The Family Robinson Crusoe【電子書籍】[ Johann David Wyss ]

It is well known that a Swiss, Counsellor Horner of Zurich, sailed some years ago round the world on board a Russian vessel, the Podesta, commanded by Captain Kreusenstern. They discovered a number of islands, and one among the rest of a considerable size and great fertility, situate to the south-west of Java, near the coast of Papua or New Guinea, hitherto unknown to navigators, and which appeared to them worthy to be examined. They landed accordingly; and to the great surprise of the crew, but particularly of Mr. Horner, they found this island, which they had conceived to be uninhabited, already in the possession of a European family, who met them on the bank, and saluted them in German. The family consisted of a father, a mother, and four sons of a robust and active appearance, who willingly communicated to Mr. Horner the history of their adventures. The father had been a pastor or clergyman of West Switzerland, who having lost his fortune in the Revolution of 1798, and reflecting on the family he had to bring up, resolved to become a voluntary exile, and to seek in other climates the means of support. He sailed accordingly with his wife and children, four sons, from twelve to five years of age, for England, where he accepted an appointment of missionary to Otaheite; not that he had any desire to take up his abode in that island, but that he had conceived the plan of passing from thence to Port Jackson, and domiciliating himself there as a free settler. He possessed a considerable knowledge of agriculture, and, with the aid of his sons, he hoped to gain for himself there that advantageous establishment, which his own country, convulsed with the horrors of war, denied him. He turned all that yet remained to him into money, and then vested his little property in seeds of various sorts and a few cattle, as a farming stock. The family took their passage accordingly, satisfied with this consolation that they should still remain together, and sailed with favourable winds till they came in sight of New Guinea. Here they were attacked by a most destructive and unrelenting tempest; and it is in this crisis of their adventures that the Swiss Pastor, or Family Robinson Crusoe, begins the journal, which he liberally consigned to the care of Mr. Horner, who carried it with him into Switzerland; and from the manuscript, thus brought over from one of the remotest parts of the earth, the following narrative has been faithfully printed.

Heart of Darkness【電子書籍】[ Joseph Conrad ]

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a short novel by Joseph Conrad, written as a frame narrative, about Charles Marlow's life as an ivory transporter down the Congo River in Central Africa. The river is "a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land." In the course of his travel in central Africa, Marlow becomes obsessed with Mr. Kurtz. The story is a complex exploration of the attitudes people hold on what constitutes a barbarian versus a civilized society and the attitudes on colonialism and racism that were part and parcel of European imperialism. Originally published as a three-part serial story, in Blackwood's Magazine, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century. Short Summary Aboard the Nellie, anchored in the River Thames near Gravesend, England, Charles Marlow tells his fellow sailors about the events that led to his appointment as captain of a river-steamboat for an ivory trading company. He describes his passage on ships to the wilderness to the Company's station, which strikes Marlow as a scene of devastation: disorganized, machinery parts here and there, periodic demolition explosions, weakened native black men who have been demoralized, in chains, literally being worked to death, and strolling behind them a white Company man in a uniform carrying a rifle. At this station Marlow meets the Company's chief accountant who tells him of a Mr. Kurtz, and explains that Kurtz is a first-class agent.

Pellucidar is a fictional Hollow Earth milieu invented by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs for a series of action adventure stories. In a notable crossover event between Burroughs' series, there is a Tarzan story in which the Ape Man travels into Pellucidar. The stories initially involve the adventures of mining heir David Innes and his inventor friend Abner Perry after they use an "iron mole" to burrow 500 miles into the Earth's crust. Later protagonists include indigenous cave man Tanar and additional visitors from the surface world, notably Tarzan, Jason Gridley, and Frederich Wilhelm Eric von Mendeldorf und von Horst. Geography: In Burroughs' concept, the Earth is a hollow shell with Pellucidar as the internal surface of that shell. Pellucidar is accessible to the surface world via a polar opening allowing passage between the inner and outer worlds through which a rigid airship visits in the fourth book of the series. Although the inner surface of the Earth has an absolute smaller area than the outer, Pellucidar actually has a greater land area, as its continents mirror the surface world's oceans and its oceans mirror the surface continents. A peculiarity of Pellucidar's geography is that due to the concave curvature of its surface there is no horizon; the further distant something is, the higher it appears to be, until it is finally lost in the atmospheric haze. Pellucidar is lit by a miniature sun suspended at the center of the hollow sphere, so it is perpetually overhead wherever one is in Pellucidar. The sole exception is the region directly under a tiny geostationary moon of the internal sun; that region as a result is under a perpetual eclipse and is known as the Land of Awful Shadow. This moon has its own plant life and (presumably) animal life, and hence either has its own atmosphere or shares that of Pellucidar. The miniature sun never changes in brightness, and never sets; so with no night or seasonal progression, the natives have little concept of time. The events of the series suggest that time is elastic, passing at different rates in different areas of Pellucidar and varying even in single locales.

