【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Hands of Jesus and Other Poems【電子書籍】[ Dorothy Mary Stock ]

Dorothy Stock (1913-1990) grew up amidst the delightful countryside and natural beauty of Pendle Hill and Morecambe Bay. She explored and adored the natural beauty of Lancashire, and many of these experiences were later re-created in her early poetry.

Her later poetry was composed as a result of an unforgettable weekend at Park Place Conference Centre, where she encountered God's love and power in a deep way. In these poems we see the close presence of the infinitely caring and loving God ? creator, sustainer, healer, saviour.

A love of Nature, a love of children, but above all, a love of God.

These three gifts shine through the poems and prayers contained within this book, all appropriately written by a former infant school teacher, Dorothy Stock, known affectionately as Dot, Dotty, or Stocky.
Read them, and you will be uplifted in body, mind and spirit.

Enrich your own prayers by using those words from The New Day : 'Grant me the gift of laughter, Lord, that I can share it with some sad and lonely soul.'

You will also undoubtedly benefit from the delicate and imaginative thought that refers to 'the peace of God, [which] passeth understanding. It wraps around the soul with silken wings, the mind is stilled, and hushed all earthly clamour.'

So in the words of the Psalmist: 'Taste and see...'

Heather Phillips
Retired head teacher

As I think back to nearly thirty years ago when, as Director of Music at Horfield Parish Church in Bristol, I first came to know Dottie Stock three things stand out in my mind: her gentle smile, her quiet humility and her strength of faith.

Now, as I read through these pages, those three qualities continue to speak to me in this amazing collection of her poems ? many of which I am re-reading from the ones included in the annual Christmas card from the Stock household.

In Dottie's poetry we are once again reminded of the love of Jesus ? the humble servant king, the eternal hope offered to us through our risen and ascended Saviour, and the sheer joy of being part of God's wonder-filled creation.

For all that we say, 'Thank you and God bless you, Dottie!'

Revd Duncan Jennings

Dorothy Stock's deep faith shone through all her poetry and in her relationship with her family and friends. She saw the hand of God, Our Creator, in the whole of the natural world. Her writings were inspired. It was a privilege for me to have known her.

Rosemary Hatherly

I was honoured to be asked to write my thoughts about a very special person called 'Dottie', who was my 'Twinnie'. She was an integral part of my growing up, and we shared the same birthday.

Her poetry speaks from the heart, and encapsulates all that is beautiful in our world through her love of God and his Son Jesus. Her words speak of sorrow, of joys, of hardships, yet through them all the depth of Dottie's faith in Our Lord shines through.

Dottie shared this with me as I grew up, and supported my growth and development as a Christian, as I struggled with working out what being a Christian meant in our world today. I remember that one Good Friday it snowed; as we walked to church, she looked at the daffodils lining our way and commented, 'Even the daffodils laid down their heads and cried on this day.' I looked and saw that, indeed, all the daffodils had lain down their heads in the snow and truly looked as though they were weeping on the day of crucifixion of Our Lord. That image has stayed with me over the years and her poetry brings so many meaningful images to mind.

Thank you, Dottie. I hope all of you who read her poetry now will see how clearly her words expressed her deep love of God and all that brought with it, whether joyous, sad or testing. Through it all His support and love are constant and unchanging.

Dendy Harris

Poetry can say things which prose cannot and the poetry of others can touch us in ways we are not able ourselves to express in any words. Especially where poems take their inspiration from things all of us see ? in nature, in our local community, among our family and friends ? what they tell us can help us look and listen with fresh eyes and newly opened ears. For Christian people, that's about discerning again the dependence of all that is made and all that befalls us upon the love of God.

These poems from 'Stocky', as I knew her, tell how sensitively she was herself moved by what happened to her in life, both the bright, sunlit times but also the stormy ones, through the whole year, day by day, wherever she was; and how strongly she felt that all she experienced was shaped and held by the love of God. She was, as she would have been the first to admit, an ordinary soul; but another poet tells us that we might just find 'heaven in ordinary'.

Stocky kept us company when I was part of her congregational family in Bristol and, through what she has written here, her inspiration can go on being present, encouraging, revealing, confirming.

