There are many dreary and dingy rows of ugly houses in certain parts of London, but there certainly could not be any row more ugly or dingier than Philibert Place. There were stories that it had once been more attractive, but that had been so long ago that no one remembered the time. It stood back in its gloomy, narrow strips of uncared-for, smoky gardens, whose broken iron railings were supposed to protect it from the surging traffic of a road which was always roaring with the rattle of busses, cabs, drays, and vans, and the passing of people who were shabbily dressed and looked as if they were either going to hard work or coming from it, or hurrying to see if they could find some of it to do to keep themselves from going hungry. The brick fronts of the houses were blackened with smoke, their windows were nearly all dirty and hung with dingy curtains, or had no curtains at all; the strips of ground, which had once been intended to grow flowers in, had been trodden down into bare earth in which even weeds had forgotten to grow. One of them was used as a stone-cutter's yard, and cheap monuments, crosses, and slates were set out for sale, bearing inscriptions beginning with "Sacred to the Memory of." Another had piles of old lumber in it, another exhibited second-hand furniture, chairs with unsteady legs, sofas with horsehair stuffing bulging out of holes in their covering, mirrors with blotches or cracks in them. The insides of the houses were as gloomy as the outside. They were all exactly alike. In each a dark entrance passage led to narrow stairs going up to bedrooms, and to narrow steps going down to a basement kitchen. The back bedroom looked out on small, sooty, flagged yards, where thin cats quarreled, or sat on the coping of the brick walls hoping that sometime they might feel the sun; the front rooms looked over the noisy road, and through their windows came the roar and rattle of it. It was shabby and cheerless on the brightest days, and on foggy or rainy ones it was the most forlorn place in London.

The longest, without exception, of Balzac's books, and one which contains hardly any passage that is not very nearly of his best, Illusions Perdues suffers, I think, a little in point of composition from the mixture of the Angouleme scenes of its first and third parts with the purely Parisian interest of Un Grand Homme de Province. It is hardly possible to exaggerate the gain in distinctness and lucidity of arrangement derived from putting Les Deux Poetes and Eve et David (a much better title than that which has been preferred in the Edition Definitive) together in one volume, and reserving the greatness and decadence of Lucien de Rubempre for another. It is distinctly awkward that this should be divided, as it is itself an enormous episode, a sort of Herodotean parenthesis, rather than an integral part of the story. And, as a matter of fact, it joins on much more to the Splendeurs et Miseres des Courtisanes than to its actual companions. In fact, it is an instance of the somewhat haphazard and arbitrary way in which the actual division of the Comedie has worked, that it should, dealing as it does wholly and solely with Parisian life, be put in the Scenes de la Vie de Province, and should be separated from its natural conclusion not merely as a matter of volumes, but as a matter of divisions. In making the arrangement, however, it is necessary to remember Balzac's own scheme, especially as the connection of the three parts in other ways is too close to permit the wrenching of them asunder altogether and finally. This caution given, all that is necessary can be done by devoting the first part of the introduction entirely to the first and third or Angouleme parts, and by consecrating the latter part to the egregious Lucien by himself.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

In "Swann's Way," the first volume of Marcel Proust's monumental work "In Search of Lost Time," the author masterfully weaves a narrative rich in introspection and memory, establishing a new paradigm in literary style. Through the use of stream-of-consciousness and intricate character sketches, Proust explores themes of love, art, and time, employing vivid imagery and detailed observations that evoke a profound sense of nostalgia. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Simplicius: On Aristotle Physics 1?8 General Introduction to the 12 Volumes of Translations【電子書籍】

Supporting the twelve volumes of translation of Simplicius' great commentary on Aristotle's Physics, all published by Bloomsbury in the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series, between 1992 and 2021, this volume presents a general introduction to the commentary. It covers the philosophical aims of Simplicius' commentaries on the Physics and the related text On the Heaven; Simplicius' methods and his use of earlier sources; and key themes and comparison with Philoponus' commentary on the same text.

