Koyanagi presents a concise and practical guide to using a micromechanics approach to predict the strength and durability of unidirectionally aligned continuum carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs).

As the use of composite materials in becomes more widespread in various fields, material durability is becoming an increasingly important consideration, particularly with regard to UN Sustainable Development Goals. Using more durable composite materials would help with achieving these goals. Because the failure of composite materials proceeds via the accumulation of micro failures and micro damage, a micromechanics approach is indispensable for estimating precise durability.

In this practical guide, Koyanagi describes this approach and explains the precise durability of the composite materials with regard to the time dependence of micro failures. This book first explains the strength and durability of unidirectionally aligned continuum CFRPs. It then individually addresses fiber, resin, and the interface between the two on the basis of their micromechanics and introduces these components’ time and temperature dependences. Koyanagi uses finite element analysis and theoretical models to integrate the characteristics of the three components to explain the macro properties of the CFRPs. Various characteristics regarding strength and durability of CFRPs are also presented.

This book is a valuable resource for researchers in academia and industry who work with composite materials. It will enable them to design composite structures, ensure their durability, evaluate them, and develop more durable composite materials.

Not many people these days over the age of forty have not had to start to deal with the problem of high blood pressure. From my own circle of friends, I know two ladies who were hospitalised through it. One had a stroke and the other developed a kind of ‘temporary dementia’.

Not only that, but the age at which people, especially in the West are becoming affected is dropping. Our sedentary lifestyles ? computers and televisions ? and junk food ? high sodium intake ? are often blamed.

Blood pressure, though measured in numbers, holds the key to understanding the vitality of your heart. It's the force with which blood surges through your arteries, driving life-sustaining oxygen and nutrients to every cell. This vital sign is recorded as two numbers: systolic (when the heart beats) and diastolic (when it rests). For instance, a reading of 120/80 mm Hg signifies a healthy blood pressure.

From bestselling author Tanya Huff comes the first in a series about an unconventional family where women cultivate power, men show a little horn, and aunties are almost always a step ahead…

Growing up a Gale girl in rural Ontario meant all the freedom Alysha Gale wanted: tracing charms on her lovers, ruling the high school with her pack of cousins, dodging the aunties’ more coercive pies. But at twenty-four, Allie is brokenhearted, out of a job, and not so much nestled in the bosom of her family as suffocated. Until her wild grandmother writes to announce she’s dead and deeding Allie a junk shop in Calgary.

As soon as she steps into the Enchantment Emporium, Allie knows there’s plenty to keep even a Gale girl busy. There’s a monkey’s paw sitting in the glass case. Her grandmother did business with a supernaturally odd collection of strays. And a smoking hot man with a dodgy cover story keeps inquiring about Granーwho’s vanished without a trace. But the shadows of Calgary hide more than one kind of threat. Allie could flee back home… or discover if she can become a force to be reckoned with all by herself.

