A Queen of Nine Days【電子書籍】[ Margaret Wright Brown ]

It was in the month of May, in the year 1553, and I was a young girl, only seventeen, when my dear fatherーmy mother being deadーastonished me beyond measure by disclosing the fact that I was to leave my home in Sussex and proceed to the city of London, there to become gentlewoman to a lady of high degree. That was not the sort of life I should have chosen by any means, for my freedom was as dear to me as to any of God's creatures of earth, or sea, or sky. Having no mother, and with a most easy-going father and a brace of madcap young brothers, I had run wild all my life, and could ill brook the idea of being confined within four walls for the most part of my days, attired in the fine clothing of a grand lady. What compensations should I have for such joys as lying for hours on the soft turf of the Downs, looking up to the blue sky and making out pictures in the white clouds flitting across it, whilst I listened to the singing of the skylarks, or sitting beneath an overturned boat on the seashore, hearing the lapping of the waves and gazing across the Channel, with wondering speculations of the lands beyond those fair blue waters, or, on the other hand, rowing out upon the sea with my brothers, or riding with them at breakneck paces over hill and dale? What would they do without me, little Hal with his endless scrapes and foolhardy schemes, and Jack with his love of fighting and passionate essays to assert the manhood latent in him? Notwithstanding my wildness, I was a softening influence in their lives, for there was in me ever, even then, the consciousness which is not very far from any of us that there is a Higher Law than even the sweetest promptings of our own fond wills. I never talked about itーfather used to say, 'Many words show weakness in a cause'ーmuch less preached to the boys, but I knew it was so and they were aware I knew it, and that was quite enough. They were good lads, and, as the serving men and women said, I had them at a word. I did not like the thought of leaving my brothers, or my father, or, as I have said, my freedom and the skylarks, turf, sky, clouds, seashore and mystery of wild sea-waves, with the unknown lands beyond, but never thought of opposing my father's will, and, easygoing though he was, dared not question it; however, I went down to the parsonage to speak to Master Montgomery, our curate, of the matter, and, after listening to all I had to say, and cheering me with descriptions of wondrous sights to be seen in London, he uttered wise words, which stilled my trouble mightily. 'Child,' he said, laying his hand gently on my head, 'listen to me. This call which has come to you is not of your own seeking, therefore it must be from Him Who alone was found worthy to hold the Book of Lifeーthe lives of His peopleーin His hands. He Who called Rebekah from her water-pot and David from his sheep, Elisha from his ploughing and the praying women of Jerusalem to follow Him to the Cross, is surely calling you to do some special work. It may be lowly in its nature, or it may be great, but whatever it be, it is surely work that you and no one else can do. Like the little maid who was carried away into captivity and did great things for her master Naaman, the Syrian, so, it may be, you, too, may carry help and healing to some afflicted one amongst those whom the world calls mighty. And remember,' he added very earnestly, 'remember that you can do nothing in your own strength, but that with the help of the Holy Spirit, which is given to those who ask for it, all things will be possible.'

Bad Habits: A MMF Romance【電子書籍】[ Isla Chiu ]

Persephone Danbury doesn't mind being a nun at St. Camilla's Convent. Sure, it can be dull, but it's better than being in London with her harsh father, and she has her dear friend Mary beside her.

However, after a night swim that leads to an encounter with the wickedly handsome Marcus Elham, the Duke of Charlotteshire, her life ceases to be dull. And she soon finds herself sought after by not only the duke, but also his friend Thomas Ellison, a devilishly attractive tycoon...

Bad Habits is a MMF romance that may contain historical inaccuracies and definitely contains two obsessed alpha males! If you can get with that, enjoy this sexy story that's chock-full of OTT instalove!

WORD COUNT: 12,000

EXCERPT:

