Identical twin brothers Thomas and Joshua are hell-bent to determine whether a Hopi prophecy about four sacred stones is true or not. It is prophesized that a sacred stone was hidden in the Far East and if reunited with the sacred stone in North America it will mark the arrival of the Second Messiah. It takes the brothers far away to Burma where Thomas discovers clues left behind by an early Protestant missionary from Pennsylvania.
After finding Louis Riels' personal journals through Riel's grandson, the twins use their knowledge of Native American religious beliefs to begin an odyssey on the train past Mandalay and the officer's club where George Orwell drank his oily gin beside the Allywaddy River in the 1920s, to the far reaches in north in Burma. A prophecy thousands of years old is protected by guardians of the sacred stone, but resourcefulness and timing lay with the M?tis twins from Canada.
Factually accurate and well-researched, Prophecy Seekers takes the reader deep into old Native beliefs and connections to the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, reaching as far as northern Burma and the Kachin tribe, said to be the source of the migration to the Americas centuries before. The Hopi Indians, holders of the ancient prophecies, were the focus of Remy McFlynn for many years when he studied under a medicine man in Canada. His knowledge and passion for Native culture shine through in the book and rubbed off on Trapp, who wrote the book while living in Hong Kong.
Based on an extraordinary journey to northern Burma, some scenes are so vivid that it transports the reader to different vistas, from George Orwell's officer's club to the encounter with the Colonel on the train and even the meeting with Louis Riel's grandson, novel has captured something special. But the most memorable aspect of the book is the ending, when the phoenix burns into ash. Seldom has a passage of such objectivity and clarity been recorded during a brush with death.

DESCRIPTION
Julia works as a fashion designer in her father’s fashion company. Despite her boring sexual life, she had a faithful friend and sometimes lover; he was the only one devoted friend who had a sincere crush on her. But she considered him as the brother she never had. Everything seemed to have found its normal routine, until she met Gary, with whom she had a passionate and unpredictable connection.

EXCERPT
Carried away like an engine just ignited, she placed herself so she was face front against the mirror, pressing her butt cheeks in Glen’s face. All in fever, Glen lifted up her skirt, uncovering her naked round ass, and expertly started to heat up the warm meaty white cakes of her cheeks by smacking her milky globes, till her anal hole awaked, between her shaved valley.

Julia moaned, her bare breasts sticking flat against her reflection. Aroused, she started moving her head from side to side in total abandon, as Glen pushed his fingers deeper between her cheeks, rubbing the inner walls of her dark rosebud to the base of her cunny lips. Lust was growing in Julia’s own groin.

“How can you be so teasing?” she panted, breathlessly.

“Yes, I know, and I’m going to prepare your ass.”

Julia trembled at the daring idea. Despite her moans under his digital touch. Nobody had fucked her up there. Why not try, she thought almost shyly. Her anus was feeling the need for satisfaction.

Glen lifted her butt so he began kissing and licking at her brown eye with his thick tongue, rimming in and out her back. She groaned and moaned in crescendo, aware of his vicious laps, she reached back with her hands, spreading her cheeks wide enough, in the hope of getting more pleasure. Julia realized that her eagerness was leading her to the most degrading lewdness she couldn’t imagine.

“Ooooh yes,” she moaned, as Glen’s meaty tongue moved like a worm.

Now, he parted the cleft between her butts, putting in full view the beauty of her salivated dark bud.

Slowly but surely, Glen slipped a finger, then two, into her greasy channel, dilating its muscles for better access.

Julia shivered, unsure of herself, if she was aroused by the idea of anal sex, or simply by the pleasure that it was supposed to give.

“Yesssss, now, please,” she implored him, without inhibitions.” Too excited, to be able to control herself.

Clutching her butt, and pushing the skin apart, Glen made her anus gape, lowered his tongue between her cheeks again, and licked the stretched puckered eyelet.

“How fantastic, it is,” she ventured, “It all makes me wet and juicy.”

