A Walking Tour of Long Beach, California【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

W.E. Willmore, an Englishman, was the first to dream in Long Beach. Only he called it Willmore City in 1880 when he took an option on 4,000 acres and carved it into farming lots of 5, 10, 20 and 40 acres and advertised the land for between $12 and $20 an acre. For $100 Willmore would pepper your property with 70 orange trees on each acre. The venture failed and Willmore was gone by 1884.

The Long Beach Land and Water Company, a consortium of Los Angeles businessmen, picked up the property and kept Willmore's street plan while improving the water system, constructing a wharf and hotel and starting a horse-car line to the seashore. They called the resort town Long Beach and people came. Some even stayed and the population climbed to over 500 by the end of the century. When the Pacific Electric Railway line extended to Long Beach in 1902 things really took off.

Writers reporting on Long Beach enthused that it was the "most attractive coast town in the State." A seaside amusement park with an ocean plunge and rollercoaster was a big draw while other scribes gushed that "there are beaches and beaches; but in the whole of North America there is not another like the magnificent twelve-mile beach, of almost imperceptible slope, hard and smooth as a floor, which stretches from San Pedro to Alamitos Bay."

Long Beach was booming but also transforming. The Los Angeles Dock and Terminal Company began dredging channels and building jetties to carve out a large navigable port. In 1921 one of America's richest oil fields was uncovered on Signal Hill and Long Beach was a full-blown port city - today it is the second largest container port in the United States.

Progress was rudely interrupted at dinnertime on March 10, 1933 when a tremor in a fault in the ocean off Newport Beach rattled the town and collapsed many poorly constructed masonry buildings and 120 people died. After picking itself up Long Beach went right on expanding into the general urban malaise of the 1970s, growing into one of America's 50 largest cities. In those 1970s the Pike, the historic oceanside walkway, was ripped up, formally closing the books on the city's days as a "beach town." New attractions to bring back visitors to the ocean included the arrival of the RMS Queen Mary and Howard Hughes' wooden airship, the Spruce Goose, that was the largest flying boat ever built. Where the Pike used to meander Formula One race cars began running in the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Started in 1975, it is now the longest running major street race in North America. The Aquarium of the Pacific arrived in the 1990s.

The cityscape of Long Beach has been shaped by the earthquake generations ago and recent downtown renewal. Few buildings remain from before World War I but we will seek them out and see new ones on our walking tour that will begin at the feet of someone who has seen it all come and go since he arrived in 1915...

Look Up, Portland, Oregon! A Walking Tour East of Broadway【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

A Walking Tour East of Broadway【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

On June 1, 1905 the gates swung open at Guild's Lake to officially kick off the Lewis and Clark Centennial American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair. There were exhibitions from 21 nations and 16 American states and admission was 50 cents for adults and a quarter for kids. The fair featured an amusement park, blimp rides and was the finish line for a much-anticipated transcontinental automobile race. During the fair's fourteen-week run more than 1.5 million visitors paid the entrance fee and another million fair-goers got in gratis.

Before the Lewis and Clark Exhibition Portland had grown from a village of some 800 settlers when it was incorporated in 1851 to becoming the major port in the Northwest by the end of the 19th century. The town could have been named Boston but a coin flip between pioneers Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove landed on the latter's hometown. Located at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers its deep water harbor helped Portland emerge from the shadow of its more established neighbor at Oregon City. But by 1900 Seattle, kickstarted by the gold rushes in the Klondike, was emerging as the Pacific Northwest port of choice since mariners didn't have to navigate the pesky sand bar at the mouth of the Columbia River.

The world's fair proved just the elixir the city needed. Not only was a profit realized, unusual for international expositions, but was a success as a showcase for the city as well. In the years following the Lewis and Clark Exposition the population of Portland more than doubled from 90,000 to 200,000 and the city never looked back. A building boom started that would last over 20 years, push the city core off the Willamette River and create much of the streetscape seen today.

Our walking tour of downtown Portland in the Southwest section of the city will discover small one- and two-building blocks and pedestrian-friendly streets and we will begin this exploration east of Broadway at the oldest federal building west of the Mississippi River...

