【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Aero-Neurosis Pilots of the First World War and the Psychological Legacies of Combat【電子書籍】[ Mark C. Wilkins ]

"Lays bare the grim reality of life on a frontline squadron . . . the comprehensive physical, emotional, and mental decline these aviators endured." ー Donna's Book Blog
The young men who flew and fought during the First World War had no idea what was awaiting them. The "technology shock" that coalesced at the Western Front was not envisaged by any of the leadership or medical establishment. Despite the attendant horrors many men experienced, some felt that the dynamic context of aerial combat was something that, after the war, they still longed for . . .

Doctors argued over best practice for treatment. Of course, the military wanted these men to return to duty as quickly as possible; with mounting casualties, each country needed every man. Aviation psychiatry arose as a new subset of the field, attempting to treat psychological symptoms previously unseen in combatants. The unique conditions of combat flying produced a whole new type of neurosis.

Terms such as "Aero-neurosis" were coined to provide the necessary label yet, like shell shock, they were inadequate when it came to describing the full and complete shock to the psyche.

Mark C. Wilkins finds the psychology undergirding historical events fascinating and of chief interest to him as an historian. He has included expert medical testimony and excerpts where relevant in a fascinating book that explores the legacies of aerial combat, illustrating the ways in which pilots had to amalgamate their suffering and experiences into their postwar lives. Their attempts to do so can perhaps be seen as an extension of their heroism.

"An original and absorbing study of the psychological factors of the first air war." ーFiretrench

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】Shell Shock Cinema Weimar Culture and the Wounds of War【電子書籍】[ Anton Kaes ]

How war trauma haunted the films of Weimar Germany
Shell Shock Cinema explores how the classical German cinema of the Weimar Republic was haunted by the horrors of World War I and the the devastating effects of the nation's defeat. In this exciting new book, Anton Kaes argues that masterworks such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, The Nibelungen, and Metropolis, even though they do not depict battle scenes or soldiers in combat, engaged the war and registered its tragic aftermath. These films reveal a wounded nation in post-traumatic shock, reeling from a devastating defeat that it never officially acknowledged, let alone accepted.
Kaes uses the term "shell shock"ーcoined during World War I to describe soldiers suffering from nervous breakdownsーas a metaphor for the psychological wounds that found expression in Weimar cinema. Directors like Robert Wiene, F. W. Murnau, and Fritz Lang portrayed paranoia, panic, and fear of invasion in films peopled with serial killers, mad scientists, and troubled young men. Combining original close textual analysis with extensive archival research, Kaes shows how this post-traumatic cinema of shell shock transformed extreme psychological states into visual expression; how it pushed the limits of cinematic representation with its fragmented story lines, distorted perspectives, and stark lighting; and how it helped create a modernist film language that anticipated film noir and remains incredibly influential today.
A compelling contribution to the cultural history of trauma, Shell Shock Cinema exposes how German film gave expression to the loss and acute grief that lay behind Weimar's sleek fa?ade.

The M113 has become as much a recognizable part of the US military machine at war as the Bell UH-1 Iroquois and M16 assault rifle. Earning its stripes in the jungles and highlands of Vietnam, it became the most widely armored vehicle of the campaign. Such was its prowess that the Viet Cong gave it the nickname Green Dragon on account of its ability to go virtually anywhere.

Its groundbreaking aluminum hull gives the M113 a relatively low weight of 12ts, this allows it to be easily transported by air and gives it an amphibious ability. The design was also easy to modify and can carry a range of support and indirect fire weapons. From mortars to ballistic missiles, the M113 spawned a progeny of useful and innovative vehicles.

The base M113 is lightly armored and safe against only the lightest of small arms fire and shell splinter. As a result a range of up-armor packages have been used in the past, from sandbags to complex appliqu? armur.

80,000 M113s of all types have been produced and are in use with over 50 countries, making it one of the most widely used armored fighting vehicles to be produced. Indeed such was its popularity that the US bought their final M113s in as late as 2007.

The M113 was designed and developed by the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) to replace the heavier and less reliable steel-bodied M59 and M75 armored personnel carriers. It was specifically designed to be lighter, air-portable and have amphibious capability. Carrying a crew of two, driver and commander, who manned the M113’s only weapon, a .50cal machine gun, the M113 would transport 11 soldiers into combat before withdrawing to the rear.

Powered initially by a V8 petrol engine the M113 would be continuously up-engined throughout its frontline and subsequent rear support lifespan. Changes included improved suspension, smoke dischargers and externally fitted fuel tanks. Other changes have included armored commander’s turrets and slat armor.

