Soldiers of the Short Grass A History of the Curragh Camp【電子書籍】[ Dan Harvey ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Soldiers of the Short Grass A History of the Curragh Camp【電子書籍】[ Dan Harvey ]

This is the first complete history of the Curragh Camp, from its foundation in 1855 to the present day, under both British and Irish occupation. Dan Harvey, a military historian and an experienced senior officer, presents a compelling and fascinating narrative of the camp’s many evocative eras and episodes. This unique establishment has been key in shaping Irish history while being shaped in turn by the great national and international conflicts that it was founded to respond to: the Crimean War, the Boer War, the Great War, the Easter Rising and War of Independence are all accounted for under the banner of the British Army. The first tricolour hoisted overhead of the camp signalled no change to its level of service as the Curragh’s forces were quickly embroiled in the Irish Civil War, later oversaw the years of the modern Troubles, and forged an international role with the Irish Defence Forces.

These grand narratives are interlaced with smaller yet significant tales that personalise the institution and lend vitality to the many facets that keep service, work, and a livelihood in check on world-renowned plains once covered by ‘St. Brigid’s cloak’. Prince Edward’s royal visit and training, and the ‘Wrens’ less welcome visits to the soldiers after dark ? everyday and extraordinary matters are described to give the most authoritative history, compelling and meticulously written, of a camp inextricable to Ireland for over one hundred and fifty years

STORY OF THE CAMPAIGN OF SEBASTOPOL: Written In The Camp [Illustrated Edition]【電子書籍】[ Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Bruce Hamley KCB KCMG ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】STORY OF THE CAMPAIGN OF SEBASTOPOL: Written In The Camp [Illustrated Edition]【電子書籍】[ Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Bruce Hamley KCB KCMG ]

[Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War]
"Eyewitness account of the fighting during the Crimean War.
"While I was delivering the order, a round shot passed through my horse, close to the saddle, and rolled us over; while on the ground another canon shot passed through him. A sergeant of artillery ran to extricate me; he had just lifted from under the horse, and I was in the act of steadying myself on his shoulder, when a shot carried off his thigh and he fell back on me....This is a scene describes a narrow escape for Hamley during the bloody battle of Inkerman. The author of this remarkable book, a Gunner officer, served on the Artillery Staff, first as Adjutant to the First Division field artillery and then as ADC to the Commander Royal Artillery throughout the siege of Sevastopol, and as such he was well placed to make this record of the campaign. As he says in the introduction it was not his intention to indulge in fanciful rhetoric but to give a 'round, unvarnished tale.' All was written in camp when he was off duty, in a tent or in a hut, and his descriptions of the fighting and the aftermath paint a grim and often gruesome picture. Disease and sickness ravaged the army; in Dec. 1854 and Jan. 1855 the sick returns amounted to 14,000. The pictures he paints, in his matter-of-fact narrative, reflect some appalling sights of the dead and dying on the battlefields. He takes us through the Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava to the fall of Sevastopol in Sep. 1855 which was the prelude to the peace talks a few months later. The siege of Sevastopol lasted a year and cost the British some 11,000 casualties, the French 12,000 and the Russians 50,000. There are some very good illustrations by the author himself. For the students of this dreadfully mishandled war (administration, logistics and medical) this book will be compulsive reading."-Print Ed.

The general background of the groups investigated The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the severe psychic and physical stress situations to which human beings were exposed in the concentration camps of World ¥Var II have had lasting psychological results, to discover the nature of these conditions and the symptomatology they present, and finally to investigate which detailed factors of the above-mentioned stress situation can be con sidered decisive for the morbid conditions which were revealed. In order to elucidate these questions from different points of view, I have examined groups of former concentration camp inmates both in Norway and Israel. The Norwegians who were examined compose a fairly uniform group of men and women, born and bred in Norway, who after the War naturally returned to their native country. The Israeli groups which were examined were drawn from almost every country in Europe that had been under German occupation during World War II. They had all immigrated into Israel, mostly after 1948.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Lieutenant General Edward A. Craig Warrior Six: Combat Leader in World War II and Korea【電子書籍】[ Richard D. Camp ]

The amazing life of one of the Marine Corps' premier combat leaders in World War II and Korea.
Marine Lieutenant General Edward A. Craig served in the Corps from 1917 until 1951. He was one of the "old Corps" Marines, serving in the Banana Wars, World War II where he was commanding officer, 9th Marine Regiment, Bougainville and Guam, and Korea, where he led the "Fire Brigade" which many historians attribute to having saved the Pusan Perimeter, enabling the U.S. and her allies to save South Korea. He was also instrumental in making the amphibious landing at Inchon successful. Craig was considered one of the premier combat leaders in the Marine Corps. Marine historian Dick Camp knew Craig personally and has woven Craig's own account of his service into context. Craig's recollections are more than recitations of facts, his account of leading in World War II provides the perspective of a combat leader balancing the mission objectives with responsibility for the men he leads. His account of fighting during the Korean War section provides insight into how unprepared the United States was and how a determined, well-led Marine brigade was able to stop the North Korean advance and prevent them from overrunning South Korea.

