American Crucible Race and Nation in the Twentieth Century【電子書籍】[ Gary Gerstle ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】American Crucible Race and Nation in the Twentieth Century【電子書籍】[ Gary Gerstle ]

This sweeping history of twentieth-century America follows the changing and often conflicting ideas about the fundamental nature of American society: Is the United States a social melting pot, as our civic creed warrants, or is full citizenship somehow reserved for those who are white and of the "right" ancestry? Gary Gerstle traces the forces of civic and racial nationalism, arguing that both profoundly shaped our society.

After Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders to victory during the Spanish American War, he boasted of the diversity of his men's origins- from the Kentucky backwoods to the Irish, Italian, and Jewish neighborhoods of northeastern cities. Roosevelt’s vision of a hybrid and superior “American race,” strengthened by war, would inspire the social, diplomatic, and economic policies of American liberals for decades. And yet, for all of its appeal to the civic principles of inclusion, this liberal legacy was grounded in “Anglo-Saxon” culture, making it difficult in particular for Jews and Italians and especially for Asians and African Americans to gain acceptance.

Gerstle weaves a compelling story of events, institutions, and ideas that played on perceptions of ethnic/racial difference, from the world wars and the labor movement to the New Deal and Hollywood to the Cold War and the civil rights movement. We witness the remnants of racial thinking among such liberals as FDR and LBJ; we see how Italians and Jews from Frank Capra to the creators of Superman perpetuated the New Deal philosophy while suppressing their own ethnicity; we feel the frustrations of African-American servicemen denied the opportunity to fight for their country and the moral outrage of more recent black activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, and Malcolm X.

Gerstle argues that the civil rights movement and Vietnam broke the liberal nation apart, and his analysis of this upheaval leads him to assess Reagan’s and Clinton’s attempts to resurrect nationalism. Can the United States ever live up to its civic creed? For anyone who views racism as an aberration from the liberal premises of the republic, this book is must reading.

Containing a new chapter that reconstructs and dissects the major struggles over race and nation in an era defined by the War on Terror and by the presidency of Barack Obama, American Crucible is a must-read for anyone who views racism as an aberration from the liberal premises of the republic.

How to Study【電子書籍】[ Frank M. Mcmurry ]

No doubt every one can recall peculiar methods of study that he or some one else has at some time followed. During my attendance at high school I often studied aloud at home, along with several other temporary or permanent members of the family. I remember becoming exasperated at times by one of my girl companions. She not only read her history aloud, but as she read she stopped to repeat each sentence five times with great vigor. Although the din interfered with my own work, I could not help but admire her endurance; for the physical labor of mastering a lesson was certainly equal to that of a good farm hand, for the same period of time.
This way of studying history seemed extremely ridiculous. But the method pursued by myself and several others in beginning algebra at about the same time was not greatly superior. Our text-book contained several long sets of problems which were the terror of the class, and scarcely one of which we were able to solve alone. We had several friends, however, who could solve them, and, by calling upon them for help, we obtained the "statement" for each one. All these statements I memorized, and in that way I was able to "pass off" the subject...

African Pride and the German Guide Petty Octopus Got Crucified【電子書籍】[ Koushik Castle ]