At the Hour of Death: A New Look at Evidence for Life After Death Called Death.【電子書籍】[ Erlendur Haraldsson Ph. D. ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】At the Hour of Death: A New Look at Evidence for Life After Death Called Death.【電子書籍】[ Erlendur Haraldsson Ph. D. ]

We can be certain that the body does not survive death. Once the heart stops circulating blood, the brain is no longer nourished and begins to decay. On the basis of medical evidence it would seem that, within a quarter of an hour, the personality is irreparably destroyed and the individual ceases to exist. But now there is mounting scientific evidence for a life after death. In At the Hour of Death, veteran psychical researchers Karlis Osis, Ph.D and Erlendur Haraldsson, Ph.D collated compelling evidence that suggests we, as conscious beings, do survive physical death. This book is the product of extensive interviews of over 1,000 doctors and nurses who have been present when cases of "post-mortem existence" have occurred. Extensive computer analyses of their observations have been made. The results are reported in this first truly scientific investigation of the experiences of the dying at the hour of death. What these doctors and nurses have witnessed cannot be explained away by medical, psychological, cultural, or other conditioning. Yet it may answer the fundamental question of human existence. "Finally, a book that probes death and dying with modern research techniques. Osis and Haraldsson present compelling evidence that the deathbed is the gateway to another existence. The visions of the dying appear to be not hallucinations but glimpses through the windows of eternity."Alan Vaughan, editor of New Realities Magazine"A major contribution to the scientific study of the question of post-mortem existence.
Depersonalization is a dissociative disorder, causing alteration in the perception or experience of the self and a detachment from reality. This is a fascinating and clinically relevant phenomenon neglected within psychiatry. Far from being a rare condition, it can be as prevalent as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and frequently occurs in association with other neuropsychiatric conditions. This book is a review of depersonalization, dealing with the subject from a wide range of perspectives and covering historical, conceptual, clinical, trans-cultural, pharmacological and neurobiological factors. It discusses recent neuroimaging studies providing fresh insights into the condition and opening up new opportunities to manage the symptoms with pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions. It will be relevant to psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, as well as primary care practitioners, neurologists and psychiatric nurses.

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour from walkthetown.com is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

For most of its colonial existence New Hampshire's capitol was headquartered in Portsmouth, on the coast. In 1774 the rebellious Provincial Congress moved inland to Exeter, meeting in the Exeter Town House. In January 1776, New Hampshire became the first colony to set up an independent government and the first to establish a constitution, although Rhode Island was the first to declare independence from Britain. Eventually the makeshift capitol became permanent in Concord although it was not until 1808 that Concord was named the official seat of state government.

Concord, on the western banks of the serpentine meanderings of the Merrimack River, was settled in the 1720s and was incorporated in 1734 as Rumford. It was renamed Concord in 1765 by Governor Benning Wentworth, supposedly as a testament to the settlement of a contentious border dispute.

In 1803, the first turnpike in New Hampshire opened, linking the inland town of Concord with the seacoast's Portsmouth, launching the town as the state's transportation and trade center. In 1807 Concord was connected to Boston by way of canal and in a few decades it would flourish as a hub for the railroad industry. Furniture making and quarrying granite from Rattlesnake Hill north of town were also drove the local economy. And the manufacture of carriages and coaches brought the town widespread notoriety.

But for more than 200 years Concord has been a government town. Homegrown Franklin Pierce was sent to Washington as the country's fourteenth President, giving New Hampshire the honor of being by far the smallest state to ever produce a United States President. Arkansas (Bill Clinton) and Iowa (Herbert Hoover) are the only other states outside the 20 most populous American states to send a favored son to the White House.

Our walking tour of Concord will begin in the heart of the Civic District at the very State House where Franklin Pierce served from 1829 until 1833, in America's oldest state house in which the legislature still occupies its original chambers...

