My limited and pitiful metaphorical language is incapable of describing the phenomenon that you are. It is inadequate for representing the fantastic dreamlike world of winged creatures, exuberant landscapes and mythical beings that are shown to me by your word and the empire of your starless eyes. I have lost track of the time, writing and composing clumsy expressions of lazy poems that comparing them to others end up being far from masterpieces nor genuine manifestations of love. What can I say about you that you do not know? Any present analogy is an author’s matter that does not stem from God nor black magic. Am I allowed to say that you are a flower? Or maybe that your eyes light up the sky? I wonder if I am allowed to compare the colour of the sunset with the end of life, or what I feel. Is it spring the beginning and dawning? While October and autumn announce the pain? Is it true that honey can be compared to tenderness and purple hue to what they last? Needless to mention the comparison between faraway stars with something as absurd as a utopia or even worse than that; to compare women with poetry, which, nonetheless, are just vain metaphors.

It is true…poetry feeds off metaphors ?for some people, to think about them takes hours- and rhymes are just a poem’s decoration, that is to say, to make them is to over-exaggerate them. As psychoanalysts say, the creation of metaphors is not more than a symptom: “a shaping of commitment”, it only takes a few clues to expose what is being restrained; something that the subject embraces to represent their suffering. It intrigues me to think about it, I like to think that science is not so different from lyrical composition. And, those creations allow me to block out the monstrously psychotic hole and turn it into the misery of a helpless neurotic, in this case, into a simple blissful misfortune.

Wildseed Witch is the first book in Marti Dumas’s fun middle-grade contemporary fantasy series with an all-BIPOC cast, about a social-media-loving tween who gets sent to an ultra-private witch camp.

Hasani’s post-seventh-grade summer to-do list is pretty simple: get a bigger following for her makeup YouTube channel and figure out how to get her parents back together. What she does NOT expect is that an emotional outburst will spark a latent magical ability in her. Or that the magic will be strong enough to attract the attention of witches. Or that before she can say #BlackGirlMagic, she’ll be shipped off on a scholarship to a fancy finishing school for talented young ladies.

Les Belles Demoiselles is a literal charm school. Here, generations of young ladies from old-money witch families have learned to harness their magic, and alumnae grow to become some of the most powerful women across industries, including politicians, philanthropists, CEOs, entrepreneursーand yes, even social media influencers. Needless to say, admission to the school is highly coveted, very exclusive . . . and Hasani sticks out like a weed in a rose bouquet.

While the other girls have always known they were destined to be witches, Hasani is a Wildseed??a stray witch from a family of non-witches, with no background knowledge, no way to control her magic, and a lot to catch up on. “Wildseed” may be an insult that the other girls throw at her, but Wildseeds are more powerful than they know. And Hasani will learn that there are ways to use magic and thrive that can never be taught in a classroom.

The Black Civil War Soldiers of Illinois The Story of the Twenty-ninth U.S. Colored Infantry【電子書籍】[ Edward A. Miller Jr. ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Black Civil War Soldiers of Illinois The Story of the Twenty-ninth U.S. Colored Infantry【電子書籍】[ Edward A. Miller Jr. ]

Chronicles the Civil War experience of a representative African American regiment

The Black Civil War Soldiers of Illinois tells the story of the Twenty-ninth United States Colored Infantry, one of almost 150 African American regiments to fight in the Civil War and the only such unit assembled by the state of Illinois. The Twenty-ninth took part in the famous Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, joined Grant's forces in the siege of Richmond, and stood on the battlefield when Lee surrendered at Appomattox. In this comprehensive examination of the unit's composition, contribution, and postwar fate, Edward A. Miller, Jr., demonstrates the value of the Twenty-ninth as a means of understanding the Civil War experience of African American soldiers, including the prejudice that shaped their service.