Revolutionary Poetry Book "African Pride and the German Guide" Exposes Present Forms of Racial Discrimination A new poetry book entitled African Pride and the German Guide: Petty Octopus Got Crucified by Koushik Castle released, and will most certainly cause an uproar. Castle, who is a well-known Indian poet, wrote the book in a very realistic and strikingly contemporary voice - as it controversially exposes the exploitation of Africans as well as African Americans by policy makers of developed and undeveloped countries. Gandhi started his movement against color discrimination in South Africa more than 100 years ago and now Castle is again trying to draw the attention of people towards current and prevalent color discrimination in various nations. For instance, in the book, Castle statistically describes how consumerism supports modern day slavery in the forms of child labor and child militancy in Africa. Some of the poems are piercing pieces of social commentary, and others are very path breaking as they shockingly reveal that people are hiding the real factors when they blame the mismanagement of African countries for their problems. In one poem entitled 'Rwandan Coffee', Castle rhythmically reveals the little-known fact that it was American Coffee Middlemen who were responsible for hunger and militancy in Rwanda during the decade of the nineties. In poems like 'Gold Coins of Congo' and 'Diamond of Darkness', readers will have a first hand experience of how children are exploited in gold mines of Congo and diamond fields in Sierra Leone. In poems like 'Don't Color the Prison', 'West Coast Vs East Coast' and 'Hip Hop Shady', Castle portraits contemporary African American characters and describes their problems and apathy of government administration towards them and deflates collective euphoria of equality and change promised to them. All of the poems are so lyrical that it is expected that many of them will be adapted into hip hop and rock songs. Castle also poetically describes the fairness obsession in the world's largest democratic country, India - where many of the Indian people still consider being light-skinned to be better than dark skinned. By exploiting this obsession, global cream companies are generating wealth by selling whitening creams. A staunch supporter of women rights, Castle's book also features poems like 'Russian Beauty' - which is a heart touching description of how women are trafficked in today's modern world and are forced to sell their bodies. 'Souls of Girls' exposes the cruel mindsets of people who kill their daughters even before they are born by using techniques like ultrasound. 'Nazi Minds', 'Precious', and 'Hello Mr. Prince and 'Petty Octopus' are definitely going to spark controversy as the poet boldly gives the psychological insights of the people who still feel they are superior to others. Poems like 'Precious' and 'Hello Mr. Prince openly criticize those who make comments on the physical appearances of others and the way they dress. Any poetry book is incomplete without romance, so Castle has written eternal romantic poems like 'Romantic Isle' and 'Folded Pages' as well as poems like 'Teen Sins' and 'Apologies' - which are inspired by modern day youth lifestyle. He didn't forget to write futuristic poems like 'Digital Games', 'Beyond Fifth Dimension', 'Prisoner of Binary' - which really gives a look in to the world's future.

Guyana: from Slavery to the Present Vol. 2 Major Diseases【電子書籍】[ Ramesh Gampat ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Guyana: from Slavery to the Present Vol. 2 Major Diseases【電子書籍】[ Ramesh Gampat ]

It is common knowledge that slavery and indenture were characterized by long hours of physical labor, restriction of movement and other basic human freedoms, and severe punishment for violations of draconian labor laws. Less well known is the fact that nutrition was very deficient and a range of infectious diseases maimed, debilitated and killed on a large scale.

In trying to narrow the knowledge gap with respect to Guyana, Ramesh Gampat shows that extremely poor sanitary conditions, awful hygiene and malnutrition hastened widespread infections and created a vicious cycle. The British protected its own soldiers, officials and colonists by establishing a medical enclave that lasted until Emancipation in 1838. Former slaves were then quarantined to neglected and decaying villages and Indians to plantations. Concern with health conditions appeared only during periods of epidemics and even then it was essentially for the protection of Europeans. Colonial medicine opened the way for stereotyping, labeling, racialization of disease, neutralization of potential leaders in the struggle for justice, and crystallization of the view that Europeans were superior to Blacks and Indians. Shorter stature and shorter life expectancy are good indications that slaves and indentured immigrants fared considerably less well than Europeans.

Several infectious diseases sickened and fell Blacks and Indians, including malaria and undefined fevers, pneumonia and bronchitis, diarrhea and enteritis, tuberculosis, pneumonia and hookworm. The conquest of malaria in the early 1950s accelerated the epidemiological transition from communicable to chronic noncommunicable diseases, and today NCDs account for some three-quarters of all deaths in Guyana. Malaria has reemerged, fueled by a gold boom that consumes huge amounts of mercury. The potentially adverse public health consequences of this relatively new dynamic, the combined trio, have been neglected.

The Last Underclass Geneticists Divide Humanity into Two Classes and Try to Eliminate the Lesser【電子書籍】[ Dean Warren ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Last Underclass Geneticists Divide Humanity into Two Classes and Try to Eliminate the Lesser【電子書籍】[ Dean Warren ]

Civilized humanity historically has an impoverished, downtrodden underclass: the Egyptian pyramid workers, the Roman Empires slaves, the medieval serfs, and the twentieth centurys urban ghetto-dwellers. Normally this class has a useful role: manual labor in mine and field, or service in home and restaurant. Cannon fodder. But as the computer age develops, complex machinery replaces labor, smart programs obsolete human services, and fire and forget missiles replace infantry. Even the need for skilled labor and middle management shrivels.

In the twenty-first century the productivity of an individual worker skyrockets, so much so that only a few produce all of civilizations basic needs. Thus billions of people become useless, while high technologys surplus prevents starvation, plague, and war.

