【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Sho-Time The Inside Story of Shohei Ohtani and the Greatest Baseball Season Ever Played【電子書籍】[ Jeff Fletcher ]

The story behind Major League Baseball's two-way playing phenomenon and his rise from early days in Japan to his historic 2021 MVP season.
Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels is playing baseball like no other major leaguer since Babe Ruth. His dominance as a two-way playerーan electric pitcher and an elite sluggerーmade him the 2021 American League Most Valuable Player, the only player ever selected as an All Star as both a pitcher and hitter, and a member of Time 100's most influential people of 2021.
In Ohtani's first two-way game of the 2021 season, he threw a pitch at 100 mph and hit a homer that left his bat at 115 mph, a confluence of feats unmatched by anyone else in the sport. He racked up eye-popping achievements all year. But awards and numbers tell only part of his amazing story.
In Sho-Time, award-winning sportswriter Jeff Fletcher, who has covered Ohtani more than any other American journalist, charts Ohtani's path through Japanese baseball to a championship with the Nippon-Ham Fighters, the recruiting war to bring him to the majors, his 2018 AL Rookie of the Year campaign, subsequent injury-riddled seasons, and then his historic 2021 season. Along the way, Fletcher weaves in the history of two-way playersーincluding Babe Ruth and unsung Negro Leagues players like "Bullet" Joe Rogan, Mart?n Dihigo, and Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffeーand the Japanese athletes who preceded Ohtani in the majors. With insight from Japanese and American baseball front office personnel, managers, scouts, athletic trainers, ballplayers, and more, Sho-Time breaks down the physics of Ohtani's game, his technologically advanced training, his international fame, and the role he and teammate Mike Trout are playing to lead baseball into the next generation.
Praise for Sho-Time
"Jeff Fletcher masterfully chronicles not only what Ohtani accomplished in '21, but also provides the full context to his achievements. . . . Fletcher's book is the definitive look at Ohtani's two-way majesty." ーKen Rosenthal, Senior Writer at The Athletic
"Historians will be talking about Shohei Ohtani's 2021 season for decades, and thankfully the baseball gods arranged for Jeff Fletcher to be there to cover baseball's best two-way player ever in the midst of a pandemic, to bear witness and mine details and write with grace about the sport's most incredible individual performance." ーBuster Olney, ESPN
"The essential portrait of baseball's most captivating player. . . . Fletcher goes beyond the carefully scripted press conferences, revealing in vivid detail the challenges and triumphs of a baseball journey like no other." ーTyler Kepner, The New York Times

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Play Hungry The Making of a Baseball Player【電子書籍】[ Pete Rose ]

**A New York Times Bestseller

The inside story of how Pete Rose became one of the greatest and most controversial players in the history of baseball**

Pete Rose was a legend on the field. As baseball’s Hit King, he shattered records that were thought to be unbreakable. And during the 1970s, he was the leader of the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds team that dominated the game. But he’s also the greatest player who may never enter the Hall of Fame because of his lifetime ban from the sport. Perhaps no other ballplayer’s story is so representative of the triumphs and tragedies of our national pastime.

In Play Hungry, Rose tells us the story of how, through hard work and sheer will, he became one of the unlikeliest stars of the game. Guided by the dad he idolized, a local sports hero, Pete learned to play hard and always focus on winning. But even with his dad’s guidance, Pete was cut from his team as a teenagerーhe wasn’t a natural. Rose was determined, though, and never would be satisfied with anything less than success. His relentless hustle and headfirst style would help him overcome his limitations, leading him to one of the most exciting and brash careers in the history of the sport.

Play Hungry is Pete Rose’s love letter to the game, and an unvarnished story of life on the diamond. One of the icons of a golden age in baseball, he describes just what it was like to hit (or try to hit) a Bob Gibson fastball or a Gaylord Perry spitball, what happened in that infamous collision at home plate during the 1970 All-Star Game, and what it felt like to topple Ty Cobb’s hit record. And he speaks to how he let down his fans, his teammates, and the memory of his dad when he gambled on baseball, breaking the rules of a sport that he loved more than anything else. Told with candor and wry humorーincluding tales he’s never told beforeーRose’s memoir is his final word on the glories and controversies of his life, and, ultimately, a master class in how to succeed when the odds are stacked against you.

