【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Liberation of Italy, 1815-1870【電子書籍】[ Contess Evelyn Lilian Hazeldine Carrington Martinengo-Cesaresco ]

The unity of Italy, which the statesmen of Europe and all save a small number of the Italians themselves still regarded as an utopia when it was on the verge of accomplishment, was, nevertheless, desired and foreseen by the two greatest intellects produced by the Italian race. Dante conceived an Italy united under the Empire, which returning from a shameful because self-imposed exile would assume its natural seat in Rome. To him it was a point of secondary interest that the Imperial Lord happened to be bred beyond the Alps, that he was of Teutonic, not of Latin blood. If the Emperor brought the talisman of his authority to the banks of the Tiber, Italy would overcome the factions which rent her, and would not only rule herself, but lead mankind. Vast as the vision was, Dante cannot be called presumptuous for having entertained it. The Rome of the C?sars, the Rome of the Popes, had each transformed the world: Italy was transforming it for a third time at that moment by the spiritual awakening which, beginning with the Renaissance, led by inevitable steps to the Reformation. The great Florentine poet had the right to dream that his country was invested with a providential mission, that his people was a chosen people, which, by its own fault and by the fault of others, had lost its way, but would find it again. Such was Dante's so-called Ghibelline programmeーless Ghibelline than intensely and magnificently Italian. His was a mind too mighty to be caged within the limits of partisan ambitions. The same may be said of Machiavelli. He also imagined, or rather discerned in the future, a regenerate Italy under a single head, and this, not the advancement of any particular man, was the grand event he endeavoured to hasten. With the impatience of a heart consumed by the single passion of patriotism, he conjured his fellow-countrymen to seize the first chance that presented itself, promising or unpromising, of reaching the goal. The concluding passage in the Principe was meant as an exhortation; it reads as a prophecy. 'We ought not therefore,' writes Machiavelli, 'to let this occasion pass whereby, after so long waiting, Italy may behold the coming of a saviour. Nor can I express with what love he would be received in all those provinces which have suffered from the foreign inundations; with what thirst of vengeance, with what obstinate faith, with what worship, with what tears! What doors would be closed against him? What people would deny him obedience? What jealousy would oppose him? What Italian would not do him honour? The barbarous dominion of the stranger stinks in the nostrils of all.' Another man of genius, an Italian whom a fortuitous circumstance made the citizen and the master of a country not his own, grasped both the vital necessity of unity from an Italian point of view, and the certainty of its ultimate achievement. Napoleon's notes on the subject, written at St Helena, sum up the whole question without rhetoric but with unanswerable logic: 'Italy is surrounded by the Alps and the sea. Her natural limits are defined with as much exactitude as if she were an island. Italy is only united to the Continent by 150 leagues of frontier, and these 150 leagues are fortified by the highest barrier that can be opposed to man. Italy, isolated between her natural limits, is destined to form a great and powerful nation. Italy is one nation; unity of customs, language and literature must, within a period more or less distant, unite her inhabitants under one sole government. And Rome will, without the slightest doubt, be chosen by the Italians as their capital.'

Badge 112 is the story of a restless boy orphaned in high school, and his unlikely passage from juvenile delinquent to decorated police officer. When Peter Stipe finds his mother after her suicide, it leaves him scarred and isolated. After a couple of brushes with the law, his dad sends him off to Culver Military Academy to provide structure and discipline. In a whirlwind final summer, he found himself paired with the most beautiful girl on campus and clashing with the commandant. This pattern of behavior would define his years in high school. At 17, his father’s sudden death from cancer cast him adrift.

After beginning work in a warehouse, Stipe is soon befriended by a firefighter who’d lost his only son to combat in Vietnam. The father figure took the aimless youth under his wing, instilling a tireless work ethic while suggesting a career in civil service. Though his spell of misdirection continued, Stipe heeded the advice and found himself working for the Building Department, enforcing city codes and inspecting houses.