This LandCraft title looks at the M113s development where the FMC sought to utilize its chassis into as many roles as possible, from smoke generators to flamethrowers. The book also looks at how the M113 was adapted for use by numerous overseas customers and how these are upgraded to suit local conditions.

Finally the title looks at the M113’s changing roles in the more sophisticated contemporary battlescape and how it’s still providing service in theatres across the world in a variety of roles, both combat and support.

For the modeler there is nothing more important than the little things and this image-rich section of Land Crafts M113 title delivers the goods. Filled with crisp photos that show the M113’s many details, combined with helpful accompanying text, forms an enviable visual guide for the enthusiast and modeler alike.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】The Best War Ever America and World War II【電子書籍】[ Michael C. C. Adams ]

The most readableーand searingly honestーshort book ever written on this pivotal conflict.

Was World War II really such a "good war"? Popular memory insists that it was, in fact, "the best war ever." After all, we knew who the enemy was, and we understood what we were fighting for. The war was good for the economy. It was liberating for women. A battle of tanks and airplanes, it was a "cleaner" war than World War I. Although we did not seek the conflictーor so we believedーAmericans nevertheless rallied in support of the war effort, and the nation's soldiers, all twelve million of them, were proud to fight. But according to historian Michael C. C. Adams, our memory of the war era as a golden age is distorted. It has left us with a misleadingーeven dangerousーlegacy, one enhanced by the nostalgia-tinged retrospectives of Stephen E. Ambrose and Tom Brokaw. Disputing many of our common assumptions about the period, Adams argues in The Best War Ever that our celebratory experience of World War II is marred by darker and more sordid realities.

In the book, originally published in 1994, Adams challenges stereotypes to present a view of World War II that avoids the simplistic extremes of both glorification and vilification. The Best War Ever charts the complex diplomatic problems of the 1930s and reveals the realities of ground combat: no moral triumph, it was in truth a brutal slog across a blasted landscape. Adams also exposes the myth that the home front was fully united behind the war effort, demonstrating how class, race, gender, and age divisions split Americans. Meanwhile, in Europe and Asia, shell-shocked soldiers grappled with emotional and physical trauma, rigorously enforced segregation, and rampant venereal disease.

In preparing this must-read new edition, Adams has consulted some seventy additional sources on topics as varied as the origins of Social Security and a national health system, the Allied strategic bombing campaign, and the relationship of traumatic brain injuries to the adjustment problems of veterans. The revised book also incorporates substantial developments that have occurred in our understanding of the course and character of the war, particularly in terms of the human consequences of fighting. In a new chapter, "The Life Cycle of a Myth," Adams charts image-making about the war from its inception to the present. He contrasts it with modern-day rhetoric surrounding the War on Terror, while analyzing the real-world consequences that result from distorting the past, including the dangerous idea that only through (perpetual) military conflict can we achieve lasting peace.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】At War with PTSD Battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with Virtual Reality【電子書籍】[ Robert N. McLay, MD PhD ]

The Spartans called it The Trembler; recent history has seen it termed shell shock, combat fatigue, soldier’s heart, and Vietnam Syndrome. Whatever the name, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has always been with us. With 20 percent of the Veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq exhibiting PTSD symptoms, the United States military has a strong interest in combating the condition. Navy psychiatrist Robert N. McLay has been at the forefront of these efforts. This is his story of using virtual reality to treat Service Members and Veterans with PTSD.

As a practicing psychiatrist who works with Veterans and civilians coping with PTSD, McLay had known for years before the September 11, 2001, attacks that effective treatments for the condition were elusive. When active duty called, he met the challenge, becoming the primary investigator on PTSD treatment projects that had Service Members face the ghosts of war in a computer simulator. After using this new form of exposure therapy on the home front, McLay and his team believed they had found a promising way to work with warriors broken by combat, so in 2008 they took it to the front line in Fallujah, Iraq, with the First Marine Expeditionary Force.

Several years into the project, McLay recounts openly and with bleak honesty the successes, failures, and limits of virtual reality treatment for PTSD. Filled with poignant firsthand accounts of war and its psychological aftermath, At War with PTSD explains the difficulties of using this specialized technology in the field and discusses such challenges as helping people who refuse to believe in PTSD, including those diagnosed with it. So far, the virtual reality program shows more promise than traditional therapies. And although McLay remains unsure why or how, his experiences hold out hope for those suffering from this devastating disorder.