"If Clubbie isn't the best piece of baseball literature since Ball Four, it's the leader in the clubhouse."ーLos Angeles Daily News

"[A] well-written, realistic, and necessary addition to current baseball literature."ーLibrary Journal

Greg Larson was a starry-eyed fan when he hurtled headfirst into professional baseball. As the new clubhouse attendant for the Aberdeen IronBirds, a Minor League affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, Larson assumed he’d entered a familiar world. He thought wrong.

He quickly discovered the bizarre rituals of life in the Minors: fights between players, teammates quitting in the middle of the games, doomed relationships, and a negligent parent organization. All the while, Larson, fresh out of college, harbored a secret wish. Despite the team’s struggles and his own lack of baseball talent, he yearned to join the exclusive fraternity of professional ballplayers.

Instead, Larson fell deeper into his madcap venture as the scheming clubbie. He moved into the clubhouse equipment closet, his headquarters to swing deals involving memorabilia, booze, and loads of cash. By his second season, Larson had transformed into a deceptive, dip-spitting veteran, now fully part of a system that exploited players he considered friends.

Like most Minor Leaguers, the gravitational pull of baseball was still too strong for Larsonーeven if chasing his private dream might cost him his girlfriend, his future, and, ultimately, his love of the game. That is, until an unlikely shot at a championship gives Larson and the IronBirds one final swing at redemption.

Clubbie is a hilarious behind-the-scenes tale of two seasons in the mysterious world of Minor League Baseball. With cinematic detail and a colorful cast of characters, Larson spins an unforgettable true story for baseball fans and nonfans alike.

An unflinching look at the harsh experience of professional sports, Clubbie will be a touchstone in baseball literature for years to come.

The reporter who broke the Houston Astros’ cheating scandal reveals how a baseball team could so dramatically descend into corruption, with the never-before-told inside account of a broken management culture, the once-revered leaders who enabled it, and the sign-stealing scandal itself.

Baseball, that old romantic game, has been defaced and consumed by corporate America. As Moneyball-thinking and Ivy League graduates took hold of the sport’s analytics in baseball, the Astros set out to build a cost-efficient winning machine on the principles of the outside business world, squeezing every dollar out of every transaction, player and employee.

In less than a decade, ex-Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow helped revolutionize the game. He created an environment that led to one of the worst cheating scandals in modern baseball history, a Shakespearean tragedy of innovation and failed change management. Through years of extensive interviews, former Houston Chronicle beat writer Evan Drellich, now a national writer for The Athletic, delivers the definitive account of baseball’s most controversial franchise and how a modern baseball team truly worksーwithout the usual myth-spinning.

Drellich reveals the rise and fall of the Astros to be a collision of subcultures. The team’s top boss was a former McKinsey consultant who lived on the bleeding edge with no guardrails. He hired outsider after outsider to change the organization as quickly and cheaply as possible. The wins piled up, and so did the cash for the billionaire owner with a checkered business past. But not even a World Series title could cover up the rot in this cautionary tale of sports business.

All of it came at a cost to fans, employees, and the sport on a whole. But as Winning Fixes Everything makes clear, “The Astros Way” isn’t going anywhere. Drellich uses the saga of the Astros’ scandal to detail the evolution of baseball itself.

This gripping work of investigative journalism reveals:

Corporate Culture in Sports: How a data-driven, “Moneyball-on-steroids” approach championed by a former McKinsey consultant created an environment where corruption could thrive.

The Sign-Stealing System: The definitive, never-before-told details of the scheme, from the reporter who broke the story for the nation.

Failed Change Management: A Shakespearean tragedy of innovation without guardrails, showing how the relentless pursuit of a cost-efficient winning machine came at a cost to the entire sport of Major League Baseball.