Trained in every aspect of code enforcement, his laid-back style was effective with business owners, landlords and residents. But he saw the grim effects of poverty first hand, exposed to wretched living conditions. The homes and apartments he inspected were so filthy, he had to strip his clothes off outside when he got home. However, assignments all over town enabled him to learn Ann Arbor like the back of his hand.

His skill in code-enforcement led to a personal recruitment by Ann Arbor’s Police Chief to become an officer. A 29-year-old rookie, Stipe left his mark, combining instinct, orientation and superb fitness to catch criminals and save lives. He confronts the memory of his own mother’s death by handling the suicides of several more victims, many to gunfire. His negotiation skills spare the lives of many more.

While on the force, Stipe embarked on a series of high-profile arrests, high-speed pursuits, foot chases, bank robberies, hostage situations, homicides, life and death struggles and harrowing rescues. In 1994, a serial killer investigation exposed the strained racial tensions between the police and the public they serve. Stipe and the killer confront one another in court.

Stipe’s tactical training results in his assignment as the point man on the SWAT Team. He engages in a sequence of armed encounters, some at point blank range. The peak in his career is toppled by a turbulent marriage to an unfaithful wife, an ill-fated affair with an attractive partner, and the tragic drowning of two teenage girls, trapped in a submerged car.

When the veteran officer bottomed out and became immune to hope and humor, he was rescued from the brink by a succession of intuitive patrol partners and the girl that sold him coffee. Badge 112 is about survival in the darkest corners of society, and about a cop turning tragedy and adversity into hope and redemption in the dim light of life on his patrol beat.

Moruga Tales by June Lee-Sing Khan
ISBN: 978-0-9878256-3-6 (eBook)
Second Edition eBook published May 2021

The author spent her early years in the village of Grand Chemin in the district of Moruga. Grand Chemin is a seaside village on the south coast of Trinidad and to this day it is still very rural in nature, forgotten by Time and the Government.

She grew up hearing the stories of the strange and supernatural creatures that haunted the area and filled the inhabitants with dread and wonder. It was with hair-raising excitement and anticipation that she listened to these stories told by school friends and others, and her imagination ran wild as she experienced vicariously the exploits of the heroes who lived to tell the tale.

The “doorstep group” in the tales is composed of young people and children. Some of the names of the people in this group are of actual people she knew in the village and she uses these people to tell the stories. However, the stories they tell are pure fiction and they never really experienced whatever befell the characters in them. For example, June (the author) told a story of douens but she never saw one and Cecil surely never met a real diablesse. As well, the characters in the stories that the group tells are all fictitious and bear no resemblance to anyone extant. The stories come from the author’s imagination while using the folklore of Moruga as a framework upon which to flesh out the characters and the plots. As for the tale about the mermaid, that is the author’s own story. Indeed, the only mermaid she had ever heard anything about was the one from Hans Christian Andersen.

With the passage of time, it is possible that the oral tradition of storytelling may die out and important folklore may be lost. The author remembers the thrill and excitement of the story-telling sessions of her childhood and in her later years has decided to share her experiences.

In this second edition of Moruga Tales, two new tales have been added. The stories are printed in the order in which they were written so the reader may notice a change in narration style as the stories progress. The first two stories are written in the Trini dialect of the 1940's and are not too complicated. The later stories are basically in third person format with the dialect appearing when the characters speak. The last two were written after the publication of the original book and the author hopes that these will continue to grip your imagination. They are in a slightly different vein from the others and do not take place in Grand Chemin and environs (neither does Tale #9 where the setting is anywhere in Trinidad). Their locations, however, are still in the large area called Moruga.

Dim your lights, turn off the television, radio and computer, shut down the cell phone and take the landline off the hook. Light a candle and surround yourself in an aura of mystery. Now, remove yourself to a time and place remote from today’s hustle and bustle. Read, laugh and be entertained!