Glen knew she was now ready for particular attention. He smothered her sex lips, and lubricated her slack puckered lemon with her own juice until it opened by itself. At this very moment, he trailed his meaty flesh against the entrance to her anal orb, making her escape a growing sigh. He pushed himself enough to get her accustomed to his enormous size.

“MMmmmm. “Yes.” She whispered.

Like a stud, Glen started his incredible motion. Willingly, Julia parted the globes of her milky cakes wider. He pushed his flesh further in, as the gossamer walls of her anus contracted around his knob. It was then, he withdrew, spat a rope of saliva in her canal and reinserted his glans back against the starfish of her bud. Julia’s tight passage dilated even more to his assaults. She had nearly lost her breath as he rhythmically thrusted her bowels...

Slaveboy 1【電子書籍】[ The SexSkits Project ]

Sexual role play is a sexual behavior between two or more people in which they take on erotic roles to carry out a sexual fantasy. The depth of the role play depends on the couple, and the scenario may be anywhere from simple and makeshift, to detailed and elaborate, complete with costumes and a script. Unfortunately, there are not many resources out there for couples wishing to start out in sexual role play, but don't know where to start...until now. Introducing SexSkits…

When we were children, our play was only bound only by our imaginations. But as we became adults, we somehow lost touch with our imaginative streak when it comes to playing with others, especially in intimate moments with our lovers. This is where SexSkits comes in to play. SexSkits give us a script to follow and the ability to pretend that we are someone else, and our lover is someone else, all in the safety and privacy of our own bedrooms. And because SexSkits have been specifically designed and written with intimate play in mind, they are easy to learn and follow, so no matter how shy or uncomfortable we may feel at the moment, we can work through those temporary feelings to a moment of shared orgasmic bliss with our partners through sexual role play.

MISTRESS begins SLAVE’s training, carefully instructing him in the basic four BDSM positions that will be required in this SexSkit, using her Riding Crop to punctuate his failures. After instructing SLAVE in these positions, MISTRESS sits upon her throne and shows disinterest in SLAVE, as she picks up a book and begins reading. As MISTRESS reads a sexy passage, she becomes aroused and her hand moves between her legs, stroking herself lightly. SLAVE sees the action, and in-turn becomes aroused. MISTRESS discovers SLAVE’s clandestine spying, and disciplines him accordingly. MISTRESS then allows SLAVE to masturbate, utilizing a series of ‘Stop’ and ‘Resume’ commands designed to tease SLAVE and dramatically increase his individual sexual tension during the scene. MISTRESS eventually allows SLAVE relief, instructing him to ejaculate into an aperitif glass that she provides for him.The SexSkit then moves into a scene where slave must orally pleasure MISTRESS who uses this time to let SLAVE;’s refractory period pass and establish re-arousal in SLAVE for the final scene of intercourse where MISTRESS assumes various dominant woman on top positions leading to mutual climax…

The SexSkits “Slaveboy 1” role-play scenario was written to the Domination genre with a special emphasis in the Control sub-genre. The intent was to create a believable scenario and atmosphere in which the participants both can realistically think that they are dominating, being dominated by the opposite SexSkit participant in an initial BDSM scene.

SexSkit Genre: Dominance
SexSkit Sub-genre: Control
SexSkit Difficulty: Difficult
SexSkit Fantasy Base: For Her
SexSkit Scripted Sexual Actions: Heavy Female Domination (FemDom), Male submission, Male Masturbation, Bondage, Cunnilingus, Intercourse

The Annotated African American Folktales (The Annotated Books)【

Winner ? NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work (Fiction)
Winner ? Anne Izard Storytellers’ Choice Award
Holiday Gift Guide Selection ? Indiewire, San Francisco Chronicle, and Minneapolis Star-Tribune

These nearly 150 African American folktales animate our past and reclaim a lost cultural legacy to redefine American literature.