The ghost of Jean Valjean【電子書籍】[ Lorenzo di Gaio ]

This text can be considered a fantastic work, a thriller, or a fairy tale. Why, it all depends on our reading grid. A social novel, or a melodrama without music. It's a drama with a popular tone where twists and turns accumulate that no one expects. It is a modern thriller, the suspense will surprise the reader.

Antonio is an Italian immigrant, he arrived in France 30 years ago, he is around fifty years old. It comes from Mezzo, southern Italy. She misses him, her heart is still there, France is not a choice, but a necessity.

He lives in the Paris suburbs, in Montreuil, in Seine Saint-Denis. He works in the sewer service of the city of Paris, fixed-term employment contracts of six months, he no longer counts them. Over the past 20 years, he has reached the milestone of forty contracts.

He is a hero in spite of himself, he does not have the makings, he is a heartless individual, he reveals empathy towards those who have nothing. He's not a brawny guy with no brains.

Every morning, he goes to Paris by metro, in the eleventh arrondissement of Paris. Historic Paris opens the doors to him. The Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the Place de la Bastille, the Petite and Grande Roquette and the Boulevard de M?nilmontant belong to the world, these places are linked to history. The storming of the Bastille symbolizes the fall of arbitrariness, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

No matter where he goes, the past winks at him, other names continue the wonder, the cemetery of P?re Lachaise, Beaubourg, the marsh. These are emblematic places of the capital.

But the story takes place underground. It is the underground city without Paris of cockroaches, rats, bad smells, the sun is absent, a pale light illuminates the walls. Jean Valjean crossed it. Here, we are not talking about the pedestrianization of the capital.

At sunrise, at the Square de la Roquette, he meets a homeless person, it's a woman, her name is Marcelle. Life across the street has faded its shine, it is a flower that has lost its beauty. His dull, laughterless face engenders pity. He chats with her about the passage of time. He places a loaf of bread next to her without saying a word, and leaves.

His job consists of monitoring, repairing the pipes, maintaining the sewers, the bad smell bothers him, in the evening, he takes the air, he breathes. The Parisian air allows it to chase away the bad odors of this underground city. He speaks of an abyss every time he descends.

One day, he sees a shadow, he convinces himself that it is the ghost of Jean Valjean, Victor Hugo wrote that he was mayor of Montreuil. The shadow drags a paw, Jean Valjean too.

Whispers in the Shadows【電子書籍】[ cullen streich ]

The night hung heavy with an air of mystique, a velvet curtain pulled over the world, shrouding it in darkness. In the heart of the city, where the whispers of the past intertwined with the shadows of the present, a tale unfolded. This was no ordinary night; it was the unveiling of secrets long concealed beneath layers of time and emotion

The city streets echoed with the distant murmur of footsteps, each one a testament to the lives that traversed the labyrinth of destiny. Among the bustling crowds, a solitary figure emergedーa woman draped in midnight hues, her eyes a reflection of the enigma that gripped her soul. She moved with purpose, guided by a force unseen, as if following the ethereal echo of a long-forgotten promise.

As the woman traversed the cobbled streets, the buildings whispered tales of bygone eras. Ephemeral echoes of laughter, sorrow, and passion resonated through the bricks and mortar.

It was as though the very essence of the city yearned to communicate, to reveal its hidden stories to those willing to listen.

The woman's journey led her to a forgotten alley, a clandestine passage veiled by the tendrils of ivy that seemed to guard its secrets. Here, the echoes intensified, wrapping around her like a cloak. The alley's end revealed an ancient door adorned with symbols lost to time. With a hesitating breath, she pushed it open, stepping into a realm where reality and illusion danced in a macabre waltz.

Within, the room pulsed with an otherworldly energy. Shadows flickered across the walls, casting fleeting images of a history written in whispers. In the center stood an ornate mirror, its frame adorned with symbols that mirrored those on the door. As the woman approached, the mirror shimmered, reflecting not her physical form but the essence of her desires and fears.

