A History of the Dora Camp The Untold Story of the Nazi Slave Labor Camp That Secretly Manufactured V-2 Rockets【電子書籍】[ Andre Sellier ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A History of the Dora Camp The Untold Story of the Nazi Slave Labor Camp That Secretly Manufactured V-2 Rockets【電子書籍】[ Andre Sellier ]

In mid-1943 Nazi Germany entered a crisis from which it was to emerge vanquished. Faced with a shortage of manpower in armaments factories, the Third Reich sent concentration camp prisoners to work as slaves. While the genocide of the Jews and the Gypsies continued at extermination camps, numerous outside "Kommandos" were set up in the vicinity of the large concentration camps. The Dora Camp, located in the center of Germany, was one of the most notorious. Originally a mere Kommando attached to Buchenwald, it became one of the largest Nazi concentration camps. There prisoners were put to work in a huge underground factory, building V-2 rockets, the secret weapon developed by German scientists in an attempt to reverse the course of the war, under the direction of Wernher von Braun. In this dispassionate but powerful account, Andr? Sellier, himself a former prisoner at Dora, tells the dramatic story of the camp, the tunnel factory, and the underground work sites. He has utilized all available documents as well as unpublished testimony from several dozen fellow prisoners. He recounts the horrors of everyday life at Doraーprisoners dying by the hundreds and indescribable sufferingーand the murderous "evacuation" of the camp by railroad convoys and death marches, which took place in early 1945 and led to the death of thousands of prisoners. Illustrated with 20 pages of photographs and drawings, and 24 maps.

Rohingya Camp Narratives Tales From the ‘Lesser Roads’ Traveled【

This book presents thirteen chapters which probe the “tales less told” and “pathways less traveled” in refugee camp living. Rohingya camps in Bangladesh since August 2017 supply these “tales” and “pathways”. They dwell upon/reflect camp violence, sexual/gender discrimination, intersectionality, justice, the sudden COVID camp entry, human security, children education, innovation, and relocation plans. Built largely upon field trips, these narratives interestingly interweave with both theoretical threads (hypotheses) and tapestries (net-effects), feeding into the security-driven pulls of political realism, or disseminating from humanitarian-driven socioeconomic pushes, but mostly combining them. Post-ethnic cleansing and post-exodus windows open up a murky future for Rohingya and global refugees. We learn of positive offshoots (of camp innovations exposing civil society relevance) and negative (like human and sex trafficking beyond Bangladeshi and Myanmar borders), as of navigating (a) local?global linkages of every dynamic and (b) fast-moving current circumstances against stoic historical leftovers.

The Prisoners Of Breendonk Personal Histories from a World War II Concentration Camp【電子書籍】[ James M. Deem ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Prisoners Of Breendonk Personal Histories from a World War II Concentration Camp【電子書籍】[ James M. Deem ]

Fort Breendonk was built in the early 1900s to protect Antwerp, Belgium, from possible German invasion. Damaged at the start of World War I, it fell into disrepair . . . until the Nazis took it over after their invasion of Belgium in 1940. Never designated an official concentration camp by the SS and instead labeled a "reception" camp where prisoners were held until they were either released or transported, Breendonk was no less brutal. About 3,600 prisoners were held thereーjust over half of them survived. As one prisoner put it, "I would prefer to spend nineteen months at Buchenwald than nineteen days at Breendonk."

With access to the camp and its archives and with rare photos and artwork, James M. Deem pieces together the story of the camp by telling the stories of its victimsーJews, communists, resistance fighters, and common criminalsーfor the first time in an English-language publication. Leon Nolis's haunting photography of the camp today accompanies the wide range of archival images.

The story of Breendonk is one you will never forget.

The History of a Forgotten German Camp Nazi Ideology and Genocide at Szmalc?wka【電子書籍】[ Tomasz Ceran ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The History of a Forgotten German Camp Nazi Ideology and Genocide at Szmalc?wka【電子書籍】[ Tomasz Ceran ]

Although often overlooked, anti-Polish sentiment was central to Nazi ideology. At the outset of World War II, Hitler initiated a process of 'depolonization' (Entpolonisierung) which resulted in the death or displacement of a significant number of Polish people living in Nazi-occupied territories. By examining policies of indirect extermination through a detailed study of Szmalcowka, a 'displacement' camp located in Toru? in Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia, Tomasz Ceran explores the terrible consequences of Nazi ideology. He provides both an in-depth historical account of a little-known camp and an important analysis of Nazi practices and policy-making in the Polish territories which were annexed. A strong addition to World War II literature, Ceran's book is essential reading for scholars and students interested in World War II, Polish History, Nazi ideology and the nature of violence and resilience.