Security An Inside Look at the Tactics of the NYPD【電子書籍】[ Howard Safir ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Security An Inside Look at the Tactics of the NYPD【電子書籍】[ Howard Safir ]

From counterterrorism to tracking criminals by satellite, Security gives an expert's tour of twenty-first-century law enforcement. Former NYPD commissioner Howard Safir reveals the tools, methods, and science that police officers use to reduce crime, and track and apprehend criminals, including surveillance, crime scene evidence, DNA profiling, narcotics, and quality-of-life enforcement.
With the dedication of 40,000 police officers, and using these tools, over the last four years of the Giuliani administration the NYPD under Safir was able to decrease the crime rate in New York City to a level not seen since the 1960s, with major crimes reduced by over a third and the murder rate cut almost in half. To illustrate the law enforcement successes in New York, Safir uses real-life crime stories to outline the tactics used by the Zodiac Killer; the investigation of Sante and Kenneth Kimes for the murder of socialite Irene Silverman; and the apprehension of the killers responsible for the massacre at a Wendy's in Queens. And Safir gives a behind-the-scenes look at some of the NYPD's more recent controversies, including the shooting of Amadou Diallo and the assault on Hatian immigrant Abner Louima.
But Security is more than a look into the inner workings of the NYPD. This book gives valuable insight into how methods of law enforcement are needed to prevent terrorism (drawing on the NYPD's experience catching two potential subway bombers), to protect our homeland (with a precise look at the USA Patriot Act and biometric technologies), and to keep our streets and homes safe (from Safir's Model Block Program, to CompStat, to the controversial yet successful Street Crime Unit).
In these troubling times of terror warnings and high alert levels, Security is a clear-eyed look at police tactics and an important citizen's guide to the role that law enforcement - on all levels - plays in our daily lives.

Police in Schools An Evidence-based Look at the Use of School Resource Officers【電子書籍】[ Linda Duxbury ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Police in Schools An Evidence-based Look at the Use of School Resource Officers【電子書籍】[ Linda Duxbury ]

This co-authored book critically reviews existing literature on school resource officer (SRO) programs and presents a thorough evaluation of an SRO program offered by Peel Regional Police in Ontario, Canada. The implementation of a SRO program is a controversial response to school violence and safety issues. While some call for an increased use of police in schools, others are pushing to remove police from schools, or at least to end their involvement in routine discipline. Though many SRO programs exist around the world, little systematic research has been conducted on the topic.

The study reported in this book represents the largest and most comprehensive assessment of such programs to date. The research by Duxbury and Bennell indicates that SRO programs can provide real value for students, school staff, policing organizations, and society, but benefits rely on having programs that are well-designed, that the right officers are selected for SRO roles, and that the initiative has support from major stakeholders. Given the current conversations regarding the costs and benefits of having police officers in schools, there is a clear need to determine the value that investment in these types of proactive policing programs creates.

The book provides researchers, SROs, police agencies, school boards, school administrators, teachers, parents, and students with information about: the activities that SROs are involved in, how SROs can collaborate with schools to create safe learning environments, and whether (and how) such programs benefit the police, schools, students, and society. Easy-to-digest charts facilitate understanding, and anonymized reflections from SROs, school staff, and students are presented throughout the book to provide context.

Do you ever wonder if people know the meaning of the words they speak? When you hear someone say they saw a bad ride, do they mean they saw a broken-down vehicle? Maybe the roller coaster at the amusement park wasnt operational. If you say your alarm is going off, is it making some audible alert to wake you, or is it having a temper tantrum? How do I really know what you mean? Many factors go into determining the meaning of words and phrases communicated to the listener. Knowing this, when I hear someone say they got saved, if I dont know their understanding of the term, I have to wonder what they mean. Here I try to explore what people mean when they use this common phrase heard in the Baptist churches of the American South. Airpower Against an Army: Challenge and Response in Central Command Air Forces (CENTAF) Duel with Republican Guard in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm, Unique Look at How the Guard Was Annihilated【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Airpower Against an Army: Challenge and Response in Central Command Air Forces (CENTAF) Duel with Republican Guard in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm, Unique Look at How the Guard Was Annihilated【電子書籍】[ Progressive Management ]