Weary of family conflicts and social friction, Brenna used every bit of her charm and wit to convince her husband, Garrick, that they should attend a music festival in the Nordan Coastal Colony. Neither of them had ever seen the ocean, and since their honeymoon had been cut short by his last deployment, Garrick finally agreed to go.

An expert musician, Brenna had never lost a piano competition in her life. Hours of daily practice, studying music theory and dedication to excellence endowed her skills that secretly bolstered the reticent woman's need for affirmation. She wanted to attend the festival, but for all the wrong reasons.

Garrick, with an especially difficult deployment behind him, is gradually recovering from combat trauma. His hypervigilance worries and wearies his wife, who too often takes the brunt of his impatience and paranoia. But the opposition he expressed to attending this music festival was rooted in the mysterious nature of Brenna's invitation. Why would a distant music festival invite her, when she hadn't competed in several years? Something about this particular festival bothered him.

A secretive and wealthy society of Kamerese business interests and ideologues has smuggled arms into the Nordan Colony and provided training for locals who have long chafed under Nordan rule. Eager to drag their war-weary ally, the Republic of Tamaria, into the conflict, the music festival serves as a trap to lure Brenna -- who has also earned Tamaria's highest honor for valor in combat -- to her death. Believing that her demise would serve as a catalyst to prompt Tamaria into war, Los Patrones del Estado pushes local insurgents to violently overthrow Nordan rule.

The resulting conflict is brutal, unpredictable and fraught with uncertain alliances. No one expected Garrick and Brenna to fight back. No one expected them to survive.

Relying on faith, their wits and military training, the amorous couple flee the conflict. Unable to read or speak the language, they strive to cross the border into nearby Kameron, where they expect to find safety among their allies for an uneventful return home. Members of Los Patrones, however, have other ideas.

Along the way, Garrick and Brenna rescue four orphaned children, whose father tried to abuse Brenna when she was a maiden. Caring for these young ones constrains the lovers' marital conduct and significantly complicates their efforts to escape.

Who can they trust? Can others trust them? Join the lovers as they seek safe passage across a hostile border while their way is obscured by Blood on the Warpath.

The Machine Stops is a short science fiction story signed by Edward Morgan Forster (A Passage to India) that describes a world in which almost all humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a 'cell', a standard room below ground, with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine.

Those who do not accept the deity of the Machine are viewed as 'unmechanical' and are threatened with "Homelessness". Eventually, the Machine apocalyptically collapses, and the civilization of the Machine comes to an end.

The story, written in 1909, has proved to be far ahead of its time, with remarkably accurate predictions of modern technologies and their over-dependence on them. As well as Forster's predicting globalisation, the internet, video conferencing, and other aspects of 21st-Century reality, ex-BBC's arts editor, Will Gompertz writing on the BBC website on 30 May 2020 and said: "The Machine Stops is not simply prescient; it is a jaw-droppingly, gob-smackingly, breath-takingly accurate literary description of lockdown life in 2020."

English novelist and essayist, Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970) was also known for his ironic novels examining class difference in early 20th-century British society. A Passage to India (1924) brought him his greatest success and he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 16 different years.

The Machine Stops ebook was developed by Atl?ntico Press, a publisher company present in the global editorial market, since 1992.

I was sure that I had seen Edwin Lawrence juggle with the pack. As I lay there wide awake in bed it all came back to me. I wondered how I could have been such an unspeakable idiot. We had dined together at the Trocadero; then we had gone on to the Empire. The big music hall was packed with people, the heat was insufferable.
“Let’s get out of this,” suggested Lawrence, almost as soon as we were in. “This crush, in this atmosphere, is not to be borne.” I agreed with him. We left. “Come into my place for an hour,” he said.
We both lived in Imperial Mansions, on the same floor. His number was 64, mine was 79. You went out of his door, along the passage, round the corner to the rightーthe second door on the right was mine. I went in with him.
“What do you say to a little gamble?” he asked. “It will be better than nothing.”
I agreed. We had a little gambleーat first for trivial stakes. I am an abstemious man. I had already drunk more than I was accustomed to. At his invitation I drank still more. We increased the stakes. I really do not know from whom the suggestion came, I know that I did not object. I had lost all my ready money. I kept on losing. He was dotting down, on a piece of paper, the extent of my indebtedness. Presently, when he announced the sum total, I was amazed to learn that it was very much more than I imaginedーactually nearly a thousand pounds.
A Life in the Saddle is an expansion on the account Rev. Davie Hogan left of his own life, which he entitled: Autobiography of David Hogan (1811-1899). The author will quote directly from this work in the following format, as in the following opening passage:

I propose on this the 16th day of February A.D. 1899, in the 88th year of my life, to continue the work of writing a biographic sketch of my life, from a very imperfect, or partially kept diary. I will here state, this work is only intended as a manuscript for the information of my children, grandchildren, and those who in the future may be interested in the history this writing may afford. I have tried to keep as far from self-laudation as possible. I therefore pray that whosoever may consult or read it, if they think they see a spirit of exultation, they will account for it, on other grounds than intention of the writer.

The rest of the text is comprised of quotes from other sources and background information researched and compiled by the author. Davie wrote for an audience with a base of shared experience and knowledge mostly lost to contemporary readers. The author has attempted to fill out Hogan's often terse or detail lacking account with the wealth of information on history, family members, and local color his ancestor neglected to include. By the way, the author, Brian Hogan, is Rev. Hogan's third great grandnephew.

The North-West Passage had thwarted the attempts of many expeditions by the mid nineteenth century, but none were so famous as the disappearance of Sir John Franklin and his crew. After two years with no word, a 〓20,000 reward was offered to anyone who could find the expedition, leading to many rescue missions. One such attempt was the search mission of 1850?1 under Horatio Thomas Austin, which Naval officer Sherard Osborn (1822?75) took part in. I went in with him. “What do you say to a little gamble?” he asked. “It will be better than nothing.” I agreed. On the instant I was wide awake. “Nine hundred and forty pounds, Lawrence! It can’t be as much as that!” “My dear chap, here are the figures; look for yourself.” He handed me the piece of paper. His manner of arranging the several amounts I found more than a little vague, but as I had been so foolish as not to have kept count of them myself, I was hardly in a position to dispute their accuracy; and, added together, they certainly did come to the sum he stated. Still I felt persuaded that there was a mistake somewhere, though in what it consisted I was unable at the moment to perceive. “Look here,” he said. “Be a sportsman for once in your life! I’ll give you a chanceーI’ll cut you double or quits.” I did not want to. I would have very much rather not. Gambling on such a scale was altogether out of my way. But he urged me, and I yielded; I don’t know why. I must have been very much more under the influence of drink than I imagined. We cut. I cut firstーthe knave of diamonds. As it was to be highest, not a bad card. I watched him as he cut, and saw that he dropped at least one card from the lot which he picked up; and that after he had had an opportunity of getting a shrewd guess at its value. The card which he faced was the queen of diamonds, exclaiming as he did so: “That does you!” “But that was not the card which you originally cutーyou dropped one.” “I dropped one! What do you mean? I have not the slightest notion of having done anything of the kind, and, anyhow, it must have been by the sheerest accident. What are you looking at me like that for? Don’t lose your temper because you happen to have lost.” The insinuation was as gratuitous as it was uncalled for. There was not the slightest danger of my losing my temper; but that I was right in what I had said I felt assured. But then the card might have been dropped by accident, and he might not have noticed what had happened. And, anyhow, in face of the fact that I had been with the man on terms of intimacy, and had never before had cause to suspect him of anything in the least dishonourable, having regard to his explicit denial, it was a delicate position to persist in. I got up from my chair, conceding the point. “That makes eighteen hundred and eighty pounds you owe me. My sympathy, Ferguson; better luck next time.” I mentally resolved that I would not play cards again with Edwin Lawrenceーat any rate, when we two were alone.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Frozen Deep and Miss or Mrs【電子書籍】[ Wilkie Collins ]