"Goodbye to All That" is a powerful memoir written by Robert Graves, reflecting on his experiences during World War I. The book offers a candid and deeply personal account of the horrors of war and the impact it had on his life. Graves, a British soldier, provides readers with a vivid portrayal of the brutality and chaos of the battlefield. He shares his journey from a young man eager to serve his country to a disillusioned veteran grappling with the aftermath of conflict. The memoir begins with Graves' early life and education. He describes his upbringing in a comfortable middle-class family and his time at Oxford University. These formative years are marked by a sense of privilege and optimism. However, this innocence is shattered when he enlists in the army at the outbreak of the war. Graves captures the excitement and fervor of young men rushing to join the fight. He conveys the sense of duty and patriotism that motivated him and his peers to enlist. As Graves recounts his experiences in the trenches, he provides a stark contrast to the romanticized notions of war often portrayed in literature. He describes the grim realities of life on the front lines, including the constant threat of death, the squalor of the trenches, and the psychological toll of combat. His writing is raw and unflinching, allowing readers to grasp the true horrors faced by soldiers. Graves does not shy away from depicting the gruesome injuries, the fear, and the trauma that became part of daily life. Throughout the memoir, Graves reflects on the friendships he formed with fellow soldiers. He shares poignant stories of camaraderie and loyalty amidst the chaos. These relationships serve as a lifeline for many soldiers, providing comfort and support in the face of unimaginable adversity. However, Graves also highlights the fragility of these bonds, as the constant threat of loss looms over them. The emotional weight of war is palpable in his writing, as he grapples with the reality of losing friends and comrades. Graves' account also delves into the psychological effects of war. He explores the concept of shell shock, now known as post-traumatic stress disorder, and its devastating impact on soldiers. His own experiences of fear, anxiety, and nightmares are vividly depicted. He emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the mental scars left by war, which often go unnoticed in society. Graves advocates for understanding and compassion towards veterans who struggle to reintegrate into civilian life. In addition to his experiences in combat, Graves reflects on the broader social and political implications of the war. He critiques the leadership and decisions made by those in power, questioning the motives behind the conflict. His disillusionment with authority is evident as he grapples with the senselessness of the war and its consequences. Graves challenges the glorification of war and urges readers to consider the human cost of such conflicts. As the memoir progresses, Graves recounts his eventual return to civilian life. He describes the challenges he faced in adjusting to a world forever changed by the war. The transition from soldier to civilian is fraught with difficulties. Graves struggles to find his place in a society that cannot fully comprehend the trauma he has endured. He reflects on the alienation and sense of loss that many veterans experience upon returning home. "Goodbye to All That" is not only a personal narrative but also a historical document. It provides valuable insights into the experiences of soldiers during World War I. Graves' writing captures the essence of a generation marked by conflict and upheaval. His reflections serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and the lasting impact of war on individuals and society. The memoir is notable for its literary merit and candidness. Graves' prose is both poignant and evocative, drawing readers into his world. His ability to articulate complex emotions and experiences makes the narrative relatable and impactful. The book has become a classic in war literature and continues to resonate with readers today. "Goodbye to All That" is a profound exploration of the realities of war and its aftermath. Robert Graves' memoir offers a unique perspective on the experiences of soldiers during World War I. Through his honest and reflective writing, he sheds light on the physical and emotional toll of conflict.

"7 Fragments: Understanding Mental Health Beyond Labels" offers an intimate exploration of seven mental health conditions through the lived experiences of complex, fully-realized characters. Rather than clinical case studies, these narratives present schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, OCD, depression, PTSD, anxiety, and bipolar disorder as facets of human consciousness that deserve understanding rather than stigmatization.

Through Alexander's philosophical questioning of reality, Maya's internal system navigation, Andreas's ritualistic patterns, Artemis's mathematical precision masking profound sadness, a veteran's enduring combat wounds, Thomas's existential anxiety, and Pulse's emotional pendulum, the book reveals how these conditions shape but do not define individual lives. Each fragment examines not just the personal impact of these experiences but also society's evolving language around mental healthーfrom "shell shock" to "PTSD"ーand how terminology can either bridge or widen the gap between understanding and stigma.

This work advocates for approaching mental health differences with curiosity rather than fear, recognizing the full spectrum of human consciousness.

