Evening Songs and Songs of the Slav: An Anthology of Modern Bohemian Poetry【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Evening Songs and Songs of the Slav: An Anthology of Modern Bohemian Poetry【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

V?t?zslav H?lek, whose little volume of verses is herewith presented to the reader in English translation, belonged to the romantic and lyric school of Czech poesy during the second half of the last century. He was born in 1835 and died in 1874. From his first appearance in literature in 1858 he held his nation at attention and enjoyed its admiration and love for twenty years. During that time he produced a line of works touching upon nearly all classes of writing; however, the lyric string of his lyre proved to be the most charming one, and this little volume of Evening Songs proved to be his culminating point. As an expression of fragrant effusions of feeling it always appealed to the tenderness of youthful hearts and was eagerly sought and read, so that the book in the original appeared in many editions. Should the little volume bring real pleasure to the reader and induce others to open wider the doors to the rich and charming Czech literature for the readers in English, the effort of the translator would be well rewarded. Although the Czecho-Slovaks have a great literature, particularly rich in poetry, but very little has been introduced to the American public. This has perhaps been due mainly to the fact that the Czechs did not possess their independence and consequently were considered an insignificant nation submerged within the shadows of the former Austro-Hungarian empire. Since the World War has resulted in liberating oppressed nationalities, and Czecho-Slovakia has again regained her ancient independence, undoubtedly a greater opportunity will be offered to learn more about the language and literature of that liberty loving people. As is usually the case with a nation held in subjugation, so with the Czecho-Slovaks, their poets kept alive the national spirit until their liberation. The purpose of this little volume is not only to present a few specimens of Czecho-Slovak poetry, but also to show how Czecho-Slovak poets kept the “fires of Liberty” burning, while awaiting “dawn’s redemptory glow.” Of the poets herein represented, Jan Koll?r, the Slovak poet, is known as the poet of Pan-Slavism. V?t?zslav H?lek was the forerunner of the modern school of poets, instilling idealism and enthusiasm into the then newly resurrected national life. Svatopluk ?ech has the distinction of being the most popular of all the Czech poets. Petr Bezru?, “first bard of Bezkyd, and the last,” is the Mountain Poet of (Lower) Silesia. Blowing into a “dying flame,” he has kept alive the Czech national spirit of that region against the combined efforts of the Germans and the Poles. J. S. Machar is the leading poet of Czecho-Slovakia in the present day.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Talkin' Greenwich Village The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America's Bohemian Music Capital【電子書籍】[ David Browne ]

**"Talkin’ Greenwich Village is impeccably researched, elegantly written and consistently fascinating."--New York Times

"Browne relates the extensive cast of characters and historical events with journalistic clarity and cinematic scope--so much so that it'll send you back to [A Complete Unknown] to identify who's who in the bit parts."--The Oakland Press

***A Rolling Stone Best Music Book of 2024***

The definitive history of the rise and heyday of the revolutionary Greenwich Village music scene, based on new research and first-hand interviews with many of its legendary performers**

Although Greenwich Village encompasses less than a square mile in downtown New York, rarely has such a concise area nurtured so many innovative artists and genres. Over the course of decades, Billie Holiday, the Weavers, Sonny Rollins, Dave Van Ronk, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Phil Ochs, and Suzanne Vega are just a few who migrated to the Village, recognizing it as a sanctuary for visionaries, non-conformists, and those looking to reinvent themselves. Working in the Village’s smokey coffeehouses and clubs, they chronicled the tumultuous Sixties, rewrote jazz history, and took folk and rock & roll into places they hadn’t been before.

Based on over 150 new interviews (Judy Collins, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Eric Andersen, Suzzy and Terre Roche, Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, Arlo Guthrie, John Sebastian, Shawn Colvin, the members of the Blues Project, and more), previously unseen documents, and author David Browne’s longtime immersion in the scene, Talkin’ Greenwich Village lends the saga the epic, panoramic scope it’s long deserved. It takes readers from the Fifties jamborees in Washington Square Park and into landmark venues like Gerde’s Folk City, the Gaslight Caf?, and the Village Vanguard, onto Dylan’s momentous arrival and returns, the no-holds-barred Seventies years (West Village discos, National Lampoon’s Lemmings), and the folk revival of the Eighties (Vega’s enduring “Tom’s Diner”).

In eye-opening fashion, Browne also details the often-overlooked people of color in the Sixties folk clubs, reveals how the FBI and city government consistently kept their eyes on the community, unearths the machinations behind the infamous “beatnik riot” in Washington Square Park, and tells the interconnected tales of Van Ronk, the seminal band the Blues Project, and the beloved sister trio, the Roches.

