Two Series of Murders Seem Mysteriously Connected
Step into True Colors -- a series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime

Three years before Jack the Ripper began his murderous spree on the streets of London, women were dying in their beds as The Midnight Assassin terrorized the citizens of Austin, Texas. Now, with suspicion falling on Her Majesty’s family and Scotland Yard at a loss as to who the Ripper might be, Queen Victoria summons her great-granddaughter, Alice Anne von Wettin, a former Pinkerton agent who worked the unsolved Austin case, and orders her to discreetly form a team to look into the London matter.

The prospect of a second chance to work with Annie just might entice Isaiah Joplin out of his comfortable life as an Austin lawyer. If his theories are right, they’ll find the The Midnight Assassin and, by default, the Ripper. If they’re wrong, he and Annie are in a bigger mess than the one the feisty female left behind when she departed Austin under cover of darkness three years ago.

Can the unlikely pair find the truth of who is behind the murders before they are drawn into the killer’s deadly game? From Texas to London, the story navigates the fine line between truth and fiction as Annie and Isaiah ultimately find the hunters have become the hunted.

The literary evolution of the female vampire begins with the legendary LILITH...but is she a cursed monster, or a symbol of the rebellious, independent woman? While the male vampire has gone from monster to anti-hero to dream boyfriend, the path of his sister in blood has been more complex and mysterious. James Grant Goldin presents a curated anthology of the original texts, some freshly translated, that trace the evolution of the vampire lady through the end of the 19th century. In this anthology, there are, to be sure, monsters--VESPERTILIA of "A Mystery of the Campagna," ONEIZA of "Thalaba the Destroyer" and BRUNHILDE of "Wake Not The Dead"--but there are also vampire women in love, like CLARIMONDE, the airborne ALICE of Turgenev's "Phantoms," or the lesbian CARMILLA. There are vampires seeking justice or vengeance, like THE LADY BRIGHT. And there are characters like CLARA CROFTON or ALINSKA, who are both predators and victims. VAMPIRES: FIRST BLOOD VOLUME II - THE VAMPIRE LADIES collects the original adventures of the daughters of darkness who returned from the dead to pit their supernatural powers against the entrenched forces of patriarchy. This anthology comes complete with introductory notes and detailed glossaries to make these surprisingly contemporary stories come alive for a new generation

Lilith, from "The Alphabet of Ben Sira"

The Bride of Corinth, by Goethe

Oneiza, from Southey's "Thalaba the Destroyer"

Brunhilda, from Raupach's "Wake Not the Dead"

Alinska, from Lamothe-Langon's "The Vampire, or the Virgin of Hungary"

The Vampire Bride, by Liddell

Clarimonde, from Gautier's "The Dead in Love"

The Lady Bright, from Maxwell's "The Vampire"

Clara Crofton, from Rymer's "Varney the Vampyre"

Alice, from Turgenev's "Phantoms"

Vespertilia, from Crawford's "A Mystery of the Campagna" and Watson's "Vespertilia"

The Woman Who Did Not Care, from Kipling's "A Fool There Was"

Countess Dolingen, from Stoker's "Dracula's Guest"

After her father dies in a riding accident, Gina Borne’s mother loses the will to live and soon follows her husband to the grave. Not only is Gina grief-stricken ? aged just 18, she faces a miserable, lonely life in the gloomy shadow of her pious uncle, who’s known as “The Preaching Peer”. Seeking escape, she successfully applies for a job as “companion” to the Earl of Ingleton’s sickly seventeen-year-old ward, Lady Alice Hanbury.

It seems as though the spectre of Death is still stalking her when she finds herself at the ancient Ingle Priory, haunted by the spirits of a white lady, tortured prisoners and a crying child. Even her new charge, Lady Alice, seems to be at death’s door ? and Gina realises that an evil housekeeper is slowly draining Alice of life with daily doses of poison. It seems too far-fetched to be true ? surely the Earl, kindly as he is, will never believe her… Plagued by ghosts in the night, Gina strives to save her new friend from this slow, cold death as she clings to the hope that blossoming friendship and the light of love will chase all this darkness away.

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.”

The Metamorphosis - the masterpiece of Franz Kafka - was first published in 1915 and is one of the seminal works of fiction of the twentieth century. The novel is cited as a key influence for many of today’s leading authors; as Auden wrote: "Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man".

Traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, wakes to find himself transformed into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Gregor's transformation is never revealed, and as he attempts to adjust to his new condition he becomes a burden to his parents and sister, who are repelled by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.

A harrowing, yet strangely comic, meditation on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation, The Metamorphosishas taken its place as one of the most widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction.