Simplicius treats the Physics as a universal study of the principles of all natural things underlying the account of the cosmos in On the Heaven. In both treatises, he responds at every stage to the now lost Peripatetic commentaries of Alexander of Aphrodisias, which set Aristotle in opposition to Plato and to earlier thinkers such as Parmenides, Empedocles and Anaxagoras. On each passage, Simplicius after going through Alexander's commentary raises difficulties for the text of Aristotle as interpreted by Alexander. Then, after making observations about details of the text, and often going back to a direct reading of the older philosophers (for whom he is now often our main source, as he is for Alexander's commentary), he proposes his own solution to the difficulties, introduced with a modest 'perhaps', which reads Aristotle as in harmony with Plato and earlier thinkers.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mary Norton of New Jersey Congressional Trailblazer【電子書籍】[ David L. Porter ]

Mary Norton of New Jersey: Congressional Trailblazer tells the compelling story of Mary Norton, who served in the United States House of Representatives for 13 terms from 1925 to 1951, featuring her significant role as a congressional pioneer for women and American workers. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Norton grew up in a Roman Catholic, working-class family and was prodded to enter politics by Jersey City mayor Frank Hague. One of the first five women elected to the United States Congress, she cut a fresh path for women of ordinary means as the first female elected to the House from the Democratic Party, an eastern state, or urban center east of the Mississippi River.

Norton’s political career paralleled mayor Hague’s tight control of Jersey City and president Franklin Roosevelt’s national leadership during the Depression and World War II. Norton’s connection with Hague’s Jersey City Democratic Party political machine clouded her career, but Hague seldom tried to influence her legislative behavior.

Norton, the first woman to chair four House committees including a major committee, consistently supported legislation helping economically disadvantaged Americans and encouraged women to enter politics. At the helm of the District of Columbia Committee from 1931 to 1937, she served as unofficial mayor of Washington, D.C. and helped enact long-needed political, economic, and social legislation for its citizens. Her most valuable work came as head of the powerful Labor Committee from 1937 to 1947. Norton helped secure House passage of the landmark Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, establishing a national minimum hourly wage and maximum workweek. She sought to improve working conditions for America’s newly industrialized workers and defended the Wagner Act of 1935, allowing employees to bargain collectively for the value of their work.

Norton also helped secure federal funding for several Hudson County projects benefitting her Irish, Roman Catholic, working-class constituents. The expansion of mayor Hague’s gargantuan Medical Center Complex and the construction of Roosevelt Stadium provided numerous jobs for unemployed Hudson County residents. Norton, who never lost an election and was reelected by decisive margins, was the first woman elected as a freeholder in New Jersey and to direct a state Democratic Party.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Swann's Way Journey into the Depths of Memory and Identity【電子書籍】[ Marcel Proust ]

In 'Swann's Way', the inaugural volume of Proust's monumental seven-part series 'In Search of Lost Time', the narrative unfolds through a rich tapestry of memory, time, and desire. Proust employs a stream-of-consciousness style that intricately depicts the protagonist's introspections and associations, blending tender recollections with philosophical musings. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century French society, the novel explores themes of love, art, and social ambition, primarily through the lens of Charles Swann's unrequited love for Odette de Cr√?cy, establishing a profound exploration of the complexities of human emotion and perception. Marcel Proust, a key figure in early 20th-century literature, was deeply influenced by his own life experiences, particularly his reflections on memory and the passage of time. His upbringing in bourgeois Parisian society and struggles with illness informed his exploration of existential questions in his writing. 'Swann's Way' draws from his personal encounters and relationships, serving as a polished gem that illuminates the intricacies of both intimate and societal connections. Readers seeking a profound, introspective journey into the labyrinth of memory and identity will find 'Swann's Way' an indispensable exploration. This novel invites readers to reflective engagement, making it not just a story but an experience that resonates on both intellectual and emotional levels.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Witch of Sulphur Mountain: The Supernatural Life of Agnes Baron, Meher Baba's Beloved Watchdog【電子書籍】[ David Madison ]

"Baba, if you want Meher Mount I’ll keep it for you through hellfire and damnation!"

With these words fiery Agnes Baron commences the remaining 46 years of her hard-scrabble life devoted to Indian mystic Meher Baba who claims to be the Avatar (God in human form). She will get plenty of both. Two years prior in 1946, at Meher Baba’s behest, she, Jean Adriel, and other Baba-lovers found and established Meher Mount, an idyllic 172-acre retreat atop Sulphur Mountain in Ojai, CA. By the time she made her vow, Jean and the others had departed, leaving Meher Mount in her hands. But how will she keep “Baba’s Place” out of the hands of covetous schemers? She doesn’t own it. Jean does. And if Jean wants to sell it, there’s nothing she can do. Or is there? It brings out the witch in her. For this Meher Baba nicknames Agnes "Agni," Sanskrit word for fire, and dubs her his “Beloved Watchdog.” For 10 years she worries herself more than any dog its bone that it will be sold from under Baba’s feet. Shortly before his only visit to Meher Mount, on August 2, 1956, Agni gets Meher Mount in her name. But her worries aren’t over. A single woman without means, she finds work as a substitute teacher, and sells strawberries she grows, and lives with the haunting fear she won’t be able to make the mortgage payments, and the bank will seize it. Some who covet the property try to make her a ward of the state.

