**An old New York Catskills hotel is converted into a Reeducation center for star #MeToo offenders in a story full of cunning and craft, double meanings and doppelgangers.

A finalist for the National Jewish Book Award strikes again with another brilliant satireーa treat for readers of Philip Roth, Dara Horn, Nathan Englander, and others.**

Somewhere in the Catskills there’s a camp, it’s called Camp Jeff. The place is named for Jeffrey Epstein, not that Jeffrey Epstein, this is the good Jeffrey Epstein, a benefactor who wants his name on the building, though the bad one’s not entirely irrelevant to this story. Tova Reich’s newest novel, on the heels of her award-winning Mother India is a raucous and biting tale of a reeducation camp for alleged sex offenders. Reich’s verbal blade is sharp and she slashes with it, but not without the sensitivity that such incisiveness requires. Camp Jeff is a work in Reich’s signature satirical mode, an unhindered indictment of both #MeToo and therapeutic culture, and at the same time is also a deeply considered work of psychological portraiture and an examination of love, faith, and affection in American culture.

The Four Corners in Camp【電子書籍】[ Amy Ella Blanchard ]

The four Corners were occupying the four corners of the room. This may seem a rather peculiar statement until you realize that the first four Corners were called Nan, Mary Lee, Jack and Jean. Nan, the eldest, was bent over a table by the window in the west corner, Mary Lee was standing before the mirror in the east corner, Jack was sprawled out on the rug in the north corner, and Jean was in the south corner doing nothing in particular and looking abstractedly into space. The last mentioned was the first to make a remark. “I think Washington is the most beautiful city in the world,” she said moving over to the window and gazing out at the avenue of trees which were fast turning to sunny yellow and brilliant green. “Not lovelier than M?nchen, dear little M?nchen,” responded Nan. “Nor prettier than Paris,” put in Jack. “Well, I am not sure myself but Jean is right,” Mary Lee asserted. “If it isn’t already the loveliest city it soon will be. Of course it isn’t quite as symmetrical as it might be, and all the funny little frame houses stuck in between stately mansions make it still look as if it wasn’t finished, but time will mend that.” “It is like a country girl who comes to town wearing shabby gloves and shoes with a nice tailor-made gown,” Nan suggested. “Of course, after a while, when she has lived long enough, she will be quite finished in her dress, but now she still shows that she is young and a little provincial.” “What a way to put it, Nan,” said Mary Lee. “It is the way it impresses me,” returned her sister. “Didn’t you notice how raggety and taggety everything looked over here in our own country after Europe? How the fences and stretches of unkempt lots seemed so incomplete, and the poorer houses seemed little and mean instead of being picturesque, and how such things had a tumble-down raw sort of look? Of course I don’t say it will always be so, and in a short hundred years we shall be quite a sumptuous-appearing country, but as yet though we may be important looking we are not very picturesque. Think of those old, old palaces in Venice. Think of those castles along the Rhine, and all the ancient buildings that show history in every feature. Yes, I must say that though we look prosperous we also look painfully new.”

Camp Century The Untold Story of America's Secret Arctic Military Base Under the Greenland Ice【電子書籍】[ Henry Nielsen ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Camp Century The Untold Story of America's Secret Arctic Military Base Under the Greenland Ice【電子書籍】[ Henry Nielsen ]

At the height of the Cold War, the United States Army secretly began work on a base embedded deep in the Greenland ice cap: Camp Century. Officially defined as a scientific research station, this facility had an undisclosed purpose: to aim up to 600 nuclear warheads, buried in the ice, at the Soviet Union. In 1966, just six years after the camp was established, the United States gave up this provocative strategy and abandoned the base. Despite its brief life, Camp Century has been the cause of controversies from diplomatic relations between the United States and its Arctic allies, Denmark and Greenland, to the risks of radioactive waste abandoned at the site.

This book is the first comprehensive account of the U.S. Army’s “city under the ice.” Beginning with the Truman administration’s vision of military superiority in the Arctic and continuing through present-day concerns over the effects of climate change, Kristian H. Nielsen and Henry Nielsen unravel the extraordinary history of this clandestine installation. Drawing on sources including top-secret memos and never-before-seen photographic evidence, they follow the intertwining threads of high-level politics, ice-core research, media representations, daily life beneath the ice, and the specter of long-buried environmental problems that will one day resurface. Camp Century reveals a hidden chapter of Cold War historyーand why, as the Greenland ice cap slowly melts, this story is not yet over.

NEW EDITION, REVISED AND UPDATED Christine Pelosi presents leadership lessons from the campaign trail from a diverse array of over forty public figures, lending advice for anyone who wants to run for office, advocate for a cause, or win a public policy issue. This book draws from her leadership “boot camps” conducted in over thirty American states and in three foreign countries, working with thousands of volunteers and dozens of successful candidates for office from city council to US congress. Campaign Boot Camp 2.0 is basic training for future leaders who hear a call to serviceーa voice of conscience that springs from their vision, ideas, and valuesーand want to translate that call into positive change. Pelosi outlines the seven essential steps to winning: identify your call to service, define your message, know your community, build your leadership teams, raise the money, connect with people, and mobilize to win. Each chapter concludes with a “Get Real” exercise so readers can personalize and integrate these ideas into individual efforts. In this edition, Pelosi updates the book’s “Call to Service” profiles of political leaders and their calls to service; details the expanding role of social media, the Internet, and technology as message multipliers; explores challenges unique to women candidates; and expands on the power of volunteers.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Imperial Bandits Outlaws and Rebels in the China-Vietnam Borderlands【電子書籍】[ Bradley Camp Davis ]

The Black Flags raided their way from southern China into northern Vietnam, competing during the second half of the nineteenth century against other armed migrants and uplands communities for the control of commerce, specifically opium, and natural resources, such as copper. At the edges of three empires (the Qing empire in China, the Vietnamese empire governed by the Nguyen dynasty, and, eventually, French Colonial Vietnam), the Black Flags and their rivals sustained networks of power and dominance through the framework of political regimes. This lively history demonstrates the plasticity of borderlines, the limits of imposed boundaries, and the flexible division between apolitical banditry and political rebellion in the borderlands of China and Vietnam.

