The Listener's Voice Early Radio and the American Public【電子書籍】[ Elena Razlogova ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Listener's Voice Early Radio and the American Public【電子書籍】[ Elena Razlogova ]

During the Jazz Age and Great Depression, radio broadcasters did not conjure their listening public with a throw of a switch; the public had a hand in its own making. The Listener's Voice describes how a diverse array of Americansーboxing fans, radio amateurs, down-and-out laborers, small-town housewives, black government clerks, and Mexican farmersーparticipated in the formation of American radio, its genres, and its operations.

Before the advent of sophisticated marketing research, radio producers largely relied on listeners' phone calls, telegrams, and letters to understand their audiences. Mining this rich archive, historian Elena Razlogova meticulously recreates the world of fans who undermined centralized broadcasting at each creative turn in radio history. Radio outlaws, from the earliest squatter stations and radio tube bootleggers to postwar "payola-hungry" rhythm and blues DJs, provided a crucial source of innovation for the medium. Engineers bent patent regulations. Network writers negotiated with devotees. Program managers invited high school students to spin records. Taken together, these and other practices embodied a participatory ethic that listeners articulated when they confronted national corporate networks and the formulaic ratings system that developed.

Using radio as a lens to examine a moral economy that Americans have imagined for their nation, The Listener's Voice demonstrates that tenets of cooperation and reciprocity embedded in today's free software, open access, and filesharing activities apply to earlier instances of cultural production in American history, especially at times when new media have emerged.

Black Republicans and the Transformation of the GOP【電子書籍】[ Joshua D. Farrington ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Black Republicans and the Transformation of the GOP【電子書籍】[ Joshua D. Farrington ]

Reflecting on his fifty-year effort to steer the Grand Old Party toward black voters, Memphis power broker George W. Lee declared, "Somebody had to stay in the Republican Party and fight." As Joshua Farrington recounts in his comprehensive history, Lee was one of many black Republican leaders who remained loyal after the New Deal inspired black voters to switch their allegiance from the "party of Lincoln" to the Democrats.

Ideologically and demographically diverse, the ranks of twentieth-century black Republicans included Southern patronage dispensers like Lee and Robert Church, Northern critics of corrupt Democratic urban machines like Jackie Robinson and Archibald Carey, civil rights agitators like Grant Reynolds and T. R. M. Howard, elected politicians like U.S. Senator Edward W. Brooke and Kentucky state legislator Charles W. Anderson, black nationalists like Floyd McKissick and Nathan Wright, and scores of grassroots organizers from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Black Republicans believed that a two-party system in which both parties were forced to compete for the African American vote was the best way to obtain stronger civil rights legislation. Though they were often pushed to the sidelines by their party's white leadership, their continuous and vocal inner-party dissent helped moderate the GOP's message and platform through the 1970s. And though often excluded from traditional narratives of U.S. politics, black Republicans left an indelible mark on the history of their party, the civil rights movement, and twentieth-century political development.

Black Republicans and the Transformation of the GOP marshals an impressive amount of archival material at the national, state, and municipal levels in the South, Midwest, and West, as well as in the better-known Northeast, to open up new avenues in African American political history.

Dynamics and Stability of Continuous-Time Switched Linear Systems【電子書籍】[ Yacine Chitour ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Dynamics and Stability of Continuous-Time Switched Linear Systems【電子書籍】[ Yacine Chitour ]

Linear switched systems are a fascinating field of research, with many theoretical questions arising from applications which require sophisticated mathematical tools for their resolution. This monograph presents a unified theoretical approach for the analysis of stability of continuous-time linear switched systems, organizing and optimizing results scattered throughout literature. Emphasis is placed on the development of a rigorous and complete mathematical theory.

In addition to fundamental tools such as common Lyapunov functions, converse Lyapunov theorems, and maximal Lyapunov exponents, the concept of Barabanov norm is also discussed. While this is now well understood from a theoretical point of view, it has not received much attention in more application-focused settings, likely because this fundamental object was developed in the context of arbitrary switches but has no immediate equivalent for classes of switching signals subject to various constraints (dwell time, persistent excitation, etc.). One of the aims of this text is to bridge this gap as far as possible by explaining how the main features of Barabanov norms can be generalized for classes of constrained switchings. Throughout the text, the authors maintain a general point of view, rather than treating classes of switching signals separately, by developing an axiomatic approach and identifying structural properties of these classes that allow crucial aspects of the Barabanov norm to be extended.