Ford Madox Ford's post-war masterpiece, Parade's End, is recognized as one of the great British novels about the First World War. This selection from his other extensive writings about the war, published and unpublished, sheds light on the tetralogy. It includes reminiscences, an unfinished novel, stories, and excerpts from letters. Ford was in his forties when he enlisted: this made him one of the few writers of his maturity to fight on the Western Front. His experience of combat was limited, but he was in the Battle of the Somme, was often under bombardment, and suffered from shell-shock. His largely psychological response to the war anticipates the recent renewal of interest in trauma and shell-shock. This book provides important testimony by one of the best writers of his generation.

The enemy isn't always outside the wire. Sometimes, the deadliest threats wear your own uniform.

Captain Jack Thompson is a seasoned Army officer on the brink of retirement. He's spent years following orders, surviving deployment after deployment, and preparing to walk away from the war machine. But just weeks before his contract ends, he's diverted to Kandahar under the guise of a routine logistics audit.

It should have been simple. Count crates. File reports. Leave quietly.

Instead, Jack uncovers whispers of missing supplies, falsified inventory logs, and suspiciously "spoiled" medical crates that weigh far more than they should. What begins as paperwork quickly unravels into a dark web of corruption and cover-ups. When soldiers start turning up dead-unidentified, mutilated, and hidden in body bags with no matching casualty reports-Jack realizes he's not auditing a base. He's auditing a crime scene.

And someone powerful is watching his every move.

Then comes Layla-an impossibly beautiful, sharp-tongued interpreter with ties to both U.S. intelligence and a hidden past that cuts deeper than war itself. She's more than a translator. She's the daughter of a Taliban commander, raised in shadows, and trained to survive. Her beauty disarms. Her mind is a weapon. And the moment she locks eyes with Jack, something shifts. They shouldn't fall for each other-not in a place like this. Not while secrets threaten to swallow them whole.

But in a land where nothing is certain, their chemistry ignites into a connection that's as undeniable as it is dangerous.

As their investigation deepens, Jack and Layla uncover a far-reaching conspiracy that spans continents. U.S. military gear is being smuggled out through body bags and sealed coffins, laundered through foreign shell companies, and sold on the black market. Drug cartels, warlords, corrupt contractors-even NATO officers-all have a piece of the pie. Billions of dollars are disappearing under the radar, and at the center of it all is a network operating from within Jack's own command.

Every discovery brings new twists:

Secret CIA raids with no oversight.

Disguised arms deals hidden in "humanitarian" shipments.

Rogue Afghan factions profiting from American supplies.

And a private warehouse in Berlin that doesn't exist on any official map.

When a coded message warns Jack to stop-or else-he and Layla are forced to flee. From the deserts of Afghanistan to the rooftops of Berlin and the quiet caf?s of Paris, they search for one final name. One final piece of evidence. One undeniable truth that could bring it all crashing down.

But with every step, the noose tightens.

Back home, a different kind of war awaits-one of politics, silence, and revenge. Even after escaping the battlefield, Jack and Layla are hunted. Someone doesn't want their truth told. Someone powerful. Someone deadly.

Their love is real. Their truth is dangerous.

And the war is far from over.

Sins of Kandahar is a hard-hitting military and political thriller from combat veteran and counterintelligence agent Tony Adjuder. Based on real-world experiences and the quiet betrayals whispered in foxholes and backchannels, this novel pulls no punches. It blends action, intelligence, romance, and moral complexity in a way few war stories dare to.

If you loved American Sniper, The Terminal List, Homeland, or The Spy Who Came in from the Cold-this is your next mission.

A conspiracy thriller with a heartbeat. A war story with a soul. A love story set on fire.

What will you uncover when you dare to look behind the wire?

The report focuses on various issues affecting the medical care and treatment of veterans who had returned from the war, including the management of physical injuries, mental health concerns, and the administrative and logistical challenges of the hospital system. Given the scale of the war and the number of soldiers affected by both physical wounds and the psychological toll of combat, this conference aimed to improve the quality and efficiency of care in the veteran hospitals and to streamline the resources and policies to better serve the men who had served in the war.Key topics likely discussed in the report include the establishment of new medical facilities, the training of hospital staff, and the implementation of specialized treatments for veterans suffering from conditions such as "shell shock" (now understood as PTSD). Additionally, there would have been attention paid to ensuring that veterans received proper benefits, including compensation and care, as well as creating a more organized system for handling the post-war medical and psychological needs of former soldiers.