Humanity changes itself, too. Many rich couples select superior genetic characteristics for their babies. Stem-cell injections rejuvenate aged brains. Then members of the upper class transplant those brains into bodies of the young poor. Finally, chromosome-alteration leads to extended life spans. Two classes, the unemployed that live on welfare and the powerful, separate into different sub-species.

Surplus population damages the environment and discomfits the rich. They anticipate eternal life and want parkland, fresh air, and carefree association with their own kind. They dissolve fertility suppressant in ghetto water supplies. Thus science and greed conspire against the poor.

John "QUIET" Griffin is a "Welfie raised in the crowded ghetto of San Angeles, the combined San Diego and Los Angeles megacity. He must battle the rulers of his society to avoid genocide and achieve justice.

REVIEWS

In the July, 2002 issue, the Midwest Book Review says "The Last Underclass is enthusiastically recommended for hard core science fiction fans."

#
The Compulsive Reader reports in July, 2002 that "Dean Warren has written a fascinating science fiction story that moves through time and space at lightning speed...This book is certainly thought provoking as well as entertaining reading."
#
Curled Up With A Good Book reports on July 18, 2002 that "The Last Underclass is the kind of book that redeems the whole self-publishing print-on-demand trend. Well-written and thoughtful..."
#
MY SHELF, on 11/1/2002, states: "Read THE LAST UNDERCLASS"
#
RAMBLES, a cultural arts magazine, states in August of 2002: "Warren manages to tell a story heavy in dialogue and political manuevering without losing a sense of speed. His message will likely speak to the growing number of people concerned with the fast march of science. THE LAST UNDERCLASS is good enough to set people talking about the issues that scare them."
#
THE LAST UNDERCLASS tells a story that has the basic traits for a super movie. Ghosts of '45 Japan's War Legacy and National Purpose【電子書籍】[ Geoffrey E. Hill ]

In Ghosts of 45, Geoffrey E. Hill addresses the great questions revolving around Japans past militarismhow did it get started, why were they so aggressive, why were individuals submissive to authority, what was the reason Japanese felt superior, was American bombing and the atomic bombs really justified, why are the Japanese reluctant to recognize their militaristic past, and what can the Japanese do to emerge from this predominantly negative war legacy.

After World War II, the Japanese people rebuilt their country, established a new government, restored their infrastructure and became a pacifist nation. Despite these profound changes, modern Japan has not been able to achieve a desired national purpose and a leadership standing in the international community.

In Ghosts of 45, Hill examines this problem by exploring the roots and evolution of Japans militaristic period through historical sources and the recollections of people living in wartime Japan. He features in-depth interviews with both well-educated Japanese individuals familiar with Western culture and American POWs subjected to forced labor.

Three narratives are brought together that could help guide Japan toward finding renewed national purpose and international respect: the roots of Japans militarism, the ongoing war legacy, and key principles concerning the status of the emperor and public education about wartime Japan. In addition, Hill discusses comparisons between the emperor and the pope, the samurai code and the code of the English knights during the Middle Ages, and the beliefs that allowed Japanese wartime brutality and American slavery.

Luda is a woman of the Great Plains, a horsewoman and hunter, revered by fearsome Indians for her strength and courage. After harrowing experiences during the Civil War as a surgical nurse, she decides to live the life of a recluse. Surviving off her wits, Luda hunts, choosing to vanquish her prey with inordinate strength, quick hands and a sharp knife - except when she needs a beast of burden. Then the prey is captured, forced into submission and bound into humiliating subjugations utilizing among her many means of torture, cruel piercings and body modifications. What better beast of burden than the human male, she decides, as he is easily captured and trained by a superior female. Luda has no difficulty extracting unending servitude from her captives as she moves her camp hundreds of miles south to her winter haven. The entourage includes Luda's life long companion, her neutered servant who, envious of the intact male, insures that the captured beast perform and labor without respite. In his first period piece, Chris Bellows writes of a fascinatingly dominant woman in unusual circumstances, creating a riveting story entwined with explicit D/s encounters and provocative depictions of male submission.
Humanity’s greatest minds have ensconced themselves in a tower of intellect. Inside, an everlasting colloquium promises to emerge with the best blueprint for a global utopia. But the big brains of these isolationists come at a cost: the sardonic pygmoids stand no higher than four feet.