This excellent report has been professionally converted for accurate flowing-text e-book format reproduction. In January and February 1991, Central Command Air Forces (CENTAF) conducted an air-to-ground onslaught against Iraq's Republican Guard. The requirements of this operation conflicted in a number of respects with the US Air Force's extended preparations for conflict on a European battleground. A major case in point involved the low-altitude tactics CENTAF crews had practiced for the previous decade and a half, tactics that were manifestly unsuited for the task that confronted them in Iraq. Colonel Andrews's study, Airpower against an Army: Challenge and Response in CENTAF's Duel with the Republican Guard, examines how CENTAF adjusted air operations against the Republican Guard to meet the realities of combat. Initial F-16 and B-52 attacks on the Republican Guard met little success. In response, CENTAF instituted six significant tactical innovations in the space of one week: A-10 deep interdiction, A-10 reconnaissance, F-16 killer scout operations, F-16 forward basing, F-111 and F-15E tank plinking, and the use of cockpit videotape as a source for bomb damage assessment. These innovations required CENTAF aviators to create new tactics in the midst of combat operations. Quickly devised and implemented, these new tactics markedly improved CENTAF's effectiveness against the Republican Guard. Critically weakened by air attack, the two guard divisions that stood and fought were annihilated during the ground phase of Operation Desert Storm.

Only One Addiction Can Set You Free

Matt Papa was a "professional Christian" in full-time ministry, ready and determined to change the world. All the while he was depressed, addicted to the approval of others, and enslaved to sin. But then everything changed. He encountered the glory of God.

All of us live in the tension between where we are and where we ought to be. We try our best to bully our desires into submission. And we all know, this is exhausting.

Are you tired? Stuck? Still fighting the same sin you've been fighting for years? The call in these pages is not to work or to strive, but to lift your eyes. You don't need more willpower. You need a vision of greatness that sweeps you off your feet. You need to see glory.

Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Look and Live.

"Matt has helped me see that love for God grows out of an experience of beholding the love of God. We burn only as we behold. . . . This is a fantastic book and I commend it to you with the most enthusiastic support."--from the Foreword by J.D. Greear

"Matt Papa cares about the glory of God, and you can sense that zeal on every page of this dynamic book. He also cares about you and me getting to grips with that glory. . . . Look Up, Houston! A Walking Tour of Houston, Texas【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

A Walking Tour of Houston, Texas【電子書籍】[ Doug Gelbert ]

There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour from walkthetown.com is ready to explore when you are.

Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets.

It was a couple of sharp-eyed New Yorkers who made Houston, brothers Augustus Chaman and John Kirby Allen. Looking to cash in on the winning of Texas independence in 1836 the brothers came to the new country looking to start a port city upstream from the Galveston Bay. They first eyed land along the Buffalo Bayou that had been surveyed and laid out by John Richardson Harris a decade earlier but there was no clear title to the land to buy. Reluctantly the brothers sailed further inland and bought up land around the confluence of the White Oak Bayou and Buffalo Bayou.

There were plenty of obstacles for the brothers to overcome in launching their dream city. The land was muddy and infested with mosquitoes which, although it wasn't known at the time, was the cause of the region's constant plague of yellow fever. Buffalo Bayou was clogged with navigation-hindering roots and those roots sheltered menacing alligators. And the hamlet of Harrisburg still maintained the superior access to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Undaunted the Allen brothers started their town in 1837 and named it after the most popular man in Texas, Sam Houston, the general who had just won the Texas Revolution. They hired Gail Borden, a publisher who had supposedly coined the phrase "Remember the Alamo!" and who would invent condensed milk several decades later, to draw up a map of the proposed town. On the map of the proposed town were squares marked prominently for the national capitol and other government buildings. Meanwhile the Allens embarked on a publicity campaign for their new town in Eastern newspapers, painting a picture of a frontier Eden that did not exist.

And it worked. Houston was designated the seat of both the county and national government and population soared to more than 1,000 in its first year. The bayou was cleared, a dock built, Borden started a newspaper and theater troupes were performing in town. And then in 1839 President Mirabeau B. Lamar decided to move the Texas capital to Austin.

