The Lion and the Nightingale A Journey Through Modern Turkey【電子書籍】[ Kaya Gen? ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Lion and the Nightingale A Journey Through Modern Turkey【電子書籍】[ Kaya Gen? ]

Turkey is a land torn between East and West, and between its glorious past and a dangerous, unpredictable future. After the violence of an attempted military coup against President Erdogan in 2016, an event which shocked the world, journalist and novelist Kaya Genc travelled around his country on a quest to find the places and people in whom the contrasts of Turkey's rich past meet. As suicide bombers attack Istanbul, and journalists and teachers are imprisoned, he walks the streets of the famous Ottoman neighbourhoods, telling the stories of the ordinary Turks who live among the contradictions and conflicts of Anatolia, one of the world's oldest civilizations. The Lion and the Nightingale presents the spellbinding story of a country whose history has been split between East and West, between violence and beauty - between the roar of the lion and the song of the nightingale.

Weaving together a mixture of memoir, interview and his own autobiography, Genc takes the reader on a contemporary journey through the contradictory soul of the Turkish nation.

Fethiye is a small seaport on Turkey's Aegean shore where each summer starting in May, tourists from across Europe and England flock to exchange gloomy skies and rain for sand and sea and sometimes sex beneath a hot, bright Mediterranean sun. Connie Cullingsworth, whose life this novel is a portrait of, flies to Fethiye to rescue her daughter, who has been robbed and will need money. Accompanying Connie is her second husband, Charles, a computer whiz who lives in his world of cyberspace and remains indifferent to her needs and desires, as she discovers too late. A teacher schooled in Romanticism, Connie had always dreamt of seeing the Mediterranean, birthplace of western art and literature; and in Bea's Bar, a favorite haunt for English expatriates, she meets Omer, whose charismatic charm she finds she is unable to resist when he offers to teach her to swim. As a girl, Connie had almost drowned in a Scottish loch, and ever since, she has feared water.

She nonetheless agrees to the swimming lessons, perhaps sensing from the very outset they are an invitation to more than just lessons, first in the water of the Blue Lagoon where Omer holds her so close! Then, as she prepares for her return to cold rainy Manchester, he tempts her with a blue voyage aboard a pretty Turkish gulet to fabled Kekova Sound where, in the ancient ruins above the Sunken City, Omer constructs their bed from eucalyptus leaves. Upon it, in this paradisiacal setting, their love is consummated.

But in the end, Connie must learn that Paradise has its darker side...

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Traveling with Pomegranates A Mother and Daughter Journey to the Sacred Places of Greece, Turkey, and France【電子書籍】[ Sue Monk Kidd ]

An introspective and beautiful dual memoir by the #1 New York Times bestselling novelist and her daughter. Look out for Ann Kidd Taylor's new novel, The Shark Club, which will be published in June 2017.

Sue Monk Kidd has touched millions of readers with her novels The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair and with her acclaimed nonfiction. In this intimate dual memoir, she and her daughter, Ann, offer distinct perspectives as a fifty-something and a twenty-something, each on a quest to redefine herself and to rediscover each other.

Between 1998 and 2000, Sue and Ann travel throughout Greece and France. Sue, coming to grips with aging, caught in a creative vacuum, longing to reconnect with her grown daughter, struggles to enlarge a vision of swarming bees into a novel. Ann, just graduated from college, heartbroken and benumbed by the classic question about what to do with her life, grapples with a painful depression. As this modern-day Demeter and Persephone chronicle the richly symbolic and personal meaning of an array of inspiring figures and sites, they also each give voice to that most protean of connections: the bond of mother and daughter.

A wise and involving book about feminine thresholds, spiritual growth, and renewal, Traveling with Pomegranates is both a revealing self-portrait by a beloved author and her daughter, a writer in the making, and a momentous story that will resonate with women everywhere.

