Last Boat Out of Shanghai The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao's Revolution【電子書籍】[ Helen Zia ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Last Boat Out of Shanghai The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao's Revolution【電子書籍】[ Helen Zia ]

The dramatic real life stories of four young people caught up in the mass exodus of Shanghai in the wake of China’s 1949 Communist revolutionーa heartrending precursor to the struggles faced by emigrants today.

“A true page-turner . . . [Helen] Zia has proven once again that history is something that happens to real people.”ーNew York Times bestselling author Lisa See

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR ? FINALIST FOR THE PEN/JACQUELINE BOGRAD WELD AWARD FOR BIOGRAPHY

Shanghai has historically been China’s jewel, its richest, most modern and westernized city. The bustling metropolis was home to sophisticated intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and a thriving middle class when Mao’s proletarian revolution emerged victorious from the long civil war. Terrified of the horrors the Communists would wreak upon their lives, citizens of Shanghai who could afford to fled in every direction. Seventy years later, members of the last generation to fully recall this massive exodus have revealed their stories to Chinese American journalist Helen Zia, who interviewed hundreds of exiles about their journey through one of the most tumultuous events of the twentieth century. From these moving accounts, Zia weaves together the stories of four young Shanghai residents who wrestled with the decision to abandon everything for an uncertain life as refugees in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States.

Benny, who as a teenager became the unwilling heir to his father’s dark wartime legacy, must decide either to escape to Hong Kong or navigate the intricacies of a newly Communist China. The resolute Annuo, forced to flee her home with her father, a defeated Nationalist official, becomes an unwelcome exile in Taiwan. The financially strapped Ho fights deportation from the U.S. in order to continue his studies while his family struggles at home. And Bing, given away by her poor parents, faces the prospect of a new life among strangers in America. The lives of these men and women are marvelously portrayed, revealing the dignity and triumph of personal survival.

Herself the daughter of immigrants from China, Zia is uniquely equipped to explain how crises like the Shanghai transition affect children and their families, students and their futures, and, ultimately, the way we see ourselves and those around us. Last Boat Out of Shanghai brings a poignant personal angle to the experiences of refugees then and, by extension, today.

“Zia’s portraits are compassionate and heartbreaking, and they are, ultimately, the universal story of many families who leave their homeland as refugees and find less-than-welcoming circumstances on the other side.”ーAmy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club

The Strangers We Became Lessons in Exile from One of Iraq's Last Jews【電子書籍】[ Cynthia Kaplan Shamash ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Strangers We Became Lessons in Exile from One of Iraq's Last Jews【電子書籍】[ Cynthia Kaplan Shamash ]

This riveting and utterly unique memoir chronicles the coming of age of Cynthia Shamash, an Iraqi Jew born in Baghdad in 1963. When she was eight, her family tried to escape Iraq over the Iranian border, but they were captured and jailed for five weeks. Upon release, they were returned to their home in Baghdad, where most of their belongings had been confiscated and the door of their home sealed with wax. They moved in with friends and applied for passports to spend a ten-day vacation in Istanbul, although they never intended to return. From Turkey, the family fled to Tel Aviv and then to Amsterdam, where Cynthia’s father soon died of a heart attack. At the age of twelve, Sanuti (as her mother called her) was sent to London for schooling, where she lived in an Orthodox Jewish enclave with the chief rabbi and his family. At the end of the school year, she returned to Holland to navigate her teen years in a culture that was much more sexually liberal than the one she had been born into, or indeed the one she was experiencing among Orthodox Jews in London. Shortly after finishing her schooling as a dentist, Cynthia moved to the United States in an attempt to start over. This vivid, beautiful, and very funny memoir will appeal to readers intrigued by spirituality, tolerance, the personal ramifications of statelessness and exile, the clashes of cultures, and the future of Iraq and its Jews.

Terrible Exile The Last Days of Napoleon on St Helena【電子書籍】[ Brian Unwin ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Terrible Exile The Last Days of Napoleon on St Helena【電子書籍】[ Brian Unwin ]

At its height, the Napoleonic Empire spanned much of mainland Europe. F?ted and feared by millions of citizens, Napoleon was the most powerful and famous man of his age. But following his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo the future of the one-time Emperor of France seemed irredeemably bleak. How did the brilliant tactician cope with being at the mercy of his captors? How did he react to a life in exile on St Helena ? and how did the other inhabitants of that isolated and impregnable island respond to his presence there? And what tactics did he develop to preserve his legacy in such drastically reduced circumstances?