That cost has just skyrocketed. When a fire threatens to wipe out the apogee of human genius, Bryson, a low-level utopianist, must escape the tower with humankind’s only formula for advancement. Under the direction and scorn of his mordant superior, Palmer, he must also carry the humiliation of using dreaded labor and puny muscle to crawl free. Trammeled in the tower’s garbage chute, Bryson faces an even greater heat than the flames rising all around him: the hauteur and pomposity of his insolent peers.

Get “Opposite Land” now and watch the deserving destruction of sinecure, the ultimate reversal of The Fox and the Grapes.

Resurrecting Marx Analytical Marxists on Exploitation, Freedom and Justice【電子書籍】[ David Gordon ]

The last two decades have seen Marxism's academic renascence. In fields as diverse as law, literary criticism, history, and philosophy, Marxism once again captivates no small number of scholars. In part, this reassessment is driven by the efforts of a group of philosophers and economists to reconstruct Marx from the ground up on a more rigorous basis. The work of these "Analytical Marxists" ー who include G.A. Cohen, Jon Elster, and John Roemer ー is given a sustained examination and critique in David Gordon's Resurrecting Marx.

The charge of the Analytical Marxists that capitalism is inherently exploitative and unjust is the primary subject of Gordon's book. Gordon takes issue with that contention; he argues that the Analytical Marxists' withering criticism of classical Marxism is essentially correct, but that they fail to replace it with a superior theoretical edifice. Gordon also analyzes the Analytical Marxists' reformulation of the Marxian notion of exploitation, the implications of their rejection of the labor theory of value, their differences over what rights people have, and their arguments for the compatibility of markets with socialism.

Sex in Education【電子書籍】[ Edward H. Clarke ]

"Is there any thing better in a State than that both women and men be rendered the very best? There is not."ーPlato.
It is idle to say that what is right for man is wrong for woman. Pure reason, abstract right and wrong, have nothing to do with sex: they neither recognize nor know it. They teach that what is right or wrong for man is equally right and wrong for woman. Both sexes are bound by the same code of morals; both are amenable to the same divine law. Both have a right to do the best they can; or, to speak more justly, both should feel the duty, and have the opportunity, to do their best. Each must justify its existence by becoming a complete development of manhood and womanhood; and each should refuse whatever limits or dwarfs that development.

The problem of woman's sphere, to use the modern phrase, is not to be solved by applying to it abstract principles of right and wrong. Its solution must be obtained from physiology, not from ethics or metaphysics. The question must be submitted to Agassiz and Huxley, not to Kant or Calvin, to Church or Pope. Without denying the self-evident proposition, that whatever a woman can do, she has a right to do, the question at once arises, What can she do? And this includes the further question, What can she best do? A girl can hold a plough, and ply a needle, after a fashion. If she can do both better than a man, she ought to be both farmer and seamstress; but if, on the whole, her husband can hold best the plough, and she ply best the needle, they should divide the labor. He should be master of the plough, and she mistress of the loom. The qu?stio vexata of woman's sphere will be decided by her organization. This limits her power, and reveals her divinely-appointed tasks, just as man's organization limits his power, and reveals his work. In the development of the organization is to be found the way of strength and power for both sexes. Limitation or abortion of development leads both to weakness and failure.

Neither is there any such thing as inferiority or superiority in this matter. Man is not superior to woman, nor woman to man. The relation of the sexes is one of equality, not of better and worse, or of higher and lower. By this it is not intended to say that the sexes are the same. They are different, widely different from each other, and so different that each can do, in certain directions, what the other cannot; and in other directions, where both can do the same things, one sex, as a rule, can do them better than the other; and in still other matters they seem to be so nearly alike, that they can interchange labor without perceptible difference. All this is so well known, that it would be useless to refer to it, were it not that much of the discussion of the irrepressible woman-question, and many of the efforts for bettering her education and widening her sphere, seem to ignore any difference of the sexes; seem to treat her as if she were identical with man, and to be trained in precisely the same way; as if her organization, and consequently her function, were masculine, not feminine. There are those who write and act as if their object were to assimilate woman as much as possible to man, by dropping all that is distinctively feminine out of her, and putting into her as large an amount of masculineness as possible. These persons tacitly admit the error just alluded to, that woman is inferior to man, and strive to get rid of the inferiority by making her a man. There may be some subtle physiological basis for such viewsーsome strange quality of brain; for some who hold and advocate them are of those, who, having missed the symmetry and organic balance that harmonious development yields, have drifted into an hermaphroditic condition. One of this class, who was glad to have escaped the chains of matrimony, but knew the value and lamented the loss of maternity, wished she had been born a widow with two children. These misconceptions arise from mistaking difference of organization and function for difference of position in the scale of being, which is equivalent to saying that man is rated higher in the divine order because he has more muscle, and woman lower because she has more fat. The loftiest ideal of humanity, rejecting all comparisons of inferiority and superiority between the sexes, demands that each shall be perfect in its kind, and not be hindered in its best work. The lily is not inferior to the rose, nor the oak superior to the clover: yet the glory of the lily is one, and the glory of the oak is another; and the use of the oak is not the use of the clover. That is poor horticulture which would train them all alike.