A Collision of Subcultures: The inside story of Jeff Luhnow, Jim Crane, and the outsiders they hired to revolutionize the gameーand how not even a World Series title could cover up the rot.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Duke of Havana Baseball, Cuba, and the Search for the American Dream【電子書籍】[ Steve Fainaru ]

In 1998, a mysterious right-handed pitcher emerged from the ashes of the Cold War and helped lead the New York Yankees to a World Championship. His origins and even his age were uncertain. His name was Orlando El Duque Hernandez. He was a fallen hero of Fidel Castro's socialist revolution.

The chronicle of El Duque's triumph is at once a window into the slow death of Cuban socialism and one of the most remarkable sports stories of all time. Once hailed as a paragon of Castro's revolution, the finest pitcher in modern Cuban history was banned from baseball for life for allegedly plotting to defect. Instead of accepting his punishment, he fearlessly fought back, defying the Communist party authorities, vowing to pitch again, and ultimately fleeing his country in the bowels of a thirty-foot fishing boat.

Here, for the first time and in astonishing detail, the secrets behind El Duque's persecution and escape are revealed. Moving from the crumbling streets of post Cold War Havana to the polarized world of exile Miami, from the deadly Florida Straits to the hallowed grounds of Yankee Stadium, it is a story of cloak-and-dagger adventure, audacious secret plots, the pull of big money, and the historic collision of ideologies.

Present throughout are the larger-than-life characters who converged at this bizarre intersection of baseball and politics: El Duque himself, Fidel Castro, the Miami sports agent Joe Cubas, the late John Cardinal O'Connor along with scouts, smugglers, and the Cuban ballplayers who gave up their lives as tools of socialism to test the free market and chase their major-league dreams.

Reported in the United States and Cuba by two award-winning journalists who became part of the story they were covering, The Duke of Havana is a riveting saga of sports, politics, liberation, and greed.

Ty Cobb called baseball a “red-blooded game for red-blooded men,” warning that “molly coddles had better stay out.” By this, Cobb meant that baseball was the ultimate expression of the masculine ideal ? a game of aggression, rivalry, physical and mental dexterity, self-reliance, and primal honor. For over twenty years, Cobb expressed his fierce brand of manhood in ballparks throughout the American Northeast, gaining for himself a level of celebrity that was unsurpassed in the early twentieth century. Fans idolized Cobb not only because he was the best player in the game, but because his boisterous and combative style of play satisfied their desire for exhibitions of visceral manhood. They found in Cobb an antidote for what they feared were the corrupting influences of over-civilization.

With balance, precision, and empathy, Steven Elliott Tripp brings the era to life in a narrative Publisher’s Weekly has called “stunning.” In contrast to recent biographies of Cobb that have tried to minimize his more brutish behavior and minimize his racial antipathies, Tripp contextualizes Cobb, placing him squarely within the cultural milieu of both the rural South of his birth and the Northern sporting culture of his professional career. Moreover, Tripp’s reconstruction of early twentieth-century sporting culture isolates an important source of modern America’s culture of hyper-masculinity.

Ty Cobb, Baseball, and American Manhood is both an important work of social and cultural history and an absorbing tale of ambition and the quest for dominance. Tripp has written the rare narrative that is as appealing to scholars as it is to general readers and sports enthusiasts.

He was not much of a player and not much more of a manager, but by the time Branch Rickey (1881?1965) finished with baseball, he had revolutionized the sportーnot just once but three times. In this definitive biography of Rickeyーthe man sportswriters dubbed “The Brain,” “The Mahatma,” and, on occasion, “El Cheapo”ーLee Lowenfish tells the full and colorful story of a life that forever changed the face of America’s game.

As the mastermind behind the Saint Louis Cardinals from 1917 to 1942, Rickey created the farm system, which allowed small-market clubs to compete with the rich and powerful. Under his direction in the 1940s, the Brooklyn Dodgers became truly the first “America’s team.” By signing Jackie Robinson and other black players, he single-handedly thrust baseball into the forefront of the civil rights movement. Lowenfish evokes the peculiarly American complex of God, family, and baseball that informed Rickey’s actions and his accomplishments. His book offers an intriguing, richly detailed portrait of a man whose life is itself a crucial chapter in the history of American business, sport, and society.

