As the Czech ambassador to the United States, H. E. Petr Gandalovic noted in his foreword to this book that Mla Rechcgl has written a monumental work representing a culmination of his life achievement as a historian of Czech America. The Encyclopedia of Bohemian and Czech American Biography is a unique and unparalleled publication. The enormity of this undertaking is reflected in the fact that it covers a universe, starting a few decades after the discovery of the New World, through the escapades and significant contributions of Bohemian Jesuits and Moravian brethren in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the mass migration of the Czechs after the revolutionary year of 1848, and up to the early years of the twentieth century and the influx of refugees from Nazism and communism. The encyclopedia has been planned as a representative, a comprehensive and authoritative reference tool, encompassing over 7,500 biographies. This prodigious and unparalleled encyclopedic vade mecum, reflecting enduring contributions of notable Americans with Czech roots, is not only an invaluable tool for all researchers and students of Czech American history but is also a carte blanche for the Czech Republic, which considers Czech Americans as their own and as a part of its magnificent cultural history.

Nancy Durrell was a woman famous for her silences. Ana?s Nin said 'I think often of Nancy's most eloquent silences, Nancy talking with her fingers, her hair, her cheeks, a wonderful gift. Music again.' As the first wife Lawrence Durrell, author of The Alexandria Quartet, it is perhaps surprising that she is an unknown entity, a constant presence in the biographies of Durrell and others in the Bloomsbury set, yet always a shadowy figure, beautiful and enigmatic.

But who was the woman who was with Durrell during the most important years of his development as a writer? Joanna Hodgkin decides to retrace her mother's fascinating story: the escape from her toxic and mysterious family; the years in bohemian literary London and Paris in the 1930s; marriage to Durrell and their discovery of the 'Eden' of pre-war Corfu and her desperate struggle to survive in Palestine alone with a small child as the British Mandate collapsed. Amateurs in Eden is a fascinating biography of a literary marriage and of an unusual woman struggling to live an independent life.

Gay never recorded an album, never won a Juno. His music existed in the moment, appreciated by the few who were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. For the rest of us, those late-night jam sessions in a shack in an alley on the bad side of Edmonton never happened. We never got to hear him play the Cole Porter songs he loved with Carlos Montoya, never got to watch the ashes build dangerously on the end of his menthol cigarette. And when Frank Gay died, only the guitar players gently wept. ー Shelley Youngblut Until his death in 1982, Edmonton luthier and guitarist Frank Gay built guitars for several famous musicians, including country stars Johnny Cash, Don Gibson, Webb Pierce, and Hank Snow. He captivated listeners with his singular talent on guitar and other instruments, and was well known within the music industry. Trevor Harrison’s detective work uncovers the story of this private, charming, and bohemian man, doing a tremendous service to Canadian culture and music history. Harrison pieces together Frank Gay’s life through interviews with people who knew him and saw him play. Very few recordings of him playing exist, and the sparse accounts of Gay’s life and work raise more questions than they answer. Musicians and instrument makers, as well as those interested in Canadian music or Edmonton’s colourful past, will be fascinated by this biography of western Canadian luthier, musician, and guitar virtuoso Frank Gay.

In The Bohemian Flats, Mary Relindes Ellis’s rich, imaginative gift carries us from the bourgeois world of fin de si?cle Germany to a vibrant immigrant enclave in the heart of the Midwest and to the killing fields of World War I.

Shell shock, as it was called, lands Raimund Kaufmann in a London hospital, a victim of the war but also of his own, and his brother’s, efforts to get out of Germany and build a new life in America. While his recovery eludes him, his memory returns us to Minneapolis, to the Flats, a milling community on the Mississippi River, where Raimund and his brother Albert have sought respite from the oppressive hand of their older brother, now the master of the family farm and brewery. In Minnesota the brothers confront different forms of prejudice, but they also find a chance to remake their lives according to their own principles and wishesーuntil the war makes their German roots inescapable.

