Conan, Gods of the North【電子書籍】[ Robert E Howard ]

The clangor of the swords had died away, the shouting of the slaughter was hushed; silence lay on the red-stained snow. The pale bleak sun that glittered so blindingly from the ice-fields and the snow-covered plains struck sheens of silver from rent corselet and broken blade, where the dead lay in heaps. The nerveless hand yet gripped the broken hilt: helmeted heads, back-drawn in the death throes, tilted red beards and golden beards grimly upward, as if in last invocation to Ymir the frost-giant.

Across the red drifts and mail-clad forms, two figures approached one another. In that utter desolation only they moved. The frosty sky was over them, the white illimitable plain around them, the dead men at their feet. Slowly through the corpses they came, as ghosts might come to a tryst through the shambles of a world.

Their shields were gone, their corselets dinted. Blood smeared their mail; their swords were red. Their horned helmets showed the marks of fierce strokes.

One spoke, he whose locks and beard were red as the blood on the sunlit snow.

"Man of the raven locks," said he, "tell me your name, so that my brothers in Vanaheim may know who was the last of Wulfhere's band to fall before the sword of Heimdul."

"This is my answer," replied the black-haired warrior: "Not in Vanaheim, but in Valhalla will you tell your brothers the name of Amra of Akbitana."

Heimdul roared and sprang, and his sword swung in a mighty arc. Amra staggered and his vision was filled with red sparks as the blade shivered into bits of blue fire on his helmet. But as he reeled he thrust with all the power of his great shoulders. The sharp point drove through brass scales and bones and heart, and the red-haired warrior died at Amra's feet.

Errol Flynn was literally born the star that he became. His entire life was one of a swashbuckling rogue who strode across life's stage bigger than life and in the process reduced everyone else's life to insignificance. As thrilling and exciting his swashbuckling movie roles were, his real life adventures frequently surpassed them. His life was the things dreams were made of and he enjoyed every minute of it. Errol was born in the South Seas, a mysterious and romantic place for moviegoers at the time. During his youth, while his contemporaries were getting dull jobs in government or business and settling down to an equally dull family life, Errol was leading the life of a modern day pirate, roaming the high seas in search of booty and lust. At one time or another he was a jewel thief, a "black slaver," a confidence man, a plantation manager, a soldier of fortune, and an explorer. He shot it out with headhunters, was on the run from the law, and once was tried for murder. He seduced almost any women he met, be they young or old, plain or beautiful, and if the opportunity offered, relieved them of their valuables. His youth was one of adventure and romance and from one day to the next he neither knew nor especially cared what tomorrow would bring. He lived for the moment and burned the candle at both ends, then burned it in the middle at the same time.

When Errol got to Hollywood he became an immediate success and zoomed right to the top, all in one stunning leap. He was everything men and women believed a real man should be: handsome, daring, bold, witty, and romantic. And his fans immediately saw that this was not just an act; Errol was the real deal, and they could not get enough of him. Errol was not a master at his craft like Humphrey Bogart, and in fact he admitted to his fellow actors on several occasions that he knew nothing about acting and wanted to keep it that way. But he had what many professional actors only dreamed about, an electrifying screen presence. Whereas his peers spent their entire careers attempting to steal scenes and prevent being upstaged by others, when Errol walked on a set all the other actors receded into insignificance and all attention was automatically riveted on him. His mere presence on the screen was enough to upstage all his fellow actors.

It was Errol Flynn against Warner Brothers every step of the way. Like no actor previous and no actor since, Errol waged a never-ending battle against his movie studio; in effect it was a duel between titans. On one side was Jack Warner, who had beaten down some of the most famous stars of that era (including Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Bette Davis) and on the other, Errol Flynn, who acknowledged no master.

Half way though the filming of a movie it was typical of Errol to refuse to continue unless he got a new contract and if he didn't, he was prepared to walk away from it all at a moment's notice. Errol would curse out his directors, particularly Michael Curtz, on the set in such foul language that his frequent co-star, Olivia de Havilland, would run to her dressing room in fright, with tears streaming from her eyes and covering her ears with her hands.