Nitzotz The Spark of Resistance in Kovno Ghetto and Dachau-Kaufering Concentration Camp【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Nitzotz The Spark of Resistance in Kovno Ghetto and Dachau-Kaufering Concentration Camp【電子書籍】

Under the brutal conditions of the Dachau-Kaufering concentration camp, a handful of young Jews resolved to resist their Nazi oppressors. Their weapons were their words. During the Soviet occupation of Kovno and, after the German invasion, within the Kovno ghetto, the members of Irgun Brith Zion circulated an underground journal, Nitzotz (Spark). In its pages, they debated Zionist politics and laid plans for postwar settlement in Palestine. When the Kovno ghetto was liquidated, several contributors to Nitzotz were deported to the Kaufering satellite camps of Dachau. Against all odds, they did not lay down their pens.

Nitzotz is the only Hebrew-language publication known to have appeared consistently throughout the Nazi occupation anywhere in Europe. Its authors believed that their intellectual defiance would insulate them against the dehumanizing cruelty of the concentration camp and equip them to lead the postwar effort for the physical and spiritual regeneration of European Jewry. Laura Weinrib presents this remarkable document to English readers for the first time. Along with a translation of the five remaining Dachau-Kaufering issues, the book includes an extensive critical introduction. Nitzotz is a testament to the resilience of those struggling for survival.

Since the Camp David agreements of September 1978, the Middle East has experienced a series of major military and political developments that have affected not just the nations of the region and the two superpowers, but the rest of the world as well. The fall of the Shah of Iran, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Iraqi invasion of Iran, the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and the Israeli invasion of Lebanonーto name only a few eventsーhave had a major impact. In this volume, a group of internationally recognized scholars, many of whom are present and former U.S. government officials, analyze these Middle Eastern developments from the perspectives of the superpowers, the region in general, and the five major actors during this period (Egypt, Israel, the PLO, Syria, and Iran). Although the individual authors speak from differing perspectives and viewpoints in their analyses, the book as a whole presents a balanced examination of the key developments in the volatile Middle East since Camp David.

"THE reasons which induced me to publish the present work are briefly these: My father was a Boulonnais, and owner of the land historically famous for its associations with Bonaparte and Bruix. I have therefore in my possession a number of documents, hitherto unpublished, concerning the Camp of Boulogne.
"Besides this, during the many years spent on my father's property at the Plateau d'Odre, I have had many opportunities of acquiring information and collecting circumstantial evidence on the spot itself, from old men who had seen and talked with Napoleon, and had served under him.
"When writing these pages, in full view of the splendid panorama of the Boulogne roadstead, and from the top of the very cliff on which Napoleon and the Commander of the Flotilla had once taken up their quarters, I could not help thinking that the narrative of former events and of memorable incidents would certainly be of psychological interest to the public.
"Added to this, it seemed to me that a faithful record of typical details connected with Napoleon's Camp at Boulogne, might even prove a useful contribution to the military history of that period, in which the extraordinary and fertile activity of Napoleonーseconded by the ardour, so typical, of his soldiers and sailorsーhad inspired England with fear, and served to organise an incomparable army."

Closer to Freedom Enslaved Women and Everyday Resistance in the Plantation South【電子書籍】[ Stephanie M. H. Camp ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Closer to Freedom Enslaved Women and Everyday Resistance in the Plantation South【電子書籍】[ Stephanie M. H. Camp ]

Recent scholarship on slavery has explored the lives of enslaved people beyond the watchful eye of their masters. Building on this work and the study of space, social relations, gender, and power in the Old South, Stephanie Camp examines the everyday containment and movement of enslaved men and, especially, enslaved women. In her investigation of the movement of bodies, objects, and information, Camp extends our recognition of slave resistance into new arenas and reveals an important and hidden culture of opposition.

Camp discusses the multiple dimensions to acts of resistance that might otherwise appear to be little more than fits of temper. She brings new depth to our understanding of the lives of enslaved women, whose bodies and homes were inevitably political arenas. Through Camp's insight, truancy becomes an act of pursuing personal privacy. Illegal parties ("frolics") become an expression of bodily freedom. And bondwomen who acquired printed abolitionist materials and posted them on the walls of their slave cabins (even if they could not read them) become the subtle agitators who inspire more overt acts.

