＜p＞As a result of his research for this WWII novel, Gregory Hall travelled to the Philippines with a History Channel film crew, as well as with four of the surviving WWII participants. During the documentary filming, he visited the sites of the two internment camps, Los Banos and Santo Tomas. Additionally, he visited the locations of the beachhead where the amphibious tracked vehicles (AMTRAC’s) came ashore, the airfield used by the paratroopers who parachuted into the action, as well as the vacated prison where the liberated prisoners were taken. The author spent numerous years researching the liberation and has personally met many of the participants. Over the years, he has attended six reunions of the former paratroopers and internees. This novel weaves the experiences and stories shared by many of the participants. Gregory Hall’s father served as a paratrooper in the US Army’s 11th Airborne Division during the rescue. “ Like Father, Like Son” , the author enlisted in the US Army and became a paratrooper, albeit a second generation paratrooper during the Vietnam-era. He served with the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the mid-1970’s, attaining the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in the Airborne Infantry. The novel has been a work of passion for Gregory Hall. The desire to write this novel dates back to when the author was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His father, like many WWII veterans, rarely talked about the war. The author took advantage of being in an airborne division and began researching his father’s unit. It became evident to him that the heroic exploits of US paratroopers in the Pacific Theater of Operations were overshadowed by their “brother” paratroopers in the European Theater of Operations. Similarly, the successful rescue of over 2,000 prisoners from 30 miles behind enemy lines in the Philippines, was overshadowed by another historical event that occurred on the very same day, February 23, 1945. That event was the raising of the American flag by US Marines on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. The author is retired after a 24 year career as an FBI Special Agent. He has appeared as a military historian on the History Channel’s two hour documentary, RESCUE AT DAWN; THE LOS BANOS RAID. ＜p＞‘Essex Farm, Never Forgotten’ tells the story of Essex Farm and Calvaire (Essex) two First World War cemeteries in Belgium that will forever bear the Essex name. ‘Essex Farm’ is not a comprehensive history of the First World War or a detailed account of the Essex Regiment. However we do try and give concise background to the momentous events of the time and to the best of our ability hope our facts and summaries are accurate. World War One, or the Great War, was the war described as the war to end all wars. It began on 28th July 1914, when Austria declared war on Serbia, and lasted until 11th November 1918, when an armistice with Germany was signed in a railway carriage at Compi?gne, France. At 11am on 11th November 1918 - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - a ceasefire came into effect, the guns fell silent and the killing stopped. In four years the total number of deaths was estimated at eight and a half million which included over 900,000 from the British Empire, with a further two million wounded and 150,000 taken prisoner or listed as missing. During this war no part of the United Kingdom escaped the grim death toll. The war impacted on all parts of Essex and Essex itself has left its own permanent reminders in Belgium. Just to the north of Ypres or Iepere (in Dutch) in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium is Essex Farm. It is a First World War cemetery alongside the medieval Yser Canal. The area around Ypres (or the Ypres) salient, as it became known, was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting and worst carnage during the war and where poison gas was first used. Today Ypres has a population of approximately 40,000, about the same size as Rayleigh, or about half the size of Brentwood. Essex Farm was so named after the Essex Regiment. By Ypres standards Essex Farm is a relatively small cemetery with 1,204 burials recorded and yet it is just one of one hundred and sixty First World War cemeteries in the area. In contrast the nearby Tyne Cot Memorial bears the names of almost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. There are more British soldiers buried at Essex Farm than have died in service during the Falklands, Iraq and Afghan wars combined. The declaration of war in August 1914 brought with it a massive mobilisation. Three new Essex battalions were formed during August and September 1914 and the 13th Battalion (the Hammers) was formed early in 1915. During the second battle of Ypres of April and May 1915 both the 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment (the Pompadours), an existing fighting battalion that could trace its roots back 300 years, and the newly re-formed Essex Yeomanry (a cavalry regiment) were heavily engaged and suffered multiple casualties. In October the same year the 11th Battalion of the Essex Regiment arrived in Ypres and by the middle of 1915, it seems the name Essex Farm was regularly in use. The Western Front stretched for over 500 miles from the Belgian coast through France to the Swiss border. Two vast armies were dug in trenches and bunkers and faced each other across 300 yards of no-man's land. For just over four years movement on the front line was limited to about eight miles on either side. There was constant shelling and sniping. Each army engaged in continuous skirmishes and probing raids. There were the 'big pushes' that resulted in thousands and thousands of casualties. Essex Farm is the setting for the Memorial to John McCrae, the author of the poem ‘In Flanders Field’, one of the best known in the world. McCrae was a surgeon in the First Brigade of Canadian Field Artillery. He was posted to Essex Farm where he treated the injured during the second battle of Ypres. ＜p＞Robert Lewis Dabney (March 5, 1820 January 3, 1898) was an American Christian theologian, a Southern Presbyterian pastor, and Confederate Army chaplain best known for being chief of staff to General Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson during his famous Valley Campaign and the Seven Days Battles. He also wrote Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson, an invaluable biography of the general that was published in 1866, just a year after the Civil War had ended. Stonewall Jackson needs no formal introduction, being one of the most famous generals of the Civil War, revered throughout the South for his extremely successful military skill. At the same time, Jacksons pious Christianity and seeming eccentricities have continued to fascinate historians, scholars and readers, who often still argue why he would hold his left arm up with his palm facing outward while in battle. Jackson earned his famous stonewall moniker at the Battle of First Bull Run, when Brigadier-General Bee told his brigade to rally behind Jackson, who was standing like a stone wall. Its still unclear whether that was a compliment for standing strong or an insult for not moving his brigade, but the nickname stuck for the brigade and the general itself. Jackson would go on to lead an army to one of the most incredible campaigns of the war in the Shenandoah Valley in 1862. Known as the Valley Campaign, Jackson kept 3 Union armies occupied north of Richmond with less than 1/3 of the men. Jacksons forces marched about 650 miles in just 3 months, earning the nickname foot cavalry. Although Jacksons Valley Campaign was an amazing campaign still studied by military officers around the world, he is equally known for his famous flank march and attack at Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. Known for being ambitious and daring on the battlefield, Jackson led one of Lees wings on a march about 15 miles around the Army of the Potomacs right flank and completely surprised the 11th Corps with an attack, overwhelming them and rolling the Union line up. The march would end up winning the battle for the Confederates, who were outnumbered by nearly 50,000 men at Chancellorsville. Jackson, of course, was mortally wounded at the height of what may have been his finest hour. Conducting reconnaissance later on the night of May 2, 1863, he and his scouting group were mistaken for Union men and fired upon by a North Carolina regiment. Jacksons arm was amputated, but he died of pneumonia 8 days later, depriving the Confederacy of one of its best generals. Dabneys biography of Jackson is invaluable not just as a contemporary source but as a study of Lost Cause ideology, coming even before the phrase itself took hold. Dabneys hatred of the Yankees is evident throughout the book, as is his adulation of Jackson, who comes off as nearly perfect in this book. Slavery is depicted as a benign institution, and the Yankees are treated as inferior in every respect to Southerners. The frequent Lost Cause argument that the South lost only because of inferior manpower and resources can be found in this book, much of which was written before the Confederacy had been defeated. At the same time, Dabney wrote the book to demonstrate the importance of Christianity and its influence on Jacksons generalship, helping create the image of Confederates as dignified, Christian fighters. The biography will be of interest to anyone interested in Southern attitudes toward the North and the war in the 1860s.
