A Lost Lady of Old Years by John Buchan is a historical novel blending romance, adventure, and moral introspection. Set in 17th-century Scotland, it follows Francis Birkenshaw, a young fugitive fleeing unjust accusations, who encounters the enigmatic Lady Marjorie Dalkeith. Once a celebrated beauty now fallen into obscurity, she becomes both ally and mentor as Francis navigates intrigue and danger during the Covenanters’ rebellion. Buchan explores themes of loyalty, redemption, and the passage of time, contrasting youthful idealism with the wisdom of age. The “lost lady” symbolizes a fading era, her story interwoven with Francis’s quest for justice and self-discovery. Rich in period detail and suspense, the novel captures the tension of a divided Scotland while reflecting on human resilience and the enduring power of dignity. A timeless tale of courage and transformation.

In A Season in Hell, at the age of eighteen, the French poet Arthur Rimbaud predicted the rest of his life: 'My day is done; I'm leaving Europe. The sea air will burn my lungs; lost climes will tan my skin.' Three years later, in 1876, he joined the Royal Army of the Dutch Indies as an infantryman and sailed for Java, where he promptly deserted and fled into the jungle. It was the most enigmatic passage in his life crowded with puzzles and contrarieties.

In the first book devoted to Rimbaud's lost voyage to Asia, the novelist and critic Jamie James reviews everything that is known about the episode; from there, he imaginatively spirals into a reconstruction of what the poet must have seen and informed speculation about what he might have done, vividly recreating life in nineteenth-century Java along the way. Rimbaud in Java concludes with an inquiry into what the Orient represented in the poet's imagination, with a scandalous, amusing history of French orientalism. James' surprising book is a richly concentrated blend of biography, criticism and thought-travel, which brings into sharp focus this brief encounter between a great writer and a vanished world.

Dr. Laura Vance has sacrificed everything for her controversial theories. Laughed out of academia, she risks it all on a final, solo expedition to find proof of a lost civilization and the ancient, silent god they worshipped. Her breakthrough comes when she discovers a perfectly preserved temple, a monument to a power forgotten by time.

In the heart of the sanctum, she finds her proof: a colossal statue of the very god from her research. In a moment of academic triumph, she reads an ancient passage aloud. She believes it to be a dedication, but she is gravely mistaken. The words are a ritual, and the stone is not stone at all.

Awakened from an eon of slumber, the Warden is a being of immense power and intellect. It is not interested in sharing its history; it is interested in the small, clever creature who woke it. Laura's quest for knowledge becomes a terrifying lesson as the god decides to teach her its forbidden languageーa lexicon written not in stone, but in the flesh. Her mind, her greatest asset, is systematically deconstructed as she is forced to learn that true understanding comes not from analysis, but from absolute, physical submission. Trapped and alone, the scholar becomes the text, her body the canvas for a lesson as old as the stars.

In "A Lost Lady," Willa Cather masterfully explores themes of love, loss, and the inevitable passage of time against the backdrop of the American West. Through the lens of Marian Forrester, a symbol of fading grandeur and shifting cultural values, Cather employs a rich, lyrical prose style that captures the rugged beauty of the Nebraska landscape and its profound impact on her characters. The narrative intricately intertwines Marian's internal struggles and the external forces of a changing society, reflecting a broader commentary on the American experience during the early 20th century, particularly the clash between tradition and modernity. Willa Cather, a prominent figure in early 20th-century American literature, often drew from her own Midwestern roots and experiences to inform her writings. Her keen observations of rural life and the complexities of human relationships are expertly woven into this poignant tale. Cather's admiration for the pioneering spirit and her understanding of the social dynamics of her time significantly shaped her portrayal of female characters, making them both relatable and complex. Readers of "A Lost Lady" will find themselves immersed in Cather's evocative storytelling and rich character development. This novel not only serves as a reflection on the fleeting nature of beauty and youth but also captures the essence of an era. It is highly recommended for those who appreciate nuanced narratives that resonate with themes of identity and nostalgia.

This “engrossing, well-paced” history reveals how England's first colony in the New World was forgottenーand rediscovered three centuries later (New Yorker).

England’s first attempt at colonizing the New World was not at Roanoke or Jamestown, but on a small, mostly frozen island in the Canadian Arctic. Queen Elizabeth I called that place Meta Incognita, the Unknown Shore. Backed by Elizabeth and her key advisors, the erstwhile pirate Sir Martin Frobisher crossed the North Atlantic to findーor so he thoughtーvast quantities of gold, the fabled Northwest Passage, and a suitable place for a year-round colony.