Tracing events from the dramatic defeat at Waterloo to his death six years later, this is the first modern comprehensive account of the last phase of Napoleon's life. Drawing on many previously overlooked journals and letters, Brian Unwin has pieced together a remarkably vivid account of Napoleon's final years which also offers fresh insights into the character of this giant of European history.

Through his initial flight from the battlefield and his journey into exile on St Helena, Napoleon refused to accept that he would not be allowed to return to somewhere in Europe or even America. He railed against every aspect of his imprisonment and conspired to make life as difficult as possible for his unfortunate jailer, Hudson Lowe, whose impossible situation is sympathetically described here. Confined with him in the damp and confined Longwood House, life was also uncomfortable for those loyal companions who chose to journey with him into exile. Unsurprisingly for such a man of action, Napoleon bitterly resented being under constant supervision when he ventured outside his house and suffered acutely from boredom as much as from his physical ailments. Contrary to the strict wishes of the English he refused to accept any diminution in his status: 'Je ne suis pas le G?n?ral Bonaparte, je suis L'Empereur Napol?on.' But gradually Napoleon came to think less about escape and more about how he would be remembered by future generations, spending hour after hour dictating the story of his campaigns to Count Las Cases, the companion who had travelled with him chiefly to act as his amanuensis.

Terrible Exile brilliantly evokes the claustrophobic atmosphere of life on St Helena, offering a colourful and original history of the period as well as a persuasive psychological portrait of a great man in reduced circumstances. It will be essential reading for anyone with an interest in Napoleonic history and is an important addition to our understanding of the subject.

The Last Colony A Tale of Exile, Justice, and Courage【電子書籍】[ Philippe Sands ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Last Colony A Tale of Exile, Justice, and Courage【電子書籍】[ Philippe Sands ]

The moving, inspiring David-and-Goliath true story of freedom and justice involving one tiny nation in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, and the extraordinary woman, a descendant of slaves, who dared to take on the Crown and the United Kingdomーand win a historic victory

In 1973, on the Chagos Islands off the coast of Africa, Liseby Elyseーtwenty years old, newly married and four months pregnantーwas, rounded up, along with the entire population of Chagos, and ordered to pack her belongings and leave her beloved homeland by ship or slowly starve; the British had cut off all food supplies.
Some two thousand people who had lived on the islands of Chagos for generations, many the direct descendants of enslaved people brought there from Mozambique and Madagascar in the 18th century by the French and British, were deported overnight from their island paradise as the result of a secret decision by the British government to provide the United States with land to construct a military base in the Indian Ocean.
For four decades the government of Mauritius fought for the return of Chagos. Three decades into the battle, Philippe Sands became the lead lawyer in the case, designing its legal strategy and assembling a team of lawyers from Mauritius, Belgium, India, Ukraine, and the U.S.
When the case finally reached the World Court in the Hague, Sands chose as the star witness the diminutive Liseby Elyse, now sixty-five years old, and instructed her to appear before the court, speaking in Kreol, to tell the fourteen international judges her story of forced exile. The fate of Chagos rested on her testimony.
The judges faced a landmark decision: Would they rule that Britain illegally detached Chagos from Mauritius? Would Liseby Elyse sway the judges and open the door, allowing her and her fellow Chagossians to return homeーor would they remain exiled forever?
Philippe Sands writes of his own journey into international law and that of the World Court in the Hague, and of the extraordinary decades-long quest of Liseby Elyse, and the people of Chagos, in their fight for justice and a free and fair return to the idyllic land of their birth.

The Last Krishna: A God in Exile【電子書籍】[ Parthasarathy.V ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Last Krishna: A God in Exile【電子書籍】[ Parthasarathy.V ]

What if the most famous god in human history returned not in divine glory, but as a struggling YouTube creator with one working eye and unpaid rent?

Arjun carries the name of Krishna's greatest disciple while harboring the consciousness of Krishna himselfーa cosmic joke he won't understand for decades. From age three, when neighbors find him eating sacred mud and whispering ancient truths, to forty-seven, when he finally accepts his identity as the Last Krishna, this is the story of divinity learning to live in exile from itself.