Following these lives, The Bohemian Flats conjures both the sweep of irresistible history and the intimate reality of a man, and a family, caught up in it. From a nineteenth-century German farm to the thriving, wildly diverse immigrant village below Minneapolis on the Mississippi to the European front in World War I, and returning to twentieth-century Americaーthis is a story that takes a reader to the far reaches of human experience and the depths of the human heart.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Changing Places Society, Culture, and Territory in the Saxon-Bohemian Borderlands, 1870-1946【電子書籍】[ Caitlin Murdock ]

"Changing Places is an interesting meditation on the varying identities and rights claimed by residents of borderlands, the limits placed on the capacities of nation-states to police their borders and enforce national identities, and the persistence of such contact zones in the past and present. It is an extremely well-written and engaging study, and an absolute pleasure to read."
---Dennis Sweeney, University of Alberta

"Changing Places offers a brilliantly transnational approach to its subject, the kind that historians perennially demand of themselves but almost never accomplish in practice."
---Pieter M. Judson, Swarthmore College

Changing Places is a transnational history of the birth, life, and death of a modern borderland and of frontier peoples' changing relationships to nations, states, and territorial belonging. The cross-border region between Germany and Habsburg Austria---and after 1918 between Germany and Czechoslovakia---became an international showcase for modern state building, nationalist agitation, and local pragmatism after World War I, in the 1930s, and again after 1945.

Caitlin Murdock uses wide-ranging archival and published sources from Germany and the Czech Republic to tell a truly transnational story of how state, regional, and local historical actors created, and eventually destroyed, a cross-border region. Changing Places demonstrates the persistence of national fluidity, ambiguity, and ambivalence in Germany long after unification and even under fascism. It shows how the 1938 Nazi annexation of the Czechoslovak "Sudetenland" became imaginable to local actors and political leaders alike. At the same time, it illustrates that the Czech-German nationalist conflict and Hitler's Anschluss are only a small part of the larger, more complex borderland story that continues to shape local identities and international politics today.

Caitlin E. Murdock is Associate Professor of History at California State University, Long Beach.

Jacket Credit: Cover art courtesy of the author

This would be the third book that I have written. Same as my first book, I was compelled to write about my experiences before and after. My purpose was for understanding and enlightenment to know the importance of transparency and knowledge of what goes on behind the closed doors that will create a difference or the end result of business matters and everyday occurrences. We live in a time of disconnect that is created for a purpose that will benefit a select few. Unfortunately, at the cost of the majority of all of us. Integrity and honor were thrown out the window years ago. Designer rules and regulations amidst shady operations joined the mix to make possible the nefarious transactions to be put in place. Now all the necessities in life would become profitable for those who desire control of their own destiny at the cost of others. Knowing the importance of knowledge to build a secure foundation for life and the future for all. United we stand. Divided we will continue to struggle and fall. We can do and be better. It is time. Our children deserve a promising future. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Sagebrush Bohemian Mark Twain's Wild Years【電子書籍】[ Nigey Lennon ]
Most people, including literary biographers and other people who should know better, have a persistent image of Mark Twain as a dyspeptic geezer in a white suit, sourly regarding the world from a rocking chair on his New England porch. Not surprisingly, when Nigey Lennon’s groundbreaking biography, "The Sagebrush Bohemian", originally presented its startlingly irreverent revelations about Twain’s formative years, it aroused a firestorm of controversy. Previous Twain biographers had virtually ignored the pivotal period (1861-1869) during which Samuel Clemens migrated to the Western territory; learned the craft of writing in newspaper offices, saloons, and worse places; visited the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands; became a public speaker; adopted (or misappropriated) his famous monicker; and acquired his trademark moustache. Beneath its breezy, eminently readable surface, "The Sagebrush Bohemian" digests acres of primary sources to provide a penetrating, ribald, and hilarious look at the origins of Mark Twain, not to mention the Zeitgeist of the lusty and lawless era that produced him. “[The Sagebrush Bohemian] offers an efficient and lighthearted introduction to the years in which Sam Clemens transformed himself into the writer who made the American language and American irreverence the stuff of literature.?? -- The New York Times Book Review “With great good humor, Lennon recounts Twain’s acquisition of a craft lost in his counterparts today...a different look at Samuel Clemens.?? -- Booklist “A delight to read.?? -- San Francisco Review of Books画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】A Bohemian in a Precarious Belfry Volume I: Poetry & Prose【電子書籍】[ David Scott ]