But Frobisher’s dream turned into a nightmare, and his colony was lost to history for nearly three centuries. In this compelling dual narrative, historian Robert Ruby interweaves Frobisher’s saga with that of the nineteenth-century American Charles Francis Hall, whose explorations of this same landscape led him to the Inuit, who passed down stories of Frobisher and his unknown colony across generations.

Unknown Shore is the story of two men’s travels, and of what these men shared three centuries apart. Ultimately, it is a tale of men driven by greed and ambition, of the hard labor of exploration, of the Inuit and their land, and of great gambles gone wrong.

This sets off a chain of events that reverberate through the decades.

In the meantime, in London in the current day, an aspiring historian named Caroline Parcewell celebrates her tenth wedding anniversary by herself, attempting to escape her own troubles. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Sunny's Nights Lost and Found at a Bar on the Edge of the World【電子書籍】[ Tim Sultan ]

Imagine that Alice had walked into a bar instead of falling down the rabbit hole. In the tradition of J. R. Moehringer’s The Tender Bar and the classic reportage of Joseph Mitchell, here is an indelible portrait of what is quite possibly the greatest bar in the worldーand the mercurial, magnificent man behind it.

The first time he saw Sunny’s Bar, in 1995, Tim Sultan was lost, thirsty for a drink, and intrigued by the single bar sign among the forlorn warehouses lining the Brooklyn waterfront. Inside, he found a dimly lit room crammed with maritime artifacts, a dozen well-seasoned drinkers, and, strangely, a projector playing a classic Martha Graham dance performance. Sultan knew he had stumbled upon someplace special. What he didn’t know was that he had just found his new home.

Soon enough, Sultan has quit his office job to bartend full-time for Sunny Balzano, the bar’s owner. A wild-haired Tony Bennett lookalike with a fondness for quoting Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, Sunny is truly one of a kind. Born next to the saloon that has been in his family for one hundred years, Sunny has over the years partied with Andy Warhol, spent time in India at the feet of a guru, and painted abstract expressionist originals. But his masterpiece is the bar itself, a place where a sublime mix of artists, mobsters, honky-tonk musicians, neighborhood drunks, nuns, longshoremen, and assorted eccentrics rub elbows. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming city, Sunny’s Nights is a loving and singular portrait of the dream experience we’re all searching for every time we walk into a bar, and an enchanting memoir of an unlikely and abiding friendship.

Praise for Sunny’s Nights

“Fantastic . . . [Sultan takes] material that might seem familiar and [mixes] a perfect, insightful cocktail: full-bodied, multitextured and delicious. . . . Simply beautiful.”ーThe New York Times Book Review

“Sultan’s love of Red Hook shines through, and it’s hard not to be swept along on the ebb and flow of his emotions. . . . Sultan’s book is, among other things, a meditation on the fragility of the moment and the passage of time. . . . Wistful, funny and biting, Sunny’s Nights rewards you with its evocation of a certain place in time and, as Sultan calls him, ‘the most original man I have ever met.’”ーNewsday

“An affectionate portrait of the idiosyncratic Sunny’s Bar.”ーUSA Today

“Sultan finds Sunny . . . a real character, a poet, a cinephile, a philosopher, bluegrass maestro and (Rheingold) beer server.”ーNew York Post (“Required Reading”)

“Captivating . . . a classic story about a local bar.”ーThe Buffalo News

“An enchanting memoir, a profound meditation on place and a beautiful story of an unlikely and abiding friendship.”ーBrooklyn Daily Eagle

“[A] polished, affecting look at remarkable barkeep Sunny Balzano . . . In elegant prose, Sultan deploys laconic humor, an instinct for telling details, a taste for eccentricity, and above all, clear-eyed compassion for our all-too-human failings.”ーPublishers Weekly (starred review)

“Beautifully wrought . . . an indelible portrait of an unusual man and a nearly forgotten part of NYC.”ーBooklist

“More than an elegy for a bar and a neighborhoodーit’s also a vivid and loving portrait of the larger-than-life eccentric who gave the bar its name and its spirit.”ーTom Perrotta, author of The Leftovers

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Lone Survivor The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10【電子書籍】[ Marcus Luttrell ]

Follow along a Navy SEAL's firsthand account of American heroism during a secret military operation in Afghanistan in this true story of survival and difficult choices.