Though she instantly hated the stranger, she couldn't help noting how handsome he was. Golden hair, bright hazel eyes, the facial structure of a Greek god. He wore fine, expensive clothes that marked him as a member of the nobility. He seemed familiar. Had she seen him at a ball last season?
Her face lost all remaining color as she realized his identity. He was Marcus Elham, the Duke of Charlotteshire. Unlike her father, he was extremely wealthy ー and extremely powerful.
"Can you speak, fair maiden, or are you mute?" he asked.
She wished she could throw a stone at his head. "I can speak."
He smiled. "So fair maiden who can speak, do you or do you not want your clothes back?"
She clenched her teeth. "I do want my clothes back, so if you could hand them to me, I would be much obliged."
Ignoring her, he mused, "A habit. So you're from the convent…"
"Excellent deduction," she muttered.
"Was that a sarcastic remark? I thought that nuns weren't allowed to be sarcastic."
She wanted to snort. Some of the nuns at St. Camilla's Convent were definitely sarcastic, especially Sister Grace, who loved to give Persephone a hard time for her "extraordinarily poor arithmetic skills."
"May I have my clothes back?" she asked, near the edge of desperation.
"That depends…"
Frustration brewed in her. "Depends on what?"
He lowered his head, grabbing her chin. "If you're willing to give me a kiss."
Before she could push him away or slap him, he put his mouth on hers. She caught her breath. She had kissed a few boys before, but the kisses had always been chaste; they might as well have been pecks from her grandmother. This kiss from the duke, however, was anything but chaste. He thrust his tongue between her lips, threatening to completely consume her. And for some reason, she liked ー no, loved ー it.

The Key to Markree Castle【電子書籍】[ Bradley Charbonneau ]

4 boys, 3 days, 1 castle.
You do the math.
It adds up to adventure, trouble and ... fries.

In "The Secret of Markree Castle," 4 young boys find themselves in a 1 castle for 3 days and the nanny who was supposed to watch over them ... flaked. "That's OK," their parents said, "They're old enough now and responsible, right?"

You can practically hear the boys' voices, "Sure, dad, we're responsible ... !" Then queue the evil background laugh and kids boiling pots of parents deep in the dungeon and ... I have to stop. It doesn't get that bad, I swear.

But you see, dear reader, this book was written together with these 4 real life boys. We had Skype calls together (2 of the boys live in Beijing, China), we shared emails and asked lots of questions (for example, "If you could have any magical power, what would it be?"). I think it's fair to say that I learned more about my boys and their 2 friends writing this book together with them than I did hanging out with them all together.

The Secret was the first book in the Markree Castle series and got the boys through the first night. This is the second book in the series and in "The Key to Markree Castle," the boys are in deeper than they thought possible, with the future of the castle in their hands.

Here is a list of bullet points of takeaways from the book.

-- 9-year old references no adult could possibly understand (or want to).
-- Soccer, fries, and a castle. What else could a few boys dream of?
-- Useless phrases in Dutch and Mandarin you can use at school to impress your friends!
-- Written with the help of real 9- and 11-year olds.
-- Parenting strategies so questionable your kids will be begging you to adopt them (the strategies, not the kids).
-- Rarely before witnessed insight into the minds of young boys on their own with no parents.
-- Study guides included on medieval castle architecture. (OK, not really.)
-- Fun for the whole family! (Depending on your family, of course.)
-- Bonus: learn the names of Donald Duck’s nephews in Dutch and Mandarin!

The Secret of Markree Castle【電子書籍】[ Bradley Charbonneau ]

The babysitter flaked and four young boys have pretty much free reign of a castle. "Wait, what?" they ask. Yes, they heard it right. While one of their dad is getting married, the boys are free to explore the castle.

"They're old enough to be responsible, aren't they?" one dad asked the other. Ah, we soon shall see what the boys discover as they explore the castle, make new friends and learn of the secret of the Markree Castle.

But what is the secret of the castle? What lurks behind all of those doors down in the cellar? Who's that scary old guy Killian? Is Alastar to be trusted?

You see, dear reader, I don't know yet. These four boys are the creative behind the story. In many ways, I'm just the messenger. The story and magic and secrets of the castle are up to them. It's a collaborative effort and we talk, we imagine, we have Skype calls with poor WiFi connections while two boys are getting ready for bed in San Francisco, California and the other two are having breakfast in a restaurant in their hometown of Beijing, China.

How is this going to work? How are two dads and four boys going to write a book together? Who knows! Has it been done before? Who knows! Who cares!

What's happening is that we're all working on a project together. The kids are digging deeper into their creative minds and their dads are learning sides of their kids that they didn't even know existed. What would your child answer to the question, "If you could have any magical power, what would it be?" Do you know what your child would answer? Of course not. But you might have an idea. Do you know what's fun? Ask your child and guess (quietly) what they might say. Then listen to what they say and see how it differs from what you thought they would say. The answer might surprise you.

That's how we're writing this book. It's a collaboration of these four boys and two dads (from different families). Three of us live in San Francisco and three of us live in Beijing. We're using shared online documents and Skype calls to communicate the story, the characters, and what's going to happen next.