The essays in the book investigate the causes and manifestations of war neuroses, commonly referred to as "shell shock" at the time. These neuroses include symptoms such as anxiety, nightmares, emotional numbness, and other psychological disturbances experienced by soldiers exposed to the horrors of modern warfare. The authors analyze how the extreme stress of combat, combined with the repression of emotions and instincts, contributes to the development of these conditions.Freud, in his contribution, discusses the role of trauma and repression in war neuroses, expanding on his theory of psychoanalysis. He suggests that these neuroses are the result of unresolved internal conflicts, exacerbated by the unbearable external circumstances of war. The other contributors, including Ferenczi and Abraham, offer clinical observations and case studies to support these ideas, presenting methods for treating war neuroses through psychoanalytic therapy.

【電子書籍なら、スマホ・パソコンの無料アプリで今すぐ読める!】General George S. Patton and the Art of Leadership One of America’s Greatest Ever Generals【電子書籍】[ William Nester ]

“Nester brings out clearly the features of Patton’s buoyant dynamic leadership… an important addition to the stock of modern military biographies.” ? The NYMAS Review

For General George S. Patton, “Leadership is the thing that wins battles. I have itーbut I’ll be damned if I can define it. Probably it consists in knowing what you want to do and then doing it and getting mad if anyone steps in the way. Self-confidence and leadership are twin brothers.”

Indeed, Patton excelled at virtually every dimension of leadership, most vitally as a war commander. His record as a general is clear. The larger, more armored, and better supplied his armies, and the freer he was to decide what to do with them, the more rapid and further they advanced to inflict more defeats on the enemy. In that no other American army commander matched him during World War II. That ranks Patton among the Valhalla of America’s greatest generals, with him most resembling Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and Nathan Bedford Forrest as a fast-moving, hard-hitting commander who repeatedly outflanked and devastated enemy forces.

Patton led from the front and tried to inspire his troops by being a model officer who exemplified bravery, problem-solving, tactical brilliance, and decisiveness. He was in near constant motion from his headquarters to rear echelon and front line troops, everywhere exhorting them to greater efforts and overcoming challenges, at times enduring shell fire, strafing, mines, snipers, and other dangers. His greatest attribute was his drive to be the best at whatever he chose or was ordered to do. He recognized that developing a successful military career depended not just on will and chance but on incessant training and study. Yet he believed that instincts were just as vital as skills in being a successful leader: “I have a sixth sense in war and…can put myself in the enemies head and I am also willing to take chances.”

Patton harbored plenty of flaws. He was a narcissist who constantly strove to be center-stage and outshine his rivals. He contrived an idealized version of himself as the epitome of the brilliant general and fearless soldier, immaculately dressed, and spent his life playing that role. He was a braggart who regaled listeners with at times exaggerated tales of his past deeds and those yet to come. His boasting did have one positive element. He sought to surpass his past glories with greater future victories.

Patton seesawed between elation and despair, rage and compassion. He could chew out a subordinate for some mistake in the morning and comfort him for a similar mistake in the afternoon. His quick-temper and provocative views often overpowered his self-control. Twice that cost him an army command. During Germany’s occupation in August 1945, he casually quipped to several reporters that being a Nazi in Germany was no different from being a Republican or Democrat in the United States. For that Eisenhower relieved him from Third Army’s command. Most notoriously, during the Sicily campaign he slapped two soldiers suffering combat fatigue that he accused of malingering.

General George S. Patton and the Art of Leadership is his most psychologically penetrating biography that captures the paradoxical character behind his brilliant military feats and often dismaying failures. Throughout Patton explains his values and deeds through hundreds of quotes along with scores of insights from those who knew himーcomrades and critics alike.

The shelling stopped on Nov. 11, 1918, sending millions of American soldiers back to the United States to pick up where they had left off before joining or being drafted into the war effort. Doughboys were sent off to fight and many returned as men, irreparably damaged physically and mentally. The years following WWI were defined, in part in the United States, by the Spanish flu, Prohibition, bootleg whiskey, drug usage, and new drug laws. Amid these changes, traumatized young men returned from the so-called Great War and tried to fit back into their old lives. Many did and many did not ー This novel, The Deadening, deals with two who did not.

