One man' s fight to turn the tide of low expectations. When Chris Sarra arrived as the first Aboriginal principal of Cherbourg State School, it was a time of high hopes but low expectations in Indigenous education. Over six years, he transformed the school into a national success story. Along the way, he battled the media, the education system and a culture of complacency. Good Morning, Mr Sarra is the inspiring life story of a young boy from a country town who grew up to become Queensland' s Australian of the Year, a subject of ABC' s Australian Story and one of the most outspoken and recognised educators in the country. His leadership institute and its nationally acclaimed ‘ strong and smart' philosophy, now used in many schools, means that Indigenous children no longer hope for a better education; they can expect it. In this anniversary edition, Chris Sarra reflects on his recent life and career achievements, from becoming a marathon runner to advocating for the marginalised as a director-general in state government, and how his work is helping forge a path to Treaty.

Stephen P H Butler Leacock FRSC was born on 30th December 1869 in Swanmore, near Southampton, England. He was the third of eleven children.

The family emigrated to Canada in 1876, settling on a 100-acre farm in Sutton, Ontario. There Leacock was home-schooled until, funded by his grandfather, he was enrolled into the elite private school Upper Canada College in Toronto. Academically he was very strong. In 1887, at age 17, he became head boy and then proceeded on to the University of Toronto to study languages and literature. Despite completing two years of study in only one, he was obliged to leave the university because his father, an alcoholic, had abandoned the family and finances could not be stretched to continue his attendance. Leacock now enrolled in a three-month course at Strathroy Collegiate Institute to become a qualified high school teacher with a regular income.

He worked at Upper Canada College from 1889 through 1899 and later resumed his studies part-time at the University of Toronto, graduating with a B A in 1891. It was during this period that he was first published in The Varsity, a campus newspaper. But his passion was now economics and political theory. In 1899 he enrolled for postgraduate studies at the University of Chicago and earned his PhD in 1903.

Leacock had married Beatrix Hamilton in 1900 and 15 years later the couple had their only child, Stephen. In time father and son developed a love-hate relationship, partially caused by his son’s diminutive stature of only four feet.

Accepting a post at McGill University Leacock would remain there until he retired in 1936. In 1906, he wrote ‘Elements of Political Science’, quickly adopted as a standard textbook for the next two decades and his most profitable book. He also began public speaking and lecturing, and took a year's leave of absence in 1907 to speak throughout Canada on the subject of national unity.

Leacock had submitted humourous articles to the Toronto magazine Grip in 1894, and was soon published in other Canadian and US magazines. In 1910, he printed privately a collection of these as ‘Literary Lapses’. Acquired by the British publisher, John Lane, it was released in London and New York. He was now a commercially successful writer. There soon followed ‘Nonsense Novels’ (1911) and the sentimental favourite, ‘Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town’ (1912). His ‘Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich’ (1914) is a darker collection that satirizes city life. Collections of sketches continued to be published almost annually, filled with a mixture of light-hearted whimsy, parody, nonsense, and satire.

In later life, he wrote on the art of humour writing and published biographies on Twain and Dickens. Together with continued speaking tours he also added to his non-fiction with many well-regarded and award-winning volumes on Canada.

Politically Leacock was a social conservative and a partisan Conservative. He opposed women’s right to vote and had a varied record on non-English immigration. He was a champion of Empire but an advocate of social welfare legislation and wealth redistribution, but he often caused friction with his racist views towards blacks and Indigenous peoples.

Leacock has for some time been forgotten as an economist, but it’s often quoted that in 1911 more people had heard of him than had heard of Canada. For the decade after 1915 Leacock was the most popular humorist in the English-speaking world.

Stephen Leacock died on 28th March 1944 of throat cancer in Toronto, Canada. He was 74. He was buried in the St George the Martyr Churchyard, Sutton, Ontario.

Journey to the moon on the Apollo 12 mission with Alan Bean, the fourth astronaut to walk on the lunar surface and the only artist to paint its beauty firsthand!

