Falling in love was never part of the mission.

Eric King didn’t volunteer for Alpha Squad. As a bear shifter, he prefers to keep his head down and let others handle the politics of “shifters going public.” But when his clan demands representation in the government’s new joint taskforce, he gets enlisted anyway.

Major Janine Williams didn’t ask for this assignment either. Leading a team of unpredictable shifters and wary human soldiers? It feels like a punishment, not a promotion. Especially when one of her new recruits is the frustratingly attractive man she met by chance on her way to base.

Neither of them expected their spark to follow them to boot camp. And now, with strict military rules, mounting pressure, and loyalties divided between species, the line between duty and fated love is about to be tested.

Alpha Squad: Boot Camp kicks off the steamy paranormal romance series featuring fated mates, military tension, and shifters trying to find their place in a world that’s only just discovering them. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Adventures of an Aide-de-Camp: A Campaign in Calabria (Complete)【電子書籍】[ James Grant ]

On the evening of the last day of June 1806, the transports which had brought our troops from Sicily anchored off the Italian coast, in the Bay of St. Eufemio, a little to the southward of a town of that name. The British forces consisted of H. M. 27th, 58th, 78th, and 81st Regiments of the Line, the Provisional Light Infantry and Grenadier Battalions, the Corsican Rangers, Royal Sicilian Volunteers, and the Regiment of Sir Louis de Watteville, &c., the whole being commanded by Major-General Sir John Stuart, to whose personal staff I had the honour to be attached. This small body of troops, which mustered in all only 4,795 rank and file, was destined by our ministry to support the Neapolitans, who in many places had taken up arms against the usurper, Joseph Buonaparte, and to assist in expelling from Italy the soldiers of his brother. Ferdinand, King of Naples, after being an abject vassal of Napoleon, had allowed a body of British and Russian soldiers to land on his territories without resistance. This expedition failed; he was deserted by the celebrated Cardinal Ruffo, who became a Buonapartist; and as the French emperor wanted a crown for his brother Joseph, he proclaimed that "the Neapolitan dynasty had ceased to reign"ーthat the race of Parma were no longer kings in Lower Italyーand in January 1806 his legions crossed the frontiers. The "lazzaroni king" fled instantly to Palermo; his spirited queen, Carolina (sister of the unfortunate Marie Antoinette), soon followed him; and the usurper, Joseph, after meeting with little or no resistance, was, in February, crowned king of Naples and Sicily, in the church of Sancto Januario, where Cardinal Ruffo of Scylla, performed solemn mass on the occasion. All Naples and its territories submitted to him, save the brave mountaineers of the Calabrias, who remained continually in arms, and with whom we were destined to co-operate. When our anchors plunged into the shining sea, it was about the close of a beautiful eveningーthe hour of Ave Mariaーand the lingering light of the Ausonian sun, setting in all his cloudless splendour, shed a crimson glow over the long line of rocky coast, burnishing the bright waves rolling on the sandy beach, and the wooded mountains of Calabria, the abode of the fiercest banditti in the world. The tricolor flaunted over the towers of St. Amanthea, a little town to the northward of the bay, commanded by a castle on a steep rock, well garrisoned by the enemy; and the smoke of their evening gun curled away from the dark and distant bastions, as the last vessel of our armament came to anchor. The whole fleet, swinging round with the strong current which runs through the Strait of Messina, lay one moment with their sterns to the land and the next to the sparkling sea, which pours through between these rock-bound coasts with the speed of a mill-race. Italy lay before us: the land of the fabled Hesperiaーthe country of the "eternal city;" and I thought of her as she was once: of "majestic Rome," in all her power, her glory, and her military supremacy; when nations bowed their heads before her banners, and her eagles spread their wings over half a world. But, alas! we find it difficult to recognise in the effeminate Venetian, the revengeful Neapolitan, or the ferocious Calabrian, the descendants of those matchless soldiers, whose pride, valour, and ambition few since have equalled, and none have yet surpassed. We viewed with the deepest interest that classic shore, which so many of us now beheld for the first time.

