That is why politicians or even natives speakers should be aware of the extent of the sociolinguistic aspects in language development in English-Spanish bilingual communities. Furthermore, I wish to examine the famous term 'Spanglish' and the change in attitudes towards the present concept since its emergence. I will discuss the sociolinguistic aspects and the term's evolution in more detail in the last chapter of my paper. Referring to the particular identity of Hispanics living in the U.S., being able to manage two different languages, bilinguals are capable to code switch within their languages. For this reason, it is essential to define code switching, including its three types of interaction, in the first place in order to distinguish the term in comparison to other linguistic phenomena, such as loan translation or loan words and lexical borrowing, with which one can easily comprehend. Because of the prevalence of lexical and grammatical theories, which have dealt with code switching for the last three decades, I have decided to focus on what are considered to be the three most relevant ones at present linguistic discourse: The Equivalence Constraint, The Free Morpheme Constraint and The Matrix Language Model. In the last part of my paper, I will take a closer look at the term Spanglish in reference to its various implications and what can be included in its today's definition. The history of the research of code change has undergone various periods that have shown how complex the phenomenon of codeswitching and code-mixing are. In the course of research of code change it has become clear that code-switching and code-mixing can be investigated from different perspectives. Researchers focused on code change after they had realized that linguistic forms and practices are interrelated. And code-switching/-mixing, in their turn, embodies not only variation, but the link between linguistic form and language use as social practice. Research from a linguistic and psycholinguistic perspective has focused on understanding the nature of the systematic of code change, as a way of revealing linguistic and potentially cognitive processes. Research on the psychological and social dimensions of code-switching/-mixing has largely been devoted to answering the questions of why speakers code change and what the social meaning of code change is for them. The sociological perspective later goes on to attempt to use the answer to those questions to illuminate how language operates as a social process. Throughout the history of research on code-switching/-mixing it has been proposed that it is necessary to link all these forms of analysis and that, indeed, it is that possibility that is one of the most compelling reasons for studying code-switching/- mixing, since such a link would permit the development and verification of hypotheses regarding the relationship among linguistic, cognitive and social processes in a more general way (Heller, Pfaff 1996). As with any aspect of language contact phenomena, research on code- switching and code- mixing are firstly plagued by the issue of terminological confusion. These "old monsters" have their origins in Aristotle as studied in the universities of medieval Europe, where Christian scholars reconciled works of natural philosophy and medicine with theological precepts. They codified divine perfection as warm, light, male and associated with the ethereal world beyond the moon, while evil imperfection was cold, dark, female and bound to the corrupt world below the moon. All who did not conform to divine goodness--including un-holy women and Jews--were considered evil and ascribed a melancholic, blood hungry and demonic physiology. This construct was the basis for anti-woman and anti-Jewish discourse that has persisted through modern Western culture. Als ich die erste Folge anschaute und mir klar wurde, dass es nicht nur eine normale Familienserie war, sondern dass es sich auch um das Thema der Geh?rlosigkeit drehte. [...] Diese Serie war nicht auf Mitleid aus, sondern wollte einfach nur eine Geschichte erz?hlen - und das auf eine sehr kluge und meiner Ansicht nach wertvolle Art und Weise. Ich merkte, wie ich mich in der Geb?rdensprache zurecht zu finden begann, mich mit dem Thema der Geh?rlosigkeit unbewusst im Alltag auseinandersetzte, mir einfach mal vorstellte nichts h?ren zu k?nnen. In meiner Arbeit ist es mir ein Anliegen die Affekte der Serie auf den Zuschauer darzustellen. Hierzu m?chte ich mich auch mit Behinderungen und im Speziellen mit dem Thema der Geh?rlosigkeit auseinandersetzen. Zu wenig werden wir in unserem Alltag damit konfrontiert. Die Gemeinschaft der Geh?rlosen scheint nicht in unserer 'normalen Welt' sichtbar zu sein. Wichtig ist mir auch, eine Definition der verschiedenen Arten von H?rsch?digung zu liefern und ein Bewusstsein daf?r zu schaffen, dass jemand nicht einfach nur 'taub' ist. Die im ersten Teil gegebenen Definitionen und Informationen zum Thema Behinderung und Geh?rlosigkeit werden dann sp?ter im dritten Teil aufgegriffen und in einen Zusammenhang mit der Serie gestellt. So sind Begrifflichkeiten und die verschiedenen Kategorisierungen, die sp?ter wichtig werden, schon vorab gekl?rt. Des Weiteren werde ich der Frage auf den Grund gehen, wie die im ersten Teil genauer definierte Geh?rlosigkeit im Besonderen in der US-amerikanischen TV-Serie 'Switched at Birth' dargestellt wird. Was bekommt der Zuschauer f?r ein Bild von dem Leben mit dieser Behinderung? Was gibt es f?r Kontroversen rund um das Thema des Cochlea-Implantats, die vermeintliche Wunderheilung der Geh?rlosigkeit? Wie kann der Zuschauer ?berhaupt einer Serie folgen, in der ein Gro?teil der Personen des Hauptcasts ?berhaupt nicht sprechen k?nnen, sondern sich 'nur' durch Geb?rdensprache ausdr?cken k?nnen?