This monograph will be a valuable resource for mathematicians and control engineers interested in continuous-time switched linear systems, as well as a definitive reference for more experienced researchers.

Leadership That Gets Results (Harvard Business Review Classics)【電子書籍】[ Daniel Goleman ]

A leader's singular job is to get results. But even with all the leadership training programs and "expert" advice available, effective leadership still eludes many people and organizations. One reason, says Daniel Goleman, is that such experts offer advice based on inference, experience, and instinct, not on quantitative data. Now, drawing on research of more than 3,000 executives, Goleman explores which precise leadership behaviors yield positive results. He outlines six distinct leadership styles, each one springing from different components of emotional intelligence. Each style has a distinct effect on the working atmosphere of a company, division, or team, and, in turn, on its financial performance. Coercive leaders demand immediate compliance. Authoritative leaders mobilize people toward a vision. Affiliative leaders create emotional bonds and harmony. Democratic leaders build consensus through participation. Pacesetting leaders expect excellence and self-direction. And coaching leaders develop people for the future. The research indicates that leaders who get the best results don't rely on just one leadership style; they use most of the styles in any given week. Goleman details the types of business situations each style is best suited for, and he explains how leaders who lack one or more of these styles can expand their repertories. He maintains that with practice leaders can switch among leadership styles to produce powerful results, thus turning the art of leadership into a science.

The Harvard Business Review Classics series offers you the opportunity to make seminal Harvard Business Review articles a part of your permanent management library. Each highly readable volume contains a groundbreaking idea that continues to shape best practices and inspire countless managers around the worldーand will have a direct impact on you today and for years to come.

Social Context and Fluency in L2 Learners The Case of Wales【電子書籍】[ Dr. Lynda Pritchard Newcombe ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Social Context and Fluency in L2 Learners The Case of Wales【電子書籍】[ Dr. Lynda Pritchard Newcombe ]

Social context, an often-neglected dimension in L2 learning/use, can play a vital role in sustaining learners’ initial motivation. As researchers have begun to shift their focus from teaching to learners and learner variables, what happens to learners when they practise their new skills in the community, has become an important area of concern. Using data on Welsh learners’ experiences outside the classroom, the author argues that, in order to learn a second or foreign language successfully, learners require regular interaction in the target language in a setting in which they feel comfortable. The impact on learners of native speakers’ switch to a language of wider communication, their speed of speech, use of dialect and identity issues are explored as are the relevance of practical issues such as time and opportunity and affective factors such as anxiety.

Code-switching A Case Study of Kurdish-German Pre-school Bilingual Children【電子書籍】[ Baban Mohamed ]

The state of acquiring more than one language as a child or an adult is not the exception; it is rather an everyday reality for a quite substantial part of today’s society. This book explores the phenomenon of code-switching within the field of child bilingualism from both linguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives. Based on collected data from Kurdish-German pre-school bilingual children in Austria, this empirical study aims at giving an analysis of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that constrain child code-switching. The book shows specific interest in practices of code switching and mixing as displayed by Kurdish subjects of the study and in how far these can be sufficiently explained by existing models of (adult) bilingual language behavior. The results clearly show that code-switching can be related to the identity and characteristics of the speakers or to aspects of their social life, and that it can be subconsciously used to manage conflict when different languages are associated with different roles in a community.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Islamic Banking and Finance in Europe: The Case of Germany and United Kingdom A Theoretical and an Empirical Analysis【電子書籍】[ Muhammad Ashfaq ]

The Islamic financial industry is expanding rapidly into non-Muslim countries including Western Europe. The author analyses what the prospects of success for an Islamic mode of banking and finance in Germany are at the retail level. The quantitative study revealed that two-thirds of respondents were willing to switch to Islamic banking, and that Giro and savings bank accounts and mortgage financing products and services were most desired by the respondents. The qualitative study showed that the success of Islamic Banking and Finance in the United Kingdom is mainly due to the proactive role taken by regulators and London’s role as an international financial center. Germany’s regulatory model is different than that of the United Kingdom in that there are no market entry barriers, and the success of Islamic banking in Germany will largely depend on the operating model of Islamic financial institutions.