This first book (available April 1, 2015 in honor of Li & Lu's first adventure, The Secret of Kite Hill) has turned into more of a story that we had imagined and it's going to make this book only the first part of a series with the four boys at the castle.

Oh, dear reader, I wish I could tell you what's going to happen in books two and three, but I don't know myself. We'll have to see what the boys come up with. But for now, enjoy The Secret of the Markree Castle and please leave us a note in the comments as to what you'd like to see in the upcoming books.

Thanks for visiting. We hope you enjoy The Secret of Markree Castle.

The Trail of Black Hawk【電子書籍】[ Paul Greene Tomlinson ]

“Black Hawk is on the trail again.” Joseph Hall was the speaker. With his parents, two sisters and a brother he lived on the American frontier in Illinois. In these days a reference to that part of the country as “the frontier” would cause a smile to appear on the faces of those who might hear such a statement, but in the year 1832, when the scene of this story is laid, Illinois was very far west. On Indian Creek, near its junction with Fox River, in a little clearing in the forest, the Hall family dwelt and made a hard living from the soil and from the game they might secure with the rifle. Ten years before this time they had forced their way westward from eastern Pennsylvania and had hewn a home for themselves out of the wilderness. At that time Joseph and his younger brother Robert were only nine and seven years old, respectively. Brought up in the woods and on the prairies they had learned the wisdom of the forest, the secrets of the trees, the flowers and the streams; they knew the habits of the wild animals and the favorite pools of the fish. Thorough woodsmen they were both of them, sound in mind and strong in body. Fatigue was almost unknown to these boys, and to endure hardships was a part of their everyday life. It was now spring. The sun was warm and the trees were bursting with new life as the days grew longer and summer approached. The time had come when the crops must be planted and it was in this occupation that the two boys were engaged when Joseph made his remark concerning Black Hawk. A space several acres in extent, had been cleared in the heart of the forest and here it was that the Hall family eked out a scanty existence. At one end of the clearing stood their home. A rough log cabin was all it was, but it was home and consequently was very dear to the Halls. In the rear the clearing ran down to the edge of the woods and as much as possible of this land was under cultivation. Year by year the clearing had been enlarged until now it occupied a considerable extent. Joseph and Robert were busy at the opposite end from the place where their home stood. “Black Hawk on the trail again!” exclaimed Robert in response to his brother’s remark.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Sons of Assumption: A History of a French Parochial High School In Massachusetts【電子書籍】[ Nancy Rocheleau ]

Sons of Assumption explores the rich history of Assumption High School, then later Assumption Prep, which prepared boys for the priesthood for almost sixty-five years before closing in 1970. With classes taught in French, it was not uncommon for Canadian and French families to entrust the school to turn their sons into godly men. In their own words, the graduates describe their feelings of homesickness, struggles with discipline, and how their experiences allowed them to succeed in their careers. The author doesn’t just provide a careful retelling of the graduates’ experiences, she also delves into the history of Worcester, Massachusetts, and how the school’s buildings that its alumni hold so dear have since been repurposed. As a distinctive and proud Franco-American Catholic boarding school, Assumption High offered its pupils an education that was rigorous, religious, and designed to preserve the French-Canadian language and culture that its students and their families cherished.

A Little House in War Time【電子書籍】[ Agnes and Egerton Castle ]

Even in the ordinary course of lifeーthose times that now seem extraordinary to a world already accustomed to the universal struggleーwhen everyone in England was in peace, except where their own unquiet spirits may have marred it, even then this nest of ours seemed peace within peace. We do not know now whether the contrast is not the more acute. One of the thousands of homes dedicated to the quiet joys and innocencies of life, where no one ever wanted to quarrel, because all found the hours so full of sweet content, we do not flatter ourselves that we are singular: only typical. The shadow of the great cloud cast at first a hideous, unnatural darkness over our harmless ways. All during the long golden summer, when we looked out across the moor basking in the radiance; when our roses bloomed and the garden rioted in colour, and the valley slowly turned from green to russet; when the harvest-moon went up like a huge brass platter in silver skies, the very beauty of it all clutched one’s heart the fiercer. How fares it with our boys over there in the heat and the stress? How much worse it must be for them that the sun should blaze upon them, marching, firing, rushing forward, lying wounded, wanting water!... Oh, dear lads of England, how we at home agonized with you! The little house, bought in a light-hearted hour, furnished with infinite zest in happy days out of distant Rome, was a sort of toy to us from the beginning; and kind friends surveyed it with indulgent and amused, yet admiring, glances, such as one would bestow upon an ingenious and pretty plaything. We called it the Villino, partly in memory of the Italian sojourn, and partly because, though it is bounded by wild moors, it contrives a quaintly Italianate air. It stands boldly on the lip of the hill, and the garden runs down in terraces to a deep valley. Across the valley to the east the moors roll, curve upon curve. South, facing us, the trees begin their march; and westward the valley spreads, rising into moors again, where again the fir-trees sentinel the sky. The view from the terrace rather takes your breath away. It is unexpected and odd, and unlike anything, except Italy and Scotland mixed: the wildness, and the trim terraced garden with its calculated groups of cypress, its vases brimming with flowers, its stone steps, its secret bowery corners.

