Essay from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5 (A), University College Cork (English), course: En 3004 Introduction to Anglo-Irish Literature, language: English, abstract: In his narrative poem Mnemosyne Lay in Dust, Austin Clarke writes about a personal experience, which he has made some 50 years before he first published this poem, when he suffered a mental breakdown. Although, it is his own experience, he does not write in first person but uses a protagonist, Maurice Devane, and presents this trauma in third person to the reader. This could be, because this experience, even if it has happened half a century ago, is a very personal one and using a third person narrator possibly makes it easier for him to write about it. The protagonist Maurice Devane experiences the loss of self: he looses his memory, he does not know himself any more.

If your memories don't belong to you, then who are you?

In a world ruled by dust storms, the Library is humanity's last bastion. Here, the past flows through the veins of the living Mnemosyne Vines. For Linnea, the faithful guardian of this sacred garden, every memory is a priceless treasure to be protected.

But a sinister plague begins to spread within the Library's walls: The Mnemosyne Strain. This affliction, which seizes the minds of visitors and traps them in the sweet but deadly embrace of lost memories, is driving the Library to chaos. The source of the plague is a secret, one with roots in the Library's own forbidden history and the dangerous obsessions of its brilliant founder.

There is only one way to end this madness, but it requires breaking the Library's most sacred rule: to enter another's mind. Risking everything, Linnea dives into the depths of the founder's mindーa world that bends reality and operates by its own impossible laws.

But the answers she seeks lead her not only to secrets that will shake the foundations of her own identity, but to conspiracies that push the Library to the brink of civil war. And in trying to silence an echo within a mind, Linnea is unaware she has disturbed a much greater power, one that has been slumbering in the silence of the universe.

"The Mnemosyne Strain" is a breathtaking science fiction adventure where order and chaos collide, and a single memory can change the fate of the universe.

Mnemosyne A Love Affair with Memory【電子書籍】[ Larry L. Franklin ]

Memory is our most treasured asset. Seldom has such a complex subject been presented in a compelling narrative, where the intellect, the curious, and the recipient of horrific memories can grasp its meaning. Mnemosyne: A Love Affair with Memory is such a story. The two main characters, Larry L. Franklin and Richard Semon, lived in different centuries on opposite sides of the world, with memory as the common obsession that ties the two stories together. Franklin was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder brought on by physical and sexual childhood abuse. He had lived for decades without knowing the cause of his misery. If not for his mothers revelations, he might never have seen the memories that nearly cost him his sanity. Long-term therapy, self-exploration, and an able psychotherapist brought him back from the dark side. Richard Semon was a world-renowned nineteenth-century evolutionary biologist. His reputation crumbled when he fell in love with a fellow professors wife, who chose to leave her husband and children for a life with Richard. The university fired Richard, his peers turned away, and the one-time-professor turned private-thinker/philosopher dedicated the remainder of his life to the study of memory. Peer rejection and the later death of his wife drove Richard into a deep depression followed by suicide. This is a work of creative nonfiction written in the form of a hybrid memoir. The complexities of memory, together with the mysteries of a spiritual journey, yearned for an approach different from the strictly fact-based, nonmetaphorical strategies most common in nonfiction. Long before the written word, the ancient Greeks conveyed the complications of mortal life and left veiled advice for future generations through stories, myths, and legends. They brought human qualities and quests to life through the exploits of an assortment of gods, goddesses, and other mythological creatures. Even now, artists sometimes use Greek mythology to explain the seemingly unexplainable. I chose Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, as a conduit for the deeper, more abstract aspects of my own and Richard Semons navigation of the spiritual world. Personifying memory as the Greeks did seemed appropriate to my quest, as it was to Richard Semons. Writers of memoir depend on their relationship to memory, are smitten with it, are obsessed by it, and chase it down the halls of recollection, always in pursuit of an entity that disappears around every next corner, much like an elusive lover who bids the beloved to come hither, but who then flees, disappearing and reappearing in a seemingly endless chase. When memory finally turns to face the one chasing her, the embrace can be both wonderful and terrible. This was so for Richard Semon, and it was so for me. Memory reaches back in time and challenges the accuracy of what one recalls in that embrace. I wrote what I remember; nothing more, nothing less.

Mnemosyne The Parallel Between Literature and the Visual Arts【電子書籍】[ Mario Praz ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Mnemosyne The Parallel Between Literature and the Visual Arts【電子書籍】[ Mario Praz ]

The classic study of the timeless relationship between literature and the visual arts

In his search for a common link between literature and the visual arts, Mario Praz draws on the abundant evidence of mutual understanding and correspondence they have long shared. Praz explains that within literature, each epoch has “its peculiar handwriting or handwritings, which, if one could interpret them, would reveal a character, even a physical appearance,” and while these characteristics belong to the general style of a given period, the personality of the writer does not fail to pierce through. Praz contends that something similar occurs in art. He shows how the likeness between the arts within various periods of history can ultimately be traced to structural similarities that arise out of the characteristic way in which the people of a certain epoch see and memorize facts aesthetically. Mnemosyne, at once the goddess of memory and the mother of the muses, presides over this view of the arts. In illustrating her influence, Praz ranges widely through Western sources, providing an incomparable tour of the literary and pictorial arts.