Agnes Baron’s remarkable life is written in the form of an idyll, a narrative poem in heroic verse. And heroic aptly describes her 87-year odyssey. Shortly after graduating in 1928 with a sociology degree from Antioch College, known for turning out revolutionaries, Agnes departs for war-torn Europe, on fire to help “My Friends Abroad.” Working as a freelance journalist, she chronicles the plight of the Jews fleeing anti-Semitism, and goes to Lisbon where she “bullies” bureaucrats for passports, and shipping companies and captains for passage. She travels the Balkan states, chronicling the plight of the underdogs: the poor, sick, oppressed, and downtrodden. In Spain she graphically depicts the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War, the bombings by German and Italian planes of Guernica and Barcelona. Throughout Europe she raises the alarm of the growing Nazi menace, and with the outbreak of WWII, the mounting horrors of the holocaust. After 13 years, sickened with man’s inhumanity to man, Agnes abandons her faith in God and returns to San Francisco, lost. “I hated humanity. I just wanted everybody to die. Blow them to hell. I just hated everybody. I was so in the deeps of despair that I gave myself arthritis of the spine. Then I stumbled on this lovely Quaker lady, and I went to one of her meetings. She went to Vedanta. I thought, Well if she goes to Vedanta it must be respectable. So I went up the hill and walked into the Vedanta Temple, and for the first time I had a ray of hope. There must be some hope for humanity. . . .”

She embraces Vedanta, and asks the swami of the Vedanta Temple if he will accept her as a nun. “I don’t take women,” he tells her, “but my brother swami in Hollywood does.” She goes there, he accepts her, and she lives the life of a Vedanta nun for two years, but still she does not find peace. Then she realizes why. She has to let God back into her heart. She does. But then she catches the swami in an indiscretion, and leaves him in disgust, telling him, “You're a fallen guru.”

She goes to a nearby Vedanta temple, Ananda Ashrama, is accepted, but then is told her typing late at night is keeping others awake. The swami tells her of another place two miles up the road, the New Life Center, devoted to an Indian guru. She wants nothing more to do with gurus, but she needs a place where she can write in peace. She goes there, rents a little place on a hill, and tells the owner, Jean Adriel, “Look, I don’t want anything to do with your damned [this under her breath] guru.” His name is Meher Baba.

Tales of War by Lord Dunsany provides an evocative portrayal of World War I, offering a nuanced view of the conflict from multiple perspectives. Published in the early 20th century, this collection captures the raw and visceral experiences of the war, focusing on both British and German soldiers, as well as their families.

Lord Dunsany's writing delves into the trenches of the Great War, portraying not just the brutality of battle but also the personal stories of those caught in its midst. Through a series of vivid and compelling narratives, readers gain insight into the lives of soldiers, their comrades, and their loved ones.

“The bullets were snapping over thick to keep them down while the Boche went on, on the right: machine guns, of course. The barrage was screaming well over and dropping far back, and their wire was still all right just in front of them, when they put up a head to look. There was the left platoon of the battalion. One doesn’t bother, somehow, so much about another battalion as one’s own. One’s own gets sort of homely. And there they were wondering how their own officer was getting on, and the few fellows with them, on his defensive flank. The bombs were going off thick. All the Daleswood men were firing half right. It sounded from the noise as if it couldn’t last long, as if it would soon be decisive, and the battle be won, or lost, just there on the right, and perhaps the war ended. They didn’t notice the left. Nothing to speak of.”

This passage exemplifies Dunsany’s ability to convey the intensity and immediacy of the wartime experience, making “Tales of War” a poignant and impactful read. The stories within this book are not just historical accounts but deeply personal reflections on the impact of war on human lives.

Discover the depth and humanity behind the headlines with Tales of War by Lord Dunsany. In J. L. Carr's deeply charged poetic novel, Tom Birkin, a veteran of the Great War and a broken marriage, arrives in the remote Yorkshire village of Oxgodby where he is to restore a recently discovered medieval mural in the local church. Living in the bell tower, surrounded by the resplendent countryside of high summer, and laboring each day to uncover an anonymous painter's depiction of the apocalypse, Birkin finds that he himself has been restored to a new, and hopeful, attachment to life. But summer ends, and with the work done, Birkin must leave. Now, long after, as he reflects on the passage of time and the power of art, he finds in his memories some consolation for all that has been lost.

