【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Incidents of Travel in Greece, Turkey, Russia, and Poland (Complete)【電子書籍】[ John Lloyd Stephens ]

On the evening of the ーー February, 1835, by a bright starlight, after a short ramble among the Ionian Islands, I sailed from Zante in a beautiful cutter of about forty tons for Padras. My companions were Doctor W., an old and valued friend from New-York, who was going to Greece merely to visit the Episcopal missionary school at Athens, and a young Scotchman, who had travelled with me through Italy, and was going farther, like myself, he knew not exactly why. There was hardly a breath of air when we left the harbour, but a breath was enough to fill our little sail. The wind, though of the gentlest, was fair; and as we crawled from under the lee of the island, in a short time it became a fine sailing breeze. We sat on the deck till a late hour, and turned in with every prospect of being at Padras in the morning. Before daylight, however, the wind chopped about, and set in dead ahead, and when I went on deck in the morning it was blowing a hurricane. We had passed the point of Padras; the wind was driving down the Gulf of Corinth as if old ?olus had determined on thwarting our purpose; and our little cutter, dancing like a gull upon the angry waters, was driven into the harbour of Missilonghi. The town was full in sight, but at such a distance, and the waves were running so high, that we could not reach it with our small boat. A long flat extends several miles into the sea, making the harbour completely inaccessible except to small Greek caiques built expressly for such navigation. We remained on board all day; and the next morning, the gale still continuing, made signals to a fishing boat to come off and take us ashore. In a short time she came alongside; we bade farewell to our captainーan Italian and a noble fellow, cradled, and, as he said, born to die on the Adriaticーand in a few minutes struck the soil of fallen but immortal Greece. Our manner of striking it, however, was not such as to call forth any of the warm emotions struggling in the breast of the scholar, for we were literally stuck in the mud. We were yet four or five miles from the shore, and the water was so low that the fishing-boat, with the additional weight of four men and luggage, could not swim clear. Our boatmen were two long, sinewy Greeks, with the red tarbouch, embroidered jacket, sash, and large trousers, and with their long poles set us through the water with prodigious force; but, as soon as the boat struck, they jumped out, and, putting their brawny shoulders under her sides, heaved her through into better water, and then resumed their poles. In this way they propelled her two or three miles, working alternately with their poles and shoulders, until they got her into a channel, when they hoisted the sail, laid directly for the harbour, and drove upon the beach with canvass all flying.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Pan Michael: An Historical Novel of Poland, the Ukraine, and Turkey【電子書籍】[ Henryk Sienkiewicz ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Pan Michael: An Historical Novel of Poland, the Ukraine, and Turkey【電子書籍】[ Henryk Sienkiewicz ]

After the close of the Hungarian war, when the marriage of Pan Andrei Kmita and Panna Aleksandra Billevich was celebrated, a cavalier, equally meritorious and famous in the Commonwealth, Pan Michael Volodyovski, colonel of the Lauda squadron, was to enter the bonds of marriage with Panna Anna Borzobogati Krasienski. But notable hindrances rose, which delayed and put back the affair. The lady was a foster-daughter of Princess Griselda Vishnyevetski, without whose permission Panna Anna would in no wise consent to the wedding. Pan Michael was forced therefore to leave his affianced in Vodokty, by reason of the troubled times, and go alone to Zamost for the consent and the blessing of the princess. But a favoring star did not guide him: he did not find the princess in Zamost; she had gone to the imperial court in Vienna for the education of her son. The persistent knight followed her even to Vienna, though that took much time. When he had arranged the affair there successfully, he turned homeward in confident hope. He found troubled times at home: the army was forming a confederacy; in the Ukraine uprisings continued; at the eastern boundary the conflagration had not ceased. New forces were assembled to defend the frontiers even in some fashion. Before Pan Michael had reached Warsaw, he received a commission issued by the voevoda of Rus. Thinking that the country should be preferred at all times to private affairs, he relinquished his plan of immediate marriage and moved to the Ukraine. He campaigned in those regions some years, living in battles, in unspeakable hardships and labor, having barely a chance on occasions to send letters to the expectant lady. Next he was envoy to the Crimea; then came the unfortunate civil war with Pan Lyubomirski, in which Volodyovski fought on the side of the king against that traitor and infamous man; then he went to the Ukraine a second time under Sobieski. From these achievements the glory of his name increased in such manner that he was considered on all sides as the first soldier of the Commonwealth, but the years were passing for him in anxiety, sighs, and yearning. At last 1668 came, when he was sent at command of the castellan to rest; at the beginning of the year he went for the cherished lady, and taking her from Vodokty, they set out for Cracow. They were journeying to Cracow, because Princess Griselda, who had returned from the dominions of the emperor, invited Pan Michael to have the marriage at that place, and offered herself to be mother to the bride. The Kmitas remained at home, not thinking to receive early news from Pan Michael, and altogether intent on a new guest that was coming to Vodokty. Providence had till that time withheld from them children; now a change was impending, happy and in accordance with their wishes. That year was surpassingly fruitful. Grain had given such a bountiful yield that the barns could not hold it, and the whole land, in the length and the breadth of it, was covered with stacks. In neighborhoods ravaged by war the young pine groves had grown in one spring more than in two years at other times. There was abundance of game and of mushrooms in the forests, as if the unusual fruitfulness of the earth had been extended to all things that lived on it. Hence the friends of Pan Michael drew happy omens for his marriage also, but the fates ordained otherwise.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

