A total joy' SARAH WINMAN

____________________________________________________________________________

In a small corner of a field in Wales, Tiffany Murray is hiding with Boggle the dog, dreaming of her mum's moussaka, blackberry and apple crumble, and, if she's lucky, ice-cold lemonade. A sheep bleats. The smell of hay tickles her nose. The twang of a guitar and crack of a snare carry on the breeze.

It's the late 1970s and Tiff lives with her mum, Joan, at Rockfield, the iconic recording studios. This place of legend, where some of the most famous rock albums of all time were recorded, is the background to a freewheeling, ever-changing whirlwind of a childhood. Tiff's days are spent running around the farm, making friends with local wildlife and helping out with the endless array of dishes her mum creates to keep the bands fed. She's looking for a dog, she's looking for a father; but the one constant throughout is her and Joan, building an unconventional family in the most unlikely of locations.

My Family and Other Rock Stars is Tiff's remarkable, truly unique story of growing up in a rural idyll, of Cordon Bleu cookery and of a childhood where the chances of bumping into Freddie Mercury playing piano, or a group of Hell's Angels turning up to record for Lemmy, or even the hope of David Bowie appearing, were as normal as hopscotch and homework.
____________________________________________________________________________

'You will fall in love with Tiff, her hilarious non-nonsense mother Joan, and a cast of hungry rock stars from Freddie Mercury to Siouxsie Sioux. An utter trea****t' RACHEL JOYCE

'Full of pop gossip that'll leave you starry-eyed, and written with a warmth and precision you'll want to savour for as long as you can . . .
These reminiscences are an intimate account of Mila Rechcgls saga, his fascinating life, his varied and successful professional career, and his highly visible public life, encompassing some fifty years, since the earliest childhood in a small hamlet in northeastern rural Bohemia to his government career in the Worlds Capital, Washington, DC and spending his retirement years in active scholarship and voluntary work for non-profit organizations. He views his life as a chess game, in which he confronts various challenges head-on, usually ending with a checkmate in his favor.

He describes his idyllic youth at family mill, in an area known as Bohemian paradise, talks fondly of his parents and grandparents, the time he spent in a one-class rural school, followed by eight years in gymnasium in Mlada Boleslav, four during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and four in the post-War era under the communist threat. After successful escape from communist Czechoslovakia, he immigrates to America, spending his greenhorn years in New York City, working in a glass jewelry factory. He gets a scholarship, is accepted by a prestigious Ivy League school (Cornell) and with skimpy English manages getting his bachelors degree in biochemistry in two and half years, followed by Masters and Ph.D. Gets hired by the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda where he conducts some pioneering research on enzyme turnover and later is offered training in science policy and administration, leading to his appointment as Special Assistant for Nutrition and Health, and later is put in charge of research at the US State Departments Agency for International Development.

Beyond the call of duty, he publishes numerous books and in his spare time, devotes energies to organizing an international Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences into a first-class institution and does premier research on immigration history.

"Reading Mr. Hosch's memoirs made me feel as if I was part of every scene, whether living the idealistic hippie life in San Francisco or alongside the colorful characters in the ashrams of India. It's the agenda-less storytelling of a trusted friend who never manipulates the reader or leaves anything uncomfortable out of his narrative to make himself look good." RSF, Auteur, Social Media influencer.

"The writing transported me from my home in Miami straight to the Jersey Shore, Berkeley, and San Francisco. Jersey Goes West is a compelling mix of cynicism, hope, and humor." D.T. Beta Reader

An intelligent boy with undiagnosed learning disabilities is virtually shut out of the education system due to his lackluster grades in math and science. His parents and teachers accuse him of laziness, although his real problem is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and dyscalculia (trouble with numbers).

In college, he experiences an epiphany on LSD and realizes that there is more to life than a dreary middle-class existence. In the following months, he grows his hair long, dresses in bellbottoms and army jackets, and becomes the most notorious marijuana dealer on his college campus. When the college ejects him for poor grades (among other things), the young man and his best friend take a cross-country road trip in an old Mercury Comet and end up in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district in 1969, aspiring to become famous musicians.

He attends Grateful Dead concerts at the Fillmore West, finds disappointment at Woodstock, witnesses the Stones' ill-fated gig at the Altamont Racetrack, and gets busted (and acquitted) on drug charges. Things get tense when some new acquaintances get busted trying to sell fifty pounds (two shopping carts full) of marijuana to a federal drug agent. He realizes that if he doesn't change his outlaw life, he could be next.