Miller details the formation of the Twenty-ninth, its commendable performance but incompetent leadership during the Petersburg battle, and the refilling of its ranks, mostly by black enlistees who served as substitutes for drafted white men. He recounts the unit's role in the final campaign against the Army of Northern Virginia; its final, needless mission to the Texas border; the tragic postwar fate of most of its officers; and the continued discrimination and economic hardship endured after the war by the soldiers.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】They Call Me "Doctor Death" HOW OUR MEDICAL SYSTEM ROBS THE TERMINALLY ILL OF COMFORT, TIME AND DIGNITY【電子書籍】[ Dr. Ken Pettit ]

Too often we view death as an enemy to be denied, fought, and defeated, rather than as an inevitable and natural part of life. The medical establishment routinely buys into this view, promoting aggressive treatments by overselling technology and hope, which only prolong needless suffering for terminal patients and their families. But as this candid book shows, we don’t have to go down that path.
As a long-time palliative and hospice care physician, Dr. Ken Pettit talks openly about a subject few of us want to discuss. His focus is not on prolonging life, but on helping terminal patients die “a good death,” with the best possible quality of life up to the end.
Based on his work with hundreds of patients and families, as well as the life-altering experience of watching family and friends face death, Dr. Pettit illuminates, in the vivid detail that only an insider can provide, the failings of our medical establishment. He empowers us to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and prepare, with pro-active clarity, for our final days. This book will help all of usーpatients, families, and medical professionalsーbreak our collective silence about death, so we can develop better ways of discussing, treating, and encountering what we will all someday face.

About the Author

Dr. Kenneth Pettit was born in Baldwin Park, Ca. and raised in Gilbert, Az. First exposed to medicine as a hospital orderly at age 18, he worked as an EMT before becoming a police officer and later a detective. After leaving law enforcement, Pettit obtained intermediate EMT and paramedic certifications, working in emergency rooms as an ER technician.
He earned an associate degree in nursing at Excelsior College and worked as an RN for several years, before going on to medical school at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, in Pomona, Ca. He completed his residency at
Midwestern University in Glendale, Az.
For 15 years Dr. Pettit worked in family practice, urgent care, and wound care before transitioning fulltime to hospice and palliative care. He has received a number of awards for his work. For recreation he enjoys riding Harleys, flying helicopters, and travel.

The Magical Secrets of the Inner Order of Barang【電子書籍】[ Charlz Wolfe ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Magical Secrets of the Inner Order of Barang【電子書籍】[ Charlz Wolfe ]

The Magical Secrets of the Inner Order of Barang is a collection and revelation of the magical secrets of the so-called Barang. It is an order or group of magicians, shamans, and witches somewhere in the native land of the Philippines. I had the opportunity to journey into its deep and dense forest in the Visayas region where I met a tribe of magical people engaged in the practice of ancient and most veritable magic.

The Magical Secrets of the Inner Order of Barang is a journey that is filled with magical learning and mysteries. By sharing this journey with you, I hope that you may learn the wisdom of their magic and be able to incorporate it into your own spiritual practice. Barang means magic, while the term mambabarang is a Filipino word that is similar to the shamans of Northern Europe. They are magical practitioners versed in the occult art of healing and cursing, among others. They have been feared throughout history, and their practice remains in deep secrecy to this day.

I have a friend who is a member of the mambabarang order, and so I was lucky to be invited into their holy event which lasted for a week. During that week ー a single week of pure magical practice and spirituality ー I learned more about myself and the meaning of true magic.

It should be noted that there are many and diverse mambabarang in the Philippines. My journey is with the inner order known as Barang. Fortunately, they happen to be the genuine and legitimate kind, for they have preserved the practice of their ancestors and remain dedicated to the practice of divine magic to this day.

So, just how much can we learn from this traditional group? I have to say that there is so much we can learn from them. Their magical system is a complete magical system that is based on nature. Just imagine that they live in a vast and dense forest. At night, the place is only illuminated by the moonlight, bonfire, and some fire sticks. It is magical, indeed ー and theirs is the kind of magic that is pure and unblemished by the modern world.

The Magical Secrets of the Inner Order of Barang will reveal to you the wonderful magic of the Barang ー of course, this is with permission from the leader of the order himself. Needless to say, the techniques and principles you are about to learn are those that the group agrees to be shared. There are other practices that could not be written in public, but this book would give you a nice head start into the sacred practice of magic of the so-called Barang magical order.