If you enjoy a challenge, if you like being humbled, if getting outdone regularly by a bird that has a brain the size of a marble appeals to you, then turkey hunting might just be for you! Seriously, I have been so blessed by God to live in an area with a good turkey population and the opportunity to pursue them! I often refer to the wild turkey as the monarch of the woods. If you have had the opportunity to watch him do his thing in the woods you know what I mean.

I've heard the claim that a turkey can see you blink your eye from twenty yards away. I swear I've had them do it. Believe me when I say they are a formidable adversary!

Inside are several of my favorite turkey stories. I hope you enjoy them. I want to thank my turkey hunting mentors Blake Kelley and Phillip Blake for facilitating my addiction.I love you both.

Mostly I thank God above. I bowed over every turkey I killed and thanked the Lord for letting me have the experience. By the time this is in print, I will likely be with the Lord due to cancer. There had not been any cancer in my family prior to mine. That just lets us know that tomorrow isn't guaranteed. There is a statistic out that says one out of one people dies. Of course, Michael’s Turkey stories are fairly unique to him, but somewhat similar things may happen to you. There, in gritty Piraeus, he adopts terrorismーor more precisely, terrorists adopt him. The ambitious operation his new comrades are plotting will, he’s informed, decimate the power elite and nspire revolution around the globe. His thousand-mile odyssey from war-torn Mosul to strife-ridden Athens and part way back tests his metal, his wits, and his abiding faith.

You’ll find memorable characters, tense action, straight and gay romance, ideological and other altercations, and ingenious improvisations in both the real and virtual worlds in this gripping, one-of-a-kind thriller. All that Mahmoud experiences edits his articles of faith and just might edit some of yours.

About the Author

A trenchant observer of current events, social movements, abuses of technology, and the deceits of elites, creative writer and columnist Geoffrey Dutton became a novelist after witnessing politicians and pundits reacting to hordes of hapless refugees streaming into Europe with fear and loathing. Their callous calls to bar and cage innocent victims of Western interventions was the last straw for him. ""All right, then,"" he vowed,"" I’ll give you an 'Islamic extremist' who you say hates democracy and wants to destroy your way of life and make you weep for him."" Thus was born this timely, cinema-verit? inside-out page-turner that transports you into a conspiracy of “evildoers” and makes you root for them.

Learn more about Turkey Shoot at perfidy.press. The dialogue sparkles and the prose thrusts you on an adventure that twists and turns. The bittersweet ending will surprise you." -- Dr. Arnold Kamis, founder, Lexington Writer’s Group

Book Review 3:

"If invaders destroyed your home, your family, your peopleーwhat would you do? Where would you go, how would you get there, what could you take with you, how could you reach out to friends and family or make money? Whom would you trust, or even love? Enough such trauma might drive you to terrorism, might it not? Why not stake out this cell of fed-up international radicals and find out? What they’re planning will kill you." -- Dr. A. Bengola, Professor of English, Newark State Teachers College

Book Review 4:

"Geoffrey Dutton wraps the reader into a first-person scenario, tracking an outsider as he negotiates a maze of twisty streets and untested persons who claim to be allies.
'Captivating. Kent effortlessly weaves travels that are close to his heart into a bigger story of Turkey’s past and present' ? Mishal Husain
'A rich, spellbinding book: dense with people, stories, history, colour, lived experience . . . The book is alive on every page' ? Neel Mukherjee, Booker Prize-shortlisted author of The Lives of Others

The Endless Country takes a journey through Turkey’s past ? the nation the author’s father left decades ago and he returns to as a young man.