The mirror whispered secretsーher secrets. It revealed the tapestry of her life, woven with threads of love, betrayal, and a hunger for the forbidden. Each revelation resonated with the ephemeral echoes of the city, creating a harmony that transcended time itself.

As the mirror wove its tale, the room became bathed in a crimson glow. The air thickened with anticipation, a prelude to the unveiling of a symphony of emotions that had long been suppressed. The woman's reflection morphed, merging with the shadows, becoming a silhouette against the backdrop of a city that had witnessed centuries of clandestine affairs and concealed passions.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Summary of Friends,Lovers,And The Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry A Comprehensive Summary【電子書籍】[ thomas francis ]

Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry

This book gave me such a serious whiplash as I was understanding it. Perry swings ridiculously this way and that between having a transparent discussion about his enslavement, extreme navel looking and back taps about his distinction, faulting others in his life for his compulsion or length of dependence and afterward in the following passage making liability regarding his fixation and moves, and abnormal awkward remarks about ladies in his day-to-day existence. As somebody who has experienced AA, has done the means, and has been level-headed for a considerable length of time myself, I think perhaps Matthew Perry ought to have taken somewhat more time in his connectedness to reflect and sit with himself before composing a book. I'm glad for him and his connectedness, I know how hard it very well may be to remain sober, and particularly, I can envision with the degree of distinction he has and had during the 90s the tension is by all accounts extraordinary. I genuinely hope everything turns out great for him, karma in his connectedness this time around. Furthermore, I'm additionally happy he is openly about being a drunkard and a junkie since it's so disparaged even in 2022 and this book is worth the effort on the off chance that it assists only one individual with seeking help for their addiction. Reads like a first draft; conflicting, repetitive, out of control sequentially. At a certain point, I really thought I'd lost my place and was re-perusing a previous section.

Grab a copy and learn more!

Enchanted by the undersea world of her childhood, she excels in marine biology, traveling the globe to study ancient organisms. The Triumph of Death at Pisa and Premonitions【電子書籍】[ Frank Cebulski ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Triumph of Death at Pisa and Premonitions【電子書籍】[ Frank Cebulski ]

The famous frescos in the Campo Santo at Pisa painted in the 1340's include striking images of "The Triumph of Death," "The Devil," "Hell", and "The Last Judgement." The cemetery of the Campo Santo contains shiploads of earth imported from the Holy Land. The Campo Santo was damaged by Allied air strikes during World War II. The restoration of the frescos revealed the drawings beneath the frescos, which have also been meticulously and wonderully restored. I visited Pisa three times to see the Leaning Tower, which I climbed on my first visit, now no longer permitted. It was a dizzying and unbalanced experience, a feeling that produced new insights and ideas. At my home one evening rocking in my family rocker where my mother rocked and nursed her eight children, I almost lost my balance and tipped over backward, which made me think of The Leaning Tower of Pisa and Galileo's experiments with gravity there. I also remembered that Copernicus lived in a leaning tower. The opening passage of my poem reproduces the feeling of being out-of-balance. The "Premonitions" poems are fitting prophecies.

Oprah Winfrey, OprahDaily.com
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water follows a family in southern India that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning - and in Kerala, water is everywhere.
At the turn of the century a twelve-year-old girl, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this poignant beginning, the young girl and future matriarch - known as Big Ammachi - will witness unthinkable changes at home and at large over the span of her extraordinary life, full of the joys and trials of love and the struggles of hardship.
A shimmering evocation of a lost India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. But when the other Zodiacs try to steal his prize, Lyon must secure the women and run.

When foundling Persephone Payne is attacked by one man then rescued by Lyon, the monster plaguing her nightmares, she is thrust into a supernatural world beyond imagining and forced to rely on Lyon to protect her and her sisters by choice, not by blood.

After Persephone's fate is finally revealed, Lyon must choose between the reclamation of his soul or saving her and the love he doesn't believe he deserves.

Leona's Descent

What Would You Sacrifice To Rewrite A Moment In Time?

Their Rise, Her Fall

After the release of a demon army into the human world, magical power is the only currency that counts, hope is the only thing worth fighting for. Newly-created Zodiac Leona is hungry to learn the dark arts from the Master, a sorcerer so dangerous that he's locked in a cage beneath Hell. The chasm created in the subterranean InBetween for the rise of a demon army, becomes the express route for her fall.

