Stalag Luft III The German Pow Camp That Inspired The Great Escape【電子書籍】[ Charles Messenger ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Stalag Luft III The German Pow Camp That Inspired The Great Escape【電子書籍】[ Charles Messenger ]

A pictorial history of the infamous, World War II Nazi POW camp for Allied soldiers made famous in Hollywood.

In early 1942, the Third Reich opened a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp for captured Allied airmen in Lower Silesia, now Poland. Called Stalag Luft III, the camp soon came to contain some of the most inventive escapers ever known.

The escapers were led by Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, codenamed "Big X." In March 1944, Bushell masterminded an attempt to smuggle hundreds of POWs down a tunnel built right under the noses of their guards. In fact, 76 Allied airmen clambered into the tunnel and only three made successful escapes.

This remarkable breakout would be immortalized in the classic Steve McQueen film, The Great Escape, in which the bravery of the men was rightly celebrated. Behind the scenes photographs from the film are included, along with rare photographs from wartime archives, in this definitive pictorial work on the most famous POW camp of World War II.

Hospitality has been practiced by the people of God dating back through the entire Old Testament (Consider Abraham and Lot). Today, many of those practices are still in place throughout much of the Middle East. God, however, has called the whole church to participate in Kingdom hospitality. In fact, it is an integral part of the culture of the Kingdom of God.

Kingdom hospitality encompasses much more than simply hosting people out of the kindness of our hearts. This book is a journey into the heart, attitude and mindset of the hospitality of God and the beginning of a life of Kingdom hospitality.

Through an exploration of Scripture, culture and calling, you'll discover the beauty of Kingdom hospitality and its importance in the expression of our Christian faith.

During 1945, the author found herself in the monsoon-drenched jungles of Assam, caring for soldiers in the China-Burma-India theater of war. Nothing in her training had prepared her for the tropical diseases or the thatched-roof hospital where men spat on the floor, rats were pervasive, and patients used handguns to chase gigantic cockroaches (and wereas likely to sell their medicine as swallow it).

The experience was made tolerable by Nurse Camp's romance with one of the airmen who flew the Hump, supplying O.S.S. troops behind Japanese lines and carrying General Joseph Stilwell's Chinese troops to fight the battle of North Burma. She accompanied her future husband on some of his missions. Based in part on letters she wrote to her parents, this is the poignant story of one nurse's experience in World War II.

The Enemy Within Never Did Without German and Japanese Prisoners of War At Camp Huntsville, Texas, 1942-1945【電子書籍】[ Dr. Jeffrey L. Littlejohn ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Enemy Within Never Did Without German and Japanese Prisoners of War At Camp Huntsville, Texas, 1942-1945【電子書籍】[ Dr. Jeffrey L. Littlejohn ]

Camp Huntsville was one of the first and largest POW camps constructed in America during World War II. Located roughly eight miles east of Huntsville, Texas, in Walker County, the camp was built in 1942 and opened for prisoners the following year. The camp served as a model site for POW installations across the country and set a high standard for the treatment of prisoners.

Between 1943 and 1945, the camp housed roughly 4,700 German POWs and experienced tense relations between incarcerated Nazi and anti-Nazi factions. Then, during the last months of the war, the American military selected Camp Huntsville as the home of its top-secret re-education program for Japanese POWs.

The irony of teaching Japanese prisoners about democracy and voting rights was not lost on African Americans in East Texas who faced disenfranchisement and racial segregation. Nevertheless, the camp did inspire some Japanese prisoners to support democratization of their home country when they returned to Japan after the war. Meanwhile, in this country, the US government sold Camp Huntsville to Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1946, and the site served as the school’s Country Campus through the mid-1950s.

“This long-overdue project is one I started working on decades ago but didn’t finish. It is gratifying to see the book come to fruition through the efforts of these two history professors. And what a job they’ve done!”ーPaul Ruffin, Director, TRP

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Louder Than the Lies Asian American Identity, Solidarity, and Self-Love【電子書籍】[ Ellie Yang Camp ]

A primer on racism that offers an intersectional, anti-racist, coalition-building view of Asian American identity.