Drawing from the great folklorists of the past while expanding African American lore with dozens of tales rarely seen before, The Annotated African American Folktales revolutionizes the canon like no other volume. Following in the tradition of such classics as Arthur Huff Fauset’s “Negro Folk Tales from the South” (1927), Zora Neale Hurston’s Mules and Men (1935), and Virginia Hamilton’s The People Could Fly (1985), acclaimed scholars Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Maria Tatar assemble a groundbreaking collection of folktales, myths, and legends that revitalizes a vibrant African American past to produce the most comprehensive and ambitious collection of African American folktales ever published in American literary history. Arguing for the value of these deceptively simple stories as part of a sophisticated, complex, and heterogeneous cultural heritage, Gates and Tatar show how these remarkable stories deserve a place alongside the classic works of African American literature, and American literature more broadly.

Opening with two introductory essays and twenty seminal African tales as historical background, Gates and Tatar present nearly 150 African American stories, among them familiar Brer Rabbit classics, but also stories like “The Talking Skull” and “Witches Who Ride,” as well as out-of-print tales from the 1890s’ Southern Workman. Beginning with the figure of Anansi, the African trickster, master of improvisationーa spider who plots and weaves in scandalous waysーThe Annotated African American Folktales then goes on to draw Caribbean and Creole tales into the orbit of the folkloric canon. It retrieves stories not seen since the Harlem Renaissance and brings back archival tales of “Negro folklore” that Booker T. Washington proclaimed had emanated from a “grapevine” that existed even before the American Revolution, stories brought over by slaves who had survived the Middle Passage. Furthermore, Gates and Tatar’s volume not only defines a new canon but reveals how these folktales were hijacked and misappropriated in previous incarnations, egregiously by Joel Chandler Harris, a Southern newspaperman, as well as by Walt Disney, who cannibalized and capitalized on Harris’s volumes by creating cartoon characters drawn from this African American lore.

Presenting these tales with illuminating annotations and hundreds of revelatory illustrations, The Annotated African American Folktales reminds us that stories not only move, entertain, and instruct but, more fundamentally, inspire and keep hope alive.

The Annotated African American Folktales includes:

Introductory essays, nearly 150 African American stories, and 20 seminal African tales as historical background

The familiar Brer Rabbit classics, as well as news-making vernacular tales from the 1890s’ Southern Workman

An entire section of Caribbean and Latin American folktales that finally become incorporated into the canon

Approximately 200 full-color, museum-quality images

The Hand in the Dark【電子書籍】[ Arthur Rees ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Hand in the Dark【電子書籍】[ Arthur Rees ]

Seen in the sad glamour of an English twilight, the old moat-house, emerging from the thin mists which veiled the green flats in which it stood, conveyed the impression of a habitation falling into senility, tired with centuries of existence. Houses grow old like the race of men; the process is not less inevitable, though slower; in both, decay is hastened by events as well as by the passage of Time.

The moat-house was not so old as English country-houses go, but it had aged quickly because of its past. There was a weird and bloody history attached to the place: an historical record of murders and stabbings and quarrels dating back to Saxon days, when a castle had stood on the spot, and every inch of the flat land had been drenched in the blood of serfs fighting under a Saxon tyrant against a Norman tyrant for the sacred catchword of Liberty.

The victorious Norman tyrant had killed the Saxon, taken his castle, and tyrannized over the serfs during his little day, until the greater tyrant, Death, had taught him his firstーand lastーlesson of humility. After his death some fresh usurper had pulled down his stolen castle, and built a moat-house on the site. During the next few hundred years there had been more fighting for restless ambition, invariably connected with the making and unmaking of tyrants, until an English king lost his head in the cause of Liberty, and the moat-house was destroyed by fire for the same glorious principle.

