【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Letters from the Greatest Generation Writing Home in WWII【電子書籍】[ Howard H. Peckham ]

A collection of personal letters from overseas that reveal in day-to-day detail what it was like to serve in World War II.

Recounting victory and defeat, love and loss, this is a remarkable and frank collection of World War II letters penned by American men and women serving overseas.

Here, the hopes and dreams of the greatest generation fill each page, and their voices ring loud and clear. "It's all part of the game but it's bloody and rough," writes one soldier to his wife. "Wearing two stripes now and as proud as an old cat with five kittens," remarks another. Yet, as many countries rejoiced on V-E Day, this book reveals that soldiers were "too tired and sad to celebrate."

Filled with the everyday thoughts of these fighters, the letters are by turns heartbreaking and amusing, revealing and frightening. While visiting a German concentration camp, one man wrote, "I don't like Army life but I'm glad we are here to stop these atrocities." Meanwhile, in another letter a soldier quips, "I know lice don't crawl so I figured they were fleas." A fitting tribute to all veterans, this book brings the experience of warーits dramatic horrors, its dreary hardships, its desperate hope for a better futureーto vivid life.

"An intimate portrait of the mundane and remarkable, of heroism and terror, of friendship and loss . . . Timely, compelling, and important reading."ーMatthew L. Basso, author of Men at Work

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Belly of the Beast A POW's Inspiring True Story of Faith, Courage, and Survival Aboard the Infamous WWII Japanese Hell Ship Oryoku Maru【電子書籍】[ Judith L. Pearson ]

**"A searing tribute . . . [to] America in its bleakest hour" (Sen. John McCain, New York Times?bestselling author of Faith of My Fathers).

On December 13, 1944, POW Estel Myers was herded aboard the Japanese prison ship, the Oryoku Maru, with more than sixteen hundred other American captives. More than eleven hundred of them would be dead by journey's end . . .

The son of a Kentucky sharecropper and an enlistee in the navy's medical corps, Myers arrived in Manila shortly before the bombings of Pearl Harbor and the other six targets of the Imperial Japanese military. While he and his fellow corpsmen tended to the bloody tide of soldiers pouring into their once peaceful naval hospital, the Japanese overwhelmed the Pacific islands, capturing seventy-eight thousand POWs by April 1942. Myers was one of the first captured.

After a brutal three-year encampment, Myers and his fellow POWs were forced onto an enemy hell ship bound for Japan. Suffocation, malnutrition, disease, dehydration, infestation, madness, and complete despair claimed the lives of nearly three quarters of those who boarded "the beast."

Myers survived.

A compelling account of a rarely recorded event in military history, this is more than Myers's true storyーthis is an homage to the unfailing courage of men at war, an inspiring chronicle of self-sacrifice and endurance, and a tribute to the power of faith, the strength of the soul, and the triumph of the human spirit.

"An inspiring look at one of World War II's darkest hours." ーJames Bradley, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Flags of our Fathers and Flyboys

"A searing chronicle." ー Kirkus Reviews

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mickey - America's Journey Before, During & After WWII Pacific Theater【電子書籍】[ Merlin L Madsen ]

This book follows a chronology from the late 1920’s and 1930’s when Americans suffered through the depression, unemployment (hitting historic highs of 25% in 1933), and the dust bowl cycling for six years in the 1930’s affecting almost 80% of America. We follow Germany’s rise to power and Japan’s rise to power with the eventual bombing of Pearl Harbor which led to America’s triggering matters of incarceration and rationing at home. Shown are America's ingenuity, technological advances, manufacturing might, productivity gains, logistical solutions and the cohesiveness of the American spirit which were collectively decisive to the Allied victory in World War II.

Mickey’s journey (my Dad) started with his parents moving five times during the early years looking for work and a place they could raise their family. I have you follow America’s challenges at home during the 1930’s, the Allies progression of battles and victories against Japan, including my Dad’s path, in the Pacific islands with the eventual surrender of Japan. The Japanese strategy turned into a defensive posture as they attempted to delay the Allied advance to Japan as long as possible from north of Australia zigzagging and fighting throughout the Pacific to the Land of the Rising Sun.

After the war, soldiers head home to a normalcy that takes some longer than others to adjust. Some never do adjust.