Barrie ]

Barrie ]

J. M. Barrie’s classic work Peter Pan (1904) tells the story of the Darling children’s journey to the magical islands of Neverland with Peter Pan, an adventurous young boy who refuses to grow up. The omniscient narratorーwho addresses the audience in the first personーintroduces the Darling family, which includes Mr. and Mrs. Darling; their three children, Wendy, John, and Michael; and a dog named Nana. The family resides in London, where the children share a nursery. In the present, Wendy tells Mrs. Darling about a boy named Peter Pan, who visits her dreams from a place called Neverland. After the children go to sleep, Peter Pan unexpectedly enters through their bedroom window, startling Mrs. Darling. When Mr. and Mrs. Darling leave the house to attend a nearby dinner party, Peter returns with his fairy, Tinker Bell. Wendy awakes and helps Peter attach his shadow to his body. Peter tells Wendy that he has no parents and that he refuses to ever become an adult; he lives in Neverland with a group of abandoned children who refer to themselves as “the lost boys.” Intrigued with Neverland, Wendy asks him about fairies, which reminds Peter that he accidentally trapped Tinker Bell inside a closed drawer. The play Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up was first produced in December 1904, with Gerald du MaurierーSylvia’s brother and the father of writer Daphne du Maurierーplaying both Mr. Darling, the father of the children spirited away by Peter Pan, and Captain Hook, the villainous pirate whom Peter defeats. That play added a new character to the mythology of the English-speaking world in the figure of Peter Pan, the eternal boy. Though the popular conception of the character is that of a charmingly impish figure, bent more on adventure and escaping the tedium of adulthood than anything truly sinister, the Peter of the play and books is anarchical, selfish, and murderous. For example, he kills his compatriots “the Lost Boys” when they show signs of maturing. Notes by Barrie indicate that Peter was in fact intended to be the true villain of the story. The scene in the play introducing Captain Hook was included only as a means of filling the time needed for a set change. The iconic buccaneer was retained in the 1911 novelization of the play, Peter and Wendy. Most of Barrie’s stage triumphs have been dismissed by critics as marred by ephemeral whimsicalities, but at least six of his playsーQuality Street (1901), The Admirable Crichton (1902), What Every Woman Knows (1908), The Twelve-Pound Look (1910), The Will (1913), and Dear Brutus (1917)ーare of indisputably high quality. Barrie idealized childhood and desexualized femininity but took a disenchanted view of adult life, as reflected in the gentle melancholy of those works. Sometimes he expressed his disenchantment humorously, as in The Admirable Crichton, in which a butler becomes the king of a desert island, with his former employers as serfs; sometimes satirically, as in The Twelve-Pound Look; and sometimes tragically, as in Dear Brutus, in which nine men and women whose lives have come to grief are given a magical second chance, only to wreck themselves again on the reefs of their own temperaments. The elaborate stage directions in Barrie’s plays are sometimes more rewarding than their dialogue itself. Barrie proved himself a master of stage effects and of the delineation of character, but the sentimental and whimsical elements in his work have discouraged frequent revivals.Barrie was created a baronet in 1913 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1922. He became president of the Society of Authors in 1928 and chancellor of the University of Edinburgh in 1930.

Over the last few years I have watched her absolutely refuse to stop clinging to Christ in the midst of a deluge of hard things. The words in this book are hard-won. They are hard-lived.
Peter and Wendy by J. M. Barrie

A classic by J. M. Barrie, Peter Pan (1904) tells the story of the Darling Journey to the Wonderland Islands of Neverland with Peter Pan, an adventurous boy who refuses to grow up. Wise commentator, first referring to the audience - introduces the Darling family, including Mr. and Mrs. Darling. Today, Wendy tells Mrs. Darling about a boy named Peter Pan who comes to visit her dreams from a place called Neverland.