~~In the bottom of the Ninth Inning of life, when the bases are loaded, you are losing a close game, there are two outs and the count is three and two against you, where can you, the batter in this game of life, look to, for a sign as to whether you should swing away at the next pitch or hold off in the hopes of getting a walk. The Tarot of Baseball is an attempt to give you just that sign.

Many arcane forms and techniques have been used over the years to explain why an all-star shortstop suddenly drops seventy points in batting average after signing a multi-year multi-million dollar contract. As well, many other questions of baseball lore remain unresolved despite much meditation and some occasional thaumaturgy. Are stolen bases really worth the effort? Is a poor hitting defensive shortstop better than a good hitting, poor throwing right fielder? Do beards really affect the performance of a relief pitcher's curve ball?

The Tarot of Baseball does not purport to offer the definitive answer to these perplexing questions but it does offer to provide the sincere seeker with more than just a few tired sports clichés pointing the way along the road of life. Before it can do so, the student of baseball tarot must learn about the meanings behind the cards and the methods of determining how those meanings interact when they are read in the nine inning game of life. In this new color edition you can do just that AND with the right software and paper print your very own cards to help you navigate this game of life.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Swing and a Hit Nine Innings of What Baseball Taught Me【電子書籍】[ Paul O'Neill ]

This fun and fiery New York Times bestselling memoir tells the life story of All Star Yankee and five-time World Champion, Paul O’Neill, like you’ve never seen him before.

In Swing and Hit, O’Neill elaborates on his most important hitting principles, lessons, and memoriesーexploring those elements across ten chapters (to align with the nine innings of a baseball game and one extra inning). Here, O’Neill, with his intense temperament, describes what he did as a hitter, how he adjusted to pitchers, how he boosted his confidence, how he battled with umpires (and water coolers), and what advice he would give to current hitters.

O’Neill has always been a tough out at the plate. Recalling how he started to swing at bat as a two-year-old and kept swinging it professionally until he was thirty-eight, O’Neill provides constant insights into the beauty and frustration of playing baseball. The legendary Ted Williams said using a round bat to hit a round ball is the most difficult thing to do in sports. Naturally, O’Neill, who once received a surprise call from Williams that was filled with hitting advice, agrees.

Swing and Hit features O’Neill’s most thoughtful revelations and offers clubhouse stories from some of the biggest names in Major League Baseballーhitters, managers, and teammates like Joe Torre, Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly, Pete Rose, and Bernie Williams.

Remember, O’Neill, ever the perfectionist, was the type of hitter who believed that pitchers didn’t ever get him out. For that incredible reason and so many others, Swing and Hit is essential reading for any baseball fan.

Raised in the “shot and beer” town of Hazleton, PA, and forged by 15 years in the minors, Maddon over 19 seasons in Tampa Bay, Chicago, and Anaheim has become one of the most successful, most colorful, and most quoted managers in Major League Baseball. He is a workplace culture expert, having engineered two of the most stunning turnarounds in the past quarter century: taking the Rays from the worst record in baseball one year to the World Series the next and leading the Cubs to their first World Series title in 108 years.

Like his teams, Maddon defies convention. He is part strategist, part philosopher, part sports psychologist, and part motivational coach. In THE BOOK OF JOE, Maddon gives readers unique insights into the game, including the tension between art and data, the changing role of managers as front offices gain power, why the honeymoon with the Cubs did not last, and what it’s like to manage the modern player, including stars such as Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Yu Darvish, and Kris Bryant.

But you expect even more from a manager who meditates daily, admires Twain, and has only one rule when it comes to a team dress code: “If you think you look hot, wear it!” And Maddon delivers. Built on-old school values and new-school methods, his wisdom applies beyond the dugout. His mantras about leadership, mentorship, team building, and communication are meditations on life, not just baseball. Among those mantras are:

“Do simple better.”
“Try not to suck.”
“Don’t ever permit the pressure to exceed the
pleasure.”
“See it with first-time eyes.”
“Tell me what you think, not what you’ve heard.”