The Professor's House【電子書籍】[ Willa Sibert Cather ]

The moving was over and done. Professor St. Peter was alone in the dismantled house where he had lived ever since his marriage, where he had worked out his career and brought up his two daughters. It was almost as ugly as it is possible for a house to be; square, three stories in height, painted the colour of ashesーthe front porch just too narrow for comfort, with a slanting floor and sagging steps. As he walked slowly about the empty, echoing rooms on that bright September morning, the Professor regarded thoughtfully the needless inconveniences he had put up with for so long; the stairs that were too steep, the halls that were too cramped, the awkward oak mantles with thick round posts crowned by bumptious wooden balls, over green-tiled fire-places. Certain wobbly stair treads, certain creaky boards in the upstairs hall, had made him wince many times a day for twenty-odd yearsーand they still creaked and wobbled. He had a deft hand with tools, he could easily have fixed them, but there were always so many things to fix, and there was not time enough to go round. He went into the kitchen, where he had carpentered under a succession of cooks, went up to the bath-room on the second floor, where there was only a painted tin tub; the taps were so old that no plumber could ever screw them tight enough to stop the drip, the window could only be coaxed up and down by wriggling, and the doors of the linen closet didn't fit. He had sympathized with his daughters' dissatisfaction, though he could never quite agree with them that the bath should be the most attractive room in the house. He had spent the happiest years of his youth in a house at Versailles where it distinctly was not, and he had known many charming people who had no bath at all. However, as his wife said: "If your country has contributed one thing, at least, to civilization, why not have it?" Many a night, after blowing out his study lamp, he had leaped into that tub, clad in his pyjamas, to give it another coat of some one of the many paints that were advertised to behave like porcelain, and didn't. The Professor in pyjamas was not an unpleasant sight; for looks, the fewer clothes he had on, the better. Anything that clung to his body showed it to be built upon extremely good bones, with the slender hips and springy shoulders of a tireless swimmer. Though he was born on Lake Michigan, of mixed stock (Canadian French on one side, and American farmers on the other), St. Peter was commonly said to look like a Spaniard. That was possibly because he had been in Spain a good deal, and was an authority on certain phases of Spanish history. He had a long brown face, with an oval chin over which he wore a close-trimmed Van Dyke, like a tuft of shiny black fur. With this silky, very black hair, he had a tawny skin with gold lights in it, a hawk nose, and hawk-like eyesーbrown and gold and green. They were set in ample cavities, with plenty of room to move about, under thick, curly, black eyebrows that turned up sharply at the outer ends, like military moustaches. His wicked-looking eyebrows made his students call him Mephistophelesーand there was no evading the searching eyes underneath them; eyes that in a flash could pick out a friend or an unusual stranger from a throng. They had lost none of their fire, though just now the man behind them was feeling a diminution of ardour.

Inside Out Letters to My Children【電子書籍】[ Robert Powell ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Inside Out Letters to My Children【電子書籍】[ Robert Powell ]

As human beings, we appear to be at a crossroads in our relationship with everything that exists, and who would disagree that the world in which we live is not as it should be?

The merciless exploitation of the scarce resources of this fragile planet, the needless destruction of the environment, the paucity in our relationship with others and all of life is creating a scale of suffering that is unprecedented, and we stumble around in the dark looking for answers that will not appear.

Then, when we try to do something, we turn immediately to treating symptoms believing that this will solve the problems. While we may make small strides and feel that something is being achieved, these so-called solutions can only ever be temporary with the situation becoming even worse down the track if we do not approach what we are facing in a new way.

We need to understand that instead of treating symptoms we must address causes. If we are serious, and we need to be, then there is no other way, and it begins with us, by looking squarely, sincerely and objectively at ourselves and what we as individuals have become.

We need to examine ourselves closely and realise that the root of all our problems is not out there in some external arena, but here, within each one of us.

We need to know and understand ourselves and when we do, then the planet and our relationship with each other will begin to change for the better.