The FBI hard boy says, “I’ll have my strike team, not too far behind you.”
Jason can see the FBI hard boy being interviewed, after the strike operation. “We followed hot rod boy in, did a strike on the girl and the Mexican hard boys. What is this thing you call ‘survivors’?”
(Jason asks himself, “What am I doing here? Okay, Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel vacation.”)
Jason leads FBI Wilma out to his Willys hot rod. They get in.
Wilma asks, “If we have to run for it, will this car (read old piece of junk) do it?”
Jason sighs, “A 350 Chevy, fuel injection, big roller cam, high compression pistons, headers, major port job, watch my Willy’s fly.”
Jason drives up the road to the lake.
Wilma says, “At least your car seems to handle the road up to the lake well.
Jason laughs and says, “You aint seen nothing yet.”
As they approach the motels, Wilma uses her phone to tell the FBI hard boys, “Wilma here. I can see motel signs and we are about to do a reconnaissance.”
Jason makes the turn into the first motel parking lot. He cruises past the few parked cars, without spotting anything of interest. Jason cruises past the back units of the motel, again without spotting anything of interest. Then Jason cruises out of the first motel parking lot, again without spotting anything of interest.
Wilma says, “First motel a zero.”
Jason makes the turn into the second motel parking lot. He cruises past the few parked cars, without spotting anything of interest. Jason then cruises past the back units of the motel. Jason spots Linda’s car among several new rental cars. Jason says, “The battered old Dodge.”
Wilma phones, “Target spotted, among several new rental cars. I read Mexican cartel boys. Lights on in unit 13.”
Wilma tells Jason, “Strike force on the way.”
Jason cruises out of the second motel parking lot, in no hurry. He then drives back to the road to the highway.
Wilma tells Jason, “Game On! The Mexicans maybe gonna try to run. We have a runner!”
Jason ups the speed of his car and continues on the road back to the highway. He spots a pair of head lights back up the road to the highway. He says, “We have a car behind us. It may be cartel hard boys.”
Wilma tells Jason, “The strike force guys tell me that the car behind us is Mexican hard boys on the run.”
Jason says, “They are moving fast, but they may not be after us. I’ll see.” Jason gets to the highway, makes a turn and heads back in the direction of the FBI motel and also in the direction of home.
The car behind Jason’s car also makes a turn and follows Jason’s car.
Jason says, “At the speed that we’re moving, we are being followed. Chances are the Mexican hard boys are after us. They still have to catch us.”
Wilma relays Jason’s information to the FBI car chasing the runner.”
Wilma then tells Jason, “The Mexicans may well have something like Kalashnikov AK-74 assault rifles with incendiary rounds.”
Jason says, “Well then, I better not let them get too close.”
Jason thinks, “Okay, Chevy, time to step up. We gonna have to out run a car with maybe forced induction. You can do it, we just gotta work together. The highway is mostly flat and smooth here, I need to play the wind a bit. I need to use any advantage.”
Wilma tells the FBI chase car, “Jason seems to be maintaining distance from the following Mexican car.”
The FBI guy says, “Local boy gonna have to do it on his own. We are at full throttle and we are still dropping back from the Mexicans.”
I scan the gauges and all seems well. The temperature is within limits and the gas should last for a bit, since I started with a full tank. Maintaining speed. I fly past a tourist car, bad spot for tourist car.
Wilma’s phone beeps, “Wilma, the Mexican car is burning off the mufflers. We are now running in the oncoming lanes to avoid the debris.”
Wilma says, “Jason is apparently also picking and choosing his lanes. He is running at high speed but trying to use the least wind resistance.”

IT’S A JUNGLE . . . IN HERE!

Behind our stress, clutter, and confusion is an infinitely spacious place one might call stillness or joy. This is our natural state of being, but we usually don’t experience it, because we are caught in a web of material possessions, desires, and fears.

Our clutter often becomes another member of the family that we feed, house, and lug around. In Your Spacious Self, author and professional space clearing expert Stephanie Bennett Vogt shows us that it’s not our stuff but the holding on to it that creates a force field of stuck-ness that clouds our perceptions and paralyzes our lives.

Clutter is not just the junk spilling out of the closet. It is anything or thought that prevents us from experiencing who we truly are. With daily tips, meditations, and a decluttering checklist, Your Spacious Self will show you how to:
CLEAR THE CLUTTER in your home and in your lifeREVEL IN YOUR OWN SPACIOUSNESS, a place of stillness and joyLET GO OF THE PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS that no longer serve the joyous being that you are

Radical in its message and elegant in its simplicity, Your Spacious Self offers a new model that combines the ancient wisdom of space clearing with the modern practicality of clutter clearing.
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 William Colby was the CIA’s first long-term North Vietnam-based operative. He was a Catholic Ivy League man who sounded more like a corporate executive than a secret agent. #2 The CIA began to send American Special Forces soldiers to train and assist the South Vietnamese who would execute Colby’s covert missions. The Green Berets and SEALs weren’t working for the CIA, but for CAS, an innocuous cover whose initials stood for Combined Area Studies. #3 The SEALs trained junk crews to land secret agents in the North and organized a civilian raiding force, the Sea Commandos, for hit-and-run coastal attacks. The CIA brought in Nationalist Chinese instructor pilots with hundreds of missions over mainland China very similar to what Ky’s men would fly. #4 The CIA had a program called Operation Switchback that transferred these Southeast Asian programs to the military in 1962, but President Kennedy’s assassination in 1963 delayed the transfer.