It is not about Erdogan or Atat?rk, the two towering Presidents who have book-ended that history, and at times have appeared impossible to escape. Instead Sami Kent’s book goes deep beyond them, revealing a history as rich, layered and absurd as his family’s favourite dessert, k?nefe: a shredded wheat pastry with a core of melted cheese, a topping of pistachios, and a drowning of syrup.

From tiny weightlifters to the world’s biggest prison, from a failed socialist commune to a wildly successful orchid ice cream, the book is a tribute to the sheer bewildering diversity of Turkey’s past: its people, their ideas and their struggles.

'This is surely how history should be told ? human, fun, alive' ? The Telegraph
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

House of Daughters A Romance Set in 1920S Ottoman Turkey Inspired by Pride and Prejudice【電子書籍】[ Engin Inel Holmstrom ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】House of Daughters A Romance Set in 1920S Ottoman Turkey Inspired by Pride and Prejudice【電子書籍】[ Engin Inel Holmstrom ]

Engin Inel Holmstroms second novel, House of Daughters, is a delightful adaptation of Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice to 1920s Turkey. The Ottoman Empire is dying. Istanbul is occupied by the British. But all Emin Efendi can think of is marrying off his five daughters to secure their places and fortunes.
While working as a nurse, Emin Efendis favorite daughter Perihan meets a dashing, wounded Turkish officer, Major Murat. Theyre attracted to each other, but Murats pride in his familys social status prejudices their blossoming love.
In this retelling, Jane Austens beloved characters are taken out of the drawing room and their tale is told within the historical context of the Turkish fight for independence, birth of its new nation, and greater opportunities for women. House of Daughters should appeal to Austens readers as well as all those who enjoy reading novels with strong female characters.

HOUSE OF DAUGHTERS is a thrilling blend of adventure, romance, and the personal courage of men and women, during the birth of the Turkish Republic of the 1920s. Exploring the British and Turkish conflict in Anatolia and written like a romantic fable with a dark side, the novel tells of high romance, honor, betrayal, and family saga, in a beautiful mash-up of classic and modern literature. Taking its framing story from Jane Austens PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, Engin Inel Holmstrom has given Austens tale a modern twist with scenes of soccer matches, gun-running, cross-cultural secrets, and nationalistic fervor in a story of new beginnings, old traditions, and the rise of the new Turkish state. A sweet delight of hushed promises undermined by the demands of family, friends, country and gender, HOUSE OF DAUGHTERS is a hybrid story drawn through the eighteenth and twentieth centuries best understood in the twenty-first century. Following her debut novel LOVESWEPT, Holmstroms second novel uncovers a vital history of European struggle for identity, unity, and self-determination. A proud story of unchanging human desire, conflict, and fresh hope.
Matt Fullerty, Author of THE KNIGHT OF NEW ORLEANS and
THE MURDERESS AND THE HANGMAN
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

As I promised you, at parting, to give you a full Account of my Journey to Constantinople, so, I shall now make good my Word; and I hope, with Advantage too. For, I shall also acquaint you with my Adventures in my Travel to Amasia, as well as That to Constantinople, the former being less used, and consequently far less known, than the latter. My Design herein, is, to allow you a Part of the Solace, of what happened pleasurable to me; for so the ancient Friendship betwixt us obliges me, to appropriate no Joy to myself, without communicating the same to you; but, as for what happened incommodious to me, (as, in so long and tedious a Journey, some Things must needs do) those I take to my self; neither would I have you concerned in them at all; for, the Danger being now past, the more grievous they were to suffer, the more pleasant will they be, even to myself, to remember and commit to Writing. Upon the Receipt of his Letter, Ferdinand was at a stand; he did not fully believe, nor yet altogether disbelieve him; he was inclined to suspect, that the Memory of his former Sufferings, and the Fear of future ones, did deter him from that Employment, rather than the Danger of his Disease; and yet, on the other side, he did not think it creditable for himself to employ a Man that had so well deserved of him and of the Commonwealth, in any Service against his Will. But the Death ofMalvezius, which followed a few Months after, did sufficiently convince him, that his Disease was not pretended, to decline the Employment, but was really a Mortal one. Upon this, I was substituted in the Place of Malvezius: But, being unexperienced (as I said before) in the Affairs and Manners of the Turks, King Ferdinand thought it adviseable for me to bestow a Visit upon Malvezius in his Sickness, that so, by his Directions and Advice, I might be better cautioned and armed against any Impositions of the captious Turks. Two Days I staid with him, which was as much as the straitness of my Time would permit; and I husbanded them so well, as to be informed by him, what I was to act, and what to avoid, in my daily Convention with the Turks. Whereupon, I posted back to Vienna, and began, with great Application and Diligence, to prepare Necessaries for my Journey. But such was the Flush of Business, and so little the Time allowed to dispatch it, that, when the Day fixt for my Departure came, though the King did earnestly press me forward, and I had been extremely Busy all the Day in equipping myself, and in causing Bag and Baggage to be pack’d up, even from the fourth Watch; yet it was the first Watch of the following Night, before I could be quite ready; but then the Gates of Vienna, which at that time of Night us’d always to be shut, were opened on purpose for me. The Emperor went abroad a Hunting that Day, but he told his Followers, That he did not doubt but that I would be upon my Way, before he returned from his Sport in the Evening, and it fell out accordingly; yet so, that I was but just gone before he came Home.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Who is who in Turkey【電子書籍】[ Oguz Hakan G?kt?rk ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Who is who in Turkey【電子書籍】[ Oguz Hakan G?kt?rk ]