Surviving a Japanese Internment Camp Life and Liberation at Santo Tomas, Manila, in World War II【電子書籍】[ Rupert Wilkinson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Surviving a Japanese Internment Camp Life and Liberation at Santo Tomas, Manila, in World War II【電子書籍】[ Rupert Wilkinson ]

During World War II the Japanese imprisoned more American civilians at Manila's Santo Tomas prison camp than anywhere else, along with British and other nationalities. Placing the camp's story in the wider history of the Pacific war, this book tells how the camp went through a drastic change, from good conditions in the early days to impending mass starvation, before its dramatic rescue by U.S. Army "flying columns." Interned as a small boy with his mother and older sister, the author shows the many ways in which the camp's internees handled imprisonment--and their liberation afterwards.

Using a wealth of Santo Tomas memoirs and diaries, plus interviews with other ex-internees and veteran army liberators, he reveals how children reinvented their own society, while adults coped with crowded dormitories, evaded sex restrictions, smuggled in food, and through a strong internee government, dealt with their Japanese overlords. The text explores the attitudes and behavior of Japanese officials, ranging from sadistic cruelty to humane cooperation, and asks philosophical questions about atrocity and moral responsibility.

Sobibor A History of a Nazi Death Camp【電子書籍】[ Jules Schelvis ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Sobibor A History of a Nazi Death Camp【電子書籍】[ Jules Schelvis ]

Auschwitz. Treblinka. The very names of these Nazi camps evoke unspeakable cruelty. Sobib?r is less well known, and this book discloses the horrors perpetrated there.Established in German-occupied Poland, the camp at Sobib?r began its dreadful killing operation in May 1942. By October 1943, approximately 167,000 people had been murdered there. Sobib?r is not well documented and, were it not for an extraordinary revolt on 14 October 1943, we would know little about it. On that day, prisoners staged a remarkable uprising in which 300 men and women escaped. The author identifies only forty-seven who survived the war.Sent in June 1943 to Sobib?r, where his wife and family were murdered, Jules Schelvis has written the first book-length, fully documented account of the camp. He details the creation of the killing centre, its personnel, the use of railways, selections, forced labour, gas chambers, escape attempts and the historic uprising. In documenting this part of Holocaust history, this compelling and well-researched account advances our knowledge and understanding of the Nazi attempt to annihilate the European Jews.Published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Occupied Refuge Humanitarian Colonization and the Camp in Kenya【電子書籍】[ Hanno Brankamp ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Occupied Refuge Humanitarian Colonization and the Camp in Kenya【電子書籍】[ Hanno Brankamp ]

In a world shaped by war, climate disaster, and displacement, refugee camps are imagined as indispensable safe havens for millions of people fleeing crises. In Occupied Refuge, Hanno Brankamp challenges the presumed innocence of refugee humanitarianism as a system of civilian protection that can manage global inequalities and forced migration by peaceful means. He shows that although humanitarian missions aim to protect displaced populations in the global South, they often function as militarized occupations that treat camp inhabitants as new colonized subjects. Through ethnographic research in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, Brankamp demonstrates how aid operations rely on a combination of infrastructural expansion, militarized policing, ethno-racial subjugation, indirect rule, and economic extraction. By co-managing these camps with international aid agencies, the Kenyan state becomes not only a willing accomplice in planetary humanitarian containment but seeks to pacify its own peripheral territories, securitize unwanted migrants, and impose national rule. Illuminating how refugee camps serve as key sites where carceral protectionism, postcolonial nation-building, and global mobility control intersect, Brankamp calls for abolitionist futures beyond the violent structures of encampment, borders, and citizenship.

In addition to the atrocities committed by the gestapo against the Jews, thousands of Christians were also arrested and enslaved in German work camps. In 1944, while on a train from Cracow, Poland, to Vienna, Austria, Rev. Vladimir Husaruk was arrested for being a "religious agitator." He was carrying a suitcase with fifty-two New Testaments to distribute to Slavic Christians who had been arrested and enslaved by the German gestapo. He spent the remainder of WWII in two prisons, including Montelupich, known for its tortures and executions, and two Nazi concentration camps, Gross-Rosen and Hersbruck, before being released by American soldiers in April 1945. Home Feelings Liberal Citizenship and the Canadian Reading Camp Movement【電子書籍】[ Jody Mason ]

Literature, literacy, and citizenship took on new and contested meanings in early twentieth-century Canada, particularly in frontier work camps. In this critical history of the reading camp movement, Jody Mason undertakes the first sustained analysis of the organization that became Frontier College in 1919.

