After publishing our first book, teachers loved it so much they wanted more words. Just like the first book students no longer have to try to memorize long boring vocabulary lists by using archaic rote memory techniques. Vocabulary Cartoons II makes learning vocabulary fun and easy by using brain-friendly memory aids in the form of visual and rhyming mnemonics. A mnemonic is a device used to improve memory. It helps you remember something by associating it with something you already know. Mnemonic devices have been used in many forms including keywords, acronyms, rhymes, poems, songs and visual aids. For example, you may remember this mnemonic from grade school, "Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety-two." This helps you remember when Chistopher Columbus discovered America. Vocabulary Cartoons incorporates a visual and rhyming mnemonic for every vocabulary word. Students learned 72% more words with 90% retention in actual school tests. This book is a must for visual learners, ADD, ESE and all college bound students. Excellent teaching resource for improving standardized test scores like the common core, SAT, and ACT. All 290 words found in this book are taken from SAT and ACT word lists and after every ten words there is a matching and fill-in-the-blank review quiz. Recommended for 7th - 12th grade students.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

"Destined to become an adventure classic." ーAnchorage Daily News

Hailed as "gripping" (New York Times) and "beautiful" (Washington Post), The Adventurer's Son is Roman Dial’s extraordinary and widely acclaimed account of his two-year quest to unravel the mystery of his son’s disappearance in the jungles of Costa Rica.

In the predawn hours of July 10, 2014, the twenty-seven-year-old son of preeminent Alaskan scientist and National Geographic Explorer Roman Dial, walked alone into Corcovado National Park, an untracked rainforest along Costa Rica’s remote Pacific Coast that shelters miners, poachers, and drug smugglers. He carried a light backpack and machete. Before he left, Cody Roman Dial emailed his father: “I am not sure how long it will take me, but I’m planning on doing 4 days in the jungle and a day to walk out. I’ll be bounded by a trail to the west and the coast everywhere else, so it should be difficult to get lost forever.”

They were the last words Dial received from his son.

As soon as he realized Cody Roman’s return date had passed, Dial set off for Costa Rica. As he trekked through the dense jungle, interviewing locals and searching for cluesーthe authorities suspected murderーthe desperate father was forced to confront the deepest questions about himself and his own role in the events. Roman had raised his son to be fearless, to be at home in earth’s wildest places, travelling together through rugged Alaska to remote Borneo and Bhutan. Was he responsible for his son’s fate? Or, as he hoped, was Cody Roman safe and using his wilderness skills on a solo adventure from which he would emerge at any moment?

Part detective story set in the most beautiful yet dangerous reaches of the planet, The Adventurer’s Son emerges as a far deeper tale of discoveryーa journey to understand the truth about those we love the most.

The Adventurer’s Son includes fifty black-and-white photographs.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Course in the Calculus of Variations Optimization, Regularity, and Modeling【電子書籍】[ Filippo Santambrogio ]

This book provides an introduction to the broad topic of the calculus of variations. It addresses the most natural questions on variational problems and the mathematical complexities they present.

Beginning with the scientific modeling that motivates the subject, the book then tackles mathematical questions such as the existence and uniqueness of solutions, their characterization in terms of partial differential equations, and their regularity. It includes both classical and recent results on one-dimensional variational problems, as well as the adaptation to the multi-dimensional case. Here, convexity plays an important role in establishing semi-continuity results and connections with techniques from optimization, and convex duality is even used to produce regularity results. This is then followed by the more classical H?lder regularity theory for elliptic PDEs and some geometric variational problems on sets, including the isoperimetric inequality andthe Steiner tree problem. The book concludes with a chapter on the limits of sequences of variational problems, expressed in terms of Γ-convergence.

While primarily designed for master's-level and advanced courses, this textbook, based on its author's instructional experience, also offers original insights that may be of interest to PhD students and researchers. A foundational understanding of measure theory and functional analysis is required, but all the essential concepts are reiterated throughout the book using special memo-boxes.