Plurilingual Code-Switching between Standard and Local Varieties A Socio-Psycholinguistic Approach【電子書籍】[ Dino Selvaggi ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Plurilingual Code-Switching between Standard and Local Varieties A Socio-Psycholinguistic Approach【電子書籍】[ Dino Selvaggi ]

This book presents a comparative study on plurilingual code-switching (CS) in Italy, Croatia and Scotland-UK, based on Italian in contact with four standard varieties (Spanish, English, Philipino and Croatian) and five non-standard varieties (Arbereshe, Occitan, Calabrese, Istrovenetian and Chakavski).

It intends to fill a gap in the literature by proposing an interdisciplinary perspective, as most studies are concentrated on bilingual CS and are grounded just in one approach (mostly sociolinguistic or psycholinguistic); it also presents a new mixed key for CS data analysis, going beyond the traditional neat dichotomies defining CS as ≪acceptable or grammatical vs unacceptable or ungrammatical≫.

A brand-new model, the Integrated Model of Plurilingual Code-Switching (IMPCS), which recommends the use of five-graded scales in informants’ judgments, is proposed. It includes socio-psycholinguistics (social status and prestige of the languages in contact, official status of minority language, symmetrical/bi- or pluridirectional or asymmetrical/unidirectional kind of contact, language mode, claimed CS practice, explicit attitudes and acceptability judgements) and lexicalist variables.

Chapter 1: The Morning Light

The kettle whistled softly, steam curling through the early light like a ghost rising. Janelle stood at the stove, one hand on her hip, the other gripping a chipped mug. She wore a tired hoodie over an old tank top, her curls twisted up in a frizzed bun. The house was smallーtwo bedrooms, peeling linoleum, and a fridge that hummed louder than it should. But it was hers. The silence was peaceful now, not loaded with tension or fear.

In the next room, Ava was organizing breakfast with her brothers like she’d done it a hundred times before. Elijah, age six, had poured cereal onto the table more than into his bowl, and four-year-old Caleb was licking peanut butter off a spoon with great satisfaction.

Janelle leaned on the doorframe and watched them, a fragile smile tugging at her lips.

“Mom,” Ava said without looking up, “we’re out of bananas.”

“That’s because someone eats them like candy,” Janelle teased, nudging Elijah with her foot as she walked by. He giggled, sticky hands reaching up for a hug.

This was the best part of her day. Before school, before work, before the hustle and grind wore her down again. In these quiet moments, she could pretend everything was normal.

But normal was a mask she’d learned to wear too well.

Ava’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Mommy, are you okay?”

Janelle blinked. The words hit harder than they should have. Not because they were strangeーbut because they weren’t. Ava had asked that question three times this week. And Janelle had given the same answer each time: “Of course, baby. I’m fine.”

But she wasn’t fine.

She was tired. Not just from working two jobs or from barely sleeping, but from carrying the weight of memories she had never unpacked. From hiding the scars under long sleeves. From pretending that the years of yelling, gaslighting, and bruises hadn’t left their imprint on her soul.

She crouched next to Ava, brushing a strand of hair behind her daughter’s ear.

“I will be,” she said softly.

Ava’s eyes held hers for a momentーbig, brown, and full of quiet understanding far beyond her years. She nodded, as if she believed her mom. Or maybe as if she just needed to.

Janelle kissed her forehead and stood, swallowing the lump in her throat. She had made it through worse. She could make it through this.

But deep inside, a voiceーfaint and unfamiliarーwhispered that maybe it was time. Time to face what she had buried. Time to stop surviving and start healing.

She wasn’t sure where to begin. But something in Ava’s question stayed with her long after she dropped the kids at school and headed to her cleaning shift.

Are you okay?

No.

Not yet.

But maybe… someday.

Chapter 2: The House of Secrets

Janelle was eight when she learned how to disappear without leaving the room.

She sat in the corner of the living room, knees pulled to her chest, while the sound of the TV echoed through the thin walls. Her mother, Simone, laughed too loud at a sitcom no one found funny. The boyfriendーRayーsat beside her, one hand always holding a bottle, the other resting too easily on Simone’s thigh.

Janelle hated that hand.

He always looked at her too long. Spoke to her like she was older than she was. Called her “baby girl” in a way that made her skin crawl.

She had told her mother once. Just once.

“He comes in my room sometimes when you’re asleep,” Janelle had whispered, standing in the narrow kitchen, her voice barely rising above the hum of the fridge.