CHINA Their “Three Gorges Project” engineering masterpiece hasn’t gone as well as the world was told on CNN by the Communist Party. A disaster would be a more accurate description. Furthermore, an environmental disaster as well. The rice growing region has been decimated for years to come accounting for nearly 20% of their own rice output and India cannot make up the shortfall. This translates to 400 million Chinese with no rice to eat. Three retired US Navy Seals were hired to swim into the fjords along the south coast of China’s rugged shorelines to recon the activities there which are beyond the eyes of US satellites above. What the Seals discover and photograph and return to a fishing junk, then transmit back to a secret facility in South America, is the evidence needed to begin plans for retaliation. A major theft and resulting world war would begin. Great Britain’s family would abdicate their throne as a result. The Middle East would be shocked. Washington D.C. would be partially cleansed of graft and a “Countervailing Force” would manifest itself somewhere, somehow.
Richard Halliburton was the world famous adventurer who, in the 1920's and 1930's, thrilled his millions of adoring fans with tales of his daring exploits on his worldwide travels. He was one of the most popular and romantic figures of his time. THE SEA DRAGON is a novel about his last adventure ? his attempt to cross the wild Pacific in a Chinese junk. Known for his daring adventures, Richard Halliburton had to hide the fact that he was gay. What drove Halliburton to his adventurous extremes is something which drives us all: the need to experience life to the fullest, to escape the bounds of the ordinary. Looking out over Hong Kong Harbor from Victoria Peak at sunset, Halliburton describes the force which drives him this way: "There's a feeling ? do you know it? ? when your pulse races and you can hardly catch your breath. All the slights and frustrations of your life are forgotten ? and the world seems so full you could burst with pleasure and excitement. ... That's the feeling that I'm after. That's what keeps me going, time after time." He paused, looking out over the harbor, then continued: "Life closes in ? so swiftly ? and so often.
Two Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Officers entered the room. They introduced themselves and then the first thing they asked each of us was the most shocking question we could ever imagine.

“DO YOU BELIEVE YOUR MOTHER IS CAPABLE OF MURDER?”

In just a short time we all realized that the answer was irrelevant. The Task Force had already decided that our mom, Marni Yang, a hard-working single mother of three, was their target and they would do whatever it took to make her appear guilty, but first, they had to turn us against our mother.

“You better start telling us what we want to hear!” screamed the officer at teenager Andrew Yang. “One of you is going down, it's either going to be you or your mother! Your mother doesn't love you! No mother would put their kid in this position. So start talking, or you will go to prison for the rest of your life.”

“I'm not going to admit to something I didn’t do!” Andrew protested. “I also kept insisting that my mom was just as innocent as me. She was home with me the morning this murder took place,” but that was not what the police wanted to hear.

“It took the police seventeen months to pinned this murder on my mother,” says Emily Yang “And they did it by dividing all of us and destroying our family.”

“I was the closest one to my mother,” Brandon Yang states “I saw how the harassment, wore my mother down. We were a family under siege. The police never gave us a moment to recover from one attack before they launched another attack on us.”

Deceived into believing that her son would be put in prison for the rest of his life, Marni Yang confessed to a murder she didn’t commit. She was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Most people would be surprised to learn that false confessions are the leading cause of wrongful convictions.

“My Mom Marni” is a shocking tale of injustice in America. This true story is compelling, gripping and heart-breaking. In the end, you will be challenged to wrestle with the question: could this happen to me? Yes, it could because none of us are immune to abusive and coercive interrogation techniques, false confessions, and wrongful convictions.