About the Book
David Scott’s A Bohemian in a Precarious Belfry is a philosophic treatment of life and death via his collection of poems, short stories, essays, and random dialogs ? the latter almost as would be experienced by an eavesdropper. It is an unusual reflection on, and examination of, friendship, enmity, joy, strife, hope, and what life does to us in the form of favor and brute random chance, and what we do with one another in the form of friendship, love, loyalty and, too, malevolence and betrayal. All is weaved within fates good and bad, with renewal as experienced and factored into the general human condition.
Here is an avenue to a reexamination of life and death and what these constitute: The enthrallments, the potentials to be realized, the limitations, the acceptances, all within the slow grind of uncertain futures… and certain deaths. Perhaps a custom adjustment to living ? and dying ? is possible. With the removal of political programming, religious indoctrinations, cultural overlays and expectations, and simple fear, there is at least a potential for a new appreciation, a new capacity, for living… living each… any… life.

About the Author
David Scott is private and iconoclastic on one hand, and on the other quite social at times; one may wonder how a “bohemian” managed to serve 12 years inside the strictures of the U.S. Army. Mr. Scott himself says, “Ask me: I encountered the most diverse field of people in life during my Army years.”
After, Scott was an I.T. executive and authored the MBA-text, I.T. WARS: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium. After that foray into non-fiction, he published his first fiction: The Grim Grind of Life: A PI’s strange bounces through a surfeit of eateries, juke joints, and dark doorways.
He also enjoys crawling through jazz and blues clubs seeking fellow travelers. His love of music has led to a considerable collection of LPs, 78s, Edison discs, and vintage music reproduction equipment from the last century.

What is a Sub-Bohemian? A Sub-Bohemian is one who lives an unconventional lifestyle. He has artistic interests which drive his unconventionality. But, in our Superhero's case, his unconventionality is also driven by the necessity to avoid being crushed.

Sub-Bohemian's are the smallest people in the world. Well, actually there is only one Sub-Bohemian, our Superhero. So he is the smallest person in the world. "Oh," you think, "he's a midget". No, he's smaller than a midget. "A Leprechaun, then?" No, even smaller. "A Trusvariankoponomian - the smallest of the wee people?" No, he's even tinier than that.

The Sub-Bohemian is no taller than a small ant, but he's even stronger. "Oh, like "Up and at-em, Atom Ant!"?" No, he's not an ant. And he's even stronger.

The Sub-Bohemian has no idea why he's so strong - other than that it keeps him alive. He has no purpose in life - other than to survive. He has no idea why there are no other Sub-Bohemians or how he came into being, since he's the only one. As such, he's the perfect candidate to become our Superhero. I suppose I should give the Sub-Bohemian a name, especially since he is our Superhero. His Super-title will be "The Sub-Bohemian".

For a name, let's use Paul. What's wrong with Paul? Not Bohemian enough you say - how would you know? What about John? There you go with that look again. Lute? Closer, but not close enough? OK, we'll call him Pavlik-Pavlik - Pavlik means Small in Bohemian, so Pavlik-Pavlik means Small-Small or Very-Small.

Introducing: Pavlik-Pavlik! The Sub-Bohemian! Our Superhero!