As a boy, Alan wanted to fly planes. As a young navy pilot, Alan wished he could paint the view from the cockpit. So he took an art class to learn patterns and forms. But no class could prepare him for the beauty of the lunar surface some 240,000 miles from Earth. In 1969, Alan became the fourth man and first artist on the moon. He took dozens of pictures, but none compared to what he saw through his artistic eyes. When he returned to Earth, he began to paint what he saw. Alan's paintings allowed humanity to experience what it truly felt like to walk on the moon. Journalist and storyteller Dean Robbins's tale of this extraordinary astronaut is masterful, and artist Sean Rubin's illustrations are whimsical and unexpected. With back matter that includes photos of the NASA mission, images of Alan's paintings, and a timeline of lunar space travel, this is one adventure readers won't want to miss!

It seemed so logical at first. Fourteen-year-old Lenny Cyrus had loved Zooey Andrews since third grade. All the boy genius needed to do to win her heart, surely, was shrink down to the size of an amoeba, ooze into a gelatin capsule, and have his friend Harlan slip it (him!) into Zooey’s Diet Coke. Told in three voices, this fantastical middle grade novel takes Lenny deep into Zooey’s loud, splashing innards, where a talking astrovirus named Astro has a bad attitude about white blood cells (“self-righteous pus-bags”) and aromatic hormones disco dance. The question is, will Lenny and Zooey survive his crazy experiment in nanotechnology?

William Herschel was descended from one of three brothers, whose Lutheran opinions made it expedient for them to quit Moravia early in the seventeenth century. Hans Herschel thereupon settled as a brewer at Pirna, in Saxony; his son Abraham rose to some repute as a landscape-gardener in the royal service at Dresden; and Abraham’s youngest son, Isaac, brought into the world with him, in 1707, an irresistible instinct and aptitude for music. Having studied at Berlin, he made his way in 1731 to Hanover, where he was immediately appointed oboist in the band of the Hanoverian Guard. A year later he married Anna Ilse Moritzen, by whom he had ten children. The fourth of these, Frederick William, known to fame as William Herschel, was born November 15th, 1738. His brilliant faculties quickly displayed themselves. At the garrison-school he easily distanced his brother Jacob, his senior by four years, and learned besides, privately, whatever French and mathematics the master could teach him. He showed also a pronounced talent for music, and was already, at fourteen, a proficient on the hautboy and violin. In this direction lay his manifest destiny. His father was now bandmaster of the Guard; he was poor, and had no other provision to give his sons than to train them in his own art; and thus William, driven by necessity to become self-supporting while still a boy, entered the band as oboist in 1753. They were a family of musicians. Of the six who reached maturity, only Mrs. Griesbach, the elder daughter, gave no sign of personally owning a share in the common gift, which descended, nevertheless, to her five sons, all noted performers on sundry instruments. William Herschel accompanied his regiment to England in 1755, with his father and elder brother. He returned a year later, bringing with him a copy of Locke “On the Human Understanding,” upon which he had spent the whole of his small savings. Two of the three volumes thus acquired were recovered by his sister after seventy years, and transmitted to his son. The breaking-out of the Seven Years’ War proved decisive as to his future life. Campaigning hardships visibly told upon his health; his parents resolved, at all hazards, to rescue him from them; and accordingly, after the disaster at Hastenbeck, July 26th, 1757, they surreptitiously shipped him off to England. By this adventure, since he was in the military service of the Elector of Hanover, George III. of England, he incurred the penalties of desertion; but they were never exacted, and were remitted by the King himself in 1782. William Herschel was in his nineteenth year when he landed at Dover with a French crown-piecein his pocket. Necessity or prudence kept him for some time obscure; and we next hear of him as having played a solo on the violin at one of Barbandt’s concerts in London, February 15th, 1760. In the same year he was engaged by the Earl of Darlington to train the band of the Durham Militia, when his shining qualities brought him to the front. The officers of the regiment looked with astonishment on the phenomenal young German who had dropped among them from some cloudy region; who spoke English perfectly, played like a virtuoso, and possessed a curious stock of varied knowledge. Their account of him at a mess-dinner excited the curiosity of Dr. Miller, organist and historian of Doncaster, who, having heard him perform a violin solo by Giardini, fell into a rapture, and invited him on the spot to live with him.