Her mother didn’t look up from her cigarette. “He wouldn’t do that.”

“Iーheー” Janelle stammered. Her eyes burned. Her voice cracked.

Simone turned then, her face hardened by things Janelle didn’t yet understand. “Don’t go telling lies just because you don’t like who I’m with.”

That was it. One sentence. One moment that taught Janelle it was safer to keep her mouth shut.

So she did.

She learned to sleep light, never facing the door. She kept clothes on even under the blankets. She stopped crying, stopped asking for help. At school, she was quiet but polite. Teachers liked her, called her “a sweet girl.” No one saw the hollowed-out center behind her eyes.

Ray eventually leftーafter two years of stealing Janelle’s childhood. Simone replaced him with another man. Then another. Some were cruel, others indifferent. All of them treated Janelle like she was invisible unless they needed something from her. She learned to cook young. Learned to lie to the neighbors. Learned how to smile when nothing felt good.

By thirteen, Janelle had perfected the art of escape. She’d slip out after school and stay at the library for hours, pretending to read while mostly just existing in silence. There was something sacred in those quiet halls, something safe.

One librarian, Miss Harding, used to set aside books for herーmysteries, fantasy novels, poetry. “You’ve got a curious mind,” she said once, smiling gently. “Don’t let anyone dim that light.”

Janelle never forgot that. A single kindness in a world full of indifference.

But curiosity was a dangerous thing when you lived in a house of secrets. So Janelle folded herself smaller each year. She survived by shrinking.

And yet, nowーdecades laterーthose memories lived just beneath her skin, pulsing with every loud voice, every slammed door, every touch she hadn’t consented to.

In her small apartment, she stood in front of the mirror after her shift, wiping away the sweat from her brow. She looked at herselfーnot just the tired eyes and worn hands, but the girl still trapped inside.

“You’re not there anymore,” she whispered to her reflection.

But some part of her still was.

And that part was readyーfinallyーto be seen.

Chapter 3: Bruises and Bargains

Janelle met Marcus when she was nineteen. He was twenty-five, charming in the way older men sometimes seemed to beーespecially to girls who had grown up needing protection they never got.

He worked at a tire shop. Drove a beat-up Mustang. Smoked menthols. He always had something slick to say, and he knew exactly how to make Janelle feel seen. For a girl like herーbroke, half-invisible, and carrying wounds no one had noticedーattention felt like safety.

At first, it was sweet.

He’d bring her food when she forgot to eat. Walk her home from her job at the diner. Call her “baby girl” in a way that somehow didn’t make her flinchーat least not yet. He said all the right things: You’re beautiful. You deserve more. I’ll take care of you.

And she believed him.

Because believing him was easier than admitting she had no one else.

They moved in together six months later. Janelle had dropped out of community college to work full-time. Marcus said she didn’t need school. Said she had everything she needed right here. For a while, she told herself he was right.

Then came the first broken plate.

It wasn’t about anything bigーshe’d forgotten to wash his clothes. His voice had turned sharp, a sound she hadn’t heard before. He yelled. Loud. Slammed his fist on the table.

Then, like flipping a switch, he kissed her forehead and said he was sorry.

He had a temper, that’s all. Men got angry. She’d seen worse. She told herself it was normal.

But it wasn’t just yelling. It became silence when she tried to speak. Jokes that dug like blades. Questions like, Why are you wearing that? Who were you talking to? You think you’re better than me now?

She didn’t see it as control at first. She saw it as love.

Then Ava was born.

For a while, Marcus softened. He doted on the baby. Brought diapers, held her during cartoons. But stress changed him againーmoney was tight, bills piled up. His kindness became rare. His anger returned.

The first time he hit her, Ava was two. Janelle was six months pregnant with Elijah.

It wasn’t a punch. Just a backhand across the mouth, swift and stunning. She dropped to her knees and tasted copper. He said she was “talking reckless.” That she needed to learn how to respect him.

Janelle didn’t scream. She didn’t run.

She made a bargain with herself instead.

If he doesn’t do it again… if the kids don’t see… if I can just keep him calm…

She walked on eggshells for years, dancing between moods, reading his face before he even spoke. She told herself she stayed for the children. That it was better to have a father in the houseーeven a broken oneーthan no father at all.

But deep down, she knew the truth.

She stayed because no one had ever taught her what love should really feel like.

She stayed because she believed pain was the price of belonging.

