In Dust Jacket, Connor MacLean is a rare book dealer, who specializes in military and historical manuscripts. His father Grant is a Vietnam veteran and Grandfather Ian served during WWII, while Connor himself served with distinction in Operation Desert Storm. Yet Connor is not the typical disturbed vet. He is a successful businessman, respected by his peers and considered an expert in his field.

MacLean attends an estate sale in an affluent Chicago suburb, where he intends to purchase a number of one-of-a-kind items concerning Erwin Rommel, the famed Desert Fox. This sets the stage for a hidden map, possibly revealing the location of a fabulous gold horde, hidden from the Nazis at the opening of WWII. The map exists and in several people’s minds, it’s certainly worth killing for. Travel across the United States to a former POW camp for Axis prisoners, where clues are hidden, to a whitewater chase on the Wolf River in Wisconsin.

While Connor MacLean deals with an ex-wife, alcoholic father, eccentric grandfather, jealous rival book dealers and neo-Nazis, led by a former German air ace, you will wonder what can go wrong next. All the action leads to a series of plot twists, unexpected developments and the final confrontation on the resort islands of Greece.

White Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War, usually referred to as White-Jacket, is an 1850 novel by Herman Melville. Based on Melville's experiences as a common seaman aboard the frigate USS United States from 1843 to 1844 and stories that other sailors told him, the novel is severely critical of virtually every aspect of American naval life and thus qualifies as Melville's most politically strident work.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】White Jacket, or The World on a Man-of-War【電子書籍】[ Herman Melville ]

White-Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War is the fifth book by American writer Herman Melville, first published in London in 1850. The book is based on the author's fourteen months' service in the United States Navy, aboard the frigate USS Neversink (actually USS United States). The novel takes its title from the outer garment that the eponymous main character fashions for himself on board ship, with materials at hand, being in need of a coat sufficient for the rounding of Cape Horn. Due to a ship-wide rationing of tar, however, White-Jacket is forever denied his wish to tar the exterior of his coat and thus waterproof it. This causes him to have two near-death experiences, once when he is reclining among the canvases in the main-top and, his jacket blending in with the surrounding material, he is nearly unfurled along with the main sail; and once when, having been pitched overboard while reeving the halyards, he has to cut himself free from the coat in order not to drown.

All my life I have had an awareness of other times and places. I have been aware of other persons in me.ーOh, and trust me, so have you, my reader that is to be. Read back into your childhood, and this sense of awareness I speak of will be remembered as an experience of your childhood. You were then not fixed, not crystallized. You were plastic, a soul in flux, a consciousness and an identity in the process of formingーay, of forming and forgetting.
You have forgotten much, my reader, and yet, as you read these lines, you remember dimly the hazy vistas of other times and places into which your child eyes peered. They seem dreams to you today. Yet, if they were dreams, dreamed then, whence the substance of them? Our dreams are grotesquely compounded of the things we know. The stuff of our sheerest dreams is the stuff of our experience. As a child, a wee child, you dreamed you fell great heights; you dreamed you flew through the air as things of the air fly; you were vexed by crawling spiders and many-legged creatures of the slime; you heard other voices, saw other faces nightmarishly familiar, and gazed upon sunrises and sunsets other than you know now, looking back, you ever looked upon.
Very well. These child glimpses are of other-worldness, of other-lifeness, of things that you had never seen in this particular world of your particular life. Then whence? Other lives? Other worlds? Perhaps, when you have read all that I shall write, you will have received answers to the perplexities I have propounded to you, and that you yourself, ere you came to read me, propounded to yourself.

The Jacket (The Star-Rover) Enriched edition. Spiritual Confinement: A Story of Redemption and Resilience【電子書籍】[ Jack London ]

Spiritual Confinement: A Story of Redemption and Resilience【電子書籍】[ Jack London ]

In Jack London's "The Jacket (The Star-Rover)", readers are immersed in a gripping narrative that intertwines themes of existentialism, individuality, and the struggle for freedom. Structured around the protagonist's intense experiences while incarcerated, the novella employs a vivid, almost poetic prose style that captures the stark realities of prison life alongside transcendent experiences of past lives during natural and spiritual awakenings. This experimental work reflects the literary context of early 20th-century American realism and serves as a precursor to the modern existentialist movement, presenting an innovative exploration of the human psyche in the face of suffering. Jack London, a renowned American author, captivated audiences with his insights into humanity, shaped by his tumultuous upbringing and extensive travels, including a stint as a laborer and journalist. His political activism and fascination with socialism further inform the socio-political critique embedded within "The Jacket", as London seeks to illuminate the plight of the oppressed and marginalized. The raw emotional power and philosophical depth of London's experiences fuel the narrative, reflecting his belief in the indomitable human spirit. I wholeheartedly recommend "The Jacket (The Star-Rover)" to readers who are intrigued by literature that challenges societal norms and delves into the complexities of human existence. London's unique blend of adventure and introspection creates a rich reading experience that invites profound reflection. This book is not just a tale of survival; it's a thoughtful meditation on identity and the enduring quest for liberation. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Operation "Jacket" The Whole Story Of A Secret WWII Parachute Mission By The Man Who Made It Back【電子書籍】[ Marek Celt ]

This is the true story of a Polish WWII courier who survived two secret parachute missions and escaped Gestapo capture multiple times. The six-man commando team of Operation "Jacket" was dropped into Poland before dawn on December 28, 1941, to deliver information and money to the Underground authorities. They flew in under fire, parachuted into a dangerous area, and got into a savage firefight with the Germans almost immediately, losing two men. Second Lieutenant Chciuk and three others got away despite a determined German manhunt, and fulfilled their various assignments in Poland. Chciuk's assignment was to make an assessment of the state of the Polish Underground and report back to HQ. His observations include two unforgettable trips to the Warsaw Ghetto. There followed an arduous and complicated plan for Chciuk to return to HQ in London "by any means possible," which included several clandestine border crossings and numerous assumed identities, several visits to Gestapo headquarters in Zagreb, and time spent in a Spanish concentration camp. He finally got back to England in June of 1943, filed his report, and was awarded the Virtuti Militari, Poland's highest military decoration. This is his story.

If God is too indifferent, or too non-existent to take care of His creation, then clearly it's up to Me.'
Morgen Tanjenz is a lawyer with an overactive sense of justice. His mission in life is to reward the virtuous, punish the ignorant and avenge those who won't avenge themselves. His favourite pastime is 'life sculpture' - anonymously intervening in the lives of strangers to change their destiny in ways he thinks they deserve.
But Morgen isn't the only one changing lives in the city. A serial killer is on the prowl and taunting the police in letters to the local rag. But, as the body count rises, Detective Sergeant Blacksnake Fowler can hardly focus on the job with so many distractions: his boss hates him, his deputy is trying to undermine him and the woman he loves is having an affair.
In the cicada-throbbing heat of a Sydney summer, the threads of a strange story become entangled in a wild conclusion no one will see coming.

'a ripsnorter of a ride through the dark heart of the burbs... may just be Australia's answer to American Psycho.' Kirsten Krauth, just_a_girl

'Sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing, and always compelling... with a super-original premise and a one-of-a-kind protagonist'. Tony Wilson, Making News

'A disturbingly good read.