This book is much more than dates, locations, and body counts. Merlin has chronologically included: The Before; depression, unemployment, dust bowl, food shortages, technological advances. The During; incarceration and rationing in America, effects on island natives, Americans coming together for the war effort, manufacturing ingenuity, unbearable climate and disease overseas, shell shock, island terrain, strategies and battles of both Allies and Japanese in the air, on the water, and on land. The After; the changing global and U.S. economy, coming home and reestablishing a person’s roots, starting and enjoying family, determining where to live and work.

The remarkable true story of Eugene Fluckey, the US Navy’s most innovativeーand aggressiveーsubmarine commander of World War II

Over the course of five combat patrols during the Pacific War, Commander Fluckey reinvented submarine warfare, pioneering audacious strategies to hunt and sink Japanese warships and merchant vessels. At the helm of the USS Barb, he directed his boat to attack warship convoysーnever mind the lop-sided oddsーand to slip into heavily defended enemy harbors to launch torpedoes at unsuspecting targets. “Lucky” Fluckey’s submariners often attacked from the surface, brazenly sinking the enemy with the Barb’s deck guns. Once, he even sent sailors ashore on one Japanese island on a perilous mission to blow up a Japanese train. Fluckey and his crew sent an astounding seventeen enemy ships, including an aircraft carrier, to the bottom of the sea.

In Torpedo Run, acclaimed naval historian Don Keith dives into the most thrilling and dangerous tales of Fluckey’s war, as he guides his gallant crew against the Japanese fleet. For his heroism and intrepidity, Fluckey earned four Navy Crosses and the Medal of Honor, and showed what a submarineーand heーwas capable of.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Cigarette Diaries A Personal History of Life in a WWII Prison Camp【電子書籍】[ Frank J. Pratt ]

Army Air Corps 2nd Lieutenant bombardier Frank Pratt was captured by the Germans when his B-24 was shot down near Wadowice, Poland, on September 13, 1944. He spent eight months as a POW at Stalag Luft I outside of Barth, Germany. While there, he kept journals that he wrote mostly on the backs of cigarette packs from Red Cross parcels, bound with cardboard and canvas. Together the three books tell the story of day-to-day life as a prisoner of war in Germany as WWII drew to a close.

Frank J. Pratt was born Oct. 24, 1915, in the then thriving town of Blanchard, Washington. His father, Thomas, worked the lumber camps. His mother, Clara (known to nearly everyone as Dot), ran a boarding house for the workers. Clara died when Frank was nine, leaving him and his father to fend for themselves, as Frank’s three older brothers were already living on their own.

After a year or so his father took off for Seattle, leaving Frank to be raised by his mother’s sister, Aunt Bess, who also lived in Blanchard. For the next few years he divided his time between Aunt Bess and his brother, Loren, in Bellingham, Washington, where he graduated from high school and later attended Western Washington State College.

Music had always been important to Frank, and as a young man he spent a lot of Saturday nights at the local dancehall. He liked the bass fiddle best and spent a lot of time standing in front of the stage just watching. Apparently this caught the attention of the bass player, who eventually struck up a conversation and at the end of the evening offered to let Frank borrow his fiddle. Frank said sure, found a way to get it home (he had no car) and then taught himself to play by strumming along with the radio and favorite phonograph records. The dancehall musician never asked to have his fiddle returned, but apparently he passed Frank’s name along to a local bandleader as one day Frank got a call from a man named Barney, looking for someone to fill in on bass that Saturday night in place of an injured player. Frank was mighty nervous playing his first real gig, but must have passed the test as Barney and the band asked him back for the following Saturday and the following one. Soon he was a full-fledged member of the group. Over the next decade he played steadily with local swing bands before being inducted into the military in 1943 and returned to playing after coming home from the war. He finally hung up his bass for good in the late ’50s. Along with his fiddle playing, Frank worked for a number of years in the service station business, eventually owning two stations of his own.

When the war started Frank was interested in joining the Army Air Corps as an officer candidate and enlisted in the fall of’42, just before his 27th birthday. He completed his training as a bombardier, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Eventually [early April, 1944?] he was sent, via North Africa, to the European theater. [Insert summary of three pages of Book II diary entries here?] From April 20, he and his crew were stationed in Venosa, Italy. (“Life in Combat Theater begins! Hooray.”)