"The Frozen Deep": The play's genesis lay in the conflict between Dickens and John Rae's report on the fate of the Franklin expedition. In May 1845, the "Franklin expedition" left England in search of the Northwest Passage. It was last seen in July 1845, after which the members of the expedition were lost without trace. In October 1854, John Rae (using reports from "Eskimo" (Inuit) eyewitnesses, who informed that they had seen 40 "white men" and later 35 corpses) described the fate of the Franklin expedition in a confidential report to the Admiralty: "From the mutilated state of many of the corpses and the contents of the kettles it is evident that our wretched countrymen had been driven to the last resourceーcannibalismーas a means of prolonging survival." Miss or Mrs.: Another crisp short novel from Wilkie Collins. As one who distrusts the institution of matrimony, he gives us another example of the somewhat strange Victorian marriage laws. The heroine of Miss or Mrs.?, Natalie, is fifteen years old. Her family wants her to wed Richard Turlington, a failing businessman who wants access to Natalie's father's fortune to save his hide. Natalie hates Turlington and secretly marries Launcelot Linzie, her cousin, who is unable to legally elope with her until her sixteenth birthday. Collins is a past master of knowing how to milk a complicated plot to good effect. Well worth reading.

This new collection of interconnected essays marches to a provocative premise: what if one way to understand your life was to examine the objects within it? Which objects would you choose? What memories do they hold? And lined up in a row, what stories do they have to tell?

In recalling her experience, Dinah's essays each begin with one thing ー real or imaginary, lost or found, rare or ordinary, animal, vegetable, mineral, edible. Each object comes with a memory or a story, and so sparks an opportunity for rue or reflection or confession or revelation, having to do with her coming of age as a daughter, mother, actor, and writer: the piano that holds secrets to family history and inheritance; the gifted watches that tell so much more than time; the little black dress that carries all of youth's love and longing; the purple scarf that stands in for her journey from New York to Los Angeles, across stage and screen, to pursue her acting dream.

Read together or apart, the essays project the bountiful mosaic of life and love, of moving to Los Angeles and raising a family; of coming to terms with place, relationship, failures, and success; of dealing with up?ended notions about home and family and career and aging, too. Taken together, they add up to a pastiche of an artful and quirky life, lovingly remembered, compellingly told, wrapped up in the ties that bind the passage of time.

The Severs are a family in turmoil. They are David, his teens Cassie and Jeff, and Carolyn, his estranged wife. David and Cassie possess latent abilities they toyed with when she was a child, dabbling unwittingly with a technique known as dream-walking.

Presently they find themselves doing it again, coinciding with dreams David is having of a circular cross shape and a Templar Knight. David's eccentricities surrounding his dream world are wreaking havoc throughout his family life. Carolyn seeks out new age church alternatives as her solution, while David is opposed.

Cassie cares little for either, but is drawn to her father's dreams, and begins to share in them. Desiring only family preservation, her brother Jeff allies with their mother and her new found mentor Murro Vogt, a charlatan leader of a church known as The Gateway. As Vogt takes the two under his wing, his true motives in engaging this family, because of their ancestry line to the Knights Templar, slowly emerge.

Cassie's allegiance to her father and his resistance towards Vogt brings the two sides towards collision course, leading to Cassie's introduction to Sandra Nikells, a psychic consultant to the police department. Nikells appears when a tragedy of Vogt's making strikes the family. She coaches Cassie and David in the art of dream walking and the use of dream gates. As these skills are honed, the mystery of David's dream cross circles become clearer. They are revealed to be gateways of cross-over passage to the other side.

It is to this end, a mission pre-destined to the family Severs by their connection to the Templar Grand Master Peter de Severy, that their road of discovery leads. And once upon it, there is no turning back. The very author of the faith they wrestle over is the ONE who sets them forth on a tumultuous journey into the spiritual realm. Fraught with dark dangers and entities, they march into the unknown to find that which was lost, and unravel the secrets of the Cross Gate!

