys are a tightly packed menagerie of buildings with small stores selling everything from groceries to souvenirs. Chinatown retains its customs, languages, places of worship, social clubs, and identity. It has developed its own government and carries on as a "city-within-a-city."

While San Francisco today might seem unimaginable without Chinatown, its residents were forced to fight for the ground several times since its foundation. In the wake of rampant unemployment in the wake of the Panic of 1873 racial tensions in San Francisco flared into full-blown race riots. In response to the violence, the Consolidated Chinese Benevolent Association or the Chinese Six Companies was created as a means of providing the community with a unified voice. One of their first battles was over immigration quotas when the United States government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first of several odious laws targeting the Chinese.

In the rebuilding effort after the 1906 Earthquake city officials saw an opportunity to ship the Chinese to the southern fringes of the city. The Chinese Six Companies thwarted the plan, mostly by agreeing to transform the neighborhood into a westernized tourist attraction. It is that vision of Chinatown that endures today.

Chinatown has captured the popular imagination. Bruce Lee was born here; chop suey was popularized here; Humphrey Bogart solved the intricacies of the Maltese Falcon here. Our walking tour of Chinatown will find temples, fortune cookies and several buildings by one of the most famous women architects in America and it will all start in an open space oft times referred to as "the Heart of Chinatown"...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Is getting a new car or job a blessing? Maybe, but that's not what Scripture tells us it means to be blessed. In Christ Alone is an in-depth study of blessings found only in Christ, as expressed in Ephesians 1. It will challenge the modern use of the word blessed and open our eyes to true blessings that are not temporal.
For centuries, humans have dreaded (and anticipated) the end of the world. These fears, fuelled by natural disasters, famines, world wars, and the writings of people like Nostradamus and Jeane Dixon have left us with more questions than answers. In The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Last Days, Richard H. Perry goes to the definitive source on the subject: the Bible itself. While the book is as exciting as an action/adventure novel, the author's primary source is the Bible, and he guides his readers to an understanding of the Last Day by using related Scripture. For fans of the Left Behind series. Written for a general audience in addition to a Christian one.
The first comprehensive resource for chaplains and campus ministers of all faith traditionsーa vital resource for ministry in multifaith and secular contexts.

Caregiver, educator, trustee of institutional traditions, public religious voice and, occasionally, prophet: in an increasingly multifaith, multicultural, global world, the role of the college or university chaplain has changed. Why We Make Mistakes How We Look Without Seeing, Forget Things in Seconds, and Are All Pretty Sure WeAre Way Above Average【電子書籍】[ Joseph T. Hallinan ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Why We Make Mistakes How We Look Without Seeing, Forget Things in Seconds, and Are All Pretty Sure WeAre Way Above Average【電子書籍】[ Joseph T. Hallinan ]

We forget our passwords. We pay too much to go to the gym. We think we’d be happier if we lived in California (we wouldn’t), and we think we should stick with our first answer on tests (we shouldn’t). Why do we make mistakes? And could we do a little better?

We human beings have design flaws. Our eyes play tricks on us, our stories change in the retelling, and most of us are fairly sure we’re way above average. In Why We Make Mistakes, journalist Joseph T. Hallinan sets out to explore the captivating science of human errorーhow we think, see, remember, and forget, and how this sets us up for wholly irresistible mistakes.

In his quest to understand our imperfections, Hallinan delves into psychology, neuroscience, and economics, with forays into aviation, consumer behavior, geography, football, stock picking, and more. He discovers that some of the same qualities that make us efficient also make us error prone. We learn to move rapidly through the world, quickly recognizing patternsーbut overlooking details. Which is why thirteen-year-old boys discover errors that NASA scientists missーand why you can’t find the beer in your refrigerator.

Why We Make Mistakes is enlivened by real-life storiesーof weathermen whose predictions are uncannily accurate and a witness who sent an innocent man to jailーand offers valuable advice, such as how to remember where you’ve hidden something important. You’ll learn why multitasking is a bad idea, why men make errors women don’t, and why most people think San Diego is west of Reno (it’s not).

Why We Make Mistakes will open your eyes to the reasons behind your mistakesーand have you vowing to do better the next time.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Contending for the Truth: A Biblical Look at Thirteen Contentious Doctrines【電子書籍】[ L. J. Anderson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Contending for the Truth: A Biblical Look at Thirteen Contentious Doctrines【電子書籍】[ L. J. Anderson ]

What happens when God's people stop contending for the truth?

In a world where confusion is often mistaken for compassion, and doctrinal compromise is praised as unity, Christians must not only believe the truth, they must be equipped to defend it. Contending for the Truth explores thirteen highly debated doctrines in Christianity today, applying biblical rigor to each and calling believers to stand firm on Scripture.

From apologetics to creationism, church discipline to the doctrine of inerrancy, this book walks readers through contentious topics with clarity and conviction. Each chapter grounds its arguments in Scripture, compares doctrinal views, and invites readers to test everything against the Word of God, not tradition, consensus, or culture.