The Legend Classics series:
Around the World in Eighty Days
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Importance of Being Earnest
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Metamorphosis
The Railway Children
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Frankenstein
Wuthering Heights
Three Men in a Boat
The Time Machine
Little Women
Anne of Green Gables
The Jungle Book
The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories
Dracula
A Study in Scarlet
Leaves of Grass
The Secret Garden
The War of the Worlds
A Christmas Carol
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Heart of Darkness
The Scarlet Letter
This Side of Paradise
Oliver Twist
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Treasure Island
The Turn of the Screw
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Emma
The Trial
A Selection of Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe
Grimm Fairy Tales
The Awakening
Mrs Dalloway
Gulliver’s Travels
The Castle of Otranto
Silas Marner
Hard Times

The tide has turned against the royals...

Princess Dawn, along with her cousins Evan and Ian, as well as her friends Mizu and Alan, experienced a narrow victory over Magica this past summer. And though it is now early autumn, the battle is heating up.

The shattered body of demon, Ralston Radburn, is causing chaos all over Fadreama. These little fragments of evil latch onto the darkness in the hearts of both humans and demons, giving them the power to live out their most evil desires. Dawn and her friends begin the immense task of seeking out these fragments and purifying them, but find more than a few obstacles in their way.

Not only is Dawn looking for fragments, but so is the dark Goddess of Hate sorceress, Magica. She has dispatched her Shadow Senshi to gather Fragments of Cardew, so that she may use them to create the ultimate warrior. Of course there is Ralston Radburn himself, skulking about in the body of Alice's cousin, Lance. The foul scheme he is concocting may be enough to outweigh all of Magica's ambitions.

The battle over fragments suddenly takes on a new dimension, when the most unexpected thing happens; the fragments develop their own consciousness! Words are whispered on the wind, when a dark cloud hovers over Devona. The words say, 'revolution.' Events have been set into motion that cannot be halted. Fadreama sits on the eve of change. At such a precarious time, there is only one thing left to do; try.

Annie Sullivan, an inexperienced 20-year-old teacher, is invited to aid a sickly deaf-blind girl who is considered dumb, and whose parents contemplate sending to an insane asylum.

When the young teacher agrees to treat the child with her experimental "manual alphabet," she never expects that she will find solace in the friendship with the little girl. Only through facing her own inner demons can the gifted teacher begin to help her pupil.

In The Friendship, Caroline Dubois blends fact and fiction, atmosphere and suspense, to uncover the 50 years of tumultuous relationship between the most famous student-teacher pair who ever lived. This is an unforgettable story about the redemptive power of true friendship.

“Breathlessly exciting and heartbreaking by turnsーan emotional and historical page-turner."ーHuffington Post

"A compelling, page-turning narrative . . . Re-examines the life of history's greatest teacher from a fresh, psychological point of view.“ ーKirkus Reviews

“Painstakingly researched, beautifully hewn, compulsively readable . . . Not to be missed.“ーLibrary Journal

* * * *

BOOK EXCERPT ? All rights reserved. Reprinted by permission:

CHAPTER ONE

Agawam, Massachusetts, 1874

“Annie! Annie!”

Annie could hear her mother calling after her. But she did not care. Those lights from the school, across the field, enchanted her. She had visited the school before, but never had she seen it all lit up during the evening.

Annie’s mother, Alice, looked through the porch at her eight-year-old daughter running through the field. She sighed. She shouted, exclaiming to her husband Thomas who was sitting inside, “What will become of her?”

Thomas shrugged his shoulders and took another sip from the cheap wine bottle, “Oh, I’ll teach her a lesson when she returns.”

Four-year-old Jimmie made his way into the porch, limping due to his bad hip, “Mama, I want to go with Annie!”

Alice glared at him and he hurried to return into the cabin. Alice could hear baby Mary crying inside.

Thomas yelled, “Alice, are you coming? When is dinner ready? I’m starving!”

Alice looked at the field, at her daughter making her way in the distance toward the school. She was worried about her. With her bad eyes, it could be difficult for her to find her way back in the darkness. “Annie!” she screamed again, despite knowing Annie could no longer hear her, “Annie!”

Annie made her way through the wheat field. The blurry lights of the school guided her through the darkness. The wheat brushed her arms on both sides as she ran through the narrow path.

*** * * *

END OF EXCERPT** (To read further click on the book cover, where you can read more using the Look Inside Feature!)

Set in Hobart in the mid 1870s 21 year old Meg Hamilton arrives from England to discover why she has not heard from her grandmother for two years.
After learning from cousins, Rissa and Angus MacGregor that her beloved Grandma Kate is serving a prison sentence for a murder committed twenty-eight years ago, Meg sets out to prove her innocent, and her quest leads her to her grandmother’s old servant, Alice.
From here on this is in a sense a story told within a story in flashbacks as Alice finally reveals to Meg the truth about the night of the murder, and how Kate Cameron, a woman before her time, had become involved in the political struggle to improve conditions for women convicts.
There are still many unanswered questions however, and as Meg puts together the shocking pieces of the puzzle she becomes more vulnerable to evil forces that prevail.
Threaded throughout the narrative is the infatuation of Rissa for a tall dark stranger, the faithfulness of Jeremy a young Scot who falls in love with Meg, and Aunt Katio who remains something of an enigma from start to finish, but around who much of the story hangs.
Finally this story could be summed up as a conflict between the forces of light and darkness, played out in the lives of two young women of the Victorian era, one with a heart for truth and justice and the other with a destructive passion for prestige, property and position.