The Days of My Life: An Autobiography【電子書籍】[ Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Days of My Life: An Autobiography【電子書籍】[ Margaret Oliphant Wilson Oliphant ]

I WAS going home from the village, and it was an autumn evening, just after sunset, when every crop was cut and housed in our level country, and when the fields of stubble and browned grass had nothing on them, except here and there, a tree. They say our bare flats, in Cambridgeshire, are neither picturesque, nor beautiful. I cannot say for thatーbut I know no landscape has ever caught my eye like the long line of sunburnt, wiry grass, and the great, wide arch above, with all its shades of beautiful color. There were no hedgerows to skirt the path on which I was, and I saw nothing between me and the sky, save a solitary figure stalking along the highway, and in the other direction the clump of trees which surrounded Cottiswoode; the sky, in the west, was still full of the colors of the sunset, and from the horizon it rose upward in a multitude of tints and shades, the orange and red melting into a rosy flush which contrasted for a while, and then fell into the sweet, calm, peaceful tone of the full blue. In the time of the year, and the look of the night, there was alike that indescribable composure and satisfaction which are in the sunny evenings after harvest; the work was done, the day was fading, everything was going home; the rooks sailed over the sky, and the laborer trudged across the moor. Labor was over, and provision made, and the evening and the night, peace and refreshment, and rest were coming for every man. I do not suppose I noticed this at the time, but I have the strongest impression of it all in my remembrance now. And I was passing along, as I always did, quickly and, perhaps, with a firmer and a steadier step than was usual to girls of my years, swinging in my hand a bit of briony, which, for the sake of its beautiful berries, I was carrying home, but which stood a good chance of being destroyed before we got thereーnot taking leisure to look much about me, thinking of nothing particular, with a little air of the superior, the lady of the manor, in my independent carriageーa little pride of proprietorship in my firm footstep.

Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life【電子書籍】[ Alpheus Thomas Mason ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life【電子書籍】[ Alpheus Thomas Mason ]

“There can be no question that [*Brandeis: A Free Man’s Life*] is a triumph of research and organization, clear, precise and comprehensive. Mr. Mason has quoted copiously from Brandeis’ speeches, letters and judicial opinions. He has delved deeply into corporation finances and legal technicalities. One could not reasonably ask for more information about Brandeis than Mr. Mason has assembled...” ー Orville Prescott,?***The New York Times***

“Professor Mason has written more than an authoritative record and interpretation of what he calls in his suggestive subtitle ‘A Free Man’s Life.’ This stimulating, highly readable book is also a chronicle of the processes of American democracy at work. This is a biography with a larger meaning ー on all counts, it deserves a wide audience.” ー Harvey Bresler,?***The New York Times***

“In a great biography the author has done full justice to a great man ー and given it a symbolism that makes it virtually a composite of American social history during a half century. Rooted in years of study, evidenced by previous publications on Brandeis, the biographer reveals to his readers Louis Brandeis, the people’s lawyer who became a Justice of the Supreme Court. He has done a magnificent job, covering every phase of his life, with main focus on his professional and public service, but with enough of his personal life, enough of his friends ー and his enemies ー and the personalities who crossed his path, enough of anecdote and minor incident, to give the book- and its subject ー lasting vitality.” ー?***Kirkus Reviews***