She stayed because survival was all she knew.

But Ava was watching. And one night, her daughter’s eyesーwide, quiet, and questioningーforced Janelle to see it all for what it was.

Not love. Not safety.

Just another prison.

Chapter 4: The Whisper That Changed Everything

The night was quiet in the kind of way that used to feel dangerous.

Janelle lay in bed, her arms wrapped tightly around her youngest, Caleb, whose warm breath tickled her col画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

Ovid's Tragic Heroines Gender Abjection and Generic Code-Switching【電子書籍】[ Jessica A. Westerhold ]

Ovid's Tragic Heroines expands our understanding of Ovid's incorporation of Greek generic codes and the tragic heroines, Phaedra and Medea, while offering a new perspective on the Roman poet's persistent interest in these two characters and their paradigms. Ovid presents these two Attic tragic heroines as symbols of different passions that are defined by the specific combination of their gender and generic provenance. Their failure to be understood and their subsequent punishment are constructed as the result of their female "nature," and are generically marked as "tragic." Ovid's masculine poetic voice, by contrast, is given free rein to oscillate and play with poetic possibilities.

Jessica A. Westerhold focuses on select passages from the poems Ars Amatoria, Heroides, and Metamorphoses. Building on existing scholarship, she analyzes the dynamic nature of generic categories and codes in Ovid's poetry, especially the interplay of elegy and epic. Further, her analysis of Ovid's reception applies the idea of the abject to elucidate Ovid's process of constructing gender and genre in his poetry.

Ovid's Tragic Heroines incorporates established theories of the performativity of sex, gender, and kinship roles to understand the continued maintenance of the normative and abject subject positions Ovid's poetry creates. The resulting analysis reveals how Ovid's Phaedras and Medeas offer alternatives both to traditional gender roles and to material appropriate to a poem's genre, ultimately using the tragic code to introduce a new perspective to epic and elegy.

Codeswitching in University English-Medium Classes Asian Perspectives【

In the complex, multilingual societies of the 21st century, codeswitching is an everyday occurrence, and yet the use of students’ first language in the English language classroom has been consistently discouraged by teachers and educational policy-makers. This volume begins by examining current theoretical work on codeswitching and then proceeds to examine the convergence and divergence between university language teachers’ beliefs about codeswitching and their classroom practice. Each chapter investigates the extent of, and motivations for, codeswitching in one or two particular contexts, and the interactive and pedagogical functions for which alternative languages are used. Many teachers, and policy-makers, in schools as well as universities, may rethink existing ’English-only’ policies in the light of the findings reported in this book.

Breaking Point The Ironic Evolution of Psychiatry in World War II【電子書籍】[ Rebecca Schwartz Greene ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Breaking Point The Ironic Evolution of Psychiatry in World War II【電子書籍】[ Rebecca Schwartz Greene ]

WINNER, SOCIETY FOR MILITARY HISTORY DISTINGUISHED BOOK AWARDS - FIRST BOOK

This book informs the public for the first time about the impact of American psychiatry on soldiers during World War II.

Breaking Point is the first in-depth history of American psychiatry in World War II. Drawn from unpublished primary documents, oral histories, and the author’s personal interviews and correspondence over years with key psychiatric and military policymakers, it begins with Franklin Roosevelt’s endorsement of a universal Selective Service psychiatric examination followed by Army and Navy pre- and post-induction examinations. Ultimately, 2.5 million men and women were rejected or discharged from military service on neuropsychiatric grounds. Never before or since has the United States engaged in such a program.

In designing Selective Service Medical Circular No. 1, psychiatrist Harry Stack Sullivan assumed psychiatrists could predict who might break down or falter in military service or even in civilian life thereafter. While many American and European psychiatrists questioned this belief, and huge numbers of American psychiatric casualties soon raised questions about screening’s validity, psychiatric and military leaders persisted in 1942 and 1943 in endorsing ever tougher screening and little else. Soon, families complained of fathers and teens being drafted instead of being identified as psychiatric 4Fs, and Blacks and Native Americans, among others, complained of bias. A frustrated General George S. Patton famously slapped two “malingering” neuropsychiatric patients in Sicily (a sentiment shared by Marshall and Eisenhower, though they favored a tamer style). Yet psychiatric rejections, evacuations, and discharges mounted.