"Blinds down?" echoed Miss Tebbs, hastily moving a newspaper in the hope of concealing her ill-doing. "Why are you in such a taking, Jane? I suppose the family are away." "Rubbish!" exclaimed her relative, sinking into a chair and dragging off her gloves. "Did you ever know them all away together? Of course, Mrs. Shafto goes gadding, and Douglas is at Sandhurst, but 'he' seldom stirs. It is my opinion that something has happened. The Shaftos have lived at 'Littlecote' for ten years, and I have never seen the blinds down before to-day." "Oh, you are so fussy and ready to imagine things!" grumbled Mitty, who meanwhile had collected and pocketed the cards with surpassing dexterity. "I don't forget the time when the curate had a smart lady in his lodgings, and you nearly went out of your mind: rampaging up and down the village, and telling everyone that the bishop must be informed; and after all your outcry she turned out to be the young man's mother!" "That's true. I confess I was misled; but she made herself up to look like a girl of twenty. You can't deny that she powdered her nose and wore white shoes. But this is different. Drawn blinds are a sign of trouble, and there is trouble at 'Littlecote,' as sure as my name is Jane." "Then, in that case, why don't you go up to the house and inquire?"ーThe query suggested a challenge. "Mitty! You know perfectly well that I have never been inside the door since Mrs. Shafto was so rude to me about the book club, when I wrote and protested against the 'loose' novels she put upon her list. Why, you saw her letter yourself!" Here a pause ensued, during which Miss Jane blew into every separate finger of her gloves and folded them up with the neatest exactitude. Presently she murmured with a meditative air: "I was thinking of asking Eliza to run over." "Oh, you may ask!" rejoined her sister, with a sniff of scorn, "but Eliza won't stir. There's a beefsteak pudding for dinner. And that reminds me that this is the egg woman's day, and I must see if she has called. I shall want three dozen." And without another word the elder Miss Tebbs bustled out of the room and abandoned her relative to solitude and speculation. Matilda and Jane Tebbs were the elderly orphans of a late vicar, and still considered the parish and community of Tadpool their special charge. Miss Jane was organist and Sunday school superintendent; Miss Tebbs held mothers' meetings and controlled the maternity basket and funds. Subsequent to their retirement from the vicarage the sisters had known straitened circumstances; in fact, had experienced the sharp nip of real poverty; but, no matter how painful their necessities, they contrived to keep up appearances and never withdrew from society, nor suffered their little circle to forget that their grandfather had been an archdeacon. In spite of anxious times and scanty funds, they clung with loyal tenacity to certain family relics, in the shape of old silver, china and prints, many of which were highly marketable. In those evil days it was whispered that "the Tebbs had only one best dress between them"ーa certain rich black silk. As Miss Jane was at least six inches taller than dumpy Miss Mitty, difficulties of length were cunningly surmounted by an adjustable flounce. Needless to add that on festive occasions, such as high teas, little dinners, and card parties, the sisters never appeared together, the one "out of turn" invariably excusing herself with toothache or a heavy cold.

***This book contains extreme violence, drug use and descriptions of sexual interactions. Reader discretion is advised***

This is a story about friends that were forced by circumstance to find a better life for themselves on the streets. The way each of them found themselves on the street varied, some were abused teenagers that ran away from home, others were fugitives from Child Protective Services, but they all wanted nothing more than to go back to school, have friends and a loving, supporting family. Instead they found themselves forced to find a way to survive on the streets while avoiding the Pimps trying to force them into slavery, the Drug Dealers that sought to string them out on Dope and the Police. With nothing but their wits and their feminine wiles (and a boy named Twitch) the girls had to find a way to make it off of the streets before it was too late, so they banded together and with their new family they fought to hustle their way to financial independence. But the streets are hard and the world is unforgiving. And unfortunately, not everyone is strong enough to make it. This is the point where its supposed to be implied that the girls overcame their obstacles and went on to live happy lives, but that isn't the world we live in. Years have passed and now it's time to tell what happened so that their lives and their stories aren't forgotten. But the story of a group of abandoned teenage girls trying to hold their own against the 'powers that be' ends pretty much as you would expect. Needless to say, this story doesn't have a happy ending....

A Manual of Photographic Chemistry: Including the Practice of the Collodion Process【電子書籍】[ T. Frederick Hardwich ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Manual of Photographic Chemistry: Including the Practice of the Collodion Process【電子書籍】[ T. Frederick Hardwich ]

In attempting to impart knowledge on any subject, it is not sufficient that the writer should himself be acquainted with that which he professes to teach. Even supposing such to be the case, yet much of the success of his effort must depend upon the manner in which the information is conveyed; for as, on the one hand, a system of extreme brevity always fails of its object, so, on the other, a mere compilation of facts imperfectly explained tends only to confuse the reader. A middle course between these extremes is perhaps the best to adopt; that is, to make selection of certain fundamental points, and to explain them with some minuteness, leaving others of less importance to be dealt with in a more summary manner, or to be altogether omitted. But independently of observations of this kind, which apply to educational instruction in general, it may be remarked, that there are sometimes difficulties of a more formidable description to be overcome. For instance, in treating of any science, such as that of Photography, which may be said to be comparatively new and unexplored, there is great danger of erroneously attributing effects to their wrong causes! Perhaps none but he who has himself worked in the laboratory can estimate this point in its proper light. In an experiment where the quantities of material acted upon are infinitesimally small, and the chemical changes involved of a most refined and subtle description, it is soon discovered that the slightest variation in the usual conditions will suffice to alter the result. Nevertheless Photography is truly a science, governed by fixed laws; and hence, as our knowledge increases, we may fairly hope that uncertainty will cease, and the same precision at length be attained as that with which chemical operations are usually performed. The intention of the author in writing this work, is to impart a thorough knowledge of what may be termed the "First Principles of Photography," that the amateur may arm himself with a theoretical acquaintance with the subject before proceeding to the practice of it. To assist this object, care will be taken to avoid needless complexity in the formul?, and all ingredients will be omitted which are not proved to be of service.