The culture of opposition created by enslaved women's acts of everyday resistance helped foment and sustain the more visible resistance of men in their individual acts of running away and in the collective action of slave revolts. Ultimately, Camp argues, the Civil War years saw revolutionary change that had been in the making for decades.

Migrant Citizenship Race, Rights, and Reform in the U.S. Farm Labor Camp Program【電子書籍】[ Ver?nica Mart?nez-Matsuda ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Migrant Citizenship Race, Rights, and Reform in the U.S. Farm Labor Camp Program【電子書籍】[ Ver?nica Mart?nez-Matsuda ]

An examination of the Farm Security Administration's migrant camp system and the people it served

Today's concern for the quality of the produce on our plates has done little to guarantee U.S. farmworkers the necessary protections of sanitary housing, medical attention, and fair labor standards. The political discourse on farmworkers' rights is dominated by the view that migrant workers are not entitled to better protections because they are "noncitizens," as either immigrants or transients. Between 1935 and 1946, however, the Farm Security Administration (FSA) intervened dramatically on behalf of migrant families to expand the principles of American democracy, advance migrants' civil rights, and make farmworkers visible beyond their economic role as temporary laborers. In more than one hundred labor camps across the country, migrant families successfully worked with FSA officials to challenge their exclusion from the basic rights afforded by the New Deal.

In Migrant Citizenship, Ver?nica Mart?nez-Matsuda examines the history of the FSA's Migratory Labor Camp Program and its role in the lives of diverse farmworker families across the United States, describing how the camps provided migrants sanitary housing, full on-site medical service, a nursery school program, primary education, home-demonstration instruction, food for a healthy diet, recreational programing, and lessons in participatory democracy through self-governing councils. In these ways, she argues, the camps functioned as more than just labor centers aimed at improving agribusiness efficiency. Instead, they represented a profound "experiment in democracy" seeking to secure migrant farmworkers' full political and social participation in the United States. In recounting this chapter in the FSA's history, Migrant Citizenship provides insights into public policy concerning migrant workers, federal intervention in poor people's lives, and workers' cross-racial movements for social justice and offers a precedent for those seeking to combat the precarity in farm labor relations today.

A Nazi Camp Near Danzig Perspectives on Shame and on the Holocaust from Stutthof【電子書籍】[ Professor Emerita Ruth Schwertfeger ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Nazi Camp Near Danzig Perspectives on Shame and on the Holocaust from Stutthof【電子書籍】[ Professor Emerita Ruth Schwertfeger ]

Within the vast network of Nazi camps, Stutthof may be the least known beyond Poland. This book is the first scholarly publication in English to break the silence of Stutthof, where 120,000 people were interned and at least 65,000 perished. A Nazi Camp Near Danzig offers an overview of Stutthof's history. It also explores Danzig's significance in promoting the cult of German nationalism which led to Stutthof's establishment and which shaped its subsequent development in 1942 into a Concentration Camp, with the full resources of the Nazi Reich.

The book shows how Danzig/Gdansk, generally identified as the city where the Second World War started, became under Albert Forster, Hitler's hand-picked Gauleiter, 'the vanguard of Germandom in the east' and with its disputed history, the poster city for the Third Reich. It reflects on the fact that Danzig was close enough to supply Stutthof with both prisoners ? initially local Poles and Jews ? as well as local men for its SS workforce. Throughout the study, Ruth Schwertfeger draws on the stories of Danziger and Nobel Prize winner, G?nter Grass to consider the darker realities of German nationalism that even Grass's vibrant depictions and wit cannot mask. Schwertfeger demonstrates how German nationalism became more lethal for all prisoners, especially after the summer of 1944 when thousands of Jewish woman died in the Stutthof camp system or perished in the 'death marches' after January 1945. Schwertfeger uses archival and literary sources, as well as memoirs, to allow the voices of the victims to speak. Their testimonies are juxtaposed with the justifications of perpetrators. The book successfully argues that, in the end, Stutthof was no less lethal than other camps of the Third Reich, even if it was, and remains, less well-known.