In also recounting the racial tensions, crackdowns, and changes in New York and music that infiltrated the neighborhood, Talkin’ Greenwich Village is more than just vivid cultural history. It also speaks to the rise and waning of bohemian culture itself, set to some of the most enduring lyrics, melodies, and jazz improvisations in American music.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Bohemian Girl (1988), Frances Vernon's fourth novel, transports us to 1890s London to meet the young Diana Blentham, whom Vernon first introduced to readers - as a celebrated grande horizontale - in the opening pages of her 1982 debut Privileged Children.

Diana fears that the lot of an intelligent woman is to simply be married and never again open a book. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Claudine in Paris (Summarized Edition) Enriched edition. Flirtations, freedom, and satire in early 20th-century Parisian societyーa Bohemian coming-of-age.【電子書籍】[ Colette ]

Claudine in Paris continues the audacious diary of Colette's teenage heroine as she exchanges provincial classrooms for the glitter and grit of Belle ?poque Paris. The novel charts her initiation into salons, theaters, and school corridors, where flirtation, rivalry, and schemes mingle with curiosities about desire and independence. Written in a supple first-person that moves from epigram to vignette, the book blends comedy of manners with a naturalist attention to bodies and streets. It situates Claudine's coming-of-age within fin-de-si?cle debates about education, femininity, and urban modernity. Coletteーborn Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette in Burgundyーdrew upon the contrasts between rural attentiveness to nature and the pressures of Parisian spectacle. Early in her career, the Claudine books appeared under the signature of her husband, Willy, who encouraged and exploited her talent; she later asserted her authorship. Her immersion in Parisian performance culture and keen observation of animals, plants, and human poses inform the novel's tactile style and its cool, unsentimental scrutiny of desire, reputation, and power. Readers seeking a brisk, incisive bildungsromanーand scholars interested in queer subtext, gender performance, and Belle ?poque cultureーwill find Claudine in Paris both pleasurable and illuminating. It stands on its own yet deepens powerfully when read alongside the series. Quickie Classics summarizes timeless works with precision, preserving the author's voice and keeping the prose clear, fast, and readableーdistilled, never diluted. The Vagabond (Summarized Edition) Enriched edition. A Prose-Poetic Journey of Female Independence, Desire, and Identity in Early 20th?Century Bohemian Paris and the French Expatriate World【電子書籍】[ Colette ]

In The Vagabond (1910), Colette follows Ren?e N?r?, a divorced music-hall performer, through Belle ?poque Paris, recording the economics and erotic politics of a woman who works with her body yet refuses ownership. In supple first person, part diary and theater sketch, the novel marries sensuous detail to cool self-scrutiny as Ren?e weighs the comfort promised by a wealthy admirer against the hard-won clarity of solitude and work. Colette's tactile prose and modern psychological acuity probe performance, aging, and the gaze across trains, dressing rooms, and provincial stages. Colette's own trajectory animates this poise between art and autonomy. After ending her marriage to Willy, under whose name the Claudine books first appeared, she sustained herself on the music-hall stage. That apprenticeship supplies the novel's authority, and she later returned to Ren?e in The Shackle to extend the inquiry. Readers of feminist modernism, theater history, and intimate psychological fiction will find The Vagabond indispensable. It offers a lucid, unsentimental account of desire, work, and self-making, avoiding melodrama without surrendering lyricism. Come for Colette's style; stay for Ren?e's fierce, moving argument for freedom. Quickie Classics summarizes timeless works with precision, preserving the author's voice and keeping the prose clear, fast, and readableーdistilled, never diluted. How in the early twenty-first century has Hurst’s career been reclaimed and recognized, and by whom? Why in 2012 was Hurst’s name given to one of the new Titanic Studios in Belfast? What were his qualities as a filmmaker? To whose national cinema history, if any, does Hurst belong?

Richly illustrated with film stills and other visual material from public archives, The Last Bohemian addresses these questions and in doing so makes a significant contribution to British and Irish cinema studies.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

The Bohemian Review【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Bohemian Review【電子書籍】[ Various Authors ]