A poet and essayist attempt to find their bearings in a civilization lost at sea.

Dead reckoning is the nautical term for calculating a ship's position using the distance and direction traveled rather than instruments or astronomical observation. For those still recovering from the atrocities of the twentieth century, however, the term has an even grimmer meaning: toting up the butcher's bill of war and genocide.

As its title suggests, Dead Reckoning is an attempt to find our bearings in a civilization lost at sea. Conducted in the shadow of the centennial of the First World War, this dialogue between Romanian American poet Andrei Guruianu and Italian American essayist Anthony Di Renzo asks whether Western culture will successfully navigate the difficult waters of the new millennium or shipwreck itself on the mistakes of the past two centuries. Using historical and contemporary examples, they explore such topics as the limitations of memory, the transience of existence, the futility of history, and the difficulties of making art and meaning in the twenty-first century.

Aboard the Nellie, anchored in the River Thames near Gravesend, Charles Marlow tells his fellow sailors how he became captain of a river steamboat for an ivory trading company. As a child, Marlow had been fascinated by "the blank spaces" on maps, particularly by the biggest, which by the time he had grown up was no longer blank but turned into "a place of darkness". Yet there remained a big river, "resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country and its tail lost in the depths of the land". The image of this river on the map fascinated Marlow "as a snake would a bird". Feeling as though "instead of going to the centre of a continent I were about to set off for the centre of the earth", Marlow takes passage on a French steamer bound for the African coast and then into the interior. After more than thirty days the ship anchors off the seat of government near the mouth of the big river. Marlow, with 200 mi (320 km) to go yet, takes passage on a little sea-going steamer captained by a Swede. He departs some 30 mi (50 km) up the river where his company's station is. Work on the railway is going on, involving removal of rocks with explosives. Marlow enters a narrow ravine to stroll in the shade under the trees, and finds himself in "the gloomy circle of some Inferno": the place is full of diseased Africans who worked on the railroad and now lie sick and gaunt, awaiting death. Marlow witnesses the scene "horror-struck".

“... I am now busy winding up everything and will leave London about the 23rd inst. for Falmouth from whence I shall sail in the packet the first week in October and be with you, I hope, in November, perhaps about the 14th, my birthday, so you must have a roast goose ready. The packet, being well manned and provided will be more commodious and safe for an autumn passage, and I think there will be little or no risk; at least I prefer taking all the risk there is to idling here a winter. But although there is not much risk, yet accidents may happen, and that the produce of my studies and experience may not be lost to my country, I have made out a complete set of drawings and descriptions of my whole system of submarine attack.... These with my will, I shall put in a tin cylinder, sealed and leave them in the care of General Lyman, not to be opened unless I am lost. Should such an event happen, I have left you the means to publish these works, with engravings, in a handsome manner, and to which you will add your own ideasーshowing how the liberty of the seas may be gained by such means.” Thus Robert Fulton wrote to Joel Barlow who had been his close friend and faithful guide since his arrival in Paris in 1797. The letter of which the above is but an extract is dated London, September, 1806, and was written, as the context shows, on the eve of his final departure from England, after a residence abroad of nearly twenty years. General Lyman to whom he referred had been appointed American Consul in London in 1805, in which capacity he served until he died in 1811. Joel Barlow was in his day a person of considerable importance. Born in 1754, in Connecticut, educated at Dartmouth and Yale, he first studied theology and then law. Though he practised these professions in turn for a short time, he retired from both to devote himself to literature. In 1788, he went to London and Paris to market some lands in Ohio, an unfortunate undertaking. While in Europe, he became interested in liberal politics, even to the extent of standing as a candidate for election to the French Convention of 1793. After having acquired a competence in commerce, and after a short but highly creditable service as American Consul at Algiers, he returned to Paris and resumed his literary life, his principal production being a poem entitled, “The Columbiad.” In 1805, he returned to America, remaining there until 1811, when he was appointed American Commissioner to Emperor Napoleon. He joined the latter at Vilna in 1812, during the Russian campaign and, as the result of exposure to inclement conditions on the disastrous retreat from Moscow in the same year, died in Poland on Christmas eve. Barlow was enough older than Fulton to be accepted not only as a friend, but as a counsellor, while his character, experience and views on world questions appealed to the enthusiastic younger American in whom there was curiously blended a high development of an artistic temperament and scientific genius, and who was in thorough sympathy with the extreme liberal movement of the period that Barlow to some extent approved. When Fulton arrived in Paris in 1797, he at once called on Barlow. The two men were mutually attracted and there soon sprang up an intimacy that was to develop into the most affectionate friendship. This intimacy has been compared to that existing between father and son, or rather between parents and son because Mrs. Barlow joined with her husband in taking Fulton into their lives. This they did the more readily as they had no children of their own. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Survivor's Guide to the Dinosaur Apocalypse, Episode Seven: "'Dog' is a Palindrome" A Survivor's Guide to the Dinosaur Apocalypse, #7【電子書籍】[ Wayne Kyle Spitzer ]