The Sobibor Death Camp History, Biographies, Remembrance【電子書籍】[ Chris Webb ]

The Sobibor Death Camp was the second extermination camp built by the Nazis as part of the secretive Operation Reinhardtーwith intent to carry out the mass murder of Polish Jewry. Following the construction of the extermination camp at Belzec in south-eastern Poland from November 1941 to March 1942, the Nazis planned a second extermination camp at Sobibor, and the third and deadliest camp was built near the remote village of Treblinka. Sobibor was similarly designed as the first camp in Belzec, it was regarded as an 'overflow' camp for Belzec. This account of the Nazis' remorseless and relentless production line of killing at the Sobibor death camp tells of one of the worst crimes in the history of mankind. Chris Webb's painstakingly researched volume ranges from the survivors and the victims to the SS men who carried out the atrocities. What makes this work special is the research which has been gathered on the survivors, who by good fortune, courage, and determination survived Sobibor and built new lives for themselves, new families, but bore the scars of this terrible place for all of their lives. Closing a gap in the existing literature, Webb focuses on the victims and presents details of their lives which have been found and re-tells them to keep their memory alive, to show they are not forgotten. The cruel and barbaric murder process is described in great detail, as well as the confiscation of the valuables and possessions of the unfortunate Jews who crossed the threshold of this man-made hell. One cannot fail to be moved by the personal accounts of those who survived, their loved ones perished in this factory of death. The book covers the construction of the death camp, the physical layout of the camp, as remembered by both the Jewish inmates and the SS staff who served there, and the personal recollections that detail the day to day experiences of the prisoners and the SS. The courageous revolt by the prisoners on October 14, 1943 is re-told by the prisoners and the German SS, with detailed accounts of the revolt and its aftermath. The post-war fate of the perpetrators, or more precisely those that were brought to trial, and information regarding the more recent history of the site itself concludes this book. There is a large photographic section of rare and some unpublished photographs and documents from the author's private archive.

Przemys?owa Concentration Camp The Camp, the Children, the Trials【電子書籍】[ Katarzyna Person ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Przemys?owa Concentration Camp The Camp, the Children, the Trials【電子書籍】[ Katarzyna Person ]

This book explores one of the most notorious aspects of the German system of oppression in wartime Poland: the only purpose-built camp for children under the age of 16 years in German-occupied Europe. The camp at Przemys?owa street, or the Polen-Jugendverwahrlager der Sicherheitspolizei in Litzmannstadt as the Germans called it, was a concentration camp for children. The camp at Przemys?owa existed for just over two years, from December 1942 until January 1945. During that time, an unknown number of children, mainly Polish nationals, were imprisoned there and subjected to extreme physical and emotional abuse. For almost all, the consequences of atrocities which they endured in the camp remained with them for the rest of their lives. This book focuses on the establishment of the camp, the experience of the child prisoners, and the post-war investigations and trials.
In "Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front," E. W. Hornung presents a compelling and intimate portrait of life during World War I from the often-overlooked perspective of those who supported the front-line soldiers. Hornung'??s literary style blends vivid narrative with poignant observation, encapsulating the emotional turbulence and harsh realities of wartime existence. Crafted in the context of early 20th-century British literature, the book reflects the era's complex relationship with war, characterized by both romanticism and stark realism. Hornung's prose is infused with a deep understanding of the human spirit, revealing the resilience and sacrifices of those who served away from the battlefield. E. W. Hornung, an English author renowned for his literary contributions and close ties to the literary elite, including his marriage to Arthur Conan Doyle'??s sister, possessed firsthand experience of the war's impact. His motivations for writing this reflective memoir can be traced to his desire to illuminate the lives of camp-followers'??often family members of soldiers'??who played crucial roles yet remained largely invisible in contemporary war narratives. Hornung's unique insights, informed by his time in the field, give depth to his portrayal. "Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front" is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the multifaceted experiences of World War I. It provides a compelling counter-narrative to traditional war stories, making it an essential addition to the library of history enthusiasts and literature lovers alike.

A Not Too Greatly Changed Eden The Story of the Philosophers' Camp in the Adirondacks【電子書籍】[ James Schlett ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Not Too Greatly Changed Eden The Story of the Philosophers' Camp in the Adirondacks【電子書籍】[ James Schlett ]

In August 1858, William James Stillman, a painter and founding editor of the acclaimed but short-lived art journal The Crayon**, organized a camping expedition for some of America's preeminent intellectuals to Follensby Pond in the Adirondacks**. Dubbed the "Philosophers' Camp," the trip included the Swiss American scientist and Harvard College professor Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz, the Republican lawyer and future U.S. attorney general Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, the Cambridge poet James Russell Lowell, and the transcendental philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, who would later pen a poem about the experience. News that these cultured men were living like "Sacs and Sioux" in the wilderness appeared in newspapers across the nation and helped fuel a widespread interest in exploring the Adirondacks.