“My Mom Marni” is yet another wakeup call to the American public about the horrors of the justice “system” which miscarries far more often than it should. This begs the question: “WHY?” The answer, which three underage children and their loving mother learned the hard way, is: Lacking the proper investigative talent to solve a crime, junk science, and subterfuge are used to concoct a case against a scapegoat.

For thousands of years China was a world to itself, cut off from the races of men. The main causes of this singular seclusion are simple:ー China was protected from serious invasion by her geographical position. Northward, it was no easy business for the barbarous intruder to find a way into China from the Manchurian plain, or for a Chinaman to find a way out; and it was still more difficult to effect a passage by force. To the North-West rose the forbidding walls of the Altai Mountains; and, between them and China, a broad and demon-haunted waste of sand blocked the way. Westward, huge interlocked ranges of Central Asiaーthe Thian Shan and Pamirsーmountains which o’er top Alp or Caucasus, which rival the loftiest Andes, and which are inferior only to Himalaya, presented perils in abundance. These difficulties surmounted, the vast, trackless sands of Gobi formed a second barrier; and the steep rocks of Ala-Shan and In-Shan were a third. To the South-West rose the plateau of Thibet, interlocking with the Pamirsーa plateau with a mean level of more than 12,000 feet, terminating southward in Himalaya, that highest and broadest of mountain-walls. To the South of China were the dense forests, deep valleys, and rapid rivers of Burma and Tonquin. Eastward the Celestial Empire was guarded by the sea: to reach China from India was a long and perilous voyage; and the boldest navigator might hesitate to entrust his clumsy craft to the caprice of the Indian Ocean, to thread his way through the tortuous straits of Malaysia, and to chance an encounter with the fierce islanders who lined them, only in the end to reach a jealous shore. The unwieldly Chinese junkーa town afloatーdid, however, make a periodic and prolonged voyageーat least in later daysーto India; and a few bands of bold, hardy traders were wont to cross over the formidable passes of Central Asia on horses, mules, or asses, and to traverse vast, trackless wastes on camels. They exchanged the products of India, Persia, and those States which were watered by the classic streams of Oxus and Jaxartes, for the silks and manufactures of Cathay. Chinese porcelain has been found in Egyptian tombs. China enjoyed a soil so productive of every kind of wealth that she was independent of commercial intercourse with other lands. Secure from all invaders but the scattered hordes of Mongolia, she developed a high and distinctive civilization, which became more and more fixed and rigid, but was superior in many respects to that of other Eastern States. By the Seventh Century of our Era, good roads, good inns, and an admirable system of canals rendered internal communication easy; the heavens had been surveyed by astronomical instruments of some precision; and the art of printing, which had not then been discovered long, was in use; although to this day the Chinese do without the valuable economy of an alphabet. Moreover the Chinese People preferred to be undisturbed by stimulus from without. Yet China transmitted her culture to her near and less civilized neighboursーJapan and the Indo-Chinese peninsulaーand claimed a precarious overlordship of semi-barbarous Manchuria, Mongolia, Eastern Turkestan and Thibet. During a long stretch of time, the powerful and jealous Persian Empire was a bar to intercourse with the far West; because it tried to preserve a monopoly of its own products. The records of early intercourse with other countries are few; and those few are meagre. Thirteen centuries before the age in which Hiuen-Tsiang lived, Embassies from distant nations would seem to have reached China. Marcus Aurelius despatched a mission (A.D. 166) to establish direct relations; it travelled by way of India; and failed. Carus sent another (A.D. 284).

The former Uncle Tupelo and current Son Volt musician presents snapshots of the people and places he encountered during his decades-long touring career.

In this collection of beautifully crafted autobiographical vignettes, Jay Farrar visits the places he’s journeyed to during his more than twenty years as a traveling musician. While recollections of Farrar’s parents and his formative childhood in the Missouri Ozarks are prominent throughout the stories, it is music and musicians that are given the most space and the final word, since music has been his creative impetus and driving force.

In writing these stories, Farrar found a natural inclination to focus on very specific experiences; a method analogous to the songwriting process. The highlights and pivotal experiences from that musical journey are all represented as the binding thread in these stories, illustrated throughout with photography from his life. If life is a movie, then these stories are the still frames.