While psychiatrist Roy Grinker and a few others treated soldiers close to the front in Tunisia in early 1943, this was the exception. But as demand for manpower soared and psychiatrists finally went to the field and saw that combat itself, not “predisposition,” precipitated breakdown, leading military psychiatrists switched their emphasis from screening to prevention and treatment. But this switch was too little too late and slowed by a year-long series of Inspector General investigations even while numbers of psychiatric casualties soared.

Ironically, despite and even partly because of psychiatrists’ wartime performance, plus the emotional toll of war, postwar America soon witnessed a dramatic growth in numbers, popularity, and influence of the profession, culminating in the National Mental Health Act (1946). But veterans with “PTSD,” not recognized until 1980, were largely neglected.

Transforming Technologies to Manage Our Information The Future of Personal Information Management, Part II【電子書籍】[ William Jones ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Transforming Technologies to Manage Our Information The Future of Personal Information Management, Part II【電子書籍】[ William Jones ]

With its theme, "Our Information, Always and Forever," Part I of this book covers the basics of personal information management (PIM) including six essential activities of PIM and six (different) ways in which information can be personal to us. Part I then goes on to explore key issues that arise in the "great migration" of our information onto the Web and into a myriad of mobile devices. Part 2 provides a more focused look at technologies for managing information that promise to profoundly alter our practices of PIM and, through these practices, the way we lead our lives. Part 2 is in five chapters: - Chapter 5. Technologies of Input and Output. Technologies in support of gesture, touch, voice, and even eye movements combine to support a more natural user interface (NUI). Technologies of output include glasses and "watch" watches. Output will also increasingly be animated with options to "zoom". - Chapter 6. Technologies to Save Our Information. We can opt for "life logs" to record our experiences with increasing fidelity. What will we use these logs for? And what isn’t recorded that should be? - Chapter 7. Technologies to Search Our Information. The potential for personalized search is enormous and mostly yet to be realized. Persistent searches, situated in our information landscape, will allow us to maintain a diversity of projects and areas of interest without a need to continually switch from one to another to handle incoming information. - Chapter 8. Technologies to Structure Our Information. Structure is key if we are to keep, find, and make effective use of our information. But how best to structure? And how best to share structured information between the applications we use, with other people, and also with ourselves over time? What lessons can we draw from the failures and successes in web-based efforts to share structure? - Chapter 9. PIM Transformed and Transforming: Stories from the Past, Present and Future. Part 2 concludes with a comparison between Licklider’s world of information in 1957 and our own world of information today. And then we consider what the world of information is likely to look like in 2057. Licklider estimated that he spent 85% of his "thinking time" in activities that were clerical and mechanical and might (someday) be delegated to the computer. What percentage of our own time is spent with the clerical and mechanical? What about in 2057? Multitasking in the Digital Age【電子書籍】[ Gloria Mark ]

In our digital age we can communicate, access, create, and share an abundance of information effortlessly, rapidly, and nearly ubiquitously. The consequence of having so many choices is that they compete for our attention: we continually switch our attention between different types of information while doing different types of tasks--in other words, we multitask. The activity of information workers in particular is characterized by the continual switching of attention throughout the day. In this book, empirical work is presented, based on ethnographic and sensor data collection, which reveals how multitasking affects information workers' activities, mood, and stress in real work environments. Multitasking is discussed from various perspectives: activity switching, interruptions as triggers for activity switching, email as a major source of interruptions, and the converse of distractions: focused attention. All of these factors are components of information work. This book begins by defining multitasking and describing different research approaches used in studying multitasking. It then describes how multiple factors occur to encourage multitasking in the digitally-enabled workplace: the abundance and ease of accessing information, the number of different working spheres, the workplace environment, attentional state, habit, and social norms. Empirical work is presented describing the nature of multitasking, the relationship of different types of interruptions and email with overload and stress, and patterns of attention focus. The final chapter ties these factors together and discusses challenges that information workers in our digital age face.

The Lost Boys of Sudan An American Story of the Refugee Experience【電子書籍】[ Mark Bixler ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Lost Boys of Sudan An American Story of the Refugee Experience【電子書籍】[ Mark Bixler ]

In 2000 the United States began accepting 3,800 refugees from one of Africa’s longest civil wars. They were just some of the thousands of young men, known as “Lost Boys,” who had been orphaned or otherwise separated from their families in the chaos of a brutal conflict that has ravaged Sudan since 1983. The Lost Boys of Sudan focuses on four of these refugees. Theirs, however, is a typical story, one that repeated itself wherever the Lost Boys could be found across America.