"This is and will be a necessary and useful tool for generations to come." ーJenny Wang, author of Permission to Come Home

What does it mean to be Asian American? How does our racialization in the United States shape our lives and our worldviews? With candor and care, Ellie Yang Camp, a Taiwanese American educator, offers a set of ideas and frameworks to guide us toward a more nuanced understanding of these questions. Drawing on her experiences and observations from history, conversations with Asian American peers, and lessons derived from other people of color, Camp unpacks the confusing dynamics that underlie anti-Asian stigmas and stereotypes in the US. From the model minority myth to yellowface to anti-Blackness among Asian communities, Camp presses into hard questions and moments of discomfort, naming fears so that we might dispel them.

Key stories of resistance reveal the importance of solidarity, both among the diverse people under the Asian American umbrella and with all who are exploited by white supremacy. Acknowledging that racism is a system thrust upon us to control us, Camp fuels our boldness to challenge tropes, dismantle prejudices, and embrace self-determination as an act of radical liberation.

Tegan Alice Slone is struggling to survive in the forests of Southern Indiana when Emperial Police capture her and take her to a reeducation center. The year is 2084, and the president is a madman that the people are afraid to stand up to. He has ultimate power over them all and will not surrender it. He created the Proclamation about Others. Others are "anyone who is a nontaxpaying citizen or noncitizen" and are to be put into reeducation centers. It is also a well-known fact that anyone who doesn't agree with him is relocated to a reeducation center. Everyone knows that these are really concentration camps, and despite what the government says, no one's reeducation is ever complete. Tegan decides to use her faith to not only get herself through the struggles at the center where she has been incarcerated but to try to bring others to faith in Christ and His ever-present love. By getting people to cooperate and get along, she paints a target on her back with the higher-ups. Will she survive, or will she die trying to bring others to Christ?

The Camp Fire Girls Gender, Race, and American Girlhood, 1910?1980【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Helgren ]

As the twentieth century dawned, progressive educators established a national organization for adolescent girls to combat what they believed to be a crisis of girls’ education. A corollary to the Boy Scouts of America, founded just a few years earlier, the Camp Fire Girls became America’s first and, for two decades, most popular girls’ organization. Based on Protestant middle-class idealsーa regulatory model that reinforced hygiene, habit formation, hard work, and the idea that women related to the nation through serviceーthe Camp Fire Girls invented new concepts of American girlhood by inviting disabled girls, Black girls, immigrants, and Native Americans to join. Though this often meant a false sense of cultural universality, in the girls’ own hands membership was often profoundly empowering and provided marginalized girls spaces to explore the meaning of their own cultures in relation to changes taking place in twentieth-century America.

Through the lens of the Camp Fire Girls, Jennifer Helgren traces the changing meanings of girls’ citizenship in the cultural context of the twentieth century. Drawing on girls’ scrapbooks, photographs, letters, and oral history interviews, in addition to adult voices in organization publications and speeches, The Camp Fire Girls explores critical intersections of gender, race, class, nation, and disability.

Based on in-depth fieldwork, this book explores the experience of Somalis who grew up in Kakuma refugee camp, in Kenya, and are now young adults. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】We Prisoners of War Sixteen British Officers and Soldiers Speak from a German Prison Camp【電子書籍】[ Tracy Strong ]

We Prisoners of War: Sixteen British Officers and Soldiers Speak from a German Prison Camp, first published in 1941, is a collection of brief essays written by POWs held in Germany during the early days of World War II. As noted in the Preface: Two years after the outbreak of hostilities, more than four million men are prisoners of war. They are living behind barbed-wire fences in all parts of the world … What thoughts are in the minds of these captured men? We Prisoners of War is a partial answer to this question. These sixteen essays were originally submitted in an essay contest suggested by a Y.M.C.A. secretary who visits the camps regularly. They were not intended for publication or the eyes of the censor. Because of their unique insight into the minds of those facing despair "in a sea of stagnant idleness," they are being printed in the interest of the prisoners themselves.
Although these prisoners are shut in behind barbed wire in southern Germany, it is interesting to note the influence upon their thoughts of the life of the villages outside the wire. A bright carpet in a cottage, the visitors in the local beer garden, the glorious view of the Alps as seen through the barred windows, as well as the clanging of the church bells, the singing of the birds, and the memory of the young choirmaster, Mozart, who lived thereーthese are the prisoner's food for thought.