Twenty Years' Residence among the People of Turkey: Bulgarians, Greeks, Albanians, Turks, and Armenians【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Twenty Years' Residence among the People of Turkey: Bulgarians, Greeks, Albanians, Turks, and Armenians【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

No one who has talked with many people on the Eastern Question can have failed to remark the wide difference of opinion held on things which ought to be matters of certainty, and on which two opinions ought to be impossible. This divergence of view is only a very natural consequence of the want of any book of authority on the subject. How is one to learn what manner of men these Bulgarians and Greeks of Turkey really are? Hitherto our information has been chiefly obtained from newspaper correspondents: and it is hardly necessary to observe that the nature of their selected information depends upon the tendency of the paper. There have, of course, been notable exceptions to this common rule of a party-conscience: the world of journalists is but now lamenting the untimely death of one of its most distinguished members, with whose name honor and truth and indefatigable thoroughness must ever be associated. But granting the honesty and impartiality of a correspondent, allowing the accuracy of his report of what he has seen, it must be conceded that his opportunities for observation are short and hurried, that he judges almost solely from the immediate present, and that by the nature of his profession he is seldom able to make a very long or intimate study of a people’s character. One accepts his reports as the evidence of an eye-witness; but one does not necessarily pledge one’s self to his deductions. For the former task he has every necessary qualification: for the latter he may have none, and he probably has not the most important. Especially unsafe is it to trust to estimates of nations formed hastily on insufficient experience in the midst of general disorder, such as that in which many summary verdicts have lately been composed. But if newspaper correspondents are placed at some disadvantage, what can be said for those well-assured travellers who pay a three months’ visit to Turkey, spend the time pleasantly at Pera, or perhaps at the country-houses of some Pashas, and then consider themselves qualified to judge the merits of each class in each nationality of the mixed inhabitants of the land. It is unpleasant to have to say it; but it is well known that scarcely a single book upon Turkey is based upon a much longer experience than of three months. In this dearth of trustworthy information, it was with no little interest that I learnt that an English lady, who had lived for a great part or her life in various provinces of European and Asiatic Turkey, and whose linguistic powers perfected by experience enabled her to converse equally with Greeks, Turks, and Bulgarians as one of themselves, had formed a collection of notes on the people of Turkeyーon their national characteristics, the way they live, their manners and customs, education, religion, their aims, and ambitions. In any case the observations of one who had for more than twenty years enjoyed such exceptional advantages must be valuable. Of the opportunities of the Author there could be as little doubt as of her conscientious accuracy in recording her experience. The only question was not the quality but the quantity of the information. But in this the manuscript surpassed all expectations. Every page teemed with details of life and character entirely novel to all but Eastern travellers. Every subject connected with the people of Turkey seemed to be exhaustively treated, and it was rarely that any need for more ample information was felt.

Unique-Visual Narratives The Evolution of Art and Literature in Turkey【電子書籍】[ Asya Sakine U?ar ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Unique-Visual Narratives The Evolution of Art and Literature in Turkey【電子書籍】[ Asya Sakine U?ar ]

Art inspires art. The visual and the verbal as two forms of expression often influence each other’s evolution begetting painted stories or canvases of words. In visual narratives, the images or visual elements like paintings, pictures are key to the storytelling and it finds such a correlation in literature that they become integral to the narrative complementing or enhancing the text. Accordingly, this book aims to explore the intersection between visual arts and literature, a field often characterized by its capacity to generate unique and immersive experiences; delving into contemporary Turkish novels like Murat G?lsoy’s Painter Vas?f’s History of Secret Loves and G?nd?z Vassaf’s Painter’s Rebellion. With this book, as far as Turkish art and literature scene is concerned, I hope to present a confluence of brush and pen uncovering how art shapes writing skills and visual journeys are important and effective tools of storytelling within a historical, cultural and artistic context. This book has a great potential to contribute not only to literary studies but also to the broader discourse on the creative process, and the cognitive aspects of creative writing by recognizing and appreciating the role of visual thinking.

It has humor, murder, and a feel for life in a small town all tied together in an enjoyable story. I highly recommend it for folks who like mystery, humor and down home living."