John Rodwell
One time non-stipendiary curate, Holy Trinity, Horfield
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Words of Life: Poems and Essays【電子書籍】[ Ann Chiappetta ]

About the Book

In this new collection of poems, essays, and flash fiction, the author once again exhibits her ability to write about both the light and dark sides of life. There are numerous poems and stories about nature: its kindness, cruelty, and wonder. There are frank expressions of the sadness and frustration she felt at the progressive loss of her eyesight and a poem about the social isolation that disability can bring. Other pieces, though, sing of joys as diverse as family closeness, the love of dogs, the delights of scents, and the power of the muse. Just as in her first volume of poetry, Upwelling: Poems (2016), there is no fluff here. To read Ann Chiappetta’s works is to feel them deeply, appreciate them mightily, and remember them forever.

From the Introduction

While it is my hope that all the pieces in this book resonate with my readers, I have my favorites. Some of the poems have been previously published; all reflect what lies within. This volume is accented with a few photographs. As I lose the last vestiges of my vision, bringing a meaningful visual array to this collection seems imperative. Finally, dear reader, I want to share the prose that reflects the way I’ve lived my creative life.

If just one poem or essay resonates with you, I have accomplished the purpose. For a moment, as the eye reads and the brain interprets, the reader slips into the shoes of the writer. This is the true spirit of what it means to be creative, open, to offer the emotions in such a way as to give another person the opportunity to appreciate the writer’s experience with the words of life.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Originally published in 1903, The Singing Leaves is a graceful collection of lyric poems by Josephine Preston Peabody, a distinguished voice in early 20th-century American literature. Subtitled A Book of Songs and Spells, this volume invites readers into a world where imagination meets mysticism, blending natural imagery, quiet reflection, and emotional depth.

Peabody's poems evoke themes of childhood wonder, longing, enchantment, and spiritual reverie. Her writing style-lyrical, delicate, and at times incantatory-has drawn comparisons to Christina Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites, with influences of Shakespearean and Browningesque rhythm and voice. The collection captures fleeting emotions and eternal truths through verse, making it a timeless addition to the poetic canon.

This edition preserves the original structure and spirit of the 1903 publication, offering a fresh opportunity to experience a forgotten gem of American poetry. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Fire in the Water, Earth in the Air Legends of West Texas Music【電子書籍】[ Christopher J. Oglesby ]

From Buddy Holly and the Crickets to the Flatlanders, Terry Allen, and Natalie Maines, Lubbock, Texas, has produced songwriters, musicians, and artists as prolifically as cotton, conservatives, and windstorms. While nobody questions where the conservatives come from in a city that a recent nonpartisan study ranked as America's second most conservative, many people wonder why Lubbock is such fertile ground for creative spirits who want to expand the boundaries of thought in music and art. Is it just that "there's nothing else to do," as some have suggested, or is there something in the character of Lubbock that encourages creativity as much as conservatism?

In this book, Christopher Oglesby interviews twenty-five musicians and artists with ties to Lubbock to discover what it is about this community and West Texas in general that feeds the creative spirit. Their answers are revealing. Some speak of the need to rebel against conventional attitudes that threaten to limit their horizons. Others, such as Joe Ely, praise the freedom of mind they find on the wide open plains. "There is this empty desolation that I could fill if I picked up a pen and wrote, or picked up a guitar and played," he says. Still others express skepticism about how much Lubbock as a place contributes to the success of its musicians. Jimmie Dale Gilmore says, "I think there is a large measure of this Lubbock phenomenon that is just luck, and that is the part that you cannot explain."

As a whole, the interviews create a portrait not only of Lubbock's musicians and artists, but also of the musical community that has sustained them, including venues such as the legendary Cotton Club and the original Stubb's Barbecue. This kaleidoscopic portrait of the West Texas music scene gets to the heart of what it takes to create art in an isolated, often inhospitable environment. As Oglesby says, "Necessity is the mother of creation. Lubbock needed beauty, poetry, humor, and it needed to get up and shake its communal ass a bit or go mad from loneliness and boredom; so Lubbock created the amazing likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Joe Ely."

Rip Van Winkle. Tales of a Traveller.【電子書籍】[ Washington Irving ]