There will never be another actor like Errol Flynn. He strode across the movie screen like the colossus he was and between Captain Blood (1935) and They Died With Their Boots On (1941) he made the screen's greatest adventure movies of all time, all of which have become classics. In both his personal life and movie career Errol burned the candle at both ends, because, like the boy-wonder Irving Thalberg, he knew that he would die young. However, unlike Thalberg, who took the greatest of care to preserve his short life, Errol lit his afterburner and lived a life most others could only fantasize about. So read on and live the dream remembered that was Errol Flynn, for there will never be another like him.

My Lover, My Garden【電子書籍】[ Erik Gustafson ]

Crazy, vivid short story of battling the demons lurking in the garden.

Conscious Eggplants...Razor sharp onion stalks...Killer carrots...Envious tomatoes...Jealous angry vines...is brotherly love stronger than the sick love of a demonic garden? Two brothers are about to find out how strong love can be.

You have never seen a garden like this.

Bonus content: I've included chapter 1 of my horror novel Fall Leaves and the Black Dragon!

Random excerpt:

I pursued, chopping and stomping as I advanced. The only sound was the swoosh and thud of my machete tearing into vegetables. It was a perplexing scene: there were tall plants like corn and tomatoes everywhere but thriving perfectly underneath that canopy were berries of all sorts: strawberries, raspberries, blackberries. It was all so delicious looking I found myself forcing back the urge to pause and eat. I hacked my way past the corn, splattered through some tomato plants. I was panting; juices were streaming down my machete and sprayed all over my face and clothes. I could feel seeds stuck to my face. I must have looked like a mad murderer. I didn't look good but I pressed forward into some onions.

The onion stems were already on high alert and on the offense as they slashed upward at me from the dirt with green sabers. They popped out of the ground and lashed at me. I smashed many into mushy white pulp underfoot but at last, one managed to slice a line up the back of my jeans. I stumbled away, hopping because it burned to put weight on that leg; I felt the blood running down my leg.

Vistas in Sicily【電子書籍】[ Arthur Stanley Riggs ]

Sicily is the rarest flower of the great midland sea. Built up on the North in a series of beetling cliffs, the island slopes gently down through mountain chains and undulating plains to the golden Southern shore. An enormous triangle it is, spiny with lofty peaksー?tna towers more than ten thousand feet in the airーspangled with flowering meads and dells where Nature loads the air with fragrance; pierced with infernal caverns, whence choking workers extract a large part of the world’s sulphur from the palaces of the former gods of the nether world; and fring?d about on every side with the lace-like foam of opal waves. It is rich in beauty and desolation, rich in song and story, rich in architecture, splendid and varied. To understand the beauty and charm of Sicily, however, it is essential to know something of the island’s picturesque and vivid story. We Americans are rarely familiar with it. Strange as it may seem, considering Sicily’s importance through many centuries, its consecutive history still remains to be written. Books there are, to be sure, but none attempts to cover more than a portion of one of the most intense chronicles in the world. Thucydides, in his “Peloponessian War,” tells in glowing phrases of the d?bacle that wiped out the Attic forces and left Sicily supreme. Later still, in the ante-Christian era Diodorus, a native of the island, prepared a flowing story of the Sicily he knew. It has been one of our chief sources of information ever since. In modern times the historians Grote and Curtius have included in their histories of Greece such parts of the Sicilian narrative as are germane to their work; and the English historian Freeman, in a monumental unfinished work, has left us a minutely detailed account of Sicily from prehistoric times to the reign of Agathocles. The Italian Amari, to go yet farther, handles the Saracen period with care and skill, and Gally Knight tells briefly of the dashing Normans and their fanciful architecture. But of the later periods almost nothing of lasting value has been written. Moreover, the books of travel dealing with Sicily are few in comparison with those which tell of other lands, and not many Americans discover, unaided, the paradise they omit from their itineraries. The most usual mistake made regarding Sicily is that it is a little island, vaguely located in imagination somewhere near Italy and peopled by Italiansーits inhabitants, Black Handers, organ-grinders, scissors-men, ditch-diggers and the rest, mala gente all. Sicily is near Italyーtwo miles away, in factーand it is full of Italians, in the sense that they are Italian subjects. But by heredity, by instinct, by everything that pertains to racial culture and development, they are far from being Italians yet. The explanation is a simple one. By consulting the map you see that the triangleーwith an area of some ten thousand square milesーis not only in the center of the Mediterranean from East to West, but that it is also a great stepping-stone between Europe and Africa. In ancient days, when all the civilized world bordered the Mediterranean, the geographical position of Sicily gave the island an especial political character and importance. And naturally, while it remained the very center of the civilized world, it was a rich prize to be fought for by each Nation which rose to power. Traditionーas usualーpeoples the land first with gods, both beneficent and malign, and then with giants to whom Homer refers in the Odyssey: Laistrygones, Cyclops, Lotophagi. After these “poetic monsters” came the Sikans, Sikels and Elymians, genuine peoples, who may be called the prehistoric natives as distinguished from the historic foreigners. Of the three the Sikels, undoubtedly blood-brothers to the pioneers of Rome and Tuscany, are the most interesting; and a legend has it that they drifted on rafts from the Italian mainland across the channel now called the Strait of Messina, about 1100 B. C. They were permanent and important enough to give the island the name Sikelia, which is still current in our modified form, Sicily