"Parker Bell and the Lady Gatorettes provide a wonderful, crazy mystery. I grew up in a rural area much like this town, and I can totally relate to the attitudes and small-town minds. The author created some kick-ass girlfriends, and helped them to figure or fight their way out of all kinds of dilemmas. I loved it!!"

"When you start you have too finish.
Talia Johnson left her hometown for college, determined to make something of herself and to get far, far away from Liam Parker, the boy who made her teenage years both unforgettable and infuriating. Her family runs a small bakery that's catering the town's Thanksgiving dinner… and guess who's volunteering to help organize it? Liam.

He's taller, still cocky, but somehow… different. The old teasing banter comes back fast, but this time, there's something else in the air something warmer, softer. Christian Women in Turkey - A History A Survey of Notable Christian Women in Asia Minor and Anatolia from 33CE to 2021【電子書籍】[ Rosamund Wilkinson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Christian Women in Turkey - A History A Survey of Notable Christian Women in Asia Minor and Anatolia from 33CE to 2021【電子書籍】[ Rosamund Wilkinson ]

Turkey is the other Holy Land - a country that has been host to Christians since 33CE when the Christian Church was born in Jerusalem. Turkey was referred to as Asia Minor. There were people from the Roman provinces of Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia in Jerusalem when the Church was born. Within twenty years the Apostles Paul, Peter and others had begun to travel in these Roman Provinces establishing churches and following up with letters of encouragement. The New Testament records the evangelisation of the Roman Provinces, in what is now Turkey, in the Acts of the Apostles. From the beginning women were part of Jesus' travelling band of followers and leaders and members of the churches of Galatia, Asia Minor, Cappadocia, Pontus and other Roman Provinces in what is now Turkey. This book records the lives of a selection of the Christian women who have lived in what is now known as Turkey. Their stories are told in the New Testament, church history and church archives. Some are well known and others are little known. Often we only know a name and very sketchy details of their lives but each of these women has made a contribution to the lives of those around them and has lived their lives to the glory of God. They are part of 'the great cloud of witnesses' (Hebrews 12:1)

The book covers the centuries from 33CE to the present day. The book looks at the lives of 53 Christian women who lived in the New Testament Era, Ante-Nicene Era (100 to 325CE), Byzantine Era (325 to 1453), Ottoman Era (1453 to 1923) and the Turkish Republican Era (1923 to the present day). The reader will meet with Christian women who have lived faithfully in these different eras that have played out in what is now modern day Turkey. There continues to be a Christian Church in Turkey that continues faithfully to witness to their experience of the living Christ.

The writer hopes that readers will be inspired to read and research about other women who have lived in what is now modern day Turkey. The selection is eclectic and small. There could surely be many more women who could have had a place in this record of Christian Women who have lived in the last two thousand years in what is now modern day Turkey.

Jack Rumsey and his wife, Bonnie, moved from their small farm in Davie County to the mountains of North Carolina. They lived peacefully in those old mountains and almost forgot the tragedies that happened to Jack's friends. As the time passed, Brian, Mike, and Yeoman's murder had become a faint memory. Until the day that Yeoman's grandson, Cannon, tracked Jack down and confronted him about the mystery of his grandfather's death. Jack felt that he needed to tell Cannon about memories and stories that he had made with Yeoman and their hunting friends. The stories begun at Jack's shed where the friends overindulged in food and drink while swapping lies and planned hunting trips to Texas, and finally Virginia.

Jack and his friends flew to Texas for a greatly anticipated deer hunt in the desert. Once in Texas, they found scorching heat, a lack of big game, and a host Blaine Thomas, incapacitated by alcoholism and nightmares of his tours in Vietnam.

After a disastrous hunt in Texas, Blaine made arrangements for Jack, Brian, Mike, and Yeoman to hunt turkeys in the mountains of Virginia. It is exactly the kind of hunt and opportunity that excites them-beautiful country, challenging game, and a rustic hunting lodge. However, their host had strict rules and an angry and demanding son who seemed determined to take all the fun out of the hunt.