In the shadow of the Scarborough Bluffs, a legend persists about Thomas Finch, a hiker who vanished in the early 1800s while searching for treasure. Rumor has it his ghost, along with that of Dame Simcoe, still haunt the area. Daniel, a tech-savvy urban explorer, sets out to debunk this myth. He gathers his friends Ben and Olivia to explore the Bluffs and prove the story is a fabrication. Olivia, a history student, is eager to uncover more about Finch and Dame Simcoe, while Ben is reluctant but intrigued by the mystery. As they embark on their hike using old maps and historical accounts, an eerie atmosphere envelops them. Olivia shares tales of Dame Simcoe, heightening their unease. When they discover a hidden cave entrance matching Finch's journal entries, Daniel insists on entering despite Ben's warnings.

Inside the cave, strange occurrences unsettle the groupーdisembodied whispers and flickering lights chill the air. Daniel dismisses these as natural phenomena, but Ben grows increasingly fearful. They stumble upon Finch's long-lost camp and fragments of his journal that reveal his descent into madness and a deal made with Dame Simcoe. The group becomes separated when Ben panics after a hallucination of Finch and flees deeper into the cave. Meanwhile, Daniel and Olivia investigate a mysterious inscription on the wall but lose track of Ben. They encounter Dame Simcoe's ghostly figure making cryptic pronouncements about protecting the "treasure" and punishing those who violate the Bluffs. Ben has a terrifying encounter with Finch's tormented ghost reliving his final moments of despair and pleading for help. However, Finch's madness renders his directions incoherent.

Daniel and Olivia find Ben deeply shaken but unharmed. Together they attempt to escape as paranormal activity intensifies around them. Olivia realizes that the treasure isn't physical but instead represents a legacy of pain tied to the land. She tries to appease Dame Simcoe by acknowledging the Bluffs' history and suffering. This revelation draws Finch's ghost back to them; seeking redemption, he guides them through a hidden passage leading out of the cave before they can be trapped forever. Reaching the surface leaves them forever changedーDaniel sheds his skepticism; Ben is traumatized; Olivia feels enlightened yet saddened by their experience. As they leave behind the silent Bluffs, Dame Simcoe's faint whisper drifts on the windーa reminder that some legends are best left undisturbed. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Shadows on the Tide【電子書籍】[ Rafae Gonz?lez ]

Shadows on the Tide plunges you into Muros de la Costa, a mist-shrouded fishing village on Spain’s Atlantic shore, where the creak of wooden piers and the salt-laden air conceal a network of horrors. Seven-year-old Ioana Popescu vanishes on a routine errand for bread, and two disparate souls race against time to unearth the truth buried beneath decades of silence.

Marcos Varela, a former Guardia Civil detective haunted by a case that derailed his career, returns to the coast determined to atone for past failures. Alongside him is Clara D?az, an intrepid local journalist desperate to illuminate the untold stories of her community. Their investigation is sparked by subtle cluesーa single boot print with a diamond-grid sole, an anchor-shaped button, a stray seagull featherーand guided by the whispered counsel of Ferm?n, a retired fisherman who knows every hidden passage in the abandoned cannery.

As they delve into crumbling arcades of stone, moonlit tunnels beneath water-stained tanks, and the ramshackle shanty of a clandestine scrap-dealer, Marcos and Clara unearth a ring of child exploitation operating behind the scenes of the mussel harvest. Together, they orchestrate daring night raids: slipping through underground corridors, freeing terrified youngsters from makeshift cages, and outmaneuvering armed accomplices under the glare of a full moon.

But Shadows on the Tide is more than a gripping thriller. It confronts deep ethical questions: Should identities be concealed to protect victims, or unveiled to galvanize public outcry? Can a journalist’s duty to inform coexist with a detective’s vow of silence until the rescue is secure? Clara wrestles with her editor’s pressure for sensational headlines, while Marcos struggles to silence the echoes of orders that once cost lives.

Over ten atmospheric chaptersーfrom the cozy warmth of the seaside bakery to the stark gloom of submerged holding cellsーthe novel weaves a tapestry of suspense, moral reckoning, and community resilience. When they finally expose Salvador “El Poncho” Ramos and his cohorts, the climax unfolds in a packed dockside press conference, radio helicopters overhead and national crews watching as truth overtakes fear.

In the poignant epilogue, Muros de la Costa reclaims its soul: children return to sunlight, grateful families rebuild their lives, and the village’s battered heart beats anew. A single sea-polished shell, gifted by Ioana to Clara, becomes a symbol of remembrance and hopeーproof that the tides may wash away footprints, but also restore what was lost.

Shadows on the Tide is a tribute to courage, compassion, and the power of storyーwhere every misty morning and every creaking board speaks to the light that emerges from even the deepest shadows.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Slipthk War: Pleroma The Slipthk War【電子書籍】[ D?v?n ]

The war has become more than war.