Thank you for respecting the hard work of this author.
A keen eye was kept on the ridgeline in vigilance just in case the dark forces had a moment of inspiration and had changed their archers’ placement. Throughout the remainder of the trek not one bowman was spotted on the heights. As the dwarven warriors closed the gap, the command was given by Captain Rherger in his determined voice and again echoed through the ranks. “MODIFIED TURTLE FORMATION, HOOO!”.
In unison, the dwarven vanguard commenced the maneuver. The clerics finished, then held their prayer, waiting for the right moment. In the near distance, in front of the orc lines, emerged ten figures, all shrouded in black cloaks. It began. Red bolts of vile energy leapt forth from their hands towards the dwarven front. Orc arrows were let loose from the midpoint of the cut on their precarious debris-formed ledges. A crisp energetic blast issued from the captain’s horn as one of the brothers let loose his prayer. Instantaneously, divine blue light flashed in front of the column absorbing all but four of the red bolts as four dwarves fell. They were quickly replaced by the ranks. Another cleric released God’s pent up energy. Brilliant, bright yellow lightning, streaking down from heaven incinerated all but two of the dark emissaries. It continued ripping through the ranks of the orcs with blinding fury, sending some twenty odd more to their deserved fate. Another course of arrows streamed outwards from the beasts and a few more dwarves fell; much less than if the body had not been protected by the turtle. Another shrill blast left the captain’s horn. The dwarves now advanced at a run with their archers releasing their volley into the ever increasingly panicked orcs. The orc missile battery was just about to release another volley as their leader heard the dwarven anvil’s war cry at his rear, “For the blood of the Lamb!”
The opposition’s head archer’s hesitation and indecision allowed the dwarven archers to accurately begin counter battery engagement into the orcs. The dwarven arrows cut their rivals down with exact precision. The clergy focused on their dark opponents as the wretches attempted to scurry back into the center mass of the orcish formation. One brother directed his prayer at the abyssal cowards and the remainder of black-cloaked figures stood unmoving, frozen amidst their swarm.
The sound of melee raged everywhere, splashes of red and black blood flew about, with the crushing of bones and the shredding of flesh coursing through the field. Pressing the attack, the soldiers of Iron encircled the orcs, never allowing them a retreat. The greenish gray creatures, lacking any unit cohesion and being cowards at heart, turned to run as individuals, then small groups, and finally as a whole. Dwarven battle axes continued to hack into the despicable creatures. The beasts realized their error too late. Captain Rherger ordered, “to the last, to the last, to the last!” The orcs’ eyes opened to the light in a panicked frenzy. With a final desperate attempt, the orcs met their end while the sturdy warriors of light dispatched them with ruthless determination. The dwarves followed their captain’s orders, “to the last.”

Kings of the Earth【電子書籍】[ Jon Clinch ]

Following up Finn, his much-heralded and prize-winning debut whose voice evoked “the mythic styles of his literary predecessors . . . William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy and Edward P. Jones” (San Francisco Chronicle), Jon Clinch returns with Kings of the Earth, a powerful and haunting story of life, death, and family in rural America.

The edge of civilization is closer than we think.

It’s as close as a primitive farm on the margins of an upstate New York town, where the three Proctor brothers live together in a kind of crumbling stasis. They linger like creatures from an older, wilder, and far less forgiving worldーuntil one of them dies in his sleep and the other two are suspected of murder.