Set in the early 1920s, The Deadening is the story of two American doughboys, both casualties, back from the WWI and the paths they travel ー literal and existential. In 1921, the shadow of WWI hangs over two American veterans’ home from the war. Drafted doughboys, Harrell Hickman and Willem Redd, find themselves in the northwestern territory of Nebraska on opposite sides of the law. Sheriff Redd suffers from physical wounds, while Hickman lives with a little understood condition, then labelled as shell shock. They return home in a time of societal upheaval and their paths intersect in the town of Wisdom, where the bond of combat veterans is not enough to save them from tragedy. Harrell Hickman walks away from an overcrowded veteran’s hospital on the east coast where he has been hospitalized for “shell shock”: he has no visible scars. Harrell has no family to return to, no ties to any community. His ability to cope largely depends on alcohol and laudanum. Hopping freights west, he ends up in Wisdom, a small Nebraskan town where he encounters Willem Redd, also a veteran. Redd grew up in Wisdom, is married with children, owns a mercantile, and serves as sheriff for the territory, despite his physical wounds: he lost an arm and an eye in the trenches. Unlike Hickman, he has the love of a wife and support from the community, which has helped him cope, though he too has been irrevocably damaged. Hickman goes to work for John Conover, a rancher, some distance from Wisdom. But Hickman’s negligence and drug use results in two unexpected murdersーthe killing of Conover and the death of Conover’s son. Sheriff Redd sets out for the ranch with his deputy Tim Smallwood to investigate and a fatal clash between the two ex-soldiers ensues.

This narrative tale will be complemented by uncaptioned photographs that evoke Hickman and Will Redd’s lives during trench warfare in Europe and after returning to the U.S. The Deadening is relevant to modern readers as American veterans continue to face the overwhelming psychological challenges that battle thrust them into.

Forever Wild, Forever Home invites readers to discover the magic of The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, the premier large carnivore sanctuary in the world.

In 1980, Pat Craig rescued a baby jaguar he christened Freckles and took his first bold steps on a forty-year journey to combat the growing crisis of exotic animal captivity, abuse, and trafficking ? one rescue at a time. Today more than 200 bears, 60 African lions, and 70 tigers, as well as jaguars, leopards, mountain lions, wolves, and other exotic animals, both large and small, enjoy peace, comfort, and contentment in enormous habitats on thousands of acres of The Wild Animal Sanctuary’s prairie and canyonlands. Rescued from mostly horrific situations, they are survivors, with much to teach us about courage, resilience, and hope. Their lives resonate with our own.

With over 100 color photos, this absorbing, thoughtful, and timely narrative offers an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look at what it is really like to care for wild carnivores. Both heartwarming and humorous, Forever Wild, Forever Home honors the nobility and wellbeing of the animals who call the Sanctuary home, and the heroic and gratifying labors of those who care for them.

Join Sanctuary teams on rescues of giant Alaskan Kodiak bears languishing in the Florida tropics, a lion held captive by a fortune teller in a tiny Mexican town, two big cats marooned and starving on a typhoon-ravaged island in the Pacific Ocean, and thirty-nine tigers owned by Joe Exotic, the “Tiger King” of Netflix fame. Meet Colo Colo, an angry African lion from Bolivia; Tasha Joy, a tiger who didn’t know she was a tiger; the ever-busy grizzly bears, Tiny who tips the scales at 1,000 pounds and his friend Natasha; Diego, a white tiger; Jumanji, a black leopard; Lambert, a lion who finally learns to roar ? and many more. Learn how the Mile into the Wild Walkway, the longest elevated pedestrian footbridge in the world, enables sky-high visitors to see wild animals in vast habitats; how staff and volunteers create cozy houses and unique playgrounds for the Sanctuary’s (mostly) furry residents; and what happens when it’s time for a large carnivore to visit the doctor or dentist.

At The Wild Animal Sanctuary, tigers chuff in greeting, bears bask under brilliantly blue skies, mountain lions purr with joy, and African lions roar in winter. The Sanctuary is often seen as the last hope for the animals who are rescued and brought here to their forever home. But the thousands of people who visit, support, work, and volunteer here know that this is the place where hope begins.

About the Author

Melanie and Mark Shellenbarger never set out to become animal welfare advocates working to stop the captive wildlife crisis in its tracks. But on an April morning just a few years ago they gazed across the broad meadows and enormous habitats of The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado and what they saw changed their lives. African lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, grizzly bears, black bears, and other wild animals had been rescued from a hellish existence to this heaven on earth. Little did they know that the experience would inspire them to embark on an all-encompassing endeavor -- writing this book commemorating the forty-year history of The Wild Animal Sanctuary.

Melanie is an architectural historian and retired faculty member of the Department of Architecture at the University of Colorado. Mark is a retired business executive who managed a variety of global operations with a British multinational company.