Employing an interdisciplinary approach, Home Feelings investigates how the reading camp movement used fiction, poetry, songs, newspapers, magazines, school readers, and English-as-a-second-language and citizenship manuals to encourage ideas of selfhood that were individual and intimate rather than collective. Mason shows that British-Canadian settlers' desire to define themselves in relation to an expanding non-British immigrant population, as well as a need for immigrant labour, put new pressure on the concept of citizenship in the first decades of the twentieth century. Through the Frontier College, one of the nation's earliest citizenship education programs emerged, drawing on literature's potential to nourish "home feelings" as a means of engaging socialist and communist print cultures and the non-British immigrant communities with which these were associated.

Shifting the focus away from urban centres and postwar state narratives of citizenship, Home Feelings tracks the importance of reading projects and conceptions of literacy to the emergence of liberal citizenship in Canada prior to the Second World War.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Guests of the Emperor The Secret History of Japan's Mukden POW Camp【電子書籍】[ Estate of Linda Goetz Holmes ]

The one unresolved issue of the Pacific War is the treatment of our prisoners of war, during and after World War II, both by the Japanese and by our own government. Never before in our military history have so many Americans, military and civilian, been taken captive by an enemy at one time. It was a triumph for the Japanese, and an embarrassment to our own government. Over 36,000 men, mostly military but some civilian, were thrown into Japanese military POW camps, forced to labor for companies working to meet quotas for Japan's war effort. Guests of the Emperor takes you inside the largest fixed military prison camp in the Japanese Empire: Mitsubishi's huge factory complex at Mukden, Manchuria, where 1,200 American prisoners were subjected to brutal cold, starvation, beatings, medical experiments and an extremely high death rate while being forced to help manufacture parts for Mitsubishi's Zero fighter planes. This book is the first to reveal conclusively that some Americans at Mukden were singled out for medical experiments by Japan's biological warfare team, the infamous Unit 731, located just a few hundred miles from this camp. Nowhere else did American prisoners despise their officers so much; commit more creative sabotage; survive such brutal cold; endure death by friendly fire; and require the combined efforts of an OSS rescue team and special recovery unit, to come home alive. Anyone who wants to know more about the Pacific War, with all its contradictions and deceptions, will want to read The Manchurian Mystery.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Incarcerating the Crisis Freedom Struggles and the Rise of the Neoliberal State【電子書籍】[ Jordan T. Camp ]

The United States currently has the largest prison population on the planet. Over the last four decades, structural unemployment, concentrated urban poverty, and mass homelessness have also become permanent features of the political economy. These developments are without historical precedent, but not without historical explanation. In this searing critique, Jordan T. Camp traces the rise of the neoliberal carceral state through a series of turning points in U.S. history including the Watts insurrection in 1965, the Detroit rebellion in 1967, the Attica uprising in 1971, the Los Angeles revolt in 1992, and events in post-Katrina New Orleans in 2005. Incarcerating the Crisis argues that these dramatic events coincided with the emergence of neoliberal capitalism and the state’s attempts to crush radical social movements. Through an examination of the poetic visions of social movementsーincluding those by James Baldwin, Marvin Gaye, June Jordan, Jos? Ram?rez, and Sunni Pattersonーit also suggests that alternative outcomes have been and continue to be possible.

Situated between Atlanta and Athens, Walton County has always been a stronghold of the cotton industry. While some of the largest cotton crops in the world have emerged from its fertile fields, a strong community and storied history have come to define the county. Recognized as the site of America's last mass-lynching at Moore's Ford in 1946, Walton County has been a focal point of national attention, sparking changes that have contributed to the nation's Civil Rights movement. But it is not only this tragedy that has given Walton County a sense of identity.
Teresa’s son was one of the many Italian Military Internees (IMI), the Italian soldiers who, after the armistice of 8 September 1943, refused to side with the Republic of Sal? and Hitler and were subsequently deported to the Third Reich and German-occupied territories where they were forced to work in Nazi labour camps.
When Mamma Teresa learns of her son’s death, she is utterly grief-stricken. But her greatest suffering comes from not knowing where he was buried. It takes her five long years to obtain the necessary documents to travel abroad in search of his grave. But this is just the beginning of her ordeal. Setting off from Bova di Marrara, near Ferrara in northern Italy, she makes her way to Germany, all alone, without knowing a word of German and with very little money. The journey is long and arduous and Teresa records the experience in a diary, producing a unique and exceptional testimony. Decades later, Teresa’s relatives dig out that same diary from an attic and hand it to the author, who thus inherits her memories.
“A memorial to my poor son and to everything that his mamma did for him, because only a mother could do this for her son and I did it out of immense love.”
(From the diary of Mamma Teresa Zerbini n?e Mascellani)