Welcome to the Big Empty, the world after the Flashback ... a world in which most the population has vanished and where dinosaurs roam freely. You can survive here, if you're lucky, and if you're not in the wrong place at the wrong time--which is everywhere and all the time. But what you'll never do is remain the same--for this is a world whose very purpose is to change you: for better or for worse. So take a deep dive into these loosely connected tales of the Dinosaur Apocalypse (each of which can be read individually or as a part of the greater saga): tales of wonder and terror, death and survival, blood ... and beauty. Do it today ... before the apocalypse comes.

* * *

"You're a fool, Nick Callahan. A fool. But I suppose you already knew that."

I allowed my hand to drop before plunking down in the fir needles and just staring into space. "There was nothing. I saw nothing. Itーit was like he didn't even exist."

She sat down next to me and exhaled, tiredly.

"He's an animalーwhat did you expect?" She picked up my glove and offered it to me, but I didn't take it. "You said it yourself; it's like they see memories. The eyes. I don't imagine a dog has a particularly long one. Do you?"

I sighed. All I knew for certain was that I felt numb and more than a little tired. "I don't know. I don't know what I expected. Or what I was looking for. An incident, maybe. Some kind of clue."

She laid her head on my shoulder and stared at nothing, same as me. "What kind? A clue to what?"

"That's just itーI don't know. A clue to what might wake him up, I guess. Something I could say. Something that was important to him."

"His butt was important to him," she said. "A source of endless fascination."

I had to smile.

That's when it happened. That's when he yelped, ever so slightly, and his paw twitched.

I looked at Lisa and she looked back. And then my hand was on him and we were runningーPuck and Iーdown cobblestone lanes lined with streetlamps and through pools of foggy light; through tides of rusted Maple leaves, which leapt and swirled as we passed.

"What is it?" I heard Lisa say, her voice growing smaller, more distant. "What do you see?"

I turned to look at Puck as we ran and saw his tongue loll and his eyes shiftーas though he wanted to look behind himselfーbehind usーbut didn't dare.

"Fear," I said. "Confusion." An image entered my mind of a dug passage beneath the rear wall of the T.J. Maxx; of the turkey-like thing crawling through it with Puck hot on its heels. "He escaped from beneath the wall and now he's lost somewhere in the fog. And he's terrified … but of what I don't know. It's almost likeーwait a minute. Wait a minute." I looked behind himーhaving heard something huffing and snortingーand saw a fully-grown therapod dinosaur (colored orange and black, like a Gila monster) bounding after us in the dark, gaining rapidly. "There's something comingーsome kind of predator. An allosaur, I think. Whatever it is, it's closing, and I mean fast."

