【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Turkey The Insane and the Melancholy【電子書籍】[ Ece Temelkuran ]

Starting with the basic question "what is this place?", award-winning journalist and novelist Ece Temelkuran guides us through her "beloved country". In challenging the authoritarian AKP government ? for which she lost her job as a journalist ? Temelkuran draws strength and wisdom from people, places and artistic expression.

The result is a beautifully rendered account of the struggles, hopes and tragedies which make Turkey what it is today. Lamenting the commercialisation and authoritarianism which increasingly characterises Turkish society, Temelkuran sees hope in the Gezi Park protests of 2013, the electoral breakthrough of the progressive HDP party in 2015 and in the simple kindness of ordinary people.

Much more than either straightforward history or memoir, Turkey: the Insane the Melancholy is like sitting with a friendly stranger who, over raki or coffee, reveals the secrets of this rich and complex country ? the historic "bridge" between east and west.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Atat?rk Father of the Republic of Turkey【電子書籍】[ George W. Gawrych ]

Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk was one of the most significant political leaders of the twentieth century. He rose from obscure origins to become the founder of the new Republic of Turkey out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire and go on to radically transform Turkish society. How should one understand Atat?rk and his legacy?
In this book, George Gawrych studies Atat?rk's career in detail, showing how Atat?rk married the traits of the classic military man-of-action with those of the intellectual, theorist and pragmatist as a statesman. Gawrych places Atat?rk in the context of his times to reveal how he harnessed wider forces to set Turkey on a path of secular nationalism and comprehensive modernization. His legacy can be seen everywhere in Turkey today, from the role and rights of women in society to the struggle for developing a democracy in the Republic. Gawrych addresses the costs of Atat?rk's policies, including the suppression of minorities and the imposition of a cult of personality and authoritarian rule in the name of 'Turkification'. The book presents a nuanced analysis of a complex figure who consciously created a living legacy that still casts a shadow over Turkey's political and intellectual discourse.

One of the obstacles which lie in the path of the European when he wants to arrive at the true opinion of the Oriental is that the European, especially if he be an official, is almost always in a hurry. If, he thinks, the Oriental has anything to say to me, why does he not say it and go away? I am quite prepared to listen most attentively, but my time is valuable and I have a quantity of other business to do; I must, therefore, really ask him to come to the point at once. This frame of mind is quite fatal if one wishes to arrive at the truth. In order to attain this object, the Oriental must be allowed to tell his story and put forward his ideas in his own way; and his own way is generally a lengthy, circuitous, and very involved way. But if any one has the patience to listen, he will sometimes be amply rewarded for his pains. I once asked a high Moslem authority how he reconciled the fact that an apostate could now no longer be executed with the alleged immutability of the Sacred Law. The casuistry of his reply would have done honor to a Spanish Inquisitor. The Kadi, he said, does not recognise any change in the Law. He would, in the case of an apostate, pronounce sentence of death according to the Law, but it was for the secular authorities to carry out the sentence. If they failed in their duty, the sin of disobeying the Law would lie on their heads. Cases of apostasy are very rare, but during my tenure of office in Egypt, I had to interfere once or twice to protect from maltreatment Moslems who had been converted to Christianity by the American missionaries. The reasons why Islam as a social system has been a complete failure are manifold. First and foremost, Islam keeps women in a position of marked inferiority. In the second place, Islam, speaking not so much through the Koran as through the traditions which cluster round the Koran, crystallises religion and law into one inseparable and immutable whole, with the result that all elasticity is taken away from the social system. If to this day an Egyptian goes to law over a question of testamentary succession, his case is decided according to the antique principles which were laid down as applicable to the primitive society of the Arabian Peninsula in the seventh century.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Young Atat?rk From Ottoman Soldier to Statesman of Turkey【電子書籍】[ George W. Gawrych ]

Mustafa Kemal ? latterly and better known as Atat?rk - is without doubt the most famous figure in modern Turkish history. But what was his path to power? And how did his early career as a soldier in the Ottoman army affect his later decisions as President?

The Young Atat?rk tracks the lesser covered period of Kemal's life ? from the War of Independence to the founding of the Republic. George W. Gawrych shows that it is only by understanding Kemal's military career that one can fully comprehend how he evolved as one of the twentieth century's most extraordinary statesmen. Gawrych also contributes to the understanding of Kemal by presenting a systematic and critical analysis of his military writings, orders, actions, and letters as well as his political decisions, speeches, proclamations, and private correspondences.