“[Brandeis’] life, as Professor Mason recounts it, was an unending series of causes and campaigns. He threw himself into them with gusto. He said of himself that he ‘would rather fight than eat.’... [Brandeis] was indeed a great man, as Mr. Mason’s biography makes clear. It is primarily a public and political biography; the intimate man is implied rather than described. But Professor Mason within the limits he has set has done a splendid job of research; he has told the story in great detail with care, precision, and detachment... He has done well to quote copiously from Brandeis who spoke and wrote with verve and with an eye to education and action.” ー Louis L. Jaffe, University of Chicago Law Review

“[A] superior, full-length biography... [Brandeis] was the arch foe of monopoly in industry, stood out against the closed shop in labor relations, and had no faith in socialism. Always, as Professor Mason stresses again and again, his method was to achieve complete mastery of the facts in relation to any problem in which he became interested and then to promote what he deemed to be sound solutions, enlisting aid in every conceivable quarter; keeping up a stream of advocacy and comment, signed and unsigned; stimulating others to do likewise; and giving of his substance as well as of his time and energy to almost every cause he attacked-leaving nothing to chance and no stone unturned. All this as a private citizen, while practicing law in the city of Boston... All hail... to Professor Mason for presenting us with this full length history of the embodiment of a living ideal. Into it have gone exhaustive study of the correspondence and documents and firsthand knowledge of the subject. This book will undoubtedly be widely read, as it should be; and as it is read, the Brandeis influence will be strengthened and prolonged in American life. Such a work is a major contribution to society, as well as a source of unending pleasure to the reader.” ー Ralph F.
Rebel gives a rare insight on how it all began. Two teens recruited to fight a revolution that prompted Martial Law in the Philippines, fight to keep each other in the raging political and cultural transformation brought by the late 60’s. They were members of Kabataang Makabayan, a student organization founded at the University of the Philippines. What started as a small group took on the mission to teach all sectors that there is more to politics than voting on elections. It identified the ills of society, explained the roots and organized the struggle for a socialist alternative. It was a subversive idea today and more so in 1964. The KM members multiplied in UP Diliman Chapter. Some enrolled in other universities for the main purpose of building other chapters. Soon there was UEKM Chapter, FEUKM Chapter, etc. Some members were assigned to the labor sector, coordinating between unions and building new ones. The Kilusang Mayo Uno or (KMU) was born. Other members were assigned to the divided and disorganized transport sector. In a matter of time, jeepney strikes were demanding and winning fare hikes. Students who could have had a good life died or wasted their years in jail or in hiding. “Let every person be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. Therefore, whoever opposes the authority has taken a stand against the arrangement of God; those who have taken a stand against it will bring judgment against themselves.” (Romans 13:1-2)

The Story of Norway【電子書籍】[ Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen ]

The Norsemen are a Germanic race, and belong, accordingly, to the great Aryan family. Their next of kin are the Swedes and Danes. Their original home was Asia, and probably that part of Asia which the ancients called Bactria, near the sources of the rivers Oxus and Jaxartes. Not only the Norsemen are supposed to have come from this region, but the ancestors of all the Aryan nations which now inhabit the greater portion of the civilized world. Among the first to leave this cradle of nations were the tribes which settled upon the eastern islands and peninsulas of the Mediterranean, and, under the name of Hellenes, developed, long before the Christian era, an art and a literature which are, in some respects, yet unrivalled. The early Italic tribes, from which sprung in time the world-empire of Rome, trace their descent from the same ancestry; as do also the Kelts, who in ancient times inhabited England, Ireland, and France; the Slavs who settled in the present Russia, Bohemia, and the northern Turkish provinces; and the Germans, who occupied the great central regions of the European continent. Among Asiatic nations, the Iranians inhabiting Persia, and the Hindoos in India, have Aryan blood. It seems almost incredible that persons differing so widely in appearance, habits, and disposition, as, for instance, a Hindoo and an Englishman, should, if you go sufficiently far back, have the same ancestry. And yet there cannot be the slightest doubt that such is the case. The question, then, naturally arises: "If they were once alike, what can have made them so different?" And the answer is: "The climate, the soil, and the general character of the countries in which they settled." The country from which the first Aryans emigrated was mountainous, with fertile valleys, and an even, temperate climate. There was no excessive heat to make men drowsy and indolent, nor excessive cold to stunt them in their growth and paralyze their energies. The earth did not, as in the tropics, produce a luxurious vegetation which would support the inhabitants without labor, but it offered sustenance to herds of cattle which, with the proper care, would supply the simple needs of primitive men. The race, thus situated, progressed physically as well as mentally, until it became superior to all the tribes inhabiting the neighboring regions. War followed, in which the weaker succumbed. The Aryans, increasing rapidly in numbers, took possession of the conquered territories, enslaved the indigenous population, or drove it back into localities where the conditions of life were less favorable. It is not positively known when the first migration on a large scale took place; but some scholars have supposed that the Hindoos separated from the parent race as early as 1500 B.C. The dates of the Greek, Italic, Keltic, and Slavic migrations are likewise uncertain, and the period which has been fixed upon for the Aryan occupation of Germany is also conjectural. The same uncertainty prevails regarding the earliest history of the Scandinavian tribes; although there is a strong probability that their invasion of the countries which they now inhabit must have taken place during the second century preceding the Christian era. It is not unlikely that they left their Asiatic home simultaneously with the Germans, with whom they were then almost, if not entirely, identical, and that their conquering hordes spread northward, subduing the Finns and Lapps, whom they found in possession of the land, partly exterminating them, partly forcing them up into the barren mountains of the extreme North.