On the first day of the hunt, Jack, Mike and Yeoman thought that Brian killed his turkey and returned to the lodge. On the second day of the hunt, a shot is heard early in the morning. Late that evening when Mike did not return to base camp, Yeoman and Jack figured Mike had bagged a turkey and returned to the main lodge. The third day of the hunt, Jack decided to break the rules and hunt on the mountain where Brian killed his turkey.

Jack shot a turkey and when he went to retrieve his bird, he discovered a pool of dried blood, from what he thought was, a killed deer. He followed the blood trail and found the body of his murdered friend Brian. Scared, Jack frantically tried to find Yeoman, but instead found Mike's lifeless and bloody body. Jack raced back to the main lodge, in a panic, to find Yeoman and get help. Once at the lodge, Jack discovered the host had been killed and laid in a pool of blood. In horror, Jack watched as his friend Yeoman was stabbed and murdered.

Blaine and his nightmares stepped out of the jungles of Vietnam to hunt and kill one more time in the mountains of Virginia.

"Jack, please don't go to Virginia," Bonnie begged. "Something awful is going to happen, I just know it."

"I'M AFRAID YOU WON'T BE COMING HOME!"

A holiday rom-com stuffed with secrets, sarcasm, and a scandalously slow-burn romance.

Harper Quinn, true-crime podcaster and reigning queen of sarcasm, thought surviving Thanksgiving with her dysfunctional family was punishment enough. But when her ex-best friend, and brooding former baking rival, Rowan Hale shows up as the caterer, things go from frosty to flaming faster than you can say “burnt yams.”

Snowed in, turkey-trot-muddied, and stuck decorating with glittery cornucopias and unresolved feelings, Harper and Rowan are forced to face their biggest mess yet: each other. As pies fly, confessions spill, and Frank the turkey stages a daring escape, their former teenage “no-grudge pie pact” resurfaces, along with something much gooier than cranberry sauce.

With Piper’s podcast fans live-tweeting every awkward glance and pie duel, Harper and Rowan’s bitter banter starts to look a whole lot like foreplay. And when an ancient cornucopia artifact begins “magically” coughing up secrets, including one that links Rowan to Harper’s missing dad, their holiday may just end with more than dessert getting served.

Packed with steamy tension, chaotic family drama, and a dash of holiday curse-breaking, this edgy Thanksgiving rom-com will leave you thankful for second chances, and craving pie.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】An Integrated Approach for an Archaeological and Environmental Park in South-Eastern Turkey Tilmen H?y?k【電子書籍】

This book reports on a public archaeology project carried out at the ancient site of Tilmen H?y?k in south-eastern Turkey. The project developed and applied new methodologies and advanced technologies for the planning, design, conservation and management of an archaeological park at a site of high cultural, environmental and touristic interest, representing a significant study case for other archaeological sites in the Mediterranean area and beyond. It highlights state-of-the-art techniques of remote sensing, both for archaeological surveying and for territorial and environmental analysis through the study of high-definition aerial photos and digital photogrammetry. It also takes into account the ecological and environmental characterization data elaborated by environmental and botanic experts, fundamental for the purposes of eco-sustainability and management of the site, through climate and ground measurements aiming at vegetation control and a management model for the archaeological site itself and its green areas of outstanding naturalistic interest. Further, the book comprehensively discusses the analysis of the state of preservation of the archaeological remains and their effective conservation based on a set of measures guided by the principles of minimum intervention, feasibility and low impact on the remains, the site and its landscape. Moreover, it presents novel devices and fixed structures aimed at protecting the fragile archaeological remains and allowing safe access to visitors to the newly created archaeological park. At the intersection of archaeology, architecture and natural sciences, this book appeals to researchers and specialists in archaeology, social sciences, environmental sciences, conservation, architecture and engineering disciplines.

How did a farmer come to create a spiritual sanctuary?