“Falling Cars and Junkyard Dogs extends Farrar’s talents as he exhibits an eye for detail and a grasp of the human condition that proceeds directly from his own introspective nature.” ーAll About Jazz

“Provides some illumination of the creative mind of a very private artist.” ーKirkus Reviews

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】How To Trick Your Brain Into Loosing Weight【電子書籍】[ Shane Cuthbert ]

The problem is that we crave fast food too much, it is much like an invisible magnetic force pulling you towards bad habits. Its not as though we are putting a lot of effort into eating junk foods, its just that we can’t seem to pull ourselves away from. Sometimes we don’t even realise we are doing it, we are just acting on autopilot. We know that its more of a psychological thing than it is an appetite thing. So here’s a question.

What if you can reprogram your brain to crave healthier habits instead? If you could figure out a way to create that magnetic pull towards healthy foods, you wouldn’t have to keep trying to force yourself into eating healthy. Instead, you would be eating healthy foods on autopilot.

Here’s another question. Can this magnetism be changed? Could your programming be reprogrammed? Well here’s the thing, most people don’t recall feeling particularly drawn to junk foods at earlier ages, so evidently that magnetism has changed over time. If it can be changed in one direction it can certainly be changed in another.

Now if you can rewire that magnetism to pull yourself towards healthier eating habits than why not do the same for other habits like exercise? If you could reprogram your brain to feel as much motivation towards exercise as much as you feel motivated to sit down and watch TV, just imagine how easy exercise and healthy eating would become.

In this new and exciting book Shane reveals exactly how to do that, as a WORLD FAMOUS Life, Addiction, Business and relationship coach he has managed to help thousands of people struggling with hurdles and blockages getting in the way. Shane uses the same formula and psychological knowledge used to hypnotise smokers into quitting harmful nicotine addictions, couples fighting and arguing through divorce, gamblers and addicts fighting addiction and many other problematic behaviours developed and conditioned in the mind of children and adults.

Never before has someone applied 'psychology' to diet, exercise and health. The benefit of uncovering these psychological secrets are limitless and the tricks found in this book can be used to help you overcome almost any mental obstacle holding you back currently or in the future.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Switchwords For Health & Weight Loss Miracles The Subtle Art Of Giving A F*ck About The Words You Speak!【電子書籍】[ Monika Pavlickova ]

Apply the power of MAGICAL WORDS to improve your health and lose weight fast.

WARNING! Cookie-cutter weight loss advice is at epidemic proportions. Case in point: The world is fatter than ever before, despite the books shelves bulging with diet advice!

Most guys have no idea that a major obstacle to you having a slim and toned body is in what you think, speak and eat. This problem is made 100X worse by all the fad diets and crash weight loss programs out there - low carb, ketogenic, etc. This is a huge problem because everybody responds to nutrition differently. Odds are 90% that any particular program will only make you flabbier and pastier. I created a simple combination of MAGICAL WORDS called SWITCHWORDS that will solve this problem. The words we speak, our beliefs, actions, visions contribute to the reality we create. If you would like a different reality, then you have to start by changing the WORDS you speak every day.

Let me briefly tell you my story...

My ex-boyfriend was a tall, handsome ex-air force military who became a devil's advocate. He sold his soul to a devil to become a movie star. He was willing to do anything possible to become one of the movie stars.

He was a gym junkie and control freak. As a result of that, he was pushing me to lose weight and be in shape too. I tried every diet on the planet, joined the gym, took slimming pills but nothing really worked for me. My partner used to put too much pressure on me regarding my weight and appearance. My self-esteem went down the hole and my depression was getting worse and worse. I didn't feel good and beautiful enough anymore.

I was in my 20s and spent most of my time fighting my own nature. I was trying to be just like every superstar that I admired, killing myself in the process. For several years, my mantra was: "Massive ACTION solves every problem!" Which was just incredibly stupid, because "MASSIVE action" without a great strategy, only gives you more problems.