It was rebuilt by the freebooter who had burnt it down; one Philip Heredith, a descendant of Philip Here-Deith, whose name is inscribed in the Domesday Book as one of the knights of the army of Duke William which had assembled at Dives for the conquest of England. Philip Heredith, who was as great a fighter as his Norman ancestor, established his claim to his new estate, and avoided litigation concerning it, by confining the Royalist owner and his family within the walls of the moat-house before setting it on fire. He afterwards married and settled down in the new house with his young wife. But the honeymoon was disturbed by the ghost of the cavalier he had incinerated, who warned him that as he had founded his line in horror it would end in horror, and the house he had built would fall to the ground...

Praise for Don Gutteridge’s Poetry:

"There is no doubt the poems collected in this svelte volume have been memorially ‘lived in’; they must negotiate a world with ? and without ? words. Gutteridge’s poetic offerings do not rely on complex conceptual acrobatics, but are seemingly designed as accessible snapshots of life. Each tells a story in the form of a vignette, its context established quickly like the flash of a photographer’s bulb. Accented with very memorable imagery, such as the widow Mrs. Bray being “bee-deep” in the flowers, or the tasteful alliterations of “glittering gladioli” and “dappling daze,” all serve to call us home to our humble archive of memories to delight in those moments when the slap of a strap, an engine drone, the spectacular light of the crepuscular evening and the passage of life to a wordless world are personally profound events. Both pleasant and haunting, we are treated to a world of velvet voices and muttering mortars in a memorial transfer from past to present, from present to beyond." - Kane X Faucher, Professor, Western University, in The Western News

"What an absolutely stunningly beautiful book. I love the lyric simplicity of Tidings (and in this context the word simplicity is very high praise indeed). I read poem after poem and think it is a masterpiece. There is an abiding sadness, but the sadness of wisdom, of knowing that if we live long enough, we lose loved ones, we keep them in our hearts though they are gone. Long ago I coined the phrase “the presence of absence” to capture in as few words as possible what I felt when I thought of those loved ones I’d lost. We preserve them in poems. We keep them alive in memory and dream. We weep and grieve and lament and celebrate. This book is profound and wise and consoling. I will be reading it again and again because it goes deep. It has the courage of autobiography without the honey trap of the confessional." - John B Lee, award-winning poet

This creative nonfiction biography of the celebrated Arctic explorer Dr. John Rae begins in 1854 when, on a mapping expedition to the Boothia Peninsula, Rae discovers the missing link in the Northwest Passage. On the same trip, a chance encounter with an Inuit hunter leads him to uncover the tragic fate that befell the officers and crew of the long-missing Franklin Expedition when, starving on the ice, they resorted to cannibalism.

When the Scottish-born scientist and Hudson’s Bay Company Chief Factor reports the shocking details about the men’s demise to the British Admiralty, he is publicly belittled by such well-known Victorian society figures as the novelist Charles Dickens and Sir John Franklin’s widow, Jane. From then on, Rae’s life becomes a restless journey of soaring hope and bitter disappointment, as he attempts to restore his good reputation with the British public, defend the integrity of the Arctic natives who brought him detailed testimony about the evidence of cannibalism, and rebuild his shattered identity. Rae’s search for what has been lost takes him to Hamilton, Lower Canada, across Rupert’s Land to the Pacific Coast, to the Faroe Islands, across Greenland, and then finally home to the Orkney Islands where yet another turn of events catches him by surprise.

The Poison Belt【電子書籍】[ Arthur Conan Doyle ]