His childhood is marked by impossible knowledge and inexplicable accidents. He speaks of past lives before learning language, suffers twenty-six major injuries that somehow heal others nearby, and carries the weight of cosmic memory in a small human body that breaks with disturbing regularity.

His awakening comes in stages. Kundalini activation at twenty-seven floods his nervous system with divine energy. A past-life regression at the same age reveals his true nature as the cosmic consciousness that once guided Arjuna through history's most important spiritual conversation. But knowing who you are and learning to live it are separated by decades of very human struggle.

His relationships echo mythological patterns with heartbreaking accuracy. Eight women recognize his divine nature across his lifetimeーan actress, a yogini, a police inspector, a techie, a journalist, a mother, a housewife, and a free-spirited developer. Each loves him completely and leaves inevitably, unable to build ordinary lives with someone carrying extraordinary purpose. His greatest love affair happens entirely onlineーa digital Radha from Delhi who recognizes his soul through YouTube videos but cannot bridge the gap between cosmic connection and human commitment.

His service comes at profound personal cost. He can predict cyclones, election results, and film failures with startling accuracy, but earns only $50 monthly from his spiritual teaching. He heals strangers' depression, manifests others' career breakthroughs, and answers prayers through casual conversationーwhile living in poverty and chronic pain. He is the rainmaker who experiences drought, the healer who remains wounded, the miracle-worker forgotten by those he serves.

His ultimate teaching transcends traditional spirituality. This isn't about escaping human experience to touch divinityーit's about discovering that human experience IS divine experience, viewed from inside the process. Through failed startups and successful prophecies, through divine recognition and mortal loneliness, through remembering cosmic identity while paying electricity bills, Arjun becomes living proof that awakening doesn't require perfect circumstancesーit requires perfect presence with imperfect circumstances.

"The Last Krishna" is mythological fiction for the modern ageーa story that finds the sacred in the ordinary, the eternal in the temporary, and the divine in the beautifully, necessarily, completely human. It's Siddhartha meets The Alchemist meets Bruce Almighty, written for anyone who has ever suspected they might be more than they appear while feeling less than they hoped.

This is what mythology looks like when it grows up and gets a day jobーprofound, funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately transformative.

Exile At Last Selected Poems【電子書籍】[ Chava Rosenfarb ]

When Chava Rosenfarb arrived in Montreal in February 1950, she was already a published poet with one acclaimed volume, Di balade fun nekhtikn vald (The Ballad of Yesterday? Forest) to her credit. She was also a Holocaust survivor who, after being liberated from Bergen Belsen in 1945 had crossed the border illegally into Belgium, where she lived with her mother, sister and husband, all Holocaust survivors. In 1950 Rosenfarb? Montreal publisher, Harry Hershman, who had just published a Canadian edition of Di balade fun nekhtikn vald sponsored the entire group to come to Canada. Rosenfarb and her family settled in Montreal. Almost all of the poems in this collection were originally published in Yiddish. Chava Rosenfarb herself translated most of them into English. The poems have been arranged so that they follow roughly the chronology of Rosenfarb? life, beginning with the poems she wrote in the Lodz ghetto as a young girl and moving to the more mature poems of her years in Canada.

Sigmaringen still fascinates long after its collapse at the end of the Second World War. This enclave of French Vichy officials and fascists on German soil ? refugees and hostages maintained at the Nazis’ pleasure ? played out the last residue of French collaborationism in the closing months of the war, presided over by the inert figurehead of Marshal P?tain, against the fairytale backdrop of Sigmaringen Castle. No single English-language history of the Sigmaringen enclave exists, yet it brought together some of the most colourful and controversial collaborationists, from the militant French SS officer Joseph Darnand to the delirious writer Louis-Ferdinand C?line, in a petri dish for the last samples of the collaborationism that had infected France and laid her low.

Vichy’s Last Castle brings together contemporary documents, eye-witness reports, diplomatic communiques and protests, and personal chronicles, alongside post-war analyses, war crimes trials, apologetics and memoirs, to provide a complete picture of the Sigmaringen enclave, from daily life to political chicanery. From the vain, formal protests of Marshal P?tain to the hallucinatory stream-of-consciousness of C?line, the book draws on contemporary photographs as well as texts to encapsulate this bizarre milieu, where the rank-and-file starved and suffered, while the elite played and plotted their tragicomic endgame, in a sublimely appropriate Wagnerian setting.

