【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Metaphysical Exile On J.M. Coetzee's Jesus Fictions【電子書籍】[ Robert Pippin ]

Nobel Prize-winning novelist J.M. Coetzee's "Jesus" fictions constitute a trilogy of novels that have appeared over the last decade. They stand out from his earlier work in their difficulty, and in the central role they accord philosophy--in part through their interest in specific themes in which philosophy is interested, in part through their critical engagement with philosophy as a mode of intellectual activity, with a very particular role to play in the broader cultural concerns of modern Western Europe. Robert Pippin presents the first detailed interpretation of J.M. Coetzee's "Jesus" trilogy as a whole. In order to understand them, he treats the three fictions as a philosophical fable, in the tradition of Plato's Republic, More's Utopia, Rousseau's Emile, or Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In the trilogy's mythical setting, everyone is an exile, removed from their homeland and transported to a strange new place, with most of their memories of their homeland erased. Pippin treats these fictions as philosophical explorations of the implications of a deeper kind of spiritual homelessness--a version that characterizes late modern life itself--and he sees the theme of forgetting as a figure for modern historical amnesia and indifference to reflection and self-knowledge. This state of exile is interpreted as metaphysical as well as geographical. Pippin's insightful, careful reading of Coetzee suggests the limitations of traditional philosophical treatments of themes like eros, beauty, social order, art, family, non-discursive forms of intelligibility, self-deception, and death. And he wrings from the trilogy its intertextuality, and many references to the Christian Bible, Plato, Cervantes, Goethe, Kleist, and Wittgenstein, among others. Throughout, Pippin expresses the potential of literature to be a profound form of philosophical reflection.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

FIRST DAWN OF ASH - EXILE IS BOOK 2 OF THE FIRST DAWN OF ASH TRILOGY

The world didn't end quietly it sank screaming beneath the waves. When the ocean swallowed South Florida, nuclear reactor tech Joe Alvarez thought the bunker at Turkey point would be his grave. Instead, a battered military fleet, pulled him, his family, and a handful of survivors out of the dark...

And into something even more dangerous. Now the fleet drifts across an endless ocean that used to be the world. Everything is at least 500 feet underwater. Cities. Shores. Escape routes. Hope.

Food is running out. Fuel is nearly gone. Storms hit hard enough to tear steel. And something new is moving in the depths - something no one can identify, but everyone fears. Every mission into a drowned city could be their last. Every wreck might hold a miracle. Or a grave. Every shadow on the water could hide the enemy who wants the fleet wiped out for good . Joe isn't a soldier. He isn't a hero. But he's the one who refuses to let humanity sink with the ruins. As threats closed in from above and below, as loyalties fracture, and, as the truth about the world's collapse begins to surface, Joe must decide how far he's willing to go - and who he's willing to become - to lead the survivors to the one thing the ocean hasn't taken. 【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Exile to the Stars【電子書籍】[ Dale B Mattheis ]

In the year 2025, either you have connections on the inside or you are out. On a cold rainy night in Seattle, Washington, Jeff Friedrick is on his way out. Abandoned by his girlfriend, forced into a duel then later attacked by a gang on his way home and nearly killed, he’s certain things couldn’t get worse. Yet several weeks later he also loses his job as an anthropologist. Socially isolated, unable to leave his apartment, Jeff feels his life is over. Needing to get away he decides to go on a long hike.

Renewed peace returns as Jeff wanders the forests of the Sawtooth Mountain Range. However, the weather goes sour and it begins to snow, all the birds disappear, and the wind drops off to nothing. A terrible sense of looming disaster overwhelms Jeff, but where is the threat? At that moment a gigantic earthquake strikes and he is hurled down slope and knocked unconscious.

Jeff awakens in the middle of a howling blizzard covered with several feet of snow. Digging a snow cave he passes out. Come morning, he can only stare around in unbelieving shock. The Cascade Mountains are big, but nothing compared to the enormous peaks that surround him. And where did all the snow come from? Putting questions aside he hurries to hike out before what remains of his food runs out.

Days later there is still no sign of civilization, but Jeff is convinced he will find a highway. Then, one beautiful evening he trudges up a hill to view what promises to be a great moonrise and watches in unbelieving consternation bordering on terror as two moons sail above the horizon. He stumbles back to camp in a state of profound shock. Every rationalization stripped away, he now understands there will be no highway. He is no longer on Earth. So begins the real story of Jeff Friedrick.

Weeks pass and he slowly accepts that he will never see family or friends again. Jeff also learns to trust nothing, for some of the creatures have unexpected and nasty habits. Then there are the predators following him just out of sight. One night, sitting around a campfire, he meets them.