Soldiering helped shape Kemal's critical reasoning, personal values and emotional intelligence. His experiences as an officer and commander forced him to adjust theories to practices in order to solve problems and make decisions. But Kemal was a natural political leader and his broad intellectual interests and personal studies helped prepare him for political leadership. Gawrych demonstrates that in the last year of the War of Independence Kemal excelled as both Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

Gawrych incorporates previously-unstudied Ottoman archival documents and is the first Western scholar to conduct extensive research on Kemal in the military archives of the Turkish General Staff. This book is essential reading for those seeking to understand the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and the part that Kemal played in that process.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Travels in Turkey and Back to England【電子書籍】[ Edmund Chishull ]

Eight of our nation having lately designed a visit to the church of Ephesus, by name, Messieurs Whalley, Dunster, Coventry, Ashe, Turner, Clotterbooke, Frye, and Chishull, we had first a general meeting, to agree upon what was requisite to the resolution we had taken; at which time Mr. Whalley kindly undertaking the care of our provisions, and the government of our intended journey, we propos’d to make a circuit of our way to Ephesus, that so we might have a larger satisfaction in the sight of those delightsome places, for which Asia Minor was always so justly celebrated. In prosecution of this design we intended to make our first con?ck at Norl?cui, to which place having this morning dispatched our baggage upon mules, under the care of a janisary and two servants, we ourselves set forward about three in the afternoon, with another janisary, dragoman, servants, and other requisites. Our company completed the number of twenty three light horse. Six or seven other gentlemen of the English factory were pleased to accompany us as far as Norl?cui, where arriving in less than two hours, we all found a kind and hospitable reception from Mr. Benjamin Jones and his lady. After a short repast our freinds returned back to Smyrna, and left us employed in providing for ourselves and horses. This care had now taken up the evening, when it being proposed, that morning and evening prayers should be constantly read to the company during the whole journey, we all readily embraced the motion. Hereupon we immediately put this design in execution, and then pitched upon our lodging.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Turkey, the Great Powers, and the Bagdad Railway: A Study in Imperialism【電子書籍】[ Edward Mead Earle ]

The Chester concessions and the Anglo-American controversy regarding the Mesopotamian oilfields are but two conspicuous instances of the rapid development of American activity in the Near East. Turkey, already an important market for American goods, gives promise of becoming a valuable source of raw materials for American factories and a fertile field for the investment of American capital. Thus American religious interests in the Holy Land, American educational interests in Anatolia and Syria, and American humanitarian interests in Armenia, are now supplemented by substantial American economic interests in the natural resources of Asia Minor. Political stability and economic progress in Turkey no longer are matters of indifference to business men and politicians in the United States; therefore the Eastern Questionーso often a cause of warーassumes a new importance to Americans. This book will have served a useful purpose ifーin discussing the conflicting political, cultural, and economic policies of the Great Powers in the Near East during the past three decadesーit contributes to a sympathetic understanding of a very complicated problem and suggests to the reader some dangers which American statesmanship would do well to avoid. Students of history and international relations will find in the story of the Bagdad Railway a laboratory full of rich materials for an analysis of modern economic imperialism and its far-reaching consequences. The assistance of many persons who have been intimately associated with the Bagdad Railway has enabled the author to examine records and documents not heretofore available to the historian. To these persons the author is glad to assign a large measure of any credit which may accrue to this book as an authoritative and definitive account of German railway enterprises in the Near East. He wishes especially to mention: Dr. Arthur von Gwinner, of the Deutsche Bank, president of the Anatolian and Bagdad Railway Companies; Dr. Karl Helfferich, formerly Imperial German Minister of Finance, erstwhile managing director of the Deutsche Bank, and at present a member of the Reichstag; Sir Henry Babington Smith, an associate of the late Sir Ernest Cassel, a director of the Bank of England, president of the National Bank of Turkey, and at one time representative of the British bondholders on the Ottoman Public Debt Administration; Djavid Bey, Ottoman Minister of Finance during the r?gime of the Young Turks, an economic expert at the first Lausanne Conference, and at present Turkish representative on the Ottoman Public Debt Administration; Mr. Ernest Rechnitzer, a banker of Paris and London, a competitor for the Bagdad Railway concession in 18981899; Rear Admiral Colby M.
What would world literature look like, if we stopped referring to the “West”? Starting with the provocative premise that the “‘West’ is ten percent of the planet”, World Literature Decentered is the first book to decenter Eurocentric discourses of global literature and global history ? not just by deconstructing or historicizing them, but by actively providing an alternative. Looking at a series of themes across three literatures (Mexico, Turkey and Bengal), the book examines hotels, melancholy, orientalism, femicide and the ghost story in a series of literary traditions outside the “West”. The non-West, the book argues, is no fringe group or token minority in need of attention ? on the contrary, it constitutes the overwhelming majority of this world.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Nancy Knudsen never meant to go to Istanbul.