When a bomb kills the most popular man at Harvard, the entire faculty is suspect

An explosion rocks the foundations of Harvard University’s stately Memorial Hall. Built a century ago to honor alumni who died defending the Union in the Civil War, the hall is a focal point of the campus. Now it is a crime scene. A corpulent body is found inside, decapitated by the blast. The dead man is Hamilton Dow, conductor of the school orchestra and one of the most beloved men on campus. The university’s president, James Cheever, couldn’t be more pleased.

Dow had opposed every one of Cheever’s attempts to improve and enlarge Harvard, and this terrible accident means that Cheever’s path to complete domination of the campus is clear. But was it an accident? Homer Kelly, Harvard professor and occasional sleuth, is not so sure. Cheever was not the only man on campus who wanted Dow dead, and as Homer looks for the culprit he finds a terrible secret behind the bombing that turned the Civil War memorial into a tomb.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Back Channel A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for Its Renewal【電子書籍】[ William J. Burns ]

“A masterful diplomatic memoir” (The Washington Post) from CIA director and career ambassador William J. Burns, from his service under five presidents to his personal encounters with Vladimir Putin and other world leadersーan impassioned argument for the enduring value of diplomacy in an increasingly volatile world.

Over the course of more than three decades as an American diplomat, William J. Burns played a central role in the most consequential diplomatic episodes of his timeーfrom the bloodless end of the Cold War to the collapse of post?Cold War relations with Putin’s Russia, from post?9/11 tumult in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Middle East to the secret nuclear talks with Iran.

In The Back Channel, Burns recounts, with novelistic detail and incisive analysis, some of the seminal moments of his career. Drawing on a trove of newly declassified cables and memos, he gives readers a rare inside look at American diplomacy in action. His dispatches from war-torn Chechnya and Qaddafi’s bizarre camp in the Libyan desert and his warnings of the “Perfect Storm” that would be unleashed by the Iraq War will reshape our understanding of historyーand inform the policy debates of the future. Burns sketches the contours of effective American leadership in a world that resembles neither the zero-sum Cold War contest of his early years as a diplomat nor the “unipolar moment” of American primacy that followed.

Ultimately, The Back Channel is an eloquent, deeply informed, and timely story of a life spent in service of American interests abroad. It is also a powerful reminder, in a time of great turmoil, of the enduring importance of diplomacy.

My parents started using that word about a year agoー“one day, you’ll take a trip to be with us. Like an adventure.”

Javier Zamora’s adventure is a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks.

At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents’ arms, snuggling in bed between them, and living under the same roof again. He cannot foresee the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.

A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.

Beloved actor Michael J. Fox shares his personal, poignant account of what it's like to be told you have an eighty-year-old's diseaseーat age thirty.

"Life is great. Sometimes, though, you just have to put up with a little more crap."

In September 1998, Michael J. Fox stunned the world by announcing he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's diseaseーa degenerative neurological condition. In fact, he had been secretly fighting it for seven years. The worldwide response was staggering. Fortunately, he had accepted the diagnosis and by the time the public started grieving for him, he had stopped grieving for himself. Now, with the same passion, humor, and energy that Fox has invested in his performances, he tells the story of his life, his career, and his campaign to find a cure for Parkinson's.

Combining his trademark ironic sensibility and keen sense of the absurd, he recounts his lifeーfrom his childhood in a small town in western Canada to his meteoric rise in film and television which made him a worldwide celebrity. Most importantly however, he writes of the last 10 years, during whichーwith the unswerving support of his wife, family, and friendsーhe has dealt with his illness. He talks about what Parkinson's has given him: the chance to appreciate a wonderful life and career, and the opportunity to help search for a cure and spread public awareness of the disease. He is a very lucky man, indeed.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation

Michael J. Fox is donating the profits from his book to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which is dedicated to fast-forwarding the cure for Parkinson's disease. The Foundation will move aggressively to identify the most promising research and raise the funds to assure that a cure is found for the millions of people living with this disorder. The Foundation's web site, MichaelJFox.org, carries the latest pertinent information about Parkinson's disease, including:

A detailed description of Parkinson's disease

How you can help find the cure

Public Services Announcements that are aired on network and cable television stations across the country to increase awareness

Upcoming related Parkinson's disease events and meetings

Updates on recent research and developments

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Acid for the Children A Memoir【電子書籍】[ Flea ]

With "virtuosic vulnerability" (The Atlantic), the iconic bassist and Red Hot Chili peppers co-founder pens a love letter to a youth spent wild in Los Angeles in his raw and riveting coming-of-age memoir.