EXILE TO THE STARS is the story of a man pushed so far beyond previous ability that he balances at the edge of death day to day. Yet he survives, gains in strength, and eventually is taken in by a race of giant Northmen. There he finds a mentor and gleans a few hints regarding the questions that never leave his mind: Who or what transported him to Aketti? Why was he dumped into a snow bank and left to die? And who are the invaders marching north to destroy his new-found people? Finding a horse that likely isn’t one, Jeff heads south in search of answers.

New threats face Jeff and Cynic as they cross hundreds of miles of prairie to fabled Khorgan, home to every form of treachery and deceit practiced by man. Meeting traders as worried as he is about what is marching north, they sail south to the jungles of Arzak where their worst suspicions are confirmedーthe Salcheks of myth have returned in force. There is no option but to run. Retreating north, Jeff rallies the Northmen and opposing forces meet on the plains of Arvalia as winter descends with relentless snow and cold. It is a battle that is likely to leave no one standing, friend or foe. Pushed beyond his limits for the last time, Jeff staggers toward physical and emotional ruin. Yet he is sustained by a depth of love never encountered on Earth, from a woman who cannot be human.

And so this first volume of THE ALARAI CHRONICLES ends with victory, but also with the knowledge that the battle has just begun and is destined to span two worlds, Aketti and Earth. The Gods say so. But where is Earth? Are they even in the same galaxy? How are they supposed to cross such a distance?

Each of the seven novels in this series is an adventure in its own right and adds pieces to a puzzle that only seems to get bigger and more complex. The challenges and adventures never end and expand to a dimension not dreamed of or imagined possible.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Man Who Had Been King The American Exile of Napoleon's Brother Joseph【電子書籍】[ Patricia Tyson Stroud ]

Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples and Spain, claimed that he had never wanted the overpowering roles thrust upon him by his illustrious younger brother Napoleon. Left to his own devices, he would probably have been a lawyer in his native Corsica, a country gentleman with leisure to read the great literature he treasured and oversee the maintenance of his property. When Napoleon's downfall forced Joseph into exile, he was able to become that country gentleman at last, but in a place he could scarcely have imagined.

It comes as a surprise to most people that Joseph spent seventeen years in the United States following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. In The Man Who Had Been King, Patricia Tyson Stroud has written a rich accountーdrawing on unpublished Bonaparte family lettersーof this American exile, much of it passed in regal splendor high above the banks of the Delaware River in New Jersey.

Upon his escape from France in 1815, Joseph arrived in the new land with a fortune in hand and shortly embarked upon building and fitting out the magnificent New Jersey estate he called Point Breeze. The palatial house was filled with paintings and sculpture by such luminaries as David, Canova, Rubens, and Titian. The surrounding park extended to 1,800 acres of luxuriously landscaped gardens, with twelve miles of carriage roads, an artificial lake, and a network of subterranean tunnels that aroused much local speculation.

Stroud recounts how Joseph became friend and host to many of the nation's wealthiest and most cultivated citizens, and how his art collection played a crucial role in transmitting high European taste to America. He never ceased longing for his homeland, however. Despite his republican airs, he never stopped styling himself as "the Count de Survilliers," a noble title he fabricated on his first flight from France in 1814, when Napoleon was exiled to Elba, nor did he ever learn more than rudimentary English. Although he would repeatedly plead with his wife to join him, he was not a faithful husband, and Stroud narrates his affairs with an American and a Frenchwoman, both of whom bore him children. Yet he continued to feel the separation from his two legitimate daughters keenly and never stopped plotting to ensure the dynastic survival of the Bonapartes.

In the end, the man who had been king returned to Europe, where he was eventually interred next to the tomb of his brother in Les Invalides. But the legacy of Joseph Bonaparte in America remains, and it is this that Patricia Tyson Stroud has masterfully uncovered in a book that is sure to appeal to lovers of art and gardens and European and American history.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Farewell Shiraz An Iranian Memoir of Revolution and Exile【電子書籍】[ Cyrus Kadivar ]

A poignant memoir of pre-1979 Iran and the human drama behind the fall of the last shah

In October 1999 during a trip to Cairo, Cyrus Kadivar, an exiled Iranian living in London, visited the tomb of the last shah and opened a Pandora’s box. Haunted by nostalgia for a bygone era, he recalled a protected and idyllic childhood in the fabled city of Shiraz and his coming of age during the 1979 Iranian revolution. Back in London, he reflected on what had happened to him and his family after their uprooting and decided to conduct his own investigation into why he lost his country. He spent the next ten years seeking out witnesses who would shed light on the last days of Pahlavi rule. Among those he met were a former empress, ex-courtiers, disaffected revolutionaries, and the bereaved relatives of those who perished in the cataclysm.

