2019/5/3 発売輸入盤レーベル：QUERSTAND RECORDS収録曲：If there's a place to be called "pictorial" in a special way, then we should think of Untermhaus, a small settlement below Osterstein Castle in Gera, Eastern Thuringia. Small in dimensions, houses and old workshops are clustered between the river Weisse Elster and the mountains. They look like forgotten contemporary witnesses because their reference point, the old castle above them, is ruined. The so-called Mohrenplatz is the starting point of the steep ascent to the castle, a kind of entrance for the castle and still today keeping the charm of ancient times. At this place, we find one of the oldest and most beautiful churches of today's Gera: St. Mary's, and the birthplace of Otto Dix, one of the 20th century's most famous painters, is neighboring, too. The church must have been a source of impression for Dix, who spent his childhood there in Untermhaus: strong walls, a high wooden arch, and it's most special thing, the multi-colored winged altar dating from medieval times. The Gera-based ensemble diX commissioned a cantata on this altar to be composed by Peter Helmut Lang from Thuringia. Each picture of the altar was described musically in one movement and also became the central topic of a special service during the ecclesiastical year.

We became friends very quickly and a couple of years later played a benefit concert for a children's orchestra... I believe that in the life and career of a musician, luck plays an enormous role. The great piece of luck in my musical life has been my partnership with Yo-Yo. I learned most of the standard cello repertoire with him, but through our work together I also learned an enormous amount about all the other music that I was playing - and about sharing my love of music with audiences. Our approaches to learning a new work together started at opposite ends quite often. Yo-Yo always saw the big picture, he thought first about the emotional impact. I often started by asking why the third eighth note in bar 2 had a dot, and the fourth one didn't. Gradually, we met in the middle. For me, it was revelatory to work in his way, and I hope I did not annoy him too much with my persnickety questions! Our first recordings were the Beethoven Sonatas. We had played them in concert a number of times and thought that we could do a creditable performance on disc. I remember so well the thrill of seeing those LP covers; the pianist is now a white-haired old gentleman, and the cellist looks as young as ever! I am a great lover of Russian music, but never felt that I could play it properly. The albums of Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev are very special to me as they represent my attempts at music that I adore... When I look at the list of recordings that Yo-Yo and I have done together I feel enormously privileged to have shared in the journey of this unique artist. It was happenstance and great good fortune that gave me this gift, and I am grateful beyond measure for the time we have had together. I hope there are still some years left for me to keep learning from him, and that we continue to have fun exploring together." (Emanuel Ax)

The inclusion of the percussion helps to set this album apart. Similarly, this album is equal parts Gershwin, Bernstein, and Rodrigues. This step away from the strictly classical concerto displays Rodrigues' innate versatility and strength as an artist. It cannot be emphasized enough how the creative use of percussion transforms these classics - an effort not easily achieved, yet Rodrigues and her ensemble gracefully pull it off.

Ciacconaコメント:Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749) was a priest first and musician second: a 'gentiluomo di Trento' as he described himself on the title page of his Op.1 trio sonatas. Chamber music continued to be Bonporti's preferred creative outlet, at a time when cantatas and increasingly operas obtained wider favor, and his increasingly strenuous attempts to gain royal or aristocratic preferment by dedicating and sending his works to kings, queens and princes proved ever fruitless: he died as he worked, a humble cleric. Bonporti's gifts as a composer only began to be fully appreciated a century ago, and he can now be regarded among the most gifted north Italian composers of his generation, his music even worthy at points of being mistaken for Bach's, as it has been more than once in confused manuscript collections. The language of Corelli lies behind Bonporti's idiom in these trio sonatas, but his creative imagination ranged far and wide, not indebted to any local or popular idiom but always sympathetically conceived for his instruments, and for the violin in particular. The slow movements are more developed than most contemporary Italian comparisons; at all points Bonporti's imaginative harmony and lively part-writing can be enjoyed by any listener who is keen to look beyond the tried and tested trio sonata repertoire. Founded in 2006, Associazione Labirinti Armonici is an early-music ensemble of flexible formation, led by scholarship and close study of manuscripts and critical editions in it's revival of repertoire from the Baroque. Like Bonporti, the ensemble is based in the Trento region of Italy, making festival appearances and giving masterclasses in early music.Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749) was a priest first and musician second: a 'gentiluomo di Trento' as he described himself on the title page of his Op.1 trio sonatas. Chamber music continued to be Bonporti's preferred creative outlet, at a time when cantatas and increasingly operas obtained wider favor, and his increasingly strenuous attempts to gain royal or aristocratic preferment by dedicating and sending his works to kings, queens and princes proved ever fruitless: he died as he worked, a humble cleric. Bonporti's gifts as a composer only began to be fully appreciated a century ago, and he can now be regarded among the most gifted north Italian composers of his generation, his music even worthy at points of being mistaken for Bach's, as it has been more than once in confused manuscript collections. The language of Corelli lies behind Bonporti's idiom in these trio sonatas, but his creative imagination ranged far and wide, not indebted to any local or popular idiom but always sympathetically conceived for his instruments, and for the violin in particular. The slow movements are more developed than most contemporary Italian comparisons; at all points Bonporti's imaginative harmony and lively part-writing can be enjoyed by any listener who is keen to look beyond the tried and tested trio sonata repertoire. Founded in 2006, Associazione Labirinti Armonici is an early-music ensemble of flexible formation, led by scholarship and close study of manuscripts and critical editions in it's revival of repertoire from the Baroque. Like Bonporti, the ensemble is based in the Trento region of Italy, making festival appearances and giving masterclasses in early music.

By Bach's time, the traditional forms of church service had been fundamentally altered by the Reformation, and in German churches Latin had yielded to the country's own language. To an extent, however, the Latin mass text did remain in use in Protestant church music - in particular the Kyrie and Gloria sections. Albeit incomplete, this form of mass setting was termed 'Missa'; nowadays the pieces are often referred to as 'Lutheran Masses'. Bach's famous Mass in B minor, later expanded into a complete mass, began it's existence as a work of this kind, and four other examples from Bach's pen have survived. The recent release of the Missae in G minor and G major (BWV 235 and 236) caused the reviewers in Gramophone and Fono Forum to eagerly look forward to the sequel, and Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki have not kept them waiting. Like their companion works, the two Lutheran Masses recorded here make extensive use of earlier compositions by Bach and include reworkings of arias and choruses from cantatas, but each of the four masses also has it's own unmistakable artistic profile. The most telling detail on the present disc is the instrumentation, where Bach's choice of flutes in BWV 234 and of horns and oboes in BWV 233 contributes to the individual character of each work. In his task of supplying the music for church services Bach also performed music by other composers, among them Marco Gioseppe Peranda whose Kyrie-Gloria mass closes the disc. Born in 1625, Peranda trained in Rome, and was active in the Dresden Hofkapelle from the 1650s until his death in 1675. Copies in Bach's hand of parts of Peranda's splendidly contrapuntal Missa in A minor exist, and it is likely that Bach performed the work during the latter part of his Leipzig period.