In Acid for the Children, Flea takes readers on a deeply personal and revealing tour of his formative years, spanning from Australia to the New York City suburbs to, finally, Los Angeles. Through hilarious anecdotes, poetical meditations, and occasional flights of fantasy, Flea deftly chronicles the experiences that forged him as an artist, a musician, and a young man. His dreamy, jazz-inflected prose makes the Los Angeles of the 1970s and 80s come to gritty, glorious life, including the potential for fun, danger, mayhem, or inspiration that lurked around every corner. It is here that young Flea, looking to escape a turbulent home, found family in a community of musicians, artists, and junkies who also lived on the fringe. He spent most of his time partying and committing petty crimes. But it was in music where he found a higher meaning, a place to channel his frustration, loneliness, and love. This left him open to the life-changing moment when he and his best friends, soul brothers, and partners-in-mischief came up with the idea to start their own band, which became the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Acid for the Children is the debut of a stunning new literary voice, whose prose is as witty, entertaining, and wildly unpredictable as the author himself. It's a tenderly evocative coming-of-age story and a raucous love letter to the power of music and creativity from one of the most renowned musicians of our time.

New York Times Bestseller

A #1 LA Times Bestseller

A USA Today Bestseller

One of NPR's "Favorite Books of 2019"

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Cosmos in Ancient Greek Religious Experience Sacred Space, Memory, and Cognition【電子書籍】[ Efrosyni Boutsikas ]

In this book, Efrosyni Boutsikas examines ancient Greek religious performances, intricately orchestrated displays comprising topography, architecture, space, cult, and myth. These various elements were unified in a way that integrated the body within cosmic space and made the sacred extraordinary. Boutsikas also explores how natural light or the night-sky may have assisted in intensifying the experience of these rituals, and how they may have determined ancient perceptions of the cosmos. The author's digital and virtual reconstructions of ancient skyscapes and religious structures during such occurrences unveil a deeper understanding of the importance of time and place in religious experience. Boutsikas shows how they shaped emotions, cosmological beliefs, and ritual memory of the participants. Her study revolutionises our understanding on ancient emotionality and cognitive experience, demonstrating how Greek religious spaces were vibrant arenas of a shared experience of the cosmos.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Business English Writing: Effective Business Writing Tips and Will Help You Write Better and More Effectively at Work【電子書籍】[ Mary G. Lewis ]

Everyone wants to know the "who-what-when-where-why-how-how much" immediately, in the first sentence.

They need to make decisions. When they read documents, they want to know the important things immediately.

They want to know objectives, means of measurement, costs, and returns on those investments.

They want to see that information in the first sentences. Good business writing is more about clear thinking than it is about writing style.

Writing can only be as good as the thinking that precedes it.

You must know what you want to say, what your objective is in saying it, and why it's important for your audience to read it.

Organizing a writing project is very similar to organizing a presentation. The good writer is just as aware of his/her audience as a good public speaker is. After you have organized and outlined the subject of your memo, report, or letter, you should have a clear idea of your main focus.

Focus in your business report or memo is your objectiveーit is the "why" of why you are bothering to write at all. Most business writing has its purpose buried.

There is no focus, no goal, no call for action, and no desired end result. If you do not provide the focus, you force your reader to ask questions about your message which you should have answered before sitting down at your word processor. Knowing your audience will help you to organize your material so that it has the best chance of being read and understood. Put yourself in your reader's shoesーlisten, and you will be better received.

This book will show you how to write business messages clearly, concisely and simply. It will encourage you to write conversationally, the way you talk, and to write with humanity; that is, from one person to another.