Fractured Tales of the Canadian Post-Apocalypse; The Exile Book of Anthology Series, Number Nine【

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Fractured Tales of the Canadian Post-Apocalypse; The Exile Book of Anthology Series, Number Nine【電子書籍】

We like to imagine the end. How we might survive. How we might live after the fateful moment that changes everything. That moment has arrivedーwelcome to Canada, after the apocalypse! Fractured is a collection of stories by more than 20 writers who imagine life after the end of days. The waters have risen around Vancouver, nuclear disasters have devastated the Prairies, a strange sickness has relocated the capital of the nation to Yellowknife, aliens have invaded Manitoba, and even ghosts have returned to exterminate the living. Across this vast nation, a country fractured and rent asunder by disasters both natural and unnatural, come the stories of survivors, of the brave and the wicked, the kind and the hostile. These are tales that reveal the secrets at this critical point for humanity, exploring a diversity of scenarios and settings from small rural communities to large cities and protagonists from all walks of life. Postapocalyptic literature finds its stories in each generation that has something new to reflect upon: Mary Shelley's 1826 novel The Last Man is considered the first work of modern apocalyptic fiction, and many have followed in her footsteps in both print, with The Hunger Games, I Am Legend, The Road, and Oryx and Crake, and film, with Mad Max, Waterworld, The Book of Eli, and others. Contributors to this volume include T. S. Bazelli, David Huebert, Hilary Janzen, Arun Jiwa, Claude Lalumi?re, Michael Pack, Morgan M. Page, Miriam Oudin, Frank Westcott, A. C. Wise, and more.

"A multifaceted journey that is geographical, personal and political . . . A complex, nuanced view of United States?Latin American politics and relations of the last forty some years." ー Durham Herald-Sun

"One of the most important voices coming out of South America." ー Salman Rushdie

In September 1973, the military took power in Chile, and Ariel Dorfman, a young leftist allied with President Allende, was forced to flee for his life. In Feeding on Dreams, Dorfman portrays, through visceral scenes and with startling honesty, the personal and political maelstroms that have defined his life since the Pinochet coup. Dorfman’s wry and masterfully told account takes us on a page-turning tour of the past several decades of North-South political history and of the complex consequences of revolution and tyranny, excavating for the first time his profound and provocative journey as an exile and the consequences for his wife and family.

"Fascinating." ー San Francisco Examiner

"A great book that will simultaneously undo us and sustain us." ー Tikkun

Should ambition cease with death? Napoleon Bonaparte doesn't think so. His ghost is actually hungrier than ever.

The ex-emperor has no intention of allowing his premature end to thwart his destiny or threaten his legacy. But death has unexpected surprises for the restless spirit of the nineteenth-century's most infamous tactician.

Set in 1821 on the remote Atlantic island of St Helena during the week between Napoleon's death and burial, this historical who-done-it examines what powerful men do in narrowed circumstances and what ordinary men do when their lives collide with the exceptional. Louise Hoole draws upon the letters and memoirs of those exiled on the island to bring to life the complex machinations of those who made up Napoleon's last court.

Crossing the Borders of Time A True Story of War, Exile, and Love Reclaimed【電子書籍】[ Leslie Maitland ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Crossing the Borders of Time A True Story of War, Exile, and Love Reclaimed【電子書籍】[ Leslie Maitland ]

On a pier in Marseille in 1942, with desperate refugees pressing to board one of the last ships to escape France before the Nazis choked off its ports, an 18-year-old German Jewish girl was pried from the arms of the Catholic Frenchman she loved and promised to marry. As the Lipari carried Janine and her family to Casablanca on the first leg of a perilous journey to safety in Cuba, she would read through her tears the farewell letter that Roland had slipped in her pocket: “Whatever the length of our separation, our love will survive it, because it depends on us alone. I give you my vow that whatever the time we must wait, you will be my wife. Never forget, never doubt.”
Five years later ? her fierce desire to reunite with Roland first obstructed by war and then, in secret, by her father and brother ? Janine would build a new life in New York with a dynamic American husband. That his obsession with Ayn Rand tormented their marriage was just one of the reasons she never ceased yearning to reclaim her lost love.
Investigative reporter Leslie Maitland grew up enthralled by her mother’s accounts of forbidden romance and harrowing flight from the Nazis. Her book is both a journalist’s vivid depiction of a world at war and a daughter’s pursuit of a haunting question: what had become of the handsome Frenchman whose picture her mother continued to treasure almost fifty years after they parted? It is a tale of memory that reporting made real and a story of undying love that crosses the borders of time.