In Farewell Shiraz, Kadivar tells the story of his family and childhood against the tumultuous backdrop of twentieth-century Iran, from the 1905?1907 Constitutional Revolution to the fall of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, before presenting accounts of his meetings with key witnesses to the Shah’s fall and the rise of Khomeini. Each of the people interviewed provides a richly detailed picture of the momentous events that took place and the human drama behind them.

Combining exquisite vignettes with rare testimonials and first-hand interviews, Farewell Shiraz draws us into a sweeping yet often intimate account of a vanished world and offers a compelling investigation into a political earthquake whose reverberations still live with us today.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Between Two Millstones, Book 1 Sketches of Exile, 1974?1978【電子書籍】[ Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn ]

Russian Nobel prize?winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918?2008) is widely acknowledged as one of the most important figuresーand perhaps the most important writerーof the last century. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the first English translation of his memoir of the West, Between Two Millstones, Book 1, is being published. Fast-paced, absorbing, and as compelling as the earlier installments of his memoir The Oak and the Calf (1975), Between Two Millstones begins on February 13, 1974, when Solzhenitsyn found himself forcibly expelled to Frankfurt, West Germany, as a result of the publication in the West of The Gulag Archipelago. Solzhenitsyn moved to Zurich, Switzerland, for a time and was considered the most famous man in the world, hounded by journalists and reporters. During this period, he found himself untethered and unable to work while he tried to acclimate to his new surroundings.

Between Two Millstones contains vivid descriptions of Solzhenitsyn's journeys to various European countries and North American locales, where he and his wife Natalia (“Alya”) searched for a location to settle their young family. There are fascinating descriptions of one-on-one meetings with prominent individuals, detailed accounts of public speeches such as the 1978 Harvard University commencement, comments on his television appearances, accounts of his struggles with unscrupulous publishers and agents who mishandled the Western editions of his books, and the KGB disinformation efforts to besmirch his name. There are also passages on Solzhenitsyn's family and their property in Cavendish, Vermont, whose forested hillsides and harsh winters evoked his Russian homeland, and where he could finally work undisturbed on his ten-volume dramatized history of the Russian Revolution, The Red Wheel. Stories include the efforts made to assure a proper education for the writer's three sons, their desire to return one day to their home in Russia, and descriptions of his extraordinary wife, editor, literary advisor, and director of the Russian Social Fund, Alya, who successfully arranged, at great peril to herself and to her family, to smuggle Solzhenitsyn's invaluable archive out of the Soviet Union.

Between Two Millstones is a literary event of the first magnitude. The book dramatically reflects the pain of Solzhenitsyn's separation from his Russian homeland and the chasm of miscomprehension between him and Western society.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Carrying the Banner of Freedom Poland's Government-in-Exile, 1939-1991【電子書籍】[ David Grus ]

A fascinating exploration of a little-known subject--the government-in-exile of Poland which existed in London for over 50 years.

In the wake of the German and Soviet invasions in September 1939, the Republic of Poland’s government re-established itself abroad, first in France, then in the United Kingdom, where it functioned until the fall of communism in Poland. It never surrendered to the Germans, nor did it accept the communist government imposed by the Soviet Union. Despite diplomatic and financial pressures, the exiles maintained a government consisting of a president, prime minister, council of ministers, national council, judiciary, and treasury, and they regularly conducted elections. Throughout its existence it remained a constant reminder of Poland’s plight during and after the war.

This book provides an English language history of Poland’s Government-in-Exile from its creation in 1939 through the dissolution of the last of its bodies in 1991, focusing on its relations with wartime allies, its loss of recognition in 1945, its postwar mission, relevance, and international reach, and its legacy in post-communist Poland. It explores internal conflicts and divisions in the exile community, the Government-in-Exile’s advocacy for Poland throughout the Cold War, and its extensive support for the opposition in Poland.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Where the Angels Lived One Family's Story of Exile, Loss, and Return【電子書籍】[ Margaret McMullan ]

The moment she discovers the existence of Richard, a long-lost relative, at Israel’s Holocaust Museum, Margaret McMullan begins an unexpected journey of revelation and connectivity as she tirelessly researches the history of her ancestors, the Engel de J?nosis. Propelled by a Fulbright cultural exchange that sends her to teach at a Hungarian University, Margaret, her husband and teenage son all eagerly travel to P?cs, the land of her mother’s Jewish lineage. After reaching P?cs, a Hungarian town both small and primarily Christian, Margaret realizes right then and there how difficult her mission is going to be. Heart-wrenching, passionate and insightful, Where the Angels Lived by Margaret McMullan beautifully documents the relentless determination of a woman picking up the pieces of her family’s fragmented history throughout the Hungarian Holocaust.