I, Sam, am a well behaved boy but my younger troublemaker brother, Kalem, always gets in the way of that. He plays silly pranks and blames it on me. That's how we got punished by mom - we had to spend the entirety of our summer holidays in a camp... so boring and unfair! If I thought that this was bad, what was coming would be monstrous… because when I found out what dangers lurked in the shadows of the camp's woods, I couldn't think of any way to escape it. Would I survive the horrors before it's too late?

As a boy, the author dreamed of wonderful municipal playgrounds, of organizations giving the boys opportunity to camp in the open, of zoological and botanical gardens planned and adapted to the understanding of youth. His busy life as a civil engineer, surveyor, and work in the open gave him no opportunity to develop his dreams, but at the end of a five year tour of the United States and Canada, made over fifty years ago, he drifted into New York City and was shocked beyond expression by the almost total lack of breathing spaces for our boys, in the greatest of American cities. True, it then had Central Park; but fifty years ago Central Park was out among the goats, only to be reached by a long and tiresome horse car journey. This lamentable state of affairs caused the writer so much real pain and concern that he then and there inaugurated a personal crusade for the benefit of the boys, a crusade with the avowed object of winning for them the peoples' interest in the big outdoors. The most difficult part of his task was to convince the men of the swivel chairs that boys' leisure should be spent in the open; that the blue sky is the only proper roof for a normal boy's playground; also that the open spaces are the places where God intended young people to live, work and play. No great crusade, no great movement of any kind is one man's work, nevertheless, every successful movement must have one enthusiast in the front rank, one who knows the trail and comprehensively envisions the objectiveーobjectum quod complexum. Others may and will join him, and occasionally spurt ahead of the leader, like the hare in the fable, but the enthusiast keeps right on just the same. Pray do not understand by this that the writer claims that he alone is responsible for this bloodless revolution. No, no, his propaganda work did however win for him the moral support of the editorial staff of St. Nicholas, Youth's Companion and Harpers. Later he was openly backed and encouraged by such distinguished sportsmen as President Roosevelt, his chief forester Governor Pinchot, and his Chief of Staff Major General Bell. While the stalwart men of the Camp Fire Club of America worked hand and glove with him, all similar organizations failed not in voicing their approval. Furthermore he was always helped by his loyal friends of the daily press. Many famous writers lent their influence, all working consciously or unconsciously to help the great cause of boyhood.

EXTRAIT:

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Diary of Prisoner 17326 A Boy's Life in a Japanese Labor Camp【電子書籍】[ John K. Stutterheim ]

A moving memoir of childhood in Dutch colonial Java, coming of age in wartime, and the trauma of life in WWII Labor Camps run by the Japanese.

As a boy growing up the Dutch island colony of Java, John K. Stutterheim spent hours exploring his exotic surroundings, taking walks with his younger brother and dachshund along winding jungle roads. It was a fairly typical life for a colonial family in the Dutch East Indies, but their colonial idyll ended when the Japanese invaded in 1942, when John was fourteen.

With the surrender of Java, John’s father was taken prisoner. Soon thereafter, John, his younger brother, and his mother were imprisoned. A year later he and his brother were moved to a forced labor camp for boys, where disease, starvation, and the constant threat of imminent death took their toll.

Throughout all of these travails, John kept a secret diary hidden in his mattress. His memories now offer a unique perspective on an often-overlooked episode of World War II. What emerges is a compelling story of a young man caught up in the machinations of a global warーstruggling to survive while caring for his gravely ill brother.

On the third day of being bottled up in the old line-riders’ hut, Tom Darrah looked at the sky and decided reluctantly to chance a run for Arrowhead. The driving easter had stopped sometime during the night and the ensuing calm was profound and brittleーnot the calm following a blown-out blizzard, but rather that sort of a sullen recess auguring worse to come. So he saddled, tied his tarp roll to the cantle thongs and started out. Crossing three lesser ridges, he fell into the flats of the Arrowhead and was around five miles from the cabin when the worst of his fears were realized. The snow began falling again, softly bellying down. A clap of wind rushed into the vacuum of stillness. Inside of half an hour the full tempest was upon him, howling like a thousand mongrel packs...