ABOUT THE BOHEMIAN SPIRIT TRILOGY

A creative kid on the Jersey Shore performs well on IQ tests but struggles in school with undiagnosed learning difficulties; his worst subjects are math and science. Jersey Goes West opens in 1951 when he is sent away to a Jewish summer camp at four years old and ends in 1969 when his friends are arrested trying to sell fifty pounds of marijuana to a federal agent in Haight-Ashbury. Having narrowly avoided serious trouble, he renounces his life of crime and looks to Eastern philosophy for his future.

In his second book, Undercover in India, we see him as a young aspirant at the beginning of a serious yoga and meditation practice. He meets a venerable Indian swami and tours the US as his assistant. After the tour, the swami convinces him to sell his beloved VW bus and buy a plane ticket to India. Leaving the country for the first time, he stops over in London, Cairo, South Yemen, and lands in sweltering Bombay, where he is surprised to see cows roaming on the runway. For the next year, he lives in the ashram of an all-knowing guru and becomes a trusted disciple. But when his guru is suddenly arrested on politically motivated murder conspiracy charges, he enters an obscure monastery with no electricity or running water, he later goes undercover with wandering sadhus in the holy city of Varanasi.

The third book of the series, The Fingernail King, chronicles the next twenty years of his life, in which he runs a small but successful business painting Hawaiian scenes on fingernails in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. In this e-book, he spills the inside tea on the clever scammers and con artists who make a living cheating naive visitors, year after year.

Ida Nettleship was a flamboyant Bohemian who gave up a promising artistic career to marry Augustus John. She had five pregnancies in just six years, lived with Augustus and his mistress in a m?nage ? trois, and died exhausted in childbirth aged thirty. Ida’s story of unconventional love is equalled by two other Bohemian women of the same era: Picasso’s first love Fernande Olivier, who was prominent in the Paris art scene, and the writer Sophie Brzeska, who lived with the artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, nineteen years her junior ? he would die in the First World War and Sophie’s slow descent into mental instability would begin. Bohemian Lives follows the achievements and sacrifices of the three women and how their lives overlapped and contrasted, in education, childbirth, illness, marriage ? and psychological disintegration. All three women had a huge influence on their more famous partner and challenged the accepted model of male?female relations of the time. At once touching and harrowing, their struggles for recognition in their own right hold a mirror up to the prejudices of an age ? and what being ‘bohemian’ really meant.

The Emphatically Queer Career of Perkins Harnly is the story of a Nebraska-born artist (1901-1986) who over the course of his long life crossed paths with a staggering array of famous and infamous personalities, including Sarah Bernhardt; Paul Swan, a.k.a. “The Most Beautiful Man in the World,” who made women swoon when he danced in his tiny leopard-skin tunic; Rose O’Neill, the free-living artist who invented the Kewpie; William Seabrook, author and occasional cannibal who for better or worse introduced Americans to the zombie. The narrative traces Harnly’s steps from remotest Nebraska through silent-era Hollywood, post-revolutionary Mexico, Depression New York, wartime Tinsel Town, queer Los Angeles in the repressive 1950s, and, in the 1970s, all around Europe and South America, where Harnly traveled to visit the last resting places of famous people, from Vladimir Lenin to Oscar Wilde, Queen Victoria, and Eva Peron.