"This country has witnessed to the high presence and manifestation of Turkish identity despite underestimation of its power, and underappreciation of its values by others. This country has been the cradle of the Turk for more than 7 thousand years. Sometimes this cradle has been shaken by potent winds and let the child get washed up by the rain. Initially this child seemed to get frightened of thunderstorms, hurricanes and typoons. However, the child got used to imtemperance of the nature, and became the son of it by the time. After that, Turk was everything the sun, wind, rain and thunderstorm. Yes, this is what the Turk exactly is, he is thunderstorm that shakes the world, and he is the sun that enlightens the world."
ATATURK
Turks have played a very critical role very in the formation of the world history and founded a great number of states whose lands reached from Asia to Europe, from Caucasus to North Africa. As it is strikingly stated in an eminent Turkish adage ¨Turks do not have any friends or allies other than other Turks?, Turkish Nation in its 4000 years old history has been betrayed numerous times by the outsiders as well as insiders.
In the early Turkish history, charming Chinese princesses married to Turkish khans meddled into the domestic politics and destabilized the country, after Turks expanded towards the West, Roman Empire, and eventually settled in the Anatolian Peninsula, similar political games started to be set up by the Byzantine to weaken the brotherhood bonds among the Turkish sultans and bring them to blows over the throne.
Incorrigible enemies of Turks were never willing to cease their plots and intensified their actions towards taking the advantage of existing cleavages that exist in modern Turkish society such as radical leftists vs. radical rightists, Turkish Chauvinists vs. Kurdish Chauvinists, Alleviates vs. Sunnis, Seculars vs. Conservatives.
Ill-intentioned centers of power, thanks to their strategic plans and programs that they have meticulously pursued over the centuries, could infiltrate into the leadership mechanisms of all these seemingly opposing political and social groups and planted the seeds of hatred and antagonism. In actuality, neither those infiltrated into the leadership of Alleviates or the Leftist movements, nor those infiltrated into the leadership of Sunni and Rightist movements were the genuine representatives or advocates of their cause. When a closer scrutiny is paid to family background of those people who have played pivotal roles in the eruption and sustenance of the polarization in Turkey, differences between the real personality features they have and the personality features that they want the public to think they have get noticed. This hypocrisy is more serious and severe and cannot be normalized by simply referring to the elusive structure of politics.
Since, none of the ways worked out as they had wished; they had to apply to more complicated strategies that predicate upon a deep sociological analysis of Turkish society. After understanding the fact that, it was not possible to reach some objectives through direct confrontation with the religious majority and wanted to conquer the fortress from inside. To that end, they would exploit the religious sensibility of the masses as well as their aspiration for a religious leader. The plan has been bloomed and blossomed by the rise of ¨Political Islam? in Turkish political system. They artfully enlarged the area of religious freedoms to persuade the conservative masses about their sincerity and divert their attention from what they were actually doing to what they seemed to have been doing. After guaranteeing people’s allegiance and unconditional support, they started putting their detrimental Anti-Turkish plans into practice by which they were hoping to endanger and weaken the integrity and unity of Turkish nation.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