Out of Hope

The direct passage to Hell blocked after Leona crash-lands into Hades, the Zodiac warrior must rely on three forsaken goddesses to survive the shifting realms, evade a god gone mad, and outrun the damage her corrupted soul is doing to their world. As she journeys to the closest portal to Hell, nothing is as it seems, agendas are thick with secrets, and betrayal has become the norm.

What price a soul

Only two souls can release the Master. Hope is close, but Leona must choose: ask the Key and the Lock to sacrifice their souls to open the Master's cage, making her no better than the mad god she has vowed to destroy, or risk the torture of being trapped in the world of the damned, her own soul forever lost.

Libra's Limbo

What Would You Sacrifice To Find True Balance?

A paranormal world trapped between the crumbling safety of the darkness and the deadly world of the light

The Twelve's centuries-long rule of the subterranean world called the InBetween is over, a demon army has been unleashed on earth, and the Zodiacs must unite the paranorm species to survive. But their enemies have other ideas, and the battle for the InBetween is just beginning.

A Zodiac so afraid of losing control he's chosen to live a half-life

Libra left his life as an assassin, but when a specter from his past rears her head and thrusts him into a struggle for an ancient power he refuses to claim, his plan is blown to hell, and his freedom is forfeit. Thrown a lifeline, he must choose between imprisonment and torture, or joining the one woman born to push his scales to the dark side on a long-shot mission they can't afford to fail.

A woman of passion and instinct pushing him to embrace the dark

Taryn's filicidal witch goddess for a mother was bad enough, being charged with protecting her new home using an ability she's unable to control is worse. The Path and the Gate Mormon Short Fiction【電子書籍】[ Todd Robert Petersen ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Path and the Gate Mormon Short Fiction【電子書籍】[ Todd Robert Petersen ]

The Book of Mormon prophet Nephi describes the journey to eternal life as going through a gate of ordinances and traveling a “straight and narrow path.” Twenty-three authors took that gospel roadmap passage as a prompt to write “a Mormon story.” They responded with a surprisingly wide range of realistic and fantastic tales. Many are human reactions to unexpected steps on the path: a lifetime of faith in a patriarchal blessing’s unfulfilled promise, a survivor of violence calling a divided community to repentance, a baptism gone very wrong, and spiritual gifts that extend far beyond the apostle Paul’s list. The characters stretch from wayward bishops and helpful home teachers to cyber-Seventies searching for lost sheep in the metaverse, with settings from the slums of Mumbai to a heaven that turns out to be more difficult than expected. Some characters reject the path’s restrictions and expectations, while others can second the reported words of J. Golden Kimball, “I may not always walk the straight and narrow, but I sure in hell try to cross it as often as I can.”

The Turpentine Tree【電子書籍】[ Lynne Hjelmgaard ]

The Turpentine Tree?is an enduring symbol of memory, fragile but enduring the passage of time and still persisting: in the title poem,?Lynne?Hjelmgaard?describes it 'a coppery faux god / with wildly twisted branches'. It might slip into the void, but here it is for now 'flying into the eye of the storm.'?Hjelmgaard?employs strong, sensuous imagery to capture moments from across her remarkable life. These are portraits of family, friends and relationships ? of?Hjelmgaard's uprooted life, including a life at sea, the subsequent displacement, widowhood and search for connections.?Often the remembrances in poems are sweet-bitter, recalling friends and lovers lost, including the writer's late partner Dannie Abse. These explorations of loss are extremely moving, but the poems also communicate the value of a rich bank of memories which range around from spectating on a girl being punished at camp ('Summer Camp'), a Florida roadtrip with friends ('1969'), or an 'Evening Flight from Copenhagen.' Very often the speakers are in transit, travelling through, and so the poems hold onto intense, lucid or epiphanic moments. There's an honesty, easiness and at times humour about the language. Vulnerability and strength walk side by side to give an extraordinary depth of experience for the reader. There's a visitation from her dead lover; her husband's spirit is safe in her wardrobe in a plastic bag; her father's ghost is on a?WWII?battleship in Norfolk Harbour and later waits for her in a crowd of strangers at Miami airport. These snapshots are sometimes based on real photographs, or at other times are imaginary photographs;?Hjelmgaard?questions 'Did?we?really exist? Yes ? / the photograph answers' ('The Photograph Answers'). Threaded throughout all these memories is the gorgeous vividness of nature ? the sea, animals, and creatures ? which take speakers out of human concerns to a more connected relation with the world.?The Turpentine Tree?is about intangible presences which open up memory and move beyond it, towards a universal interconnectedness. How far back does grief go? What is lost, what can be found??Is memory transferred between us without words, years later, is the unsayable felt? (from 'On the Atlantic Coast of Spain') 'Lynne?Hjelmgaard?is truthful yet unrepentant. An American poet, determined to be alive.' - Robert Minhinnick, author of Diary of the Last Man 'These poems keep a distinctive balance between distance and closeness ? a wide span across decades, between continents, hand in hand with crisp small moments that encapsulate a life. Closeness, too, in the intimacies at the heart of this collection, held with a lucid sensitivity that's never sentimental, staying true to individual relationships while melting into universal themes of love, loss, letting go and celebration.' -???Philip Gross, author of The Thirteenth Angel 'Who is this person from so many places? Lynne Hjelmgaard grew up in Stuyvesant Town NYC, lived in Denmark, in Paris, in England, in the Caribbean -- did she really sail on a boat? What is she telling us? Everything she carries within, at any time. A unique, unusual life reflected on in poems of intimate address to the reader/companion. Delicate, beautiful, detailed from an amazing memory. Childhood, womanhood, children, aging, loves, mixed as everything is in the one body/mind. Tender and magical.' - Alice Notley, author of For the Ride