Dirty Real Exile on Hollywood and Vine with the Gin Mill Cowboys【電子書籍】[ Peter Stanfield ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Dirty Real Exile on Hollywood and Vine with the Gin Mill Cowboys【電子書籍】[ Peter Stanfield ]

The story of how the movies assumed a gritty facade in the name of authenticity, with working actors transforming into artists, poets, painters, troubadours, and filmmakersーboth on- and off-screen.

This is the tale of how Hollywood, inspired by the success of Easy Rider, sold a cycle of films as the new dirty real. Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Monte Hellman, Jack Nicholson, Kris Kristofferson, and Sam Peckinpah, among others, parlayed a nostalgia for the gutter and donned bohemian personae, pulling on soiled shirts and scuffed boots to better counter the glamour and phoniness of Tinseltown. The result was a generation of movies, including The Hired Hand, Five Easy Pieces, Two-Lane Blacktop, The Last Picture Show, and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. With great care for the historical record and displaying a refined critical acuity, Peter Stanfield captures that pivotal moment when Hollywood tried to sell a begrimed vision of itself to the world.

Where the Angels Lived One Family's Story of Exile, Loss, and Return【電子書籍】[ Margaret McMullan ]

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Where the Angels Lived One Family's Story of Exile, Loss, and Return【電子書籍】[ Margaret McMullan ]

The moment she discovers the existence of Richard, a long-lost relative, at Israel's Holocaust Museum, Margaret McMullan begins an unexpected journey of revelation and connectivity as she tirelessly researches the history of her ancestors, the Engel de J?nosis. Propelled by a Fulbright cultural exchange that sends her to teach at a Hungarian University, Margaret, her husband and teenage son all eagerly travel to P?cs, the land of her mother's Jewish lineage. After reaching P?cs, a Hungarian town both small and primarily Christian, Margaret realizes right then and there how difficult her mission is going to be. Heart-wrenching, passionate and insightful, Where the Angels Lived by Margaret McMullan beautifully documents the relentless determination of a woman picking up the pieces of her family's fragmented history throughout the Hungarian Holocaust.

"The destruction of the Jews in the country districts of Hungary was a simple business. The Germans made good use of their experience gained annihilating between three to four million Polish, German and Austrian Jews."

In Where the Angels Lived, Margaret quickly discovers just how distinguished and influential her relatives appear to have been before the Holocaust. However, no one seems to recall the man whose name she saw that day in Israel: Richard Engel de J?nosi. With the help of students, strangers, and long-lost relatives, Margaret slowly pieces together bits of information about Richard's past she never would have found without venturing to her family's homeland.

While Margaret's research starts to reap its own rewards, the road to discovery still comes at a price. Back in the United States, Margaret's father is sick and her mother is looking frailer every time they Skype. Despite her parents' deteriorating health, there is much more work to be done abroad.

"Remembering the dead, especially family members is important. I know this."

As Margaret struggles to discover why Richard's existence is wiped from P?cs history, her journey soon becomes her mother's journey, a nation's journey, and even perhaps, all of our journeys to reconnect with an inexplicable past.

"Sitting there in the pew carved of Moravian oak, I start to shake. I curse every last Hungarian who deported or murdered my family. See? Look at me. My mother got out and she had me and I had a son. You didn't end us."

Historical, authentic and family-oriented, Where the Angels Lived tells the tale of a somewhat parallel universe that exists even in the 21st century-dealings with Soviet-style bureaucracy; skepticism; anti-Semitism; and ironically the same sort of isolation and rejection Margaret's Jewish Hungarian family experienced in 1944 before they were forced into concentration camps. Straddling memoir and reportage, past and present, this story reminds us all that we can escape a country, but we can never escape history.
