Wird auch aus der "Geschichte des Eisens " keine allgemeine Kulturgeschichte, so veranlasst doch die Bedeutung und vielseitige Verwendung dieses Metalls den Verfasser zu einer Darstellung, die alle Teile der materiellen Kultur umfasst oder wenigstens ber?hrt. Der allgemeine Wert des Gesamtwerkes ist vielleicht noch viel mehr ein historischer als ein technischer. Der Verfasser ist zwar von Hause aus Techniker und weist in seiner Einleitung mit Bescheidenheit darauf hin, dass man von ihm nicht das erwarten d?rfe, was der Geschichtsforscher leiste, er zeigt aber bald darauf durch eine treffliche Bemerkung, dass ihm zum Historiker nichts fehlt, als vielleicht die akademische Qualifikation, und dass viele M?nner vom Fach von ihm noch lernen k?nnen. Einen bedeutungsvollen Satz, den Beck durch das ganze Werk hindurch mit seltener Belesenheit, gro?em Flei? und geschickter Kombinationsgabe befolgt und durchf?hrt, kann man hier w?rtlich anf?hren: "Es will uns vielmehr bed?nken, als ob bei unserer Geschichtsschreibung dem biographischen Element gemeiniglich eine zu gro?e Bedeutung einger?umt w?rde, w?hrend die mechanischen Bedingungen der menschlichen Entwicklung, unter denen die Fortschritte der Technik, vor allem die der Eisentechnik eine hervorragende Rolle einnehmen, zu wenig Ber?cksichtigung f?nden. " Dieser Gedanke wird sich ja wohl bei der wachsenden kulturgeschichtlichen Forschung immer mehr Bahnbrechen, und Beck hat jedenfalls das Verdienst, in seiner Geschichte des Eisens gezeigt zu haben, wie dankbar und erfolgreich das Betreten dieses Weges ist, wenn sich mit sachlicher, hier technischer, Kenntnis historischer Sinn und flei?iges Quellenstudium vereinigen. Second is the sudden beginning of life on the planet. Third is consciousness, which scientists limit to the brain and philosophers attribute to the Absolute. Fourth is 'causation,' which scientists reject and religionists attribute to 'God.' Throughout the book the author examines unresolved topics that often appear to be resolved. The nature of gravity, the shape of the universe, and physical composition of space are a few examples.