The Poison Belt was the second story, a novella, that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about Professor Challenger. Written in 1913, roughly a year before the outbreak of World War I, much of it takes place in a single room in Challenger's house in Sussex ? rather oddly, given that it follows The Lost World, a story set largely outdoors in the wilds of South America. This would be the last story written about Challenger until the 1920s, by which time Doyle's spiritualist beliefs had begun to influence his writing. Challenger sends telegrams asking his three companions from The Lost World ー Edward Malone, Lord John Roxton, and Professor Summerlee ? to join him at his home outside London, and instructs each of them to 'bring oxygen'. On arrival they are ushered into a sealed room, along with Challenger and his wife. In the course of his researches into various phenomena, Challenger has predicted that the Earth is moving into a belt of poisonous ether which, based on its effect on the people of Sumatra earlier in the day, he expects to stifle humanity. Challenger seals them in the room with cylinders of oxygen, which he (correctly) believes will counter the effect of the ether. The five wait out the Earth's passage through the poison belt as they watch the world outside die and machines run amok. (According to Victorian values ? or to Doyle's understanding of them ? Challenger's servants are left outside the sealed room, and they continue to perform their duties until the ether overtakes them.) Finally, the last of the oxygen cylinders is emptied, and they open a window, ready to face death. To their surprise, they do not die, and conclude the Earth has now passed through the poison belt.

Heart of Darkness【電子書籍】[ Joseph Conrad ]

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a short novel by Joseph Conrad, written as a frame narrative, about Charles Marlow’s life as an ivory transporter down the Congo River in Central Africa. The river is “a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land.” In the course of his travel in central Africa, Marlow becomes obsessed with Mr. Kurtz.
The story is a complex exploration of the attitudes people hold on what constitutes a barbarian versus a civilized society and the attitudes on colonialism and racism that were part and parcel of European imperialism. Originally published as a three-part serial story, in Blackwood's Magazine, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages.

In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century.

Short Summary
Aboard the Nellie, anchored in the River Thames near Gravesend, England, Charles Marlow tells his fellow sailors about the events that led to his appointment as captain of a river-steamboat for an ivory trading company. He describes his passage on ships to the wilderness to the Company's station, which strikes Marlow as a scene of devastation: disorganized, machinery parts here and there, periodic demolition explosions, weakened native black men who have been demoralized, in chains, literally being worked to death, and strolling behind them a white Company man in a uniform carrying a rifle. At this station Marlow meets the Company's chief accountant who tells him of a Mr. Kurtz, and explains that Kurtz is a first-class agent.

The Service【電子書籍】[ Henry David Thoreau ]

When some twenty years ago there were sent to me from the portfolios of Emerson papers by different friends of ours, I found among them an essay of twenty-two full manuscript pages, in the familiar script of Thoreau, tied together with knots of faded pink ribbon, like his College Commencement "part," but with no numbering of the pages. If made up, as it probably was (according to Thoreau's constant custom), from his Journals, the fact cannot be well ascertained, so many of the entries before 1841 having been destroyed or lost. More than any of his published writings, it displays that taste for paradox which often is found in authors of a singular originality, and of such a profound imagination as Thoreau had. Its form was perhaps suggested by the discourses on Peace and Non-resistance which in 1840 were so numerous in New England; while the native pugnacity of Thoreau provoked him to take up the cause of war and persist in the apostolic symbolism of the soldier of the Lord, and the Middle-Age crusader. Human life is his topic, and he views it with an Oriental scope of thought, in which distinctions of Time and Space are lost in the wide prospect of Eternity and Immortality. Curiously at variance with this is the play upon words,ーa habit which he never outgrew; while his wonderful glances at outward nature, always interpreted symbolically of the spiritual life, indicate how early and intense was that perception of the aspects of the universe which first (and perhaps chiefly still) awakened an interest in Thoreau's pages. Characteristic, too, are his ecstasies concerning Music, of which he was ever the enthusiastic votary. Thus in a passage from some Journal, cited by Ellery Channing in his rich chaos of selections in "Thoreau the Poet-Naturalist," he says: "What a significant comment on our life is the least strain of music! When I hear music I fear no danger; I am invulnerable; I see no foe; I am related to the earliest times and the latest. I hear music below; it washes the dust off my life, and everything I look at. The field of my life becomes a boundless plain, glorious totread, with no death or disappointment at the end of it. In the light of this strain there is no Thou nor I. It paints the landscape suddenly; it is at once another land,ーthe abode of poetry."