In this book, James Schlett recounts the story of the Philosophers' Camp, from the lives and careers ofーand friendships and frictions amongーthe participants to the extensive preparations for the expedition and the several-day encampment to its lasting legacy. Schlett's account is a sweeping tale that provides vistas of the dramatically changing landscapes of the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century. As he relates, the scholars later formed an Adirondack Club that set out to establish a permanent encampment at nearby Ampersand Pond. Their plans, however, were dashed amid the outbreak of the Civil War and the advancement of civilization into a wilderness that Stillman described as "a not too greatly changed Eden."

But the Adirondacks were indeed changing. When Stillman returned to the site of the Philosophers' Camp in 1884, he found the woods around Follensby had been disfigured by tourists. Development, industrialization, and commercialization had transformed the Adirondack wilderness as they would nearly every other aspect of the American landscape. Such devastation would later inspire conservationists to establish Adirondack Park in 1892. At the close of the book, Schlett looks at the preservation of Follensby Pond, now protected by the Nature Conservancy, and the camp site's potential integration into the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

Three boys witness it all. A compelling new novel by an award-winning author. 'We knew straightaway that something was happening. Extra men in khaki uniforms stood at the main gates. Behind the wire, figures in blue sat on the ground. None of the usual moving around, washing up, wrestling, anything like that. Just rows of prisoners, sitting silently.' It's 1942, and the tiny farming town of Featherston is about to receive hundreds of Japanese soldiers into its prisoner-of-war camp. Ewen, whose dad is a guard there, can't stop wondering about the enemy just down the road. Some say the captives are evil and cruel and should be treated harshly ? or shot. Camp Z How British Intelligence Broke Hitler's Deputy【電子書籍】[ Stephen McGinty ]

On 10 May 1941, Rudolf Hess, then the Deputy F?hrer, parachuted over Renfrewshire in Scotland on a mission to meet with the Duke of Hamilton, ostensibly to broker a peace deal with the British government. After being held in the Tower of London, he was transferred to Mytchett Place near Aldershot on 20 May, under the codename of 'Z'. The house was fitted with microphones and sound recording equipment, guarded by a battalion of soldiers and codenamed 'Camp Z'.

Churchill's instructions were that Hess should be strictly isolated, with every effort taken to get any information out of him that could help change the course of the Second World War. Stephen McGinty uses documentation, contemporaneous reports, diaries, letters and memos to piece together a riveting account of the claustrophobia, paranoia and high-stakes gamesmanship being played out in an English country house. CAMP Z is a 'locked room mystery' where the 'locked room' is a man's mind that no one can conclude, with any degree of confidence, is sane.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Between the Wires The Janowska Camp and the Holocaust in Lviv【電子書籍】[ Waitman Wade Beorn ]

Winner of the 2025 Omeljan Pritsak Book Prize in Ukrainian Studies
Finalist for the 2024 National Jewish Book Award
Honorable Mention for the 2023-2024 American Association for Ukrainian Studies Book Prize

Between the Wires tells for the first time the history of the Janowska camp in Lviv, Ukraine. Located in a city with the third-largest ghetto in Nazi-occupied Europe, Janowska remains one of the least-known sites of the Holocaust, despite being one of the deadliest. Simultaneously a prison, a slave labor camp, a transit camp to the gas chambers, and an extermination site, this hybrid camp played a complex role in the Holocaust.

Based on extensive archival research, Between the Wires explores the evolution and the connection to Lviv of this rare urban camp. Waitman Wade Beorn reveals the exceptional brutality of the SS staff alongside an almost unimaginable will to survive among prisoners facing horrendous suffering, whose resistance included an armed uprising. This integrated chronicle of perpetrators, victims, and bystanders follows the history of the camp into the postwar era, including attempts to bring its criminals to justice.

A World War II pictorial history detailing Nazi Germany's Auschwitz concentration camp, its monstrous creators, and what went on inside.
The concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau was the site of the single largest mass murder in history. Over one million mainly Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in its gas chambers. Countless more died as a result of disease and starvation. Auschwitz Death Camp is a chilling pictorial record of this infamous establishment. Using some 250 photographs together with detailed captions and accompanying text, it describes how Auschwitz evolved from a brutal labor camp at the beginning of the war into what was literally a factory of death. The images show how people lived, worked, and died at Auschwitz.
The book covers the men who conceived and constructed this killing machine, and how the camp provided a vast labor pool for various industrial complexes erected in the vicinity. Auschwitz Death Camp is shocking proof of the magnitude of horror inflicted by the Nazis on innocent men, women, and children. Such evil should not be forgotten lest it reappear.
