IT was Monday morning. Benno loitered at the packer's bench. Two hundred and fifty years later, by the time Brandy, a floundering, trashy, Latin-spewing cocktail waitress, steps ashore in the 1980s, Unalaska Island has absorbed their dark secret--a secret that is both salvation and shame. In a tense interplay between past and present, And She Was explores Aleut history, mummies, conquest, survival, and the seamy side of the 1980s in a fishing boomtown at the edge of the world, where a lost woman struggles to understand the gray shades between heroism and evil, and between freedom and bondage.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Black Panther Party and Transformative Pedagogy Place-Based Education in Philadelphia【電子書籍】[ Omari L. Dyson ]

The Black Panther Party and Transformative Pedagogy: Place-Based Education in Philadelphia, by Omari L. Dyson,is the first scholarly text to detail the social relief efforts of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Branch of the Black Panther Party. Through a postcolonial lens, this story captures the lived resistances, highlights the socio-historical context, and examines the discourse of former members of the Black Panther Party and local residents of Philadelphia from 1968-1974. Overall, this book provides insight from a multiplicity of sources to better capture the identity(-ies) and complexity of the organization. Not only does this text resolve a dearth in the literature that highlights the multiple facets of the Black Panther Party (especially at the local level), but it serves as a template on effective strategies for researchers, educators, and policymakers to implement on their quest for social and educational transformation.

The schoolhouse at Waddy was not in the least like any of the trim State

buildings that now decorate every Victorian township and mark every

mining or agricultural centre that can scrape together two or three

meagre classes; it was the result of a purely local enthusiasm, and was

erected by public subscription shortly after Mr. Joel Ham, B.A., arrived

in the district and let it be understood that he did not intend to go

away again. Having discovered that it was impossible to make anything

else of Mr. Joel Ham, Waddy resolved to make a schoolmaster of him. A

meeting was held in the Drovers' Arms, numerous speeches, all much more

eloquently expressive of the urgent need of convenient scholastic

institutions than the orators imagined, were delivered by representative

men, and a resolution embodying the determination of the residents to

erect a substantial building and install Mr. J. Ham, B.A., as headmaster

was carried unanimously.

The original contributors were not expected to donate money towards the

good cause; they gave labour and material. The work of erection was

commenced next day. Neither plans nor specifications were supplied, and

every contributor was his own architect. Timber of all sorts and shapes

came in from fifty sources. The men of the day shift at the mines worked

at the building in the evening; those on the four-o'clock shift put in an

hour or two in the morning, and mates off the night shift lent a hand at

any time during the day, one man taking up the work where the other left

off. Consequently--and as there was no ruling mind and no general

design--the school when finished seemed to lack continuity, so to speak.

As an architectural effort it displayed evidence of many excellent

intentions, but could not be called a brilliant success as a

whole--although one astute Parliamentary candidate did secure an

overwhelming majority of votes in Waddy after declaring the schoolhouse

to be an ornament to the township. The public-spirited persons who

contributed windows, it was tacitly agreed, were quite justified in

putting in those windows according to the dictates of their own fancy,

even if the result was somewhat bizarre. Jock Summers gave a bell hung in

a small gilded dome, and this was fixed on the roof right in the centre

of the building, mainly for picturesque effect; but as there was no rope

attached and no means of reaching the bell--and it never occurred to

anybody to rectify the deficiency--Jock's gift remained to the end merely

an ornamental adjunct. So also with Sam Brierly's Gothic portico. Sam

expended much time and ingenuity in constructing the portico, and it was

built on to the street end of the schoolhouse, although there was no door

there, the only entrance being at the back.

**Named a 2018 Notable Work of Nonfiction by The Washington Post

NOW A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER** ? Winner, The 2018 Southern Book Prize

NAMED A BEST/MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2018 BY: Chicago Tribune ? Time ? Publisher's Weekly

A stunning follow up to New York Times bestseller Tears We Cannot Stop

The Washington Post: "Passionately written."
Chris Matthews, MSNBC: "A beautifully written book."
Shaun King: “I kid you not?I think it’s the most important book I’ve read all year...”

Harry Belafonte: **“Dyson has finally written the book I always wanted to read...**a tour de force.”

Joy-Ann Reid: A work of searing prose and seminal brilliance... Dyson takes that once in a lifetime conversation between black excellence and pain and the white heroic narrative, and drives it right into the heart of our current politics and culture, leaving the reader reeling and reckoning."

Robin D. G. Kelley: “Dyson masterfully refracts our present racial conflagration... he reminds us that Black artists and intellectuals bear an awesome responsibility to speak truth to power."

**President Barack Obama: *"***Everybody who speaks after Michael Eric Dyson pales in comparison.”

In 2015 BLM activist Julius Jones confronted Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with an urgent query: “What in your heart has changed that’s going to change the direction of this country?” “I don’t believe you just change hearts,” she protested. “I believe you change laws.”

The fraught conflict between conscience and politics ? between morality and power ? in addressing race hardly began with Clinton. An electrifying and traumatic encounter in the sixties crystallized these furious disputes.

In 1963 Attorney General Robert Kennedy sought out James Baldwin to explain the rage that threatened to engulf black America. Baldwin brought along some friends, including playwright Lorraine Hansberry, psychologist Kenneth Clark, and a valiant activist, Jerome Smith. It was Smith’s relentless, unfiltered fury that set Kennedy on his heels, reducing him to sullen silence.