The Poisoned Table A Novel【電子書籍】[ Diane Michael Cantor ]

THE POISONED TABLE portrays a passionate rivalry between fictional actress Isabel Graves and real-life Shakespearian stage sensation Frances Anne “Fanny” Kemble. In this tale of ambition, romance, and betrayal, Graves harbors early resentment, convinced that Kemble’s family theatre connections assured Fanny’s selection for the lead role in Romeo and Juliet despite Isabel’s superior beauty and talent. The novel traces their unconnected adventures and acting careers in the Old and New Worlds, as well as their introduction to the horrors of American slavery and to romance with one of the wealthiest men in America, Pierce Butler, owner of Georgia cotton and rice plantations and master of more than 800 slaves. Kemble, an ardent abolitionist, falls in love with Butler and marries him before she discovers his wealth derives soley from slave labor. Though glad to be separated from plantation life at her husband’s Philadelphia home, Kemble agrees to accompany him on his annual visit to inspect his Georgia investments. Butler assures his wife her apprehensions about slavery will be assuaged once she sees firsthand its humane daily operation. Instead, she is sickened and chronicles her visit in Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839. This account, published in England in 1863, is sometimes credited with dissuading Britain from aiding the Confederacy. Within the novel is a play written by Graves’ lover. Set on a slave plantation, the plot portrays a dinner at the master’s table and the poisonous conditions which produce its bounty, resulting in an attempted murder. In the controversy following this play’s opening night, Kemble and Graves are again at odds, and their rivalry continues as they change places on the stage of theatre and of life.

With the development of the aging society and the increased importance of emergency risk management in recent years, a large number of medical care challenges - advancing medical treatments, care & support, pharmacological treatments, greater health awareness, emergency treatments, telemedical treatment and care, the introduction of electronic charts, and rising costs - are emerging as social issues throughout the whole world. Hospitals and other medical institutions must develop and maintain superior management to achieve systems that can provide better medical care, welfare and health while enabling "support innovation." Key medical care, welfare and health industries play a crucial role in this, but also of importance are management innovation models that enable "collaborative innovation" by closely linking diverse fields such as ICT, energy, electric equipment, machinery and transport.

Looking across different industries, Collaborative Innovation offers new knowledge and insights on the extraordinary value and increasing necessity of collaboration across different organizations in improving the health and lives of people. It breaks new ground with its research theme of building "health support ecosystems," focusing on protecting people through collaborative innovation. An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

One of the most influential works of its era on the subject of population growth Thomas Malthus's "An Essay on the Principle of Population" was first published anonymously in 1798. In it Malthus describes his "Iron Law of Population" which asserts that growing populations ultimately lead to a rising supply of labor that would inevitably lower wages and create an increasing rate of poverty. More specifically Malthus argues "The power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race." In other words while population has the capacity to grow at an exponential rate the resources that support mans existence, i.e. food and shelter, can only grow at an algebraic rate. While ultimately time would prove Malthus's predictions to be wrong, for they did not foresee the impact of technology on productivity, the work was nonetheless highly influential to both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in developing the theory of natural selection. The work would also stir the debate around the impact of population growth and lead to the first national census laws in Britain.