Your efforts create work that is unfocused and dissipates your energy. I spent thousands of hours sweating in the gym, throwing money out of the window by trying every diet on the planet and getting more fat and ill during the process. I constantly put myself in situations where my greatest strengths got shoved in the closet, and my weaknesses were on display for all to see, including my increased weight, all day long. I had nobody to turn to so I turned to alcohol and junk food for help to soothe the pain. I went through a mental breakdown and wanted to commit suicide many times. I had no hope and didn't know how to get out of the black magic spell. One morning when I woke up in pain and covered in blood and emotionally, spiritually and physically depleted with broken glass on the floor I knew something is gotta change NOW! I couldn't get up and passed out. I started to see the light at the end of the tunnel when I saw the flashing light of the ambulance.

Who did that? I DID.

Who does that? YOU DO. Up to your eyeballs in debt, overweight and bleeding HEART. Just to tell your family you are in a relationship and own a business. The Bloodsucking Monster, my ex-fiance gave me a red DIAMOND ring.

I called it a "blood diamond". Because I knew every bit of the blood, sweat, and tears it took to be in that "relationship." He would twist that ring around my finger the whole time he leered at me and talked down to you. His stone face, a steely glare that could kill a spider on the spot.

I lived with my neck under the Monster's boot until the day I discovered and applied the secrets mentioned in this book SWITCHWORDS for Health and Weight Loss and my other books REALITY CREATION SECRETS and SWITCHWORDS MIRACLES. Spending thousands of pounds on the weight loss diets did not work.

Applying ancient knowledge from my books and choosing my own preferred reality did work. In 21 days I went from 100-pound GORILLA to Cinderella with a little effort and easy strategy. I started applying SWITCHWORDS**.**

A National Book Award-winning satire about the unchecked power of American capitalism, written more than three decades before the 2008 financial crisis.

At the center of J R is J R Vansant, a very average sixth grader from Long Island with torn sneakers, a runny nose, and a juvenile fascination with junk-mail get-rich-quick offers. Responding to one, he sees a small return; soon, he is running a paper empire out of a phone booth in the school hallway. Everyone from the school staff to the municipal government to the squabbling heirs of a player-piano company to the titans of Wall Street and the politicians in Washington will be caught up in the endlessly ballooning bubble of the J R Family of Companies.

First published in 1975 and winner of the National Book Award in 1976, J R is an appallingly funny and all-too-prophetic depiction of America’s romance with finance. It is also a book about suburban development and urban decay, divorce proceedings and disputed wills, the crumbling facade of Western civilization and the impossible demands of love and art, with characters ranging from the earnest young composer Edward Bast to the berserk publicist Davidoff. Told almost entirely through dialogue, William Gaddis’s novel is both a literary tour de force and an unsurpassed reckoning with the way we live now.