Patriot desires but one reward: that he should live to see his labors bear fruit. On January 12, 1917, thousands of Czechs in the United States found time in the midst of their joyous celebration of the dawn of Bohemia’s independence to remember the grand old man of Bohemia, Thomas Garigue Masaryk. He it was who put the ancient kingdom of Bohemia once more upon the map of Europe. On the day when the Allies’ answer to President Wilson was published, he surely was happy, for he had proof that his titanic labors, his tremendous personal and family sacrifices were not made in vain. Bohemia's right to independence was clearly recognized by the Allies and the liberation of the country from foreign domination was made one of the conditions of peace. For centuries no one in Bohemia did more than dream of independence. This Slav country had been subject to the Hapsburgs for so many generations and so thoroughly was it repressed that even the boldest spirits among its leaders regretfully put aside all thoughts of absolute freedom as visionary and aimed merely at securing for the lands of the Bohemian crown the widest possible autonomy within the confines of the Austrian Empire. On several occasions during the long reign of Francis Joseph the Czechs came near to the realization of these moderate ambitions, but always the emperor drew back unable to give up his ambition to be the German ruler of German or Germanized subjects. Of late years the struggle of the Czechs for a certain amount of liberty at home and for the right to participate in the government of the Empire was growing more and more hopeless. The general European situation was undergoing a change greatly to the disadvantage of Bohemia. The Hapsburg realm was losing its standing as a great power, due mainly to the constant internal dissensions and language disputes, while the truly national states of Europe were growing in population, wealth and military power. Above all Germany, excelling in industrial and military preparedness, aggressive and domineering, was looking for new worlds to conquer. America was out of the question, for the United States was guarding jealously against the invasion of the two western continents through its Monroe doctrine. Germany’s African colonies were unsuitable for colonization by white men and constituted merely a financial burden. Only Asia offered an undeveloped fieldーthe ramshackle Turkish Empireーand to that land of promise the road from Germany led through the dual empire and the Balkan states. Prague was the first stage on the Berlin-Bagdad highway, and the Czech people were the first obstacle to German expansion. It was a part of Germany’s plan to reduce Austria to complete subserviency by the exaltation of its German minority and a more thorough repression of the Slav and Latin races, with the assistance of the Magyars. There were not lacking statemen in Bohemia who saw whither things were tending. Two of them stand out above the other Czech patriots: Dr. Charles Kramar and Professor Thomas G. Masaryk. Kramar, the leader of the Young Czech party, for years representative of the middle class of Bohemia, yielded to no one in his devotion to the race from which he sprang or in the sincerity of his intentions to serve the Czech people to the best of his great ability. But being a wealthy manufacturer, a “practical” man, intent upon gaining results in the Vienna parliament, he failed to draw the only conclusion necessitated by the changed European situation which he so well understood. He realized that Germany was “peacefully penetrating” the Danube monarchy, that the very existence of the Czech nation was imperiled; on the floor of the parliament and in the Austrian delegation he admonished the powers ruling in Vienna that the fate of the Empire and of the dynasty was just as much at stake as the fate of Bohemia, should German designs prevail.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

A History of Bohemian Literature【電子書籍】[ Count Francis L?tzow ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A History of Bohemian Literature【電子書籍】[ Count Francis L?tzow ]

If it were possible to compare the greatest literature of the world with that of a small and little-known country, it might be said that the "Question of the Manuscripts" is the necessary beginning of every account of Bohemian literature, just as the "Homeric Question" must form the commencement of every work on the literature of Greece. The "Question of the Manuscripts" turns on the genuineness of two documents which first became known at the beginning of the present century, and were supposed to be the most ancient writings in the Bohemian language. These manuscripts have from the first attracted great notice, and they gave a great impulse to the revival of Bohemian literature in the present century. The Manuscript of K?niginhof is also by no means devoid of poetical merit, and these documents will therefore always have to be mentioned, even should it be finally proved that both were forgeries. The manuscript that was first discovered is the so-called Rukopis Kralodvorsky or Manuscript of K?niginhof. It was stated that this document had been found by Venceslas Hanka (afterwards librarian of the Bohemian Museum) in the tower of the deanery church of K?niginhof, or Kr?lov? Dvur, on September 16, 1817. It was further declared that Hanka's attention had first been attracted to the manuscript by Bor?, chaplain at K?niginhof, who was previously aware of its existence. The discovery at K?niginhof immediately created great sensation even in countries very distant from Bohemia, a circumstance all the more worthy of note as Bohemia was then even more unknown than it now is. Goethe was greatly interested in the new discovery, to which he frequently refers in his writings, and he himself published a translation, or rather adaptation, of the Kytice (Nosegay), one of the lyrical poems of the Manuscript of K?niginhof. Numerous translations of these poems into English, German, Polish, Russian, Italian, and other languages soon appeared, and the interest was of course yet far greater in Bohemia itself, where they became the recognised models for the Bohemian writers who were then beginning to revive the national language. Though some doubts as to the genuineness of the manuscript were expressed from the moment of its appearance, yet the majority of the Bohemian learned men, including such authorities as Palack? and ?afa?ik, firmly maintained its ancient origin. Within the last twenty years a change has taken place. Perhaps the majority of the Bohemian philologists of the present day believe the manuscript to be a forgery, that is to say, that it was written at the beginning of the present century. Its genuineness has been attacked from the pal?ographic point of view; it has been attempted to prove anachronisms in the manuscript; and it has been asserted that it contains verbal formations unknown to the early Bohemian language. A chemical examination of the manuscript has, however, proved that it differs in no way from authentic Bohemian manuscripts of the fourteenth century, and it can therefore now be affirmed that the Manuscript of K?niginhof cannot be attacked from the point of view of pal?ography. The defenders of the manuscript have been less successful in their endeavours to disprove the statement that it contains anachronisms, which could not have been committed by a writer of the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The almost complete darkness which surrounds the condition of the Slavonic race in very early times renders it very difficult to form a judgment on many of the disputed points. The defenders of the manuscript also lay stress on its similarity to undoubtedly genuine collections of early Bohemian writings, such as those known as the Manuscript of K?niggr?tz and that of St. Vitus. It is true that the contents of these collections differ somewhat from those of the manuscript, and are mainly of a religious character.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

