If you have ever thought about becoming a Chef, Raymond's account of his career is a must read. Watching cooking shows and competitions along with making great meals at home has little resemblance to the hard life of being a Chef. Raymond's insider view of the realities and the journey a young cook must take to become a Chef are honest, insightful, descriptive and above all motivating. Until now there was little information to provide a real view into the business for aspiring cooks, this book should be required reading for anyone considering Culinary schools. Cooking is a vehicle for expressing love for others by delighting their pallet, lifting their mood, or soothing their pains. It is this passion that drives a Chef to endure the challenges that Raymond aptly describes. Raymond delivers a dose of reality, that every young culinarian should devour and will leave restaurant patrons a bit more thankful and in awe of the team behind their next great meal.

I grew up in the Highlands of Scotland and I became a musician while still at School. Then I made my first musical instrument at the age of just 13 years, an Appalachian Dulcimer. I joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 18. I served for 9 years. I worked at many of our secret establishments. Even during my military career, I continued to play in bands, as well as to write music.

When time would allow, I made guitars for myself, although most of these ended up in my friends hands rather than mine.

With the bands that I played in, I have been fortunate enough to have recorded 32 albums. Most of these albums were with my Irish Rebel Band, aptly named ‘1916’.

I later formed my own company making bespoke guitars (Gordon Guitars UK)

The pressure of running so many ventures simultaneously eventually took its toll and a series of heart attacks followed. So I looked for a new and more sedate way to direct my creative juices and writing thrillers fitted that bill perfectly.

This will be my fifth thriller and like the other books, this novel is a mixture of both fact and fiction. I prefer to call this genre ‘Faction’. So any similarity to people in real life, is purely coincidental. Names and places may have been changed to protect the innocent.

If God is too indifferent, or too non-existent to take care of His creation, then clearly it's up to Me.'
Morgen Tanjenz is a lawyer with an overactive sense of justice. His mission in life is to reward the virtuous, punish the ignorant and avenge those who won't avenge themselves. His favourite pastime is 'life sculpture' - anonymously intervening in the lives of strangers to change their destiny in ways he thinks they deserve.
But Morgen isn't the only one changing lives in the city. A serial killer is on the prowl and taunting the police in letters to the local rag. But, as the body count rises, Detective Sergeant Blacksnake Fowler can hardly focus on the job with so many distractions: his boss hates him, his deputy is trying to undermine him and the woman he loves is having an affair.
In the cicada-throbbing heat of a Sydney summer, the threads of a strange story become entangled in a wild conclusion no one will see coming.

'a ripsnorter of a ride through the dark heart of the burbs... may just be Australia's answer to American Psycho.' Kirsten Krauth, just_a_girl

'Sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing, and always compelling... with a super-original premise and a one-of-a-kind protagonist'. Tony Wilson, Making News

'A disturbingly good read. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】White-Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War【電子書籍】[ Herman Melville ]

Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American sailor and writer, mostly known for the famous classical novel 'Moby-Dick, or The Whale'. Herman Melville's nautical experience formed his writing style and the way he saw reality. 'Moby-Dick' touches upon the theme of society and the conflict between the society and an individual, this work depicts the triumph of irrationality over human lives. Nevertheless, the novel wasn't appreciated by critics during the author's life. Herman Melville also was a prolific short-story writer and a poet. In 1843, after three years of voyaging in the South Seas, Melville signed up as an ordinary seaman on the man of war United States, and headed for home. What he observed on his way home formed the basis of White Jacket. The World in a Man of War's subtitle points to its broad theme: autocratic, male regime aboard the Neversink is perhaps no more than a microcosm of pre-Civil War America. But under his scandalized liberalism, his desire to expose and to reform a barbaric system which reflects badlyon the Declaration of Independence, runs an unspoken connection. The treatment meted out to the white men on the man-of-war is the same as that experienced by black slaves in every state. With hindsight, Melville's novel is double-edged and will be useful for everyone to make an acquaintance.

Exploring Morality and Authority on the High Seas【電子書籍】[ Herman Melville ]

In "White-Jacket," Herman Melville offers a profound exploration of maritime life through the eyes of a sailor aboard a U.S. Navy ship. The novel is a masterful blend of narrative, eloquent prose, and social commentary, capturing the struggles and camaraderie among seamen while critically examining the complexities of naval authority and morality. Written in 1850, it stands as both an adventurous sea tale and a scathing critique of institutional hierarchy, beautifully juxtaposed against Melville's themes of freedom and confinement. The vivid descriptions and introspective reflections serve to immerse readers in the harsh realities of naval discipline and the author's philosophical musings on the nature of humanity. Herman Melville, an accomplished author of the American Renaissance, drew upon his own experiences at sea, including whaling voyages, to craft this narrative. His earlier works, such as "Typee" and "Omoo," showcased his fascination with life in the Pacific, but it is in "White-Jacket" that he delves deeper into the moral implications of authority and experience. This personal connection to maritime life, along with his broader philosophical inquiries, informed the narrative decisions in this novel. "White-Jacket" is an essential read for those interested in nautical literature, American history, or the moral dilemmas faced in structured societies. Melville's intricate prose and poignant themes compel readers to question societal norms and the essence of freedom. This novel is not merely a story of life at sea; it is a reflection on the human condition, making it a vital addition to any literary collection. In this enriched edition, we have carefully created added value for your reading experience: - A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes. - The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists. - A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing. - An Author Biography reveals milestones in the author's life, illuminating the personal insights behind the text. - A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings. - Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life. - Handーpicked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance. - Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.

Long before penning Moby-Dick, which many regard as the quintessential American novel, author Herman Melville was captivated by life on the open sea. White Jacket adopts a different perspective, focusing on the brutal treatment that many sailors received at the hands of their superiors. In particular, it has been noted that this novel proved to be instrumental in banning the practice of flogging in several branches of the U.S. military.

Puller Hobbs, war weary veteran, wants little more than to truly be the man that his wife and daughters assume him to be. But he senses that a piece is missing. Hoping to be an artist and possessing the technical skills, Puller is nonetheless void of vision. He works as a carpenter, an occupation with little ambivalence and, safely, little need for introspection. But one day at work, a violent and fatal accident impels in him a formidable artistic insight that he urgently needs to express. Standing between him and fulfillment, however, is his Vietnam past.
Living in rural East Texas, caretakers of an antebellum plantation, the Hobbs family are surrounded by and caught up in a century and a half of racial inequities that Puller, having fought beside men of all colors, cannot condone. A close friendship with their black neighbors becomes a foreground for his first real work of art. But through this work, a voice ? a persona ? from the past reaches out and, frightened, Puller confronts a psychological trauma that had never healed. The scar had merely been plastered over, in the fashion of many combat veterans, when Puller had patched together his post-war sanity. Now he must face a terrible possibility: an essential part of himself may be irrevocably lost.
His role as father and husband both eases and complicates Puller's quest. One day he finds a tangible war memento, a child's embroidered jacket bearing the words: Chu Lai, Vietnam. The jacket is a talisman of a traumatic event that forced a sundering, a division, of his very psyche. It was the start of what he remembers fearfully as his madness, which he feels creeping up around him again. When Kelly, his six-year-old daughter, refuses to wear the jacket, Puller's disappointment leads him to wonder just what sort of imagery the child bears of her father's role in the war. What exactly did he do?
The journey into the darkness of his own past is his only route into a hopeful future. Without the love of family and friends, he fears he will be hopelessly lost. The Chu Lai Jacket is a story of the sort of renewal that every combat veteran deserves to find.
