Many voices speaking today about the end times sound a lot like Chicken Little: they prophesy doom and destruction, the Antichrist and Armageddon. All this apocalyptic speculation creates an atmosphere of sensationalism and dreadbut the Revelation of Jesus to John was meant to bring hope. Too many Christians have become hesitant to study this book of the Bible because of the confusion that surrounds it. But as an experienced pastor, Dan Boone affirms that any child of God can read and understand the truth of Revelation. His friendly, conversational style brings the message of Revelation into the idiom of life in our contemporary world.

A Walking Tour of Vicksburg, Mississippi【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour from walkthetown.com is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

Newitt Vick was a Methodist minister from Virginia who established one of the first missions in Mississippi in 1814 on land he purchased from the government about six miles east of the the current townsite. While tending to converts Vick also had an eye for business, especially as the nation's richest cotton-growing lands were being developed around him. He bought up land around the confluence of the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers and sketched out plans for a port city. An outbreak of yellow fever claimed both Vick and his wife in 1819 but a son-in-law, John Lane took the plans, sold lots to pay Vick debts and by 1825 had launched a thriving village that was named in the minister's honor.

Vicksburg was very quickly a bustling port town. In addition to the trade arriving across the docks there were two soap factories, sawmills, carriage and wagon works, and a hospital in town in short order. By 1860 there were five churches, four fire companies and three newspapers in town. When the Civil War erupted Vicksburg was recognized on both sides as "the Gibraltar of the Confederacy." it took more than a year of military operations and one of the greatest strategic campaigns in American military history, culminating in a six-week siege, to drive the rebels from their fortress of a town. The Vicksburg Campaign made the career of General Ulysses S. Grant and doomed the Confederacy when General John Clifford Pemberton surrendered the town on July 4, 1863.

When the war ended the Vicksburg economy was crippled and much of its building stock damaged or destroyed. Reconstruction in the years following the war did not bring immediate relief. Even the Mississippi River turned against Vicksburg when it cut a new channel and abandoned the waterfront in 1876.

Things began to turn around for Mississippi's largest city in the 1880s. The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad arrived in 1884, steamboats filled the Mississippi River and a streetcar system was initiated. The Mississippi River was even brought back by the United States Corps of Engineers with a diversion canal in the Yazoo River.

The boom years subsided after 1910 with the disappearance of the steamboat trade. The population in Vicksburg has changed little in the past 100 years, even as the streetscape has been altered regularly. The town grew up around Main Street but after a fire in 1839 the commercial district shifted down to Washington Street, parallel to the water. Fires visited the downtown area regularly in 1846, 2885, 1910 and 1939, consuming entire blocks. A December 5, 1953 tornado crashed through the business district taking with it numerous long-standing properties in town.

In the 1970s Vicksburg was an active player in urban renewal, pulling down hundreds of buildings. Entire blocks were lost and many buildings left standing picked up unfortunate modern facelifts. Our walking tour to seek out what remains of the character of the historic river town will start, naturally, enough, down by the water...

North Korea remains a puzzle to Americans. How did this countryーone of the most isolated in the world and in the policy cross hairs of every U.S. administration during the past 30 yearsーprogress from zero nuclear weapons in 2001 to a threatening arsenal of perhaps 50 such weapons in 2021?

Hinge Points brings readers literally inside the North Korean nuclear program, joining Siegfried Hecker to see what he saw and hear what he heard in his visits to North Korea from 2004 to 2010. Hecker goes beyond the technical detailsーdescribed in plain English from his on-the-ground experience at the North's nuclear center at Yongbyonーto put the nuclear program exactly where it belongs, in the context of decades of fateful foreign policy decisions in Pyongyang and Washington.

Describing these decisions as "hinge points," he traces the consequences of opportunities missed by both sides. The result has been that successive U.S. administrations have been unable to prevent the North, with the weakest of hands, from becoming one of only three countries in the world that might target the United States with nuclear weapons. Hecker's unique ability to marry the technical with the diplomatic is well informed by his interactions with North Korean and U.S. officials over many years, while his years of working with Russian, Chinese, Indian, and Pakistani nuclear officials have given him an unmatched breadth of experience from which to view and interpret the thinking and perspective of the North Koreans.

A Bold and Honest Look at the Eternal Question【電子書籍】[ Ronald Higdon ]

Why is it that there is so much suffering in the world? Why are the innocent so often victims? Doesn’t God care?