After the children went to bed, Peter Pan unexpectedly entered through the bedroom window, shocking Mrs. Darling. Peter tells Wendy that he has no parents and that he refuses to be an adult; He lives in Neverland with a group of homeless children who call himself “The lost boy,” Wendy, fascinated by Neverland, asks him about an angel, reminiscent of Peter, that he accidentally stuck Tinkerbell in a closed drawer.

Peter tempts Wendy to join his journey to Neverland. Peter then blows fairy dust at the three beloved children and they begin to fly around the room, while Nana invades Darling's dinner to remind parents that something has happened to the child. But before the parents went to the nursery, the children flew with Peter and Tinkerbell and went out the window and toward the stars.

Dear children flying over Neverland, find familiar landmarks from their dreams. After a while, the pirates fired their cannons into the sky. John and Michael landed in a different area from Wendy and Tinker Bell, and Peter was nowhere to be found.

The narrator introduces the lost boys, the rest of the pirates, and the Red Skins. Together with Peter, the lost boy lives in an underground house. When Wendy and Tinker Bell arrived, the children mistook Wendy as a bird at first and one of them, Thulees, fired arrows at her before Peter arrived. After it's done, the kids knock on Wendy's new door and she invites them to read Cinderella.

Peter and the children convince Wendy to be their mother. As time goes on, which is hard to calculate in Neverland, Wendy, John and Michael become accustomed to living with a lost boy. Stories from Switzerland【電子書籍】[ Anonymous ]

People say that idle folks are good-for-nothing folks: but they might say much more upon the subject. Idleness is a sin against God, and therefore idlers never can be happy; for how can any persons be happy when they are committing sin? Maurice knew this very well, at least his parents had often told him so; but Maurice still continued his sinful habits of idleness, carelessness, and self-indulgence; he very often neglected his duties, and I need not add, that he was very often unhappy. My dear children, you might as easily count the sparks which fly up the chimney, as reckon up the sins and troubles which come from idleness. Maurice had passed several unhappy idle weeks. He did not like to write a copy; he said his lessons were all so hard that he could not learn them; he laid in bed of a morning till obliged to get up; and when his brothers and sisters asked him to do any thing for them, he spoke cross and pushed them away. He was dull, peevish, and discontented; just as idle boys and girls always are. There he is in the picture; he sat for two hours together playing with his keys, rather than learn his lesson, though he wished for a game of play, and knew that he could not be allowed to play till he had repeated it. People generally go on from bad to worse, and the last week was the worst of all. It began badly. On Sunday morning Maurice gave way to a naughty temper, and spoke to his mother in a very improper manner. Instead of praying to God to send away this evil temper, he thought about something else while he repeated his prayer, and ate his breakfast without asking a blessing, just as a little dog would have done. After breakfast he teazed his sisters, and did all he could to hinder them from learning the chapter they were to repeat to their father in the afternoon. He went to church it is true, but he did not attend to any thing that he heard; part of the time he looked about him, and the remainder he sat yawning, and he asked three times when the sermon would be over. I have told my little readers enough about his naughty behaviour; the rest of the day passed much in the same manner, and the rest of the week like the Sunday. I have always found that unless there is “Happy Sunday,” there will not be “a Happy Week.” Thus there was nothing but idleness, quarrelling, disobedience, ill-tempers, and ill-manners; and poor Maurice during this week fully shewed the sinfulness of his heart. His behaviour clearly proved the truth of the text, “His servants ye are whom ye obey;” (Romans vi. 16.) and my readers will recollect that when this text was written the servants were slaves. He had obeyed Satan by his wicked conduct on the Sabbath, and he continued to serve that hard master all the week, with a constant attention to his will that was very dreadful. How much better it would have been to have served the Saviour, “whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light.” His father was very kind, and warned him several times of the consequences of such conduct. On the following Sunday he spoke again to Maurice for a considerable time, telling him how displeasing such conduct was to the Lord.