According to Wikipedia: "Robert William Service (January 16, 1874 September 11, 1958) was a poet and writer, sometimes referred to as "the Bard of the Yukon". He is best-known for his writings on the Canadian North, including the poems "The Shooting of Dan McGrew", "The Law of the Yukon", and "The Cremation of Sam McGee". His writing was so expressive that his readers took him for a hard-bitten old Klondike prospector, not the later-arriving bank clerk he actually was. In addition to his Yukon works, Service also wrote poetry set in locales as diverse as South Africa, Afghanistan, and New Zealand."

A timeless exploration of love, sacrifice, and artistic expression in bohemian Paris【電子書籍】[ E. F. Benson ]

E. F. Benson's "Peter" is a masterful exploration of human relationships, identity, and societal expectations, set against the backdrop of early 20th-century England. The novel intricately weaves a narrative that unfolds through the life of its eponymous character, Peter, who navigates his complex emotions and interactions in a world marked by both rigid hierarchies and the emerging modern sensibilities. Benson's prose is characterized by its sharp wit and rich, evocative descriptions, echoing the literary style of his contemporaries while also pioneering themes of introspection and personal freedom. This work stands as a significant contribution to the literature of the period that examined the subtleties of social dynamics and the individual's quest for authenticity amid societal constraints. E. F. Benson was a prolific author, best known for his Mapp and Lucia series, which showcases his acute observations of social mores and character studies. His upbringing in a predominantly Anglican household and his education at Cambridge University fostered a keen understanding of the intricacies of class and community, which are reflected in "Peter." His own experiences as a member of the LGBTQ+ community likely informed his exploration of identity within the novel, as he artfully navigates the boundaries drawn by society. I wholeheartedly recommend "Peter" for readers who appreciate nuanced character studies and social commentary. Benson's insightful portrayal of Peter's journey offers a rich tapestry of emotions and reflections that resonate with contemporary themes of self-discovery and the quest for belonging.
A certain magician being angry with a young peasant, came to the hut where he lived and stuck a new and sharp knife under the threshold, repeating an incantation as he did so, accompanied by this wish: "May this peasant be seized and carried away by the wind into the air, there to remain for seven whole years." The peasant went into the fields to make hay, when all of a sudden a great wind arose. It scattered the hay over the field, and seized the peasant himself. In vain he struggled, in vain he caught hold with his strong arms of hedge or branch of tree, the invisible power lifted him up and carried him away. Borne, as if on the wings of the wind, among the clouds, he flew like a wild pigeon. The sun began already to disappear in the west, and the hungry peasant could see the smoke ascending from the cottages in his village, where supper was cooking. At one time he could almost touch the chimney pots with his feet, and he screamed aloud for help. But he screamed and wept in vain; no one heard his cries, or saw his bitter tears. He was thus carried about in the air for nearly three months, and by that time, from hunger and thirst, had become dried up like a piece of wood. He travelled over a large part of the world, but the wind carried him chiefly over the village where he had lived. With tears in his eyes he would look on the hut where dwelt his betrothed. He would see her coming out with dinner for some one of the family. He would spread his thin, cold arms towards her, and call her by her name. His voice would die in his throat, while the girl would not even look up. Away and away the peasant was borne by the wind. Presently he saw the cruel magician standing before his own house. The magician looked up and shouted to him: "Ah, I have not done with you yet; you shall be thus carried by the wind over your own village for seven long years. You shall suffer constantly, and wish you were dead; but you shall not be able to die." "Oh, my little father, my master, forgive me if I have offended you!" cried the poor fellow from above. "Look at me; see, my mouth is as dry as a chip! Look at my face and handsーthe flesh is gone from them, and the bones only are left! Have mercy upon me!"
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