Through the course of over fifty-five years of pastoral ministry, Dr. Ron Higdon has responded to people who came to him with aching hearts and burning questions. It had nothing to do with abandoning their faith, but everything to do with finding a place in that faith for the kinds of questions that would not go away.

With the gentleness of a pastor and the unblinking look of a theologian, the author takes the reader through the questions we all want and need to ask and gives them thorough scrutiny.

In the light of the disparity in the world between God’s love and the pain, suffering, and tragedy all around us, this book offers some new questions and new perspectives. Plus, it concludes with a list of twenty-five strategies of things to remember and some things to do when living in a world where bad things happen.

This book is suitable for individual reading, but will truly shine in small groups of church-wide studies of this important topic.

The complete work of the Entered Apprentice, Fellow-craft and Master-mason's Degrees, with their ceremonies, lectures, etc.

It has doubtless been a matter of comment and surprise among the Members of the Fraternity that all the books which are avowedly intended to serve as guides to the Work of a Lodge invariably contain more or less than their professed object demands. They are usually deficient in the very points that may be most needed, rendering the use of a separate Monitor unavoidable; while, on the other hand, they include a great deal of information on matters with which every Mason is necessarily perfectly familiar, and which it is neither needful nor desirable to be communicated to the uninitiated. It has been the aim of the Compiler of this little volume to avoid both these defects: first, by omitting all Passwords, Grips, and other esoteric subjects; and second, by giving the Work of the first three degrees monitorially as well as ritually complete, in plain language for ready reference, and entirely free from the tedious perplexities of cypher or other arbitrary and unintelligible contractions.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Lavender Look at the Temple A Gay Perspective of the Peoples Temple【電子書籍】[ Michael Bellefountaine ]

For most of its history, the Peoples Temple existed under the radar. Most had never even heard of the church until news of the tragic deaths of more than nine hundred men, women, and children in the jungles of Guyana broke in November of 1978.Th e lives and deaths of the members of the Peoples Temple are ones that remain mostly misunderstood to this day. And for the gay and lesbian members and their families, the truth is sometimes even harder to ?nd.

Author Bellefountainean activist, a scholar, and proud member of the gay communityprovides a new perspective of the Temple. His detailed research into the inner workings of the Peoples Temple is presented, with a special look at the lives of the gay and lesbian members of the Peoples Temple community. Bellefountaine looked deep into the historical connection between Jim Joness Peoples Temple and the city of San Francisco, as well as the connection San Franciscos ?rst gay councilman, Harvey Milk, had with the Peoples Temple.

The power that acceptanceeven false acceptancecan have on people is explored through the detailed accounts of members of the temple community.

Questions, questions, questions. Political events, sporting venues, breaking news, all elicit questions. Questions come in a various forms, for a variety of reasons. Some probing, some patronizing, other preposterous, questions areーquestions. We are in an age when, if you stick a microphone or other type of recording device in someone’s face, there is a question that follows.

Some questions are rude, others are ridiculous. For example, ever heard an interviewer ask a question and wonder what was the point or how could it be appropriate under the circumstances? Too many times, questions are asked for shock value rather than attempting to prompt an open, honest response. Still others are used to trap or traumatize.

In Questions Jesus Asked, readers will see Jesus as the master of asking the right questions. Those questions provoked the responder to examine and see themselves spiritually in a new, and in most cases, life-changing way. From these questions and the answers they elicited, we get a glimpse into our own lives as we walk and witness for the cause of Christ. Whether a new or seasoned believer, these questions are as pertinent today as they were when Jesus asked them. It may do us a great service to answer them afresh as well.

The second in the Layman’s Look series, Questions Jesus Ask, looks at a variety of questions Jesus asked a very diverse audience. Some of those who Jesus confronted and challenged included the blind, the rich, the curious, his disciples and avowed enemy. The questions address not only spiritual and practical issues, but do so in a manner that exposed and brings to light spiritual truths. Ultimately, those being asked the questions saw themselves and Jesus in a context that would forever change their lives. The text can be used by an individual, or in a group dynamic, such as a Sunday school environment as a weekly study.

S.V. (Steve) Dedmon earned his bachelor’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) and Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University. At ERAU, he teaches a variety of aviation law related courses. He is member of the Florida and United States Supreme Court Bars as well as past chair and current member of the Florida Bar Aviation Law committee.