The Heroes, Or Greek Fairy Tales For My Children Illustrated Edition【電子書籍】[ CHARLES KINGSLEY ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Heroes, Or Greek Fairy Tales For My Children Illustrated Edition【電子書籍】[ CHARLES KINGSLEY ]

★ The Heroes, Or Greek Fairy Tales For My Children ★

My Dear Children,

Some of you have heard already of the old Greeks; and all of you, as you grow up, will hear more and more of them. Those of you who are boys will, perhaps, spend a great deal of time in reading Greek books; and the girls, though they may not learn Greek, will be sure to come across a great many stories taken from Greek history, and to see, I may say every day, things which we should not have had if it had not been for these old Greeks. You can hardly find a well-written book which has not in it Greek names, and words, and proverbs; you cannot walk through a great town without passing Greek buildings; you cannot go into a well-furnished room without seeing Greek statues and ornaments, even Greek patterns of furniture and paper; so strangely have these old Greeks left their mark behind them upon this modern world in which we now live. And as you grow up, and read more and more, you will find that we owe to these old Greeks the beginners of all our mathematics and geometryーthat is, the science and knowledge of numbers, and of the shapes of things, and of the forces which make things move and stand at rest; and the beginnings of our geography and astronomy; and of our laws, and freedom, and politicsーthat is, the science of how to rule a country, and make it peaceful and strong. And we owe to them, too, the beginning of our logicーthat is, the study of words and of reasoning; and of our metaphysicsーthat is, the study of our own thoughts and souls. And last of all, they made their language so beautiful that foreigners used to take to it instead of their own; and at last Greek became the common language of educated people all over the old world, from Persia and Egypt even to Spain and Britain. And therefore it was that the New Testament was written in Greek, that it might be read and understood by all the nations of the Roman empire; so that, next to the Jews, and the Bible which the Jews handed down to us, we owe more to these old Greeks than to any people upon earth. ...

The book contains the following tales:

STORY I.ーPERSEUS

PART I HOW PERSEUS AND HIS MOTHER CAME TO SERIPHOS

PART II HOW PERSEUS VOWED A RASH VOW

PART III HOW PERSEUS SLEW THE GORGON

PART IV HOW PERSEUS CAME TO THE ?THIOPS

PART V HOW PERSEUS CAME HOME AGAIN

STORY II.ーTHE ARGONAUTS

PART I HOW THE CENTAUR TRAINED THE HEROES ON PELION

PART II HOW JASON LOST HIS SANDAL IN ANAUROS

PART III HOW THEY BUILT THE SHIP ‘ARGO’ IN IOLCOS

PART IV HOW THE ARGONAUTS SAILED TO COLCHIS

PART V HOW THE ARGONAUTS WERE DRIVEN INTO THE UNKNOWN SEA

PART VI WHAT WAS THE END OF THE HEROES

STORY III.ーTHESEUS

PART I HOW THESEUS LIFTED THE STONE

PART II HOW THESEUS SLEW THE DEVOURERS OF MEN

PART III HOW THESEUS SLEW THE MINOTAUR

PART IV HOW THESEUS FELL BY HIS PRIDE

WHILE the line to be taken by the new railway between Culm and Everill was still under discussion, the engineer caused some difference of opinion among the moneyed men who were the first Directors of the Company, by asking if they proposed to include among their Stations the little old town of Honeybuzzard. For years past, commerce had declined, and population had decreased in this ancient and curious place. Painters knew it well, and prized its mediaeval houses as a mine of valuable material for their art. Persons of cultivated tastes, who were interested in church architecture of the fourteenth century, sometimes pleased and flattered the Rector by subscribing to his fund for the restoration of the tower, and the removal of the accumulated rubbish of hundreds of years from the crypt. Small speculators, not otherwise in a state of insanity, settled themselves in the town, and tried the desperate experiment of opening a shop; spent their little capital, put up the shutters, and disappeared. The old market-place still showed its list of market-law's, issued by the Mayor and Corporation in the prosperous bygone times; and every week there were fewer and fewer people to obey the laws. The great empty enclosure looked more cheerful, when there was no market held, and when the boys of the town played in the deserted place. In the last warehouse left in a state of repair, the crane was generally idle; the windows were mostly shut up; and a solitary man represented languishing trade, idling at a half-opened door. The muddy river rose and fell with the distant tide. At rare intervals a collier discharged its cargo on the mouldering quay, or an empty barge took in a load of hay. One bold house advertised, in a dirty window, apartments to let. There was a lawyer in the town, who had no occasion to keep a clerk; and there was a doctor who hoped to sell his practice for anything that it would fetch. The directors of the new railway, after a stormy meeting, decided on offering (by means of a Station) a last chance of revival to the dying town. The town had not vitality enough left to be grateful; the railway stimulant produced no effect. Of all his colleagues in Great Britain and Ireland, the station-master at Honeybuzzard was the idlest manーand this, as he said to the unemployed porter, through no want of energy on his own part. Late on a rainy autumn afternoon, the slow train left one traveller at the Station. He got out of a first-class carriage; he carried an umbrella and a travelling-bag; and he asked his way to the best inn. The station-master and the porter compared notes. One of them said: "Evidently a gentleman." The other added: "What can he possibly want here?" The stranger twice lost his way in the tortuous old streets of the town before he reached the inn. On giving his orders, it appeared that he wanted three things: a private room, something to eat, and, while the dinner was being cooked, materials for writing a letter. Answering her daughter's questions downstairs, the landlady described her guest as a nice-looking man dressed in deep mourning. "Young, my dear, with beautiful dark brown hair, and a grand beard, and a sweet sorrowful look. Ah, his eyes would tell anybody that his black clothes are not a mere sham. Whether married or single, of course I can't say. But I noticed the name on his travelling-bag. A distinguished name in my opinionーHugh Mountjoy. I wonder what he'll order to drink when he has his dinner? What a mercy it will be if we can get rid of another bottle of the sour French wine!" The bell in the private room rang at that moment; and the landlady's daughter, it is needless to say, took the opportunity of forming her own opinion of Mr. Hugh Mountjoy.