Patriot desires but one reward: that he should live to see his labors bear fruit. On January 12, 1917, thousands of Czechs in the United States found time in the midst of their joyous celebration of the dawn of Bohemia’s independence to remember the grand old man of Bohemia, Thomas Garigue Masaryk. He it was who put the ancient kingdom of Bohemia once more upon the map of Europe. On the day when the Allies’ answer to President Wilson was published, he surely was happy, for he had proof that his titanic labors, his tremendous personal and family sacrifices were not made in vain. Bohemia's right to independence was clearly recognized by the Allies and the liberation of the country from foreign domination was made one of the conditions of peace. For centuries no one in Bohemia did more than dream of independence. This Slav country had been subject to the Hapsburgs for so many generations and so thoroughly was it repressed that even the boldest spirits among its leaders regretfully put aside all thoughts of absolute freedom as visionary and aimed merely at securing for the lands of the Bohemian crown the widest possible autonomy within the confines of the Austrian Empire. On several occasions during the long reign of Francis Joseph the Czechs came near to the realization of these moderate ambitions, but always the emperor drew back unable to give up his ambition to be the German ruler of German or Germanized subjects. Of late years the struggle of the Czechs for a certain amount of liberty at home and for the right to participate in the government of the Empire was growing more and more hopeless. The general European situation was undergoing a change greatly to the disadvantage of Bohemia. The Hapsburg realm was losing its standing as a great power, due mainly to the constant internal dissensions and language disputes, while the truly national states of Europe were growing in population, wealth and military power. Above all Germany, excelling in industrial and military preparedness, aggressive and domineering, was looking for new worlds to conquer. America was out of the question, for the United States was guarding jealously against the invasion of the two western continents through its Monroe doctrine. Germany’s African colonies were unsuitable for colonization by white men and constituted merely a financial burden. Only Asia offered an undeveloped fieldーthe ramshackle Turkish Empireーand to that land of promise the road from Germany led through the dual empire and the Balkan states. Prague was the first stage on the Berlin-Bagdad highway, and the Czech people were the first obstacle to German expansion. It was a part of Germany’s plan to reduce Austria to complete subserviency by the exaltation of its German minority and a more thorough repression of the Slav and Latin races, with the assistance of the Magyars. There were not lacking statemen in Bohemia who saw whither things were tending. Two of them stand out above the other Czech patriots: Dr. Charles Kramar and Professor Thomas G. Masaryk. Kramar, the leader of the Young Czech party, for years representative of the middle class of Bohemia, yielded to no one in his devotion to the race from which he sprang or in the sincerity of his intentions to serve the Czech people to the best of his great ability. But being a wealthy manufacturer, a “practical” man, intent upon gaining results in the Vienna parliament, he failed to draw the only conclusion necessitated by the changed European situation which he so well understood. He realized that Germany was “peacefully penetrating” the Danube monarchy, that the very existence of the Czech nation was imperiled; on the floor of the parliament and in the Austrian delegation he admonished the powers ruling in Vienna that the fate of the Empire and of the dynasty was just as much at stake as the fate of Bohemia, should German designs prevail.

If it were possible to compare the greatest literature of the world with that of a small and little-known country, it might be said that the "Question of the Manuscripts" is the necessary beginning of every account of Bohemian literature, just as the "Homeric Question" must form the commencement of every work on the literature of Greece. The "Question of the Manuscripts" turns on the genuineness of two documents which first became known at the beginning of the present century, and were supposed to be the most ancient writings in the Bohemian language. These manuscripts have from the first attracted great notice, and they gave a great impulse to the revival of Bohemian literature in the present century. The Manuscript of K?niginhof is also by no means devoid of poetical merit, and these documents will therefore always have to be mentioned, even should it be finally proved that both were forgeries. The manuscript that was first discovered is the so-called Rukopis Kralodvorsky or Manuscript of K?niginhof. It was stated that this document had been found by Venceslas Hanka (afterwards librarian of the Bohemian Museum) in the tower of the deanery church of K?niginhof, or Kr?lov? Dvur, on September 16, 1817. It was further declared that Hanka's attention had first been attracted to the manuscript by Bor?, chaplain at K?niginhof, who was previously aware of its existence. The discovery at K?niginhof immediately created great sensation even in countries very distant from Bohemia, a circumstance all the more worthy of note as Bohemia was then even more unknown than it now is. Goethe was greatly interested in the new discovery, to which he frequently refers in his writings, and he himself published a translation, or rather adaptation, of the Kytice (Nosegay), one of the lyrical poems of the Manuscript of K?niginhof. Numerous translations of these poems into English, German, Polish, Russian, Italian, and other languages soon appeared, and the interest was of course yet far greater in Bohemia itself, where they became the recognised models for the Bohemian writers who were then beginning to revive the national language. Though some doubts as to the genuineness of the manuscript were expressed from the moment of its appearance, yet the majority of the Bohemian learned men, including such authorities as Palack? and ?afa?ik, firmly maintained its ancient origin. Within the last twenty years a change has taken place. Perhaps the majority of the Bohemian philologists of the present day believe the manuscript to be a forgery, that is to say, that it was written at the beginning of the present century. Its genuineness has been attacked from the pal?ographic point of view; it has been attempted to prove anachronisms in the manuscript; and it has been asserted that it contains verbal formations unknown to the early Bohemian language. A chemical examination of the manuscript has, however, proved that it differs in no way from authentic Bohemian manuscripts of the fourteenth century, and it can therefore now be affirmed that the Manuscript of K?niginhof cannot be attacked from the point of view of pal?ography. The defenders of the manuscript have been less successful in their endeavours to disprove the statement that it contains anachronisms, which could not have been committed by a writer of the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The almost complete darkness which surrounds the condition of the Slavonic race in very early times renders it very difficult to form a judgment on many of the disputed points. The defenders of the manuscript also lay stress on its similarity to undoubtedly genuine collections of early Bohemian writings, such as those known as the Manuscript of K?niggr?tz and that of St. Vitus. It is true that the contents of these collections differ somewhat from those of the manuscript, and are mainly of a religious character.