This book is the story behind the creation of Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary on a ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota. An unlikely story that begins in a tin shed called the Turkey Shack.

__________

Author's Preface:

I’m a guy who wears Carhartt jeans, with pliers in the pocket. I also was the CEO of a $65 million agribusiness and the Executive Director of a $100 million-plus science research laboratory during its startup. Along the way I had spiritual experiences that mystified me. I didn’t shave my head, don robes or join an ashram. My life continued, but it was changed.

In 2010, I created Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary on my ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Based on my history, you might think I’m an unlikely person to create a spiritual sanctuary, so let me tell you up front what I am not. I am not a guru. I am not a psychologist, philosopher, theologian or a person with a degree in any field that would seem relevant to spirituality. I do have bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but in agricultural economics. I remain the guy in Carhartts, a Nebraska farm kid, who happened to have some extraordinary experiences that allowed me to see a new world of love, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness.

This book is the story of that journeyーa story that begins in a tin shed called the Turkey Shack.

Dave Snyder

Founder

Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary

Madam Ataturk The First Lady of Modern Turkey【電子書籍】[ Ypek Calyplar ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Madam Ataturk The First Lady of Modern Turkey【電子書籍】[ Ypek Calyplar ]

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is hailed as one of the most charismatic political leaders of the twentieth century, but little is known today about his one and only wife, Latife Hanym. A multilingual intellectual educated at the Sorbonne, Latife's marriage to Ataturk in 1923 set her apart from her contemporaries, raising her to the pinnacle of political power. She played a central role in the creation of a modern and secular Turkey and campaigned tirelessly for women's right to vote. Throughout her marriage, Latife stood beside her husband and acted as his interpreter, promoter and diplomatic aide. She even twice risked her own life to save his. However, after only two years of marriage, Ataturk divorced Latife and she soon disappeared from public life. She was shunned, blamed for the failure of the marriage and portrayed as a sharp-tongued, quarrelsome woman who had strained Ataturk's nerves. Latife spent the rest of her life in seclusion. In the first biography to be written on Latife Hanym, Ypek Calyplar recounts the life of an exceptional and courageous woman, well ahead of her time, who lived through a remarkable period in Turkish history.

The New Sultan Erdogan and the Crisis of Modern Turkey【電子書籍】[ Soner Cagaptay ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The New Sultan Erdogan and the Crisis of Modern Turkey【電子書籍】[ Soner Cagaptay ]

In a world of rising tensions between Russia and the United States, the Middle East and Europe, Sunnis and Shiites, Islamism and liberalism, Turkey is at the epicentre. And at the heart of Turkey is its right-wing populist president, Recep Tayyip Erdo?an. Since 2002, Erdo?an has consolidated his hold on domestic politics while using military and diplomatic means to solidify Turkey as a regional power. His crackdown has been brutal and consistent - scores of journalists arrested, academics officially banned from leaving the country, university deans fired and many of the highest-ranking military officers arrested. In some senses, the nefarious and failed 2016 coup has given Erdo?an the licence to make good on his repeated promise to bring order and stability under a 'strongman'. Here, leading Turkish expert Soner Cagaptay will look at Erdo?an's roots in Turkish history, what he believes in and how he has cemented his rule, as well as what this means for the world. The book will also unpick the 'threats' Erdogan has worked to combat - from the liberal Turks to the Gulen movement, from coup plotters to Kurdish nationalists - all of which have culminated in the crisis of modern Turkey.

GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY The Empire of Turkey, through which I propose to conduct you, stretches over portions of Europe and Asiaーthe slender thread of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles being the division between the two continents. A rapid current rushes through these channels, but in some places they are so narrow that you can shout across from Europe to Asia, and it is no uncommon thing to hear the dogs barking from the other side. Turkey in Europe spreads northwards from these points up to Bulgaria, and consists of a long strip of country extending from the Black Sea to the Adriatic. Turkey in Asia is more extensive, and stretches from the Black Sea to the Persian Gulf. Persia lies to its east, and the Red Sea and blue Mediterranean to its west. Turkey holds sway over some of earth's fairest lands, the homes of its most ancient civilizations and lands familiar to us through Holy Writ and profane history, and the sources of Jewish, Christian, Moslem, and other beliefs

From the Sultan to Atat?rk Turkey【電子書籍】[ Andrew Mango ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】From the Sultan to Atat?rk Turkey【電子書籍】[ Andrew Mango ]

World War I sounded the death knell of empires. The forces of disintegration affected several empires simultaneously. To that extent they were impersonal. But prudent statesmen could delay the death of empires, rulers such as Emperor Franz Josef II of Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Sultan Abd?lhamid II. Adventurous rulers - Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and Enver Pasha in the Ottoman Empire - hastened it. Enver's decision to enter the war on the side of Germany destroyed the Ottoman state. It may have been doomed in any case, but he was the agent of its doom. The last Sultan Mehmet VI Vahdettin thought he could salvage the Ottoman state in something like its old form. But Vahdettin and his ministers could not succeed because the victorious Allies had decided on the final partition of the Ottoman state. The chief proponent of partition was Lloyd George, heir to the Turcophobe tradition of British liberals, who fell under the spell of the Greek irredentist politician Venizelos. With these two in the lead, the Allies sought to impose partition on the Sultan's state. When the Sultan sent his emissaries to the Paris peace conference they could not win a reprieve. The Treaty of S?vres which the Sultan's government signed put an end to Ottoman independence. The Treaty of S?vres was not ratified. Turkish nationalists, with military officers in the lead, defied the Allies, who promptly broke ranks, each one trying to win concessions for himself at the expense of the others. Mustafa Kemal emerged as the leader of the military resistance. Diplomacy allowed Mustafa Kemal to isolate his people's enemies: Greek and Armenian irredentists. Having done so, he defeated them by force of arms. In effect, the defeat of the Ottoman empire in the First World War was followed by the Turks' victory in two separate wars: a brief military campaign against the Armenians and a long one against the Greeks. Lausanne - where General Ismet succeeded in securing peace on Turkey's terms - was the founding charter of the modern Turkish nation state. But more than that it showed that empires could no longer rule peoples against their wishes. This need not be disastrous: Mustafa Kemal demonstrated that the interests of developed countries were compatible with those of developing ones. He fought the West in order to become like it. Where his domestic critics wanted to go on defying the West, Mustafa Kemal saw that his country could fare best in cooperation with the West.

Talaat Pasha Father of Modern Turkey, Architect of Genocide【電子書籍】[ Hans-Lukas Kieser ]

The first English-language biography of the de facto ruler of the late Ottoman Empire and architect of the Armenian Genocide

Talaat Pasha (1874?1921) led the triumvirate that ruled the late Ottoman Empire during World War I and is arguably the father of modern Turkey. He was also the architect of the Armenian Genocide, which would result in the systematic extermination of more than a million people, and which set the stage for a century that would witness atrocities on a scale never imagined. Here is the first biography in English of the revolutionary figure who not only prepared the way for Atat?rk and the founding of the republic in 1923, but who shaped the modern world as well.

In this explosive book, Hans-Lukas Kieser provides a mesmerizing portrait of a man who maintained power through a potent blend of the new Turkish ethno-nationalism, the political Islam of former Sultan Abdulhamid II, and a readiness to employ radical "solutions" and violence. From Talaat's role in the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 to his exile from Turkey and assassination--a sensation in Weimar GermanyーKieser restores the Ottoman drama to the heart of world events. He shows how Talaat wielded far more power than previously realized, making him the de facto ruler of the empire. He brings wartime Istanbul vividly to life as a thriving diplomatic hub, and reveals how Talaat's cataclysmic actions would reverberate across the twentieth century.

In this major work of scholarship, Kieser tells the story of the brilliant and merciless politician who stood at the twilight of empire and the dawn of the age of genocide.