Jacob Magot, Peter Anyang, Daniel Khoch, and Marko Ayii were among 150 or so Lost Boys who were resettled in Atlanta. Like most of their fellow refugees, they had never before turned on a light switch, used a kitchen appliance, or ridden in a car or subway trainーmuch less held a job or balanced a checkbook. We relive their early excitement and disorientation, their growing despondency over fruitless job searches, adjustments they faced upon finally entering the workforce, their experiences of post-9/11 xenophobia, and their undying dreams of acquiring an education.

As we immerse ourselves in the Lost Boys’ daily lives, we also get to know the social services professionals and volunteers, celebrities, community leaders, and others who guided themーwith occasional detoursーtoward self-sufficiency. Along the way author Mark Bixler looks closely at the ins and outs of U.S. refugee policy, the politics of international aid, the history of Sudan, and the radical Islamist underpinnings of its government. America is home to more foreign-born residents than ever before; the Lost Boys have repaid that gift in full through their example of unflagging resolve, hope, and faith.

Sorry I Worried You Stories【電子書籍】[ Gary Fincke ]

In these twelve intelligent tales, seasoned poet and story writer Gary Fincke reconciles lost hope and quiet despair with small blessings and ultimate redemption. In his world, as easily as one man becomes a hero, another is riddled with failure. Fincke weaves together the large and small tragedies of daily life to create an inescapable, yet at times oddly comforting, reality. His characters inhabit a world of strip malls and fast-food joints, low-down jobs and physical ailments, lottery tickets and cheap beer. Here, everyone and everything is suspicious, and only the luck of the draw determines who, if anyone, will survive.

In the title story, Ben, a fifty-year-old bookstore clerk facing the possibility of prostate cancer, feels his life spiraling out of control as he endures his female doctor's examinations with childlike embarrassment on the one hand and struggles to conceal his age from his teenybopper coworkers on the other. Ben's only consolation is that "every day he heard about something a hundred times worse." In "Gatsby, Tender, Paradise," Bridgeford encounters a group of lightning strike and electrocution victims and feels lucky to have survived several light-switch shocksーthe same type of shocks that have permanently disabled one man in the group. Such are the small but important blessings that ultimately rescue Fincke's characters from despair. Here at last is someone who can articulate both our constant, mortal desire to transcend ordinary experience and our simultaneous comfort in the unremarkable and familiar.

Zones of Rebellion Kurdish Insurgents and the Turkish State【電子書籍】[ Aysegul Aydin ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Zones of Rebellion Kurdish Insurgents and the Turkish State【電子書籍】[ Aysegul Aydin ]

How do insurgents and governments select their targets? Which ideological discourses and organizational policies do they adopt to win civilian loyalties and control territory? Aysegul Aydin and Cem Emrence suggest that both insurgents and governments adopt a wide variety of coercive strategies in war environments. Zones of Rebellion integrates Turkish-Ottoman history with social science theory and unveils long-term policies that continue to inform the distribution of violence in Anatolia. The authors show the astonishing similarity in combatants' practices over time and their resulting inability to consolidate Kurdish people and territory around their respective political agendas.

The Kurdish insurgency in Turkey is one of the longest-running civil wars in the Middle East. For the first time, Zones of Rebellion demonstrates how violence in this conflict has varied geographically. Identifying distinct zones of violence, Aydin and Emrence show why Kurds and Kurdish territories have followed different political trajectories, guaranteeing continued strife between Kurdish insurgents and the Turkish state in an area where armed groups organized along ethnic lines have battled the central state since Ottoman times.

Aydin and Emrence present the first empirical analysis of Kurdish insurgency, relying on original data. These new datasets include information on the location, method, timing, target, and outcome of more than ten thousand insurgent attacks and counterinsurgent operations between 1984 and 2008. Another data set registers civilian unrest in Kurdish urban centers for the same period, including nearly eight hundred incidents ranging from passive resistance to active challenges to Turkey's security forces. The authors argue that both state agents and insurgents are locked into particular tactics in their conduct of civil war and that the inability of combatants to switch from violence to civic politics leads to a long-running stalemate. Such rigidity blocks negotiations and prevents battlefield victories from being translated into political solutions and lasting agreements.