Politics of Innocence Hutu Identity, Conflict and Camp Life【電子書籍】[ Simon Turner ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Politics of Innocence Hutu Identity, Conflict and Camp Life【電子書籍】[ Simon Turner ]

Based on thorough ethnographic fieldwork in a refugee camp in Tanzania this book provides a rich account of the benevolent “disciplining mechanisms” of humanitarian agencies, led by the UNHCR, and of the situated, dynamic, indeterminate, and fluid nature of identity (re)construction in the camp. While the refugees are expected to behave as innocent, helpless victims, the question of victimhood among Burundian Hutu is increasingly challenged, following the 1993 massacres in Burundi and the Rwandan genocide. The book explores how different groups within the camp apply different strategies to cope with these issues and how the question of innocence and victimhood is itself imbued with ambiguity, as young men struggle to recuperate their masculinity and their political subjectivity.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Week in August 70 Years Changing Lives at a School Christian Camp【電子書籍】[ David Hawker ]

There’s a real sense of posterity and pride in A Week in August. Author David Hawker reflects on an institution established in 1951, in which he played an active role for decades and revisits later in life. The comparison between generations is a strong platform from which Hawker comments on changing times and attitudes. This perspective makes his ideas, and by association the goals of the camp itself, even more meaningful and vital - particularly in an age of spiritual ennui. By remembering this valuable fellowship in print, the camp enters the realms of posterity with a bright hope for the future. Remembered with fondness and the ever-present notion in that everything we experience can teach us something, this is a valuable work for future and past generations both.

Popular Culture【電子書籍】[ Helene A. Shugart ]

The rhetorical power of camp in American popular culture

Making Camp examines the rhetoric and conventions of “camp” in contemporary popular culture and the ways it both subverts and is co-opted by mainstream ideology and discourse, especially as it pertains to issues of gender and sexuality.

Camp has long been aligned with gay male culture and performance. Helene Shugart and Catherine Waggoner contend that camp in the popular mediaーwhether visual, dramatic, or musicalーis equally pervasive. While aesthetic and performative in nature, the authors argue that campーfemale camp in particularーis also highly political and that conventions of femininity and female sexuality are negotiated, if not always resisted, in female camp performances.

The authors draw on a wide range of references and figures representative of camp, both historical and contemporary, in presenting the evolution of female camp and its negotiation of gender, political, and identity issues. Antecedents such as Joan Crawford, Wonder Woman, Marilyn Monroe, and Pam Grier are discussed as archetypes for contemporary popular culture figuresーMacy Gray, Gwen Stefani, and the characters of Xena from Xena: Warrior Princess and Karen Walker from Will & Grace.

Shugart and Waggoner find that these and other female camp performances are liminal, occupying a space between conformity and resistance. The result is a study that demonstrates the prevalence of camp as a historical and evolving phenomenon in popular culture, its role as a site for the rupture of conventional notions of gender and sexuality, and how camp is configured in mainstream culture and in ways that resist its being reduced to merely a style.

Twelve railroad lines served west central Ohio around 1907 and were the lifeblood of the communities they ran through. Bellefontaine, Bradford, and Crestline became major terminals, and lesser known places like Dola, Ohio City, and Peoria also owe their existence to the iron horse. Around 300 depots served the west central region, with the earliest dating to the late 1840s. The depot was the center of activity in the smallest village to the largest city. Many of the depots no longer exist?victims of progress, nature, or neglect. Some survive as historical museums, various businesses, and residences; a few remain in railroad use. The proud history of railroading lives on in the restored depots at Bucyrus and Galion?two architectural gems of the Buckeye State. Railroad Depots of West Central Ohio shares a tale of the golden age of rail travel through vintage postcards and mid-20th-century photographs of selected depots and other railroad structures.