It is 1630 and Venice is being torn apart by factions within and enemies without. Our two now-grown Alberti friends from ‘Venetian Born’ fight through plague and war in this, their “Venetian Crucible,’ to rise from the ashes fully equipped to fulfill their separate destinies in the third and fourth books of my tetralogy ‘East/West.’

This is the story of boys becoming men: Love discovered, love lost, love reclaimed. Friendships are re-kindled, new bonds formed while dear ones are lost. All melts down in this inferno of violence and contention; evil forces at work to undermine seemingly every effort at recovery and freedom. This is a story of great anguish for both Piero and Giulio Alberti, but also perseverance thanks to faithful souls like Father Leo and Anzcha, faithful fathers like Fiamo and Andrea, the irreverent Antonio and rakish Romano, the indomitable Dr. Anzelieri, and effervescent Evangelina and ‘Ji,' who illiterates many of the strong and unique ties between Venetian and Ottoman culture.

Throughout this book, Venetian Crucible,’ you, the reader, will learn countless things about the Venetian culture of that time, like boxing, music, education, and trade. You will hopefully gain some insight into how the republic lasted twelve hundred years. Considering the crises, it went through to survive that long, not the least being the threat of invasion of three of the major powers of that dayーthe Muslim Ottomans and the Imperialist Spanish and Austrian Hapsburgs, I believe one can learn some things which might be pertinent today, like their use of detente to maintain its status after falling from the dominant power it was even at the time of the beginning of my first book. Also relevant to us would be the true religious faith the people of this book maintained in the face of such natural disasters like flood and plague, the plague of this book eliminating one out of three Venetians in that city. This story also recounts the very beginnings of what became the Italian Mafia. But the character who existed to come over to America in 1635 was, in fact, the first Italian to settle in North America, and his progeny survived to become anything but Mafia-like, but like Piero himself, who you can read about in the third book of my trilogy titled ‘Land of Tribute.’