Imperial Bandits contributes to the ongoing reassessment of borderland areas as frontiers for state expansion, showing that, as a setting for many forms of human activity, borderlands continue to exist well after the establishment of formal boundaries.

Focused on Camp Ben Frankel (CBF), established in 1950 in southern Illinois, this book focuses on how a pluralist Jewish camp constructs meaningful experiences of Jewish “family” and Judaism for campersーand teaches them about Israel. Inspired by models of the earliest camps established for Jewish children in urban areas, CBF’s founders worked to create a camp that would appeal to the rural, often isolated Jewish families in its catchment area. Although seemingly on the periphery of American Jewish life, CBF staff and campers are revealed to be deeply entwined with national developments in Jewish culture and practice and, indeed, contributors to shaping them. This research highlights the importance of campers’ experiences of traditional elements of the Jewish “family” (an experience increasingly limited to time at camp), as well as the overarching importance of song.
Over the years, Judaism becomes constructed as fun, welcoming, and easy for campers, while Israel is presented in ways that are meant to be appropriate for a community camp. In the camp’s earliest decades, Israel was framed by “traditional” Zionist discourse; later, as community priorities shifted, the cause of Russian Jews was the focus. Most recently, as Israeli politics have been increasingly viewed as potentially divisive, the camp has adopted an “Israel-lite” approach, focusing on Israel as the Biblical homeland of the Jewish people and a place home to Jews who are similar to American Jews.
In sum, this study sheds light on how a small, rural, community camp contributes in significant ways to our understanding of American Jews, their Judaism, and their Zionism.

EXTRAIT:

Popular perceptions of life in Japanese prisoner of war camps are dominated by images of emaciated figures, engaged in slave labour, and badly treated by their captors. This book, based on extensive original research, shows that this view is quite wrong in relation to the large camp at Changi, which was the main POW camp in Singapore.

Holly Jenson is a senior at Madison High School. She's also a new student and nervous about fitting in. The senior class camping trip is coming up. The school holds this camping trip every year to teach students about surviving without modern technology. Cell phones, computers, Ipods, and any other electronic devices are not allowed. Holly's only friend is a neighbor named Erin. Erin cuts school regularly, so Holly is afraid that she won't go on the trip. Desperate for someone to hang out with, Holly begs her to go. The day before they depart, Erin cuts school yet again and Holly gets acquainted with another classmate, Mindy. They become fast friends and Holly agrees to hang out with her during the trip, since she suspects Erin of bailing out. Well, Erin makes it and she's not happy. Conflict arises immediately, which sets the tone for what's to become of the senior class.

At first, Holly fears that the trip will be a disaster with the popular kids being forced to share their cabins and interact with ones who they've bullied. But, then she's ecstatic when her crush Matt is in the same cabin as her, the hottest guy in school. Unfortunately, things turn deadly when the phones stop working and people start to disappear one by one. Holly, along with Mindy and Matt, start to realize that a killer is among the group.

They have spooky campfire stories over roasted marshmallows and hiking trips when students start to disappear. Everyone is ordered to stay in their cabins by the teachers who look after them, but then they go missing too.

Holly, along with Matt and Mindy, hatch a plan to go along with the Saturday Night dance which was planned from the beginning, for the students to attend on their last night there. If they are all in the same place, they feel that the killer would be easy to catch. But, things don't go as planned and Holly figures out who the killer is before it's revealed. The other students doubt her, but could she be right? As they try to hang on to their last breath, they do their best to take the killer down. That is, if they live long enough.

A LETTER From Douglas Carter to her mOther, Mrs. Robert Carter Greendale, Va., August ー, 19ー. My darling MOther: Words cannot express the joy and gratitude all of us feel that father is really getting well. I shall never forget the miserable time last spring when Dr. Wright came into the library where Helen and Nan and Lucy and I were sitting and told us of his very serious condition. I had felt he was in a very bad way but did not realize it was quite so dreadful. I am sure you did not, either. And when Dr. Wright said that you must take him on a long sea voyage and we understood that we were to be left behind, the bottom seemed to drop out of the universe. And now, dear mOther, I have a confession to make: You took for granted we were going to the springs when we wrote we were to spend the summer in the mountains, and we thought with all the worry you had about father, perhaps it was best to let you go on thinking it. Of course you did not dream of the necessity of our doing anything to make money as father had never told you much about his finances. Well, mOther dear, there was about 80 in the bank in father’s private account. Fortunately for the business, which Mr. Lane and Dick have carried on to the best of their ability, there was some more in another account, but we have managed without touching that. I hope I am not going to shock you now, but you shall have to know itーwe have rented our lovely home, furnished, for six months with privilege of a year, and we have sold the car, dismissed the servantsーall but Susan and Oscar, who are up here at Greendale with us. This is what might shock you: We are running a week-end boarding camp here in the mountains and the really shocking part of it isーwe are making money