Since accepting Christ, he has been a member of various Southern Baptist churches where he has taught in various ministries as well as served as a deacon. Steve is a staunch defender and zealous advocate for the divine inspiration and inerrancy of God’s Word. He has been married for 37 years to his wife Suzanne and they have two children. He is an avid tennis player and aviation enthusiast as the owner of two aircraft, one of which was the primary trainer in WWII. In this spiritually rewarding Bible study, the author shows students of Scripture how to read the parables in a way that takes into account the truth that Scripture searches us as we subject ourselves to it. When we recognize this, we can expect Scripture to transform us. An ideal tool for personal or group Bible study, with questions following each lesson, Glory Veiled and Unveiled considers the contexts and main messages of twenty-five parables and puts our hearts under the “searchlight” of Scripture, guiding us into the knowledge of Christ, our gracious and glorious king.

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

Wielding a Mexican land grant for some 44,000 acres, John Sutter arrived at the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers in 1939 and established Sutter's Fort with dreams of its one day becoming a major Western commercial center. That vision would be realized but not in the way John Sutter hoped. In January of 1848 Sutter sent an employee, James W. Marshall, to the banks of the American River to construct a sawmill. Marshall found a flake of gold and within months men from across America were headed for the Sierra foothills. The California Gold Rush prospectors overran Sutter's land and slaughtered his herds of livestock. By 1849 Sutter had given up on his empire, placed his son in charge of the business and retired.

Sutter's Embarcadero (Spanish for "landing") became Sacramento and the town grew rapidly as a trading and supply center for the gold fields. In 1850, the first California census counted 6,820 people in Sacramento. It was a bustling place but there wasn't much thought to making it the capital of the new state of California. For one thing the rivers flooded nearly every year, several times taking the fledgling city with it. And a devastating fire could be counted on every couple of years as well in the early days. The first, in 1852, burned everything from the waterfront up to 9th Street.

The Spanish capital had been in Monterey and the 1849 Constitutional Convention for the new State of California was held there. San Jose got the nod as state capital but the government types turned out not to like it. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a Californian military commander, politician, and rancher, promised a suitable capital at his namesake town of Vallejo but he was unable to pull it together so when Sacramento made a bid in 1854 the Legislature accepted.

Not that the matter was settled in everybody's eyes. There would be talk about moving the capital well into the 1900s from places like Berkeley and San Jose and Monterey but after over 150 years the matter seems likely settled. Sacramento is now the sixth largest city in California with 466,000 people and over 73,000 of them work for the state government.

So although we will explore the cobbled streets and historic buildings from the town's beginnings in Old Sacramento it is appropriate that our walking tour will begin where the California government has operated for the better part of 140 years...

For the past 100 years pert near every description of Seattle contains the phrase "largest city in the Pacific Northwest." The original settling party in 1851 seemed to sense this would be the case. They had come overland by wagon train from Illinois and boldly named their encampment "New York." Similar grandiose thinking saw party leader Arthur A. Denny wrote to his brother that he had found "a valley that will support a thousand families." But alas the settlers were on the west side of Puget Sound on Alki Point with sandy beaches that did not allow for easy loading and unloading of ships. Denny staked claims across the water along Elliott Bay and named the new settlement after the chief of the friendly Duwamish Indians. In short order the original cabins on Alki Point were abandoned and all the pioneers gathered at the site of current Seattle.

Seattle's growth was never steady but came in waves of prosperity sandwiched around troughs of hard times. In the early days Seattle got the Territorial University while rivals Tacoma and Olympia got the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway and the capital, respectively. After thirty years Seattle's population still numbered around 3,000 and the streets were unpaved when the first boom - in timber - caused the population to jump to over 40,000.

In the middle of the afternoon on June 6, 1889 fire broke out in a cabinet shop at First Avenue and Madison Street and before the day was over 50 downtown blocks and $15 million of property were consumed. The City wasted no time in reinventing itself. Eight-foot retaining walls were built around the remains of charred buildings, filled in to raise the grade over muddy tidal flats and paved for the first time. Plans were launched to level the hills near the shoreline. There would be no more wooden buildings downtown. Then the financial Panic of 1893 ground progress to a halt.