It is no longer a clash of forcesーbut a collision of truths, a convergence of archetypes, a reawakening of memories buried beneath the bones of time. The cataclysm unleashed by the Ash'Ara has peeled back the final veil, revealing what has always lingered behind the dream of existence: the Pleroma.

Here, at the threshold of form and formlessness, the illusion of separation begins to dissolve.

Elo-D?v?nーonce merely D?v?n, now fused with Elo-Ravin, the divine spark of remembrance, and Naviel, the echo of cosmic thoughtーhas become the axis of a deeper unraveling. His body, mind, and soul are no longer distinct. He is dreamt by the cosmos even as he dreams it. Every step he takes echoes across the lattice of being, stirring gods, guardians, and forgotten sentience from their long silence.

The companions that journey with him are no longer what they were.

Alind, bearer of compassion and conduit of grace, now resonates with the pulse of the Pleroma, her presence bending reality to the shape of empathy.

Divinity, the formless, who was once a whisper, has become a force of harmonic disruptionーa daughter of the void who sings to awaken truth from its prison of certainty.

E?χa, cloaked in paradox, holds the mirror to all things and reveals the nature of choice through her very breath.

Even the once-exiled ?????ーthe fallen sentinel of the Eastーmust confront the core of his undoing as the ancient Elders reemerge to reclaim dominion over what was never theirs to begin with.

Together, they pass through realms of myth and memory, across the Threshold of the Echoed Self, through the Spheres of the Forgotten Ones, and into the Chamber of Infinite Conjunctions, where identity is not static but fluidーtranscendent, recursive, and always in the act of becoming.

But not all forces wish for healing.

Beneath the shimmering membrane of the Pleroma stirs Ravhel-Suun, the great betrayer, the wound given voice. He is not merely an antagonist, but a living symptom of the cosmic splitーthe dissonance between knowing and being. He seeks not destruction, but correction. Not vengeance, but integration on his terms. His design is not chaos, but symmetry. Perfect, soulless, silent.

As the group reaches the Heart of the Pleroma, they are each shown what was lost: their true names, their divine echoes, the original threads that once wove them into the great harmonic whole. It is there they confront the being older than Sophia, bearing both the fracture and the seed. And it is there that the first breath ever spoken speaks again.

What is the Slipthk but the consequence of forgetting?

What is the war but a plea for remembrance?

In the final arc of this installment, reality itself bends under the weight of their choices. The fabric of time strains as timelines collapse, reweave, and echo into eternity. And from the soul of Ravhel-Suun, a hidden corridor opensーThe Wound, a living passage through the very origin of division.

To pass through is to lose everything. To remember what lies beyond is to die and become something entirely new.

The Slipthk War: Pleroma is not a continuationーit is an ascension. A metaphysical climax of symbol, silence, and soul. It invites the reader into a realm where philosophy becomes flesh, where myth births consequence, and where the truest battle is fought not between good and evil, but between dissonance and harmony, between forgetting and remembering, between exile… and return.

This is where the gods bleed.

Where the self shatters.

Where the truth is whole, and the whole is broken.

And from that brokenness, a new dawn waits to be born.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

"Accelerating the Clock" is a poignant exploration of love and loss, told through the symbolism of clocks and the relentless march of time. It follows Noah and Emilia, whose relationship gradually unravels as they become prisoners of their perceptions of time slipping away. From hopeful beginnings, they drift into silence, broken gears, and frozen moments, ultimately accepting that some love cannot be rewound. Their actionsーsilent gestures, futile repairs, and silent goodbyesーhighlight the inevitable decay of what once was. As their internal clocks stop ticking, they retreat into solitude, haunted by memories and the weight of lost moments. The story culminates in a bleak acknowledgment: some clocks are meant to be stopped forever, and some love stories are destined to fade into silence, leaving behind only the echoes of what once was. A haunting meditation on the passage of time, regret, and the impossibility of reclaiming what has slipped beyond reach.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The story follows Noah and Emilia as their once-hopeful relationship gradually dissolves into emotional turbulence, trust erodes, and memories fragment like broken reflections. Through a series of vivid, action-driven scenes, the narrative depicts their struggle to hold onto love amid doubt, regret, and inevitable separation. As their connection ebbs and their worlds drift apart, they become trapped in a cycle of longing, silence, and despair, culminating in a profound ending where hope is drowned, and the story fades into emotional oblivion. Ultimately, the novel captures the relentless, unstoppable passage of time and the tragic beauty of love lost to the inexorable currents of change.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