Maybe she might have included it as part of a holiday along with other dazzling European cities such as Venice, Paris or Salzburg. But the idea of actually living in a Muslim country as an ordinary citizen rather than tourist or expat corporate executive, would never have occurred to her.

Knudsen’s story is vivid, lively and sometimes hilarious, full of insights into things she wished she’d known before she arrived in an all-black apartment above a sports field, with not a word of Turkish. She found almost nothing in guidebooks or histories to help her understand what seemed at first an inexplicable culture.

In the course of her tale, she sets out to decipher many of the intricacies of Turkey and its lifestyle, and of Istanbul in particular. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Travel Guide to Homer On the Trail of Odysseus Through Turkey and the Mediterranean【電子書籍】[ John Freely ]

In October 1945 at the age of 19, John Freely passed the southernmost tip of Crete on his way home from the war in China, just as Odysseus did on his homeward voyage from the battle of Troy. He has been bewitched by Homer and the lands of Homer's epics ever since. As the culmination of a life spent exploring both these lands and the stories by, and connected to, Homer, Freely has created a captivating traveller's guide to Homer's lost world and to his epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, investigating where such places as the Land of the Lotus Eaters are and what it was about the landscapes of Greece and Turkey that so inspired Homer - the greatest classical epic poet. With unparalleled knowledge and passion, John Freely guides the traveller through all of those places linked to Homer that can be identified and brings Homer and his world vividly to life, revealing how the Homeric epics continue to echo through the ages in literature, art, legend and folklore.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Murder, as you know, comes in all shapes and sizes. It also comes at inconvenient times. Christmas, for example. And of unexpected death.
Lock the doors. Draw the curtains. Settle down in your armchair. Pour yourself a drink. And enjoy ten stories by masters of the genre. Georgian England. 1960s and 1980s England. Twenty-first-century Africa, Canada, the USA. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Writing in Red Literature and Revolution Across Turkey and the Soviet Union【電子書籍】[ Nergis Ert?rk ]

The republic of Turkey and the Soviet Union both emerged from the wreckage of empires surrounding World War I, and pathways of literary exchange soon opened between the two revolutionary states. Even as the Turkish government pursued a friendly relationship with the USSR, it began to persecute communist writers. Whether going through official channels or fleeing repression, many Turkish writers traveled to the Soviet Union during the 1920s and 1930s, publishing original work, editing prominent literary journals, and translating both Russian classics and Soviet literature into Turkish.

Writing in Red traces the literary and exilic itineraries of Turkish communist and former communist writers, examining revolutionary aesthetics and politics across Turkey and the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s through the 1960s. Nergis Ert?rk considers a wide range of textsーspanning genres such as erotic comedy, historical fiction and film, and socialist realist novels and theaterーby writers including N?zim Hikmet, V?l? Nureddin, Nizamettin Nazif, Suat Dervi?, and Abidin Dino. She argues that these works belong simultaneously to modern Turkish literature, a transnational Soviet republic of letters, and the global literary archive of world revolution, alongside those of other writers who made the “magic pilgrimage” to Moscow. Exploring how Turkish communist writers on the run produced a remarkable transnational literature of dissent, Writing in Red offers a new account of global revolutionary literary culture.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】MY HOME, YOUR HOME Our Stories of the Turkey?Greece Population Exchange【電子書籍】[ Evrim ?zsoy ]

As a third-generation descendant of the Population Exchange, I consider writing this play a debt to my ancestors. It is difficult to leave your home, your homeland, and your memories behind in the land where you were born… The hardest part is that this decision was made by others and that people were forced to comply. The stories I heard from my grandmother, combined with the books I read, took my soul to different places. I felt that this forced migration created an unforgettable trauma among those who lived through it and that it had been unconsciously passed down to future generations. During my research, I went through emotionally difficult times and wrote this play in tears. Unfortunately, returning to read and work on this play again takes courage. Sometimes, I feel that I am not that strong. I hope history will never again make anyone experience such pain.