"Using accessible language, Paul Hosch describes the twenty years he worked as a fingernail artist in Hawaii's burgeoning tourist industry. He pulls back the curtain on the voracious merchants, clueless tourists, talented entertainers, and exotic locals that we never get to see in tourist guidebooks. His internal dialogue is honest and endearing in this stirring and colorful narrative. I wish more writers told stories this way." GHHーBeta Reviewer

"Paul Hosch's latest e-book offers readers a new and different view of the islands; one they will not soon forget. The Fingernail King takes us back to Waikiki Beach of the 1980s, in which a recent art school graduate creates a tourist craze by painting tiny tropical scenes on fingernails…"

After working for several years as an unpaid volunteer for a yoga organization, a penniless thirty-year-old is offered part-time employment in a halfway house and two months' free rent in Hawaii. Having no other means of support, he gladly accepts the job offer and lands in Honolulu with only a tattered suitcase, an old guitar, and barely enough money to stay alive. The year is 1976.

Longing for a career as an artist, he answers a want ad in the local newspaper and is hired to decorate inexpensive shell jewelry in a famous Waikiki Beach shopping center. This leads to a lucrative gig painting Hawaiian scenes on fingernails, which surprisingly goes viral. Within a few short months, he becomes an established tourist attraction.

For the next twenty years, the young man works in one of the busiest tourist resorts in the world, and as an unexpected perk, he stumbles into many strange and exotic romantic entanglements. While struggling to balance his meditation and yoga practice with the overwhelming allure of Waikiki, he finds it increasingly difficult to resist the worldly pleasures vying for his attention. The Fingernail King is the humorous and sometimes poignant story of youthful indulgence, occasional overindulgence, and eventual redemption.

After reading this unique e-memoir, you'll never see "paradise" the same way again!

ABOUT THE BOHEMIAN SPIRIT TRILOGY

A creative kid on the Jersey Shore performs well on IQ tests but struggles in school with undiagnosed learning difficulties; his worst subjects are math and science. Jersey Goes West opens in 1951 when he is sent away to a Jewish summer camp at four years old and ends in 1969 when his friends are arrested trying to sell fifty pounds of marijuana to a federal agent in Haight-Ashbury. Having narrowly avoided serious trouble, he renounces his life of crime and looks to Eastern philosophy for his future.

In his second book, Undercover in India, we see him as a young aspirant at the beginning of a serious yoga and meditation practice. He meets a venerable Indian swami and tours the US as his assistant. After the tour, the swami convinces him to sell his beloved VW bus and buy a plane ticket to India. Leaving the country for the first time, he stops over in London, Cairo, South Yemen, and lands in sweltering Bombay, where he is surprised to see cows roaming around the runway. For the next year, he lives in the ashram of an all-knowing guru and becomes a trusted disciple. But when his guru is suddenly arrested on politically motivated murder conspiracy charges, he enters an obscure monastery with no electricity or running water. He later goes undercover with wandering sadhus in the holy city of Varanasi.

The third book of the series, The Fingernail King, chronicles the next twenty years of his life, in which he runs a small but successful business painting Hawaiian scenes on fingernails in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii.

Letters that have been preserved are the basis of Regina Gottschalk´s research. By means of these letters, she reconstructs the fate of a Jewish family from the Bohemian Forest during the years of Nazi terror. The Getreuers and their four children are the only Jewish family in the small village Schwanenbr?ckl. Due to the Munich Agreement in 1938, their homeland is annexed by the German Reich; the family is forced to flee to Prague, where they hope to be safe. The adult children manage to emigrate to the USA, their parents are to join them later. The family members that have been torn apart try to keep in touch by writing letters. From now on, waiting for news determines their life. Finally, the parents and almost all other relatives left behind in Hitler´s sphere of power are deported and killed. For a long time, the children keep waiting for news ? in vain … Based on the family´s correspondence and other contemporary documents, Regina Gottschalk describes in detail the humiliating living conditions and the emotional strain of people suffering under the anti-Jewish laws: their longing for their children abroad, their hope to survive "these hard times", their fears in the face of the imminent deportations, and their trust in God, which they keep up until the end.