THE BOOK OF JOE is Maddon at his uniquely holistic best. It is a memoir of a fascinating baseball journey, an insider’s look at a changing game, and a guidebook on leadership and life.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Baseball's Outcast The Story of Ron LeFlore【電子書籍】[ Adam Henig ]

From the prison cage to the batting cage, Ron LeFlore's journey to the major leagues was anything but ordinary.

When twenty-three-year-old Ron LeFlore played his first organized baseball game, it was in a yard at the State Prison of Southern Michigan where he was serving five to fifteen years for armed robbery. An extraordinary athlete, the Detroit native had luck on his side: his coach, a convicted felon, had connections to the Detroit Tigers. Within three-and-a-half years, Ron went from a prison inmate to a Tiger centerfielder.

In Baseball's Outcast: The Story of Ron LeFlore, Adam Henig tells for the first time in full the unbelievable life and career of Ron LeFlore. Blessed with blinding speed and a powerful swing, Ron shed his jailbird past to become one of the game's premiere hitters and its most dangerous base stealer during the latter half of the 1970s. His rags-to-riches life story became a bestselling book and a made-for-television movie starring actor LeVar Burton, fresh from his performance in Roots. But the good times did not last. Less than a decade after making his Major League debut, Ron was finished with baseball.

Baseball's Outcast is not just another book about the rise and fall of a troubled athlete. Henig goes deeper, tracing the star player's family roots, exploring the segregated world that Ron was raised in, examining the criminal justice system he was subjected to, and revealing how childhood trauma shaped his success and downfall. Filled with insight from Ron himself, as well as from former teammates, coaches, front-office personnel, inmates, childhood friends, and relatives, Baseball's Outcast provides unprecedented access into Ron's life story and the obstacles he faced every step of the way.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Giant among Giants The Baseball Life of Willie McCovey【電子書籍】[ Chris Haft ]

Willie McCovey, known as “Stretch,” played Major League Baseball from 1959 to 1980, most notably as a member of the San Francisco Giants for nineteen seasons. A fearsome left-handed power hitter, McCovey ranked second only to Babe Ruth in career home runs among left-handed batters and tied for eighth overall with Ted Williams at the time of his retirement. He was a six-time All-Star, three-time National League home run champion, and 1969 league MVP, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 in his first year of eligibility. Known as a dead-pull line drive hitter, McCovey was called “the scariest hitter in baseball” by pitcher Bob Gibson.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, McCovey encountered daunting hurdles, such as Jim Crow laws that prevented him from playing organized ball as a youth and playing for Major League managers such as Tom Sheehan and Alvin Dark, who took a dim view of his abilities. But neither that nor other difficulties on the fieldーthe platooning, the slights, the unrelenting injuriesーseemed to affect McCovey, as he remained grateful to be playing baseball.

McCovey was the most treasured Bay Area icon of all, a humble, approachable superstar who earned the admiration of seemingly everyone he encountered. McCovey’s life wasn’t measured in his home run and RBI totals, though those were impressive. His greatest significance lay in the warmth and respect he extended and which others reciprocated. These elements elevated McCovey to a pantheon where relatively few athletes reside. He remains synonymous with not just the team he ennobled but also the city he represented.

In A Giant among Giants, the first biography of McCovey, who passed away in 2018 at the age of eighty, Chris Haft tells the story of one of baseball’s best hitters and most-beloved players.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Baseball Joe on the School Nine Pitching for the Blue Banner【電子書籍】[ Lester Chadwick ]

No Facebook, Google, Instagram, or cellphones

.Just pluck, wit, forging relationships, setting goals, overcoming whatever gets in your way.

That’s the world of Joe Matson, also known as Baseball Joe.

Joe Matson is just an ordinary kid in a typical Midwestern town. He loves to play baseball and wants to make it onto the local nine, but his every step finds obstacles in the way. Joe wants to pitch, but the team has a star pitcher already who is reluctant ? to say the least ? to give up his position to this fresh-faced newcomer. But Joe perseveres, occasionally getting a lucky break, but more often having to rely on his own resources to reach his goal.