On the forenoon of a day in February, 1899, the White Star S. S. Cryptic forced her way from Pier No. 48 out into the Hudson River through a mass of floating ice, which made a moving carpet over the whole river from Poughkeepsie to Sandy Hook. It was little wonder that the hearts of the outwardbound passengers were cheered with hope; outside on the wide ocean there must be somewhere clear skies and blue water, and perchance here and there a slant of sunshine. Come what might, however, it must be better than what they were leaving behind them in New York. For three whole weeks the great city had been beleaguered by cold; held besieged in the icy grip of a blizzard which, moving from northwest to south, had begun on the last day of January to devastate the central North American States. In one place, Breckenridge in Colorado, there fell in five daysーand this on the top of an accumulation of six feet of snowーan additional forty-five inches. In the track swept by the cold wave, a thousand miles wide, record low temperatures were effected, ranging from 15° below zero in Indiana to 54° below at White River on the northern shore of Lake Superior. In New York city the temperature had sunk to 6.2° below zero, the lowest ever recorded, and an extraordinary temperature for a city almost entirely surrounded by tidal currents. The city itself was in a helpless condition, paralyzed and impotent. The snow fell so fast that even the great snow-ploughs driven by the electric current on the tram lines could not keep the avenues clear. And the cold was so great that the street-clearing operationsーin which eight thousand men with four thousand carts dumping some fifty thousand tons of snow daily into the river were concernedーhad to be suspended. Neither men nor horses could endure the work. The “dead boat” which takes periodically the city’s unclaimed corpses to Potter’s Field on Hart’s Island was twice beaten back and nearly wrecked; it carried on the later voyage 161 corpses. Before its ghastly traffic could be resumed there were in the city mortuaries over a thousand bodies waiting sepulture. The “Scientific editor” of one of the great New York dailies computed that the blanket of snow which lay on the twenty-two square miles of Manhattan Island would form a solid wall a thousand feet high up the whole sixty feet width of Broadway in the two and a half miles between the Battery and Union Square, weighing some two and a half million tons. Needless to say the streets were almost impassable. In the chief thoroughfares were narrow passages heaped high with piled-up snow now nearly compact to ice. In places where the falling snow had drifted it reached to the level of, and sometimes above, the first floor windows.

This book addresses the paradox between preponderance of hunger in a continent that is well endowed with fertile agricultural land, plenty of fresh water and a vibrant labor force. As some statistics show, close to 60% of arable land in the world is located in Africa which also has several rivers flowing in all seasons and plenty of underground water. The bulk of its labor force thrives on agriculture, yet the continent’s largest import item is food. 23 of 36 the most malnourished countries also belong in Africa. This has caused significant needless human suffering.

This book goes beyond providing the traditional framework of supplying policy recommendations to delivering an applied, innovative framework upon which policymakers, the private sector and international institutions can take clear and deliberate action to stimulate Africa's agricultural sector, thus responding to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Nicole and Harrison: An anthology of Mail Order Bride Romance【電子書籍】[ Sarah Amberson ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Nicole and Harrison: An anthology of Mail Order Bride Romance【電子書籍】[ Sarah Amberson ]

Nicole looked out the window of the moving stagecoach. The bushes, rocks, and other bits of terrain rushed past. It had been far too long since she stood on solid ground. She was going to arrive in Terran, Texas any minute now. From what Harrison had told her in his letters, it was a tiny town with not much to offer besides the people and its community. Needless to say, it was better than what she was leaving behind. Nicole thought back to the suburb of Chicago where she had lived for most of her life. It wasn't the town that was bad, but the people.

Her parents had passed away almost three years ago and then she had found Arlen. He had been the worst mistake of her entire life. She sighed, closing her eyes and leaning back into the stagecoach seat. Maybe she was making a mistake by coming west to marry a man she barely knew and while doing so, doing it dishonestly. She hadn't told him about Arlen or her past. She didn't know how he would respond if he knew. And she prayed he would not be at all like Arlen.