All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It's the best book we've had. - Ernest Hemingway**

A nineteenth-century boy from a Mississippi River town recounts his adventures as he travels down the river with a runaway slave, encountering a family involved in a feud, two scoundrels pretending to be royalty, and Tom Sawyer's aunt who mistakes him for Tom.

In this unforgettable adventure for all ages, Twain delves into issues such as racism, friendship, war, religion, and freedom with an uncanny combination of lightheartedness and gravitas.

This was the first major American novel to be written in the vernacular, a dark and funny satire that exposes the bigotry and hypocrisy of provincial America during Mark Twain's lifetime.

Hello there,

whoever you are,

wherever you are,

Let me tell you of The Phantom Lake and Death's Train, a children's dark fantasy book based on two things, my attachment to children's fantasy, having grown up with it, and my experiences with grief, having suffered a series of losses in a short span of time back in the late 2000s when I was a teenager.

It tells the story of a boy who suffers a great loss and who then ends up in the afterlife while still living. With sword and shield at hand, there he embarks on a journey, meeting peculiar characters along the way. Through those interactions, he comes to the realization he must overcome his loss if he is to save himself, easier said than done when the hands of darkness reaches for a heart torn between hope and despair.

"Alice Adventure's in Wonderland", "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane," "A Monster Calls," these are but a few of the works that served as the inspiration of my own, yet I don't dare say it stands among them.

It's sort of autobiographical in some ways, and what I mean by that is I took personal experiences and turned them into fiction. An example of it is a chapter based on a summer of the early 2010s, where I spent it wandering my hometown by myself from night to dawn, just walking while listening to music, contemplating everything, how things had gone so wrong, and where on the last night, I slept on top of the grave of a soul most dear to me of whom death triggered the series of events that brought me there years after.

I've been working on and off on it since 2016, and I've poured every ounce of my heart, or what was left, into it. It comes from a place of knowing. There's nothing discussed in it I didn't experience firsthand. Writing it has helped me deal with every loss I still mourn to this very day I'm typing this. It even helped me understand something that ended up becoming the main message I'm now trying to share through it, one I hope resonates with someone somewhere.

P.S. My book is a one person's work, no editor, cover designer, beta reader, or ai use, but despite its flaws, I believe in what I have.

If you're still here,

thank you for reading,

With much appreciation,

Caleb

A graveyard, fresh dirt, bleak skies--these are the things that Alice is left to fill the void of the passing of her husband, John. Her memories alone of their love that started in a small village in Kerala, India, is not enough to comfort her in the darkness of a cemetery in the United States, so far away from home. Brought overseas by the nursing gap in the 1970s that so desperately left the United States in a health-care crisis, Alice is a displaced nurse who brought her family, including her brother, Jose, with her on this arduous journey. Although Alice's profession is essential to building the economy, she is not met with a welcome committee or happiness on arrival. She suffers through rejection, discrimination, and prejudice at the hands of the men and women who begged for her and others like her to be here.

The passion of her brother, Jose, was for writing, and he yearned to go back to his home country with the money needed to kick-start his career. He soon discovers that the American dream is nothing but a mirage--he realizes that the invitation to this monumental country does not come with instructions on how to survive it. As America becomes more polarized, they are forced to lose their dignity, self-worth, culture, and honor to make it day by day in a country whose people see them as a threat. Through the struggle, Jose intensely questions humanity. Will he, his friends, and sister, Alice, succumb to the unintended role they play as Atlas in carrying the burdens of the exotics that are now trapped here?

Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major theme is the triviality with which it treats institutions.

Wilde's notoriety caused the play, despite its early success, to be closed after 86 performances. This latest edition allows you to discover or enjoy once again the writing of one of history's great comedy and drama writers.

The Legend Classics series:
Around the World in Eighty Days
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Importance of Being Earnest
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Metamorphosis
The Railway Children
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Frankenstein
Wuthering Heights
Three Men in a Boat
The Time Machine
Little Women
Anne of Green Gables
The Jungle Book
The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories
Dracula
A Study in Scarlet
Leaves of Grass
The Secret Garden
The War of the Worlds
A Christmas Carol
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Heart of Darkness
The Scarlet Letter
This Side of Paradise
Oliver Twist
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Treasure Island
The Turn of the Screw
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Emma
The Trial
A Selection of Short Stories by Edgar Allan Poe
Grimm Fairy Tales
The Awakening
Mrs Dalloway
Gulliver’s Travels
The Castle of Otranto
Silas Marner
Hard Times