Told in a chorus of voices that span a generation, Kings of the Earth examines the bonds of family and blood, faith and suspicion, that link not just the brothers but their entire community.

Vernon, the oldest of the Proctors, is reduced by work and illness to a shambling shadow of himself. Feebleminded Audie lingers by his side, needy and unknowable. And Creed, the youngest of the three and the only one to have seen anything of the world (courtesy of the U.S. Army), struggles with impulses and accusations beyond his understanding. We also meet Del Graham, a state trooper torn between his urge to understand the brothers and his desire for justice; Preston Hatch, a kindhearted and resourceful neighbor who’s spent his life protecting the three men from themselves; the brothers’ only sister, Donna, who managed to cut herself loose from the family but is then drawn back; and a host of other living, breathing characters whose voices emerge to shape this deeply intimate saga of the human condition at its limits.

---

Praise for Kings of the Earth

O, The Oprah Magazine

In his masterful and compassionate new novel, Kings of the Earth, Clinch borrows from a true-life case of possible fratricide. Three elderly, semiliterate brothers live in squalor on a ramshackle dairy farm in central New York state. The prismatic narrative shifts time and point of view, and Clinch easily slips into the voices of his diverse cast of charactersーa nosy, good-hearted neighbor, a police investigator struggling to do the right thing, and the brothers’ drug-dealing nephew. Through evocative descriptions of the landscapeー“a countryside full of that same old homegrown desolation”ーand by imbuing these odd men with a gentle nobility and an “antique strangeness,” Clinch has created a haunting, suspenseful story.

The Washington Post Book World

True feeling seems to be out of fashion in contemporary fiction, and fiction is the poorer for it. Disaffection and irony may be the tenor of the times, but too much of it can leave you estranged and lonely. Then along comes Clinch, and we are once again safe at home, in the hands of a master.

Kings of the Earth recalls the finest work of John Gardner, and Bruce Chatwin’s On the Black Hill, another exploration of the bonds between brothers that go unspoken but never unexamined. It becomes a story that is not told but lived, a cry from the heart of the heart of the country, in William Gass’s phrase, unsentimental but deeply felt, unschooled but never less than lucid. Never mawkish, Clinch’s voice never fails to elucidate and, finally, to forgive, even as it mourns.

The Washington Post named Kings of the Earth to its list of the five best novels of 2010.

Mooswa & Others of the Boundaries【電子書籍】[ William Alexander Fraser ]

The short, hot Summer, with its long-drawn-out days full of coaxing sunshine, had ripened Nature's harvest of purple-belled pea-vine, and yellow-blossomed gaillardia, and tall straight-growing moose weed; had turned the heart-shaped leaves of the poplars into new sovereigns that fell with softened clink from the branches to earth, waiting for its brilliant mantle--a fairy mantle all splashed blood-red by crimson maple woven in a woof of tawny bunch-grass and lace-fronded fern. Oh, but it was beautiful! that land of the Boundaries, where Black Fox was King; and which stretched from the Saskatchewan to where the Peace first bounded in splashing leaps from the boulder-lined foothills of the Rockies; all beautiful, spruce-forested, and muskeg-dotted--the soft muskegs knee deep under a moss carpet of silver and green. The Saskatoons, big brother to the Huckleberry, were drying on the bush where they had ripened; the Raspberries had grown red in their time and gladdened the heart of Muskwa, the Bear; the Currants clustered like strings of black pearls in the cool beds of lazy streams, where pin-tailed Grouse, and Pheasant in big, red cravat, strutted and crouked in this glorious feeding-ground so like a miniature vineyard; the Cranberries nestled shyly in the moss; and the Wolf and Willow-berries gleamed like tiny white stars along the banks of the swift-running, emerald-green Saskatchewan and Athabasca. All this was in the heritage land of Black Fox, and Muskwa, and Mooswa. It was at this time, in the full Autumn, that Whisky-Jack flew North and South, and East and West, and called to a meeting the Dwellers that were in the Boundaries. This was for the choosing of their King, a yearly observance, and for the settling of other matters. When they had gathered, Black Fox greeted the Animals:-- "Good Year to you, Subjects, and much eating, each unto his own way of life!" Whisky-Jack preened his mischievous head, ruffled his blue-gray feathers, broke into the harsh, cackling laugh of the Jay, and sneered, "Eating! always of eating; and never a more beautiful song to you, or--" "Less thieving to you, eh, Mister Jay," growled Muskwa. "You who come by your eating easily have it not so heavily on your mind as we Toilers." "Well, let me see," continued Black Fox, with reflective dignity, "here Ye have all assembled; for form's sake I will call your names." From Mooswa to Wapoos each one of the Dwellers as his name was spoken stepped forward in the circle and saluted the King. "Jack has been a faithful messenger," said Black King; "but where are Cougar, and Buffalo, and Eagle?" "They had notice, thank you, Majesty, for your praise. Cougar says the mountain is his King, and that he wouldn't trust himself among a lot of Plain Dwellers." "He's a Highway Robber and an Outlaw, anyway, so it doesn't matter," asserted Carcajou. "You wouldn't talk that way if he were at your throat, my fat little Friend," lisped Whisky-Jack. "Buffalo is afraid of Man, and won't come; nearly all his brothers have been killed off, and he is hiding in the Spruce woods near Athabasca Lake." "I saw a herd of them last Summer," declared Mooswa; "fine big fellows they have grown to be, too. Their hair is longer, and blacker, and curlier than it was when they were on the Plains. There's no more than fifty of them left alive in all the North woods; it's awful to think of how they were slaughtered. That's why I stick to the Timber Boundaries."