The renowned travel writer and novelist, Leon Riser, is facing not only middle age but terminal illness. He has sequestered himself in his cabin in the Rockies, his sole companion, his private duty nurse Fumiko Sato. An unexpected visit from his former step-daughter Iris forces him to revisit his troubled on and off again twenty-five-year love affair with Iris's mother, the famous singer-songwriter Lou Ann Catskill whom he has not spoken with in over five years. It seems that Lou Ann, who struggles with Bipolar Disorder, has walked out on her current husband and has gone missing. Iris hopes to enlist Leon's help in finding her. Out of obligation to Iris, Leon puts aside his physical limitations and conflicted emotions, and agrees to accompany Iris as far as Santa Fe, Lou Ann's most recent domicile. Fumiko feels she has little choice but to accompany them. Their initial efforts come to naught and do little more than resurrect painful memories for Leon, forcing him to reexamine some of the seminal chapters in his tangled relationship with Lou Ann. All the while, Lou Ann is forced to face her own culpability in the failure of their relationship. Their parallel cross-country odysseys eventually lead them to Austin, culminating in revelations, reckonings, and regrets. THE SIREN'S REFRAIN explores themes of aging, mortality, lost love, and regret. At its heart, it is a story of a love affair that has endured not only the passage of time but also the very bonds that both enabled and threatened it.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Following the Echoes The Quest to Uncover a True Wartime Story of Love, Loss, and Legacy【電子書籍】[ Claudia Fox Reppen ]

After the death of their British-born Grandma Gladys in 2021, siblings Claudia and Lance took a sudden interest in the Canadian fianc? Gladys lost during World War II, Wendell “Del” Pierce Drew, a member of the elite RAF Pathfinder Force with Bomber Command who hailed from the tiny farming settlement of Radisson, Saskatchewan.

With a couple of old photos and a few anecdotes to go on, the siblings set out to uncover Del’s story, discovering a rich history of people searching for adventure or a better life. From the Canadian prairie to London’s Notting Hill, to the shores of the North Sea and beyond, Following the Echoes uncovers stories obscured by the passage of time and reflects on the ripple effect that the pulling of literal and metaphorical triggers can have on our lives.

Exploring the theme of grief, the book recounts an incredible event in Gladys’s life, when her grief over Del suddenly and dramatically resurfaced one day in 1993ーforty-nine years after his deathーas well as the story of Del’s parents, Albert and Achsah Drew, revealing how they experienced unfathomable loss long before losing their son in the war.

This is the first book to examine in depth the fate of Lancaster JB707, which Del and his crewmates were aboard when they disappeared in July 1944, piecing together the events of the last sortie. The reader is taken along the crew’s final moments, even learning who likely pulled the fateful trigger that led to their demise.

Finally, the siblings describe how “following the echoes” of incredible coincidences and connections led them to a place of deep awe and admiration, as well as profound gratitude, especially for those in Bomber Command. This is a poignant story of love and loss but also one of a legacy extending into the present, uniting families, friends, and fellow citizens through exploring the richness and tragedy in the lives of those who built Canada into a great nation, and how the Greatest Generation sacrificed to preserve itーlest we forget.