Whether used for personal study, classroom engagement, or group discussion, this book will help readers:

Identify theological drift in today's church

Compare key doctrines against Scripture itself

Engage contentious issues with clarity and confidence

Contend for the faith with humility and courage

This is not a primer on the basics of the faith. It's a theological sharpening stone for those seeking to grow, think, and live more biblically.

Written by L. J. Anderson, author, independent scholar, and founder of Lamad Press, Contending for the Truth serves as a companion volume to his earlier work, Theology and Apologetics, applying that foundational method to real-world doctrinal challenges. Anderson holds a Master of Divinity, is pursuing a PhD in theological studies, and publishes accessible, academically grounded works for pastors, students, and lay leaders alike.

If you're ready to think deeply, study biblically, and live faithfully, this book will challenge and equip you.

Contents:

Introduction

Why God?

The Moral Argument

Truth

The Inerrancy of Scripture

Gnosticism: A Biblical and Historical Response

Biblical Forgiveness

Biblical Church Discipline

Is Christianity a Religion or a Relationship?

Religious Freedom

Scientific Naturalism v Creationism

Young Earth v Old Earth Creationism

Sons of God

The Doctrine of Election

A Brief Call to Action

Also by L. Preacher Woman A Critical Look at Sexism without Sexists【電子書籍】[ Katie Lauve-Moon ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Preacher Woman A Critical Look at Sexism without Sexists【電子書籍】[ Katie Lauve-Moon ]

When organizations are committed to gender equality, what gets in the way of their achieving it? How and why do well-intentioned people end up reinforcing sexism? Katie Lauve-Moon examines these questions by focusing on religious congregations that separated from their mainline denomination in order to support women's equal leadership. In Preacher Woman, Lauve-Moon concentrates on congregations affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). Women are enrolling in Baptist seminaries at almost equal rates as men and CBF identifies the equal leadership of women as a core component of its collective identity, yet only five percent of CBF congregations employ women as solo senior pastors. Preacher Woman explores how congregations can be committed to ideas of gender parity while still falling short in practice. Lauve-Moon investigates how institutional sexism is upheld through both unconscious and conscious biases. In doing so, she demonstrates that addressing issues of sexism and gender inequality within organizations must extend beyond good intentions and inclusive policies.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Look Out The World without Christians【電子書籍】[ Jim Zeigler ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Look Out The World without Christians【電子書籍】[ Jim Zeigler ]

There are four chapters in the Bible where Satan’s influence is not seen. These are Genesis one and two which occur before the fall of man and Revelation twenty-one and twenty-two that describes the glories of the millennial kingdom and heaven after the judgment of Satan.

Jesus is the First and the Last, the Beginning and End and thus knows the complete history, past, present, and future until time ends.

Since the time of creation, Satan has been in a constant battle against God to overthrow his control of the earth and mankind. This battle will not end until Satan is wholly defeated and judged by being cast into the lake of the fire for eternity. In the meantime, he continually battles to gain control of God’s creation and place himself as the God of this world. I began a series of three books to inform those living in the end times of what to expect as God brings rescue to his saints and judgment to his enemies.

In my first book on the subject of the End Times titled “Lookup: Redemption in this Generation,” I tried to explain the world situation at the time when Christ will return for his church. Commonly called the rapture. This writing deals with the preparation for and the events of the seven-year period when God brings judgment to the unbelieving on earth and reclaims the world that Adam gave to Satan when he sinned against God. A third book titled “Look Around: God’s New World Order” is planned to follow.

How as we close this period of human history we need to know what God has planned for the near and far future. If you believe that Jesus died for your sins and reconciled you with God, then you should be looking for the rapture of the church and Jesus’ glorious return to take us to be with him. If you don’t believe this, then it’s time to prepare for the terrible time I head for those who dwell on earth. God’s judgment is about to fall. So you either need to Look Up or Look Out.

“Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let until he is taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” 2 Thessalonians 2:5-10

But Satan is not yet defeated and has one last attempt at usurping God’s throne and forcing the people of the world to worship him. He even has an explanation for why, all of a sudden, the Christians have disappeared.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The First Liberal A Secular Look at Jesus' Socio-Political Ideas and How They Became the Basis of Modern Liberalism【電子書籍】[ Dennis Martin Altman ]

"Altman has picked up on things that a good portion of the population has not yet discovered The First Liberal is a timely book, and one I think will get more than a few people talking. It is the kind of talk that has been needed for a long time."-Reverend Fred C. Plumer, president, The Center for Progressive Christianity

Dennis Altman frames a fascinating discussion for both conservatives and liberals. Using Jesus' teachings as logical arguments unadorned by religious overtones, Altman challenges established notions with eye-opening impact.

Altman highlights how Jesus brought humanist values to the Roman world of cruelty and greed. He shows how Jesus was the first liberal voice among religious and political establishments, and the first major advocate for women's and minorities' rights. Altman examines Jesus' teachings in a modern context: our obligations to one another, the dangers of greed, the effective power of nonviolence, and the importance of liberal values in shaping the world for our children.