Kennedy walked away from the nearly three-hour meeting angry ? that the black folk assembled didn’t understand politics, and that they weren’t as easy to talk to as Martin Luther King. But especially that they were more interested in witness than policy. But Kennedy’s anger quickly gave way to empathy, especially for Smith. “I guess if I were in his shoes…I might feel differently about this country.” Kennedy set about changing policy ? the meeting having transformed his thinking in fundamental ways.

There was more: every big argument about race that persists to this day got a hearing in that room. Smith declaring that he’d never fight for his country given its racist tendencies, and Kennedy being appalled at such lack of patriotism, tracks the disdain for black dissent in our own time. His belief that black folk were ungrateful for the Kennedys’ efforts to make things better shows up in our day as the charge that black folk wallow in the politics of ingratitude and victimhood. The contributions of black queer folk to racial progress still cause a stir. BLM has been accused of harboring a covert queer agenda. The immigrant experience, like that of Kennedy ? versus the racial experience of Baldwin ? is a cudgel to excoriate black folk for lacking hustle and ingenuity. The questioning of whether folk who are interracially partnered can authentically communicate black interests persists. And we grapple still with the responsibility of black intellectuals and artists to bring about social change.

What Truth Sounds Like exists at the tense intersection of the conflict between politics and prophecy ? of whether we embrace political resolution or moral redemption to fix our fractured racial landscape. The future of race and democracy hang in the balance.

“It is possible to invent a single machine which can be used to compute any computable sequence,” twenty-four-year-old Alan Turing announced in 1936. In Turing’s Cathedral, George Dyson focuses on a small group of men and women, led by John von Neumann at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, who built one of the first computers to realize Alan Turing’s vision of a Universal Machine. Their work would break the distinction between numbers that mean things and numbers that do thingsーand our universe would never be the same.

Using five kilobytes of memory (the amount allocated to displaying the cursor on a computer desktop of today), they achieved unprecedented success in both weather prediction and nuclear weapons design, while tackling, in their spare time, problems ranging from the evolution of viruses to the evolution of stars.

Dyson’s account, both historic and prophetic, sheds important new light on how the digital universe exploded in the aftermath of World War II. The proliferation of both codes and machines was paralleled by two historic developments: the decoding of self-replicating sequences in biology and the invention of the hydrogen bomb. It’s no coincidence that the most destructive and the most constructive of human inventions appeared at exactly the same time.

How did code take over the world? In retracing how Alan Turing’s one-dimensional model became John von Neumann’s two-dimensional implementation, Turing’s Cathedral offers a series of provocative suggestions as to where the digital universe, now fully three-dimensional, may be heading next.

George Sully stopped every few seconds to listen in the cold night. He tried to steady his frayed nerve and might have done so but cold steel pricked his neck, just below his right ear. The hairs on his nape stood on end and his mind squealed in silent terror.

"Move again and I'll leave you for the wolves."

His body froze, fear gripping every nerve.

Joel Bannon eased the pressure off the Bowie. "Man can't take a hundred steps in this country on bare feet or you'll slice 'em to the bone. Know this for the fact it is, Sully. If the land doesn't bury you, I will. If the natives don't blister you, I will. If bears don't gut you, I will. Nowhere you can go I won't be there. Crawl to the edge of the earth, to the last piece of land you can find. I will be there."

A lifetime of candid reflections from physicist Freeman Dyson, “an acute observer of personality and human foibles” (New York Times Book Review).

Written between 1940 and the late 1970s, the postwar recollections of renowned physicist Freeman Dyson have been celebrated as an historic portrait of modern science and its greatest players, including Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, and Hans Bethe. Chronicling the stories of those who were engaged in solving some of the most challenging quandaries of twentieth-century physics, Dyson lends acute insight and profound observations to a life’s work spent chasing what Einstein called those “deep mysteries that Nature intends to keep for herself.” Whether reflecting on the drama of World War II, the moral dilemmas of nuclear development, the challenges of the space program, or the demands of raising six children, Dyson’s annotated letters reveal the voice of one “more creative than almost anyone else of his generation” (Kip Thorne). An illuminating work in these trying times, Maker of Patterns is an eyewitness account of the scientific discoveries that define our modern age.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Leaders in conflict Bush and Rumsfeld in Iraq【電子書籍】[ Stephen Dyson ]

Beneath the violence of the US war in Iraq was a subterranean conflict between President Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, rooted in their different beliefs and leadership styles. Bush was prepared to pay a high cost in American lives, treasure, and prestige to win. Rumsfeld favoured turning the war over to the Iraqis, and was comfortable with the risk that Iraq would disintegrate into chaos. Only after Bush removed Rumsfeld in late 2006 did he bring US strategy into line with his goals, sending additional troops to Iraq and committing to continued US involvement. In Leaders in conflict, Stephen Benedict Dyson shows that Bush and Rumsfeld thought about international politics, and about leadership, in divergent ways, and demonstrates the impact these differences had on the course of the war. The book is based upon more than two dozen interviews with administration insiders, and will appeal to those interested in the US presidency, US foreign policy, leadership and wartime decision making.