What if Osamu Tezuka’s beloved hero Astro Boy were a young robot with endless enthusiasm who lived with a bumbling sad sack robot friend, a self-centered wise-cracking cat, and a well-meaning but forgetful inventor? Why, then he’d be Reggie-12! Reggie-12 is classic Japanese adventure manga cartooning reworked in Brian Ralph’s trademark style and told with the episodic wit and structure of the contemporary American sitcom. Laughs explode from the page (and the reader’s belly) as mishap follows caper follows disaster. Brian Ralph (Daybreak, Cave~In) first presented this hilarious pop culture send-up of the infallible boy hero in the back pages of seminal Asian culture magazine Giant Robot, and it instantly become one of the magazine's most popular and enduring features.
On one hot afternoon in July of 1982, Krista Harrison was picking up aluminum cans with one of her friends in Marshallville park. Marshallville park was about one hundred yards from Krista's childhood home. During this time the young boy that was with Krista saw her abduction. The boy ran to Krista's home in a panic, with tears running down his face as he tried to explain what he had just witnessed. When her friend was able to calm down enough he told her parents that a man with shoulder length hair, between the ages of 25 and 35 pulled up next to them at the park and had pulled Krista into his van. He forced Krista into his vehicle and drove away from the park immediately after the abduction. The child with Krista described the man's van as being brown or a dark red color, it had round windows on each side and near the rear of the vehicle. The child gave the police enough information to allow the police to get a sketch of the man that abducted Krista. As the news of the abduction spread, Harrison's community came together to form search parties. Hundreds of volunteers searched far and wide throughout the village of Marshalville, they initially believed that she would be found alive, in an unknown place.

When he is in search of refuge, Guy Mannering, a colonel of an Indian army, decides to spend the night at the home of Godfrey Bertram, the Laird of Ellangowan. Despite being a generous and friendly host, the Laird’s attention is focused on his wife instead of his guest, as his first child is soon to be born. As Lady Betram goes into labor giving birth to a healthy boy named Harry, a psychic arrives to form a prophecy, though the woman is undermined by another guest. During his visit, Mannering meets a socially inept tutor, Dominie Sampson, who insists on predicting the child’s future based on a reading of the stars, in addition to the psychic’s prediction. However, when Sampson discovers that his prediction is quite alarming, he seals it an envelope for Godfrey and Lady Betram to read when the child turns five. But when tragedy strikes right before Harry’s fifth birthday it is apparent that the prophecy should have been heeded much earlier. While in the care of a customs officer, Harry is the accidental witness of a murder, leading to his abduction, and the dawn of the prophecy’s unfolding. First published anonymously in 1815, Sir Walter Scott began writing this exhilarating novel immediately after the completion of his previous success, Waverly. With elements of romance, murder, mystery, and Scott’s classic humor, Guy Mannering: or, The Astrologer earned quick commercial success, beloved for its captivating narrative. Featuring vivid settings and well-portrayed characters, Guy Mannering: Or The Astrologer remains to be just as exciting for modern audiences as it was for its original readers. Written with masterful prose and wonderful dialogue, this novel is perfectly detailed and provides invaluable insight on the culture and landscape of 18th century Scotland. This edition of Guy Mannering: Or, The Astrologer by Sir Walter Scott now features a stunning new cover design and is printed in a font that is both modern and readable. With these accommodations, this edition of Guy Mannering: Or, The Astrologer crafts an accessible and pleasant reading experience for modern audiences while restoring the original mastery of Sir Walter Scott’s literature.

Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission.