The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia, and the Sword Hunters of the Hamran Arabs【電子書籍】[ Sir Samuel White Baker ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia, and the Sword Hunters of the Hamran Arabs【電子書籍】[ Sir Samuel White Baker ]

WITHOUT troubling the public with a description of that portion of the Nile to the north of the first cataract, or with a detailed account of the Egyptian ruins, that have been visited by a thousand tourists, I will commence by a few extracts from my journal, written at the close of the boat voyage from Cairo:-- "May 8, 1861.--No air. The thermometer 104 degrees Fahr.; a stifling heat. Becalmed, we have been lying the entire day below the ruins of Philae. These are the most imposing monuments of the Nile, owing to their peculiar situation upon a rocky island that commands the passage of the river above the cataract. The banks of the stream are here hemmed in by ranges of hills from 100 to 250 feet high; these are entirely destitute of soil, being composed of enormous masses of red granite, piled block upon block, the rude masonry of Nature that has walled in the river. The hollows between the hills are choked with a yellow sand, which, drifted by the wind, has, in many instances, completely filled the narrow valleys. Upon either side of the Nile are vestiges of ancient forts. The land appears as though it bore the curse of Heaven; misery, barrenness, and the heat of a furnace are its features. The glowing rocks, devoid of a trace of vegetation, reflect the sun with an intensity that must be felt to be understood. The miserable people who dwell in villages upon the river's banks snatch every sandbank from the retiring stream, and immediately plant their scanty garden with melons, gourds, lentils, &c. this being their only resource for cultivation. Not an inch of available soil is lost; but day by day, as the river decreases, fresh rows of vegetables are sown upon the newly-acquired land. At Assouan, the sandbanks are purely sand brought down by the cataracts, therefore soil must be added to enable the people to cultivate. They dig earth from the ruins of the ancient town; this they boat across the river and spread upon the sandbank, by which excessive labour they secure sufficient mould to support their crops. In the vicinity of Philae the very barrenness of the scenery possesses a charm. The iron-like sterility of the granite rocks, naked except in spots where the wind has sheeted them with sand; the groves of palms springing unexpectedly into view in this desert wilderness, as a sudden bend of the river discovers a village; the ever blue and never clouded sky above, and, the only blessing of this blighted land, the Nile, silently flowing between its stern walls of rocks towards the distant land of Lower Egypt, form a total that produces a scene to be met with nowhere but upon the Nile. In this miserable spot the unfortunate inhabitants are taxed equally with those of the richer districts--about fivepence annually for each date palm. "May 9.--A good breeze, but tremendous heat. Although the floor and the curtains of the cabin are continually wetted, and the Venetian blinds are closed, the thermometer, at 4 P.M., stood at 105 degrees in the shade; and upon deck, 137 degrees in the sun. This day we passed the ruins of several small temples. The country is generally rocky, with intervals of ten or twelve miles of desert plains.

9 1/2 Narrow My Life in Shoes【電子書籍】[ Patricia Morrisroe ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】9 1/2 Narrow My Life in Shoes【電子書籍】[ Patricia Morrisroe ]

A funny, poignant coming-of-age memoir told through the shoes that she wore.

From baby booties to orthopedic brogues (and all the high and low heels in between) shoes mark important rites of passage, reminding us of both the good and bad times: the road not taken, the prince that got away, the missed opportunities, the traveling, the fun. Most of all, they bring to mind the people we’ve loved and sometimes lost along the way.

Combining tidbits of cultural history, Morrisroe chronicles her life as a bullied Catholic schoolgirl in “Moby Dick” brogues; a besotted college student in granny boots; an aspiring journalist in Annie Hall oxfords; a skeptical bride in her first Manolos; a reluctant fashionista in towering peep-toe pumps; and a concerned daughter, whose elderly mother hoped that her New Balance sneakers would help her regain her old balance. With wit and compassion, she introduces us to an unforgettable cast of characters, from her grandfather, who treated the family to legendary foot rubs, to her husband, whose vast collection of vintage Puma sneakers threatened to overwhelm their apartment and derail their marriage.