The Camp Follower recounts the life of the author John Reilly Taylor, who grew up in the aftermath of World War II as the son of a US Army Officer. In his travels, he witnessed the reconstruction effort in post-war Europe, and the US support of pre-war South Vietnam. His father retained his position as a US Army officer after the war, and was assigned several assignments including SHAPE which became NATO. These assignments required that the family relocate to countries all over Europe. John shares his adventures travelling around Europe, as well as later when his father was assigned to Viet Nam. During that period, he travelled throughout Asia by himself in his teenage years. John's experiences through his adolescence were spent in strange environments far from home, lands harrowed by the aftermath of the most horrendous war in history. In his last assignment before retirement, his father became the Comptroller for the US Military assistance group in South Vietnam. This is the background for John Reilly Taylor's youth, in which he chronicles his autobiography, The Camp Follower.

During the Second World War, approximately 71 million people died on all sides of the conflict, entire cities were flattened, their populaces decimated and dispossessed. Taylor grew up in this environment, as the child of a US military officer; he bore witness of the reconstruction efforts in postwar Europe as his father was posted in NATO bases across the continent. He would also see firsthand America's support of the South Vietnamese government before the Southeast Asian region was plunged in war once more. His youth was a pseudo-nomadic one, as he hopped from city to city, continent to continent. He would continue this pattern in his adulthood, becoming a Comptroller for the US military assistance group in South Vietnam. It would be no exaggeration to say that his life was one of adventure, a firsthand account of exotic locales from a seasoned traveler who began journeying at an early age. Taylor was able to travel throughout Asia by himself in his teens, in a time before backpacking became fashionable, before the age of satellite phones, GPS and the internet.

The Camp Follower is a sophisticated book that recounts the experience of a traveler, the sights of the European reconstruction, and the affairs of a military family sent overseas due to a father's duty to his nation. Those seeking not only to venture into another place, but also another time, will find Taylor's true story to be an engaging reading experience full of insights into issues that would shape the modern world.

Digby, a fox-man thief for the Freelance Adventurers Guild of Tamalaria has been putting off the quest to steal the ‘Last Shield,’ for months, claiming he simply can’t find the right companions for his party. When Biff, a brain-challenged barbarian, wanders into the guildhall, the guildmaster decides it’s time for Digby to do the job… taking with him the guildmaster’s other trouble cases… a female mage with body image issues and a sulky dwarf-priest who was deserted by his congregation and speaks primarily in quotations from his holy scripture. It’s an unlikely group… made more so because each is busy keeping secrets from the others. Still, they’ve all signed the contract and it’s up to them to track down the Last Shield and return it to the lawful owner… or perhaps the highest bidder.
The four adventurers set off across the dangerous lands of Tamalaria with only vague clues to the shield’s location. Shared adventures as they confront bandits, renegades greenskins, and assorted monsters gives them a degree of confidence in the skills each brings to the battle (in the case of Digby, lack of skills), but will the secrets each carries ultimately doom the partnership?

Author Joshua Calkins-Treworgy combines abundant action with intriguing characters to deliver a compelling fantasy. Digby, always glad-handing, always cheerful, always ready to back up his friends, guards a secret past and desperate feelings of inadequacy when it comes to stand-up fighting. Sirock, the dwarf-priest deserted by his flock tries to project the air of a loner, yet finds he needs others. Memnock, the mage-woman, enjoys being treated as an equal companion but finds everyone thinks of her as a mother figure… not exactly what she had in mind. Then there’s Biff, the Barbarian. Calkins-Treworgy takes the classic ‘simple barbarian’ fantasy concept and turns it inside out. Yes, Biff is simple-minded with poor short term memory and a lack of deep understanding of the human mind. Yet he isn’t a classic ‘bash first and ask questions later’ figure. Instead, he’s willing to believe the best of everyone (even ugly-looking greenskins, dangerous monsters and thieving fox-men), only seeming to resort to bashing when forced to by others. Thrown out by his family and mocked by those more clever than he, Biff nevertheless manages to become the story’s central character.

In Strange Camp Fellows, Calkins-Treworgy creates a fresh take on the fantasy quest story, with characters that will stick in your memory, plenty of sword-slashing/magic-tossing adventure, and just enough humor to bring a smile. I was reminded of early Piers Anthony or Robert Aspirin.