“The destruction of the Jews in the country districts of Hungary was a simple business. The Germans made good use of their experience gained annihilating between three to four million Polish, German and Austrian Jews.”

In Where the Angels Lived, Margaret quickly discovers just how distinguished and influential her relatives appear to have been before the Holocaust. However, no one seems to recall the man whose name she saw that day in Israel: Richard Engel de J?nosi. With the help of students, strangers, and long-lost relatives, Margaret slowly pieces together bits of information about Richard’s past she never would have found without venturing to her family’s homeland.

While Margaret’s research starts to reap its own rewards, the road to discovery still comes at a price. Back in the United States, Margaret’s father is sick and her mother is looking frailer every time they Skype. Despite her parents’ deteriorating health, there is much more work to be done abroad.

“Remembering the dead, especially family members is important. I know this.”

As Margaret struggles to discover why Richard’s existence is wiped from P?cs history, her journey soon becomes her mother’s journey, a nation’s journey, and even perhaps, all of our journeys to reconnect with an inexplicable past.

“Sitting there in the pew carved of Moravian oak, I start to shake. I curse every last Hungarian who deported or murdered my family. See? Look at me. My mother got out and she had me and I had a son. You didn’t end us.”

Historical, authentic and family-oriented, Where the Angels Lived tells the tale of a somewhat parallel universe that exists even in the 21st centuryーdealings with Soviet-style bureaucracy; skepticism; anti-Semitism; and ironically the same sort of isolation and rejection Margaret’s Jewish Hungarian family experienced in 1944 before they were forced into concentration camps. Straddling memoir and reportage, past and present, this story reminds us all that we can escape a country, but we can never escape history.

Book Iii the Long Road Home【電子書籍】[ Astrida Barbins-Stahnke ]

At the end of Book I How Long is Exile? The Song and Dance Festival of Free Latvians widowed Milda Arajs had taken a new direction in her life. She had decided to break solidarity with her mainstream ethnic community and make good her promise to her daughter Ilga that they would make a "pilgrimage" to Soviet Latvia at Christmas time (1983) and welcome the baby Krijanis, born to American Mara and Latvian Igors, as the symbol of a new era. Also, Milda had chosen to give herself to Peteris Vanags, the one-armed veteran she encountered in the Esslingen DP camp after the war. (Story in Book IIOut of the Ruins of Germany.) They married shortly before the momentous trip, and soon thereafter Milda joined him in Washington, D.C. For a decade they lived happily, making up for lost years of forbidden longing and desireuntil the Soviet Union fell, and the Kingdom of Exile felt the shocks and afershocks.

Unbeknown to herself, Milda's Christmas trip behind the Iron Curtain, with all its revalations, was her first step on her Long Road Home. Also, that trip at the height of American women's liberation movement, marked her adult coming of age and becoming the ruler of her life. Released from domestic bonds, she struck out on her own and challenged her mind to higher things. When Peter, in the late 1980s, was asked to join Radio Free Europe in Munich, Milda saw her Road clearly winding its way back to Latvia. This, naturally threatened the marriage. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the Road become bumpy, even trecherous. Afraid and out of step, Peter seemed to lag behind, while Milda hurried forward now that the iron curtain was swept away. With firm steps she returned to her homeland; she reunited with her sister Zelda and reclaimed their parents' apartment. Peter complied and came up with the money, but, as if lost, he often went off by himself, afraid of being watched and pursued until he could not walk anymore. After his death and after the guarded secrets were revealed, Milda took her last steps on The Long Road Home alone.

Exile was over, but the sense of exile was imbedded in Milda's mind forever, and it was heavy. She felt the weight most poignantly as she watched fireworks grace the skies at elaborate festivals, where strangers celebrated, frolicking and singing to her unknown songs, and young people rush about in search for passages to new lands, where the grass seemed greener and fame and fortune beckened from clouds with silver linings.