Allies in Auschwitz The Untold Story of British POWs Held Captive in the Nazis' Most Infamous Death Camp【電子書籍】[ Duncan Little ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Allies in Auschwitz The Untold Story of British POWs Held Captive in the Nazis' Most Infamous Death Camp【電子書籍】[ Duncan Little ]

The huge Auschwitz camp in Poland, the Third Reich's most gruesome death camp, contained not only the infamous concentration camp - whose horrors are well-documented - but also a prisoner-of-war facility that housed British inmates. Situated close enough to the Jewish quarters to smell the stench of burning bodies from the crematoria, the POWs were forced to work alongside concentration camp inmates in a Nazi factory. Witnesses to daily violence, the men survived beatings, hard labour and the extreme cold of Polish winters, whilst subsisting on meagre rations. Their final ordeal was to march hundreds of miles, in the depths of winter, to secure freedom in the spring of 1945. Based on interviews with some of the few surviving members of E715 Auschwitz, this book charts the British captives' true story: from arriving on cattle trucks through to their eventual departure on foot. Haunted by what they had witnessed as young men, Brian Bishop, Doug Bond and Arthur Gifford-England were only able to speak about their experiences decades later, when approached during research for this book. Few people were interested in these remarkable men in post-war Britain, and they were left to cope with the trauma of their experiences with little support. Allies in Auschwitz records an important and forgotten episode of modern history. As corroboration of the men's testimony, the final chapter includes post-war accounts from other British POWs held in E715 Auschwitz, based on documents compiled by war crimes' investigators for the Nuremburg Trials.

The Rise and Fall of America's Concentration Camp Law Civil Liberties Debates from the Internment to McCarthyism and the Radical 1960s【電子書籍】[ Masumi Izumi ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Rise and Fall of America's Concentration Camp Law Civil Liberties Debates from the Internment to McCarthyism and the Radical 1960s【電子書籍】[ Masumi Izumi ]

The Emergency Detention Act, Title II of the Internal Security Act of 1950, is the only law in American history to legalize preventive detention. It restricted the freedom of a certain individual or a group of individuals based on actions that may be taken that would threaten the security of a nation or of a particular area. Yet the Act was never enforced before it was repealed in 1971.

Masumi Izumi links the Emergency Detention Act with Japanese American wartime incarceration in her cogent study, The Rise and Fall of America’s Concentration Camp Law. She dissects the entangled discourses of race, national security, and civil liberties between 1941 and 1971 by examining how this historical precedent generated “the concentration camp law” and expanded a ubiquitous regime of surveillance in McCarthyist America.

Izumi also shows how political radicalism grew as a result of these laws. Japanese Americas were instrumental in forming grassroots social movements that worked to repeal Title II. The Rise and Fall of America’s Concentration Camp Law is a timely study in this age of insecurity where issues of immigration, race, and exclusion persist.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Camp Creek Train Crash of 1900: In Atlanta or In Hell【電子書籍】[ Jeffery C. Wells ]

On June 23, 1900, the Southern Railroad Company's Engine #7 and its passengers were greeted by a tremendous storm en route to Atlanta, Georgia. Stalled for some time in nearby McDonough, travelers grew impatient as rain pelted the roof and wind buffeted the cars. When finally given the go-ahead, their resulting joy was short-lived: the locomotive soon reached Camp Creek--and disaster. After weeks of constant showers, the swollen creek had eroded the bridge supports. Under the train's weight, the bridge collapsed, and all but nine perished in either the fiery fall or watery depths. With the help of local newspapers and eyewitness accounts, Georgia historian and professor Jeffery C. Wells recounts this tragic tale.

The CCC Chronicles Camp Newspapers of the Civilian Conservation Corps, 1933-1942【電子書籍】[ Alfred Emile Cornebise ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The CCC Chronicles Camp Newspapers of the Civilian Conservation Corps, 1933-1942【電子書籍】[ Alfred Emile Cornebise ]

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt founded the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, newspapers relating to the organization were launched almost immediately. Happy Days, the semi-official newspaper of the CCC, and other such publications served as soundings boards for opinions among the CCC enrollees, encouraged and instructed the men as they assumed their new roles, and generally supported the aims of Roosevelt's New Deal program. Happy Days also encouraged and instructed editors in the production of camp newspapers--well over 5,000 were published by almost 3,000 of the CCC companies from 1933 to 1942.

This book considers all phases of life in the CCC throughout its existence from various perspectives, and analyzes the history of CCC camp journalism. As the author points out, the CCC newspapers were and still are significant because they provide readers with a look at American life--socially, politically, culturally and militarily--during the Great Depression. It also focuses on how Happy Days and other newspapers were created and distributed, who wrote for them, and what they contained.