For nearly three years, I wanted to write about a family who moved into the house of another family that had migrated due to the population exchange, but I could not decide on the subject. I waited… My grandmother G?ls?m had migrated from the village of Samakol in Pravi?te (according to one account, the blacksmith master Karag?z was also born in this village) with her son Ali and daughter-in-law Ay?e. The family settled in Ku?adas? and was given a small olive grove. My uncles, aunts, and father were born in Ku?adas?. On my mother’s side, they had migrated from K?zanl?k, Bulgaria. Those were the years when wars never seemed to end… Behiye was the name of my grandmother’s mother. I included the names G?ls?m and Behiye in the play for this reason. Angeliki is the name of a friend from Thessaloniki I met while studying in Italy. Sofokli was the name of one of my other friends’ younger brothers. Fotini was both the name of another Thessalonian friend’s mother and daughter. Beyo?lu Ali was the name of an elder in my family whom I never met and of whom I have no memory.

I wanted these people to sit down, talk, and tell each other what they had lived through because there could be no one else who could truly understand them. I wanted Angeliki from S?ke’s Do?anbey village to be like our old neighbor, said to be of Greek origin ー a woman in deep mourning. A thin woman dressed in black, burying a love that lasted a hundred years deep in her heart… In Do?anbey village, I saw how a wooden door was used to keep the pigs out. While writing, I did not forget the village and Miletus. The great civilization destroyed by the Persians… I associated Manoli’s guiding of English and French officers through Priene and Miletus with the artifacts smuggled from the ancient cities of our country during the Ottoman Empire. In my mind, I pictured a black-and-white photograph of a foreign officer discovering an ancient city.

I wanted Behiye to love the figs filled with walnuts that my grandfather H?seyin, my mother’s father, took with him when he went to work in the S?ke plain. Like my Cretan aunt M?cessem, Behiye loved herbs and various foods.

I would not have known that ?zmir and Thessaloniki were once beautiful if I had not read about them. It was difficult for me to accept the destruction of these beautiful cities, once considered paradise. It was not a utopia that people of different religions lived freely, speaking their own languages.

Before the Population Exchange, it was said that the appearance of a comet or harsh winters were signs of bad luck. I wanted this to serve as such a sign, too.

The Erotokritos Epic was very important on the island of Crete; many young people knew some stanzas by heart. The emergence of an epic from the center of civilization excited me deeply.

The story of Angeliki’s sister finding a ring while working in the fields near Balat S?ke actually belongs to my grandmother Kadriye’s sister. I had often heard from my grandmother how the girl with the black hair engraved on the ring found in Balat had committed suicide because she could not be with her beloved.

My mother’s step-uncle was Albanian. The woman he married was, like Beyo?lu Ali’s stepmother, fair-skinned and large. Her first husband was indeed a bandit. He went from village to village collecting tribute, just like ?bram’s father. One day, a villager, summoning his courage, shot him with a rifle from behind a wooden door. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. The man they feared was gone. Newspapers of the time even reported it. It was said that the newspaper clipping was still kept. I did not forget these things either…

My mother’s great-uncle lived on Heybeliada; I identified him with Angeliki’s uncle Kostas, whom she would one day visit. The play ‘The Girl from Samos’ and the song “The Girl from Samos” were always among my notes, never to be forgotten.

I wanted the characters to share with the audience about the peach orchards plundered to build villas in Davutlar, the aromatic plums of Fethiye, and the taste of Ayval?k’s olives. I wrote Fotini’s breakfast table ー the one she left behind when departing her home ー while thinking of the breakfast tables abandoned by people in S?ke who ran to the station shouting “the infidels are coming.” When the arriving soldiers wanted to eat the food, their commanders warned them, “It’s poisoned, don’t eat it.” I wished that the years when no one trusted anyone would never be lived again.

The sweet leavened bread made with chickpea yeast from S?ke being sent to the opposite islands… The honey of Ikaria… The fried lake fish at Sel?uk Hac?suluk Station… The small quails my father brought from hunting and my mother being a seamstress like G?ls?m… Beyo?lu Ali’s father speaking to the olive tree like Homer… Fotini burying her child, just as my aunt’s daughter was lost… And from every death, a life being born… ‘My Home, Your Home’ is hidden in the Greek neighborhoods of Ku?adas? and S?ke where I was born and raised.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