As a participant in that, so called exile state, I began writing my version of the experience after the Milwaukee festival, filtering it through the consciousness of my main character Milda Berzi?a-Arajs, who, coming out of mourning for her husband Karlis Arajs, arrives at the festival, ready to turn a new leaf in her life. During the four days with like-minded people, interesting events, and common recollections of her childhood, the war and post-war experiences in a displaced persons' camp flash before her in a swirling kaleidescope and, at the end, throws her in the direction she did not plan to go.

Book II captures the mood after the fall of the USSR. The ethnic communitiesthe Kingdom of Exileis shaken, and the people awake as if from a deep sleep. Milda suddenly becomes active; she makes crucial decisions and switches from an outdated romantic into a realist as she returns home, meets her estranged sister and the country she had left behind. As she tries to find her place in it, she understands that exile is a state of mind; it is a state where half the world's population liveslike sheuprooted by tyranny and wars. Yet she and other displaced persons go on living and finding pleasure in art, poetry, song, and in each otherthough with a sad, melancholy smile.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Justice Dilemma Leaders and Exile in an Era of Accountability【電子書籍】[ Daniel Krcmaric ]

Abusive leaders are now held accountable for their crimes in a way that was unimaginable just a few decades ago. What are the consequences of this recent push for international justice? In The Justice Dilemma, Daniel Krcmaric explains why the "golden parachute" of exile is no longer an attractive retirement option for oppressive rulers. He argues that this is both a blessing and a curse: leaders culpable for atrocity crimes fight longer civil wars because they lack good exit options, but the threat of international prosecution deters some leaders from committing atrocities in the first place. The Justice Dilemma therefore diagnoses an inherent tension between conflict resolution and atrocity prevention, two of the signature goals of the international community.

Krcmaric also sheds light on several important puzzles in world politics. Why do some rulers choose to fight until they are killed or captured? Why not simply save oneself by going into exile? Why do some civil conflicts last so much longer than others? Why has state-sponsored violence against civilians fallen in recent years?

While exploring these questions, Krcmaric marshals statistical evidence on patterns of exile, civil war duration, and mass atrocity onset. He also reconstructs the decision-making processes of embattled leadersーincluding Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, Charles Taylor of Liberia, and Blaise Compaor? of Burkina Fasoーto show how contemporary international justice both deters atrocities and prolongs conflicts.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

From Amman to Beirut and Damascus, Deborah Amos follows the impact of one of the great migrations of modern times. The history of the Middle East tells us that one of the greatest problems of the last forty years has been that of a displaced population, angered by their inability to safely return home and resume ownership of their property--as they see it. Now, the pattern has been repeated. A new population of exiles, as large as the Palestinians, has been created. This particular displacement stirs up the historic conflict between Sunni and Shia. More significant even than the creation of colonial nation states a century ago, the alienation of the Sunni middle class has the capacity to cause resounding resentments across the region for generations to come.

From the ashes of war-torn Aleppo to the vibrant chaos of Istanbul, Darina Maalouf, a Syrian refugee, clings to the ancient art of shadow puppetry as her only solace. Haunted by loss, she finds refuge in a forgotten storefront, transforming it into the G?lge Evi, the Shadow House, where flickering candlelight illuminates not just her translucent puppets but also the depths of her resilience. But in a city teeming with a thousand stories, hers struggles to be heard.

Then, drawn by the ethereal music and the mesmerizing play of light and shadow, a shy Turkish boy named Levent Demirkan hesitates at the entrance to the G?lge Evi. His stutter binds him, yet the magic of the puppets beckons him closer. Levent carries his own legacy of loss ? the forgotten art of his renowned puppeteer grandfather. In Darina, he finds a kindred spirit, and in their shared passion, a bridge across cultures.

Together, they weave a tapestry of stories, blending Syrian folklore with the ancient wit of Karag?z and Hacivat, the beloved characters of Turkish shadow puppetry. Their performances become a vibrant hub of cultural exchange, captivating locals, tourists, and fellow refugees alike. As their fame grows, so does the attention of Murat Y?lmaz, a charismatic politician with a dangerous agenda. He sees in Darina’s art a tool for his own ambition, promising protection while subtly twisting her narratives to serve his purpose.

Caught in a web of political intrigue, Darina and Levent must choose between compromise and defiance. Their art, once a refuge, becomes a battlefield where shadows dance with dissent, challenging the very powers that threaten to silence them. In a climactic performance, they unveil a powerful allegory of displacement and resilience, igniting a spark of resistance that echoes far beyond the confines of their small theatre.

From the bustling marketplaces to the shadowy corridors of power, *The Shadow Puppets of Istanbul* is a story of exile and belonging, of loss and hope, and the enduring power of art to transcend borders and ignite the human spirit.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