The dark days did not last long. In 1897 the transport Portland steamed into port with "a ton of gold" from the Yukon River district in Alaska. In the years to come it was estimated that Seattle controlled 95 percent of the the total amount of Alaskan shipping. When many of the prospectors returned they didn't travel much past Seattle. By 1910 the population was pushing 250,000 and Seattle was one of the 25 largest cities in America.

Most of that growth pushed the Central Business District northward and the original city core became neglected and so run down it was known as "Skid Road." By the 1960s the future of most of the buildings in Pioneer Square lay as parking lots. Instead preservationists rallied and got a 30-acre swath of downtown designated an Historic District in 1969. Our walking tour of this collection of brick and stone Victorian buildings will start on Pioneer Square with part of Seattle's original industry, a steam-powered sawmill established by Henry Yesler...

Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

The nascent city of Charles Town was enclosed by a protective wall from 1690 to 1720 which extended down to today's Water Street. Water Street itself was Vanderhorst Creek which was later filled in. Outside the wall, at the entrance to the harbor an earth wall was held together with sticks and topped with grass along the water. Wooden boards were laid across the wall and guns aimed out across the mouth of the harbor.

In 1787, after the British had departed the city, work was begun to improve the wall. Ricks used as ballast in ships were piled into the wall. By 1820 a granite wall was completed. At this time the city's richest merchants and bankers began building Charleston's finest mansions with views of the water. The open space at the tip was used as a public park beginning in 1837.

After the Civil War began on Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861 the bombardment of the Battery ensued. Only one house, at the corner of Atlantic Street and East Battery was destroyed. Evnetually the park became known as White Point Gardens because of the pile sof bleached oyster shells on th epoint.

This walking tour will visit Charleston's oldest and finest homes in the Battery below Broad Street, an area that is virtually completely residential...

Don't Look Left: A Diary of Genocide - Atef Abu Saif (Beacon Press) 【紙書籍】 9780807018705
A harrowing and indispensable first-hand account of the experience of the first 85 days of the Israeli invasion of Gaza, from a prominent Palestinian writer In the morning I read the news. The news is about us. But it's designed for people reading it far, far away, who couldn't possibly imagine they could ever know anyone involved. It's for people who read the news to comfort themselves, to tell themselves: it's still far, far away. I read the news for different reasons: I read it to know I"m not dead. Early in the morning of Oct 7, 2023, Atef Abu Saif went swimming. It was a beautiful morning: sunny with a cool breeze. The Palestinian Authority's Minister for Culture, he was on a combined work and pleasure trip to Gaza, visiting his extended family with his 15 year old son, Yasser, and participating in National Heritage Day. Then the bombing started. Don't Look Left takes us into the day to day experiences of Gazan civilians trying to survive Israel's war against Hamas, its detail and extended narrative showing us what brief reports and video clips cannot. In a war that has taken an extraordinarily high toll on civilians, it is a crucial document--a day-to-day testimony and a deeply moving depiction of a people's fight to survive and maintain their humanity amid the chaos and trauma of mass destruction. It is also, remarkably, a powerful literary experience. Atef Abu Saif was born in Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza in 1973, and, as he writes, his first war broke out when he was two months old. He writes as only someone who knows Gaza deeply can, and only as someone who knows war can, picking out the details of ordinary life and survival amidst the possibility of death coming at any moment: washing the only shirt he has and waiting naked for three hours for it dry; noticing a cat, as terrified as the people on the street around it, hiding under a bistro table; visiting his sister-in-law's daughter in the hospital, who tells him in her dream she has no legs, and asks him if it is true. It is: she has lost her legs and a hand when her home was hit by a bomb. Trying to figure out the best place to sleep each night, and when and where to flee as the destruction intensifies. This is not like past wars with Israel, Abu Saif soon realizes--thinking of the Nakba, and of images of bombed cities from World War II. Profits from the sale of this book will go to two Palestinian charities: Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Middle East Children's Alliance.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Don’t judge people by their appearance. Judge people by what’s in their hearts. It makes you seem kind, and it emphasizes your profundity. #2 We generally do judge by appearances, even if we claim we don’t. We do so because we are evolved to do so, and because doing so has worked up until now. #3 Physiognomy, the study of character based on facial features, fell out of popularity because of its association with Master Mendicants, but it was re-popularized by the Swiss scholar Johan Kaspar Lavater in 1826. #4 Physiognomy became associated with phrenology, the belief that the nature of a person’s character can be discerned by small differences in the shape of their skull. However, this was debunked.