As he reaches one goal, he then tackles the next one ? making it to Yale and playing for the college team, then becoming a professional, later getting into the big leagues, and finally making it to the top of the baseball world. It is what they used to call “pluck.”Joe has plenty of that as he gradually becomes Baseball Joe. In this volume, Baseball Joe on the School Nine, our hero gets into prep school and tries out for the baseball team. Making the team isn’t easy, however. Joe must overcome many obstacles, but Joe knows what he wants and seizes the opportunities when they present themselves.

You can follow Baseball Joe’s progress as he ascends the heights of his baseball glory with exciting and surprising adventures along the way. First Inning Press is proud to introduce these new editions of Baseball Joe’s exploits in a ten-volume set. Once you read one of them, you will want to read them all.

For the boy in your life ? maybe that boy is you ? these are the perfect companions ? simple tales that are accessible and easy-to-read. Give the gift of reading to the person you care about today.

--

The genius behind the Baseball Joe books was Edward Stratemeyer (1862-1930), a New Jersey born writer who was creative and prolific. As a teenager, Stratemeyer has his own printing press and understood the printing and distribution process intimately. He began writing stories then but didn’t sell his first story to a magazine until he was 26. In 1899, Stratemeyer published the first of his Rover Boys series, which became widely popular. Stratemeyer did not invent the series formula, but he recognized its potential, and in 1905, he formed the Stratemeyer Literary Syndicate through which he hired journalists to write stories based on his ideas and outlines. He would pay his writers a flat fee and keep the copyright for himself. Thus was born series such as The Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and Nancy Drew. Baseball Joe never reached the cultural status as these other series, possibly because of their specialized setting ? the world of baseball ? but they are nevertheless a pleasant and entertaining set that will continue to delight young readers.

Stratemeyer lived a quiet life with this family in New Jersey and never sought publicity for himself. He also made a ton of money. After his death, Stratemeyer’s work continued, and his legacy entertained millions of young readers even into the twenty-first century.

We hope that legacy will continue well into this century.First Inning Press has done very little editing to the text, believing they should be preserved as they were a century ago. We have added illustrations, however, that we hope will enhance the reading experience of all, young and old, who open these pages.

Gloria Sanchez was never a baseball fan. That is until she saw the new pitcher for the Texas Rangers. David Gutierez, on television at least, was handsome and exceptionally charming. As soon as she saw him, Gloria developed a true interest in the sport. When he comes to the taco truck where she works before his first big game, Gloria can hardly believe her luck.

Luck, it turns out, is exactly what David is hoping Gloria can give him. He has a tradition that's won him games ever since he was in high school. He always buys two dozen breakfast tacos the morning of a big game. He doesn't eat all of them, but he has to buy them. If he doesn't, the team may very well lose. His ritual seems well founded when he makes trips to Gloria's taco truck a habit. The Rangers have won every home game since they met. Gloria's starting to think that she is the reason David keeps coming back, not the tacos.

When David asks her to come on a road trip with him and the team (with taco making material in tow), her suspicion seems confirmed. She's convinced that this is more than an attempt to win on the road. This is a real date. But what will happen when Gloria discovers that David is more interested in winning than he is in her?

A Standalone Short Story with No Cliffhanger!

He's still reeling from the sudden death of his charismatic but demanding and disappointed father, and his caustic wit and quirky Boston Irish personality have cost him his job. They've also sparked dangerous run-ins with a huge Mafia hit man and a biker strongman, and fostered a decided lack of way with women.

Fortunately, Rocky's old friends from the neighborhood-a power-lifting bouncer, an alcoholic Vietnam vet and aspiring author, a struggling gym owner, a philandering salesman, a disappointed ex-professional baseball player, and one pain-in-the-butt, got-it-together business superstar-are as supportive as always as Rocky gains rejuvenation in the gym, on the ball field, and at the bar. But he finds his greatest comfort at a near-palatial summer house on Cape Cod, where there's a wild, summer-long party going on.

To find his own happiness, Rocky knows that he needs maturity, empathy, and perspective.