According to Wikipedia: "Bret Harte (August 25, 1836[2] May 6, 1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. He was born in Albany, New York. ... He moved to California in 1853, later working there in a number of capacities, including miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist. He spent part of his life in the northern California coast town now known as Arcata, then just a mining camp on Humboldt Bay. His first literary efforts, including poetry and prose, appeared in The Californian, an early literary journal edited by Charles Henry Webb. In 1868 he became editor of The Overland Monthly, another new literary magazine, but this one more in tune with the pioneering spirit of excitement in California. His story, "The Luck of Roaring Camp," appeared in the magazine's second edition, propelling Harte to nationwide fame... Determined to pursue his literary career, in 1871 he and his family traveled back East, to New York and eventually to Boston, where he contracted with the publisher of The Atlantic Monthly for an annual salary of 10,000, "an unprecedented sum at the time." His popularity waned, however, and by the end of 1872 he was without a publishing contract and increasingly desperate. He spent the next few years struggling to publish new work (or republish old), delivering lectures about the gold rush, and even selling an advertising jingle to a soap company. In 1878 Harte was appointed to the position of United States Consul in the town of Krefeld, Germany and then to Glasgow in 1880. In 1885 he settled in London. During the thirty years he spent in Europe, he never abandoned writing, and maintained a prodigious output of stories that retained the freshness of his earlier work. He died in England in 1902 of throat cancer and is buried at Frimley."

Comedian Lee Camp finally turns his popular ranting, raving "Moment of Clarity" webseries into a convenient, hyperlinked e-book . Moment Of Clarity includes 90 of Camp's angrily opinionated, hilariously acerbic humor columns. It also includes 20 never-before-seen photos by professional photographer CS Muncy from the front lines of the Occupy protests. Moment Of Clarity somehow takes the palpable anger that exploded across this country in the form of Occupy Wall Street and turns it into something palatable yet toxically funny.

"Lee Camp is the Che Guevara of comedy. We need more comedians with his kind of fearlessness. It's so rare to find such artful, thoughtful passion in comedy these days... or in life. He's waiting for a generation to catch up with him." ? Paul Provenza, director of "Aristocrats," host of Showtime's "Green Room with Paul Provenza"

"Lee is an amazing writer and a great political thinker. He's the change you and I want to see." ? Janeane Garofalo, actress & comedian

"Since my dad died I've really been concerned about who's going to keep his torch lit. When I saw Lee, I was completely f***ing blown away by the balls he has, and I thought, 'Hey, that's like my dad!' Three other things about Lee remind me of my father. One is that he's a thinking person's comic. Two is that he may just piss you off a little. And three is that he's really f***ing funny." ? Kelly Carlin, radio show host, performer, daughter of George Carlin

"He has found the hole in America's brain where reason has been replaced by Wal-Mart. Lee's rants channel the gunk oozing out. You have to admit, that's why he's so f***ing funny." ? Greg Palast, NY Times bestselling author

"A comedy evangelist." ? the Guardian

"Like Jon Stewart with sharper teeth." ? the Herald

"Had to kick that guy out of the studio." ? “Message to Dave, Message to Dave, do not hunt, do not fish, do not leave camp.? A message will follow in a few days!” When I saw the airplane disappear in the direction of Sudan, my heart sank! This was the airplane that was to have reconnected us to civilization. Instead, I (we) watched in dismay as the sound of the airplane faded and our only connection to (our) civilization flew out of sight. Four young American men stranded in the African wilderness. Isolated from all but native people, whose language we did not understand nor they ours. Sixty miles from the closest settlement, that was not a native African village, no roads, only animal trails and rivers. We had no modern means of communication. There were no telephones, telegraph nor two way radio. It was a year of many surprising events. We would have to hack an airstrip out of the wilderness with only hand tools. It would take us 8 months. Which Way Is Camp? is the story of that adventure.? ? ??

One woman's memories of her deportation to Ravensbr?ck Concentration Camp for Women in July 1941.