On the fortieth anniversary of the Camp David Accords, a groundbreaking new history that shows how Egyptian-Israeli peace ensured lasting Palestinian statelessness

For seventy years Israel has existed as a state, and for forty years it has honored a peace treaty with Egypt that is widely viewed as a triumph of U.S. diplomacy in the Middle East. Yet the Palestiniansーthe would-be beneficiaries of a vision for a comprehensive regional settlement that led to the Camp David Accords in 1978ーremain stateless to this day. How and why Palestinian statelessness persists are the central questions of Seth Anziska’s groundbreaking book, which explores the complex legacy of the agreement brokered by President Jimmy Carter.

Based on newly declassified international sources, Preventing Palestine charts the emergence of the Middle East peace process, including the establishment of a separate track to deal with the issue of Palestine. At the very start of this process, Anziska argues, Egyptian-Israeli peace came at the expense of the sovereignty of the Palestinians, whose aspirations for a homeland alongside Israel faced crippling challenges. With the introduction of the idea of restrictive autonomy, Israeli settlement expansion, and Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon, the chances for Palestinian statehood narrowed even further. The first Intifada in 1987 and the end of the Cold War brought new opportunities for a Palestinian state, but many players, refusing to see Palestinians as a nation or a people, continued to steer international diplomacy away from their cause.

Combining astute political analysis, extensive original research, and interviews with diplomats, military veterans, and communal leaders, Preventing Palestine offers a bold new interpretation of a highly charged struggle for self-determination.

Together in Manzanar The True Story of a Japanese Jewish Family in an American Concentration Camp【電子書籍】[ Tracy Slater ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Together in Manzanar The True Story of a Japanese Jewish Family in an American Concentration Camp【電子書籍】[ Tracy Slater ]

"A World War II homefront action that many Americans would like to forget." ー Kirkus Reviews
"This cinematic and propulsive family saga casts a riveting spotlight on an ignominious episode in U.S. history." ー Publishers Weekly
On a late March morning in the spring of 1942, Elaine Yoneda awoke to a series of terrible choices: between her family and freedom, her country and conscience, and her son and daughter.

She was the child of Russian Jewish immigrants and the wife of a Japanese American man. On this war-torn morning, she was also a mother desperate to keep her young mixed-race son from being sent to a US concentration camp. Manzanar, near Death Valley, was one of ten detention centers where our government would eventually imprison every person of Japanese descent along the West Coastーalien and citizen, old and young, healthy and sickーor, in the words of one official, anyone with even "one drop" of Japanese blood.

Elaine's husband Karl was already in Manzanar, but he planned to enlist as soon as the US Army would take him. The Yonedas were prominent labor and antifascist activists, and Karl was committed to fighting for what they had long cherished: equality, freedom, and democracy.

Yet when Karl went to war, their son Tommy, three years old and chronically ill, would be left alone in Manzanarーunless Elaine convinced the US government to imprison her as well.

The consequences of Elaine's choice did not end there: if she somehow found a way to force herself behind barbed wire with her husband and son, she would leave behind her white daughter from a previous marriage.

Together in Manzanar tells the story of these painful choices and conflicting loyalties, the upheaval and violence that followed, and the Yonedas' quest to survive with their children's lives intact and their family safe and whole.

Railroad Depots of Northwest Ohio【電子書籍】[ Mark J. Camp ]

Chartered as early as 1832, Northwestern Ohio railroads were among the first in the Midwest. Toledo, a rapidly developing lake port at the mouth of the Maumee River, was the destination point for many lines; others were just passing through on their way to Chicago and points west. By 1907, 20 lines served the northwestern counties. All had a series of stations along their lines, often with depots or other railroad structures. Although many have come and gone, Northwest Ohio was once home to over 250 passenger or combination depots serving the traveling public. Railroad Depots of Northwest Ohio relives the golden age of railroad travel through vintage postcards and mid-20th century photos of selected depots and related structures.