Harrison had never asked directly about her past and from what she could tell he was very conservative as well as worried about the mail order bride system. If he had specifically asked her, she would have had to tell him, but since he didn't, she had said nothing. She was pretty sure that if she had told him that she had been in a relationship before, he most likely would have never agreed to marry her.

The town finally came into view. She immediately spotted a small hotel and saloon. They were right there on main street, along with a bank, a blacksmith shop, a feed store, and a few other buildings. The place was so much smaller than Chicago. Past the shops on main street were buildings that looked like homes. Then past that was land and smaller roads that most likely led to people's ranches. It was a quaint little place, but it looked safe. That was what Nicole liked most about it. There was something unnerving about Chicago, always having to look over her shoulder to make sure no one was after her. Here the buildings were simply made, just for the convenience. Each and every building looked useful like it was made with a purpose. There were no pompous houses or places that made her think of the wealthy, there were just simple little cabins and small businesses. Of course, there were some buildings which were larger than others. Maybe wealthy families living better than the rest was something that she would find everywhere, even in this tiny town in Texas.

When the stagecoach came to a stop, Nicole peered outside, looking for any sign of Harrison. He was going to be there, she was almost certain. He'd told her that he would be there. She already had some fond feelings for him from their shared correspondence, but she had no idea what he looked like. There was a man, leaning against a building that had a sign which read, "post office," on it.

He was tall, with dark hair that bordered on black. He was clean - shaven and had dark tan skin as if he spent a lot of time in the sun. He was handsome, so much more handsome than Nicole had expected.

Hi, my name's Billy Hamelin. You may or may not have heard of me. If you haven't, I'm sure you've heard of my dad, Wallace Hamelin. Yeah. That Wallace Hamelin, the inventor of the Trapper Keeper. Needless to say, after all the success of the Trapper Keeper, we were pretty well-off for a while there, before my dad got sick and passed away in the mid 90's. That's what happens when you decide to have a son when you're 63. It's not like I'm mad at my dad for being so old when he had me. It's not like you can blame him. He is my dad, after all. And even though I didn't get a lot of time with him, the time I did get was pretty awesome, and I really do appreciate it.

By far, one of the coolest, and probably out-there things my dad ever did for me was on the Christmas following my 18th birthday, when he bought me a sex-slave. Yeah, I told you it was pretty out-there. But, again, I'm not complaining. At the time, I thought I was pretty fucking lucky - excuse my French. And I still do. Identifying Exclusionary Abuses by Dominant Undertakings under EU Competition Law The Spectrum of Tests【電子書籍】[ Eirik osterud ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Identifying Exclusionary Abuses by Dominant Undertakings under EU Competition Law The Spectrum of Tests【電子書籍】[ Eirik osterud ]

Under Article 102 TFEU, dominant firms are allowed to compete, but only to the extent their market behaviour does not constitute an abuse. Needless to say, the wording of the article neither explains what an abusive restriction of competition is nor how such a practice can be identified. Rather than developing a one-size-fits-all test applicable to all forms of market behaviour by dominant firms, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and the General Court (ex; Court of First Instance) have set out a system of tests for separate categories of conduct. Drawing on the full range of the EU Courts' relevant case law, this very useful book analyses the conditions that must be fulfilled for a broad range of business practices to be deemed abusive within the meaning of Article 102 TFEU, and also identifies the criteria that must be fulfilled for a practice to be 'objectively justified'. The potentially abusive practices studied here (as defined in the relevant case law) include the following: predatory pricing; margin squeezing; exclusivity agreements; loyalty rebates; refusals to supply to induce exclusivity; secondary line price discrimination; vexatious litigation; acquisitions of intellectual property rights (IPRs); refusals to supply necessary inputs; provision of storage equipment on the condition of exclusive use; selective above-cost price cuts; tying; technological integration; and refusal to license IPRs. The author also contrasts the Commission's decisional practice with the case law, assesses approaches under U.S. antitrust law to similar forms of conduct, and incorporates insights from economic theory. This study greatly enhances our understanding of the distinction between abusive conduct and lawful competition. In the course of its clarification of the EU Courts' responses to individual forms of market behaviour, an overall approach to the identification of exclusionary abuses under Article 102 TFEU begins to come into view. Apart from the important new synthesis the work offers legal scholars, there can be little doubt this book will prove a valuable asset and even an inspiration to competition lawyers.