By fall of 1944 Frank’s regular unit had completed all of their missions and most of the men returned to the US. Unfortunately, Frank had developed an ear infection that grounded him for a couple of weeks and he was still completing his makeup flights with other crews when he was shot down on September 13, 1944, over southern Poland, near Wadowice, about thirty kilometers from Krakau. It was Frank’s 43rd mission. His B-24 plane was hit and five of the crew members parachuted out. Six didn’t make it.

When he landed he was picked up by a pitchfork- wielding German on a motorcycle and taken prisoner. Over the next few days he was interrogated and taken by train from Poland through central Germany to a transient camp in Frankfurt. There he was assigned and sent by train once again to Stalag Luft I, a permanent POW camp for American and British officers on the northern peninsula just outside of Barth, Germany.

Shortly after arriving at Stalag Luft I outside of Barth, Frank started keeping a diary. Some of his barracks mates did the same, because there wasn’t much else to do and writing was a good way to pass the time. Paper, however, was fairly hard to come by. One day as Frank was sitting in his barracks it occurred to him that the empty cigarette packs strewn across the floor were made of fairly heavy stock that was blank on one side, and if he trimmed off the torn edges and cut them to a uniform size, they would make good writing paper. So his diaries came to be.

What follows is based on the contents of three separate “books.” Two were made of bound cigarette wrappers and one “blue book” (journals that were supplied to POWs by the YMCA that had blue paper covers). They cover all eight months of Frank’s time as a prisoner of war. Frank’s words have been preserved as far as possible, but his note-like entries have been expanded into a more readable narrative, and some material has been re-arranged to reflect the actual chronology of events.

I’m No Hero: Story of a WWII Soldier

By: Steven E. Weick

Growing up, Steven E. Weick heard very short snippets of his father’s time in World War II. But like many veterans, his father never talked much about his harrowing experiences. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Last Hill The Epic Story of a Ranger Battalion and the Battle That Defined WWII【電子書籍】[ Bob Drury ]

Bob Drury and Tom Clavin's The Last Hill is the incredible untold story of one Ranger battalion's heroism and courage in World War II.

They were known as “Rudder’s Rangers,” the most elite and experienced attack unit in the United States Army. In December 1944, Lt. Col. James Rudder's 2nd Battalion would form the spearhead into Germany, taking the war into Hitler’s homeland at last. In the process, Rudder was given two objectives: Take Hill 400 . . . and hold the hill by any means possible. To the last man, if necessary. The battle-hardened battalion had no idea that several Wehrmacht regiments, who greatly outnumbered the Rangers, had been given the exact same orders. The clash of the two determined forces was one of the bloodiest and most costly encounters of World War II.

Castle Hill, the imposing 1320-foot mini-mountain the American Rangers simply called Hill 400, was the gateway to a desperate Nazi Germany. Several entire American divisions had already been repulsed by the last hill's dug-in defenders asーunknown to the Alliesーthe height was the key to Adolf Hitler's last-minute plans for a massive counterattack to smash through the American lines in what would become known to history as the Battle of the Bulge.

Thus the stalemate surrounding Hill 400 could not continue. For Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, there was only one solution: Call in Rudder's Rangers. Of the 130 special operators who stormed, captured, and held the hill that December day, only 16 remained to stagger back down its frozen slopes. The Last Hill is replete with unforgettable action and charactersーa rich and detailed saga of what the survivors of the 2nd Ranger Battalion would remember as “our longest day.”

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Lighthouse of Stalingrad The Hidden Truth at the Centre of WWII's Greatest Battle【電子書籍】[ Iain MacGregor ]

**'Stunning. History at its very best: a blend of impeccably researched scholarship, genuinely revelatory primary sources, and a beautifully written narrative' - James Holland

'The sheer brutal intimacy of his descriptions of the fighting are extraordinary' - Frederick Taylor

*'*A wonderful and important and timely book' - Alexander Kershaw, New York Times bestselling author of The Bedford Boys and First Wave

'An authoritative and unforgettable insight into the decisive days of that most terrible struggle on the banks of the Volga' - Jonathan Dimbleby