Camp Cooke and Vandenberg Air Force Base, 1941-1966 From Armor and Infantry Training to Space and Missile Launches【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey E. Geiger ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Camp Cooke and Vandenberg Air Force Base, 1941-1966 From Armor and Infantry Training to Space and Missile Launches【電子書籍】[ Jeffrey E. Geiger ]

America's first West Coast armored and infantry training installation was built in California in 1941 and named Camp Cooke. It is currently known as Vandenberg Space Force Base. During WWII, more than 400 military units trained at Cooke, peaking at more than 36,000 soldiers. The largest units that rotated through Cooke were the 5th, 6th, 11th, 13th, and 20th Armored Divisions and the 86th and 97th Infantry Divisions. Having honed their fighting skills at Cooke, they prevailed in fierce battles across France and Germany. The 6th, 11th, and 20th Armored Divisions also took part in the liberation of Nazi concentration camps at Buchenwald, Mauthausen, and Dachau, respectively. Camp Cooke also included a large compound for German prisoners of war.

This book takes the reader through the war years in a series of notable events transpiring at Cooke and on the war front. It follows a similar path in discussing the Korean War. Two National Guard infantry divisions, the 40th from California and the 44th from Illinois were the largest units at Cooke during the war. Dozens of smaller organizations also rotated through Camp Cooke. During both conflicts, visiting USO shows at Cooke featured some of the most popular celebrities and entertainers of the day, including Bob Hope, Bette Davis, the Three Stooges, Susan Hayward, Kay Kaiser, Louie Armstrong, Dorothy Lamour, Orson Welles, Sammy Davis Jr., Joe DiMaggio, world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, and many more.

In 1957, Cooke was transferred to the Air Force and a year later renamed Vandenberg AFB. In 1959, the first Atlas ICBM missiles, equipped with nuclear warheads, were placed on alert at Vandenberg. That same year, America's first reconnaissance (spy) satellite was launched from the base. Known as Corona, it used the cover name Discoverer to conceal its true mission. In discussing early launch programs, the book reveals several significant accidents and successes. It also discusses President Kennedy's visit to the base and the humorous story of Russian Premier Khrushchev's train ride past the base and across America, which almost ended in a diplomatic incident.

The book's military theme encompasses more than 80 years of American history and spotlights California's inextricable role in world events. Through hot wars and a cold war, it is a story about ordinary people performing extraordinary services for their country and fellow countrymen during those momentous times.

Distance from the Belsen Heap Allied Forces and the Liberation of a Nazi Concentration Camp【電子書籍】[ Mark Celinscak ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Distance from the Belsen Heap Allied Forces and the Liberation of a Nazi Concentration Camp【電子書籍】[ Mark Celinscak ]

Winner of the 2016 Vine Award for Nonfiction

The Allied soldiers who liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen in April 1945 were faced with scenes of horror and privation. With breathtaking thoroughness, Distance from the Belsen Heap documents what they saw and how they came to terms with those images over the course of the next seventy years. On the basis of research in more than seventy archives in four countries, Mark Celinscak analyses how these military personnel struggled with the intense experience of the camp; how they attempted to describe what they had seen, heard, and felt to those back home; and how their lives were transformed by that experience. He also brings to light the previously unacknowledged presence of hundreds of Canadians among the camp’s liberators, including noted painter Alex Colville.

Distance from the Belsen Heap examines the experiences of hundreds of British and Canadian eyewitnesses to atrocity, including war artists, photographers, medical personnel, and chaplains. A study of the complicated encounter between these Allied soldiers and the horrors of the Holocaust, Distance from the Belsen Heap is a testament to their experience.