Regardless of your political or religious orientation, this exciting book will open new doors for you.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A Second Look at the Savior Hearing His Voice【電子書籍】[ Byron Smith ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Second Look at the Savior Hearing His Voice【電子書籍】[ Byron Smith ]

Have you ever seen yourself in the gallery of pictures presented to us in scripture? Maybe you see yourself as a Job pondering what Gods purpose is. A Jonah as he is given a mission he doesnt want. A Mary, unsure of the path before her but willing to be Gods instrument. This books purpose is to shed light on these questions that we bring before the throne of God. Many times the response is to move forward and walk on water. In these moments of our journey with Him we rejoice; feeling the excitement of Seeking and Finding a God who is dreaming with us. Other times we are presented with Be Still and Know lessons which cause many to stumble and question God as they feel swallowed up by the sea of life. This study dives into the heart of both areas. In doing so we will enter a much broader topic of pain and suffering, where Gods silence and His answers meet.

A Second Look at the Savior is a thoughtful and inspiring testimony. Byron walks us through Scripture and his own personal faith journey. He leads us on a quest to recognize Gods calling to live a life of faith in the darkness. He reminds us powerfully that God can be trusted in our most vulnerable moments.

Dr. Mike Williams, President Faulkner University

Byron Smith has worked in several ministries over the last twenty years. After receiving his BA in biblical studies through Faulkner University, he has served as youth minister, inner city evangelist, and presently the director of Gulf Coast Bible Camp. Throughout all these works, he has been tied to the youth primarily and credits each and every one of them for helping him to keep a cool mind, sharp wit, and sense of humor!

A Second Look at the Savior is the first installment in a new series. This book takes the reader down a path of discovery as we look at how God continues to shape us in His likeness. No matter where we are on our individual walks with Him, lessons are being presented. The Dave Test A Raw Look at Real Faith in Hard Times【電子書籍】[ Frederick W. Schmidt ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Dave Test A Raw Look at Real Faith in Hard Times【電子書籍】[ Frederick W. Schmidt ]

What is the Dave Test? Basic, important, raw questions you can ask yourself when someone you love is suffering, in crisis, unhinged, maybe dying. Before you even think about opening your mouth and blowing chunks of platitudes, or running, or “minimizing the painful,” do the real work of living, of being a friend: take the Dave Test. Roughly speaking the modern American mindset revolves around this life philosophy: ・ Minimize the painful or unwelcome. ・ Maximize the pleasant and satisfying. ・ If and when the painful or the unwelcome happens, run. ・ Dispense with it as quickly as possible and get back to feeling good. But what if we learn to move past our comfort zones, transcend our own lives and connect with those who suffer? When we truly connect with others, it is all but impossible to insulate ourselves from life’s harsher realities. This book is about the dangerous business of exposing our own fragile lives to the mortality of ourselves and others. The Dave Test takes the demand for honesty, plain talk, and faith seriously.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Look Up, Atlanta! A Walking Tour of Midtown【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Look Up, Atlanta! A Walking Tour of Midtown【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

Midtown Atlanta has had a volatile history although it began peacefully as a pine forest north of the city. In 1848 most of the land above North Avenue - which was just that, the northern boundary of Atlanta - was purchased by Richard Peters to provide fuel to power his downtown flour mill. Over the next 40 years Peters subdivided the cleared forest lands and platted out residential lots; he built his own home at the corner of Peachtree and 4th streets.

A few blocks north Peachtree Street looped around a thirty-foot ravine that came to be called "Tight Squeeze" for ne'er do wells and thieves that inhabited the area and made it a "tight squeeze getting through there with your life." In the 1880s the ravine was filled in and the riff-raff herded out which cleared the way for wealthy Atlantans to move in. By World War I the blocks between West Peachtree Street to the west and Piedmont Street to the east above 8th Street housed the city's elite.

After World War II, however, the march to ever more distant suburbs began in earnest and the area was once again in decline, best described as "seedy." The pendulum swung back again in the 1980s and Midtown rebounded into the second most important financial district in Atlanta, with many of its skyscrapers. Alas, in the streets along the Peachtree Corridor, very little is left over of the area's original architecture including single-family homes and mansions. Our walking tour of Midtown will begin on that long-ago northern boundary of Atlanta, looking up at the highest of the high-rises...
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Titanic A Fresh Look at the Evidence by a Former Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents【電子書籍】[ John Lang ]

The sinking of the Titanic on her maiden voyage in April 1912 was one of the defining moments of the twentieth century. Books and films about the disaster that befell the iconic liner are commonplace, and it seems almost inconceivable that anything fresh can emerge. But there is one angle that has not been covered, and Titanic: A Fresh Look at the Evidence by a Former Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents examines the events of April 1912 from that completely new perspective. John Lang brings the standards of a twenty-first-century accident investigation to bear on the events of April 1912, using his expertise and his investigator's instinct to determine exactly what happened a century ago, and what important lessons still need to be learned.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