"A cursed be ye, but through thy daughters trine, scary and wary be of this signーfor one man shall not satisfy they, kill will thy kin, forever slay, slay, slay!"

As her words stopped traffic, with a nearby horse falling dead, and out of fear of just what Eunice had said, Darius and Leda, hoping to fend off the curse, left town on the most convenient train, scared by Eunice's verse.

Eunice retreated to the Delphine House, never to be seen on the village streets again. Some would say it was her that was seen by hunters' in the night, sacrificing animals to the moon and running naked through the woods. But for the most part, this was a myth to scare little children away from the Delphine homestead, or so the adults agreed as a comfort to themselves.

Eunice's solitary outburst condemned her to a most lonely life and she remained hidden in the house, terrified by her own eruption of that day; that single day that seemed to have changed her life, forever. But none of this had been her intended outcome. In kindness and remorse, she sent money to the dead horse's owner with an apology. Only after the money was returned wrapped in a prayer of serenity for her, did she understand the gravity of her situation.

In her latter days, Eunice was reported to have leapt to her death from the upper most room of the Delphine House in her finest black taffeta dress and pearls; spiraling downwards with a sharp rock and hard earth breaking her fall and cracking her skull. The ground upon which her blood spilled was rumored to have never recovered and to this day, the cursed soil bears the silhouette of her fallen figure.

In fear, and hoping to leave the curse behind them, knowing that the town's folk would forever remind them of the incident, Leda and Darius fled to a nearby parish and started their family, doing their best to forget the past by making a new life for themselves. But, with the birth of Leda's third daughter, Andra, and still with no son in sight, both began to fear the worse and Eunice's verse and so they began trying to find honorable suitors for their daughters when they became of age, suitors who had not heard of Eunice's dire prediction. However, because of Helen's remarkable beauty, when she came of age, she did not lack for a suitor. Rumor had it that every available bachelor, regardless of age, within five parishes, had attempted to court herーand that at one point, she had even been kidnapped by two brothers. But it was not until the dreamy-eyed, fair-haired Deutsche gentleman from New Orleans, Laus Menes, arrived, that her hand was given and she was carried away to his house in order to turn it into a home.

And the joy of the moment was not lost on Darius and Leda, for within nine months, Leda gave birth to a son, Castor Faye Archer. Thus, they began to feel more secure and somewhat spared from Eunice Delphine's iron-willed and feral curse, and that their son would be spared the indignity that they had known.

And so, that is precisely (the search for a decent suitor) how Nestra came to be on that dusty road to Miceny, and to be the obsession of Schylus Masters on that fateful day. Darius and Leda were on their way to Miceny to chaperone Nestra and Tanner, when their shiny black lacquered buggyーa Surrey with red spokes, red cushions, and white tasselsーwheel broke, sending the three into a ditch with the buggy itself came to rest on its side. Schylus who had been approaching them, after flipping up the brim of his hat, viewed the entire spectacle incredulously, and immediately rushed to their aid.