Many an early American town withered into irrelevance with the loss of its status as a capital. Houstonians had only to look a few miles to the east at Harrisburg that had once been the county seat and capital of Texas when it was a Mexican colony. Houston business leaders were determined not to suffer the same fate. A Chamber of Commerce was formed which actively lobbied to dig out a shipping channel, build a plank road and lobby for the construction of a railroad. The Civil War slammed the brakes of much of that development but afterwards progress resumed and by 1890 Houston was the railroad center of Texas. After a hurricane decimated Galveston on the Gulf Coast in 1900 investment moved inland and Houston was developed as a true deepwater port.

The economic face of the town was forever altered when the Spindletop salt dome oil field was tapped near Beaumont in 1901. Houston quickly became the energy capital of the world and a town that didn't even have 50,000 residents when the first gusher came in would have more than 2,000,000 a century later. A city growing that fast doesn't always have time to care for its relics from the past but our walking tour will seek out what remains and we will start where it all began in 1837...

In the Beginning God A Fresh Look at the Case for Original Monotheism【電子書籍】[ Winfried Corduan ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】In the Beginning God A Fresh Look at the Case for Original Monotheism【電子書籍】[ Winfried Corduan ]

Christians believe that religion began when God created human beings and revealed himself to them. But is there scholarly evidence for this belief?

In the nineteenth century academic world a stormy debate took shape over the origin of religion. Scholars explored the ancient languages of mythology and then considered evolutionary anthropology. A dominant view emerged that religion began with animism -- the reverent honoring of spirits -- and from there evolved into higher forms, from polytheism on to monotheism.

However, scholars Andrew Lang and Wilhem Schmidt contended there were cultures throughout the world -- pygmy people in Africa and Asia, certain Australian Aboriginal groups and Native American tribes -- that originated as monotheistic, acknowledging the existence of one supreme God who created the world and holds people accountable for living morally upright lives.

The debate wore on, and Schmidt, a member of the Catholic order and a priest, was accused (without evidence) of letting his faith interpret the facts. By the mid-twentieth century a silent consensus formed among scholars not to discuss the origin and evolution of religion any further. The discoveries of Lang and Schmidt have since been largely ignored.

However, the evidence on which these scholars based their conclusion of monotheism is still out there. In the Beginning God attempts to educate Christians about the debate on this topic, the facts that were accepted and those that were ignored, and the use to which Christians can put all of this material in making a case for the truth of Christianity.

Are You There God? Amidst the Darkness Look to the Light【電子書籍】[ Charisse Jones ]

Amidst the Darkness Look to the Light【電子書籍】[ Charisse Jones ]

“Are You There God” created to empower believers and yet believers that God is always present. In life we all have a journey to experience and story to share with others. Thus, God did not create us to walk this road alone. God desires to protect, provide, correct, and direct us, but we must recognize that He exist. We have to acknowledge that life is more than what is visible to our eyes and understand that an encounter with Jesus is both spiritual and tangible through God’s Word. “Are You There God” was birthed by reflecting on my experiences and wanting to share this with others to inspire and lead them to Christ! It’s a practical application of my life and biblical accounts, which helped me to see God. Those same experiences may be your story or different, but reflection on your life can help you see where God was and still is today. I hope that as I share my story with you, it will help you recognize, encounter, and embrace the living God who longs to be your lifelong partner. Jesus Christ never meant of us to experience life without Him and His companionship. God loves you so much that He gave His only Son (John 3:16 NIV) for your sins, for your present existence, and your future eternal salvation.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】You Are Not Your Own A Look at the Teaching of Scripture about the Personal Rights of the Believer【電子書籍】[ F. Wayne Mac Leod ]

"You are not your own." These are the words of the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 when he spoke to those who were being tempted by the immorality of the day.

In a time when the rights of the individual are often the centre of attention, we would do well to take a moment to evaluate our modern ideas in light of these words. Do we really have the right to do as we please? What does the Lordship of Christ mean for us and how we allow our lives to unfold?

This study takes the word of Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and compares them to the teaching of the rest of Scripture. Its purpose is to call us back to a Biblical perspective of our rights and privileges before the Lord God.