The Memory Collector is a haunting speculative thriller that unravels the fragile boundaries between memory, identity, and control. In a near-future society where consciousness can be copied, stolen, and sold, one woman awakens at the center of a conspiracy that threatens not only who she isーbut what it means to be human. Elena Ryker wakes in The Forgotten Room, a locked chamber with no recollection of her past. As she stumbles through disjointed recollections in Fragments, a name echoes in her mind: Silas. Her quest for answers leads her to a chilling revelation in The Collectorーa hidden facility harvesting memories for profit and power, where she is told she volunteered. In Silas Black, Elena uncovers a classified file about a rogue memory thief who once worked for the very organization that claims to have created her. But as she slips into Borrowed Lives, experiencing memories that aren't hersーtraumas, joys, fearsーshe realizes she might be more than one person. Her search for truth intensifies in The Man in the Alley, when a stranger recognizes her by another name. With the help of Juno, a hacker in Data Ghosts, Elena learns that stolen memories leave behind digital "ghosts," and her own identity is a composite of many lives. A fractured memory in The Broken Mirror reveals a forgotten loveーSilas was more than a name; he was part of her.
In a world where memories can be manufactured, what happens when the past is rewritten?

A year after the fall of the Echo Protocol, humanity faces a new dawn with Synthetic Genesisーa neural technology that offers the ability to craft custom memories, emotionally indistinguishable from reality. Governments herald it as a path to healing, but as individuals awaken with implanted lives they never chose, the unsettling truth emerges: the future is being authored, one false life at a time.

Society divides into two factions: the NeoGens, who embrace synthetic memories, and the Organics, who resist, clinging to their authentic pasts. At the heart of this transformation is Aetherion, the corporate-state conglomerate controlling the distribution of Synthetic Genesis.

Elara, a digital remnant of a once-vibrant leader, is recompiled from fragments within Rey's mind. Escaping a simulated construct, she inhabits a borrowed body, her identity a blend of the original and the new. Rey, now leading The Reclaimers, a clandestine group of neuro-specialists and archivists, discovers Aetherion's latest project: EDEN. This initiative doesn't merely implant memoriesーit creates synthetic citizens from scratch, indistinguishable from the real, and seeds them into society.

As Elara grapples with her existenceーcopy or continuationーshe faces a pivotal choice: to infiltrate the Mnemosyne Core, Aetherion's master database, and unleash a truth virus that could restore humanity's authentic memories. But the virus requires a synthetic host to trigger it from within, and Elara volunteers, knowing the peril it entails.

In a surreal digital Eden, Elara confronts Dr. Mira Voss, Aetherion's CEO and the first perfected synthetic being. Their ideological battle culminates in Elara launching the virus, causing a global awakening as synthetic peace clashes with painful truths. As the system collapses, Elara dissolves, leaving behind a final memory: a vision of a child, laughing and loved, running into the arms of a real mother.

A new world emergesーa hybrid society where individuals choose between synthetic pasts and reclaimed realities. A universal ethic of memory consent is established, and history is curated, but not controlled. In a hidden archive, a young girl discovers a holographic file titled Elara Sloane ? Memory Broker and smiles.

"I remember her.

The work of German cultural theorist and art historian Aby Warburg (1866?1929) has had a lasting effect on how we think about images. This book is the first in English to focus on his last project, the encyclopedic Atlas of Images: Mnemosyne. Begun in earnest in 1927, and left unfinished at the time of Warburg's death in 1929, the Atlas consisted of sixty-three large wooden panels covered with black cloth. On these panels Warburg carefully, intuitively arranged some thousand black-and-white photographs of classical and Renaissance art objects, as well as of astrological and astronomical images ranging from ancient Babylon to Weimar Germany. Here and there, he also included maps, manuscript pages, and contemporary images taken from newspapers. Trying through these constellations of images to make visible the many polarities that fueled antiquity's afterlife, Warburg envisioned the Atlas as a vital form of metaphoric thought.

While the nondiscursive, frequently digressive character of the Atlas complicates any linear narrative of its themes and contents, Christopher D. Johnson traces several thematic sequences in the panels. By drawing on Warburg's published and unpublished writings and by attending to Warburg's cardinal idea that "pathos formulas" structure the West's cultural memory, Johnson maps numerous tensions between word and image in the Atlas. In addition to examining the work itself, he considers the literary, philosophical, and intellectual-historical implications of the Atlas. As Johnson demonstrates, the Atlas is not simply the culmination of Warburg's lifelong study of Renaissance culture but the ultimate expression of his now literal, now metaphoric search for syncretic solutions to the urgent problems posed by the history of art and culture.

Un groviglio di sentieri Vita di Aby Warburg【電子書籍】[ Hans C. H?nes ]