On February 4, 1941, Nanda Herbermann, a German Catholic writer and editor, was arrested by the Gestapo in M?nster, Germany. Accused of collaboration with the Catholic movement, Herbermann was deported to Ravensbr?ck Concentration Camp for Women in July 1941 and later released upon direct orders from Heinrich Himmler on March 19, 1943. Although she was instructed by the Gestapo not to reveal information about the camp, Herbermann soon began to record her memories of her experiences. The Blessed Abyss was originally published in German under the imprint of the Allied occupation forces in 1946, and it now appears in English for the first time. Hester Baer and Elizabeth Baer include an extensive introduction that situates Herbermann's work within current debates about gender and the Holocaust and provides historical and biographical information about Herbermann, Ravensbr?ck, and the Third Reich.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Two Slices of Bread Interned in a Japanese concentration camp, evacuated to the Netherlands, then finding peace at last at the bottom of the world【電子書籍】[ Ingrid Coles ]

You will be moved beyond words, even to tearsーa true story of heartaches and triumphs...

As a young child in Holland, Ingrid’s uncle offered her another slice of bread. “Two slices of bread?” she asked, never having been allowed that many before! Her memory jumped to the starvation and cruelty her family had experienced at the hands of extremely cruel captors.

Ingrid Coles was born in Java, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), on 28 November 1942, during the Japanese occupation of WWII. Three months after her birth, she and her family were incarcerated in prisoner-of-war camps. Her father died, aged 43, in a prison camp. Her 6-year-old brother died of starvation and pneumonia en route
to Holland, when the family was evacuated during the Indonesian War of Independence.

Life changed drastically in the Netherlands for Ingrid and her three siblings, who had to learn how to cope with their mother’s post-traumatic stress and their own war-time experiences.

However, Ingrid, now orphaned aged 16 in 1958, had a clear idea of her future calling and emigrated to New Zealand to begin nursing training six months later. This memoir traces Ingrid’s background and growing-up years, revealing the secret of her successful life in her country of adoption; and how she overcame the hurts and hurdles of the pastーeven to how she learned to forgive her oppressors.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Ghost Camp; or, the Avengers Vigilantes of the Australian outback: A tale of justice, revenge, and the law of the land【電子書籍】[ Rolf Boldrewood ]

In "The Ghost Camp; or, the Avengers," Rolf Boldrewood weaves a narrative rich in the themes of revenge, justice, and the supernatural, set against the backdrop of the Australian outback. Through his deft use of descriptive prose and dialogue, Boldrewood captures the rugged landscape and the complexities of human emotion, employing a style that is both vivid and reflective of the colonial Australian experience. The novel immerses the reader in the psychological landscapes of its characters, blending elements of adventure and horror to explore societal issues of the time, including lawlessness and frontier justice. Rolf Boldrewood, the pen name of Thomas Alexander Browne, was deeply influenced by his experiences in Australia as a pastoralist and writer during the 19th century. His understanding of the harsh realities of life in the Australian bush and the intrigues of early settler society inform the rich characterization and moral dilemmas that populate "The Ghost Camp." Boldrewood'??s background offered him a unique lens through which to view the human propensity for vengeance and the haunting presence of the landscape itself. I highly recommend "The Ghost Camp; or, the Avengers" to readers interested in Australian literature and those who appreciate intricate narratives that weave the supernatural into the fabric of historical reality. This novel not only provides a gripping tale but also serves as a poignant exploration of age-old themes that resonate across cultures and eras.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The House on Camp Ruby Road: Book One of Ghosts of The Big Thicket【電子書籍】[ Twyla Ellis ]

Inheriting an old southern homestead in the deep woods of East Texas may not always be a good thing.

The House on Camp Ruby Road is the story of three generations of women living in the Big Thicket of deep East Texas. It is a mystical place where Eden Devereaux, a college student in the early 1960s is drawn into a haunting world full of damaged and grotesque people, reminiscent of Southern Gothic literature. After inheriting a crumbling southern homestead in the Big Thicket upon the death of her mother, Eden must find out why she is entitled to it. But more importantly, who wants to make sure she doesn’t inherit it and why.

The story weaves around three women: our heroine, who is searching for answers to a childhood dream; an elderly black woman who is living in the house and who holds the key to the mystery of the dream; and a young girl from the river bottom people, fleeing an unbearable life. They form an unlikely bond through adversity. Eden is aided in her search by handsome Jeff Callahan, who better understands the strange world in which she finds herself.

Will she be driven away by blood feuds, secrets, and ghosts? Or will she take a stand and claim what is hers? Through her true Texas grit and determination, she will find out the truth about who she really is, and who it is she truly loves.