It is said that upon touching Nestra's hand, a small spark erupted in Schylus' finger that echoed in his heart which truly electrified the moment for him, as he helped to extricate Nestra from the ditch.

Dreary, desolate Spectra City is infested with thieves, criminals, low-lives and gruesome creatures in black cloaks that roam the poor districts and snatch people from the streets. Corrupt city officials deny rumors of chanters, citizens who possess strange, inexplicable, and dangerous powers that lay waste to the city and battle each other in the streets. The Creeds and Mobleys, Spectra City’s wealthiest and most powerful families, control the city’s officials and command the police forces. Only Chant, an underground organization of chanters, and their leader, tenacious Assistant District Attorney Balthazar Barbosa, are willing to stand up to the depraved chanters, capricious Mobleys and ruthless Creeds who bend the city to their will. But the Chanters are going missing one by one, only to reappear weeks later as a wasted, gibbering, inhuman shell with their powers mysteriously sucked out of them. When Cedric Knight is taken by the grisly creatures, his sister, Cerys, travels to Spectra City to find out what’s happened to him. As she investigates her brother‘s disappearance, Cerys meets handsome, inscrutable Lex Creed and his charming, devious brother, Nico, whom Barbosa and his Chanters suspect are behind the terrifying creature attacks. Cerys joins Chant’s crusade against the Creeds, becomes entangled in a decades old blood feud between the Creeds and Mobleys, and discovers an even more violent clash between brothers that threatens to shake Spectra City to the ground.

He’s undead, overweight, and can’t get a date

Vampire, nosferatu, creature of the nightーwhatever you call himーJules Duchon has lived (so to speak) in New Orleans far longer than there have been drunk coeds on Bourbon Street. Weighing in at a whopping four hundred and fifty pounds, swelled up on the sweet, rich blood of people who consume the fattiest diet in the world, Jules is thankful he can’t see his reflection in a mirror. When he turns into a bat, he can’t get his big ol’ butt off the ground.

What’s worse, after more than a century of being undead, he’s watched his neighborhood truly go to hellーand now, a new vampire is looking to drive him out altogether. See, Jules had always been an equal opportunity kind of vampire. And while he would admit that the blood of a black woman is sweeter than the blood of a white man, Jules never drank more than his fair share of either. Enter Malice X . Young, cocky, and black, Malice warns Jules that his days of feasting on sisters and brothers are over. He tells Jules he’d better confine himself to white victimsーor else face the consequences. And then, just to prove he isn’t kidding, Malice burns Jules’s house to the ground.

With the help of Maureen, the morbidly obese, stripper-vampire who made him, and Doodlebug, an undead cross-dresser who (literally) flies in from the coastーJules must find a way to contend with the hurdles that life throws at him . . . without getting a stake through the heart. It’s enough to give a man the blues.

Post-adolescent grunge fiction... Enter, one teenage blackmailer, one troubled band frontman, one questionably unresolved suicide, and an alternative religious history, for an irreverent and unpredictable swipe at youth culture, and the power of the small-time Media.

As the town's most notorious blackmailer, 19-year-old Kim Blackshields has plenty on her plate. Unscrupulous journalists trying to rummage through her stuff, two best friends and blood brothers whose main hobby is tapping phones - even in cohorts with the local police - and a younger brother also into blackmail, whose friends seem to think she's an easy target. And the small matter of the Halloween fiasco...

When the youth club Halloween event has to replace the live band at short notice, Kim tracks down The Hellraisers to step in, fronted by the charismatic, Harley-riding Alastair Brash. Who manages to live up to their name.

Not that anyone's complaining. The youngsters of Jericho already know far too much about explosives and burying things under concrete, and day-to-day Satanism is a way of life - even if no-one practises much these days (there's always the goat pinata on Black Mass to look forward to, at least). There's just an ongoing drama in the local Press about an unresolved 'suicide' of a young model, and who they're likely to pin the blame on.

But when the Halloween party ends violently and abruptly, and Alastair disappears leaving behind a large puddle of blood, it looks like there's more to this town than just nosey hacks, dodgy old videotapes, and blackmail...

Contains adult humour.