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle, and Tales of a Traveller is a timeless collection of short stories written by Washington Irving, one of America's foremost literary figures. Originally published in the early years of XIX century, this collection has captivated readers for centuries with its haunting and humorous tales that have become iconic pieces of American literature. The book begins with the legendary tale of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, set in a small village in New York state. The story follows the adventures of Ichabod Crane, a superstitious schoolteacher who becomes infatuated with a local beauty, Katrina Van Tassel. However, Crane's pursuit of Katrina is threatened by the presence of a legendary headless horseman who haunts the village at night. With its eerie atmosphere and vivid description of the supernatural, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has become a classic Halloween read and has been adapted into multiple films and television shows. The second story in this collection is Rip Van Winkle, a beloved American folktale that tells the story of a man who falls asleep for 20 years and wakes up to a completely changed world. Set in the countryside of New York, this story is a humorous and satirical commentary on the American Revolution and the changes that occurred in society during this time. Rip Van Winkle's character is an embodiment of the American spirit of independence and his journey highlights the country's transition from a British colony to a newly formed nation. The remaining tales in this collection, collectively known as Tales of a Traveller, showcase Irving's talent for storytelling and his keen observations of human nature. Written in the form of travelogues, these stories take readers on a journey through Europe and the Middle East, exploring themes of love, adventure, and human folly. Through his vivid descriptions and sharp wit, Irving paints a vivid picture of the places he visited and the people he encountered, creating a sense of wonder and escapism for readers. What makes this collection truly remarkable is not just the timeless stories it contains, but also the imaginative and eloquent writing style of Washington Irving. His use of descriptive language, wit, and humor bring the stories to life and transport readers to another time and place. Through his writing, Irving captures the essence of American folklore and showcases the diversity of the American landscape and its people. Moreover, this collection has had a lasting impact on American literature and popular culture. It has inspired countless adaptations, from movies and TV shows to stage productions and even an amusement park ride. Irving's tales have also influenced numerous other writers, including Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and continue to be studied and appreciated by readers of all ages. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle, and Tales of a Traveller is a must-read for anyone interested in American literature, folklore, or simply looking for a good scare. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】About Seasons--The Wind and Weather of Our Days Celebrating Fear and Feeling Alive【電子書籍】[ Robert Nichols ]

about Seasonsーthe Wind and Weather of Our Days: Celebrating Fear and Feeling Alive, is the third in the Footlocker Series of books. These works are a gathering of over fifty years of poetry and prose written by me, Robert Nichols. When I write, I seek to express what is most intimate in my experience in terms that reach a world of readers with universal connection. I’m not the only one out here who gets giddy with the chilled promise of autumn and the lusting energies of spring. And it’s not just some clich? sweetness about leaves and blossoms either. This is the core stuff of being. Seasons, wind, and weatherーthe fierce and beautiful power of Nature can keep us humble and exhilarated throughout our lives. It is the very “life and death” intensity of these metamorphic cycles that excites the turning of our years with risk and wonder. Time takes away our days, storms wash away our safety, seasons etch our flesh with danger. Old Spirits out on the plains once told me, “Earth shall never be tame… Celebrate your fear and feel you are alive!” Yes! So, read my poems and join me in celebration of these blessings of flesh and blood and spirit that are, “… the most primal of elementsーweather and winds and waters and allーthe context of our sublime journeys through mundane moments.”
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】PS Magazine The Best of The Preventive Maintenance Monthly【電子書籍】[ Will Eisner ]

Will Eisnerーbest known for his influential comic book series The Spirit and his groundbreaking graphic novel A Contract with Godーbelieved in the teaching power of comics, and from 1951 to 1971 he produced PS magazine for the U.S. Army. This Preventive Maintenance Monthly (called PS because it was a postscript to the standard technical manuals) was aimed at teaching American soldiers everything about weapons safety for vehicles, aircraft, firearms, and electronics. Eisner illustrated these vital lessons in drawings, pinups, step-by-step guides, and comic strips. This collection contains the best of Eisner’s 227 issues of PS, reproduced in a portable digest format. This relatively unknown work by Eisner is finally exploredーthe missing link between his comic books and his later, more mature graphic novel style.

Praise for PS Magazine:

"For the first time, Will Eisner’s superlative work for the U.S. Army has been assembled into a single collection. The result shows the artist’s keen understanding of the educative power of graphic storytelling. From 1951 to 1971, between The Spirit and A Contract with God, Eisner produced PS Magazine for the army in order to teach the common soldier how best to use, maintain, repair, and requisition their equipment. From explaining how to load a truck correctly to why it won’t start, Eisner used a combination of humor, sound technical writing, and graphic storytelling to educate the soldiers. His magazines could be found at the front lines, in the officer’s mess, and in the quarters of senior military officials. It featured a cast of recurring characters like the loveable Joe Dope and the voluptuous Connie Rodd, who headlined featured segments like “Joe’s Dope Sheet” and the provocatively named “Connie Rodd’s Briefs.” With Eisner’s wonderful artwork and clarity of style making sometimes difficult concepts easy to understand, it’s no wonder PS Magazine was so popular with military personnel. A fascinating document for both fans of Eisner and military history buffs."
- Publishers Weekly starred review

“These amusing yet pragmatic sketches provide a ‘missing-link’ comics document for fans and demonstrate the same mastery of his craft that marked Eisner’s better-known works.”
ーBooklist

“An instructional model for today’s producers of nonfiction comics, which too often lack such visual traction, this also has appeal for military buffs, vehicle junkies, and Eisner fans.”