Morrisroe’s “coming-of-age” is, at its heart, the story of a generation of women who’ve enjoyed a world of freedom and opportunity that was unthinkable to their mothers. Spanning five decades and countless footwear trends, 9 ? Narrow is, like Love, Loss and What I Wore, about how we remember important events through a coat, or a dress, or in this case, a Beatle boot or Confirmation “wedgie.” With her charming sense of humor and irresistible voice, Morrisroe not only recounts her own story but also everywoman’s. Funny, candid and unexpectedly poignant, 9 ? Narrow is about how we grow up, grow older, and finally grow into our own shoes.

In this contemplative novel-poem, Jean-Fran?ois Beauchemin invites us to share in the inner world of the grieving Mr. Bartolom?, who, following the mysterious disappearance of his young son, wanders and wonders, seeking to transcend his pain by encountering something larger than himself. Continuously occupied by the memory of his lost son, Bartolom?’s quest leads him from the city to the countryside and then to the edge of the ocean, where he marvels at the beauty of nature but cannot penetrate its mysteries.

Through reference to the two-million-year-old “Turkana Boy,” the fossilized remains of a boy found in 1984 near Lake Turkana, Kenya, Beauchemin addresses processes of memory and the long history of human evolution. Beauchemin’s character Bartolom? sees in the lives of the boysーseparated by nearly two million yearsーa kind of twin destiny. Has the passage of millennia changed the intensity of human feeling at the loss of blood relations? “Who knows what they had felt? Had the same emotions, those associated with incommensurable loss, broken their bodies, as they had his? Over and above morphological differences sculpted by the passage of millennia, was there something resembling a permanence of feeling, a sort of eternity for the murmuring of the heart, transmitted through the ages by the bonds of blood?”

Turkana Boy offers a poignant examination of grieving and one man’s search for understanding. This surrealist narrative is punctuated with magnificent musings on the world and startling questions about what it means to be alive.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Songs My Mother Sang to Me An Oral History of Mexican American Women【電子書籍】[ Patricia Preciado Martin ]

Motivated by a love of her Mexican American heritage, Patricia Preciado Martin set out to document the lives and memories of the women of her mother's and grandmother's eras; for while the role of women in Southwest has begun to be chronicled, that of Hispanic women largely remains obscure. In Songs My Mother Sang to Me, she has preserved the oral histories of many of these women before they have been lost or forgotten.

Martin's quest took her to ranches, mining towns, and cities throughout southern Arizona, for she sought to document as varied an experience of the contributions of Mexican American women as possible. The interviews covered family history and genealogy, childhood memories, secular and religious traditions, education, work and leisure, environment and living conditions, rites of passage, and personal values. Each of the ten oral histories reflects not only the spontaneity of the interview and personality of each individual, but also the friendship that grew between Martin and her subjects.

Songs My Mother Sang to Me collects voices not often heard and brings to print accounts of social change never previously recorded. These women document more than the details of their own lives; in relating the histories of their ancestors and communities, they add to our knowledge of the culture and contributions of Mexican American people in the Southwest.

The Prophet TheaurauJohn Tany and the English Revolution【電子書籍】[ Ariel Hessayon ]