On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.

A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow by blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks.

In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare -- and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Lost Winter Of Lyla Strauss【電子書籍】[ A.H. Scott ]

In this coming of age story, set in the Yukon of the year 1850: fur trapper and orphan he raised come face to face with the transformative dimensions of their relationship, from tragedies through time’s passage. Escaping the world of his past, Dancy Ruelaix ventured into the solitude of wilderness. Wanting to evade opening his heart to another human being, he always thought he never needed anyone. But, there was one person who could not live without him. Her name was Lyla Strauss. A season of change comes in “The Lost Winter of Lyla Strauss”.

Both trappers did the best they could in saving Coulton’s right foot, as the probability of him losing it was a likely conclusion beyond blooded strips of white cloth and an improvised splint along the length of his leg.

Delirium wafted over the stranger, as bouts of excruciating pain and slim swaths of lucidity encapsulated this human being for almost a month. Person nursing him back to some semblance of viability relied mostly on tinctures and potions from Ravenswood, a shamanic healer from the Inuit tribe.

Hollister’s condition was touch and go as he drifted into a coma during the middle of October and was given a spiritual ceremony of finality by Ravenswood.

As one of the trappers stayed inside the cabin around the clock keeping watch over Coulton for the next seven days the other stayed the course of collecting, cleaning and curing pelts for the future winter months to come.

To normalize Coulton Hollister’s temperature since his rescue in September, a bed had been placed in the front room of the cabin where the fireplace was located.

On the morning of the seventh day of that vigil, sun beamed through an almost sheer piece of fabric on the side window of the cabin and a man awakened once more.

Coulton’s eyes slowly opened, as a blazing flash of sunlight filled the cabin and he got a first glimpse of life back among the living.

Beneath a cocooning layer of varied blankets, cloths and fur swaths, this wounded man’s arms slowly pushed them to one side of the bed as his eyes grasped for some sight which was familiar to him.

Focusing first upon his beard which had become overgrown, Coulton’s eyes slowly began to blink and take in a pleasant view.
Across the room from where he was, a nude female of slight form sat on the edge of another bed, brushing long, brown hair with her back situated to him.

In an awakened presence of the angel who he had thought was sent to watch over him Coulton Hollister thought this young waif of only 13 or 14 years of age had been the daughter of the trappers who’d recovered him from the base of that ravine.

Focusing his eyes upon this nude female, he realized she was more mature than being of teen years. She was not a girl, but a woman of tender presence. Probably not the daughter of the trapper, but a young bride of a mountain man was the thought which filled Hollister’s mind about this beauty.

Coulton’s labored grunt filled the air, as each footstep brought him closer to where she sat upon the bed. Using a branch located near his bed as a crutch to stabilize his balance, he moved slowly.

Hearing him stir behind her, this young woman wrapped a white cotton garment around herself in front of this stranger, “You certainly know how to scare a person, Mister”. She spoke with an anxious smile.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE NONFICTION CROWN AWARD 2024

GUARDIAN: BOOKS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 2024

'GRIPPING' THE TIMES

This is an immersive and revelatory history of the survivors of the Clotilda, the last ship of the Atlantic slave trade, whose lives diverged and intersected in profound ways.

The Clotilda docked in Mobile Bay, Alabama, in July 1860 ? more than half a century after the passage of a federal law banning the importation of captive Africans, and nine months before the beginning of the Civil War. The last of its survivors lived well into the twentieth century. They were the last witnesses to the final act of a terrible and significant period in world history.

In this epic work, Dr. Hannah Durkin tells the stories of the Clotilda’s 110 captives, drawing on her intensive archival, historical, and sociological research. Survivors follows their lives from their kidnappings in what is modern-day Nigeria through a terrifying 45-day journey across the Middle Passage; from the subsequent sale of the ship’s 103 surviving children and young people into slavery across Alabama to the dawn of the Civil Rights movement in Selma; from the foundation of an all-Black African Town (later Africatown) in Northern Mobile ? an inspiration for writers of the Harlem Renaissance, including Zora Neale Hurston ? to the foundation of the quilting community of Gee’s Bend ? a Black artistic circle whose cultural influence remains enormous.

An astonishing, deeply compelling tapestry of history, biography and social commentary, Survivors is a tour de force that deepens our knowledge and understanding of the Atlantic slave trade and its far-reaching influence on life today.