ーLibrary Journal

“The enthusiast who’s been nurturing a curiosity about Eisner’s lost years will find all he needs to know from this beautifully produced little volume.” *ー*The Comics Journal

"Eisner understood comics' potential for education decades before his peers, and PS magazine was his first laboratory. This thoughtful new collection is an essential addition to the Eisner library."
-Scott McCloud, author of Understanding Comics
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

"Bring the art and beauty of Japan to your garden with inspiration from Kyoto Gardens."
ーHGTV Gardens

Featuring beautiful Japanese garden photography and insightful writing, Kyoto Gardens is a labor of love from master photographer Ben Simmons and Kyoto-based writer Judith Clancy. In their rocks and plants, empty spaces and intimate detailsーKyoto's gardens manifest a unique ability to provoke thought and delight in equal measure. These varied landscapes meld the sensuality of nature with the disciplines of cosmology, poetry and meditation. Japanese aristocrats created these gardens to display not just wealth and power, but cultural sensitivity and an appreciation for transcendent beauty. A class of professional gardeners eventually emerged, transforming Japanese landscape design into a formalized art. Today, Kyoto's gardens display an enormous range of formsーfrom rock gardens display of extreme minimalism and subtle hues, to stroll gardens of luscious proportions and vibrant colors.

In Kyoto Gardens Simmons' photographs present a fresh and contemporary look at Kyoto's most important gardens. Their beauty is enhanced and humanized by gardeners tending the grounds using the tools of their art. Clancy's graceful text provides historical, aesthetic and cultural context to the Japanese gardens. Combining wonder and rigor, she describes how Kyoto's most beloved gardens remain faithful to their founders' creative spirit and conception. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】At Work on the Garments of Refuge Poems by Daniel Marlin and Ralph Dranow【電子書籍】[ Ralph Dranow ]

In 1978, Ralph Dranow and Daniel Marlin met while working at the Oakland (CA) main post office. They hit it off immediately, finding a common passion for writing and concern for social justice. Their nascent friendship took root on the level of deep mutual caring as well as support for each other's writing. And in time, they formed a writing group that lasted 38 years until Dan's death in 2017, and continues today with new members.

This book is both a testament to the remarkable, incisive writing of Dan Marlin by his best friend, Ralph, and an opportunity for readers to taste the riches of this friendship through the poetry of both writers, Ralph being an equally remarkable poet (though with a different flavor). Sometimes their subjects converge, and other times they follow their own unique paths. But in all cases, readers are in for a moving feast for the mind, heart, and moral spirit.

A central thread linking the poems of these two close friends is a sense of compassion for all living beings, especially those easily overlooked, the vulnerable ones, often existing on the margins of society, animals as well as human beings. Humor frequently makes an appearance in these poems, reminding us that life also has its lighter side. Dan Marlin was an accomplished artist who created many vibrant paintings and drawings-some of which appear in this book. This quality of vibrancy is evident in his poems, as well, with his rich imagery and precise details, leaving his readers and listeners with indelible impressions. Ralph Dranow is a close observer of people, and his poems often express the subtle beauty of ordinary human beings. Most of all, the poems in this book pulsate with life, reflecting the joy, wonder, and pain of being alive on this earth.

To Be Human

Forgive me not

the Angel begged,

I've brought you no loaves

of bread,

no honey, not even a single

soul.

My shoes have turned to

dust,

my hat to sand,

the heaven gold in my pocket

is become but ash

in the wind,

and my wings

melted

in one small glance

of your sun!

Good,

answered God-

now you know, perhaps

a little,

what it means

to be

human.

-Daniel Marlin

Cocoon

Only a short distance

From the bustle and chatter,

The serious business of recreation

At the Hawaii Hilton Hotel,

Naomi and I lie in a hammock

On a balmy winter night

Glittering with stars

And a full moon.

As we gently sway,

Our bodies sing,

Surrender to night's embrace,

The wind licking our faces.

We revel in our island of silence,

Our silken cocoon,

And the untrammeled sky

Winking at us,

Trembling with light.

-Ralph Dranow
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