Near sunset, one day in early October, not too long ago for some of us to remember with distinctness, Mr. Foss, United States consul at Florence, Italy, took a cab, as on other days, to the Porta Romana. Here, where the out-of-town tariff comes into effect, he paid his man, and set out to walk the rest of the way, thus meeting the various needs he felt: that for economy,he was a family man with daughters to clothe, that for exercise, his wife told him he was growing fat,and the need in general for an opportunity to think. He had found that walking aided reflection, that walking in beautiful places started the spring of apt and generous ideas. Though in his modest way a scholar, he was not as yet an author, but Florence had inspired him with the desire to write a book. Just beyond the Roman Gate begins the long Viale dei Colli,Avenue of the Hills, which climbs and winds, broad, shady, quiet, between lines of gardens and villas, occupied largely by foreigners, to the Piazzale, whence Michelangelo’s boyish colossus gazes with a slight frown across Florence, outspread at his feet. Mr. Foss, as he mounted the easy grade, and noted with a liking unabated after years the pleasantness of each habitation glimpsed through iron railings and embowering green, thought how privileged a person should feel, after all, whose affairs involved residence in Italy. This recognized good fortune had not been properly tasted before another aspect of the thing presented itself for consideration....The consul felt a sigh trying to escape him, and turning from the images whose obtrusion had called it up from the depths, directed his attention to a different set of subjects, unwilling at the moment to be troubled. The glories and iniquities of that great family whose cannon-ballsor pills?adorn so many of the ’scutcheons on Florentine street-corners and palace-fronts are what he selected as the theme for his meditations, a choice which seems less odd when we know that his book, the labor and pleasure of his spare hours, was a study of the Medici. He had not been busy many minutes with their supplanted policies and extinct ambitions before these dropped back into the past whence he had drawn them, and his mind gave itself over to an exercise more curious than reconstructing a dead epoch. A shortish, stoutish man, with a beginning of baldness on his crown and gray in his mustache, was trying by the whole force of a sympathetic imagination to fit himself into the shoes, occupy the very skin, of a delicate young girl, to look at the world through her eyes and feel life with her pulses. Thus absorbed, he hardly saw the posts of his own carriage gate; he passed unnoticing between his flower-beds, up his stone steps and came to himself only when, rubbing the hands he had just washed, he entered the dining-room and saw his wife. “Where are the girls?” he asked even before kissing her, for the most casual eye must be informed by the blank look of the table that instead of being laid for half a dozen as usual, it was prepared for a meagre two. Mrs. Foss was fond of sitting in the dining-room, which had a glass door into the garden on the side farthest from the road. There she read her book while waiting for dinnertime and her husband. The good gentleman did not always come directly home from his office. He had the love of dropping into dim churches, of loitering on bridges, of fingering the junk in old shops, but he was considerately never late for dinner. Mrs. Foss rose to receive her husband’s salutation, and while answering his question settled herself at the table; for she had caught sight of a domestic peeping in at the door to see if the masters were there to be served. “Leslie and Brenda went to call on the Hunts,” she gave her account, “and presently the Hunts’ man came with a note from Mrs. Hunt, asking if the girls could stay to dine and go to the theater.

A Beat-era novel of heroin addiction in 1950s New York City that was called “a treasure” by Ken Kesey.

This is the journal of Joe Necchi, a junkie living on a barge that plies the rivers and bays of New York. Joe’s world is the half-world of drugs and addictsーthe world of furtive fixes in sordid Harlem apartments, of police pursuits down deserted subway stations. Junk for Necchi, however, is a tool, freely chosen and fully justified; he is Cain, the malcontent, the profligate, the rebel who lives by no one’s rules but his own.

Author Alexander Trocchi’s muse was drugsーbut in this novel, he does not romanticize the source of his inspiration. If the experience of heroin, of the “fix,” is central to Cain’s Book, both its destructive force and the possibilities it holds for creativity are recognized and accepted without apology.

“The classic of the late-1950s account of heroin addiction . . . An un-self-forgiving existentialism, rendered with writerly exactness and muscularity, set this novel apart from all others of the genre.” ーWilliam S. Burroughs, author of Naked Lunch

A small team from the US Navy arrives in Vietnam in the spring of 1962. At first, its members only hear whispers about what they are supposed to accomplish. The unit goes by the name MTT 10-62 because its mission is so secret. This is the first Sea, Air and Land teamーlater known as the SEALsーand it’s gearing up to train a group of volunteers from the Vietnamese Junk Force in counterinsurgency and maritime warfare. Told mostly through the perspective of Chris “Doc” Davidーa first class hospital corpsman, first class diver, and diving medical technicianーand Lt. Bill Evans, SEAL Doc shows how the first SEALs work in conjunction with Army Special Forces and others to stop the spread of communism. While the SEALs are outstanding fighters and tacticians, they get little material support to accomplish their mission. The team arrives in Da Nang with nothing but stateside uniforms, and their vehicles and gasoline must be “liberated” from Vietnamese motor pools. Meanwhile, the daily challenges the SEALs face are preparing them for a final explosive mission and setting the stage for the future development of Navy SEALs in SEAL Doc, a historical novel based on the true story of the SEALs.