The Palimpsests of Dream is a mosaic story made up of eleven short stories, each describing one dream.

Eleven dreams, written in different sections of space and time, intertwine to tell us the legend of a lost manuscript that holds the ancient secret of creation.

She, that does not exist, carried the world of words through a dream. She stored her poems somewhere in the desert. The only signposts to the book that represents the beginning and end of everything are the moon, stars, and cross. The map leading to the words-built temple is inscribed in the ancient arcane of tarot cards.

From one card to another, the passage leads through a dream.

A FINE old door of oak, a heavy door standing deep within a portico inside of which you might have driven a coach, brings you to the residence of Mrs. Brewster. The hall was dark and small, the only light admitted to it being from windows of stained glass; numberless passages branched off from the hall, one peculiarity being that you could scarcely enter a single room in it but you must first go down a passage, short or long, to get to it; had the house been designed by an architect with a head upon his shoulders and a little common sense within it, he might have made a respectable house to say the least; as it was, the rooms were cramped and narrow, cornered and confined, and the good space was taken up by these worthless passages; a plat of ground before it was crowded with flowers, far too crowded for good taste, as the old gardener would point out to her, but Mrs. Brewster loved flowers and would not part with one of them. Being the daughter of a carpenter and the wife of a merchant tailor, she had scrambled through life amidst bustle and poverty, moving from one house to another, never settled anywhere for long. It was an existence not to be envied, although it is the lot of many. She was Mrs. Brewster and her husband was not a very good husband to her; he was rather too fond of amusing himself, and threw all the care upon her shoulders; she spent her time nursing her sickly children and endeavouring to make one dollar go as far as two. One day, to her unspeakable embarrassment, she found herself changed from a poor woman in moderate circumstances to an heiress to a certain degree, her father having received a legacy from a relative, and upon his death it was willed to her. She had much sorrow, having lost one child after another, until she had but two left. Then she lost her husband and father; then settled at Bellville near her husband’s native place, upon her limited means. All she possessed was the interest upon this sum her father had left her, the whole not exceeding 2,000. She had two daughters, Mary Ann and Janey; the contrast between them was great, you could see it most remarkably as they sat together, and her love for them was as contrasted as light is with darkness. Mary Ann she regarded with an inordinate affection amounting almost to a passion; for Janey she did not care; what could be the reason of this; what is the reason that parents, many such may be found, will love some of their children and dislike others they cannot tell any more than she could; ask them and they will be unable to give you an answer. It does not lie in the children; it often happens that those obtaining the least love will be the most deserving of it. Such was the case here. Mary Ann Brewster was a pale, sickly, fretful girl, full of whims, full of complaints, giving trouble to everybody about her. Janey, with her sweet countenance and her merry heart, made the sunshine of her home; she bore with her sister’s exacting moods, she bore with her mother’s want of love, she loved them both and waited on them, and carrolled forth her snatches of song as she moved around the house, and was as happy as the day was long. Ask the servantsーthey kept only twoーand they would tell you that Mrs. Brewster was cross and selfish, but Miss Janey was worth her weight in gold; the gold was soon to be transplanted to a home where it would be appreciated and cherished, for Janey was the affianced wife of Charles Taylor. For nearly a mile beyond Bellville lived Charles Taylor, a quiet, refined gentleman, and the son of a wealthy capitalist; his father had not only made a fortune of his own, but had several bestowed upon him; he had died several years before this time, and his wife survived him one year. There were three sisters, a cousin and two servants that had lived in this family for a number of years.

"Ismael, a mature man, reconciles himself with death. Thanks to this, he can begin a journey into the past to encounter once more the day when, as a child, a special teacher led him to witness life experiences of others, of real people. Some of these experiences were painful, others not, but all were crucial to understanding our path through this world. Sometimes, though, that understanding requires the passage of time, the acceptance of our limitations, or the recognition that the transcendent awaits us within ourselves, even if we are lost in the darkest of caves.''