This is a study of the most fascinating and idiosyncratic of all seventeenth-century figures. Like its famous predecessor The Cheese and The Worms: The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller, it explores the everyday life and mental world of an extraordinary yet humble figure. Born in Lincolnshire with a family of Cambridgeshire origins, Thomas Totney (1608-1659) was a London puritan, goldsmith and veteran of the Civil War. In November 1649, after fourteen weeks of self-abasement, fasting and prayer, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation. Taking the prophetic name TheaurauJohn Tany and declaring himself 'a Jew of the Tribe of Reuben' descended from Aaron the High Priest, he set about enacting a millenarian mission to restore the Jews to their own land. Inspired prophetic gestures followed as Tany took to living in a tent, preaching in the parks and fields around London. He gathered a handful of followers and, in the week that Cromwell was offered the crown, infamously burned his bible and attacked Parliament with sword drawn. In the summer of 1656 he set sail from the Kentish coast, perhaps with some disciples in tow, bound for Jerusalem. He found his way to Holland, perhaps there to gather the Jews of Amsterdam. Some three years later, now calling himself Ram Johoram, Tany was reported lost, drowned after taking passage in a ship from Brielle bound for London. During his prophetic phase Tany wrote a number of remarkable but elusive works that are unlike anything else in the English language. His sources were varied, although they seem to have included almanacs, popular prophecies and legal treatises, as well as scriptural and extra-canonical texts, and the writings of the German mystic Jacob Boehme. Indeed, Tany's writings embrace currents of magic and mysticism, alchemy and astrology, numerology and angelology, Neoplatonism and Gnosticism, Hermeticism and Christian Kabbalah - a ferment of ideas that fused in a millenarian yearning for the hoped for

Sixteen family members, coaches, and friends died with them. Frozen in Time takes you, for the first time ever, inside the lives of these skaters, revealing their friendships and romances, rivalries, sacrifices, and triumphs.

The skaters you’ll read about were the top finishers at the 1961 US National Championships. Winning a medal at Nationals earned each skater passage aboard Sabena Flight 548, a state-of-the-art Boeing 707. The plane would take them to Brussels, where they planned to board a new plane for Prague, host city of the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships. Some of the skaters brought parents or older siblings as chaperones. Coaches and judges also boarded the plane, and some of them brought spouses and children. When the plane crashed in a Belgian field on February 15, entire families were shattered, and the American skating program suffered a staggering blow that threatened to cripple it for many years.

Frozen in Time takes you on a journey to experience the highly competitive US National and North American championships of that fateful year. The Most Interesting Stories of all Nations: French Novels【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Most Interesting Stories of all Nations: French Novels【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

At the beginning of the summer of 1850, a Russian nobleman, Count Kostia Petrovitch Leminof, had the misfortune to lose his wife suddenly, and in the flower of her beauty. She was his junior by twelve years. This cruel loss, for which he was totally unprepared, threw him into a state of profound melancholy; and some months later, seeking to mitigate his grief by the distractions of travel, he left his domains near Moscow, never intending to return. Accompanied by his twin children, ten years of age, a priest who had served them as tutor, and a serf named Ivan, he repaired to Odessa, and then took passage on a merchant ship for Martinique. Disembarking at St. Pierre, he took lodgings in a remote part of the suburbs. The profound solitude which reigned there did not at first bring the consolation he had sought. It was not enough that he had left his native country, he would have changed the planet itself; and he complained that nature everywhere was too much alike. No locality seemed to him sufficiently a stranger to his experience, and in the deserted places, where the desperate restlessness of his heart impelled him, he imagined the reappearance of the obtrusive witnesses of his past joys, and of the misfortune by which they were suddenly terminated. He had lived a year in Martinique when the yellow fever carried off one of his children. By a singular reaction in his vigorous temperament, it was about this time that his somber melancholy gave way to a bitter and sarcastic gayety, more in harmony with his nature. From his early youth he had had a taste for jocularity, a mocking turn of spirit, seasoned by that ironical grace of manner peculiar to the great Moscovite nobleman, and resulting from the constant habit of trifling with men and events. His recovery did not, however, restore the agreeable manners which in former times had distinguished him in his intercourse with the world. Suffering had brought him a leaven of misanthropy, which he did not take the trouble of disguising; his voice had lost its caressing notes and had become rude and abrupt; his actions were brusque, and his smile scornful. Sometimes his bearing gave evidence of a haughty will which, tyrannized over by events, sought to avenge itself upon mankind.