'An utterly gripping read' - James Holland

'MacGregor writes with great fluency and narrative drive . . . compellingly terse' - William Boyd

'Magisterial' - Dan Snow**

The sacrifices that enabled the Soviet Union to defeat Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-45 are sacrosanct. The foundation of their eventual victory was laid during the battle for the city of Stalingrad, resting on the banks of the river Volga. For Germany, the catastrophic defeat was the beginning of their eventual demise that would see the Red Army two years later flying their flag of victory above the Reichstag. Stalingrad is seen as the pivotal battle of the Second World War, with over two million civilians and combatants either killed, wounded or captured during the bitter winter of September 1942. Both sides endured terrible conditions in brutal house-to-house fighting reminiscent of the Great War.

Within this life-and-death struggle for the heart of the city and situated on the frontline was a key strategic building, codenamed: 'The Lighthouse'. Here, a small garrison of Red Army guardsmen withstood German aerial bombardments and fought off daily assaults of infantry and armour. Red Army newspaper reports at the time would be seized upon by the Moscow media needing to place a positive spin on the fighting that had at one point looked beyond salvation. By the end of the war, the story of this building would gather further momentum to inspire Russians to rebuild their destroyed towns and cities until it became the legend it is today, renamed after the simple sergeant who had supposedly led the defence - 'Pavlov's House'.

In time for the eightieth anniversary, The Lighthouse of Stalingrad will shed fresh insight on this iconic battle through the prism of the men who fought one another over five months and the officers who commanded them. A riveting narrative, informed by both German and Russian archives to unearth unpublished memoirs and eyewitness testimonies from veterans and civilians alike, this book will celebrate the real heroes and provide a truer picture of how this mighty battle finally ended.

Back in the 80s, Nintendo ruled the home-entertainment market with the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). But then rival Sony introduced PlayStation, which featured advancements and cutting-edge technology that put Nintendo's Super-NES to shame. Nintendo quickly lost its dominant market share to Sony and found itself floundering. In 2006, Nintendo released Wii at the same time Sony introduced its highly-anticipated and much-vaunted PlayStation III and Microsoft's XBox 360. Wii's David defeated PlayStation's Goliath, inversely echoing the SNES/PlayStation outcome of a decade previous. Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars is the story of what went right, discussing the business strategies and marketing savvy that took on the mighty Sony and won.

Topics include:
How where you put your company is just as important as how you run it: being in Kyoto
From work force to policies, why Nintendo's "just enough" attitude succeeds
Why the ability to read a balance sheet is overrated
Respect seniority but approve huge R&D budgets for talented junior employees
Allowing maximum communication between disparate divisions (hardware and software)
Enlarging the pie: going after casual gamers (The art of mainstreaming)
How the Wii will be the next major household appliance and the DSi will be the cell phone of the future.

Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars should serve as a warning to similar powerhouse industries never to understimate the modest competitor. It should occupy the bookshelf of any business person smart enough to know they don't need to be a giant to win.

On a sunny day in May of 2007, my friend, Russell Wilson, who told me about a family seeing sasquatch just outside of town. I was immediately taken by the thought that they might exist and I became obsessed with the idea of finding out for myself.

After four years of searching, we had found nothing more than one possible sixteen-inch print. I was feeling discouraged and was beginning to have the thought that it was time to quit when I experienced a strong odor and heard three very distinct knocks not far away. That incident renewed my enthusiasm and was the first of what has become frequent interaction with sasquatch.

At my core, I'm just a curious being. It is as simple as that. I have always wanted to know the secrets of the universe. It turns out that I was chosen for this, perhaps before birth. Perhaps that is why I was born different and with a sense of wonder about the realm we live in and beyond.

Am I superior? No, just different. We all shine with our own light. The truth is most don't realize they are on fire. Everyone one of us are part of this universal fire and it is part of us. We all participate in the manifestation of our reality. You could call it God and I would be fine with that.

I have gone from atheist to very spiritual during this journey. That is because I have been shown and felt very unique experiences that have converted me to my current beliefs. The entities I've interacted with would tell you that I was not easy to convince. They have had to show me everything and in doing so, made my journey fantastical. I feel very lucky to have been chosen for whatever this is? I believe it has something to do with a reveal, perhaps to prepare humanity.