My name is Thomas Rockafellar; father and mother always called me Tommy, and by that name was I known until I grew too old to be called by anything more familiar than Tom. I have seen people look at one another, and smile, perhaps, when they have heard the name Rockafellar mentioned as that of a family; but I here beg leave to state that the Rockafellars are an exceedingly ancient race, who, if they do not claim to have arrived in this country with William the Conqueror, can excuse themselves for not having landed with that chieftain by being able to prove that they had been many years established when the keels of the Norman galleys grounded on the Hastings shore. Amongst my ancestors were several sailors, who had served the king or queen of their times in the navy of the state. A portrait of Ebenezer Rockafellar, who was a rear-admiral in the early years of George the Second’s reign, hung in the dining-room at home, and represented a face like that of the man in the moon when the planet rises very crimson out of the sea on a hot summer’s evening. He had a tail on his back and a great copper speaking-trumpet under his arm and his forefinger, on which was a huge ring, rested upon a globe of the world. The artist had painted in a picture of a thunderstorm happening through a window, with the glimpse of a rough sea, and an old-fashioned ship like a castle tumbling about in it resembling a toy Noah’s ark tossing on the strong ripples of a pond. It might have been my looking at this red-faced ancestor of mine, and admiring his speaking-trumpet, and the noble colour of weather which stained his face that first put it into my head to go to sea. I cannot say. Who can tell where little boys get their notions from? I would stand before that picture, and in my small way dream about the ocean, about sharks, tropic islands full of cocoa-nut trees, and monkeys, and parrots gorgeous as shapes of burnished gold; and I would dream also, all in my small way, of flying-fish like little lengths of pearl flashing out of the dark-blue brine on wings of gossamer, and elephants and ivory tusks, and of black men in turbans and robes glittering with jewels, like the dark velvet sky on a midsummer night; and so on, and so on, until there arose in me a passion to go to sea, and behold with my own little eyes the wonders of the world. Father and mother tried hard to conquer my desire; and then, when they found I would still be a sailor, they pretended to consent, secretly meaning to weary me out, or to give me a good long chance of changing my views by delaying to take any steps to humour my wishes. At last, finding my mind to be wonderfully resolved, my father talked to my mother gravely about my disposition for the seaーtold her that when a boy exhibited a strong inclination for a walk, no matter of what nature if honest, he should not be baulkedーthat I might have the makings of another Captain Cook in me, or at all events of a Vancouver, and end my days as a great man. “Besides, my dear,” said he, “one voyage at least cannot harm him; it will fill his mind with new experiences, it will also test his sincerity; it will act as the strongest possible persuasion one way or the other. It will be cheaper too than a year of schooling, and more useful, I don’t doubt. So, my dear, let us make up our minds to send him into the Merchant Service for one voyage.”

Our Story of His Lessons【電子書籍】[ Sonya Contreras ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Our Story of His Lessons【電子書籍】[ Sonya Contreras ]

Dear Ones,
Twenty years of Christmas news-letters arranged in descending order.

The lessons and my skills in writing have changed over the years, making it embarrassing to remind you of how simple the lessons once were and how rough the writing you endured. But the lessons needed learning and the stories must be told. Not to show what great things we have done, but to show what a great God we serve. It is, after all, His Story, as well as ours. And so, I expose our lives once again to the scrutiny of readers who may not understand why we do what we do, to share those lessons God has taught us of His faithfulness.

Because they were originally written as letters with postage considerations, proper punctuation (like new paragraphs for different speakers and topics) was overlooked to condense the writing.

These lessons aren’t really about picking up our clothes, or closing the door, if we open the door, or even how to love and get along with other people, although we’ve tried to instill those practices in our boys.

If there is only one lesson from this book above all others, it’s to know God. If you know God, He will teach lessons essential for you. He will show you the important things, the simple things, His things. He will lead you step-by-step through the simple lessons to the harder to conform you into His image. So that in the end, He can say, “Well done. My good and faithful servant.”

Sonya Contreras

People ask about the boys, about how we do it, about what it’s like. The yearly letters found here give you a glimpse into those answers.

We’ve lived in the foothills of the Sequoias for over eighteen years. Almost half of the boys were born in the house. We’ve set down roots, not only in our garden and with our animals but in our hearts where the land has helped us settle. We share memories on a yearly basis of what God teaches us, thus the chronicles of the Christmas letters.

Although the boys, quickly grown to be men, manage most of the happenings, I’m kept busy with laundry and putting food on the table. My husband works hard and travels far every day to provide for our experiments. We homeschool and that keeps them gathered around the homestead most days, unless they help others cut wood, weed-wack, or complete yard work. Sometimes, they may even throw a loop over a cow that needs rounded up.

Each one has his own talents. Some specialize in mechanics rather than animal husbandry. They’re relieved when their job at the barn is finished and they can see grease under their fingernails again. Others long for the smell of hay, horses and cows as they milk and evaluate pastures. All enjoy competing in sports where their legs are stretched and their minds are cleared. Each skill pushes them to their potential, and extends my husband and mine as we help them.

We are asked what animals we now have. It changes. But chickens, cows, horses, cats and dogs seem to be constant. Pigs, goats, sheep, birds and even guinea pigs have passed through our hands and hearts to leave a lesson from God to teach determination and hope. Busy times, where eight boys learn to be men; men with convictions and courage and skills that will take them into life.

Join me here for the lessons learned from years of life. Lessons of small steps, big hearts, treasured memories and a God Who holds our hands as we walk through it all.

Two of her stories, "Polly Pepper's Chicken Pie" and "Phronsie Pepper's New Shoes", proved to be very popular with readers.
